Jada Tamil Movie Review: A Confused Plot Made Bearable By Great Editing And Sound
Cast : Kathir , Roshni Prakash, Yogi Babu , Kishore
Director : Kumaran
Music Director : Sam CS
Though I’m still trying to figure out which genre out of the multiple ones adopted in the film was justified, I was glad that after a long time I saw some decent football sequences without the unnecessary usage of VFX or CG in a film originally touted to be a sports drama.
It didn’t involve trick shots to showcase the ball travelling through the air, nor did it miss out on the excitement that prevails during such matches. Although it did miss out on a strong and meaningful screenplay towards the end.
Jada (Kathir) is an exceptionally skilled street footballer from Pulliyanthope. He decides to participate in a seven’s no-rule football match hosted by the St. Thomas Mount football club along with his team to seek justice for his coach Sethu (Kishore) who dies unexpectedly in one of the ruthless matches.
The film should’ve just stuck to this plot without the infiltration of a senseless horror plot. It seemed like the director just wanted to add some supernatural elements to the narrative to keep up with the ‘trend’. So he added a character that does little in the film, a few dialogues and intertwined it with a random death in the film. It felt like three stories in one – Sports, Horror and Revenge Drama.
(Spoilers Begin)
When the entirety of Chennai seems to be celebrating Kishore for the coach that he portrays himself to be, his hometown Sathankulam is conveniently unaware of him, his family or even their death.
In fact, the semifinals and finals of the tournament are held at the town only in veneration of the great player. But there is not one hoarding or even a mention of Sethu throughout the town sequences.
The two halves of the movie have followed two completely different narratives. If one were to walk in during the second half and watch the movie, it would make complete sense to them. While first halves usually aid in the development of the story besides building the characters, this first half sought to educate us about how a seven’s match works which is of little relevance in the second half.
There also seems to be no rapport between the friends or between Kishore and Kathir, making the climax, which in itself was corny, hard to buy. If not for Richard Kevin’s racy cuts complemented by Sam CS’s background score (‘Apdi Paakathadi’ song works well too), the film would’ve easily lost one’s attention midway.
Kathir proves himself once again with a great performance after Pariyerum Perumal . Yogi Babu excels and garnered laughs and claps at several instances for his humour in the show I watched.
I only wish they had avoided the “template” of ridiculing the actor’s looks followed by a moment where he proves himself. Roshni Prakash, the heroine supposedly, is used like every Kollywood heroine in recent times. Even when she appears, she fails to emote.
Arun Prasath, Nishanth, and Rajkumar who play Kathir’s friends didn’t have much scope for performance although Gautham, who plays someone that is deaf-mute was given the spotlight. Just when you expect his to be a role of substance, the second half arrives to shatter your expectations. Kishore could’ve also been used with more caution.
Jada would serve as a clear example of how the post-production phase can spruce up a weak plot and hold it together. Right from the addition of dialogues in dubbing to restrained usage of CG to skillful editing and impactful sound, everything made the film bearable.

Jada Movie Cast & Crew
Jada is about a young and talented football player who makes his team participate in a risky non-regulated 7’s tournament, to seek revenge for a dead football hero from their locality. We have seen several films that talk about National level football tournaments before but nothing so far on such non-regulated tournaments. So, the concept, on the whole, looks interesting and even the introduction of the film shows great promise. It did seem like a solid plot up until the interval point but the second half looked completely different. The research gone into establishing the 7’s sport needs to be lauded but the execution part wasn’t up to the mark. One might expect more reasons for us to believe that this 7’s sport is menacing enough to be banned. The director seems to have divided his film into two parts – the first half delving on establishing the sport which works in his favour and the second half which travels more like a forced horror film, which spoils all the hard work done in the initial half. Even the character graph of the protagonist wasn’t sketched properly. It looked like nobody in the film knew what they actually wanted. None of their actions make any justice. The plot had the potential to be woven into an interesting tale, had only the director made an attempt to impart a focused approach in the second half. Not just that the story takes various detours in its path but even the scenes and dialogues get soggy and the concept flounders. The connection of the audience with the characters does not happen. The love track that comes once in a while doesn’t make an impact nor was it convincing on any level. Unfortunately, there is no zing in their love and the duo appears very casual about the whole thing. Sam CS as usual hits the chord right with his re-recording. Even the song that Anirudh sings sounded quite soothing and fresh. Apart from that, there is nothing much to write about the technical aspects of the film. Although Jada doesn’t have a great script it does engage you to a large extent. This film once again brings to the fore the performer in Kishore and if there is some takeaway in the film, it is his scenes that come during the flashback. Kathir has done his part well. He has been choosing his scripts properly and giving his best each and every time. You can see him raising the bar constantly and this film will show him in another dimension, that we have not seen before. Roshini Prakash looks too fancy to be shown as a girl living in a northern Chennai sub-urban locality. The scene between coach Elango and his son was heart-warming. There are a couple more moments that will connect with the audience on a personal level. Those are the positive sides of Jada.
Verdict: An interesting first half and a confused second half make Jada a middling affair!

Jada Movie Review: A generic, supernatural revenge-drama masquerading as a sports film
Rating: ( 2 / 5).
Jada , which tells yet another story about an underdog football team, begins with an animated stretch that traces the origin of football to medieval Europe. These parts, which hint at the absence of traditional rules and the inherently barbaric nature of the game, make us sit up in anticipation of a gritty tale. And it begins well enough, with a local football match, which, at first glance, appears to be the soccer-equivalent of our modest gully-cricket. Two local teams seem to be fighting it out in an unremarkable rhythm, very reminiscent of a bet match taking place at a Corporation playground near your home. But, Kathir, who plays the protagonist, Jada, and the captain of one of the warring teams, gets an introduction shot befitting a national-level champion. Perhaps, he's destined to be one, you think. But then, Yogi Babu too gets a rousing opening. "How can this fat guy run, let alone kick the ball?" someone from the opposition camp wonders. The man responds with a carefully-choreographed penalty kick. Another team member, who has a weakness for girls, rushes to the ground straight out of a hook-up. The others just exist. That's the most we learn about this team for the entirety of the film. Jada's character, in fact, doesn't even have the inkling of an arc, let alone the makings of a hero's journey.
Director: Kumaran
Cast: Kathir, Yogi Babu, Kishore
Stories of triumphant underdogs, especially in sports, are, by their nature, ripe with cliches. The brusque coach who gives out tough love. The supporting partner who cheers from the stands. The friend who makes the ultimate sacrifice. The bumpy road to the finals, where our team gets pitted against a daunting adversary. The stirring speech in the end that revives the sagging spirits when failure seems inevitable. A smart filmmaker, however, will paint these 'must-haves' in distinct shades and keep things interesting. Unfortunately, debutant Kumaran doesn't quite manage this in Jada .
Jada, who really is talented in football, wants to play a tournament organised by the villain, for avenging the on-field murder of his mentor. His coach, on the other hand, wants him to stay out of trouble, and get settled in life. This is not a bad one-liner. But, what must have have been a high-stakes emotional drama ends up as a dull genre-bender, because of the uninspired writing, which fails to imbue any shades to the characters.
Apart from the obvious joblessness, there's nothing that makes the seven players stand out. We get an interesting character in the form of a deaf-and-mute player, who is revealed to be the coach's son. And yet another, in the form of an injured football star, who sticks around with the coach, just because he can't imagine life without the sport. But these characters are not fleshed out. When this injured guy gets to feel the high of a 'coach', we are supposed to cheer for him. When the coach's son breaks down on hearing that his long-indifferent father has gifted him a shoe, we are meant to feel his tears of joy. These moments of high on paper are supposed to hit us hard, but they don’t. They fall flat, just like the rest of the first half. They just exist as ideas and plot points. These needed to be fleshed out into scenes with pay-offs. The characters needed to be followed up, with regard to their motivations.
The thing that hurts Jada the most, however, is the absence of a worthy opponent. It does not always have to be a formidable team to beat. It could be a stern father who favours studies and forbids football, or some other internal conflict that the lead needs to overcome — something that would make us root for the underdogs. Nothing of this sort exists in Jada . The two main antagonists are so cartoonishly evil that at times, they make us laugh.
To makes matters worse, all the teams that Jada beats to reach the semifinals seem uniformly populated by players with the craft and maturity of high-schoolers. The matches themselves offer nothing new. There are neither clever game-tactics nor emotional highs. They just... happen. At times, they are hyper-edited to give the illusion of thrills — but there's not a single original manoeuvre that makes us go 'wow'. All these, including the really bad spatial choreography in the games, leave us indifferent to the fate of the players. We can't see them as a 'team', let alone an underdog team.
Post the interval, the film moves into the horror-thriller genre with better success. Several jump-scares follow, with a few actually managing to spook us. We do guess the presence of a vengeful spirit, but the film does well by playing with those tropes, so that we start feeling the unease. Two scenes in particular — one involving a locked car, and another a bicycle — play out with brilliant results. I guess it also has to do with events gradually becoming so preposterous that the sheer whatever-next factor pulls us through.
The film abruptly finds its resolution, but the questions don't. What happened to the coach's son? What's with the heroine, who appears for five minutes in the first half? What happened to the other bad guy? Or in broader terms, what does it say about a film, when you walk in expecting a gritty sports drama and come out taking solace in the not-so-bad horror thrills?

Jada movie review: Neither ‘scores’ nor scares
Jada movie review: don't experiment much with two genres that never go hand-in-hand..
Jada movie cast: Kathir, Kishore, Yogi Babu Jada movie director: Kumaran Jada movie rating: 1.5 stars
Pariyerum Perumal (2018) came without expectations and worked big time for Kathir. Its success made him star in big- budget films like Bigil. Kathir’s latest release, Jada, features him in the role of a football player. Though the film revolves around ‘sevens’, a form of football, it takes a detour post-intermission. What follows is a ghost story and unconvincing flashback.
A few minutes into Jada, we are shown the history of sevens, and how the game evolved. Jada’s (Kathir) coach wants him to take football seriously so that he could play in an elevens team, but Jada is adamant that he plays ‘sevens’, which has no set rules. Kumaran justifies why Jada is particular about that. It’s for Sethu (Kishore), his mentor, a footballer-turned-coach, who Jada looked up to.
Jada begins with “fun”. Yogi Babu cracks jokes, but the humour falls flat. There’s a needless shift from the playground to the players’ personal space in a not-so-good way. You get a scene where a footballer rushes to the ground with literally a tight underwear, after having sex. You are expected to laugh at the situation. Why is it necessary for a film like Jada—is my question. No, this doesn’t “commercialise” the film, but, a desperate attempt to pander to the sex-deprived male audience. You get a romantic track involving Roshni and Kathir, which is useless. It looks like we-have-a-heroine-because-this-is-how-it-is.
Jada, in particular, becomes unbearable after interval. Kathir’s character and teammates visit a village for a tournament, but you get spooky things on the screen—a haunted house, a scary-looking hand, weird dolls, and a dog that won’t bark whatsoever. (Yes, you read it right). Of course, you are being told why, towards the end. Would any sports film, set against football, have elements of a horror film? It’s not about the mix of genres, but the style of writing and how the narrative moves forward. That’s why you refuse to buy the tonal shift in the second half. You don’t see why Jada needed such treatment in the first place.
Jada has too many characters that confuse you. Had the film focused on the lives of the residents and how they adapted to playing the game, Jada would have been a better film. But what we get is a shallow story, mounted on sevens football.
Kumaran neither explores the camaraderie between the players nor Jada’s relationship with his girlfriend. Their “romantic angle” is anything but real. Jada’s love interest doesn’t show up to a temple because she was chumming. It’s not about the period, but how the scene has been conceived and executed. It’s plain sick. Also, another friend character, (supposedly a footballer), is on a phone call and has a conversation with a woman, who says, “date thalli pochchu”. What is Kumaran’s obsession with menstruation? I am curious to know.
Barring Kathir’s acting, nothing lingers long after you exit the theatre. The lives of the players, the “moments” (since it’s a sports film), nothing gets registered in your head. Further, Jada doesn’t have a proper screenplay, and that’s where the problem lies. Maybe, Kumaran had so much to tell and doesn’t know how. A well-intentioned film always finds a way to connect with the audience, but here, the writing goes haywire. Most of the scenes look forced, and life-less. As an audience, you feel zero empathy for the characters. Even a final football match scene looks like a practice session. There’s no tension or the craze for football or the zest in players to win. Had Kumaran narrated Jada better, it would have been a decent heart-warming story, if not an effectively-made sports drama. Well, Kumaran might have attempted to make Sudani From Nigeria-like film, but ends up with a frustrating supernatural revenge-drama.

Jada is a confused mess that lacks a proper script and narration and is neither a sports drama nor a horror thriller and falls between two stools.
Language: Tamil
One of the fastest rising stars with potential in Tamil cinema is Kathir. His choices in scripts have been perfect so far, such as the brilliant Pariyerum Perumal, and a lot was riding on his new film as a solo hero, Jada . There were pre-release reports that Kathir had taken a lot of time and energy to prepare for the football-based sports film. Alas, debutant director Kumaran’s film misses the goalpost by a mile.
It starts off promisingly with a voiceover, which tells us how the game evolved over the years in the North Madras area. Later in a typical Tamil youth film style, the hero character Jada (Kathir) and his friends like Yogi Babu are introduced, while they are getting ready for a big football tournament. His coach Elango wants him to focus more on the game, since he has the potential to be selected for the national Santosh Trophy team. But Jada prefers to play in Sevens football, a more aggressive and violent form of the game. The driving force is to avenge the death of his childhood mentor Sethu (Kishore), who died in a Sevens tournament.
After years, the local politicians of the area he stays in are planning a Sevens tournament, but police refuse to sanction a permit. So the tournament is shifted out to a nearby village, and Jada and his team plan to participate and win the cup despite objections from the coach. From the interval block, the sports film changes genre and turns into a horror film, as the director tries to marry different genres, and virtually end up with egg on his face. The audiences may feel cheated and question how a football-based film suddenly can turn into a horror revenge drama.
The film has been made without a proper script, as there are logical goof-ups, and the ending is compromised. Like in so many other ‘youth’ films, there are plenty of scenes extolling the virtues of friendship via drinking scenes. A love angle is thrown in just for the sake of having a heroine and a song. Why is it mandatory to have a heroine figure in every Tamil film, even if there’s little to do for her? It would be interesting to note that one of the biggest hits of the year, Kaithi, did not have any love interest for the hero. The heroine (Roshini Prakash) here has virtually one scene and disappears in the second half, other than a phone call post interval.
For the first time, Kathir’s choice of a script has gone so wrong, though he tries best to salvage it in the second half. There is not even one single scene for him to show his acting calibre as the character lacks depth. Yogi Babu’s comedy falls flat and other actors just do not fit the bill. Technically, there is nothing much to commend other than some well shot football scenes in the beginning. Jada is a confused mess that lacks a proper script and narration and is neither a sports drama nor a horror thriller and falls between two stools.

Jada is a footballer. He and his friends are getting ready to take part in a football match and lift the cup. At the same time, a couple of local groups organize a football tournament. Jada and his friends decide to take part in that and request their coach. Although the coach denies, Jada convinced him that he takes the responsibility that he and his teammates will return unhurt. When they went to the village to attend the football match, they had to face a different challenge. What was that? Did they return, safe? Watch the film to know the rest.
Star Performance
Kathir always fits well in the role and he did justice to the role, Jada assigned to him. Roshni has nothing big to do. Yogi Babu’s comedy didn’t work out much.
Started as a sports genre, the director moved it towards the horror genre. Although he tried to bring some connection to both the genres, it didn’t work out, as his explanation is not gripping. The screenplay didn't have strong elements and the scenes are predictable too. The characters are not appropriately penned and they lack something substantial. The antagonist didn’t have much to do, as his character is not designed powerfully. The visuals are excellent and the music is good.
What’s There?
- Performance of Kathir is a plus
- Visuals and music are impressive
What’s Not There?
- Both the genres didn’t get synched
- The screenplay is not strong and the execution should have been better
The film started with the sports genre and traveled through the horror genre. If you have no films to watch or if you like Kathir’s natural performance, then you could try this film.
