What's the best university in the world? What's the best Australian uni? Here's what the World University Rankings list says

A silhouette shows graduate students wearing gowns and hats.

The best universities in the world have been ranked, with Australia's highest-ranking institution, The University of Melbourne, coming in at number 34.

Each year, The Times Higher Education World University Rankings list is released.

This year, it tracked 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions.

What are the top-ranking universities in the world?

  • First: University of Oxford,  UK
  • Second:  Harvard University, US
  • Third: (jointly)   University of Cambridge, UK AND Stanford University, US
  • Fifth: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US

You can see the full list on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings website.

How did Australian universities go?

Australia has 10 universities in the top 200.

After the University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Queensland, University of Sydney and Australian National University were top of the list for Australian institutions.

Those same universities were also the top five among Australian institutions in last year's list, but Monash University went up a ranking, while the Australian National University went down.

While some institutions went up by one or two rankings since last year, the University of Adelaide rose 23 places, the University of Technology Sydney went from 143 up to 133 and Macquarie University jumped from 192 to 172.

The Group of Eight Universities — a bloc of some of Australia oldest and largest universities — pointed out that seven of its eight members made it into the top 100 of the list.

That group's chief executive, Vicki Thomson, said all Australian universities that had increased their rankings deserved recognition and congratulations.

"More Australian universities have gained ground rather than dropped in the rankings, which is testament to the overall quality of our higher education sector," she said.

How do they work out the rankings?

There's five categories that go into scoring each university, being:

  • International outlook
  • Industry income

A significant portion of the scoring comes from an annual reputation survey, which this year had more than 40,000 responses, but it also takes into account a university's:

  • Staff-to-student ratio
  • Doctorate-to-bachelors ratio
  • Doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio
  • Institutional income
  • Research income
  • Research productivity
  • Proportion of international students
  • Proportion of international staff
  • International collaboration

How did Australian universities fare?

share image

It’s that time of year again for the top universities to vie for a coveted position on the  Times Higher Education World University Rankings , also known as THE Rankings . The 2022 rankings mark an even more extensive evaluation of higher education institutions than 2021, with 1,600 universities from 99 countries included. This year’s rankings have also considered the influence of Covid-19 in the performance and trends within higher education. Let's jump right in and analyse the results.

Which universities made the top 10?

The top ten places were dominated by some of the most well-renowned and famous institutions in the world. The number one spot was a race for the line between the University of Oxford and the California Institute of Technology. In the end, the University of Oxford emerged victorious for the sixth year in a row, while the California Institute of Technology jumped two places from 2021.

The top 10 universities were dominated by institutions from the USA, with eight spots occupied by American universities, many of which are  Ivy League members. This reflects the same trend as 2021, which also saw two UK universities make the top 10, both members of the Russell Group . The 2022 rankings top 10 did not feature any new entrants and features the same universities as in 2021.

However, there was a rise of two spots for Princeton University to 7th and a drop of one spot for the University of California Berkeley. 2022 also sees the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology share 5th place. Harvard University enjoyed its highest placing on the rankings since 2016.

The top 10 universities in the world on the  Times Higher Education World University Rankings  2022 are:

  • University of Oxford
  • California Institute of Technology (=2)
  • Harvard University (=2)
  • Stanford University
  • University of Cambridge (=5)
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (=5)
  • Princeton University
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • Yale University
  • University of Chicago

Which universities ranked in the top 30?

There are some interesting trends in the rankings for 2022. This is the first year that two universities from China have made the top 20, namely Tsinghua University and Peking University. The six institutions from the country in the top 100, and 10 in the top 200, underscores the growth and strength of Chinese universities. There was also a strong showing from universities in Hong Kong, with four institutions in the top 100.

The USA accounted for the greatest number of universities in the top 200, with 57. The UK comes in second with 28 representatives, followed by Germany with 22 institutions.  Australia and China are also well established in the top 200 with 12 and 10 universities respectively.

Interestingly  Canada  saw a slight dip with only seven universities in the top 200, putting the country on par with Switzerland. There was another new entrant into the top 200 with the first Saudi Arabian university, King Abdulaziz University, ranked 190th. Let’s turn our attention to the universities in positions 11 to 30:

11. Columbia University - USA

12. Imperial College London - UK

13. Johns Hopkins University (=13) - USA

14. University of Pennsylvania (=13) - USA

15. ETH Zurich – Switzerland

16. Peking University (=16) – China

The 13 performance indicators used are:

  • Reputation survey (15 per cent)
  • Student to staff ratio (4.5 per cent)
  • Doctorate to bachelor’s student ratio (2.25 per cent)
  • Doctorates awarded to academic staff (6 per cent)

  • The proportion of international students (2.5 per cent)
  • The proportion of international staff (2.5 per cent)
  • International collaboration (2.5 per cent)

2022 did see the impact of research into  Covid-19 influencing the rankings . This primarily relates to a steep rise in citation scores for universities producing medical papers related to the virus.

  • The US share of the 100 best universities in the world is declining, while that of East Asian nations and universities in the Middle East is on the up.
  • Saudi Arabia and UAE are leading what some call a new renaissance driven by innovation and knowledge creation, backed by investment.
  • Fears remain that rising geopolitical tensions and mistrust hamper global research excellence.

The geopolitics of knowledge is shifting. The 19th annual edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings , published on 12 October, demonstrates an accelerating trend: the US’s share of the world’s top 100 universities is declining, while that of East Asian nations, led by China, and universities in the Middle East is on the rise.

Have you read?

4 trends that will shape the future of higher education, these 12 innovators are transforming the future of education, a view from china on the future of innovation and education.

In 2018, the US boasted close to half of the world’s top 100 positions in the world rankings, with 43 universities. In today’s edition, the US has just 34, as household names like Dartmouth College, and great regional powerhouse universities including Ohio State and Michigan State lose their top 100 status.

Meanwhile, mainland China’s share of the world top 100 positions has risen from just two in 2018, to an impressive seven today. Hong Kong has a further five top 100 institutions, up from just three in 2018.

South Korea has three top 100 places, up from two in 2018. Singapore and Japan both takes two top 100 places each.

best universities in the world Times Higher Education World University Rankings

In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are leading what some are calling a new renaissance driven by innovation and knowledge creation, backed by heavy investment. Saudi’s King Abdulaziz University is one of the fastest-rising universities in the world, rocketing to 101st position this year from 190th last year, and the Kingdom is the most improved nation, by national average score, in the world rankings this year. In the UAE, of the six UAE universities included in the overall world rankings for 2023, five are on the rise – led by the United Arab Emirates University and the University of Sharjah, which have both surged this year into the world's top 300 list.

Shifts in global innovation and knowledge economy

The Times Higher Education’s (THE) world ranking has become a closely watched barometer of the shifts in the global innovation and knowledge economy, supporting governments policymaking and university leaders’ strategic decisions, as well as supporting millions of internationally-mobile students to decide on who to trust with their education.

The World University Rankings are based on 13 separate performance metrics , covering the full range of internationally-focussed research universities’ core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The 2023 edition is based on an analysis of over 15.5 million research publications – and over 112 million citations to those publications – as well as a survey of more than 40,000 academics worldwide on the international academic reputation of each school, on top of data on institutional income and faculty demographics, including international talent recruitment and research collaboration.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has presented the Middle East and North Africa with unprecedented challenges that need to be solved through community innovation, collaboration and technology.

Together with the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), we have selected the 100 most promising Arab start-ups shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution in 2019.

Entrepreneurs and start-ups are playing a key role in facilitating new ideas, strategies and progress in society – and need to be given a greater platform to meet the region’s most pressing challenges.

Our 2019 selection builds on the success of the 100 Arab start-ups initiative that began in 2017, working to integrate the Arab world's most promising start-up entrepreneurs into a national and regional dialogue on pressing challenges.

You can contribute to improving the Arab region’s future and solving its unprecedented challenges by partnering with us .

So, should the data be a cause for alarm for the US and its Western allies in an increasingly polarised world? No, says Simon Marginson, professor of higher education at the University of Oxford, because there are simply more outstanding universities in the world and a rising tide lifts all boats.

“There’s no evidence that US research is weakening in an absolute sense,” Marginson told Times Higher Education. “This continues to be the most prestigious system in the world.”

But where there is cause for mounting concern is in the fear that increasing geopolitical tensions and mistrust means the world as a whole does not fully benefit from the overall boom in global research excellence, as systems retreat into nationalism and knowledge sharing shrinks back.

For example, while China’s universities excel and rise up the rankings, their scores for international research collaboration and their share of international talent are in decline. “It would be regrettable if the growth of foreigners working in higher education in China has stopped as the engagement is good for everyone,” Marginson told THE. “However, it would be unsurprising, as we are now in a more conflictual era in the geopolitics of higher education.”

Top of the (university) class

Top of the World University Rankings for the seventh consecutive year, is a university renowned for its international knowledge sharing – the UK’s University of Oxford. Oxford is followed by Harvard University in second, while the University of Cambridge (up from 5th) and Stanford University (up from 4th) share third place. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology holds fifth place.

In a further nod to the US decline, the University of Chicago has lost its world top-10 place, falling to 13th, with the UK’s Imperial College London taking its place, moving up from 12th last year, to 10th in 2023.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings best universities in the world

Oxford’s vice chancellor Louise Richardson said in a statement: “My colleagues and I are absolutely delighted that for the seventh consecutive year Oxford has been named the top university in the world. I am very grateful to those who work on compiling these rankings which prove so helpful to universities. Above all, I am indebted to the extraordinary women and men of Oxford whose research and teaching continues to excite our imaginations, broaden our horizons, cure disease and explore deeply difficult problems for the betterment of society. I am so proud to be associated with them.”

Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024

Published annually by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings is globally recognised and one of the go-to ranking providers for quality assessment of institutions all over the world.

Its ranking methodology is based on calibrated performance indicators, categorised within the following key areas: Teaching (the learning environment), Research environment (volume, income and reputation), Research quality (citation impact, research strength), research excellence and research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research) and Industry (income and patents).

Each indicator contributes a percentage towards an institution’s final score.

Teaching (29.5%)

Teaching reputation: 15%

Staff-to-student ratio: 4.5%

Doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio: 2%

Doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio: 5.5%

Institutional income: 2.5%

This performance indicator studies the perceived prestige of institutions in teaching, using data from THE’s Academic Reputation Survey. It also gauges the number of postgraduate research students as an indication of how well an institution is nurturing the next generation of academics, and appealing to graduates with teaching at the highest level. The subject mix of universities and spread of disciplines and countries are also taken into account.

Research environment (29%)

To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released the 2024 rankings for multiple graduate fields.

Depending on the job or field, earning a graduate degree may lead to higher earnings, career advancement and specialized skill development.

But with several types of degrees and hundreds of graduate schools, it can be difficult to narrow down the options. To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released its 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings today. They evaluate business, education, fine arts, health, law, library studies, nursing, public affairs, science, and social sciences and humanities graduate programs. Medical school and engineering rankings are not being released at this time.

A notable methodology change includes a new salary indicator based on profession in the business rankings.

Additionally, for the first time in four years, there are new rankings for a blend of doctoral and master's programs in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, nurse midwifery and speech-language pathology. Graduate programs in nurse anesthesia and social work are also ranked for the first time since 2016 and 2022, respectively. Those and other specialty rankings are based on reputation ratings from scholars at other surveyed schools.

Read each program's specific methodology for the most detailed explanations of all the changes. The rankings are one source of information among many that prospective college students can use to inform their college decision. Below is a summary of the top-ranked schools in four major graduate program areas:

Best Law Schools

Best business schools, best nursing schools, best education schools.

Among the top 10 law schools . Yale Law School in Connecticut and California-based  Stanford Law School shared the top spot again. The  University of Chicago Law School in Illinois maintained its No. 3 rank, followed by a four-way tie at No. 4: Duke University School of Law in North Carolina, Harvard Law School in Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law .

Columbia Law School in New York ranked No. 8 again, while there was a three-way tie for No. 9: New York University School of Law , Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law in Illinois and the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor Law School .

Looking beyond the top 10, multiple law schools moved up in the rankings. William & Mary Law School in Virginia, for instance, jumped nine spots from a tie at No. 45 to a five-way tie at No. 36.

U.S. News also ranked 13 law specialties: business/corporate, clinical training, constitutional, contracts/commercial, criminal, dispute resolution, environmental, health care, intellectual property, international, legal writing, tax and trial advocacy. (You can filter by specialty on the  main ranking page .)

Meanwhile, in the  part-time law school rankings – which consists of law schools with at least 20 part-time students enrolled in fall 2022 and fall 2023 – the top three stayed the same. The  Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., is once again at the top while D.C.-based  George Washington University Law School , now No. 3, switched places with the  Fordham University School of Law in New York City, which claimed second place.

Previously ranked at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business took the top spot in this year's full-time MBA program rankings . Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business moved down from their previous places in the top two to tie at No. 3.

While the top 10 mostly consists of the same schools as last year, both the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business joined those ranks this year. UC Berkeley rose from a three-way tie at No. 11 to a three-way tie at No. 7, while UVA moved up four spots from No. 14 to a tie at No. 10.

Farther down the full-time MBA rankings, there were some big changes. For example, Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business soared 39 spots from a tie at No. 86 to a tie at No. 47.

Meanwhile, the very top of the part-time MBA rankings looks similar to last year, with the same schools in the top 5: UChicago, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, NYU's Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Anderson School of Management at the University of California—Los Angeles. But UChicago took the No. 1 spot from UC Berkeley this year.

Moving up from No. 2, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Maryland tied with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Georgia to claim the top spot in this year's nursing master's program rankings. Duke University School of Nursing in North Carolina climbed up by one to claim the third spot.

Johns Hopkins ranked No. 1, as it did last year, in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program rankings. George Mason University School of Nursing in Virginia – which reported more graduates and resources per faculty – soared from a four-way tie at No. 39 to take the No. 2 spot. Duke tied with the University of Washington School of Nursing to round out the top three.

Duke also ranked No. 1 in all of the ranked nursing master's nursing practice specialties, including administration, family, both acute and primary care adult gerontology, and mental health.

Once again, Teachers College, Columbia University in New York was No. 1 in the graduate education schools rankings. This year, however, it tied with the University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Education , which climbed two spots.

The University of Michigan—Ann Arbor's School of Education dropped from the top position to tie with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies at No. 3. UCLA was previously tied at No. 7.

U.S. News also ranks nine education specialties, with the College of Education at Michigan State University claiming the top spot in the following categories: curriculum and instruction, educational administration, elementary teacher education, higher education administration and secondary teacher education.
