Landing a nursing job straight out of college can be challenging. A good nursing capstone project on your resume shows initiative and can give you an edge over other applicants. But coming up with unique and intriguing nursing capstone project ideas is easier said than done.

In this complete guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about developing standout capstone nursing projects, from understanding what they are to generating creative topic ideas across nursing specializations. Let’s get started!

What is the Nursing Capstone Project?

A nursing capstone project is a final-year assignment that allows students to demonstrate competency in clinical practice. It requires conducting independent research on a healthcare-related issue to propose an evidence-based solution.

Capstone project writing takes various forms, including research proposals, quality improvement initiatives, community health promotion programs, education plans, or systematic literature reviews. The central aim is to address a problem that is meaningful to current nursing practice.

Capstones assess the capacity to synthesize classroom and clinical learning into recommendations that enhance patient outcomes. They also evaluate skills in critical inquiry, using quality evidence, and effectively presenting key learnings.

Why Capstone Projects Are Important for Nursing Students

Undertaking an independent capstone lays solid foundations for professional and academic growth in four key ways:

Develops Crucial Research Abilities

From performing literature reviews to data analysis, capstones build vital skills for continuous learning throughout a nursing career. Evaluating research and distinguishing high-quality evidence is central to nursing practice.

Cultivates Problem-Solving Skills

Determining creative solutions to complex patient issues is central to quality care. Capstones teach logical and analytical thinking to make evidence-based clinical judgments.

Strengthens Written and Oral Communication

Conveying research professionally is imperative for patient safety. Capstones provide opportunities to produce scholarly papers and deliver engaging presentations to hone these skills.

Provides a Competitive Edge

Outstanding projects attract positive faculty recommendations for graduate school and convey career dedication to employers.

Difference between a Nursing Capstone Project and a Nursing Thesis

Before selecting a topic, recognizing distinctions between nursing capstones versus theses lays strong foundations. Theses demand in-depth investigations into a focused research problem. Capstones incorporate broader literature reviews on a practice area to recommend an initiative.

While research-oriented master’s theses aim to generate new nursing knowledge, capstones demonstrate the ability to apply existing evidence to real clinical settings.

Useful Tips When Choosing Great Nursing Capstone Ideas

An eye-catching topic aligned with personal and professional aspirations kickstarts strong capstone projects. Consider these pointers:

  • Select issues connected to your desired career specialization. Picking neonatal ICU concepts builds NICU prospects.
  • Identify problems needing solutions through nursing news sites and journals. Underexplored issues position you as an innovator.
  • Draw inspiration from clinical observations revealing patient care obstacles. Address challenges you’ve personally witnessed.
  • Review prior outstanding projects for engageable topics and structure expectations. Build on alumni capstone ideas.
  • Use course lectures and textbooks pointing to therapy areas needing advancements. Instructors highlight promising themes.
  • Ensure substantial research exists to support recommendations. Seek issues with sufficient evidence available.
  • Pick narrow, focused topics, allowing in-depth investigation within limitations. Broad concepts become unmanageable.
  • Verify capacity to access settings and data sources essential for proposed projects. Consider feasibility constraints.
  • Determine projects addressing problems meaningful to patient outcomes over personal interests alone. Select issues with genuine practice impacts.
  • Receive professor input on initial topic concepts through early discussions. Faculty can refine ideas needing honing.

Capstone courses function as a bridge between the end of school and the beginning of a career, allowing nursing students to put what they’ve learned into practice. As the name suggests, students complete capstones toward the end of their nursing training. Not every nursing program requires a capstone, but those that do generally culminate in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree.

Each nursing program sets their own requirements. While capstone formats differ between programs, they typically consist of an evidence-based practice formal paper or presentation. Students might complete their capstone projects as team leaders, and BSN candidates may present their papers to a faculty panel. Projects could include case studies, program evaluations, and policy analyses.

The focus on evidence-based practice allows students to apply research and experiential evidence toward solving a healthcare problem. For example, candidates may develop intervention strategies that promote health, improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and foster safe practices for patients.

Capstone goals center on the application of knowledge gained during nursing training programs, including topics related to leadership , management, research, theories, and evidence-based practice, along with the strategies needed to transition from students to baccalaureate-level nurses.

Choosing Your Nursing Capstone Topic

When selecting a capstone topic, students should evaluate their interests, strengths, and weaknesses, along with their chosen nursing specialty area. Luther College recommends that students with lower GPAs and weaker nursing skills consider a basic medical-surgical topic. Those with strong clinical skills and high GPAs might choose emergency or intensive care medicine, although some students might prefer outpatient topics, such as clinical services, long-term care, or public health. However, this is simply an example of one school’s approach, and readers should keep in mind that each school sets its own policies and recommendations.

Asking for guidance from faculty, supervisors, preceptors, and fellow students also helps narrow down capstone topics. Advisors can also provide assistance in choosing an appropriate capstone site, helping with questions of geographical location, facility size, patient population, and care delivery model.

Students develop and learn the skills needed to complete their capstones throughout their training. These include organization and time management, knowledge of evidence-based practice, writing, and critical thinking. They also learn to conduct literature searches, identify research designs, and evaluate evidence.

Completing Your Nursing Capstone

Capstone formats and completion times widely vary between programs. Students at Luther College and Purdue University Northwest complete their capstones in 4-5 weeks, while Ferris State University specifies a timeframe of 30 hours of online classes and 90 hours of applied project work. Case Western Reserve University’s capstone spans 10 weeks.

Regardless of the program, most students follow a PICO format for project proposal questions of inquiry: population, intervention, comparison or condition, and outcome.

Some universities allow capstone projects to be completed in teams, in which students develop and implement the project. Capstone components may include defining the project and the team leader’s role, selecting team members, and formulating the project plan.

In addition to the skills previously referenced, such as knowledge of evidence-based care, critical thinking, and effective writing, capstone courses hone leadership and management abilities These include mastering therapeutic communication, applying leadership and management concepts, and developing collaborative relationships and working on multidisciplinary teams.

Presenting Your Nursing Capstone

The capstone process culminates in a paper or presentation that measures students’ skills in communication, information dissemination, and application of evidence-based practice skills. Members of the public may attend.

Utilizing the poster format, students commonly use three panels to illustrate: (1) the background, problem, and purpose; (2) methodology; and (3) 2-3 key findings and implications. Students who present using PowerPoint on a laptop or other device should pay attention to time limits, planning for one slide per minute, and verify that equipment and internet connectivity are available.

Visuals like graphs, figures, and bullet points are more effective than large blocks of text . Students should practice presenting in front of others to ensure that they thoroughly know their content and can answer questions. Backing up a copy of a PowerPoint presentation and printing out copies or transparencies guards against last-minute glitches.

How is a Nursing Capstone Graded?

Capstone grading methods differ between programs, with some issuing letter grades and others using a pass/no pass system. Grades typically hinge on a percentage basis of the project’s written sections, the final proposal, and the presentation. Faculty evaluate how students execute the capstone course objectives, which may include the following:

Students’ presentation skill evaluation criteria include exhibiting thorough preparation and knowledge of the subject matter, clear and concise communication, adherence to any time limits, ability to answer questions and cite references, and persuasiveness.

What is the Difference Between a Nursing Capstone and a Thesis?

Students complete capstones individually or in groups, while thesis projects must be done alone. Capstone project time lengths span between four and 12 weeks, while graduate students work on their thesis projects throughout their 2- to 3-year programs. Graduate thesis courses generally take place over 1-2 semesters to keep students on track.

Finally, capstone topics evaluate current issues and theories; thesis students incorporate existing case studies and literature while exploring and arguing for their own original research. Some schools require students to publish their thesis papers in a healthcare journal.

Difference between a Nursing Capstone Project and a Nursing Thesis

As you get close to the final term and the residency program gets closer, you will most likely either handle a thesis or a capstone project. A typical confusing question nursing students ask is, what’s the difference between a capstone and a thesis in nursing? We have the answers right here for you.

Most nursing programs , both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mandate that the students complete either a nursing thesis or a capstone project.  While a thesis project is meant to focus on a general issue and provide insights to the reader, a capstone thinly focuses on a specific issue, concern, or problem in the realm of nursing.

Also, unlike a thesis that presents a theory or solution, a capstone paper describes the issue using a fact-based approach.

A capstone project is most likely to be assigned from undergraduate to graduate level, whereas a nursing thesis is only assigned to graduate nursing students. Nursing capstone projects are also more focused compared to the theses. One of the reasons is because a capstone demonstrates the understanding of the topic through a detailed analytical approach. On the other hand, a thesis paper for nursing entails the generation of hypothesis or research questions, conducting research, analysis of data, explanation of the findings, and concluding as well as recommending the evidence-based practice.

Even with the differences, both nursing thesis and capstone projects form grounds for evidence-based practice in nursing.

Step 6: Write the Final Report

After collecting and analyzing your data, it’s time to write your final report . This report should include an introduction presenting the problem and research objectives, a literature review, a detailed description of your methodology, findings, discussion, and conclusion. Be sure to adhere to your institution’s formatting guidelines.

Step 7: Presentation

Often, nursing capstone projects also require an oral presentation upon completion. This is your chance to share your work with your peers, faculty, and sometimes even professionals in the field. Ensure to rehearse thoroughly, know your content, and be ready to answer questions.

How To Choose Topic For Capstone Project?

Choosing the right topic ideas for your nursing capstone project is critical to your capstone journey. A well-chosen topic can engage the process and yield more impactful results. Here are some key considerations to help guide you in making this significant decision:

Identify Your Interests and Strengths

Start by reflecting on your nursing education and clinical experience so far. Are there specific areas or specialties that you find particularly engaging? Are you passionate about pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, surgical nursing, or public health? Your capstone project is an excellent opportunity to further explore and specialize in an area you are passionate about. Moreover, working on a topic you love can make the rigorous capstone process more enjoyable and less overwhelming.

Consider the Practical Implications

While personal interest is essential, it’s also crucial to consider the practical implications of your potential topic. Ideally, your capstone project should address a real-world problem in nursing or healthcare and contribute towards improving patient care. Ask yourself, “How will this project potentially impact the nursing field? Will it contribute to better patient outcomes or advance nursing practice?”

Feasibility is Key

Feasibility is another essential consideration when choosing a capstone topic. Given your time frame, resources, and available data, you want to ensure that your selected topic can be thoroughly explored. Ambitious projects are admirable, but remember that it’s better to thoroughly explore a narrower topic than to scratch the surface of a broader one barely.

Seek Feedback

Once you have a potential topic, seek feedback from your instructors, peers, and mentors. They can provide valuable insights, help refine your ideas, and guide you toward a viable and impactful project.

Be Flexible

Finally, remember to stay flexible. As you delve deeper into your topic, you might need to adjust your research question or tweak your project’s focus. That’s perfectly okay and part of the learning process.

DNP Capstone Project

  • Understanding the Basics of a DNP Project
  • How to Develop a DNP Project Using an Evidence-Based Approach
  • Stages and Components of a DNP Project
  • DNP Project Ideas

Sponsored School(s)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice DNP project represents the culmination of your doctoral studies and an opportunity for you to translate your acquired knowledge into practice. It is also the epitome of the practice-focused DNP and an essential part of the integrative practice experience. Preparing your DNP project is an exciting time, as it allows you to lay the groundwork for future scholarship while at the same time giving you a chance to make a potentially meaningful contribution to improving nursing practice and patient outcomes.

In a whitepaper published in August 2015 entitled The Doctor of Nursing Practice: Current Issues and Clarifying Recommendations , the AACN recommended that the DNP Project be referred to simply as the “DNP Project” as a way to distinguish it from final projects in other types of graduate programs. While the term DNP Project is still commonly used, it’s worth noting that schools and professional organizations are in the process of uniformly adopting the term “DNP Project.”

easy bsn capstone project ideas

Here’s what you’ll want to know:

What is a DNP Project?

A DNP project is the umbrella term used to describe a scholarly project with the express purpose of translating evidence into practice. You may also hear it referred to as a final or research DNP project. Your DNP project will reflect your specialization/area of interest, allowing you to delve deep and create a project focused on clinical practice . You will use your DNP project to demonstrate mastery of your advanced nursing specialty.

Fortunately, given the wide breadth of clinical nursing practice, your choices for a DNP project are nearly limitless.

For example, your DNP project may be a practice portfolio that explores the impact or outcomes of nursing practice, or it may be a practice change initiative represented by a program evaluation. It may be a quality improvement project, a consulting project, or the evaluation of a new practice model. It may be a practice topic dissemination, a systemic review, or a manuscript submitted for publication—and that’s just to start.

Although DNP projects may take on various forms, depending on your college/university’s requirements and your area of advanced nursing practice, all DNP projects have three things in common: They all include planning, implementation, and evaluation components.

These components reflect the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) DNP Essentials, which states that a DNP project should be able to successfully integrate some or all of the following into practice:

  • Focus on a change that impacts healthcare outcomes through either direct or indirect care
  • Have a systems (micro-, meso-, or macro-level) or population/aggregate focus
  • Implement the appropriate area of practice
  • Include a plan for sustainability (e.g., financial, systems, or political realities)
  • Include an evaluation of processes and/or outcomes

All projects should be designed so that processes/outcomes can be evaluated to guide practice and policy, and all should provide a foundation for future practice scholarship.

What is the Purpose of the DNP Project?

The goal of the DNP project is to inform the methods you will use to deliver care and educate others in your chosen population/community. You will use the DNP project to demonstrate your ability to lead and practice at the highest level of clinical nursing practice.

You will be asked to integrate a number of skills into your final project:

  • Expertise in reflective practice
  • Expertise in your area of interest
  • Independent practice inquiry (identifying existing problems/needs in nursing practice and/or healthcare systems)
  • The ability to evaluate, translate, and use research and evidence to improve health and quality of care outcomes
  • Organizational and systems leadership skills (developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to improve outcomes for diverse populations and/or communities)
  • Knowledge of advanced healthcare policy, ethics, and law to develop a population-based program based on the best available and current evidence

This is your time to shine, so don’t let the task of choosing a DNP project stress you out.

Using your area of clinical expertise as a springboard, develop your project using an evidence-based process:

  • Formulate a well-developed question: Describe an innovation or clinical inquiry; identify a problem/issue
  • Review the literature to identify evidence-based resources that answer your question: Apply the best evidence from literature
  • Assess the validity of your resources using evidence: Collect data using standard and acceptable methods/tools
  • Apply that evidence: Define outcomes to be measured upon implementation
  • Implement outcomes and/or analyze results: Re-evaluate the application and identify areas for improvement

An example of how one DNP student followed this 5-step evidence-based process to develop a change project with the goal of increasing vaccination among healthcare personnel working in a college:

Step 1. A change project was initiated to increase influenza vaccination among healthcare personnel at a college

Step 2. Barriers to vaccination as well as factors that would help facilitate vaccination were identified using a pre-intervention questionnaire survey

Step 3. Interventions were planned based on the findings of the pre-intervention questionnaire survey

Step 4. Interventions were implemented

Step 5. The effectiveness of the interventions was assessed through a post-intervention survey

An example of how one DNP student followed this 5-step evidence-based process to develop a quality improvement project with the goal of reducing delays in treatment for patients with hand trauma:

Step 1. A quality improvement project was initiated to avoid delays in care for patients with hand trauma

Step 2. Over 2,000 consultations and notes from emergency room and urgent care departments were reviewed to assess adherence to guidelines for treating hand trauma

Step 3. Factors associated with a lack of adherence to treatment guidelines were identified

Step 5. Outcomes were assessed

Questions to Ask

One of the best ways to ensure your DNP project accomplishes your objectives is to ask yourself questions to make sure the project meets the required standards:

  • Does my project focus on individuals, communities, populations, and/or systems?
  • What problems/issues will my project address?
  • Is my DNP project grounded in clinical practice? Will it solve problems or directly inform my practice?
  • Will my project demonstrate mastery of DNP competencies achieved through my doctoral education?
  • Is my project supported by evidence provided through existing literature?
  • Does my project address outcomes associated with patients and healthcare?
  • Does my project provide a foundation for future scholarship in nursing?
  • Executive summary of the project
  • Introduction to the project
  • Description of the problem, how it is defined, and the clinical setting/environment and target environment
  • Data supporting the existence of the problem
  • Description of the creative approach to resolving the problem

The steps required to complete a DNP project will also vary somewhat from one program to the next. Generally speaking, DNP projects include the following stages:

  • Student identifies a focus area for the DNP project.
  • A Capstone Chairperson is selected based on mutual agreement of the student and faculty member and the clinical/scholarly interests and area of expertise of the faculty member. Note: Careful selection of a capstone chairperson is important, as the student and chairperson will develop a plan of study and work closely throughout the process .
  • Student selects a Capstone Committee (usually includes at least three faculty members, one of whom is the Capstone Chairperson).
  • Student earns eligibility to defend the capstone proposal (the proposal must be formally approved by all Committee members).
  • Student works with Capstone Chairperson to develop the proposal, using the Committee in an advisory capacity, as needed.
  • Student prepares and distributes the proposal defense to the Committee members.
  • Student arranges a meeting of the Committee to discuss the proposal and to rule on its acceptability (Committee members ensure the proposal’s feasibility, clinical relevance, and quality.).
  • Upon acceptance of the proposal, the student begins the process of implementing the DNP project (must receive administrative approval for all steps of the project).
  • Student schedules the final defense of the DNP project upon completing the written project and upon getting approval from the Capstone Chairperson.
  • Student distributes the final copy to the Committee members and prepares for the oral defense of the DNP project.
  • Committee members critique the project, identify any changes or additional work to be done, and determine the outcome of the DNP project defense.

What is the Nursing Capstone Project?

A nursing capstone project also referred to as a senior capstone or capstone experience refers to an academic paper that consolidates practical work experience, experimentation, facts to help identify real-world setting issues, and applying skills from class to develop actionable solutions. Capstone projects in nursing can either be inclined towards research or problem-solving.

A nursing capstone paper can be anywhere between 20 pages and 100 pages in length. It should have a compelling argument, exhibit the choice of excellent capstone nursing topics.

Capstone projects are evidence-based practice (EBP) projects and reinforce best practices in different nursing fields. A common focus of the capstone projects in nursing is how to implement technology into practice and effective care delivery. They also revolve around finding solutions for better healthcare management of the staff and staffing issues.

When undertaking a capstone project course, a student works with a practicing professional (a capstone graduate) to help them all the way, offer real-world experience, and advise on the design.

Why Capstone Projects are Important for Nursing Students

There are many goals of a nursing capstone project. These reasons are anchor the need for most students to choose a capstone project over a nursing thesis if given a chance.

  • Understanding Community Needs. Through handling the nursing capstone projects, students identify and address the healthcare needs and issue within their community settings.
  • Capstone projects help define an information problem or opportunity. For instance, if the rates of childhood obesity are high, a capstone project can come up with assured strategies to address the scourge.
  • The nursing capstone project also helps develop an interest in a given specialty. As one works on their capstone projects, they can, in the process, develop a passion for a given area of interest.
  • Capstone projects are a chance to combine work from class with professional practice. As students handle their capstone projects, they can apply various nursing theories, frameworks, models, and ideas to help their professional development.
  • It helps students look at the world from a systems approach point of view. A student who resorts to a nursing capstone project will most likely make a difference in the community, clinical setting of the healthcare department by trying to solve systemic problems in their specific area.

A good capstone project must reflect research ethics, statistics, program theory, leadership and is always preceded by a capstone research proposal.

Given the goals, graduate program capstone projects in nursing might take an entire semester. On the other hand, BSN capstone projects might take ten weeks to two semesters.

Do you need help with writing your nursing capstone project?

Difference between a Nursing Capstone Project and a Nursing Thesis

As you get close to the final term and the residency program gets closer, you will most likely either handle a thesis or a capstone project. A typical confusing question nursing students ask is, what's the difference between a capstone and a thesis in nursing? We have the answers right here for you.

Most nursing programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mandate that the students complete either a nursing thesis or a capstone project.

Useful Tips when Choosing Great Nursing Capstone Ideas

Most nursing students complain that they do not have topics for their nursing capstone projects. One thing most students fail to realize is that they can approach their faculty advisor to help them select a capstone project idea that is relevant to their career goals. Here are some useful tips to help you arrive at your capstone idea of choice for your nursing program:

  • Choose a topic or capstone project idea for nursing that has not been widely explored. This way, you get to chart a path that others who come after you will follow. You will also gain knowledge through research, analysis, and presentation.
  • Choose nursing capstone projects that are interesting to you. If you decide to go with a topic on technology, for instance, be sure that your career goals align with nursing informatics or any tech-related aspect in healthcare.
  • Use the internet to look for the scholarly sources that support your capstone idea of choice. Again, you do not want to choose a nursing capstone idea that does not have credible facts to support your idea. Go for strong nursing capstone ideas supported by theories, frameworks, and facts from scholarly nursing sources.
  • Have a range of nursing capstone ideas. Then after coming up with three-four topic ideas, consult with your capstone project mentor on the best approach to take.

That is why these experts are willing to teach you how to do a capstone project , not to mention help you with it so that you can ace your final year of school.

Choosing Your Capstone Project Ideas and Topics (From Scratch)

how to choose capstone project ideas

Instructors don't always give you the freedom to select your own capstone project idea. However, if you are free to choose one, it is a unique chance to prove yourself.

There are simple steps to choosing a great topic idea and refining it to a proper thesis statement or research question as the case might be.

We already have a detailed guide for this here on our blog , as well as step-by-step guides on how to carry out your capstone project to completion.

In brief, however, this is how you should go about choosing the right capstone project idea.

  • Brainstorm ten or so topics inspired by your course and the material you have covered in the past 4 years. You can get these ideas from your classmates, online sources, or even from what other students have done in the past.
  • Narrow down the topics as guided by the checklist you will find below.
  • With the few remaining ideas, explore the available knowledge for each. This will help you determine how easy or challenging it will be to conduct the intensive research needed for your capstone project. If any of the ideas seems to have sparse published material, discard it. Quantity trumps quality in this case.
  • Find an unsolved problem, a solution that can be improved significantly, a new avenue of exploration, or a completely new solution you feel might work. This will be your "angle" which you will develop in the project. Remember that unlike a thesis, the goal of a capstone project is to provide a practical solution to a real-world problem.
  • Formulate a hypothesis and write down your capstone project proposal , which you will submit to your instructor for approval.

Checklist For a Good Capstone Project

checklist for a good capstone project idea

Will it meet the requirements of your degree satisfactorily? It needs to cover a significant, preferably interdisciplinary portion of your senior studies.

Is it relevant to the profession you intend to join?

Is it interesting and provoking? Choosing a fascinating topic helps capture the interest of your audience and instructor. It also helps to keep you motivated even during the rough patches.

Does it have enough research, data, or supporting material already published? A novel idea may be good at first glance, but you will have a very hard time doing the necessary groundwork. The idea needs to be doable with the available resources.

I'm new to NICU nursing, and hoping to complete my senior capstone project for my BSN in the NICU. I have to implement something evidence based on my unit. I was wondering if anyone might be able to point me in the direction of new research, evidence based practice, or interesting ideas that you think should be implemented into NICU practice?

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Can you give more specifics? Do you have to actually implement something in a hospital-based unit? Will you need IRB approval?

But yes, you should start by getting in contact with the manager/QI manager/educator of the NICU and see what their needs are.

slw326

I agree that you should see what the needs of that specific unit are, but can give you some suggestions on what we have looked into recently in our 44-bed level IV NICU:

- Using donor breast milk (a GREAT topic, but can be difficult and expensive to implement)

- Promoting kangaroo care, especially to include dads!

- Midline head positioning in babies less than 1500 grams to reduce the incidence of IVH

Also with the worsening opioid crisis it could be interesting to pick some non-pharmacologic interventions to try to reduce NAS scores in withdrawal babies.

Best of luck!

What are the Benefits of an RN to BSN Program?

5 Benefits of Pursuing an RN to BSN Program

Nurses are one of, if not the most essential part of the healthcare system and industry, providing care to patients and acting as patient advocates throughout their journeys. And the employment rate for registered nurses is expected to grow six percent by 2032 , resulting in an average of 193,100 job openings per year.

With a faster-than-average employment growth rate, it’s no surprise that current and aspiring registered nurses enroll in Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) degree programs.

Below, we’ll unpack five benefits of an RN to BSN track.

What is an RN to BSN program?

RN to BSN programs are flexible degrees designed for already licensed nurses who have completed an Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) .

These nurses, often looking to expand their career, skill set, and educational mobility, now qualify for degree advancement and advanced, accelerated education through a RN to BSN degree program.

Students in these programs must complete credits in general education, basic nursing, upper-level nursing, leadership, management, community health, and more. They must also complete a capstone project to graduate.

Typical RN to BSN courses in an online degree program include:

  • Community Health
  • Nursing and Healthcare Informatics
  • Nursing Theory and Evidence-Based Practice
  • Population and Global Health
  • Quality, Safety/Health Policy

While RN to BSN program length will vary depending on the school and the number of transfer credits a student has, many students complete their RN to BSN degrees in a short period of time. Students should also look for in-person or online programs where they can transfer their previously earned nursing credits from other institutions, helping to limit the amount of time needed to complete their degree.

For example, at University of Bridgeport, students can transfer up to ninety credits from an accredited institution and complete the online RN to BSN track program in one academic year plus a summer semester.

What are the benefits of an RN to BSN program?

There are many benefits of completing an RN to BSN program, including receiving a higher pay scale, climbing the career ladder, gaining a comprehensive knowledge base, having more job opportunities, and improving patient outcomes.

Higher pay scale

Opportunity for a high annual salary is one of the many reasons why current and aspiring registered nurses enroll in Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree programs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), registered nurses make a median annual salary of $81,220 , with the highest ten percent earning more than $129,400.

Furthermore, employers are willing and more likely to pay individuals with advanced degrees more money as they recognize and value candidates’ additional knowledge and expertise.

Climbing the career ladder

RN to BSN degrees also lead to more job opportunities, allowing candidates to apply for management positions that give them more responsibility as well as higher salaries.

Graduates are more qualified and equipped to conduct research, manage care teams, and serve as health educators.

Many RNs with this degree also find increased autonomy in decision-making and pursue positions such as nurse managers, nursing directors, and clinical research coordinators.

Comprehensive knowledge base

While an associate degree in Nursing (ADN) provides a good foundation and can be completed in a short amount of time, a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) degree offers a deeper understanding of the field.

Students gain advanced training in their chosen specialty and participate in more clinical hours under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Graduates of these programs also have the following learning outcomes :

  • Deliver patient-centered care: Applying the nursing process with the latest evidence-based practices
  • Embrace innovation: Utilizing technology and research to improve patient outcomes
  • Lead effectively: Demonstrating strong leadership and management skills to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care

More job opportunities

Those who have completed their RN to BSN track go on to senior positions, including nurse managers, nursing directors, and different leadership roles, as well as research positions and specializations at an institution or university.

They also find work in office and administrative roles, as well as specialties at clinics and other healthcare settings.

Careers include:

  • Case management nurse
  • Clinical nurse specialist
  • Clinical research nurse
  • Nurse educator
  • Nursing director
  • Nurse manager
  • Public health nurse
  • Quality assurance or improvement coordinator

See how a BSN from UB can open doors to new opportunities and leadership roles.

Improved patient outcomes.

Nurses with their ADN degree provide exceptional care, but RN to BSN programs elevate the quality of service these nurses offer.

The advanced coursework prepares nurses with a deeper understanding of public health, evidence-based practices, and the latest technological advancements, making them more attractive to employers.

Their training and education lead to an enhanced ability to handle complex healthcare situations arising from:

  • Growing healthcare complexities
  • Increased demand for collaborative and community care
  • Legislative changes
  • Needs of an aging population
