Speech on Books Are Our Best Friends

Books, they say, are like mirrors to the soul. They can be your constant companions, guiding you, teaching you, and transporting you to different worlds.

Think of a rainy day, a cozy blanket, and a good book in hand. Isn’t it a perfect picture of peace and happiness? That’s the magic books bring into our lives.

1-minute Speech on Books Are Our Best Friends

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, let’s talk about books. Books are like magic. They take us to places we’ve never been. They introduce us to people we’ve never met. They teach us about things we’ve never known. In short, books are our best friends.

Think about it. A good friend is always there for you, right? Just like a good book. It’s always there, waiting for you. No matter what time of day or night, you can pick up a book and lose yourself in its pages. You can share your joys and sorrows with it. It won’t judge you, it won’t leave you. It will always be there for you.

Books also help us grow. They fill our minds with new ideas and make us think in ways we never have before. They challenge us and push us to be better. Just like a best friend would do. They make us laugh, they make us cry, they make us feel. They make us human.

But the best part about books is that they never change. Even if we change, the book remains the same. It’s like a time capsule, holding onto a piece of our past. We can always go back to it, relive those moments, feel those feelings again. Just like with a best friend.

So, let’s cherish our books. Let’s take care of them. Let’s read them, learn from them, grow with them. Because books are more than just pages filled with words. They are our best friends, our guides, our teachers. They are a part of us. Thank you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

There’s a saying that goes, “A book is a gift you can open again and again.” Today, I stand before you to speak on the topic ‘Books Are Our Best Friends.’ We all have friends, right? Friends who make us laugh, who share our secrets, who stand by us in times of happiness and sorrow. But, there’s a friend who is always there, waiting for us. That friend is a book.

Imagine, you are alone at home, with no one to talk to. You feel bored. What do you do? You pick up a book. As you turn the pages, you enter a new world. A world full of magic, adventure, mystery, or knowledge. Books take us on a journey. A journey that can be as exciting as a roller coaster ride or as peaceful as a walk in the park.

Books are like a treasure chest, filled with jewels of knowledge. They teach us about the world, about life, about people and places we have never seen. They help us understand things that we might find difficult. They make us smarter and wiser. Just like a good friend, a book never judges us. It only guides us, helping us make sense of the world around us.

Books also help us explore our feelings. They make us laugh, they make us cry, they make us feel scared, and sometimes, they even make us fall in love. They help us understand our own emotions. They show us that it’s okay to be happy, sad, angry, or scared. Just like a true friend, a book understands us and accepts us for who we are.

And the best part? Books are always there for us. They never leave us. They never get angry with us. They never stop talking to us. They are always ready to share their stories, their knowledge, their wisdom. All they ask for in return is a little bit of our time.

In conclusion, books are indeed our best friends. They entertain us, they educate us, they understand us, and they are always there for us. So, let’s cherish this friendship. Let’s read more books. Let’s travel to new worlds, meet new characters, learn new things. Let’s make books our best friends. Because a friend like a book is a friend indeed.

8 reasons why books are my best friends

Books are my best friends. It might seem strange to say that, but if you’re a literature lover, you’ll know what I mean.

Rather than going out, often you’re happier curling up with a good book, and even when you are socializing, you must force yourself to partake, countering the urge to retreat to a quiet corner and continue reading.

Frequently, you find yourself drawn to second-hand bookshops like a moth to flame, browsing for hours in aisles of dusty books that are piled precariously to the ceiling in a jumbled maze.

For me, this predilection started early.

For the love of reading

I was lucky – my mother was an avid reader, and she passed her love of books onto me at an early age.

I remember being absolutely captivated by my first novels, suspended in time, absorbed by the storylines.

This early interest blossomed into a passion, and soon I desperately awaited the arrival of new books, pleading with my parents for another installment.

Partly, that was due to growing up in the country, and not having access to an immediate social group. Like any child without many playmates, I frequently became bored.

Fortunately, books were the perfect escape, transporting me to another world at the turn of a page.

It all started with adventure novels and the brave exploits of protagonists’ venturing forth and discovering new lands, a symbolic feeling for a child limited in location and mobility.

Indeed, I think this early reading was the impetus for my eventual international travel and the urge to explore far-flung destinations, going off-grid and chasing adventure.

How can books be your best friends?

Often, being bookish is synonymous with introversion, and I feel that even if it’s not causational, there’s a correlation.

Literature lovers, while able to socialize effectively, often feel drained by the encounter and require solitary time to recharge.

More often, they might prefer to socialize one-on-one, where attention is undivided and not overly dispersed.

There’s also a certain observational quality in those who enjoy reading.

Instead of playing the extrovert at the center of attention, you may prefer being on the edge and looking in, analyzing social interactions and exchanges.

Such social fatigue is real, and is one reason why many readers prefer spending time with their books to other people.

However, such tendencies need not be negative. Indeed there are many benefits to regarding books as your best friends. Let’s explore them.

8 benefits of book friendship

Some people might find book friendship to be a slightly odd phenomenon, but there are incredible benefits to welcoming reading into your life.

1. Books increase our emotional intelligence

The sensitivity of bibliophiles towards excessive social interaction seems to frequently lend itself to increased empathy.

Indeed, perhaps literature is the perfect vehicle for developing such emotional intelligence, as readers sympathize with characters of varying backgrounds, dispositions, and motives.

Some of the best writing challenges you to adopt a more tolerant mindset, forcing you to understand even its most despicable characters.

Such sensitivity can’t help but transfer into everyday interactions.

2. Books help us understand ourselves

Reading widely can help us get to know ourselves better.

Listen to your literary preferences and the types of books you enjoy consuming.

Be cognisant of the characters you resonate with, seeing how their actions might be mirrored in your own life.

Often, authors use literature as a vehicle to impart important life lessons, either inspired by reality or to magnify some of the best and worst traits of humanity.

Exposing yourself to these themes helps develop your worldview, creating a personal creed, perspective and values to live by, which evolve over time as we age.

3. Books are inspirational

Good books are incredibly inspiring. Depending on your chosen genre, you could either be motivated creatively to pursue arts projects of your own, or driven towards another form of personal development .

If you’ve been reading this site for a while, you’ll know that I’m keen on nonfiction and in particular, self-help books.

One of my favorite reads is a book by David Goggins , an ex-Navy SEAL, pull-up world record holder, and ultramarathoner.

His message of resilience in the face of adversity is a potent reminder to overcome our personal obstacles and his message continues to motivate readers to strive toward personal growth.

4. Books impart knowledge

Books are a repository of human knowledge, distilling the most important lessons for the benefit of our society.

Literature, in its long history, has been responsible for transmitting its teachings by expanding on the capacity of the individual brain to process knowledge by storing it in a portable, semi-timeless format.

Reading allows us to travel to distant lands and learn about other cultures, all from the comfort of our living room.

In this way, hard-won skills and knowledge from previous generations and other societies coalesce and compound, and we as a species, progress.

This benefit has only magnified in the digital age, where we now have any book we could ever want at our fingertips, downloadable in an instant.

Whether you live in a land of opportunity or a developing country, access to literature really is a shortcut to cognitive development and future potential.

5. Books improve physical and mental health

Just as we benefit from spending time with flesh and blood friends, reading books has a profound impact on our physical and mental health.

Indeed, reading from a young age has been shown to assist adolescent development, staving off cognitive decline in later life and helping us live longer.

Research also shows that reading also enhances the quality of our lives, providing a vital antidote to stress and allowing us to sleep more soundly.

As you can see, while socializing with fellow humans is still vital, reserving time for books is just as crucial.

6. Books are non-judgemental

Many sensitive people are drawn to books as, unlike humans, they’re non-judgmental.

Perhaps you feel intimidated by the expectations of others and falter in the face of performance pressure.

In such instances, it’s liberating to retreat into the world of literature, where there are no demands and you can simply be yourself, whether you feel sad, lonely, or vulnerable.

7. Books are constant companions

Humans are fallible creatures, driven by emotion. One moment, your friends might be happy with you, while the next, they may become angry.

One moment you could be in a loving, supportive relationship, while the next minute, your spouse could leave you.

One instant, you could have a close family, and the next, you could be struck down by bereavement and loss.

Books, in contrast, are constant companions, supporting you through thick and thin, providing their own unique form of therapy .

8. Books are an escape

Sometimes reality is just too much. Work deadlines, bill payments, family commitments…

The minutia of life can grind us down until we feel completely drained. This is one reason why books are our best friends.

Whenever we’re emotionally overwhelmed, reading offers the perfect respite, allowing us to retreat into a fictional world, relieving all the pressure of our hyperconnected lives.

So, the next time you feel burned out, try relaxing and re-nourishing in the fantastical world of books.

Books play a vital role on an individual and societal level.

Not only do they help shape our cultural advancement, but they also provide a vital method of personal development.

So my advice? Make friends with books.

Books Are Our Best Friends: 12 Reasons Why it is Absolutely True

  • By Subodh Sharma

Spider-man reading a book

I remember when I was in class 4 and took part in an intra-school essay writing competition. We were supposed to write an essay on Books are our best friends . And guess what? I could not even write a single paragraph properly!

Reason for that was simple. Back then I did not read any books other than our academic textbooks. So I had no idea on how books can really be our best friends.

It’s been about 14 years since that competition and if now I would be asked to write an essay on the same topic, I could just go on for pages without even having to think much about it.

And again, the reason is simple. In these years, I have understood the importance of reading , built this special bonding with books, developed the habit of reading and experienced great changes in my life myself. For me, books are my best friends for sure and I guess the same is true for most book lovers.

Here are 12 amazing points to show why books are our best friends:

1. Books never judge you

No matter how you look, what you wear or what other people think about you, books will never judge you based on anything.

Books don’t care whether you are rich or poor, fat or skinny, white or colored, or anything. They will accept you the way you are without ever asking you any question.

2. Books will never leave you alone

A girl reading a book on a platform near a lake

If you are a book lover, you can never really feel lonely. Books will be there for you in your happiness or your sorrow.

You can always turn to books whenever you feel lonely or bored. And this is one of the biggest reasons why I feel that books are our best friends.

3. Books take you into the world of adventures

Have you been to Hogwarts?

Well, if you are a Harry Potter fan, you surely have been there. Different genres of books such as adventure, mystery, thriller, science fiction, fantasy, etc. take you into the world of fun, excitement, and adventure.

Once you are bonded to reading books, you can visit places you would not have even imagined.

4. Books can make you laugh

A girl reading a book in bathtub and laughing

Books have this brilliant ability to make you laugh. At times, you won’t even notice that you were reading a book and something you just read brought a beautiful broad smile on your face.

That’s the power of books. Call it friendship or anything you like, but that is the level of bonding that books share with their readers.

5. Books can relieve your stress

According to a  research by the University of Sussex , reading a book for just six minutes can reduce your stress level by as high as 68 percent!

Don’t we all want this quality in our best friends?

Of course, we do. And books can do that for us pretty well. If you are stressed out, just read a good book for a while. You will notice the magic yourself.

6. Books help you sleep better

If you have a habit of reading before going to bed, you may already know how beneficial it is for us. Reading a good book before bed calms our mind, relaxes our body and prepares us for a better and quality sleep.

If you want to know more about it, I have an article where I have discussed 10 Amazing benefits of reading before bed . Do give it a read.

7. Books will go anywhere with you

If you are willing to carry them, books will go anywhere with you. Whether it’s a long train journey or one of the most boring places in the world, books will accompany you anywhere without any question.

And if you happen to be spider-man, then well, you can climb up a wall and read there too. 😉

8. Books don’t get angry at you

Books don’t mind if you hang out with others. They don’t get angry at you even if you ignore them and choose one book over the other.

Even if you are reading a book after years, it will treat you the same good way without holding any grudge.

9. Books never make excuses

A boy reading a book at night with torch light

Books always have time for you. If you want to read it till late at night, it will be there for you. If you want to read it early in the morning, it will still be there for you. It will never get tired of you and it will never make any excuses.

You will just have to be willing to read it, and it will be available for you anytime!

There is no friend as loyal as a book. - Ernest Hemingway Click To Tweet

10. Books never complain

Though we always try to treat our books well, we may handle them poorly sometimes. But they still don’t complain and be with us.

Moreover, books don’t have any demands. They don’t want anything in return.

11. Books help you discover and know yourself better

Books can help you discover and bring out the best in you. Through its many lessons, books have the ability to make you understand what is wrong and what is right.

In long-term, books help us build our personality. It molds our thoughts, increases our knowledge and makes us smarter!

12. Books give us hope, courage, and motivation

A boy reading a motivational book

An ideal best friend will never let you feel down. And the same is true with books. If at any instance of your life, you feel discouraged or demotivated, just pick up a good inspirational book and start reading.

It might not solve your problem, but it will definitely give you hope and courage to face it and find a solution. Books are a huge source of motivation and inspiration.

So, these were some of the reasons why I feel books are our best friends. However, I do not intend to mean that only books and not humans can be our best friends.

Of course, both can be. It’s just that it’s pretty hard to find so many qualities in a friend. And if you have such great friend already, consider yourself lucky and never let go of him/her.

In the comment section below, do tell us about your experience with books. Do you consider them to be your friend? Your teacher? Or anything special?  We would love to know.

Here is a beautiful quote by Charles William Eliot to show what he thought of books.

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. - Charles W. Eliot Click To Tweet

Even more than books, authors and characters. I’ve fallen in love with several authors while reading them and it feels amazing. Every time I dive deep in a book I get lost in it. No human relationship can match that feeling.

Nice read, totally agree with every point.

Thnk u i have got it.

I am a big reader myself and I can totally relate to all of this. I would read all the time, but my parents tell me that I have to spend some time away from books.

It helped my project thank u so much

best arguments ever……………..

books don’t leave you for another man

Couldn’t agree more, Tykeion! 🙂

The Future Of Books

The technological revolution has impacted every aspect of our lives, including the way we consume literature. The rise of e-books has been one of the most significant changes in the publishing industry in recent years. While there are benefits to e-books, such as their convenience and portability, they also have drawbacks. For instance, many people still prefer the feel of a physical book in their hands, and e-books can cause eye strain and disrupt sleep patterns.

Audiobooks have also become increasingly popular in recent years, especially with the rise of podcasts and audio streaming platforms. Audiobooks provide a convenient way to consume literature on-the-go and allow people to multitask while listening. However, some people argue that listening to audiobooks is not the same as reading a physical book since it eliminates the act of visually processing the text and can lead to a less engaged reading experience.

Cultivating A Reading Habit

Reading regularly can have numerous benefits, such as improving vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and creativity. However, many people struggle to make reading a habit, either due to a lack of time or motivation. One way to cultivate a reading habit is to set aside a specific time each day for reading, such as before bed or during lunch breaks. Creating a comfortable reading environment, such as a cozy reading nook or investing in a comfortable reading chair, can also help make reading a more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Another effective strategy is to choose books that align with personal interests or goals. For instance, if someone is interested in learning more about a particular topic, reading a book on that subject can help them achieve that goal while also promoting a love for reading.

Cultivating A Reading Habit

In conclusion, books are essential to our lives and act as our best friends. They offer a source of comfort, knowledge, relaxation, and empathy. While the rise of technology has impacted the way we consume literature, physical books remain a beloved medium for many readers. Cultivating a reading habit can have numerous benefits, and strategies such as creating a reading-friendly environment and choosing books that align with personal interests can help make reading a daily habit. It’s time to prioritize reading and rediscover the joy of getting lost in a good book.

Essay on 'books are our best friends ' (200-250 words)

Books (books are our best friends) books are our best friends, there is a saying. books are the ones which give us an enormous amount of knowledge. we go to school and learn a lot of new stuff. we are taught a lot of things and we are told some things. but to completely understand all concepts in the subjects, we need to read and consult the books. the people who tell, teach or advise us are not always there with us. but the books are always with us. we can refer to them and clarify our doubts or remind ourselves of some point we have forgotten or learn a point which we have not looked into so far. books may be costly to buy. but good books are worth more than the money. they give something more than money can give. when we are traveling and have to spend time on the journey, it is good to read books. when we are at home and have nothing very important or urgent to do, it is better to read books. the time is well spent and we gain interesting things. we need to put the books to good use. we need to organize them well. we need to read the right kind of books at the right time. often some people with disturbed minds try to read the great and sacred epics like ramayana or some sthothras of gods to keep their minds occupied and to regain peace of mind. books written by great persons generate noble thoughts in us. they give us analytical skills. they help in the conceptualization of concepts and practical problems. people sometimes ridicule some serious book readers. it is important to be practical in applying the knowledge gained from the books and not just remain readers. good use of books means learning the appropriate knowledge, let it be technical, language skills, or general knowledge, or fun-related stuff. we shine with a bright face and have more confidence in ourselves when using the books. it is also very important to note down important points, thoughts, doubts, or footnotes in a good notebook when we read the book. we should use the books carefully without damaging them. we should keep them safe from a wet environment and keep them away from dust. we should not make a lot of drawings or funny and crazy remarks on the books, ridiculing anybody or any concept. one good advantage of using books is that we can select what we want, we can read what we want and whenever we want. in the modern world, books are also changing their appearance from the hard copy in paperbacks to ebooks on the internet. it depends on whether we are comfortable reading a hard copy or a soft-copy on the computer. finally, i will say that we have progressed in this age this much because of the great laws, concepts, sciences, thoughts, inventions, discoveries, and their efforts that were documented by our ancestors in the form of books. those books have accelerated the progress of our civilization..

Trump promotes Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless The USA Bible': What to know about the book and its long journey

books are our best friends speech

  • Former president Donald Trump encourages supporters to buy Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA Bible," a project inspired by Nashville country musician's hit song.
  • Resurgent version of Greenwood's Bible project a modified version from original concept, a change that likely followed 2021 shake-up in publishers.

After years with few updates about Lee Greenwood’s controversial Bible, the project is again resurgent with a recent promotion by former President Donald Trump.

“All Americans need to have a Bible in their home and I have many. It’s my favorite book,” Trump said in a video posted to social media Tuesday, encouraging supporters to purchase the “God Bless The USA Bible.” “Religion is so important and so missing, but it’s going to come back.”

Greenwood — the Nashville area country musician whose hit song “God Bless the USA” inspired the Bible with a similar namesake — has long been allies with Trump and other prominent Republicans, many of whom are featured in promotional material for the “God Bless The USA Bible.” But that reputational clout in conservative circles hasn’t necessarily translated to business success in the past, largely due to a major change in the book’s publishing plan.

Here's what to know about the Bible project’s journey so far and why it’s significant it’s back in the conservative limelight.

An unordinary Bible, a fiery debate

The “God Bless The USA Bible” received heightened attention since the outset due to its overt political features.

The text includes the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to the chorus to Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.” Critics saw it as a symbol of Christian nationalism, a right-wing movement that believes the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation.

A petition emerged in 2021 calling Greenwood’s Bible “a toxic mix that will exacerbate the challenges to American evangelicalism.” From there, a broader conversation ensued about the standards by which publishers print Bibles.

Gatekeeping in Bible publishing

Greenwood’s early business partner on the project, a Hermitage-based marketing firm called Elite Source Pro, initially reached a manufacturing agreement with the Nashville-based HarperCollins Christian Publishing to print the “God Bless The USA Bible.”

As part of that agreement, HarperCollins would publish the book but not sell or endorse it. But then HarperCollins reversed course , a major setback for Greenwood’s Bible.

The reversal by HarperCollins followed a decision by Zondervan — a publishing group under HarperCollins Christian Publishing and an official North American licensor for Bibles printed in the New International Version translation — to pass on the project. HarperCollins said the decision was unrelated to the petition or other public denunciations against Greenwood’s Bible.

The full backstory: Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless the USA Bible' finds new printer after HarperCollins Christian passes

A new translation and mystery publisher

The resurgent “God Bless The USA Bible” featured in Trump’s recent ad is an altered version of the original concept, a modification that likely followed the publishing shake-up.

Greenwood’s Bible is now printed in the King James Version, a different translation from the original pitch to HarperCollins.

Perhaps the biggest mystery is the new publisher. That manufacturer is producing a limited quantity of copies, leading to a delayed four-to-six weeks for a copy to ship.

It’s also unclear which business partners are still involved in the project. Hugh Kirkman, who led Elite Service Pro, the firm that originally partnered with Greenwood for the project, responded to a request for comment by referring media inquiries to Greenwood’s publicist.

The publicist said Elite Source Pro is not a partner on the project and the Bible has always been printed in the King James Version.

"Several years ago, the Bible was going to be printed with the NIV translation, but something happened with the then licensor and the then potential publisher. As a result, this God Bless The USA Bible has always been printed with the King James Version translation," publicist Jeremy Westby said in a statement.

Westby did not have the name of the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.

Trump’s plug for the “God Bless The USA Bible” recycled language the former president is using to appeal to a conservative Christian base.

“Our founding fathers did a tremendous thing when they built America on Judeo-Christian values,” Trump said in his video on social media. “Now that foundation is under attack perhaps as never before.”

A Proclamation on Transgender Day of Visibility,   2024

On Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect Union — where all people are created equal and treated equally throughout their lives.

I am proud that my Administration has stood for justice from the start, working to ensure that the LGBTQI+ community can live openly, in safety, with dignity and respect.  I am proud to have appointed transgender leaders to my Administration and to have ended the ban on transgender Americans serving openly in our military.  I am proud to have signed historic Executive Orders that strengthen civil rights protections in housing, employment, health care, education, the justice system, and more.  I am proud to have signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, ensuring that every American can marry the person they love.

Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our Nation.  Whether serving their communities or in the military, raising families or running businesses, they help America thrive.  They deserve, and are entitled to, the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the most fundamental freedom to be their true selves.  But extremists are proposing hundreds of hateful laws that target and terrify transgender kids and their families — silencing teachers; banning books; and even threatening parents, doctors, and nurses with prison for helping parents get care for their children.  These bills attack our most basic American values:  the freedom to be yourself, the freedom to make your own health care decisions, and even the right to raise your own child.  It is no surprise that the bullying and discrimination that transgender Americans face is worsening our Nation’s mental health crisis, leading half of transgender youth to consider suicide in the past year.  At the same time, an epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, especially women and girls of color, continues to take too many lives.  Let me be clear:  All of these attacks are un-American and must end.  No one should have to be brave just to be themselves.

At the same time, my Administration is working to stop the bullying and harassment of transgender children and their families.  The Department of Justice has taken action to push back against extreme and un-American State laws targeting transgender youth and their families and the Department of Justice is partnering with law enforcement and community groups to combat hate and violence.  My Administration is also providing dedicated emergency mental health support through our nationwide suicide and crisis lifeline — any LGBTQI+ young person in need can call “988” and press “3” to speak with a counselor trained to support them.  We are making public services more accessible for transgender Americans, including with more inclusive passports and easier access to Social Security benefits.  There is much more to do.  I continue to call on the Congress to pass the Equality Act, to codify civil rights protections for all LGBTQI+ Americans.

Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans:  You are loved.  You are heard.  You are understood.  You belong.  You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.  I call upon all Americans to join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

                             JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.
