The faculty care about us and the other students do as well, but neither the Board of Trustees nor the President nor the Provost (now acting President) actually care about this particular group of students. They’d honestly rather A&S disappear to make way for “industry jobs”. If your goal is to pursue Psychology, then TU is a solid option. Other degrees housed under A&S? Master's Student: My experience in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy with LatinX Communities at Pepperdine University (also known as the Aliento Program) is something I have not experienced in the education system. That means enjoyable learning and not ignorant learning, where everything is about tests, grades, and even memorization. My professors here deeply care about me and my community and they show it. They are so skilled at what they do and made me realize and reflect on things that I did not think about before. They tell us that this program is about supporting one another and not about competition. I also feel the sense of community in the program where everyone is close to one another compared to other programs where students are distant from each other. I love this program because it feels like home, it feels like a family away from my biological family. A Ph.D. in clinical psychology opens the door to a variety of career opportunities in a rewarding field. Graduates of these programs make theoretical and hands-on contributions in research positions, professorships, and clinical practice in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Through experience-based practicum studies, internships, and research-heavy dissertation work, clinical psychology Ph.D. programs prepare students to become leaders in their chosen careers. Read on to learn more about Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology.

Earning a Ph.D. vs. a PsyD

To become a psychologist, prospective students must earn one of two doctoral degrees in psychology . The choice between a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and a Psy.D. in clinical psychology largely depends on the individual's ultimate career goals.

Clinical psychology Ph.D. programs train students to conduct and present psychological research. Graduates can choose from a wide range of career options, including clinical practice and patient care, teaching, research, and medical center practice. Ph.D. admissions are competitive, and schools admit only a fraction of the applications they receive.

Graduates with a Psy.D. in clinical psychology work directly with clients in a variety of clinical settings, as these programs boast a great deal of hands-on experience. Psy.D. programs may admit more students, though funding can be sparse in comparison to the Ph.D. Psy.D. students do not need to complete research-heavy coursework, which can allow them to complete the degree in 4-6 years. Ph.D. students may take longer to finish.

Where Do Clinical Psychologists Work?

Graduates who wish to practice clinical psychology must apply for licensure in the state they wish to practice. Requirements vary by state, so students should conduct careful research and compile the necessary materials as they proceed through their degree programs.

To qualify for licensure, applicants must hold a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program. Students should keep track of all practicum and internship hours, as most states require validating paperwork. Licensing boards may review client lists, treatment types, and other details regarding the supervised internship and practicum experience.

All 50 states require the examination for professional practice in psychology, and students should expect to pay fees upwards of $500 to obtain licensure. Typically, clinical psychologists renew their licenses every two to three years, which may require additional fees and continuing education.

Clinical Psychology

The Clinical Psychology Program at Temple University subscribes to the clinical scientist model and provides sound, rigorous training in clinical and research methodologies. The overarching mission of the program is to train creative and accomplished clinical scientists who produce, consume, and disseminate psychological science and who function successfully in academic, research, and applied settings. Doctoral students receive broad-based training in preparation for careers as researchers, educators, and scientifically minded clinicians. Coursework provides students with a solid theoretical and scientific foundation in the core areas of psychology and essential aspects of clinical psychology. Students are immersed in the conduct of research in clinical psychology and its application to the assessment and treatment of persons with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Many of our students conduct research with applied emphases, and they are encouraged to incorporate empirical research directly into their assessment, intervention, and treatment planning. For graduates who choose an academically or research-oriented career path, it is our goal that their research endeavors be informed by a fundamental understanding of basic psychological science, including psychopathology and a solid foundation of clinical skill and experience in the assessment and treatment of persons with psychological, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

For students who go on to do work that is more clinical in nature, our goal is that these graduates not only bring excellence, professionalism, and leadership to their clinical work, but that they do so within a scientific framework. As we define it, this means that they bring the perspectives and habits of scientific inquiry into their clinical work and that their work is continually informed by advances in the scientific literature. To accomplish these goals, Temple students are directly involved in both research and clinical training throughout their tenure, beginning in their very first year.

The Clinical Psychology Program is fully accredited by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) and the American Psychological Association (APA).

The tenets and expectations of PCSAS are highly consistent with our training goals and methods, and we plan to maintain PCSAS accreditation indefinitely. We are actively promoting efforts to ensure that, in the future, programs accredited by PCSAS are given the same access to internship and licensure opportunities as are programs accredited by APA. Once this is achieved, we may re-evaluate our need to maintain APA accreditation.

Goals of Clinical Psychology

The goals of the clinical psychology PhD training program are:

  • Develop clinical psychologists who have a broad understanding of the knowledge base and theoretical and methodological foundations in psychology, and more specifically, in the field of clinical psychology.
  • Develop clinical psychologists who possess the knowledge and skills to conduct high quality and ethical research and make meaningful contributions to the empirical and theoretical literature in clinical psychology.
  • Develop clinical psychologists who are competent in the practice of clinical psychology and are skilled in the ethical application of empirically supported principles and techniques of assessment and intervention in their professional activities.
  • Develop clinical psychologists who seek to integrate science and practice in their research and clinical activities. The overarching goal of the program is to train creative and competent scientists and practitioners who are producers and consumers of knowledge in psychological science and will be competent to function successfully in academic, research, and clinical settings. Some of our students go on to do work that is largely clinical in nature upon completion of their degrees. It is our goal that these graduates not only bring excellence, professionalism, and leadership to their clinical work, but that they do so within a scientific framework. As we define it, this means that they bring the perspectives and habits of scientific inquiry into their clinical work and that their work is continually informed by advances in the scientific literature. For instance, these graduates should be well versed in the application of empirically supported treatments for psychological, emotional and behavioral disorders. Likewise, for the increasing numbers of graduates who choose an academically or research-oriented career path, it is our goal that their research endeavors are informed by a fundamental understanding of psychopathology and a solid foundation of clinical skill and experience in the assessment and treatment of persons with psychological, emotional and behavioral disorders. To accomplish these goals, Temple students are directly involved in both research and clinical training throughout their tenure, beginning in their very first year.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusivity

The Clinical Psychology PhD Program has always been strongly committed to the importance of respect for and understanding of cultural diversity, and we adhere to the principle that excellence should be the primary characteristic upon which our decisions are based. We also believe that there is educational and professional value in attracting students and faculty who represent diverse ethnic, cultural, and personal backgrounds. The University, CLA, Department, and Clinical Program seek to establish an environment that generates understanding, attitudes, and perspectives that create an atmosphere of inclusivity, civility, collegiality, appreciation, and mutual respect for diversity and cultural differences. Accordingly, there are clear nondiscrimination policies in place that prohibit any actions that would restrict program access or completion on grounds that are irrelevant to success in graduate training or the profession (see the University Policies & Resources page  for University nondiscriminatory policies), as well as support diversity, equity, and inclusivity in our approach to all aspects of the Program.

The Department and Program continually strive to create a learning environment that is accessible and welcoming to all students, and to engage in actions that indicate respect for, and understanding of, cultural and individual diversity across all aspects of the graduate program, including recruitment, admissions, retention, and training. Efforts in support of this goal include, but are not limited to, the use of holistic student admissions policies; consultation with Temple’s Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership during faculty searches and for faculty trainings on best diversity, equity, and inclusion practices; faculty’s use of their own research funds to provide waivers for graduate student applicants who demonstrate financial hardship; development and continual collaboration with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee within the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience; joint clinical student-faculty DEI meetings each semester (in addition to the dedicated multicultural course that all PhD clinical students take), initiatives to increase faculty knowledge and awareness of diversity and inclusivity (e.g., facilitated dialogues, trainings, journal clubs); support of graduate application changes and graduate student organization’s efforts focused on inclusivity; faculty community-based participatory research with key stakeholders in the local diverse community; and development with the Department’s Graduate Committee of a graduate student reporting guide and other preventive issues to support inclusivity within the Department.

CUDCP Policy

Information for Applicants  The  Council of University Directors of Clinical Training  has adopted the following guidelines for offers into doctoral clinical psychology programs. If you are applying to a CUDCP program, you should expect the following policies will apply:

  • In most CUDCP programs, a subset of applicants will be invited for an interview. Within a few weeks of the final interview dates, applicants will be notified regarding the status of their application. You may be offered admission, declined admission, placed on a wait list, or in some cases, a decision has not yet been reached regarding your application.
  • Training programs will notify students no longer being considered for admission as soon as possible. In some cases, this information is communicated by the university graduate school and can take several weeks to be processed. In some cases, you may be able to get updated information on the status of the application process (e.g., whether all interview invites have been extended; whether all offers have been extended), on a clinical program’s website, or by contacting a program administrator. Beware of information posted on student-focused online forums that may be inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Offers of admission can be extended during a large time period. Most initial offers of admission are extended by April 1. Offers may be communicated by phone or email, but should be followed up by a written confirmation within 48 hours.
  • You should not be pressured, nor feel compelled to accept an offer of admission before April 15! This applies to offers of admission and to funding offers that accompany admission. It is impermissible for programs to request a decision prior to April 15 or to indicate that funding will be available only if students make decisions earlier than this date. Violations of this policy should be reported to  CUDCP  immediately and your identity will be protected. Of course, it is permissible for you to accept an offer as soon as you are certain of your decision (i.e., even before April 15). But the decision to do so should be based on you, and not due to pressure placed upon you by a training program.
  • Do not hold more than two offers for more than one week unless there is specific information (e.g., a visit is scheduled, funding decisions) you are waiting to receive from the program. Difficulty making up one’s mind is not considered an adequate excuse to limit the options available to other applicants.
  • Once you have accepted an offer of admission to a training program, you should inform all programs in which you are still being considered. Be sure to inform programs either that you are declining outstanding offers of admission or you no longer wish to be considered for admission.

What to Expect From a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Program

What to expect in a clinical psychology doctorate program depends on whether you choose a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology or a doctor of psychology (Psy.D.)

Ph.D. programs prepare graduates for careers in academia. The Psy.D. curriculum focuses on clinical practice working directly with patients. You may find overlapping course content common to both degrees.

What You’ll Learn

Doctoral programs in clinical psychology include courses in cognitive behavior, human development, research, scholarly writing, and learning theories. Graduation usually requires residencies or internships and a dissertation or thesis.

Psy.D. and Ph.D. programs include specialization areas and training in generating knowledge of or providing clinical psychology services.

Students hone skills in the following areas:

  • Culturally appropriate communication skills
  • Knowledge of history and systems of psychology
  • Quantitative and qualitative research
  • Statistical analysis
  • Patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment

Ph.d. program vs. psy.d. program: clinical psychology, program and career goals.

Ph.D. programs center on advancing knowledge of clinical psychology through teaching and scientific research, primarily in higher education. Psy.D. teachings apply scientific knowledge of clinical psychology to groups and individuals. Both types of doctoral degrees can prepare graduates to become licensed psychologists.

Generally, the Ph.D. curriculum includes qualitative and quantitative scientific research, scholarly writing, statistics, and post-secondary teaching methods. Psy.D. courses emphasize clinical psychology methodologies and theories through practical experience in patient assessment, consulting, diagnosis, intervention, and treatment. However, both types of programs include research and clinical practice.

Capstone Experience

While overlap may exist between the two types of doctorates, generally, Ph.D. students can expect to complete comprehensive exams, residencies, and dissertations. Psy.D. programs also require a thesis or examination and experiential learning, such as practicums and internships, providing psychological services to patients.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), graduate students pay an average of $20,556 in tuition and fees in 2020 for a research Ph.D. and $34,566 per year for a professional practice Psy.D. Typically, Ph.D. programs are more likely to offer tuition waivers and teaching or research assistantships than Psy.D. programs.

Average Salary

The average annual salary for graduates of Psy.D. programs is $87,000, with a range of $58,000-$116,000 for clinical psychologists, according to Payscale data from July 2023. Ph.D. graduates average $99,000 per year , and clinical psychologist salaries range from $62,000 to $125,000.

How to Choose a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Program

Choosing a doctorate in clinical psychology entails researching schools and programs to determine which ones best meet your academic and professional goals.

Factors to consider include:

  • Ph.D or Psy.D.: Are your goals more research or clinical-focused? Are you interested in working in academia and research or directly with patients?
  • Accreditation: Is the program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA)?
  • Specialization Areas: Which programs have the research or practice concentrations you're interested in pursuing?
  • Admission Requirements: Do you have the requisite minimum GPA? Have you completed the prerequisite degree or coursework?
  • Cost: Can you afford the tuition? Do the programs offer tuition waivers, assistantships, or financial aid?

How to Get Into a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Program

While admission requirements vary by program, you can expect to see some common requirements.

Most Ph.D. and Psy.D. admissions require:

  • A master's degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program (some may accept a bachelor's degree)
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Prerequisite coursework specified by the program
  • Official transcripts
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement
  • A writing sample
  • An individual or group interview

What Can You Do With a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology?

A doctoral degree — either a Ph.D. or Psy.D. — is the minimum requirement for licensure as a clinical psychologist.

A Ph.D. can lead to research and teaching-focused careers, while a Psy.D. is clinically focused. However, there is some overlap. For example, Psy.D. graduates may conduct applied research and Ph.D. graduates may practice clinical psychology.

Potential clinical psychology careers include child psychologist, forensic psychologist, psychosocial specialist, researcher, and university professor.

Populations clinical psychologists commonly focus on:

  • Children: Working with children , adolescents, and teens, clinical psychologists help with processing emotions, overcoming trauma, employing coping strategies, managing learning disabilities, and addressing mental health issues.
  • Families: Clinical psychologists counsel families as they navigate changes such as divorce or adoption, stress due to job losses or addictions, or conflicts arising from family dynamics. Researchers study families to understand issues and formulate treatment options.
  • People in the legal system: Forensic psychologists and researchers assist those working in the courts and justice systems by creating criminal profiles and evaluating whether suspects are fit to stand trial.
  • People with substance use and mental health conditions: Clinical psychologists help and study patients experiencing mental health disorders and addictions to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and other substances by formulating and implementing effective assessment, diagnostic, and treatment procedures.
  • Older adults: Clinical psychologists and researchers specializing in older adults help those 65 and older deal with life changes, loss of independence, physical and mental health problems, and the deaths of loved ones.

How Much Can You Make With a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists the average annual salary for clinical and counseling psychologists at $102,740 . The BLS reports annual average salaries for psychologists who teach and conduct research at postsecondary schools at $88,470 .

Clinical psychologists who work in research at colleges and universities rather than in clinical practice make $78,300 per year, about $24,000 less than the average salary for all clinical and counseling psychologists, $102,740, according to BLS data.

Clinical Psychology PhD

Ph.d. in clinical psychology.

Welcome to the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Clinical Psychology Program was founded in 1947-1948. It was APA-accredited in the first group of programs that were reviewed for accreditation in 1948 and that status has been uninterrupted. Our most recent site visit from the APA occurred in 2021, and we have been accredited until June 2031.

Our program operates according to a scientist-practitioner model. We are, thus, dedicated to training students to generate empirically-based knowledge in clinical psychology and to perform clinical work that is constantly informed by traditional and emerging scholarship in the field. We expect our students to learn to expertly produce, analyze, and discuss scientific material. We also expect our students to become proficient at providing clinical services to a diverse population. And, most importantly, we expect our students to learn to integrate these two goals. As our mission statement in the TC catalog notes, “The driving goal of our Clinical Psychology Program is to provide rigorous training in both contemporary clinical science and clinical assessment and intervention.”

A good deal of the training, especially that related to research, occurs through intensive participation in a research lab directed by a specific faculty mentor. It is this context, through this lab, that students develop their scientific skills and begin presenting their work at professional conferences and publishing in professional journals. Each student, of course, is also part of a cohort of doctoral students with whom they learn, collaborate, and socialize.

In recent years, graduates of our doctoral program have gained employment in tenure-track academic positions, as research scientists in medical schools, and as clinical researchers in a broad range of treatment settings. In addition, many of our graduates practice independently as well as in community settings for under-served populations.

The list of faculty reviewing and potentially accepting applicants for each cycle is listed on the application itself. Please check the application itself or email the admissions office at

We all know that classic scene where someone is talking to their therapist while lying on a sofa.

While therapy, in general, takes many forms other than the classic scene we always envision, that person the main character was most likely talking to was a psychologist. Psychology is the study of one’s mind and behavior. Clinical psychology is a branch that specifically deals with behavior and mental illness. Those who wish to become a licensed clinical psychologist will most likely have to get their Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

College Choice has compiled a huge ranking of the 55 best PhDs of this field in the nation. These rigorous programs are ideal for future leading researchers and practitioners of psychology. Many of these programs have received national recognition for outstanding research and alumni. Keep reading to see which one may be right for you.

What kind of PhD in clinical psychology should you get?

There are two main advanced degrees you will see out there for Clinical Psychology: a doctor of philosophy (PhD) or a doctor of psychology (PsyD). Although this ranking primarily covers PhD programs, it is important to know the difference as this will impact your future career. While both PhD and PsyD programs require several hours of experience directly in the field, PhD programs heavily emphasize research. Therefore, those who are only interested in direct clinical practice may not wish to get a PhD.

PhD programs are also considered to be more competitive than a PsyD. They tend to require more time, as students generally complete a master’s thesis and a doctoral dissertation. Which one is right for you? Students should discuss with a faculty member or a career advisor before jumping into this challenging program.

Not ready for a PhD program yet? Check out these online master’s in clinical psychology instead.

How much does a PhD in clinical psychology make?

As of May 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median salary of clinical counseling and school psychologists was $76,990, regardless if they have a PhD or not (it should be noted that the majority of clinical psychologists are required to have one). The top ten percent of these people had a median wage of $129,310. Those with a PhD do significantly make more than those with just a Master’s alone.

However, those just starting out in the field should not expect to be immediately making six figures. It is normal to only have a starting salary of about $55,000. Salary is determined by area, type of institution, and years of experience. For example, those in research and expect to earn a little bit more than those just working for a small clinic. The good news is that the demand for psychologists is on the rise and those with an advanced degree have a number of jobs that they qualify for.

What can you do with a PhD in clinical psychology?

The most common career upon completion of this PhD program is to become a clinical psychologist. These licensed psychologists diagnose and treat various emotional and mental issues. Psychologists will work with patients typically in a hospital, clinic, or another similar health facility. Candidates for this position must be passionate, empathetic, and good listeners.

Clinical psychologists who are research-focused will also work with patients but may do so less personally or less often. These psychologists design studies that may focus on an individual or group more generally for the purpose of understanding people’s behavior and emotions, and to develop new treatments. Thus, while they will definitely work with patients, it may be for the purpose of research. Both types of psychologists are equally important to the field today.

What are the requirements for a PhD in clinical psychology?

A PhD in clinical psychology is a full-time program that will take five to seven years to complete, depending on the school’s requirements. For the first few years, students enroll in coursework that goes over the fundamentals of the field and specialization if applicable. During the coursework, students will undergo a supervised practicum either on-campus or at a local health facility. Practicums generally last a couple of years. Around this time students may also be required to submit a master’s thesis , which can help with the doctoral thesis that must be completed at the end of the program. To graduate, students will participate in a year-long internship at the end.

Although master’s students are welcome to apply, generally applicants enter into the program right after undergraduate studies. Schools look for candidates who have a BA or BS in psychology, with a strong GPA and other outside extracurriculars. Applicants should also submit their Graduate Record Examination test scores and any other supplemental items.

Clinical Health Psychology PhD Program

Mission statement.

The mission of the Clinical Health Psychology (CHP) program is to train Scientist-Practitioners who receive a generalist-training in clinical psychology, and who acquire additional knowledge and skill in health psychology and behavioral medicine. We promote a practice of clinical psychology that is evidence-based and integrates the findings of relevant scientific research. We encourage our students to engage in both research and clinical work, and to use critical analysis of the empirical literature to inform their clinical interventions. Our graduates are trained to function in a complex, diverse, and pluralistic society, emphasizing ethical principles and developing knowledge and respect for individual, group, and cultural differences.

Program Director : Amy Wachholtz, PhD

Program Assistant : Kimberly Hill , Ph.D.

CHP Admissions:   [email protected]

CU Denver and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have provided clear statements that we must stand together against racism and injustice. The Clinical Health Psychology program is aligned with these values. Please find here a helpful site of resources regarding racial justice.

The Psychology Department at CU Denver offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) with an emphasis in Clinical Health Psychology (CHP). We are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 2016 (APA, Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, 750 1st St. NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242; 202.336.5979). Our next site visit is Winter/Spring 2024.  Our program adheres to the scientist-practitioner model. Training emphasizes the contribution of research to the understanding, treatment and prevention of a wide range of health-related concerns, and the application of knowledge that is grounded in scientific evidence.

In the CHP program, students are trained in a variety of approaches and techniques for evaluating, diagnosing and treating a wide range of psychological problems. Because our program places an emphasis on health, our students are also trained to assess the psychological factors associated with different medical conditions and learn to design effective interventions that integrate biological, psychological and social (including cultural) factors. Students acquire research expertise by completing a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation and demonstrate competence in clinical assessment and intervention through several applied practica experiences, a clinical competency evaluation, and a pre-doctoral internship. With this broad and intense model of training, our students have gone on to diverse professional postdoctoral fellowships and professional careers. Examples of research opportunities, clinical training opportunities, and post graduate experiences for our students can be found here.

CU Denver is a premier research university in Colorado and the PhD program in CHP was conceived as an important bridge between the Downtown Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC).  The program is housed on the Downtown Campus which is located in the heart of Denver close to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the LoDo District and the state capital.  The Anschutz Medical Campus includes over 5 million square feet of research, educational and clinical space on 227 acres.  The PhD program offers research and clinical opportunities for its students at AMC in addition to the many relationships it has established with other clinical facilities in the Denver area.

The University of Colorado Denver’s CHP program is committed to diversity and fostering inclusion; one in which all individuals- whether from underrepresented, represented, or well represented groups- feel uniquely esteemed, valued and respected.  As psychologists, we understand that a culture of inclusion encourages diverse perspectives and makes our program and students stronger. This is part of our mission to equip future researchers and clinicians to be culturally competent and responsive as they engage in the science and practice of psychology.  Cultural competence and responsiveness in both research and clinical practice is strongly emphasized in our curriculum, clinical training, research, and numerous events in both the University and Denver communities. In our large urban setting, students in our program have excellent opportunities in to expand their research and clinical experience in with regard to diverse and underserved populations, including opportunities in bilingual training. Moreover, students and faculty in the program have a wide range of research interests, including research focused on neurodiversity, varying developmental periods, religious diversity, military couples, physical ability and addiction status, and health and healthcare disparities. Student research regarding diversity is encouraged. Applicants and current students can click the link below for more information about diversity programs at CU Denver.

The program also has a few options when it comes to previous experience. Students with a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related area can start right after completing their undergraduate, while those who have a master’s degree can cut some time off the total investment.

The program isn’t accredited by the American Psychological Association, so students hoping to earn state licensure may need to add a supervised internship experience before applying for licensure in their state.

With several possible Ph.D. degrees that can be earned mostly online , The Chicago School of Professional Psychology has some of the most robust online Ph.D. options. Most of the programs require some in-person experiences and internships, but degree options range from International Psychology to Organizational Leadership.

Most programs require students to have master’s degrees in psychology or related fields, but none of the school’s online Ph.D. programs are accredited by the APA, so students hoping to seek professional licensure will want to be sure they closely scrutinize all internship requirements in the states where they plan to practice.

  • Institution type: Private, not-for-profit
  • Delivery method: Mixed (PhD in International Psychology can be earned mostly online, others require some in-person coursework)
  • Headquarters: Chicago

Eight specializations are on offer, including in substance use disorders, gender, counseling and more. And while most tracks aren’t designed to lead to professional licensure, students can opt to take the California Licensure Track, which focuses on earning the state license for counseling.

Fielding Graduate University offers one of the few Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs on our list that’s also accredited by the APA. While students will sacrifice an entirely online delivery, the added benefit of the APA’s seal of approval may be valuable for students who want to pursue professional licensure.

Most coursework is done online, but students will need to attend some in-person seminars and meetings in their region, in addition to weeklong residential sessions, research and clinical experiences.

  • Headquarters: Santa Barbara, California
  • Accreditation: American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Degrees offered: PhD in Clinical Psychology
  • Possible concentrations: Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, Social Justice and Diversity, Neuropsychology

With a combination of online coursework and in-person seminars, workshops and intensive experiences, Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is one of only a few that can be earned mostly online.

The program is not accredited by the APA, but the educational aspects are designed to meet the licensure standards in many states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaii, New York, Ohio, Texas, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

  • Headquarters: Pasadena, California
  • Accreditation: Senior Commission of Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Expected total PhD tuition: $137,000
  • Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field

Regent University’s online counseling psychology Ph.D. tracks are ideal for students who want an online psychology doctorate that’s grounded in the Christian faith tradition. Students can choose from a wide array of focus areas within their doctoral program, including addictions, grief, biblical counseling, life coaching and more.

Regent’s programs won’t meet the practicum experience requirements that most states have for professional licensure, but interested students should be sure to examine the rules in their state before making their final decisions.

  • Headquarters: Virginia Beach, Virginia
  • Accreditation: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission
  • Degrees offered: PhD in Counseling & Psychological Studies
  • Possible concentrations: Addictions Counseling, Biblical Counseling, Grief Counseling, Human Services Counseling, Human Services for Student Affairs, International, Life Coaching, Marriage & Family Ministry, Pastoral Counseling, Research, Trauma & Crisis Counseling
  • Expected total PhD tuition: $36,225

University of the Cumberlands is home to an online Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision that offers three possible focus areas, addiction, counseling and leadership. The degree track does require in-person practicum experiences, making it a hybrid program.

While it’s not accredited by the APA, the inclusion of a supervised internship experience may be a boost in states where APA-accredited degrees aren’t the only types of doctoral degrees accepted for licensure.

  • Headquarters: Williamsburg, Kentucky
  • Accreditation: Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs
  • Degrees offered: PhD in Counselor Education & Supervision
  • Possible concentrations: Addiction, Advanced Counseling, Leadership
  • Expected total PhD tuition: $26,400
  • Prerequisites: Master’s degree in counseling or psychology

Liberty University’s evangelical Christian tradition serves as the foundation of its entirely online Ph.D. in Psychology. Four concentration areas are available, including the popular and emerging fields of industrial-organizational and developmental psychology.

Optional on-campus intensives are offered for students with the ability to travel to Virginia, or who already live in the area, but the degree does not include an internship requirement. However, students will be able to contribute to research through their dissertations.

  • Headquarters: Lynchburg, Virginia
  • Accreditation: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • Possible concentrations: General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Social Psychology
  • Expected total PhD tuition: $39,970

Michigan State’s Ph.D. in Counseling, Educational Psychology & Special Education is unique among Ph.D. programs at major research universities. That’s because the program is designed to offer an optional hybrid online/in-person delivery method that allows working professionals to complete a doctorate without giving up their careers.

The majority of the program’s work is done online, and students who are able to get the time away from their jobs and families can visit campus for a semester of face-to-face courses. While the program does not include an internship experience, it does require a dissertation, and the online program is designed to be completed in just five years. Michigan State’s educational psychology department is APA-accredited, but because the online Ph.D. does not include a practicum or internship, it may not fulfill educational requirements for licensure in some states.

  • Institution type: Public
  • Headquarters: East Lansing, Michigan
  • Accreditation: American Psychological Association
  • Degrees offered: PhD in Counseling, Educational Psychology & Special Education
  • Expected total PhD tuition: $60,000 (out-of-state)

While the bulk of online Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology, as well as other specialties in the field, can be earned only through in-person, traditional coursework, the handful of programs that can be completed entirely or mostly online gives students who require the flexibility at least a few options that may be right for them.

SMITHFIELD, RI: Bryant University is introducing a Doctor of Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) degree, marking the University’s first doctoral program. Applications for the new Psy.D. program open on September 5, 2024, for the first cohort beginning in Fall of 2025.

The new doctoral program is part of Bryant University's School of Health and Behavioral Sciences’ commitment to improving healthcare delivery and outcomes, particularly to underserved populations, in Rhode Island, New England, and across the United States.

“We are in the midst of a severe behavioral health crisis, with access to care being a major issue,” says Joseph Trunzo, Ph.D., Associate Director of Bryant’s School of Health and Behavioral Sciences and clinical psychologist. “The School of Health and Behavioral Sciences at Bryant University is proud to launch this program, training clinicians of the highest quality to help serve the public and alleviate suffering across all populations and settings.”

“Bryant University’s new Doctor of Clinical Psychology degree demonstrates our growing leadership in the healthcare space,” says Bryant University President Ross Gittell, Ph.D. “Our strong doctoral program will increase access to mental healthcare for Rhode Islanders by bringing qualified clinicians into the communities where they are most needed.”

“Bryant University listens and responds to the needs of our community with high quality, high impact programs,” says Bryant University Provost Rupendra Paliwal, Ph.D. “There is an urgent need for qualified clinicians in the mental health field and this new Psy.D. program is key to bolstering the number of clinical psychologists in Rhode Island and across the U.S.”

More qualified mental health clinicians needed locally and nationally

The COVID pandemic accelerated a growing mental health crisis across the U.S. There is a growing shortage of qualified, licensed clinical practitioners nationwide and, more specifically, in Rhode Island.

National Alliance of Mental Illness reports 178,000 adults in RI have a diagnosed mental health condition and 41.5% of adults reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Along with this growing need across the state, there is a mental healthcare desert in Washington and Newport counties, leaving one quarter of a million people without access to care in their own communities. Rising costs are also a factor, with one third of Rhode Islanders who need mental health care unable to access treatment due to cost.

Preparing for clinical careers

The new Psy.D. degree is built upon the impressive undergraduate psychology program growing at Bryant University’s School of Health and Behavioral Sciences, which also offers graduate programs in Physician Assistant Studies and Healthcare Informatics. Psy.D. students will learn from acclaimed faculty who are leaders in the field and gain valuable experience through a wide range of clinical placements.

Bryant’s Psy.D. curriculum adheres to the scholar-practitioner model of training, which emphasizes clinical practice backed by scientific research. Psy.D. students will receive a well-rounded education in psychological science and the practice of clinical psychology. Bryant is a leading university in experiential education and Psy.D. students can expect critical hands-on experience treating patients in clinical settings through practicum placements and a doctoral internship.

Psy.D. students can opt to specialize in one of two concentrations: Child and Adolescent Psychology and Health Psychology. Both concentrations have a shortage of qualified specialists to provide care to these growing populations.

What will students gain in this program?

In addition to the crucial clinical focus, a Doctoral Research Project is a core part of Bryant’s Psy.D. curriculum. This research will add to the robust work published and presented by the professors in the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences.

The Psy.D. will also provide exceptional opportunities for Bryant’s undergraduate psychology majors to engage and interact with graduate students doing advanced clinical training and research.

Accreditation

Bryant University is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology is subject to approval from NECHE.

The American Psychological Association does not allow for application for accreditation until the program has matriculated its second cohort, and it is a multiyear process. The curriculum and the educational experience have been designed and built according to APA accreditation standards. As such, APA accreditation will be pursued at the earliest possible time.
