Final theses

Prerequisites.

We preferably accept students with a major in Finance and Accounting (seminars and/or lectures) as well as former project study participants.

Furthermore, the student has to make sure to fulfil all necessary requirements of TUM (e.g. enough credits) to commence the thesis. If the number of applications exceeds the capacity of our chair, the selection of students will be based on grades (in total and grades in our lectures and seminars), the student’s field of interest and the current term of the student.

Application

The applications for a thesis under the supervision of our chair are collected four times a year. To sucessfuly apply, you need to hand-in your application exclusively via our official thesis application form that can be accessed two weeks before the respective application deadlines under the following link:

EF Thesis Application Form

The following documents that need to be included in your thesis application via our form should be named accordingly with "Lastname_Firstname_Documentname":

  • Transcript of Records (ToR)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Exposé (for students applying with their own topics)

Please note that the access to the form is restricted outside of the application window (of two weeks before the application deadlines). Also, note that we cannot accept applications that are not correctly submitted over our official thesis application form or that are incomplete .

Regarding the choice of your topic there are two options:

1 . You apply for a specific research topic related to ongoing research projects at the chair that are listed on the following page: Research topics .

2 . You apply with your own research topic that is related to our research interest in Entrepreneurial Finance. In this case, we ask you to provide a short exposé where you should present your topic and motivation. To be specific, the research proposal should address the following four areas on a two-page proposal:

(1) A concise formulation of your research question and subsequently derived hypothesis.

(2) A detailed description of the methodological approach (quantitative/qualitative) to answer the research question.

(3) A concrete data acquisition strategy that addresses the particularities of private market data. You have to specify the databases employed and planned data enrichment or merging steps.

(4) A brief synthesis of the line research your thesis builds upon.

Please note that submitting a proposal does not entitle you to write your thesis at the Chair of Entrepreneurial Finance. The submission will be reviewed and could be rejected at any time without cause.

According to the examination regulations of the grade management office of our faculty, the process time (from the date of registration of your thesis) is as follows:

  • Master thesis (TUM-BWL/TUM-WIN/TUM-NAWI/TUM-WITEC/MBA/EMBA):  six months
  • Bachelor thesis:  three months

After a notification of acceptance, the applicant needs to contact their respective supervisor. The topic might be modified, if necessary, in consultation with the supervisor; however, the thesis is to be registered at the examination office typically within four weeks.

For a Bachelor thesis,  students should meet their supervisor no more than three times:

  • Specification of the topic
  • Meeting to discuss the structure of the paper
  • Optional meeting for further questions

For a Master thesis, students should meet their supervisor appr. four times:

  • Two to three meetings to discuss the structure of the paper

Submission and Thesis defense

Please refer to the formal submission requirements of your faculty's grademanagement office. In general, theses are to be handed in digitally to your supervisor/ TUM MGT grade management office typically via email. One MS Word file and one PDF file must be submitted and named: “Thesis_StudentName_ThesisTitle_DateSubmitted”.   Additional data on which the thesis is based on should be made available to your supervisor if requested.

For MBA master-theses, an oral thesis defense is required after submission. Please plan ahead of time (minimum 4 weeks before planned defense) to schedule an appointment with your supervisor.

For all other theses, an oral presentation is not mandatory but can be requested by the supervisor.

Bachelor and Master thesis

In this section, you find potential topics for a bachelor and master thesis based on the research topics, we are working on at the Chair for Supply and Value Chain Management. We encourage students to write their thesis in English language. Research journals are majorly published in English, and companies today expect their employees to speak English fluently.

We preferably accept students with a significant number of lectures in supply and value chain management and related fields, as well as former participants of the advanced seminar of our chair. Nevertheless, we are always happy to receive excellent applications from students with other focus areas/ qualifications that relate to our field. The number of available topics for theses is limited by the capacity of the chair. If the number of applications is exceeding the capacity of the chair, theses will be allocated according to your previous seminars, elective course, and personal interests.

Currently tendered topics by the chair

Here, you find specific topics tendered by the chair at the moment. If you are interested, please use the “Apply now” button above.

Bachelor theses

Currently, there are no tendered topics from the chair. Please apply with an own topic suggestion.

Master theses

Topic: Markdown optimization for fresh categories (Kaufland)

For a retailer, ordering the right quantity of products is a crucial task on a daily level – too much quantity leads to food waste whereas too little leads to out – of – stock situations, lost sales, and dissatisfied customers. Excess stocks are particularly c ritical in fresh categories since the items must be sold off within a very short time due to their short best – before date. In order to sell the items before they perish (e.g., before reaching the best before date), targeted discounts are given by the employees in the stores. If a price discount i s too high, the remaining stock may be salvaged quickly, and the margin losses may be too high. On the other side, if the price discounts are too low, the risk of food waste increases.

The aim of t his master’s thesis is to develop an approach for profit – optimized markdown pricing in fresh categories (bakery, dairy and/ or counter) on a market – specific and item – specific level, with the goal to minimize the total write – offs and waste (losses from pric e reduction and remaining stock).

For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: Markdown optimization for fresh categories

The tasks include:

  • Complete a structured literature review about markdown policies for overstocks
  • Structurally derive decision problem and formalize it as a stochastic – dynamic optimization model
  • Implement the decision problem as a simulation model (e.g., in Python or AnyLogic)
  • Collect data from Ka ufland and prepare it for the application
  • Complete numerical studies to generate some managerial insights
  • Develop plan for potential implementation of the tool at Kaufland

A real – world dataset will be provided

Topic: Food waste in the hospitality and food service sector

Catering for a large number of people, as is the case in canteens, at events, or in hotels, for example, poses major challenges for service providers. Consumers require an attractive offer of dishes, while their preferences and hunger are hardly known. At the same time, the provider must prevent empty buffets and sold-out meals at all costs, a setting that practically provokes food waste. We want to approach this problem from the providers’ point of view, analyze the current way of planning the quantities and meals in facilities such as hotels, canteens, mass catering, etc. and find strategies for improvement.

The Master thesis should cover the following tasks:

  • Literature overview of planning approaches in this area (both empirical and modeling-based)
  • Development of an interview guide based on open research questions appearing from the literature review (in coordination with the supervisor)
  • Finding and contacting suitable interviewees
  • Conducting the interviews and analysis of the gathered information via qualitative content analysis
  • Derivation of improvement measures

Topic: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem

Patients who are admitted to a hospital as inpatients must be assigned a bed while respecting certain constraints. For instance, gender-mixed rooms are usually to be avoided, and it is desirable to assign patients of similar age to a room since this has been shown to increase patient satisfaction. Transfers of a patient to a different room during their stay are possible but should be minimized in order to reduce work for the nurses and stress for the patients. The goal of the master’s thesis is to go beyond a rolling horizon approach by formulating the patient-to-bed assignment problem with stochastic arrivals and lengths of stay of patients using Markov decision processes (MDPs).

For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem

The specific tasks to be performed include:

  • Generate explicit distributions and test instances from the real data set
  • Set up an automated instance generator
  • Formulate an MDP for the case with a stochastic length of stay
  • Formulate an MDP for the case where both length of stay and patient arrivals are stochastic
