A Classic 2000s Delight

The title alone practically guarantees a formulaic, feel-good time. Uma Thurman provides a knock-out performance worthy of screwball originals, and her co-stars aren't too shabby either. Colin Firth is notorious for his leading male roles in romcoms like Bridget Jones' Diary , so his casting is perfect. Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows a familiarly scheming, but far more wholesome side to his acting repertoire. The film is chock-full of the typical screwball plot devices, from overly complicated problem-solving to impractically dramatic stakes, and has all the makings of a comfortable rom-com binge.

Tired of waiting for the perfect relationship, she decides to get artificially inseminated in order to start a family. She then meets Stan (O'Loughlin) and the two completely hit it off. Zoe might have found her one and only, but is that one and only ready for fatherhood?

A Surprisingly Poignant Rom-Com

Kudos are in order for an early 2010s film about artificial insemination and its surrounding cultural questions. Jennifer Lopez is an icon in more ways than one, including her romcom lead prowess . While Alex O'Loughlin may perhaps be better known for his stint as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-0 , he manages to bring his comedic genre-mashing chops to the role. While the premise is fresh, the momentum of this film can be a bit still at times, its ending is far worth the wait.

What Women Want (2000)

What Women Want is a classic pairing of rivals to relations. In it, Mel Gibson plays chauvinist advertising exec Nick Marshall who, after a freak accident with a blow dryer, is suddenly able to eavesdrop on women's thoughts. Having recently lost a promotion and with his company looking to conquer the more feminine market, he uses this newfound skill to his advantage to listen in on his new boss, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). Of course, this causes him to fall hard for her in the process. Between repairing his relationships with his female co-workers (and his young daughter) and coming up with the perfect ad campaign to impress his bosses, he takes full advantage of this newfound gift for as long as it lasts.

A Formula that Works

Acclaimed filmmaker Nancy Meyers is at her best in this film, as are Hunt and Gibson. Both actors were at the top of their game at the time, and their onscreen chemistry is absolutely electric. The message of empathy for one's fellow man (or woman, in this case), is hard to deny. Marshall's behavior is shown to stem from his upbringing in a casino, an insight that might otherwise have been lost in less adept hands. There's a formulaic nature to this film, yes, but it only serves to punctuate the story and its message all the more.

Elevated by a Brilliant Ensemble Cast

Released during the height of fable fantasy fervor, this modern take on classic fairy tale tropes is nothing short of delightful. There is a message of acceptance hidden deep beneath the overtures of classism. Plus, this cast reads like an understated who's who, from Catherine O'Hara as Penelope's mother, to James McAvoy as a kind, but subterfuging suitor, to Peter Dinklage and Reese Witherspoon as newfound friends Penelope finds along the way. And, with a PG rating, the film is wholesome enough to binge with some younger loved ones in tow.

Ball of Fire (1941)

Ball of Fire is a classic screwball comedy featuring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. The story centers around a group of bachelors (and one widower) who live and work together in a prim and proper pad. Desperate to understand and learn some more modern colloquialisms to add to the work, the youngest of them, Professor Potts, a grammarian in American slang, turns to Katherine "Sugarpuss" O'Shea for advice. A nightclub performer by trade, she only agrees to stay after finding herself on the run from police as a result of her mob boyfriend's shenanigans. The pair, of course, take a liking to each other, but are forced to put their feelings aside momentarily for the sake of the book and their lives after Sugarpuss' angry boyfriend comes a'calling.

A Screwball Comedy that Stands the Test of Time

This title perfectly encapsulates Stanwyck's character, a firecracker with a silver tongue for 'modern' American colloquialisms. Obvious references to the fable of Snow White aside, this juxtaposition of stuffiness and flamboyance makes for some incredible screwball shenanigans. The chemistry between the two leads is rife, though they are at times outmatched by those of their academic companions. A common matter in romantic comedies, the couple's attempts to save each other are of course what ultimately keep them apart for so long. Viewers will have to refrain from yelling at the screen for some more open and honest communication, which really would have solved just about all the woes of these two lovebirds to begin with.

This film is easily one of Sandler's all-time best comedies, with just the right mix of oddball to offset the otherwise romantic tropes. Set in the '80s with the costumes and soundtrack to match, this film has an understated realness of work relationships amid the ridiculousness of wedding day jams. Plus, it's a chance to check out the comedic stylings of the always hilarious Ellen Albertini Dow as Rosie.

Every Day (2018)

Based on the novel by David Levithan, Every Day follows the love story between 16-year-old Rhiannon (Angourie Rice), who falls in love with the mysterious 'A' (who is played by far too many actors to list here). 'A', you see, is a traveling spirit, an entity that wakes up in a different living teenage body, regardless of gender, every day. Rhiannon first meets 'A' when they wake up in the body of Justin, her otherwise neglectful boyfriend. A day spent alongside her, of course, causes 'A' to fall madly in love with her, which leads them to seek her out long after he leaves her boyfriend behind. Upon learning his secret, Rhiannon is challenged to fall and stay in love with someone whose gender-fluid, outward-facing form is forever in flux.

A Romance with Philosophical Undertones

This film does a stellar job of creating purpose for the characters in a cohesive narrative, it also manages to sneak in a handful of ethical conundrums, mostly centering around the agency of 'A' as they take over the lives of others. The bodies 'A' possess do not usually remember their previous day(s) spent taken over by 'A'. This begs the question of whether it is fair for 'A' to exist in others, especially when they take over bodies for an extended period of time, living their lives for them. The answer is, in a word no, a sad fact that both Rhiannon and 'A' both come to accept after time. Thankfully, 'A' manages to use their powers for good, for the most part, and still manages to leave an indelible impact on the lives they briefly possess.

There's nothing like a bit of time travel to up the stakes for romance. The Time Traveler's Wife stars Eric Bana as the traveler in question, Henry DeTamble, and Rachel McAdams as Clare Abshire, his wife. Based on Audrey Niffenegger's 2003 novel, the film follows DeTamble's entrances and exits into Clare's life, which is the result of an uncontrollable para-genetic disorder. As a result, he travels back and forth between different important moments of his life without notice. Unable to change much about them, he struggles to develop a relationship with the love of his life, for whom his sudden appearances and reappearances throughout the course of her life eventually take their toll.

Another Sci-Fi-Tinged Romance

There is a graceful fluidity to this romance in what might otherwise have been marred with overwrought science-fiction explanations. While it is at first unsettling to watch DeTamble meet up with his wife in her pre-pubescent years and beyond, their involvement over time serves to both bond them together and tear them apart. There is an uneasy feeling of knowing what will pass, reliving old memories in real-time, and not being able to spend moments in said real-time with the ones you love. The mystery of not knowing when and where the main character will appear and reappear makes for some brilliant dramatic moments, which are only punctuated further by the unknown of just when they might happen.

20 Timeless Romance Movies That Never Get Old

Overboard (1987).

Overboard is an '80s comedy classic. Starring real-life partners Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, this film follows a bratty socialite (Hawn) who loses her memory after falling overboard her yacht. The repair person she recently fired, Russell, comes to her aid but decides to use her loss to his advantage. Claiming to be her husband, he brings her home from the hospital to take care of his brood of rambunctious boys in their stuffed to the seams house. What will happen when she falls wise to his ploy? Will she stay 'married' and give up her former lifestyle? Or abandon this strange man and his family altogether. This film, which was remade in 2018 , is available on YouTube alongside the remake.

A Strange Premise that Has Aged Surprisingly Well

While the concept in this film is undoubtedly alarming, there is a deftness to the handling of this gaslighting plot. This is due, in part, to the skill of screenwriter Leslie Dixon, who would go on to create even more cult favorites like Mrs. Doubtfire just a few years later. The chemistry between Russell and Hawn, as well as their ability to play so well off of each other comedically, is why this film stands out as so crazily re-watchable years later, Stockholm syndrome and all. By some magic of filmmaking, both Russell's character and that of his rambunctious brood, seem to somehow, inexplicably, grow on the viewer with each watch.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

The iconic teen drama A Walk to Remember is based on an early Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. The film stars Shane West as Landon and Mandy Moore as Jamie. What starts out as a classic '50s Romeo and Juliet story meets 10 Things I Hate About You takes a hard turn into reality as forces beyond their control serve to push them apart. Will Jamie's illness push them apart? Love, understanding, and passion are constants as they navigate their youth with what time they have left.

A Timeless Tearjerker

There's nothing like young love and a coming-of-age romance, particularly when that film is as highly rewatchable as this one is. Melodramatic to its core, A Walk to Remember features iconic performances by both Shane West and Mandy Moore in one of her earliest roles. Moore's musical performance is expected, but stellar. Perhaps more poignant for fans of tearjerkers are their matrimonial scenes. Be prepared to break out the tissues for this one.

What Is The YouTube Category List?

The YouTube Category List is essentially all of the types of videos that you can publish on the platform. When you publish a video on YouTube, you can select a specific category to rank for. Think of it like YouTube is a giant book store, and you want to put your book in the correct category. You won't sell many copies of your comic book if you put it in the autobiography section.

What Categories Are There?

There are 15 categories in total on YouTube:

1: Film and Animation

The film and animation category is one of the biggest sections of YouTube.

Film is the Youtube Video category containing anything movie related. Think of things like movie trailers, movie reviews, and movie scenes. The youtube channels with the most views almost always come from trailers for movies made by big film and animation industries like A24, Disney, and Sony.

There are lots of creators in the film category who commit to franchises and niches. They make other film related videos like "The Film Theorists" and "ScreenRant" who use the hype around popular movies and TV Shows to make awesome content.

The animation category is popular for many Youtube channels, though often at a smaller scale.

This can be applied to studios as large as Pixar, all the way down to independent creators who make other animation related videos like "Jaiden Animations".

2: Autos and Vehicles

Autos and Vehicles is a very big niche on YouTube. This is everything from Car showings to basic tutorials on how to change a tire.

Channels like Mighty Car Mods make their content entirely around cars and adding really cool modifications to those cars.

The music category was the bread and butter of YouTube in its early years, and it is still a huge cash cow. A music video on a YouTube channel like VEVO or Sony can easily rake in hundreds of millions of views. Lots of independent creators also use YouTube to promote their music, posting covers, remixes and other independent content.

Famous Musicians like Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, and even Ed Sheeran used a YouTube Channel to start their music careers.

4: Pets & Animals

This category covers anything to do with animals and pets. The pets category people who make content around their pets, like pet vlogs, pet-care advice, and more. The biggest independent creator in this space is Brave Wilderness, who films real life analysis of all sorts of animals and insects.

The animals category includes videos related to animals or wildlife. This means it covers things like wildlife documentaries, Animal guides, and any content revolving around non-domesticated wildlife.

The sports category covers all content about sports related activities. This could be sports commentary, talk shows, game highlights, and more.

I personally am subscribed to SportsCenter, NFL, and sports podcasts like The Pat McAfee Show so I can keep up to date on football news, highlights and commentary.

6: Travel and Events

Travel and Events is a youtube category around the concept of travel, attractions, and tourism. Travel Channels are usually travel vlogs that follows independent creators as they explore cool places all over the globe.

Event Channels are also composed of Vlogs that shows the creators seeing popular or novel events like Coachella, The Area 51 Raid, and more.

One of my favorite event channels on YouTube is "Channel 5 With Andrew Callaghan". Andrew Callaghan makes event videos where he goes to events, rallies, and conventions all across the country to interview some of the strangest people you've ever met.

He basically finds where all the crazies are congregated and lets them talk in a mic for 10 minutes.

There is also a more serious side to his content, where he does reporting at major public events. He's been at many major political events in the recent years, from the DC Trucker Rally last winter to the Minnesota Black Lives Matter Protests in the Summer of 2020.

Recently, he even made a trip to Ukraine where he interviewed civilians and volunteer militia trapped in the war zone.

Disclaimer: His content includes interviewing people at very controversial and taboo settings. I'm not endorsing or disparaging any lifestyle or ideology. I just wanted to promote a channel I find entertaining.

You would be surprised how well a gaming channel can do on YouTube. Gaming channels can be gameplay walkthroughs, reviews, and even hour long streams of watching other people play some game. People want to know what their favorite creators think of the newest games.

A huge portion of the fresh and trending content on YouTube come from gaming channels, and some of them are even faceless YouTube channels .

Some of the most successful creators on the platform, like "PewDiePie" and "Mr. Beast", are Gaming Channels. Those two independent creators have a combined subscriber count of over 200 million people! (That's a little less than 2/3 of the United States Population!)

8: People and Blogs

This category refers to content about other people or their content. This includes individual success stories, drama channels, and informative topic videos about famous people.

Some YouTube channels focus at least partially on the drama of other YouTubers and celebrities and the drama surrounding it. An example of someone doing it well would be a channel like Philip Defranco, who essentially compresses hours worth of pop culture events, celebrity drama, and feel-good stories into a daily show.

Comedy is a pretty big category on YouTube, as most YouTubers try to make their content funny since it keeps people engaged and makes the content more fun. There are plenty of channels on the platform like "Smosh" and "CollegeHumor" that build their channel around sketch comedy and improv.

Another great source of comedy on YouTube is stand up comedy, and tons of comedians upload clips and bits of their material on YouTube. Channels like "Netflix is a Joke", "Comedy Central", and "The Laugh Factory" are a great way to find really funny stand-up bits and even full specials.

Prank videos used to be a staple of YouTube Comedy, but has slowly fazed out from the comedy category over the years after multiple incidents where Prank YouTubers broke the law, harmed themselves, and even harmed others for content. It quickly devolved from harmless fun to actual harassment and public nuisance.

10: Entertainment

The entertainment category looks at covering everything related to pop-culture and celebrities. Think of companies like "TMZ" or "Extra!" whose whole business model is making content and news revolving around celebrities lives.

For example, a little over a month ago Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars, and a YouTube video of that altercation gained tens of millions of views overnight! Other videos related to the incident also gained millions and millions of views over the life of that event's hype.

When something major happens in the entertainment industry, views in this YouTube video category skyrocket.

11: News and Politics

The News and Politics category is essentially any content about breaking news, political debates, or developing stories. It is much easier, in my opinion, to see 5 minute YouTube video of the nightly news on YouTube rather than sitting in front of a TV for an hour.

There are the big players, of course, like CNN and Fox News. However, political commentary is also a huge niche that people are looking up on YouTube.

You can find political commentary channels for almost any political identity, wether you are right wing, left wing, or somewhere in between.

12: How-to and Style

How-To Guides are some of the biggest resources that YouTube offers. Wether you want to see a YouTube video to learn how to parallel park or how to build a cabin from scratch, there are tutorial channels out there for you.

Crafting is also a very big sub category within the niche, and people love to watch how to do crafts and simple projects. 5-Minute Crafts has a huge following on almost exclusively short-form content.

13: Education

The Educational YouTube video category is a high school teacher's best friend. Channels like "Khan Academy" or "The Organic Chemistry Tutor" had incredibly helpful math and science lessons and educational videos that were staples of my High School and College Study Sessions.

The YouTube Channel "The Organic Chemistry Tutor" makes youtube videos about every basic math and science class from algebra, all the way to Calculus III and even Chemistry! His content helped me prepare for so many tests and exams over the years, and I love that YouTube channel so much!

With every educational YouTube Channel, there is also an air of entertainment to some of them that makes all their YouTube videos both fun and engaging. For someone to keep watching your YouTube Video, you need to keep them invested.

People like Hank and John Green use their Channel "VlogBrothers" to teach about everything related to Science and History. One brother is a Historian, while the other is a scientist, and they make their content around discussing some of the craziest facts and realities around both disciplines.

one YouTube video could be about how the Romans washed their clothes in Urine, and the next might be about how all bananas are clones of each other.

14: Science and Technology

Science and Technology is any content that refers to or revolves around Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).

Lots of YouTubers use their knowledge and proficiency in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to create incredible content. Tech Channels like "Marques Brownlee", "Mark Rober" and "Michael Reeves" use their Engineering experience to make Youtube videos that will attract anyone with an interest in STEM.

I'm an Engineering major, and these guys are living my fantasy; using STEM and computer technology to create really cool, if not comically elaborate, stuff.

15: Nonprofits and Activism

One of the best uses of YouTube is that it gives charitable organizations and important social movements a platform to share their content.

Wether they are showcasing everything the organization has done, or they are asking for donation, both are possible in this YouTube category. They make content where the video's main aim is to make people aware of what they are trying to achieve and how you can help.

How to Set Your Channel's Default Category

The easiest way to add a category to your content is to set your channel's default channel category and optimize the upload video process.

Here is how you do that:

1: Access YouTube Channel Studio

This will be in the top right corner of your YouTube screen. Simply click on your profile picture and select "YouTube Studio"

2: Select "Settings"

On the left side-bar, you will scroll down and select "settings". In the settings menu, you can edit the default category of your channel.

3: Select " Upload Defaults" and Go to "Advanced Settings"

From there, your content is set to a default category, meaning that any videos you post will be labeled under that category unless you change it manually. This makes the upload video process much easier if you have a definitive niche and post most of your videos within a specific category.

You can also use this section to edit the default Title and Description of every video, which is an easy way to share your existence on other platforms. Any time you create videos, they will be labeled under that default category unless you change it manually.

How To Change An Individual Channel's Category

Sometimes, you might need to edit your videos category on an individual basis and optimize the edit video process.

Follow these steps:

1: Select Content and Click on The Video You Want To Edit

In the left side panel, you will select the "Content" option. That will show you all of your videos and livestreams you've uploaded. Simply click on the thumbnail of the video whose category you want to update.

2: Click "Show More"

Scroll down to the bottom of the Video Details page and select "SHOW MORE".

3: Scroll Down and Edit Category

You will need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. From there, you will be able to toggle your video's specific category.

Remember, the category dropdown will be all the way at the bottom of the video details page. Also, these changes aren't automatic, so make sure you save your changes for them to be applied.

Do Categories Matter?

You're definitely in a better position for using YouTube video categories to label your content

It is definitely something you should always do, but YouTube's Algorithm is so powerful and complex, it will drive people to your content regardless of what category you placed the video under. Categories are essential for driving traffic, but they're only a piece of the pie.

The key to getting the algorithm to work for your channel is to be consistent in the type of content you generate. The more videos you make of a certain category, YouTube will send more people within that niche to check out your content.

How to Pick The Right Category

Categories aren't some sort of special recipe to farming views, but YouTube's Algorithm is looking for performance and consistency. You can't list under YouTube video categories that are unrelated to your actual content since the category is just part of YouTube's Complex algorithm.

It is pretty tough to decide which category you fall under, especially when your content can be so nuanced. However, there are 4 categories that get the most views on YouTube:

Comedy Videos

Entertainment/Pop-Culture

Every category on YouTube has plenty of potential, but if your best YouTube Category falls under those 4 options, then you are in luck, because they have the largest audiences!

All’s Fair in Love and Tennis

A long-awaited movie starring Zendaya and featuring threesomes, cheeky homoeroticism, and the sensation of having a tennis ball thwacked down your throat, ‘Challengers’ is guaranteed to thrill and titillate. Just maybe don’t expect it to do more than that.

Subtlety is not one of Luca Guadagnino’s virtues. The 52-year-old Italian director thrives on excess, on sequences that feel like they could suddenly spin out of control. When Ralph Fiennes’s platinum-plated record producer vamps impulsively to the Rolling Stones in 2015’s A Bigger Splash , it’s a display that feels equally true to the character’s boozy exhibitionism and the director’s narcissistic sense of showmanship; they’re both vibrating on the same ecstatic frequency, in search of emotional rescue. After more or less perfecting his florid, open-hearted style in Call Me by Your Name —a movie drenched in bittersweet sensations of love and loss, whose much-memed money shots still hold up—Guadagnino has lately cross-bred his instinct for melodrama with an unlikely (and only semi-convincing) stint as a kind of festival-circuit artsploitation specialist. In the misbegotten giallo remake Suspiria and the Twilight -adjacent YA romance Bones and All , the director drained his usually colorful palette and began treating his characters with the same tough love as a meat tenderizer; the acres of fetishistically splintered flesh on display teased a Cronenbergian mean streak. Such shock tactics were ultimately lacking, however. For all their lubricious gore (and, in the case of Suspiria , pretentious pedigree), these films ultimately felt more like designer provocations than genuine, dangerous acts of multiplex transgression.

There is one moment of body horror in Guadagnino’s new and epically hyper-extended love triangle Challengers : a knee injury suffered in the line of duty by one of its three tennis-playing protagonists. That this single, split-second bit of cartilage-busting brutality registers more powerfully than any of the bloody set pieces in Bones and All suggests that Guadagnino is back in his lane. Written by novelist (and YouTube sensation) Justin Kuritzkes—and inspired as much by Serena Williams’s infamous rage-drenched 2018 U.S. open loss to Naomi Osaka as such polyamorous classics Jules and Jim and Y Tu Mamá También — Challengers arrives as a proverbial “movie for grown-ups,” which is to say it’s a study of sexual power and frustration without a superhero in sight. It was supposed to premiere as an Oscar contender last fall at the Venice Film Festival but, under the shadow of the SAG-AFTRA strike, its producers decided to wait until a time when its stars—or maybe just Zendaya—could walk a red carpet again.

It’s not quite right to call Challengers an art movie, or even an adult one—it’s broad, commercial entertainment aimed at mainstream audiences. And it’s not subtle: The camerawork by Thai master cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom features numerous CGI-assisted shots in which tennis balls scream past our eyeballs at warp speed, as well as point-of-view shots from the perspective of the ball itself. During one key love scene, in order to underline the stormy nature of the feelings on screen, Guadagnino conjures up an actual storm—one nearly as blustery as anything in the trailer for Twisters . The effect is so goofy it’s stirring, or maybe it’s the other way around. The question is whether a director known for glossy diversions deserves points for literally throwing caution to the wind and trying to make something genuinely elemental, or whether he’s merely pumped his latest creation full of hot air.

At 131 minutes, Challengers is certainly inflated, but it moves swiftly thanks to the ace editing by Marco Costa. The cutting has to be clever in order to complement the screenplay’s structure, which serves and volleys its way through a 13-year timeline to chart the formation—and mutation—of a seductively symbiotic (and dysfunctional) three-way relationship whose participants are all equally in love (and hate) with themselves and each other. In terms of chronology, things begin with a meet-cute: soon after ascendant future singles superstar Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) meets junior doubles champions Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) at the afterparty for the U.S. Open junior championship, she invades their hotel room and starts pushing their buttons. After coaxing the boys into some mutual fooling around—sitting up straight like a line judge between her groping suitors—she proclaims that she’ll consider dating the winner of their upcoming one-on-one match.

“I don’t want to be a homewrecker,” Tashi says before she goes, but that’s exactly what she wants to be, and not just because it turns her on. An obvious prodigy with Serena-sized ambitions, she’s drawn to talent, and senses that Patrick and Art are too cozy to get the best out of themselves. (The first time we see them hanging out together, they’re gobbling hot dogs: 15, Guadagnino; love, subtlety.) Since the characters are all ego-stroked up-and-comers exploring their adult emotions—and their perfect, precision-tuned bodies—such naughty manipulation is all in good fun, a night to remember when they’re older. (“I’d let her fuck with me with her racquet,” says Patrick in a wry bit of figurative foreshadowing.) Cut to the present tense, though, and the trio’s mixture of intimacy and solidarity has exploded, along with their respective personal and professional aspirations. Both men have had a crack at dating Tashi, with Art managing to stay in her good graces as a long-time partner—but only because her own career has stalled. Patrick, meanwhile, has fallen off the map, only to strategically resurface at a podunk tournament where he vows to be a thorn in his old pal’s side. Suffice it to say that questions of winning and losing look very different in one’s 30s than in one’s teens, and also that the same competitive spirit that drives people toward greatness can also plunge them into abjection.

Defeat and disarray are qualities squarely within O’Connor’s wheelhouse; the British-born actor was brilliant last year in Italian director Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera playing a rumpled archaeologist whose preternatural ability to locate lost artifacts hasn’t helped him find himself. Here, he inhabits Patrick’s mercurial nature with just the right amount of self-deprecating humor, as if he’s amused by his own running tendencies toward sabotage. Muscles bulging and eyes gleaming with appetite, he’s the ideal foil for Faist’s slender, soulful Art, who’s too anxious about his talent (or lack thereof) to ever consider becoming his own worst enemy: where his rival laughs off encouragement, he thrives on it, but never seems fully satisfied by the results. (Faist, who has a Broadway performer’s rakish sense of razzle-dazzle, comes off here as a pensive puppy dog, while O’Connor is a cool cat.) Each man is, in his way, a sitting duck for Tashi, whose supreme passion is not for sex, but tennis—a sport whose pounding back-and-forth nature offers the only plausible outlet for her pugnacious stamina. Watching the young Tashi stalk around the court in between points is like National Geographic channel footage of a predator in action; it also recalls Mitch Hedberg’s line about how no matter how much one masters tennis, they’ll never be as good as a wall : “That motherfucker is relentless.”

Zendaya’s stardom, meanwhile, is itself a byproduct of relentlessness—a phenomenon that’s routinely insisted upon more than it is illustrated on screen. It’s not that the potential isn’t there. Rather, she possesses such an obviously impressive package of poise, beauty, and talent—topped off with the willingness, exemplified by her work on Euphoria , to go to dark places—that it’s easier to simply anoint her as a generational performer than judge her work. What does it say that many of her most memorable moments have come on red carpets, or during promotional junkets (or while being upstaged by Tom Holland on Lip Sync Battle )? For the most part, her movie roles have either been boringly ornamental—playing expectant, supportive, dramatically sidelined love interests in franchise IP ( Spider-Man , Dune ) or would-be tour-de-forces undermined by bad material (see Malcolm & Marie , if you dare) .

With Challengers , Zendaya finally has a part that could potentially turn her into a modern screwball goddess (or, more to the point, she’s crafted one in her capacity as a producer). There are scenes that work beautifully, like the early make-out routine, which vibrates with sly, deadpan eroticism. Mostly, though, the performance suggests an actress in search of a real character. It’s one thing for Tashi to sell herself to the men in her life as a streamlined, eyes-on-the-prize cipher—it’s a good way to string them along and keep herself at a remove—but as the movie goes on, it’s clear that Kuritzkes doesn’t have much of a sense of what makes Tashi tick beyond some abstract (and cartoonish) notion of excellence. We never really get a sense of how she feels to be a wife or a mother (roles she inhabits only in brief, perfunctory glimpses); the movie is obviously much more interested in the lost, sulky boys bobbing in her wake.

This would be fine if Challengers were as attuned to the rituals of male rivalry as, say, Ron Shelton’s White Men Can’t Jump —still one of the great American movies about competition, and one that uses sports as a kind of divining rod to tune into larger cultural frequencies. That movie shows us, time and again, how basketball contains multitudes: it’s a showcase for fashion; a melting pot for racial tensions; a series of contrasting and complementary philosophies. Challengers tries to make the same all-encompassing point about tennis—a thesis that frames life (and love) as a series of hard, hostile volleys, and reduces the world beyond the court to a blur (there’s not nearly enough here about the culture and customs of the pro tour, for instance). In purely kinetic terms, the climax may be the best-executed scene of Guadagnino’s career, surpassing Suspiria ’s grotesque ballet recitals. But the only thing really pressurizing the action is style—it’s hard to truly care about characters when they’re at the mercy of such mechanical storytelling contrivances.

“Tennis is a conversation,” says Tashi, as Patrick and Art drool in response. It’s a good line, but it also unintentionally gets at the essence of this appealing and well-made movie’s failure—the way its particular kind of filmmaking eloquence ends up saying almost nothing at all.

Civil War Plays Like a Nightmare. You Should Still See It.

A24’s most expensive movie to date is borderline incoherent. that doesn’t mean it’s not important..

The year is unspecified—it could be a few years into some alternate future, or it could be right now. The president, a clean-cut establishment type played by Nick Offerman, is unnamed, his party and political affiliations unclear (though his rhetoric in an address to the nation sounds disturbingly authoritarian). And the precise nature of the domestic conflict that has torn the United States apart and turned the nation’s major cities into zones of open warfare is unexplained. In Civil War , the provocative fourth feature from Alex Garland ( Ex Machina , Annihilation , Men ), the details about why and how America collapsed into violent chaos are immaterial. What Garland wants is to drop us into the middle of that violent chaos as it unfolds, to make us see our familiar surroundings—ordinary blocks lined with chain drugstores and clothing boutiques—recast as active battlegrounds, with snipers on rooftops and local militias enforcing their own sadistic versions of the law.

One thing Garland’s at times frustratingly opaque script does go out of its way to clarify is that the ideological fissures in this alternate version of America occur along different fault lines than the ones that remain from the country’s actual civil war. The main threat to what we’ll call the Offerman administration is the secessionist group the Western Forces, a Texas-California alliance that’s intentionally impossible to extrapolate from our current red state–blue state split. There is also a separate rebel movement of some kind based in Florida, but above all, there is unchecked street violence and general social disorder. One early exchange of dialogue suggests that the war has been going on for some 14 months, which seems like too short a time for the country to have fallen into the advanced state of dystopia in which we find it: highways choked with empty cars, most of the population in hiding, the internet all but nonfunctional except in a few urban centers. But again, the point is less plausibility than viscerality. Garland got his start writing a zombie movie, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later , and he has also co-written an award-winning action video game. Civil War , A24’s most expensive movie to date, sometimes plays like a mashup of those two genres, with the viewer as first-person player and our armed fellow citizens as the zombies.

As the film begins, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), a veteran war photographer, is in New York City, holed up at a hotel that doubles as a makeshift command center for the press. Knowing that the Western Forces are on the verge of taking the capital, Lee and her longtime professional partner, a wire-service reporter named Joel (Wagner Moura), are planning a perilous road trip from New York to D.C. in the unlikely hope of landing an interview with the embattled president. Lee’s longtime mentor, news editor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), warns them that the plan is sheer madness—then asks if, despite his age and limited mobility, he can get in on the action.

As they’re preparing to leave, they’re joined, despite Lee’s protests, by Jessie ( Priscilla ’s Cailee Spaeny), an aspiring photojournalist in her early 20s who idolizes Lee’s work but has no experience in war zones. Bringing along the stowaway Lee disparages as a “kindergartner” will only, she argues, put all of them in even more danger. These doubts turn out to be justified: The presence of Jessie, a live wire with a penchant for unnecessary risk-taking, makes the journey to D.C. even more perilous, while forcing Lee to confront how jaded she’s become after years of compartmentalizing her most scarring memories. On the way to the capital, this multigenerational foursome encounters gas-station vigilantes, a shootout at an abandoned Christmas-themed amusement park, and a gut-churning encounter with a racist militant played by Dunst’s real-life husband, Jesse Plemons.

In its vision of journalism as a form of amoral adventure-seeking, Civil War belongs to a long tradition of films about hardened war correspondents in far-flung places, movies like A Private War and The Year of Living Dangerously . But the fact that the carnage these reporters are documenting is homegrown shifts the inflection significantly. Suddenly it’s impossible to exoticize or otherwise alienate ourselves from the bloodshed onscreen, which makes us ask ourselves what we were doing exoticizing it in the first place. This effect of moral immediacy is Civil War ’s greatest strength, and the reason it feels like an important movie of its moment even if it isn’t a wholly coherent or consistently insightful one.

Garland’s idea of throwing us in medias res during a civil war in progress is a bold gambit, and his cinematic instincts—his sense of where to put a camera and how long to draw out a moment of suspense—are often keen. The horrible realities he makes us look at—intra-civilian combat, physical and psychological torture, the everyday depths of human depravity—are summoned powerfully enough that Civil War remains emotionally and physically affecting even as the ideas it seeks to explore remain fuzzy. Is this a critique of contemporary journalism or a salute to the courage of reporters on the front lines? If it’s meant to be suspended somewhere in between, how does the filmmaker position himself on that line, and how should we, the audience, feel about the protagonists’ sometimes dubious choices?

Even as they document street battles and point-blank executions, adrenaline junkies Jessie and Joel occasionally exchange devilish grins. Meanwhile, Lee is all but incapable of normal human relationships because of her unacknowledged PTSD. A late sequence finds them unofficially embedded with an especially ruthless death squad; it would seem important to establish whether this alignment is meant to signify their ultimate journalistic corruption or a necessary compromise for the survival of the Fourth Estate. Even on the level of plot logic, the movie poses a question that the script’s curiously thin worldbuilding never answers: If the internet and most of the nation’s industrial infrastructure are in ruins, how are ordinary people reading Joel’s articles and looking at the photos that Lee herself struggles for hours to upload? If it is intended in part as a satire of journalistic opportunism, Civil War should be more specific about the conditions of 21 st -century media in wartime, especially given that it’s coming out at a moment when front-line reporters face more physical danger than at any time in recent memory.

All we learn of Lee’s background is that, like Jessie, she is from a farm town in the interior of the U.S., with parents who are in stubborn denial about the crumbling of the republic. But because Kirsten Dunst is a remarkable artist, she makes this somewhat underwritten character, who on paper could have been a stoic “badass” stereotype, into a complex and indelible presence. Dunst also, perhaps for the first time, loses the girlish quality she has brought even to middle-aged characters: Lee Smith is a plain, scowling woman with a glum, even abrasive mien. She’s a person whose perspective on life has narrowed down to the size of a camera lens, yet she’s also a committed journalist and a fiercely loyal colleague. As the other three sort-of protagonists, Moura, Henderson, and Spaeny all turn in finely tuned performances that bring a depth to their characters beyond what the script provides, but it’s Dunst whose thousand-yard stare and deep-buried grief will stay with me.

“What kind of American are you?” Plemons’ fatigues-and-pink-sunglasses-clad character asks the journalists one by one as he terrorizes them at gunpoint in the movie’s scariest and most successful sequence. (Not for nothing, it’s also the moment that suggests the most strongly that the vaguely defined conflict in this fictive America has everything to do with race.) That may be the screenplay’s smartest single line, in that it dispenses with the metaphorical quality of Civil War ’s imagined political dystopia and presents us with the real question many Americans are asking each other and themselves right now, sometimes in a self-reflective mode, sometimes in a contentious or overtly threatening one. As the unfolding of that encounter with Plemons makes clear, as soon as the question is asked with a weapon in your hand, it becomes a trick question, posed not to start a conversation but to set a trap. Civil War often leaves the audience feeling trapped in an all-too-realistic waking nightmare, but when it finally lets us go, mercifully short of the two-hour mark, it sends us out of the theater talking.

If there has been a common thread — an invisible string, if you will — connecting the last few years of Taylor Swift’s output, it has been abundance.

Nearly 20 years into her career, Swift, 34, is more popular and prolific than ever, sating her ravenous fan base and expanding her cultural domination with a near-constant stream of music — five new albums plus four rerecorded ones since 2019 alone. Her last LP, “Midnights” from 2022, rolled out in multiple editions, each with its own extra songs and collectible covers. Her record-breaking Eras Tour is a three-and-a-half-hour marathon featuring 40-plus songs, including the revised 10-minute version of her lost-innocence ballad “All Too Well.” In this imperial era of her long reign, Swift has operated under the guiding principle that more is more.

What Swift reveals on her sprawling and often self-indulgent 11th LP, “The Tortured Poets Department,” is that this stretch of productivity and commercial success was also a tumultuous time for her, emotionally. “I can read your mind: ‘She’s having the time of her life,’” Swift sings on “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a percolating track that evokes the glitter and adoration of the Eras Tour but admits, “All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting ‘more.’” And yet, that’s exactly what she continues to provide, announcing two hours after the release of “Poets” that — surprise! — there was a second “volume” of the album, “The Anthology,” featuring 15 additional, though largely superfluous, tracks.

Gone are the character studies and fictionalized narratives of Swift’s 2020 folk-pop albums “Folklore” and “Evermore.” The feverish “Tortured Poets Department” is a full-throated return to her specialty: autobiographical and sometimes spiteful tales of heartbreak, full of detailed, referential lyrics that her fans will delight in decoding.

Swift doesn’t name names, but she drops plenty of boldfaced clues about exiting a long-term cross-cultural relationship that has grown cold (the wrenching “So Long, London”), briefly taking up with a tattooed bad boy who raises the hackles of the more judgmental people in her life (the wild-eyed “But Daddy I Love Him”) and starting fresh with someone who makes her sing in — ahem — football metaphors (the weightless “The Alchemy”). The subject of the most headline-grabbing track on “The Anthology,” a fellow member of the Tortured Billionaires Club whom Swift reimagines as a high school bully, is right there in the title’s odd capitalization: “thanK you aIMee.”

At times, the album is a return to form. Its first two songs are potent reminders of how viscerally Swift can summon the flushed delirium of a doomed romance. The opener, “Fortnight,” a pulsing, synth-frosted duet with Post Malone, is chilly and controlled until lines like “I love you, it’s ruining my life” inspire the song to thaw and glow. Even better is the chatty, radiant title track , on which Swift’s voice glides across smooth keyboard arpeggios, self-deprecatingly comparing herself and her lover to more daring poets before concluding, “This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel, we’re modern idiots.” Many Swift songs get lost in dense thickets of their own vocabulary, but here the goofy particularity of the lyrics — chocolate bars, first-name nods to friends, a reference to the pop songwriter Charlie Puth ?! — is strangely humanizing.

For all its sprawl, though, “The Tortured Poets Department” is a curiously insular album, often cradled in the familiar, amniotic throb of Jack Antonoff’s production. ( Aaron Dessner of the National, who lends a more muted and organic sensibility to Swift’s sound, produced and helped write five tracks on the first album, and the majority of “The Anthology.”) Antonoff and Swift have been working together since he contributed to her blockbuster album “1989” from 2014, and he has become her most consistent collaborator. There is a sonic uniformity to much of “The Tortured Poets Department,” however — gauzy backdrops, gently thumping synths, drum machine rhythms that lock Swift into a clipped, chirping staccato — that suggests their partnership has become too comfortable and risks growing stale.

As the album goes on, Swift’s lyricism starts to feel unrestrained, imprecise and unnecessarily verbose. Breathless lines overflow and lead their melodies down circuitous paths. As they did on “Midnights,” internal rhymes multiply like recitations of dictionary pages: “Camera flashes, welcome bashes, get the matches, toss the ashes off the ledge,” she intones in a bouncy cadence on “Fresh Out the Slammer,” one of several songs that lean too heavily on rote prison metaphors. Narcotic imagery is another inspiration for some of Swift’s most trite and head-scratching writing: “Florida,” apparently, “is one hell of a drug.” If you say so!

That song , though, is one of the album’s best — a thunderous collaboration with the pop sorceress Florence Welch, who blows in like a gust of fresh air and allows Swift to harness a more theatrical and dynamic aesthetic. “Guilty as Sin?,” another lovely entry, is the rare Antonoff production that frames Swift’s voice not in rigid electronics but in a ’90s soft-rock atmosphere. On these tracks in particular, crisp Swiftian images emerge: an imagined lover’s “messy top-lip kiss,” 30-something friends who “all smell like weed or little babies.”

It would not be a Swift album without an overheated and disproportionately scaled revenge song, and there is a doozy here called “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” which bristles with indignation over a grand, booming palette. Given the enormous cultural power that Swift wields, and the fact that she has played dexterously with humor and irony elsewhere in her catalog, it’s surprising she doesn’t deliver this one with a (needed) wink.

Plenty of great artists are driven by feelings of being underestimated, and have had to find new targets for their ire once they become too successful to convincingly claim underdog status. Beyoncé, who has reached a similar moment in her career, has opted to look outward. On her recently released “Cowboy Carter,” she takes aim at the racist traditionalists lingering in the music industry and the idea of genre as a means of confinement or limitation.

Swift’s new project remains fixed on her internal world. The villains of “The Tortured Poets Department” are a few less famous exes and, on the unexpectedly venomous “But Daddy I Love Him,” the “wine moms” and “Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best” who cluck their tongues at our narrator’s dating decisions. (Some might speculate that these are actually shots at her own fans.) “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” is probably the most satisfyingly vicious breakup song Swift has written since “All Too Well,” but it is predicated on a power imbalance that goes unquestioned. Is a clash between the smallest man and the biggest woman in the world a fair fight?

That’s a knotty question Swift might have been more keen to untangle on “Midnights,” an uneven LP that nonetheless found Swift asking deeper and more challenging questions about gender, power and adult womanhood than she does here. It is to the detriment of “The Tortured Poets Department” that a certain starry-eyed fascination with fairy tales has crept back into Swift’s lyricism. It is almost singularly focused on the salvation of romantic love; I tried to keep a tally of how many songs yearningly reference wedding rings and ran out of fingers. By the end, this perspective makes the album feel a bit hermetic, lacking the depth and taut structure of her best work.

Swift has been promoting this poetry-themed album with hand-typed lyrics, sponsored library installations and even an epilogue written in verse. A palpable love of language and a fascination with the ways words lock together in rhyme certainly courses through Swift’s writing. But poetry is not a marketing strategy or even an aesthetic — it’s a whole way of looking at the world and its language, turning them both upside down in search of new meanings and possibilities. It is also an art form in which, quite often and counter to the governing principle of Swift’s current empire, less is more.

Sylvia Plath once called poetry “a tyrannical discipline,” because the poet must “go so far and so fast in such a small space; you’ve got to burn away all the peripherals.” Great poets know how to condense, or at least how to edit. The sharpest moments of “The Tortured Poets Department” would be even more piercing in the absence of excess, but instead the clutter lingers, while Swift holds an unlit match.

Movie Review: ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’

NEW YORK (OSV News) – Moviegoers tempted by a title like “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.) are presumably not in search of Shakespearian levels of dramatic insight. Even so, the disparity between the reasonably impressive special effects on offer in the film and its low-grade human interaction remains noticeable.

In creating this sequel to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” returning director Adam Wingard and screenwriters Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater at least set themselves a fresh goal. Namely, to have the two familiar creatures of the title abandon their longstanding feud and unite for a worthy purpose.

Their human handlers hope the monsters — within this franchise known as Titans — can come together to defeat an evil ape king and the ice-spewing dragon he’s enslaved to serve his own purposes. Teamwork makes the dream work, after all.

In between the outsized battles that ensue, viewers are invited to care, once again, about the relationship between scientist Ilene (Rebecca Hall) and her adoptive indigenous daughter, Jia (Kaylee Hottle). Another character from the previous outing, podcaster Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), is also part of the mix. Dan Stevens plays newbie Trapper, an adventurous veterinarian.

The movie’s respectful treatment of Jia’s deafness can be commended as implicitly pro-life. But the fact that Kong serves as the closest thing the story has to a moral compass is not a good sign.

Still, he frowns at oppression, befriends an initially hostile young simian of his own species and saves the life of an enemy — albeit only momentarily, since the rescued opponent proves implacable. All this is easier to take than the predictable idealization of the nature-friendly lifestyle of Jia’s extended tribe or the notion that they can communicate telepathically.

Such ideas might confuse impressionable kids. But this latest clash of the Titans is possibly acceptable for older adolescents, a few off-color exclamations in the dialogue notwithstanding.

The film contains stylized monster violence, about a dozen mild oaths, a few crude terms and a couple of crass expressions. The OSV News classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
