Completing an award is a significant academic achievement and is rightly celebrated at the University’s prestigious Conferring of Awards ceremonies. Conferring of Awards ceremonies are inspiring events that have both formal and symbolic significance.

Graduation at the college and university level occurs when the presiding officer confers degrees upon candidates, either individually or en masse, even if graduates physically receive their diploma later at a smaller college or departmental ceremony. Not only will the faculty usually wear academic dress at the formal ceremonies, but also the trustees and degree candidates.

Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the twelfth century. At that time Latin was the language of scholarship. A “Universitas” was a guild of masters (MAs) with a licence to teach. “Degree” and “graduate” come from gradus , meaning “step”. The first step was admission to a bachelor’s degree. The second step was the masters step, giving the graduate admission to the universitas and license to teach. Typical dress for graduation is not only gown and hood, but also hats adapted from the daily dress of university staff in the Middle Ages, which was in turn based on the attire worn by medieval clergy.

Below you can find examples of academic dress for each faculty at UTS.

For all coursework and Masters by Research graduates, academic dress is comprised of a black gown, a hood in the colour of the faculty at the level of the award, and a trencher (cap). Graduation ceremonies are formal occasions so it’s important to wear appropriate clothing. When choosing what to wear it might be helpful to consider that academic gowns are quite heavy and can be very warm. When wearing academic dress, the hood should hang evenly from the shoulders. The trencher is worn straight on the head with the tassel hanging over the right side. The trencher is worn throughout the ceremony except during the national anthem.

PhD graduates wear a red gown with white satin facing and a black velvet soft bonnet with gold cord and tassel. The bonnet (cap) is worn straight on the head with the tassel hanging over the right side.

Arts and Social Sciences

In Europe, education was the preserve of the monasteries until the twelfth century; academic gowns have their origins in the lay costumes of that time. Festal gowns worn by the Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor, Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellor are based on the traditional British gowns from these offices, but contain Australian features such as the embroidery depicting Sydney wattle. The trencher grew out of the pileus or hat worn at Oxford and Cambridge universities around the seventeenth century. The design of the academic dress worn by UTS graduates is unique to the University, with the lining of the hoods featuring different colours for each faculty. The number and colour of the bands on the edge of the lining designate the level of the award. Recipients of some undergraduate and associate diplomas may also wear a sash.

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidiagal people and the Gamaygal people, upon whose ancestral lands our university stands. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.

Fabric Types

Our most popular and affordable gown fabric. Lightweight, easily worn over clothing, comfortable in both humid and cool climates. Matt-finish for a smart, dignified look. 170gsm, selected by us for the perfect weight and drape of academic dress.

Wool/Poly Blend

Generally 70% wool and 30% polyester blend. Matt-finish for a smart, dignified look. Selected by us for the perfect weight and drape of academic dress. Blends can be heavier than our polyester or superfine wool depending on availability. Just ask us for assistance regarding wool/poly blend when placing your order.

Superfine Wool

A favorite for academics and professionals. A superior choice of fabric. Select 100% superfine 'cool' wool. Excellent breatheability and lightweight. Comfortable in all conditions. Feels wonderfully smooth and soft to the touch, drapes perfectly. Matt-finish for a smart, dignified look.

Gown sizing is determined by your height (floor to top of head). If you are in-between sizes, we recommend the larger size. Gowns are worn open at the front and are very loose-fitting, so don't worry about the waistline - just go by your height!

Head size is head circumference taken above the eyebrows and ears. Use a tape measure.

*Soft cap mortar boards are slightly elasticised with a little room between sizes. If you are in-between sizes, we recommend the larger size. ie: if you measure 57.5cms, choose a size large.  Head sizing can be tricky. You are welcome to exchange size within 7 days of receiving. 

We use Australia Post for domestic orders and DHL express for international orders. The charges below include shipping and handling $AUD.

Domestic shipping: refer to Australia post for delivery time estimates. Australia post no longer guarantee delivery time frames. Use the tracking number provided to track your parcel on the Australia post website. If there is reason to believe your parcel has gone missing, contact us for assistance. Do not assume that selecting express post means your order will be dispatched within a few days. A lot of our regalia is made to order. Refer lead time tab.

International shipping: international freight is expensive however we only use DHL express for reliability, speed and security. Additional freight charges may apply if your order is unusually large. We will contact you if additional freight charges may apply. Our international freight charges do not include any duties or taxes at your end.

If you would like your regalia for a particular ceremony date, contact us to ask about availability.

Please be aware that most regalia is bespoke and tailor made. We have a made-to-order, small-batch production cycle.

We aim to fulfil all orders within a reasonable time frame, however lead times can be situational, seasonal and will vary depending on our production schedule. 

Please do not assume that by selecting express post that your order will be dispatched within a few days. We are not a pick-and-pack warehouse. 

Please do not assume that we know you want your regalia in time for a ceremony, that we know the date of your ceremony, or that you will receive your regalia in time for your ceremony (refer points below). We recommend having a contingency plan; hire or borrow regalia from a friend, a colleague or your institution.

We cannot control shipping time once a parcel leaves our premises (see shipping tab). 

Some things that are out of our control may delay production. We take all steps necessary to avoid delays but materials and deliveries delay, staff shortages, machine malfunctions, and natural disasters are out of our control. 

Putting pressure on our staff will not make your order be processed more quickly. We do not tolerate unreasonable, impatient or aggressive behaviour.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as our production team work hard to try to meet everyone's requirements. 

Be sure to follow the laundering instructions on the care label of your garment. 

Our garments come to you pressed and ready-to-wear with minimal creasing from freight. However, we do recommend hanging your garment when not in use and if required, gently iron or steam your robe. (Do not put an iron directly onto any satin lining or facing!)

Every George H Lilley Regalia gown comes with a complimentry robe bag. We recommend using this bag for storeage and travel. Allowing your garment to air regularly will assist to keep your gown in best condition.

Particular care is required if your garment has satin linings or facings. In this case, we recommend that your academic regalia is worn in ceremonies only. Avoid eating or drinking while wearing your regalia as the satin may stain. Take care when handling as pinning or your fingernails could damage the fabric.

Two funded opportunities under Sydney-Glasgow Joint PhD program

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences have unveiled two new joint PhD projects, providing opportunities for aspiring PhD candidates from across the world to work alongside leading research supervisors. The successful candidates will be jointly enrolled at both institutions, with Glasgow as the home institution and the University of Sydney as the host institution.

The funded Joint PhD opportunities

The health and wellbeing impacts of the energy transition for low-income renters: a comparative uk-australia study .

This project will advance understanding of the health and well-being impacts for low-income renter households of energy transition measures proposed by governments, and design solutions to redress identified adverse impacts as integral to these proposed measures while also generating co-benefits more broadly for society. It will conduct a comparative study between two locations which are increasingly experiencing extreme weather events with significant adverse population impacts and have high concentrations of low- income renter households – Glasgow, Scotland and Sydney, Australia.

The Socio-Economic Impacts of Colonialisation in Australia

Since the early European settlements in the late 18th century, the economic history of Australia is very deeply linked to its colonisation. This project will create a rich dataset to measure the impact that British colonialisation had on its Australian colonies on a range of economic outcomes in the short and long run. Using British and Irish records of settlers, Australian arrival records and subsequent censuses, together with current and recent rich administrative health records and surveys, the project will:

measure the mortality, morbidity, and characteristics of settlers travelling to Australia in the short run and understand how the selection of surviving settlers still impacts the health of current Australians. 

 analyse the impact of the relative arrival of free versus convict settlers across different areas in Australian on the severity and incidence of indigenous massacres and current political views.

Award Details

The program will commence in October 2024. The funding is provided by the University of Glasgow and is available as a scholarship for the maximum of 3.25 years. The full funding package includes:

• An annual maintenance grant (stipend) at the UK Research and Innovation rate (UKRI).
• Tuition fees at the University of Glasgow (including fee-waiver at the University of Sydney).
• Successful candidates can also draw on a Research Training Support Grant, up to a maximum of approximately £940 per year.
• A one-off travel grant of up to £3,000 to facilitate the required travel between Glasgow and Sydney.
