CRICOS-Registered Courses

Cricos courses for a student visa.

CRICOS Australia lists the courses that make international students eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500) .

The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is a government register. It provides a list of all education providers (high schools, colleges & universities), and their courses, which are approved for international students.

If an education provider is not on the list, they can only teach to domestic students (meaning local Australia ns ) .

Institutions in the list have met the requirements & standards set by the Australian government. In addition, each course that they deliver to international students must also be approved. How do I know if a course is CRICOS-registered? It can be very frustrating to find the perfect course, but then find out it is not available to international students. When you are looking at an education provider's website, you should see a CRICOS Provider Code at the bottom (footer) of the website.  If you do not see one, it likely means they only teach domestic students. Here is an example:

CRICOS Provider Code example

How to Search for CRICOS Courses

An experienced and knowledgeable education agent has access to all of the courses you could be considering. However, you can also do your own CRICOS course search. Be aware that the pricing you see on the CRICOS website is often not up-to-date, or scholarship offers are not included. Also be aware that even though a course is listed in the CRICOS registry, it does not guarantee that the education provider is currently delivering it. How to use the registry:

Select Courses

Select the Australian State in which you will study

Add the course keywords/name - it may require a few different variations to find the course name you are interested in.

Select the level of education

Click on Start Search

You will then see a list of the education providers that you can investigate for that course.

Click here to search the CRICOS website for course ideas.

Take all of this stress away with professional help. Education agents often have special offers to promote, and should assist free of charge.  How can an education agent help me?

Note:  We can ask you for evidence of your English language skill after you have submitted your application, at any time while we are processing your application, even though the Document Checklist tool shows that you don’t need to provide evidence of your English language skill when you submit your application.

If you need to provide evidence of your English language skill, you must provide evidence that you:

  • have obtained a certain test score in an English language test that the Department has approved, or

How to apply for CRICOS registration

To deliver higher education courses to overseas students, you first need to apply to TEQSA to be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

Applications for CRICOS registration usually take 3 to 6 months for TEQSA to assess. This timeframe is dependent on a high-quality application with minimal delays in responding to TEQSA’s requests. Information on the entire registration process and timeframes can be found here . Once CRICOS registration is granted, it can take a further 2 to 4 weeks for a CRICOS code to be issued and the newly registered provider listed on the CRICOS register. Providers are unable to advertise courses to overseas students or begin recruiting overseas students until CRICOS registration is granted and a CRICOS code has been issued by the Department of Education.

1. Be registered as a higher education provider under the TEQSA Act

Before applying to be registered on CRICOS with TEQSA you must first be registered as a higher education provider under the TEQSA Act. TEQSA will not accept applications for CRICOS registration unless your institute has been registered as a higher education provider, except for providers seeking only to deliver English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) courses or Foundation Programs.

2. Prepare your application

Once registered as a higher education provider by TEQSA, you may begin to prepare your application for CRICOS registration. Please lodge your intention to apply for CRICOS registration by contacting the CRICOS team at [email protected] .

TEQSA highly recommends that you closely review the requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) and National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 (National Code) to understand your obligations. Your application should demonstrate how you meet, or will meet, each of these obligations. The evidence requirements for applications for CRICOS Registration can be found in TEQSA’s Confirmed Evidence Table (CET).

  • Download Confirmed Evidence Table for CRICOS Registration  (MS Word, 140 KB)

3. Submit your application

Once all evidence has been prepared, you can submit your application through TEQSA's provider portal . TEQSA will initially determine whether the application is complete and includes all required evidence. If not, TEQSA will notify you of what evidence is missing and provide an opportunity to submit this evidence to complete the application.

4. TEQSA assesses the application

Once your application includes all required evidence, TEQSA will begin its assessment. TEQSA assesses the evidence to determine whether the provider will comply with all requirements of the ESOS Act, the National Code, and any other relevant legislation within the ESOS Framework.

If TEQSA identifies any areas where the application is not compliant with these legislative requirements, or at risk of non-compliance, TEQSA will outline its findings in a proposed decision. You will be afforded an opportunity to respond to these concerns and submit additional or revised evidence to demonstrate compliance, usually within 28 days.

5. TEQSA’s decision

TEQSA may approve or reject your application. In doing so, TEQSA will notify you of its decision and the reasons for the decision in writing.

If TEQSA approves the application, it may decide to approve a period of registration less than the maximum 7 years. TEQSA may also decide to impose conditions on your registration to manage any risks that have not been fully addressed in the application.

If TEQSA decides to reject the application, or if you are dissatisfied with TEQSA’s decision, you may seek a review of that decision. Information on your options for review are outlined on our Review of TEQSA Decisions page.

Concurrent enrolment

If you enrol in more than one award course, either at the University of Sydney or across institutions, this is called concurrent enrolment.

You can only enrol concurrently if you have approval from the relevant associate deans, or if it is an approved part of a combined or double degree.

When concurrently enrolled, your total study load across both degrees can't exceed a full-time study load. Find out more about your study load .

For more information on conditions and applying for concurrent enrolment, see section 66 of the Coursework Policy  and additional faculty or school information below.

Before you apply

Before you apply, check your course requirements in your handbook to understand how concurrent enrolment may impact your studies.

If you’re an international student, seek advice about your eCoE and visa .

How to apply

You need to submit your application after your results have been released for the current semester, but before the start of the semester you want to be concurrently enrolled in. If you apply before results are released, your application will be rejected and you'll need to reapply.

The application process varies between faculties and schools. Read the additional information below to understand how to apply and to find the correct form to use.

Architecture, design and planning

If you are a postgraduate student and want to apply for concurrent enrolment, you can submit a request through the course management form .

If you're currently undertaking honours, you're not eligible to enrol concurrently in another course.
