The Best History Podcasts to Listen to Right Now

T hose who don’t study the past, as the saying goes, are doomed to repeat it. That sentiment feels particularly true in this particular political moment, but it can also be applied to less obvious moments from the history of sports, culture and crime. Thankfully, wise podcast listeners looking for a soundtrack to their next long road trip or Sunday chores have plenty of worthy options for learning those historical lessons.

And those options are a far cry from a dry high school textbook read aloud: Many of today’s best history podcasts immerse listeners in the moments they examine, whether they be the French Revolution or the fledgling years of hip-hop. They cover topics ranging from past presidencies to Oprah Winfrey’s rise, entertain with tales of Hollywood scandal and invite listeners to play detective on mysteries of yore. Some spend hundreds of hours on a single subject or time period. Others simply offer nostalgic missives from faraway places and long-ago times.

But all of the series can teach today’s listeners lessons about how we have evolved (or, in some cases, devolved) as a society, whether culturally, socially or politically. For podcast fans looking for something more specific, or perhaps educational, than those on offer in TIME’s annual “50 Best Podcasts” list , here are all the best history podcasts to listen to right now.

30 for 30

This audio spinoff of ESPN’s famed 30 for 30 documentary series, hosted by Jody Avirgan, explores sports stories from history exclusively in the podcast format. Most episodes cover a different sports saga, with the exception of a few mini-series that dive deep into one person or topic. The best of those series, “Bikram,” explores the #MeToo scandal surrounding Bikram Choudhury , a powerful cult-like figure in the yoga community, from the perspective of a former Bikram devotee, Julia Lowrie Henderson. Henderson admirably hands the microphone to Choudhury’s victims to share their experiences, setting an example for how to tell a story about perpetrators of abuse while honoring survivors’ pain.

Backstory

Plenty of history podcasts are made by curious, diligent lay-people. This one comes directly from academics, which means it’s especially accurate, thorough and reliable. But don’t mistake academic for tedious — it’s also entertaining. U.S. historians Ed Ayers, Brian Balogh, Nathan Connolly and Joanne Freeman of Virginia Humanities endeavor to look at today’s headlines through the lens of American history. They assure their listeners that these are the stories they “ want to learn,” not the ones they “ had to learn” in history class. Last year, in a particularly successful series, they covered the history of media, including one episode specifically on the history of fake news . (Spoiler alert: founding father Benjamin Franklin had a hand in creating fake news for political purposes.)

Cocaine and Rhinestones

Cocaine and Rhinestones

This obsessively researched, essayistic show examines the history of country music and some of its icons. Even those who have never donned a cowboy hat will appreciate the sordid and controversial history of the genre. In the first episode, host Tyler Mahan Coe investigates why Loretta Lynn’s birth control song “The Pill” was banned from radio stations while much more violent and morally dubious fare from her male counterparts was not. In later installments, he investigates the rise and fall of Spade Cooley, who was convicted of brutally murdering his wife in 1961 only to be granted a pardon by then-California governor Ronald Reagan years later. Coe, the son of country outlaw David Allan Coe, grew up hearing versions of many of these stories. But his rigorous re-examination of facts and fables lays out a compelling case for their continued relevance, especially when it comes to sexism in the music business.

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

Hardcore History

If you are a fan of history podcasts, you’ve likely run across Dan Carlin’s work. One of the early pioneers in podcasting, Carlin is, above all else, a skilled orator. He doesn’t interview guests or mix in audio effects. On his own, he dramatically narrates some of the most epic moments in human history with such color that Hollywood producers looking for new material ought to take notice. Carlin focuses on leaders ( Genghis Khan , Alexander the Great, Hitler ), atrocities (war crimes, subjugation, nuclear proliferation) and wars (Punic, World and Cold, to name a few). His stories involve high-stakes and shocking twists that will keep even the least academically inclined listeners on edge, which is good news since the episodes have grown epically long: His series on the fall of Rome, “Death of the Republic,” stretches 13 hours.

History of Rome & Revolutions

Revolutions

Mike Duncan’s comprehensive podcasts are built for history lovers. His best-known show studied the history of Rome from Aeneas’ founding to the empire’s fall, which, for those unfamiliar with Roman history, involves murder, betrayal, civil war and a handful of completely crazed and depraved emperors. Duncan has since gone on to record a “Revolutions” series that examines, well, revolutions (French, American, Russian, etc.). It’s a smart choice of topic: Conflict makes for good drama. But what helps Duncan’s shows stand apart is the way he casually inflects his accounts with anecdotes and humor. His voice makes for easy listening, and you’ll find yourself devouring episode after episode.

Lore

It wouldn’t be a podcast list without at least a nod to the medium’s favorite genre: true crime. “Lore” host Aaron Mahnke explores real-life scary stories, fables and mysteries from the past with a conspiratorial tone that evokes the feeling of sitting around a campfire. In theory, the truth should assuage our fears, but it turns out that real stories are often scarier than fiction. Early episodes — about a town ravaged by what the townspeople believed to be a violent beast, the origins of an early asylum and a particularly creepy doll — prove especially haunting. (The podcast has since gotten a television adaptation on Amazon .)

Making Oprah

Making Oprah

Any person with even a passing interest in Oprah should check out this throughly researched, totally captivating biography of the media mogul’s Chicago years. The show focuses on Oprah, naturally, and how she changed American attitudes towards race, gender and politics. But the series also branches out into a larger discussion of the talk show host format and the massive impact it had on societal attitudes in the 1980s and 1990s. Host Jenn White (who went on to make Making Obama , as well) interviews producers, executives and Oprah Winfrey herself to learn what makes Oprah different from any other icon in pop culture. (Spoiler alert: It has a lot to do with her work ethic and meticulousness, as demonstrated by the fascinating story behind the famous “You get a car!” moment .)

The Memory Palace

Memory Palace

This long-running podcast consists of a series of vignettes about various objects, people and places throughout history, like the old Dreamland amusement park in Coney Island before it burned down in 1911. Host Nate DiMeo purposefully omits episode descriptions in the hopes that listeners will begin each story blind and give in to the memories that each individual subject evokes. He tells empathetic stories about his subjects and conjures dream-like settings with vivid descriptions and wistful commentary. The episodes can get somewhat esoteric. DiMeo gave one particularly good episode a title that could never fit on the iTunes charts: “ Notes on an Imagined Plaque to Be Added to the Statue of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Upon Hearing That the Memphis City Council Has Voted to Move It and the Exhumed Remains of General Forrest and His Wife, Mary Ann Montgomery Forrest, from Their Current Location in a Park Downtown, to the Nearby Elmwood Cemetery .” And on the event of the 2016 presidential election, he simply read Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” in its entirety. But DiMeo is after a nostalgic feeling more than any one fact, and he succeeds.

Mogul

The best biographical podcasts focus not on a person but on some larger theme into which that person’s life offers a window. Mogul is a perfect example of such a show. The series covers the life and death of Chris Lighty, a manager who represented Missy Elliott , 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes, and, in following his story, traces the history of hip-hop. Host Reggie Ossé, a former industry lawyer who knew Lighty, brings passion to the story of his old friend. He pulls in listeners, whom he dubs “internets,” with the glitz of private parties and astronomic success, but then explores the underbelly of that success. This is one of the most considerate meditations on mental health issues available in podcasts today. The astounding series is also a testament to the storytelling talents of Ossé (a.k.a. Combat Jack), who passed away in 2017.

More Perfect

More Perfect

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the creators behind the beloved and long-running podcast “Radiolab” are also behind one of the best history podcasts available. Each episode of More Perfect delves into a specific Supreme Court case and tries to get inside the justice’s heads to understand why they made the decisions that have had decades- or even centuries-long ripple effects in American society. For anyone interested in the decisions of the Supreme Court — and anyone living in America should be, considering how their rulings can fundamentally change our lives — More Perfect helps us to understand why American history has unfolded the way it has and what the may be in store for the future. Last year, More Perfect turned its focus to the 27 amendments to the constitution and put out an “album” of original music and art inspired by each of them.

Nice Try

Avery Trufelman has become a well-known voice in podcasting with the beloved design show 99% Invisible and its spinoff series about clothing design, Articles of Interest . Her latest podcast focuses on people who attempted to design utopias throughout history. Spoiler alert: These blissful communities rarely succeed. The first episode tells the story of Jamestown , which is radically different from the Disneyfied version depicted in Pocahontas . Trufelman, who has a soothing yet engaging voice, chronicles all the woes of this early American colony, from cannibalism to a stick of dynamite blowing up in John Smith’s lap. Over the course of several episodes, a storyline begins to emerge about humanity’s best intentions in constructing a society, and why ambitious founders always seem to fall short.

Presidential

Presidential

In each episode of this Washington Post podcast, host Lillian Cunningham dives into the life and legacy of a different American president. The show often focuses on the tension between how we perceive these historical figures and who they actually were — as in one running joke in which Cunningham asks historians what it would be like to go on a blind date with various presidents. The show boasts enviable guests like Pulitzer-winning historian David McCullough and journalist Bob Woodward . Originally released as a series leading up to the 2016 election, the podcast remains evergreen. Taken together, the episodes show that what Americans wanted from and required of our most prominent elected official has fundamentally changed over the years.

Revisionist History

Revisionist Hisory

Famed writer Malcolm Gladwell has always made compelling cases for the counterintuitive narrative — for better or worse . His podcast reexamines “overlooked” moments in history, like why a famed basketball player made the illogical decision to favor a worse free throw form or why an artist who broke the glass ceiling only ended up reconfirming gender biases. Gladwell comes alive when tackling societal injustices that are particularly irksome to him: One of his best episodes begins as a diatribe against golf but evolves into a gripping investigation into how the wealthy evade tax law. In another series, Gladwell examines how small choices at American universities, like what food to serve in the cafeteria, can have a massive impact on what schools low-income students can attend.

Slow Burn

It can be difficult to make history feel urgent. But Slate’s excellent podcast Slow Burn has produced two gripping seasons about the Watergate and Lewinsky scandals, respectively. For listeners who did not live through the Nixon or Clinton presidencies — or are too young to remember them — the stories provide necessary background to the current political moment. But the show also pushes listeners who do remember to re-contextualize the major news events of their past, like when, exactly, the public was pushed over the edge by Nixon’s lies or whether the press’ coverage of Monica Lewinsky was tinged with sexism . Slow Burn implicitly compares those two historical events to our current political moment and asks whether there is a lesson that we, the voters, can learn from these incidents. After completing those two seasons, fans should seek out host Leon Neyfakh’s new podcast Fiasco on the platform Luminary. That show takes a deep dive into the 2000 presidential election and recount.

Throughline

Throughline

Ramtin Arablouei and Rund Abdelfatah, the hosts of NPR’s new podcast Throughline , are here to remind us that we must heed the past as we consider what it means to live in the present. The two hosts show how past events led to a current headline-making moment, like how the long history of black athletes protesting at sporting events stoked the reaction to Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem. In another episode, they study the history of militarization at the U.S.-Mexico border that preceded Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. Unlike many of the podcasts on this list, which are designed for history buffs, this is a show that news junkies need in order to fully understand the headlines and supplement their daily media intake.

Uncivil

Hosts Jack Hitt and Chenjerai Kumanyika promise to teach listeners the Civil War history they didn’t learn in school. Their revelations will make you question whether we need to tear apart our American history books (if you weren’t thinking about that already) and rewrite a more accurate — and bleaker — account of our own history. One powerful episode explores how Robert E. Lee and his followers spread the narrative in schools that the war was about states’ rights, not slavery, after the South lost — despite the Confederacy’s well-documented focus on protecting the institution of slavery during the war. Hitt and Kumanyika deftly connect these historical events to our perceptions of the Civil War, slavery and race today as a national debate wages over confederate monuments , reparations and our divisions as a country.

You Must Remember This

You Must Remember This

Karina Longworth’s glorious series on the secrets and scandals of 20th-century Hollywood is exalted by podcast fans for a reason. Yes, the stories contrast the glamour and romanticism of old Hollywood with the sex, violence and general depravity that so many in the industry seemed to be engaging in. But Longworth’s voice is hypnotic and her stories completely submerge the listener in a bygone era, as otherwise distant icons like Marilyn Monroe and monsters like Charles Manson suddenly feel tangible and accessible. The show recently went on “indefinite hiatus,” but there’s a massive backlog of episodes for anyone obsessed with tinseltown or scandal.

Fascinating history podcasts, ranked

Slow Burn

1.  Slow Burn

‘Slow Burn’ takes deep dives into modern American history, from Watergate to the LA riots via the Iraq War and the killings of Biggie and Tupac. Created by Slate, episodes are hosted by varying presenters, and are typically encapsulating from beginning to end. Often, these are moments in history you already know about, but have never learned about in this much detail before. These seriously in-depth explainers will keep you hooked for an entire road trip, guaranteed.

The History of the World in 100 Objects

2.  The History of the World in 100 Objects

The BBC’s excellent bite-size journey through the history of the world initially ran through 2010 and probably wasn’t called a podcast, but it lives on in that form. Narrated by art historian Neil Macgregor - then director of the British museum - it does exactly what the title suggests, being a loosely chronological guide to human civilisation via stuff that we as a species have made, from primitive tools to world-famous pieces of art. The episodes are bang on 14-minutes each, but they’re impeccably well informed and moreover they add up to a genuinely symphonic whole that manages to capture something of the symphonic sweep of human civilisation.

The Memory Palace

3.  The Memory Palace

Nate DiMeo’s astoundingly long-running podcast - it’s been going since 2008! - is like history dispatched as a dreamy performance project. Appearing once or twice a month, each edition of ‘The Memory Palace’ sees DiMeo turn his drifting tones to what feels less like a history lesson than a memory of the distant past, dredged up and set loose to haunt your consciousness. The episodes have abstract names and DiMeo recommends you don’t find out the contents until you listen to them, and there’s even a randomiser button on the site to stress that that’s the ideal way to listen to them. Each episode is accompanied by an exquisitely chosen soundtrack, played in the background at a quietly atmospheric volume.

1619

4.  1619

This weighty but digestible podcast from the New York Times tackles the legacy of slavery in America and takes its name from the year that the first ship carrying enslaved Africans arrived in the nascent country. Hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones, ‘1619’ advances through six punchy episodes to examine the impact on American culture of its Black population on everything from music to healthcare. It’s essential stuff to shape your understanding of how the very fabric of contemporary American culture is inextricably bound up in slavery.

Uncivil

5.  Uncivil

If you want to find a podcast on any of your favourite global conflicts, just do an online search and fill your boots: there are plenty. But this award-winning 2017 podcast on the US Civil War is really worth a listen - it’s ‘the stories left out of the official history of the Civil War’, and that’s pretty much the remit, not so much an attempt to reframe or recast the war, as put together a fascinating compendium of largely unknown stories relating to the war, and largely untaught in history. A relentlessly interesting, unfailingly high-quality show.

Stuff the British Stole

6.  Stuff the British Stole

This excellent, funny, fiery Australian podcast presented by Marc Fennell is a guide to the history of the modern-day Commonwealth via exactly what the title says: stuff the British stole during imperial times. From the Parthenon Marbles to the Hottentot Venus, ‘Stuff the British Stole’ is alive to both the absurdity of imperial adventures and the burning injustice while also making a pretty good guide to some of the world’s key museum artefacts.

In Our Time

7.  In Our Time

Running weekly since 1998, the BBC’s heavyweight vehicle for presenter Melvyn Bragg isn’t quite as simple as a mere ‘history show’, although contained in its gargantuan vaults - coming up for 1000 episodes, all available to download - are plenty of more straightforward history-based editions. But in essence, ‘In Our Time’ is a reckoning with all the big ideas and philosophical concepts that have shaped humanity - if you want to understand the development of humanity, this is the (very long-running) show for you.

9/12

8.  9/12

It may have only had seven episodes, but this terrific podcast from Dan Taberski and Pineapple Street Studios is a poignant and penetrating look at how a grim, almost incomprehensible terrorist atrocity on September 11, 2001 went on to become the grimly indelible cultural entity that is ‘9/11’. Episodes tackle everything from the rise of Islamophobia in its wake, to conspiracy theories about the day, to the difficulty faced by humorists in knowing how to talk about it. They’re all dispatched with tremendous humanity and insight.

The Bowery Boys

9.  The Bowery Boys

Love it or loathe it, no city looms larger in the global popular imagination than New York. And ‘The Bowery Boys’ is its great podcast. Like NYC itself, the show has humble origins: hosts Greg Young and Tom Meyers did their first show from Meyers’s Bowery apartment: an unresearched story about nearby Canal Street. It’s become vastly more professional in subsequent years - and long moved out of the Bowery - and that’s really a very good thing because it’s morphed into a truly wonderful show that finds a new, fascinating, often delightfully obscure facet of New York’s endlessly alluring story each week.

30 for 30

10.  30 for 30

This podcast series is a spin-off from US television channel ESPN’s series of documentary films of the same name. But you don’t really need to know that! ‘30 for 30’ (the podcast) is an ongoing series of excellent sports documentaries. They’re relatively recent history, but history nonetheless, and always interesting. Where earlier series tended to focus on a different subject each week, later seasons have taken more of a joined-up approach: season five focussed on the downfall of LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, while season seven dealt with the controversial Romanian gymnastic coaches Béla and Márta Karolyi.

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

11.  Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

Definitely not one for everybody, US podcaster Carlin’s butchly philosophical, prodigiously long treatises on various cataclysmic world events - usually wars - are not something you just casually put on. Nonetheless, despite his aggressive dedication to blowing our minds, persuading us to rethink everything we thought we knew, he is a supreme storyteller and his shows - which often stretch to well over four hours in duration - are utterly gripping if you’re in the mood.

More Perfect

12.  More Perfect

Though it wrapped up back in 2018, the three seasons of this NPR podcast are essential listening if you have even the slightest interest in the US Supreme Court and its edicts, which have profoundly shaped the country’s history. Although a lot of legal and constitutional scholars are inevitably featured, ‘More Perfect’ is far from a dry affair, and its episodes run the gamut from interesting individual cases to an explanation of how the Supreme Court became so damn supreme to a history of mansplaining (that is to say, unauthorised interruptions) in the court.

You’re Wrong About

13.  You’re Wrong About

Blurring the line between history and pop culture, journalist Sarah Marshall’s bimonthly-ish podcast is devoted to explaining why we are indeed wrong about things from the past - a broad remit that runs from distant historical figures like Catherine the Great to more recent phenomena like cancel culture or Tom Cruise’s infamous sofa interview. It’s all good fun, and despite the slightly didactic promise of the premise, you’ll learn plenty even if you had no strong opinion on the subject in the first place.

Dan Snow’s History Hit

14.  Dan Snow’s History Hit

Brit historian Snow’s daily podcast is a sort of free-flowing greatest hits of history, bounding cheerily from one major event to the next as Snow’s whims take him: in a very literal sense he’s the sort of guy who will do a show about the legacy of the Mongolian empire one day, and another about the real Peaky Blinders the next. While the 20-ish minute episodes inevitably don’t always constitute the absolute last word on their subject, Snow is always engaging, and the slightly fly by the seat of the pants nature of the project means that he can respond with agility to world events - eg lots of stuff on Russia and Ukraine after the former invaded the latter.

You’re Dead to Me

15.  You’re Dead to Me

Greg Jenner’s BBC podcast ‘for those who don’t like history… and those that do’ is a hoot, a sly alternative sideways rummage through the nooks and crannies of history with a firm emphasis on the fun and the interesting. Broadly speaking it is divided into episodes focused on historical figures with outrageously colourful lives, and asking more niche questions of history – such as who invented high heels and how did they become popular? Whatever form an episode takes, it’s always good fun.

The 11 Best History Podcasts

The Best History Podcasts 2023

T he first podcast is considered by many to be Doug Kaye’s IT Conversations , which ran from 2003 to 2012. A year after the show’s inception, journalist Ben Hammersley wrote for The Guardian about this new phenomenon , ultimately giving the medium its name: “But what to call it? Audioblogging? Podcasting? GuerillaMedia?” We’re happy to say the publication you’re reading now isn’t called the Audioblogging Review .

That’s some podcast history, but alas… you’re here for history podcasts. And considering the genre is filled with quality shows, the question to ask is what makes a history podcast stand out? My answer is that every show on this list makes excellent editorial calls, regardless of topic or format. Some illuminate previously overshadowed periods of history, while others propose new ideas around our most infamous historical events. No matter its methodology, each of these history podcasts rewards listeners with rich insights into our past delivered at a pleasant pace.

The Rest is History

How many times a day do you think about the Roman Empire? For the hosts of The Rest is History , the number might be hard to quantify. And it doesn’t end there. Every empire in history is up for consideration on this British podcast, which is an archetype of the genre. It covers various events in history through a mini-series format, allowing hosts historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook to untangle the threads with care, analysis, and a touch of light-hearted commentary. The show has built a loyal following over the years through consistency. You have to admire these hosts for their productivity. Each forty-minute episode digests a vast amount of information, condensing it into knowledge that is entertaining and accessible. It’s little wonder that the show is the go-to history podcast for so many.

Revolutions

Revolutions hardly needs an explainer. It’s a podcast that dives into moments in history when an oppressed population overthrew their ruling class. For a show all about turmoil, uprisings, and disaffection, writer and host Mike Duncan delivers these complicated historical episodes with all the enthusiasm of your neighbor describing their new driveway paving. But it works. After ten seasons and over 100 episodes, Revolutions remains worth listening to because it isn’t brash or reductive. In fact, it might appeal precisely because it diverges from the reactionary pace of today’s news cycle. This show rewards fans with steady pacing, nuance, and attention to detail, appealing to anyone who enjoys Stephen West’s podcast Philosophize This! . Even if you don’t have a favorite philosopher, Revolutions might just leave you with a favorite political uprising.

Dan Snow’s History Hit

British historian Dan Snow has been making television and radio programs about history for over two decades. His latest project, Dan Snow’s Hist o ry Hit , is a masterclass in making history accessible to the public. The podcast manages to be both topical and historical, which makes you wonder whether Snow is trying to have his cake and eat it too. But the format has proven successful, thanks to quick turnarounds and a backlog of pre-recorded episodes. How else would he put out a show about Queen Elizabeth II on the same day she died? Bravo, Dan.

Snow isn’t quite Lucy Worsley — but then, who is? — yet he remains a popular mainstay of the history broadcasting scene. Yes, there’s a scene. History Hit has endured in this competitive market since 2015 because it is both well-researched and digestible. With episodes erring on the shorter side, around 20 minutes, the show is ideal for a coffee break or while cooking dinner. Just make sure you avoid all the episodes on plague while you carve the chicken.

When Blowback releases a new season, we clear our playlist and listen. If you’ve heard previous seasons of the show, our reasons should be obvious. But we’ll explain anyway. Blowback covers contemporary political history, describing itself as “a podcast about the American Empire”. The latest season of the show is about Afghanistan, namely America’s involvement in the country both before and after 9/11. Even from a distance, hearing the sounds of those attacks in the first episode of season four remains a chilling experience. Blowback evokes similar feelings to watching The West Wing and All The President’s Men . Entertaining, absorbing — yet unnerving.

Whether you consider it a war, invasion, or intervention, the consequences of Western activity in Afghanistan were never more apparent than during the evacuation of Kabul by foreign citizens in 2021. This might be where many of us consider the story to end. But Blowback doesn’t look at this event in isolation. Context is key, especially in geopolitics — and Blowback has applied this lens to each of their subjects, from the Korean War to Iraq. We consider this show unmissable.

You Must Remember This

Named one of our  favorite podcasts of 2018 , You Must Remember This takes listeners through the debauchery, scandal, and forgotten stories of Old Hollywood. For more than 200 episodes, host Karina Longworth has illuminated details of Hollywood lore that, invariably, are not exactly how we remember them.

Films like Babylon and Hail, Caesar! have made it clear that Hollywood is just as interested in its myths and scandals as we are. As an author, as well as a film critic, Longworth knowledge lends You Must Remember This even more weight. In his recent round-up of the best film podcasts , Matt Seaton described the show as a series of “podcast-essays” that “unfold like stories.” The result? A meticulously researched dive into Hollywood legends of the sort that endure with each passing generation.

In Our Time

Forget King Charles. Melvyn Bragg is the true patriarch of the British nation. Don’t believe me? Bragg has been at the helm of In Our Time since 1998, with over 900 episodes to date. Let the record show that Charles III has been in his post for a fraction of that time, with much less deference given to him. In Our Time is a British radio show and podcast presented by Bragg and recorded live for BBC Radio 4. It’s an academic roundtable that explores rich and diverse topics, from the Knights Templar to the Dead Sea Scrolls ; think of a niche topic and they’ve likely covered it.

If we can’t convince you of the delights of listening to three academics arguing about the real meaning of a palimpsest dating back to 1543, then perhaps our claim that this podcast could comfortably get you through an undergraduate degree might persuade you. Long live the reign of Bragg.

Throughline

What would a list of educational podcasts be without a show from NPR? Enter Throughline . Put simply, this is a history podcast about often marginalized and frequently debated events in history, casting a critical lens on topics from the prosaic to the provocative.

When Podcast Review spoke with the hosts of Throughline , Rund Abdelfatah and Ramtin Arablouei, we learned that the show has been accused of being both too political and apolitical. But they take this as a compliment. “If we’re getting it from both sides, I think we did a good job.” Looking back, it’s easy to see why this podcast has been successful. Whether discussing monopoly or the modern white power movement, Abdelfatah and Arablouei never swerve.

Mission History

Since QCODE began expanding its portfolio beyond star-studded fiction podcasts, they’ve produced some gems in the non-fiction category. Mission History is only in its first season, but it has already become a mainstay of our rotation. Focusing on military history, the show has flavors of Ken Burns in both tone and attention to detail. Mission History examines one conflict in history at a time, promising future seasons on the Trojan War and Viking Raids. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The show launched with a polished analysis of the American Revolutionary War that accounts for both sides of the divide. In an over-saturated genre, it can be tricky for a new history podcast to get noticed. But Mission History has a vision for its content, one that it has elegantly delivered.

We called 1619 one of the best podcasts of 2019 . Returning to the show a few years later, it’s hard to miss all the reasons why it had such an impact. The title refers to August 20, 1619, the day a ship carrying enslaved Africans landed on the shores of Virginia. Over 400 years later, The New York Times ’s 1619 Project offers an ambitious examination of slavery in the United States. This podcast’s first episode begins with host Nikole Hannah-Jones standing in New England, looking back across the Atlantic towards Africa. 1619 is an intimately narrated and rigorously researched telling of a history that, even now, is glossed over.

Noble Blood

Author Dana Schwartz is known for her historical romance novels set in Edinburgh, Scotland. Given her interest in the past, it’s not surprising she also hosts a history podcast called Noble Blood. The show is a weekly affair that delves into the lives of compelling royals both famous and obscure. In these stories, the stakes are high. Mistakes often mean death or war — and Schwartz does an excellent job of dissecting these tales. And while the analysis can be simplistic, the show will appeal to those who seek storytelling, rather than rigorous academia. Every infamous royal is given new life through Schwartz’s clear talent at spinning a good yarn. Could we lose the background music? Absolutely. But overall, Noble Blood has a promising format that will appeal to younger listeners.

Hardcore History

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History is probably the most infamous history podcast on this list. It’s certainly the most acquired taste. That hasn’t stopped it from gaining a cult following for its richly layered storytelling and the striking artwork that accompanies it.

True to its name, Hardcore History is not for dabblers. Each episode stretches for hours — we’re talking the best part of five — and Carlin uses that time to paint an intriguing, highly contextualized portrait of some of the darker periods of world history. Though Carlin insists he is a “fan of history, not a historian,” he takes complicated events and makes them feel real through clever discussion, often flipping ideas on their head and asking listeners to examine concepts from multiple angles. Though Carlin’s deference for historical nuance often sacrifices sensitivity around language, the show remains a staple of the genre.

the best history podcasts

They say those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it—or maybe they're just missing out on some really great stories. These 24 history podcasts take a look at the weird, complex, and fascinating people and events that have shaped our world in ways both big and small.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

hardcore history podcast, best history podcasts

iTunes Spotify

Dan Carlin makes most people's deep dives look shallow. Discursive, digressive, both grand and granular, Carlin has a commanding grasp of history's nuances and how events and figures big and small fit together to create the world we inhabit today.

Unlike some of the other podcasts on this list, Hardcore History doesn't really lean on music, or sound effects, or historical soundbites; most of Carlin's multi-hour-long episodes are just him, alone, telling you what happened, and what people remember, and what it might all mean. It's like sitting in on a lecture by a particularly sharp (and indefatigable) history professor.

Consider starting with episode 50, "Blueprint for Armageddon I"—the first installment of Carlin's excellent WWI arc, which is loosely arranged around Gavrilo Princip, who helped assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand. It also has the advantage of being, at three hours and seven minutes, the shortest episode available. You know, to just dip your toe in.

You Must Remember This

you must remember this podcast title card, best history podcasts

This podcast covers old Hollywood's scandalous, sometimes gruesome history, ranging from horrific events like the Manson family murders to the release of salacious books like Hollywood Babylon .

slow burn podcast logo, best history podcasts

Hosted by Slate journalist Leon Neyfakh, each season of Slow Burn zooms in on a period of presidential crisis, from the Watergate scandal and impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon, to the Monica Lewinsky affair and Clinton's impeachment.

This is well-trod ground, but Neyfakh and his team have secured a trove of historical materials—recordings, news clippings, and some original interviews—that help make it fresh. Plus, if all you really remember about Watergate is the bullet points from high school history, the refresher is worthwhile.

As Neyfakh notes on the show page, "People who lived through Watergate had no idea what was going to happen from one day to the next, or how it was all going to end. I recognize that feeling."

These days, he's not the only one.

history podcasts backstory podcast title card

Did you know the real-life albino whale who inspired Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick was named…Mocha Dick? The four historians who host BackStory do, and they're more than happy to tell you about it. (See: "Thar She Blows: The History of Whales and America." If that's not enough cetacean content for you, thar is also "Thar She Blows Again.")

Many of the episodes are esoteric—the history of the number 13 in America, the cultural history of UFOs —but they also tackle weightier topics like incarceration , opioid addiction, and immigration . Impeccably researched and reasonably paced (usually 30 minutes to an hour long), the weekly episodes offer nuanced primers on some of the most interesting aspects of American history.

history podcasts uncivil podcast title card

Gimlet's Civil War podcast, Uncivil , explores the lesser-known stories that have "been left out of the official history" of one of our nation's darkest eras.

Presidential

best history podcasts presidential podcast title card

From The Washington Post , a consideration of each U.S. president (in order) and their defining characteristics. Each episode takes presidents in their own context—but host Lillian Cunningham and her guests, many of them veteran Post journalists themselves, also draw connections to today.

You can of course listen in order, from Washington all the way up through Trump; but we recommend starting with episode (and president) #6, John Quincy Adams , whose successes as an idealistic and uncompromising congressman and as Secretary of State decidedly did not translate into a successful presidency.

Black History Year

Start with season three, episode four ("Six Who Sat"), a look at two of the first women who participated in official marathons like the Boston and New York races, events that female runners had traditionally been barred from. Duncan cuts his dispatches to a more commute-friendly 45 minutes or so, though. If you've ever wondered what it's like to live in a society going through a real crisis —or how these extremely volatile episodes rearranged societies on a global and social order—this is the pod for you.

Updated February 8, 2023 /

Posted january 17, 2019, / resonate recordings.

Life is happening right in front of our eyes. We wake up, eat, work, sleep, repeat. And while the daily grind of life can feel dizzying sometimes (and downright exhausting, right?)…

We’re all looking for ways to add in a little spice to our life and enjoy the time we have on this spinning green globe. One great way of disconnecting, getting the juices flowing and broadening our horizons is by reading, watching and listening to the things that inspire us. For some of us, that means dedicating ourselves and our time to the here and now.

But sometimes that means digging in and learning about things have already happened. While many of us may not choose to classify ourselves as “history buffs” (though there are some who would and you know who you are…), the content we consume and the trends in our society show that we love history. It should be no wonder really since any new biographical movie is likely to draw in millions of viewers. And the latest season of the historical period drama will have avid fans hanging on in suspense to see how the story unfolds.

Truth be told, our culture loves stories and loves to hear the details, facts and anecdotes about the stuff that has already happened…and (often times) to people who have already died. But our identifiable love for history aside, another surging trend today is the popularity of podcasting. Podcasting has become a significantly favored way for people to consume media in today’s current tech age. And it shows no signs of stopping. So. If you like history and you like podcasts, you’ve come to the right place. This post is a current list of today’s most popular history podcasts being curated just for your listening pleasure. But  history podcasts , like all podcasts, come in a broad range of flavors, styles and topics to ensure everybody will have something to love. So sift through, see what strikes you and settle in to see what all the hype is about!

Have you ever stopped to think about all the facts and details about history we’ve accumulated in our lifetime? It’s mind-boggling. But how can we know these things really happened? How can we verify the accuracy of them? I mean, we weren’t there, right? If this cognitive spiral sounds familiar, then  Our Fake History  is the podcast for you. “Our Fake History is an award-winning podcast about myths people think are history and history that might be hidden in myths. Have you ever heard that old story about how Napoleon shot the nose off the Sphinx, or that Shakespeare was an illiterate fraud, or that Queen Elizabeth was actually a man? This show explores those tall-tales and tries to figure out what’s fact, what’s fiction, and what is such a good story it simply must be told. The podcast combines storytelling, humor, and historical detective work to create a show that is good for both history buffs and anyone who loves a good story.

The podcast is produced in Toronto, Canada, by Sebastian Major with help from his wife Beth Lorimer. Sebastian is a teacher, musician, and storyteller who is passionate about all things weird and wonderful from the past.” If you’re looking for the real answers behind some of history’s most famous (or infamous) people and events, then look no further.

Best Episodes of Our Fake History:

  • Was Queen Elizabeth Actually A Man?
  • Did Nero Really Fiddle As Rome Burned?
  • Was There A Real Atlantis? ,  Who Was The Real Braveheart?
  • How Do You Explain The First Crusades?

You’ll be sure to keep coming back for a regular dose. Mind. Blown.

2. Letters From War

The art of letter writing is, for all intents and purposes, a bygone concept now in 2019. Who has time for pens and paper?! With options like email and texting at our disposal, it just makes life more convenient, albeit at the expense of sacrificing something tangible and eternal like a handwritten, thoughtful letter. There’s no doubt that a handwritten letter has a rich meaning and is in many ways, a large part of history. This is the main emphasis behind the history-inspired podcast  Letters from War.

Interested? “Hundreds of letters, written between brothers fighting in the Pacific during World War II. Almost one a day, for every day of the war. The letters detail everything from the monotony of training, to the struggles of the Great Depression back home, to the prospects for the Chicago Cubs, and ultimately the horrors of some of the most intense and significant battles of the war in the Pacific. In this podcast, you’ll hear the story of these brothers — the Eyde brothers — and of World War II, as told through their letters, in their own words.”

This podcast offers 8 excellent episodes and is an enthralling look into the events these brothers endured during their time at war through the use of voice actors and helps the listener feel the power of our history as shared in these letters. Letters from War is a product of  The Washington Post.  Be sure to check out the series on  Apple Podcasts ,  Google Podcasts  or whatever directory you listen to podcasts on.

3. Myths and Legends

best historical biography podcasts

Even as kids were drawn to the world of fantasy,  myth and legends . We’re mesmerized by the tales of battles, knights, bandits, dragons, heroes, kings and kingdoms. There’s just something about myths and legends that keeps us coming back for more. But what if there is more to these beloved stories than just adventure and true love? Thankfully, there’s the Myths and Legends podcast. “Ever wonder about the original stories behind King Arthur and his legendary knights, Robin Hood, or Aladdin? Did you know that fairy tales weren’t originally for children and are way more bizarre, ridiculous, and interesting than you ever thought possible? Maybe you’ve heard of characters like Thor, Odin, and Hercules from modern movies- stories stretching back centuries. Well, the originals that inspired the adaptations are even better. This show brings you folklore that has shaped our world. Some are incredibly popular stories you think you know, but with surprising origins. Others are stories that might be new to you but are definitely worth a listen. These are stories of magic, kings, Vikings, dragons, knights, princesses, and wizards from a time when the world beyond the map was a dangerous, wonderful, and terrifying place.“ This podcast dives deep into the history behind the storylines and characters we are familiar with but many times, know little about. The podcast kicked off in 2015 and offers insight into stories like the  Knights of the Round Table ,  Aladdin ,  Vikings ,  King Arthur ,  Dragons  among many, many more. This is one podcast you do not want to miss out on!

5. The Way I Heard It

We all love a good story, right? That’s part of the reason we love learning about the past so much. There are just so many great stories! This next podcast offers up incredibly engaging stories from the past in a very unique way. In addition to having a great concept and engaging content,  The Way I Heard It  is hosted by none other than Mike Rowe (what’s not to love?!). “All good stories have a twist, and all great storytellers are just a little twisted. Join me for a different take on the people and events that you thought you knew, from pop culture to politics, Hollywood to history… The Way I Heard It is a series of short mysteries for the curious mind with a short attention span. DISCLAIMER: Each episode of The Way I Heard It is a true story about a real person, place, or thing. With respect to the facts, I try to be as accurate as possible. However, the Internet is full of conflicting accounts, and it’s entirely possible you might hear me say something about a person or an event that contradicts something you heard or read elsewhere. If so, feel free to bring any discrepancy to my attention. Just remember – I’m not wrong. It’s just the way I heard it…”

6. Revisionist History

Best History Podcasts

There are podcasts about history and then there’s  Revisionist History  with author and all-around engaging host,  Malcolm Gladwell . Truth be told, in many ways, this podcast is in a league of its own. Why, you ask? “Revisionist History is Malcolm Gladwell’s journey through the overlooked and the misunderstood. Every episode re-examines something from the past—an event, a person, an idea, even a song—and asks whether we got it right the first time. From Pushkin Industries. Because sometimes the past deserves a second chance.”

Malcolm Gladwell is known as an author of five New York Times bestsellers — The Tipping Point,  Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and David and Goliath. He has been named one of the 100 most influential people by TIME magazine and one of the Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers.” So what’s the format? “Each week for 10 weeks, Revisionist History will go back and reinterpret something from the past: an event, a person, an idea. Something overlooked. Something misunderstood.”

Food52’s Burnt Toast podcast chases those stories to give listeners the perfect pieces of snackable dinner-party fodder—all inside of a commute’s time.

In each episode, host Michael Harlan Turkell explores a different aspect of food culture and community, highlighting the often-surprising past informing what we eat every day, and meeting some of the people shaping food’s present and future.” The reality is, food is such a large part of our lives and there’s something to be said about its rich and vibrant history-we just don’t often give it a second thought. 8. History With Mark Bielski

Truth be told, many history-lovers and historians alike will gravitate towards one time period or one historical event, and look to unpack it as much as possible. As such, the dates, the cities, the people become second nature to them.  Many Americans dedicate their time and attention to our nation’s domestic historical events like The Civil War and World War II. If that’s your forte, then this is a podcast you simply can’t pass up.  History with Mark Bielski  is a podcast hosted by respected historian, author, and the Director at Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours (not to mention the podcast’s namesake),  Mark Bielksi.

In this podcast you can, “Tune in to hear Mark Bielski discuss history from ancient to modern times with experts in their fields of study, with special attention to the Civil War and WWII. We leave the textbooks behind and delve into the characters, backstories and often the intrigues that drove events throughout history.” Drawing on his personal expertise as well as those of his guests who are respected leaders in their respective areas, the podcast offers a fascinating look into some of the most infamous events in American history.

9. Comic Book Historians

The saying holds true that variety is the spice of life. The reality is, not everyone will fit the mold of “let me learn more about that obscure event that happened a long time ago”. Sometimes we’re looking for something more modern. And more engaging. Is that you? Well for a fresh take on the historical…and adventurous, consider looking into the Comic Book Historians podcast.

Here’s the scoop. “Alex Grand, Bill Field and Jim Thompson start off a comic book history discussion between fans, historians and scholars in determining what happened and when in comics, from strips and pulps to the platinum age comic book, through golden, silver, bronze and then toward modern. All genres are fair game here including Westerns, Comedy, Crime, Superheroes, Westerns, Horror, and Newspaper Strips. Causality and placement in the psychosocial spectrum is routinely discussed.”

The content offered in the podcast is engaging and fascinating and will draw you back with continually new content. Many of the podcast’s topics are covered in depth over multiple episodes so I suggest starting with the content listed below.

10. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

A known fan favorite podcast in the  history  category is  Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History . “He’s been called a lot of things, but no one says that Dan Carlin is boring. His two long-running podcasts are among the most popular in the world. Part storyteller, part analyst, Carlin has mastered the art of looking at subjects from multiple angles and dissecting and thinking about them in original ways.” So what’s it all about? “In “Hardcore History” journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his “Martian”, unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past.

Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn’t academic history (and Carlin isn’t a historian) but the podcast’s unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists have entertained millions of listeners.”

The approach of the podcast is engaging and captivating which no doubt explains its tremendous popularity. Episodes are typically released in multi-episode series.

Best Episode Series of Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History:

  • The Celtic Holocaust
  • Blueprint for Armageddon
  • King of Kings  series

Be sure to check out this podcast to see what all the excitement is about!

The 10 best history podcasts to enrich your understanding of the past

Table of contents.

We all know that history is the backbone that holds the flesh of today’s world. But let’s be honest, the traditional classroom setting isn’t always the most exciting place to dive into the past. That’s where the best history podcasts come in handy. Yes, you heard that right—podcasts! These digital talk shows have revolutionized the way we consume information, making topics like American history, the French Revolution, and even historical figures like Abraham Lincoln accessible to everyone, including history buffs and students between 8th and 12th grades.

What makes a history podcast “the best”?

So, what makes a history podcast one of the best ? Well, it’s not just about stringing together a bunch of dates and names. It’s far more intricate than that.

Authenticity and research

Imagine tuning into a podcast about the Roman Empire, only to find out that the information is as authentic as a Hollywood film. Yikes! A top-notch history podcast needs to have its facts straight. Deep research and historical authenticity are key. In-depth analysis often makes the difference between a forgettable podcast and one that you’ll recommend to every history buff you know.

Storytelling and narrative structure

History is not just a collection of dates and places; it’s a series of stories. And who doesn’t love a good story? If a podcast can weave historical events into a compelling narrative, then you’ve got something worth listening to. Award-winning podcasts often have this storytelling factor nailed down.

Production value

Ever tried listening to a podcast with poor audio quality? It’s about as fun as reading a history book with half the pages missing. Good production value, complete with clear audio and sometimes even mood-setting background music, is essential for a podcast to be considered one of the best.

Audience engagement and community

Some of the best history podcasts have communities where you can engage in rich discussions, debate theories, and even offer suggestions for future topics. Whether it’s a vibrant subreddit or an active Facebook group, audience engagement is a key indicator of a podcast’s quality and impact.

The wide spectrum of history podcasts

Before we dive into our curated list of the 10 best history podcasts , it’s crucial to recognize the immense diversity of options available in this genre. History podcasts aren’t a monolith; they’re a vibrant tapestry, each thread woven with a unique narrative style, focus, and approach to dissecting the past.

Some podcasts take a laser-focused approach, dissecting a particular time period or series of events like the French Revolution or the American Civil War. Others, like NPR’s Throughline or Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History, prefer a thematic approach, where each episode revolves around a central idea or question that ties together seemingly disparate events.

For the true crime aficionados, there are podcasts that get into crimes of the past, offering both historical context and a narrative arc filled with suspense and intrigue. Some platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify have even categorized history podcasts under different sub-genres, making it even easier for you to pick one that fits your particular taste.

There’s literally something for everyone—whether you’re an eighth-grader trying to supplement your classroom learning or a history buff looking for a deep dive into lesser-known events.

The 10 best history podcasts

All set to journey through the corridors of time? Make sure your earbuds are plugged in, your favorite cozy chair is ready, and your sense of wonder is fully charged. We’re about to embark on an audio odyssey that will enrich your understanding of the past, challenge your perspectives, and above all, entertain you in the most enlightening way possible. So without further ado, here are the 10 best history podcasts that you absolutely must check out.

1. Hardcore History by Dan Carlin

First up is the juggernaut of history podcasts, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. When we say this podcast isn’t your run-of-the-mill history lesson, we mean it. Think of it as the IMAX of auditory history experiences. With episodes often stretching beyond the six-hour mark, it might seem intimidating at first. But don’t let the episode length deter you. Dan Carlin’s spellbinding storytelling abilities, combined with in-depth research, turn this podcast into an immersive experience.

His explorations range from the conquests of Genghis Khan to the trench warfare of World War I, touching on everything from historical figures to societal systems. The podcast offers an intellectual deep dive into human history, enriching your understanding of monumental events and complex characters. It’s like a Netflix binge-watch, but for your brain.

2. You Must Remember This

For those enamored by the glittering allure of Hollywood’s golden years, You Must Remember This is the go-to podcast. Hosted by film critic Karina Longworth, this podcast dissects the scandals, careers, and everyday lives of Hollywood’s biggest names from yesteryears. Don’t expect a dry, encyclopedic recounting of events.

Longworth masterfully weaves storytelling with historical investigation, turning each episode into a thrilling cinematic experience. You’ll discover behind-the-scenes secrets and real-life dramas that put even today’s juiciest tabloid stories to shame. Imagine uncovering tales of real-life Hollywood espionage during the Cold War or understanding the complex relationship between stardom and politics in an era gone by. It’s an engaging lens into a part of American history that has shaped modern pop culture in ways we often overlook.

3. History Extra

Think of BBC’s History Extra as the New York Times of the history podcast world. This highly respected podcast brings you stories from all corners of the globe, exploring everything from the intricacies of British monarchy to the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War. Not to be mistaken as just another British history podcast, History Extra boasts a well-rounded curriculum of episodes, featuring expert interviews, deep dives, and thoroughly researched debates.

Hosted by historians from the BBC History Magazine, it offers high-quality, well-researched discussions that make even the most complex topics easily digestible. Whether you’re intrigued by the tactical genius of Winston Churchill or the unsolved mysteries of ancient civilizations, this podcast adds a layer of polish and profundity to your understanding of history.

4. The British History Podcast

At first glance, the name says it all: The British History Podcast. However, this isn’t just an audio compilation of English kings and battles fought on British soil. It’s much more nuanced. Host Jamie Jeffers takes listeners on a comprehensive journey through Britain’s past, from its geological formation to modern-day politics.

His narrative is not limited to just the ruling class; it dives into the experiences of common people as well—farmers, soldiers, and poets who made Britain what it is today. For anyone infatuated with English history, from its medieval folklore to its imperial endeavors, this podcast is a trove of meticulously detailed episodes, each one a mini-time capsule into Britain’s rich past.

5. Stuff You Missed in History Class

If you’ve ever felt that your history textbooks seemed a bit sanitized or overly focused on the same set of facts, then Stuff You Missed in History Class is your antidote. Hosted by Holly Frey and Tracy, this engaging podcast takes a different route, focusing on the ‘footnotes’ of history.

From stories about little-known women warriors who fought bravely but barely got a paragraph in standard texts, to obscure events that had a significant impact but are seldom discussed, this podcast fills in the gaps. It not only addresses American history but also global events, figures, and phenomena that are often overlooked. It’s the perfect supplementary listen for students and history buffs looking to round out their knowledge.

6. The History of Rome

When we say Mike Duncan’s The History of Rome is a comprehensive guide, we’re not kidding. This isn’t just another surface-level exploration of gladiators, emperors, and ancient Roman architecture. Duncan meticulously charts the course of Roman history, covering its inception, rise, and eventual fall.

Each episode gets into the reigns of different emperors, the Roman Senate’s political intricacies, military strategies, and much more. If Julius Caesar were alive today, he’d probably subscribe to this podcast. And who knows? He might just find some new insights into his own life and times, such is the level of detail in Duncan’s narrative.

7. The History of England

The History of England shouldn’t be mistaken for the aforementioned British History Podcast, although both cover similar grounds. This podcast, however, has its own unique flavor and approach. It scrutinizes English history, including not only its most famous rulers and events but also its lesser-known stories.

Whether it’s the complex dynamics of the Tudor court or the socio-political landscape of the Anglo-Saxon era, this podcast takes you on a journey through the annals of England’s past. It’s a must-listen for those who have a particular affinity for English history and enjoy delving into the details that often go unnoticed in mainstream discussions.

8. The History Chicks

The History Chicks is not your average history podcast; it focuses solely on the women who have made an indelible impact on history but have been largely ignored in mainstream narratives. Hosted by Beckett Graham and Susan Vollenweider, this podcast shines a spotlight on the lives of women who broke barriers and shattered ceilings.

From the enigmatic allure of Cleopatra to the artistic genius of Frida Kahlo, each episode dives into the challenges, triumphs, and legacies of women who have paved the way for future generations. Whether you’re a feminist, a history enthusiast, or both, The History Chicks is a refreshing divergence from traditional male-centric history podcasts.

9. The Dollop

Imagine combining the intricacies of historical events with stand-up comedy, and you get The Dollop. This podcast is a one-of-a-kind experience, turning American history into an engaging, laugh-out-loud narrative. Hosted by comedians Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds, the podcast covers everything from oddball inventors to political blunders, all told with a light-hearted tone and a knack for finding humor in the most unlikely places.

While its primary focus is on American history, don’t be surprised to find episodes that span continents, diving into some of the most bizarre and funny events from around the globe. It’s as if your history teacher suddenly developed an impeccable sense of humor.

10. The History of Byzantium

For those who find themselves utterly captivated by Roman history and are looking for a ‘sequel,’ The History of Byzantium picks up right where Mike Duncan’s History of Rome leaves off. Focusing on the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, this podcast serves as the perfect next chapter for those who can’t get enough of the Roman world.

Just like its predecessor, The History of Byzantium dives into the sociopolitical structures, religious influences, and military campaigns that shaped this ancient empire. It’s an excellent resource for those hungry to explore the less covered but equally fascinating corridors of Roman history.

Honorable mentions

Our list would be incomplete without mentioning other remarkable podcasts like In Our Time hosted by Melvyn Bragg, Dan Snow’s History Hit, or NPR’s Throughline. If you’re a fan of true crime mixed with history, you might enjoy Slate’s Slow Burn. For more American stories, try American History Tellers by Wondery. Or, if you like your history served in bite-sized portions, give The Memory Palace by Nate DiMeo a listen. Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History and Aaron Mahnke’s Lore are also fantastic podcasts that often dip into historical events.

How to choose the best history podcast for you

Not all history podcasts are created equal, and what may be the best podcast for one person might not be for another. So how do you decide which one to listen to?

First, identify your interests. Are you into world history or more inclined towards a specific region like America or Britain? Are you looking for quick minute episodes or are you ready for a deep dive?

Next, check out the first episode or read listener reviews on platforms like Apple Podcasts or Spotify. This can give you a taste of what to expect.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to mix it up. Give different genres a try. You might start with Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History and find yourself captivated by the Cold War episodes of BBC’s History Extra or the storytelling in The History Chicks.

Welcome to 20 Minute History, where every episode brings you the engaging story of an unknown or misunderstood historical concept, broadening your horizons and correcting the record on some popular misconceptions. Our show is carefully researched, taking into consideration as many different sources and perspectives as possible, so you can trust that we’re getting the information right. But we also know that most folks don't have a lot of time on their hands, which is why each of our lessons is over in twenty minutes or less. And most importantly, we recognize that being well-informed takes more than just memorizing the names, dates, and places, which is why we always strive for our narratives to include a deeper analysis. After all, knowing what happened on a particular date means almost nothing without a comprehension of why it matters to begin with. We may be just one small, independently-run podcast...but we genuinely believe that the more we do to widen our collective awareness of the past, the better our chances of repairing our communities and narrowing the divide in this country. If you are someone who shares these concerns, or if you’re simply a history fanatic, we humbly ask you to tune in.

NFL Draft prospect Cooper DeJean believes he can take the greatest scorer in NCAA history.

DeJean, a former Iowa defensive back who is projected by some to be a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, boldly claimed he would beat fellow Hawkeye and the No.1 pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft , Caitlin Clark, in a game of one-on-one.

“I wouldn’t say it’s really weird but a lot of teams have asked me if I could beat Caitlin Clark one-on-one, just being from Iowa. I said I think I can,” DeJean, 21, told Yahoo Sports . “She’d probably score a few buckets on me but I think I could pull it off.”

While perhaps this seems like brash confidence from a future NFLer, DeJean actually has some legit basketball chops from his prep days.

DeJean, an Odebolta, Iowa, native, lettered three years in basketball while attending OABCIG High School in Ida Grove, Iowa, according to his Iowa profile .

He scored 1,832 career points, which put him 45 points ahead of Warriors forward and former North Carolina first-round pick Harrison Barnes in the state’s record books .

Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson is actually ahead of DeJean by 55 points.

Cooper DeJean believes he would beat Caitlin Clark one-on-one.

The Athletic’s 2021 profile stated that basketball was DeJean’s favorite sport and he scored the third-most points in the state his senior year.

“We always thought he would play college basketball,” DeJean’s mother, Katie, told The Athletic. “I mean, he loves all the sports, but that just kind of took to him.”

DeJean’s athleticism also shined, as he could dunk despite being just 6-foot-1, as seen in a clip he tweeted in January 2021 .

“Good size, rocked-up guy,” Iowa recruiting director Tyler Barnes told The Athletic. “I think he had four or five dunks in that game, one of which he dunked over two guys. One was about 6-5. To see a quiet kid like that, once he jumped on the basketball court, his switch flipped. To see him operate the way he did, I was texting everybody on staff, ‘This kid is an absolute no-brainer.’”

😈 pt.2 pic.twitter.com/zKj9WSD4v0 — Cooper DeJean (@cdejean23) January 20, 2021

That basketball excellence factored into why Iowa recruited him.

“We’re looking for guys that are leaders, good football players, but leaders,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said, according to The Athletic. “Think about Cooper DeJean. He probably sparked our interest through basketball prowess. The football part took care of itself.”

Cooper DeJean dunking in a preps game.

For all his gaudy high school stats, though, they pale in comparison to Clark’s historic numbers at Iowa , where she cemented herself as the greatest scorer in both men’s and women’s history.

Shortly after this month’s national championship game, when the Hawkeyes fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 87-75, Clark was selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in this year’s WNBA draft.

Caitlin Clark set the NCAA scoring record.

That teams asked DeJean about whether he would win a hypothetical one-on-one game may seem odd but teams are known to ask curious questions to prospects.

The Post’s Steve Serby does not have DeJean being selected in the first round in his mock draft, but Fox’s Peter Schrager and NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah both have DeJean going to the Packers at No. 25.
