Here are 6 examples of Social Media Essays:

The Impact of Social Media on Relationships and Communication

Introduction:.

The way we share information and build relationships has evolved as a direct result of the prevalence of social media in our daily lives. The influence of social media on interpersonal connections and conversation is a hot topic. Although social media has many positive effects, such as bringing people together regardless of physical proximity and making communication quicker and more accessible, it also has a dark side that can affect interpersonal connections and dialogue.

Positive Effects:

Connecting People Across Distances

One of social media's most significant benefits is its ability to connect individuals across long distances. People can use social media platforms to interact and stay in touch with friends and family far away. People can now maintain intimate relationships with those they care about, even when physically separated.

Improved Communication Speed and Efficiency

Additionally, the proliferation of social media sites has accelerated and simplified communication. Thanks to instant messaging, users can have short, timely conversations rather than lengthy ones via email. Furthermore, social media facilitates group communication, such as with classmates or employees, by providing a unified forum for such activities.

Negative Effects:

Decreased Face-to-Face Communication

The decline in in-person interaction is one of social media's most pernicious consequences on interpersonal connections and dialogue. People's reliance on digital communication over in-person contact has increased along with the popularity of social media. Face-to-face interaction has suffered as a result, which has adverse effects on interpersonal relationships and the development of social skills.

Decreased Emotional Intimacy

Another adverse effect of social media on relationships and communication is decreased emotional intimacy. Digital communication lacks the nonverbal cues and facial expressions critical in building emotional connections with others. This can make it more difficult for people to develop close and meaningful relationships, leading to increased loneliness and isolation.

Increased Conflict and Miscommunication

Finally, social media can also lead to increased conflict and miscommunication. The anonymity and distance provided by digital communication can lead to misunderstandings and hurtful comments that might not have been made face-to-face. Additionally, social media can provide a platform for cyberbullying , which can have severe consequences for the victim's mental health and well-being.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the impact of social media on relationships and communication is a complex issue with both positive and negative effects. While social media platforms offer many benefits, such as connecting people across distances and enabling faster and more accessible communication, they also have a dark side that can negatively affect relationships and communication. It is up to individuals to use social media responsibly and to prioritize in-person communication in their relationships and interactions with others.

The Role of Social Media in the Spread of Misinformation and Fake News

Social media has revolutionized the way information is shared and disseminated. However, the ease and speed at which data can be spread on social media also make it a powerful tool for spreading misinformation and fake news. Misinformation and fake news can seriously affect public opinion, influence political decisions, and even cause harm to individuals and communities.

The Pervasiveness of Misinformation and Fake News on Social Media

Misinformation and fake news are prevalent on social media platforms, where they can spread quickly and reach a large audience. This is partly due to the way social media algorithms work, which prioritizes content likely to generate engagement, such as sensational or controversial stories. As a result, false information can spread rapidly and be widely shared before it is fact-checked or debunked.

The Influence of Social Media on Public Opinion

Social media can significantly impact public opinion, as people are likelier to believe the information they see shared by their friends and followers. This can lead to a self-reinforcing cycle, where misinformation and fake news are spread and reinforced, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

The Challenge of Correcting Misinformation and Fake News

Correcting misinformation and fake news on social media can be a challenging task. This is partly due to the speed at which false information can spread and the difficulty of reaching the same audience exposed to the wrong information in the first place. Additionally, some individuals may be resistant to accepting correction, primarily if the incorrect information supports their beliefs or biases.

In conclusion, the function of social media in disseminating misinformation and fake news is complex and urgent. While social media has revolutionized the sharing of information, it has also made it simpler for false information to propagate and be widely believed. Individuals must be accountable for the information they share and consume, and social media firms must take measures to prevent the spread of disinformation and fake news on their platforms.

The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health and Well-Being

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of people around the world using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay connected with others and access information. However, while social media has many benefits, it can also negatively affect mental health and well-being.

Comparison and Low Self-Esteem

One of the key ways that social media can affect mental health is by promoting feelings of comparison and low self-esteem. People often present a curated version of their lives on social media, highlighting their successes and hiding their struggles. This can lead others to compare themselves unfavorably, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Cyberbullying and Online Harassment

Another way that social media can negatively impact mental health is through cyberbullying and online harassment. Social media provides a platform for anonymous individuals to harass and abuse others, leading to feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression.

Social Isolation

Despite its name, social media can also contribute to feelings of isolation. At the same time, people may have many online friends but need more meaningful in-person connections and support. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression.

Addiction and Overuse

Finally, social media can be addictive, leading to overuse and negatively impacting mental health and well-being. People may spend hours each day scrolling through their feeds, neglecting other important areas of their lives, such as work, family, and self-care.

In sum, social media has positive and negative consequences on one's psychological and emotional well-being. Realizing this, and taking measures like reducing one's social media use, reaching out to loved ones for help, and prioritizing one's well-being, are crucial. In addition, it's vital that social media giants take ownership of their platforms and actively encourage excellent mental health and well-being.

The Use of Social Media in Political Activism and Social Movements

Social media has recently become increasingly crucial in political action and social movements. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have given people new ways to express themselves, organize protests, and raise awareness about social and political issues.

Raising Awareness and Mobilizing Action

One of the most important uses of social media in political activity and social movements has been to raise awareness about important issues and mobilize action. Hashtags such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, for example, have brought attention to sexual harassment and racial injustice, respectively. Similarly, social media has been used to organize protests and other political actions, allowing people to band together and express themselves on a bigger scale.

Connecting with like-minded individuals

A second method in that social media has been utilized in political activity and social movements is to unite like-minded individuals. Through social media, individuals can join online groups, share knowledge and resources, and work with others to accomplish shared objectives. This has been especially significant for geographically scattered individuals or those without access to traditional means of political organizing.

Challenges and Limitations

As a vehicle for political action and social movements, social media has faced many obstacles and restrictions despite its many advantages. For instance, the propagation of misinformation and fake news on social media can impede attempts to disseminate accurate and reliable information. In addition, social media corporations have been condemned for censorship and insufficient protection of user rights.

In conclusion, social media has emerged as a potent instrument for political activism and social movements, giving voice to previously unheard communities and galvanizing support for change. Social media presents many opportunities for communication and collaboration. Still, users and institutions must be conscious of the risks and limitations of these tools to promote their responsible and productive usage.

The Potential Privacy Concerns Raised by Social Media Use and Data Collection Practices

With billions of users each day on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, social media has ingrained itself into every aspect of our lives. While these platforms offer a straightforward method to communicate with others and exchange information, they also raise significant concerns over data collecting and privacy. This article will examine the possible privacy issues posed by social media use and data-gathering techniques.

Data Collection and Sharing

The gathering and sharing of personal data are significant privacy issues brought up by social media use. Social networking sites gather user data, including details about their relationships, hobbies, and routines. This information is made available to third-party businesses for various uses, such as marketing and advertising. This can lead to serious concerns about who has access to and uses our personal information.

Lack of Control Over Personal Information

The absence of user control over personal information is a significant privacy issue brought up by social media usage. Social media makes it challenging to limit who has access to and how data is utilized once it has been posted. Sensitive information may end up being extensively disseminated and may be used maliciously as a result.

Personalized Marketing

Social media companies utilize the information they gather about users to target them with adverts relevant to their interests and usage patterns. Although this could be useful, it might also cause consumers to worry about their privacy since they might feel that their personal information is being used without their permission. Furthermore, there are issues with the integrity of the data being used to target users and the possibility of prejudice based on individual traits.

Government Surveillance

Using social media might spark worries about government surveillance. There are significant concerns regarding privacy and free expression when governments in some nations utilize social media platforms to follow and monitor residents.

In conclusion, social media use raises significant concerns regarding data collecting and privacy. While these platforms make it easy to interact with people and exchange information, they also gather a lot of personal information, which raises questions about who may access it and how it will be used. Users should be aware of these privacy issues and take precautions to safeguard their personal information, such as exercising caution when choosing what details to disclose on social media and keeping their information sharing with other firms to a minimum.

The Ethical and Privacy Concerns Surrounding Social Media Use And Data Collection

Our use of social media to communicate with loved ones, acquire information, and even conduct business has become a crucial part of our everyday lives. The extensive use of social media does, however, raise some ethical and privacy issues that must be resolved. The influence of social media use and data collecting on user rights, the accountability of social media businesses, and the need for improved regulation are all topics that will be covered in this article.

Effect on Individual Privacy:

Social networking sites gather tons of personal data from their users, including delicate information like search history, location data, and even health data. Each user's detailed profile may be created with this data and sold to advertising or used for other reasons. Concerns regarding the privacy of personal information might arise because social media businesses can use this data to target users with customized adverts.

Additionally, individuals might need to know how much their personal information is being gathered and exploited. Data breaches or the unauthorized sharing of personal information with other parties may result in instances where sensitive information is exposed. Users should be aware of the privacy rules of social media firms and take precautions to secure their data.

Responsibility of Social Media Companies:

Social media firms should ensure that they responsibly and ethically gather and use user information. This entails establishing strong security measures to safeguard sensitive information and ensuring users are informed of what information is being collected and how it is used.

Many social media businesses, nevertheless, have come under fire for not upholding these obligations. For instance, the Cambridge Analytica incident highlighted how Facebook users' personal information was exploited for political objectives without their knowledge. This demonstrates the necessity of social media corporations being held responsible for their deeds and ensuring that they are safeguarding the security and privacy of their users.

Better Regulation Is Needed

There is a need for tighter regulation in this field, given the effect, social media has on individual privacy as well as the obligations of social media firms. The creation of laws and regulations that ensure social media companies are gathering and using user information ethically and responsibly, as well as making sure users are aware of their rights and have the ability to control the information that is being collected about them, are all part of this.

Additionally, legislation should ensure that social media businesses are held responsible for their behavior, for example, by levying fines for data breaches or the unauthorized use of personal data. This will provide social media businesses with a significant incentive to prioritize their users' privacy and security and ensure they are upholding their obligations.

In conclusion, social media has fundamentally changed how we engage and communicate with one another, but this increased convenience also raises several ethical and privacy issues. Essential concerns that need to be addressed include the effect of social media on individual privacy, the accountability of social media businesses, and the requirement for greater regulation to safeguard user rights. We can make everyone's online experience safer and more secure by looking more closely at these issues.

In conclusion, social media is a complex and multifaceted topic that has recently captured the world's attention. Why Write a Social Media Essay

In a world buzzing with hashtags, filters, and the constant hum of notifications, the idea of sitting down to craft an essay about social media might seem as out of place as a cassette tape in a streaming era. Yet, there's something oddly therapeutic, almost rebellious, about pausing in the midst of 280-character wisdom to delve deeper into the why behind our digital existence.

So, what is social media essay, and what's the purpose of writing it? Well, it's more than just an exercise in intellectual curiosity. It's a personal journey, a reflective pause in the ceaseless scroll. While writing the essay, we gain the power to articulate the intangible, to breathe life into the pixels that dance across our screens. It's an opportunity to make sense of the chaos, to find meaning in the memes, and perhaps, in the process, to uncover a bit more about ourselves in this digital wilderness.

Let's face it - our online lives are a fast-paced carousel of memes, viral challenges, and carefully curated selfies. So, why bother wrestling with words and paragraphs in a world where brevity is king? The answer lies in the art of unraveling the digital tapestry that envelops us.

There's a magic in articulating the dance between the profound and the mundane that occurs within the confines of our screens. An essay becomes a lens, focusing our attention on the subtleties of social media dynamics – the inside jokes that become global phenomena, the ripple effect of a well-timed retweet, and the silent conversations unfolding in the comment sections.

6 Key Tips for Crafting a Social Media Essay

Now that we've set sail into the realm of essays on the digital landscape, it's only fair to equip ourselves with a few trusty tools for the journey. Think of these tips as your compass, helping you navigate the sometimes choppy, often unpredictable waters of crafting an essay on social media.

  • Embrace Your Authentic Voice: Just like your favorite Instagram filter can't hide the real you, your essay should reflect your genuine thoughts and feelings. Don't be afraid to let your unique voice shine through – whether it's witty, contemplative, or a delightful blend of both.
  • Dive into the Details: Social media isn't just about the grand gestures; it's the small, often unnoticed details that weave the most compelling narratives. Explore the minutiae of your online experiences – the peculiar hashtags, the quirky bios, and the unexpected connections that leave a lasting imprint.
  • Craft Your Hashtag Haiku: Much like poetry, brevity can be your ally in social media essays. Think of hashtags as haikus – succinct, impactful, and capable of conveying a universe of meaning in just a few characters. Choose them wisely.
  • Engage with the Comments Section: The comments section is the lively pub where digital conversations unfold. Dive in, clink glasses, and engage with the diverse perspectives swirling around. It's in these interactions that the real magic happens – where ideas collide, evolve, and sometimes, transform.
  • Navigate the Memescape: Memes are the folklore of the digital age, carrying tales of humor, irony, and cultural resonance. Don't shy away from exploring the memescape in your essay. Unravel the layers, decipher the symbolism, and appreciate the humor that often holds up a mirror to society.
  • Be Mindful of the Clickbait Pitfalls: While clickbait might be the flashy neon sign on the digital highway, it's essential to tread carefully. Ensure your essay isn't just a sensational headline but a thoughtful exploration that goes beyond the surface.

Form an Outline

Now that we've acknowledged the importance of structure in your essay, the next step is to build a solid roadmap. Think of it like planning a road trip; you wouldn't hit the highway without a map or GPS, right? Similarly, creating an outline for your essay gives you a clear direction and ensures your thoughts flow smoothly.

So, whether you decide to order an essay online or tackle it yourself, here's a simple way to go about it:

Introduction (Where You Start):

  • Briefly introduce the topic.
  • State your social media essay thesis or main idea.
  • Example: 'Let's begin by introducing the impact of social media on modern communication, focusing on its role in shaping opinions and fostering connections.'

Body Paragraphs (The Journey):

  • Each paragraph should cover a specific social media essay argument and point.
  • Use examples or evidence to support your ideas.
  • Example: 'The first aspect we'll explore is how social media amplifies voices. For instance, hashtags like #ClimateAction mobilize a global audience around environmental issues.'

Transitions (Smooth Turns):

  • Guide your readers from one point to the next.
  • Ensure a logical flow between paragraphs.
  • Example: 'Having discussed the amplification of voices, let's now shift our focus to the influence of social media in spreading information.'

Counter Arguments (Addressing Detours):

  • Acknowledge different perspectives.
  • Counter Arguments with evidence or reasoning.
  • Example: 'While social media can be a powerful tool for connectivity, critics argue that it also contributes to the spread of misinformation. Let's explore this counterargument and analyze its validity.'

Conclusion (The Destination):

  • Summarize your main points.
  • Restate your thesis and leave a lasting impression.
  • Example: 'In conclusion, social media serves as both a bridge and a battleground of ideas. Understanding its nuances is crucial in navigating this digital landscape.'

Creating an outline for your essay not only streamlines the writing process but also ensures your readers embark on a clear and organized journey through your insights on social media. If you're exploring more options, you might even want to buy thesis for more convenience.

Make a Social Media Essay Introduction

Begin your introduction by presenting a concise overview of the key theme or topic you're addressing. Clearly state the main purpose or argument of your essay, giving readers a roadmap for what to expect. Integrate social media essay hooks like a relevant statistic, quote, or provocative question to capture attention.

For instance, if your essay is about the impact of social media on personal relationships, you might start by mentioning a statistic on the percentage of couples who met online.

Social Media Essay Body Paragraph

Structure each social media essay body paragraph around a specific aspect of your chosen topic. Start with a clear topic sentence that encapsulates the main idea of the paragraph. Provide concrete examples, data, or case studies to support your points and strengthen your argument. Maintain a logical flow between paragraphs by using effective transitions.

If your essay focuses on the positive effects of social media on business marketing, dedicate a paragraph to showcasing successful campaigns and how they leveraged different platforms.

Social Media Essay Conclusion

In your conclusion, succinctly recap the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. Reinforce your thesis statement and emphasize its broader implications. Rather than introducing new information, use the conclusion to leave a lasting impression on your readers. Consider prompting further thought or suggesting practical applications of your findings.

For instance, if your essay examined the impact of social media on political discourse, conclude by encouraging readers to critically evaluate the information they encounter online and actively engage in constructive conversations.

Proofread and Revise

In the process of writing social media essay, proofreading and revising are indispensable steps that can significantly enhance the overall quality of your work. Begin by meticulously checking for grammatical errors, ensuring that your sentences are clear and concise. Pay attention to the flow of your ideas, confirming that each paragraph seamlessly transitions into the next.

During the proofreading phase, keep an eye out for any inconsistencies in tone or style. This is an opportunity to refine your language and ensure that it aligns with the intended voice of your essay. Look for repetitive phrases or unnecessary words that might detract from the clarity of your message.

As you revise, consider the effectiveness of your hook. Does it still resonate as strongly as you intended? Can it be tweaked to better captivate your audience? A compelling hook sets the tone for your entire essay, so invest time in perfecting this crucial element.

Furthermore, don't hesitate to seek feedback from peers or mentors. Another perspective can provide valuable insights into areas that may need improvement. Fresh eyes often catch nuances that the writer might overlook. Alternatively, you might also explore the option to buy coursework for additional support.

Essays about social media

Social media has a direct impact on the self-esteem of children and teenagers. This is one of the most often studied negative impacts of many social platforms. When young people are constantly exposed to perfectly posed images and the social stressors of social media, not to mention the issue of cyberbullying, their self-esteem takes a nosedive.

This essay idea has a lot of research behind it. Spend some time exploring the research, and then discuss the effects of social media on developing minds. Finally, pull in the statistics you find online to make this essay topic shine. You can also check out these essays about the internet and essays about computers .

While the negative impact of social media gets discussed often, there are positives to it. For example, sites like LinkedIn allow you to explore work opportunities and build a professional network. Other social media websites make it easier to stay connected with far-away relatives. In addition, sometimes, social media can spark change in society on important cultural issues.

To counter all of the negative press about social media, consider looking at the positive influence of social media on our society in your essay. Then, pull in some of these positive impacts and benefits and build them into an essay that shows how, with proper guidelines in place, social media can help us. Like all things in modern society, social media has disadvantages. For example, when you are constantly connected to others, it can be difficult to get space to process emotions and work on bettering yourself. Cyberbullying, as already mentioned, is another drawback.

This essay topic has quite a few directions you can go. For example, you could explore how invasive social media has become in everyday life or how it sets up an unrealistic expectation of perfection. Social media use can also become invasive to people and detract from other enjoyable activities.

Essays About Social Media: Is social media addiction real

Social media addiction is something many people talk about, and you can discuss whether or not it is a real thing in your essay. Is it possible to have an addiction to using social media, and if so, how does the brain chemistry impact social media users’ experiences lead to addiction?

The truth is that getting likes and follows on social media creates a dopamine rush. People can become addicted to that feeling, which can significantly impact their social and mental health as they start fighting excessive use of social media. When used without control, social media can be addicting, and this is an excellent essay topic idea.

Cyberbullying occurs when people experience bullying over text or the Internet, and this problem is becoming an important one to address in 21st-century culture. Children are particularly vulnerable to this issue because they lack the emotional maturity to be responsible social media users. Yet adults can also be victims and perpetrators of cyberbullying.

This essay topic will explore the connection between cyberbullying and social media use. For example, does social media serve as the primary platform, or are other avenues, like texting, more of an issue? Explore these questions in your essay.

If something gets posted online, it no longer is secret. Even if it’s deleted, screenshots or browser histories make it impossible to delete completely. For this reason, many caution parents against posting information about their children, especially if those children are too young to consent to have their daily lives put on the internet for all to see.

This ethical question is one that today’s parents are addressing for the first time. Previous generations did not have to wonder about whether or not to share information online about their kids because they lacked an easy platform to do so. So this is a new question that makes it an interesting essay choice.

One of the potential negative effects of social media is the ease at which people can post hate speech and other dangerous posts and information. Social networking sites and social media sites have the option to censor this information, but this could also be seen as hurting people’s freedom of speech. You can think about this ethical question and choose a side, then write an engaging essay explaining your choice.

This essay could go either way. You could build solid evidence for allowing full freedom of speech on social media. However, because of the vast reach of most social media platforms and how some hate groups have used them to start problems, you may want to side with some minor censorship for illegal activities.

Essays About Social Media: How does social media marketing influence modern business?

For many businesses, social media is not a social platform. Instead, businesses view social media as a marketing platform. Social media marketing is very effective at reaching users with a marketing message.

This essay topic steps away from the social impacts of social media and instead looks at the business aspects. You could explore how social media has become an integral part of modern society and how that makes it a vital component of modern marketing strategies. You could also discuss what platforms, like  Facebook, WhatsApp, forums, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and others, make the most effective online marketing venue for businesses.

When you’re considering essay topics, consider not only the mental health component of social media use but also the lifestyle component. When people spend a lot of time online, they aren’t spending time exercising or taking care of their bodies in other ways.

In addition, social media can promote an unhealthy lifestyle by promoting an unrealistic body image. Many people, especially young girls and teenagers, end up with eating disorders or an over-reliance on exercise because they constantly see perfect figures on their favorite social media pages.

Many studies have shown that people in today’s society struggle to communicate in person. The rise in texting and social networks as a communication platform has influenced the way people communicate. You could explore the connection between social anxiety, and the rise of social media. This study will help you determine if there is a connection between these two changes.

The information technology resources available today are quite intensive. For example, website builders can use so many tools to track information about people. Should the government access this information, and how can hackers be prevented from accessing it? These are the questions worth asking and can make for an interesting essay.

The reality is that the World Wide Web is becoming a natural part of our daily lives. We must decide how much information we want the Internet to know about us. Conclusion This essay will allow you to look at your own opinion on this topic and come to a solid conclusion.

Social media can have a very direct impact on someone’s ability to get a job. Some inappropriate posts on social media could give a potential employer could cost a person their job. Something a teenager posted while still in high school could potentially come back to hurt them.

This is yet another interesting ethical question that you should ask yourself when considering social media’s role in modern society. It can also create an interesting and engaging essay that will create thoughtful consideration in the reader’s mind.

Social media can be a major time-waster. Yet it can also help businesses connect with potential customers or promote their marketing message. So is social media harmful or helpful for productivity? This question and its answers could work well as an essay.

While most people will readily agree that you can waste time on social media, you may find that there are some instances where it is a productivity booster. If you can compile those into an essay, you could have an interesting and engaging piece.

Are there any positive impacts of social media that have affected most of the world? Does this type of mass media have the potential to create positive social change? Do some research to see the really big benefits of social media, and make those into an essay.

For example, you may find some important cause that few people knew about before it went to social media, or you may learn of fundraising efforts for worldwide issues, like war refugees, that came through social media. Many of these events or impacts would not have happened if we had not had social media.

One potential drawback of social media is that information gets spread quickly, even without proper factual background checking. Unfortunately, this reality means that fake news stories often get circulated, even without validity.

These fake news stories directly impact what people think and feel about politics. In your essay, you could explore this fact and see how far this influence spreads. You can also discuss what can be done to stop this problem from growing even more. This essay idea could even discuss real-life instances where damage to someone’s political reputation occurred, even when there was no truth behind the reports, and impacted their political careers.

Social media started small but exploded quickly, and exploring that history is quite interesting. This essay topic idea could explore how it has grown and how many Americans experience social media every day. In addition, this essay would allow you to discuss some of the factors that impacted that growth.

You could also look at how social media could continue to grow in the future. For example, is there room for a new social media platform in the market? Will more adults embrace social media in the future than do today? Answering these questions can create a great essay option.

My Experience with the Social Media - Personal Essay Sample

The advent of technology has brought with it numerous changes in the society. One of the most affected areas is communication. Technology has replaced the traditional ways of relaying messages over long distances. Emails, tweets, and the Facebook Posts have gained ground at the expense of letters, telegrams, and the faxes. These social changes have transformed the contemporary societies in several ways. For instance, meeting friends is very simple, since one has to send a friend request to a total stranger and the two become friends in a matter of minutes. Businesses, politics, organizations, civil societies and many other associations have been enhanced by the social media. In other words, the social media is a powerful tool for communication and social advancement. On the flipside, online communities are a dangerous place. Cyber-bullying, fraudulent dealings, blackmail, and the spread of propaganda have been accentuated by the online media. Just like anybody else who is enthusiastic about the Internet, I have had both awful and awesome experiences with the social media. However, I do not wish to discourage people to use it, but I will recommended, based on my past experiences, the ideal way of using the internet in the most productive manner possible.

My first encounter with social media came when I opened a Facebook account. I was 16 years then when I got my first smartphone. It wasnt new, but it served all the purposes that I imagined a smart phone would do. Most of my friends were already on Facebook but I shied off from opening an account due to the numerous bad reports I had heard about cyber bullying. On this particular day, I decided that I was ready to come face to face with the online world, something that my friends praised often. With the help of one of my friends, I logged into the Facebook website and followed all the prompts necessary to open an account. In a matter of minutes, I was one among billions of Facebook users. One of the first things that Facebook required me to do was to add a profile picture. I did not have a picture that would fit an online display at the moment, so I took one instantly and uploaded it as my profile picture. I also downloaded a picture of my favorite sport car from the Internet and used it as my cover photo. I had been told that it was not safe to put my name as the username, so I quickly designed a pet name and added it instead.

After one week, I had received a hundred friend requests from my classmates and family members. I needed no classes on accepting the friends, so I confirmed all of them immediately. I was delighted to see that I made 100 virtual friends in less than a month, something that could take me a life time to do. Additionally, the Facebook operators gave suggested to me a number of groups that they thought I was interested in. What struck me is how they knew that I was interested in their offers, because surprisingly, all the suggestions looked appealing to me. Within one more week, I was a member of more than five groups, one of them being my former schools blog. Since then, I came to learn of other social media platform that did more or less the same as what Facebook does. All the online platforms virtually connect thousands of people with a common interest: to share with the world. I thus joined many other social media and became a world citizen, connected to billions of Internet users remotely.

Since I established my online presence, I have experienced both the good and bad sides of the Internet. For example, I have made purchases of goods online at a price that is far much below that in the grocery store. I have also kept track of all my former classmates by looking at their online posts. I once joined an online course which I did not complete. The reason being my failure to finish this course was time insufficiency. Online courses, as I came to learn call for ones patience and persistence. For an online student to graduate in a course, they must complete all the tutorials and assignments. Since these learning materials are offered over the internet, and in bits, it implies that a learner must spend a lot of time attending to the course. Due to my commitment to other activities, I failed to give my online course all the time it needed. One important thing I have learned with the Internet is that it promotes globalization. According to Ritzer (18), new trends are emerging everywhere as people try out new things they have learned through the internet and other sources. I am this not surprised that fashion, customs, music, and culture have spread widely through the internet. From my experience, I have realized that everybody is embracing the social media for all manner of reasons, and users should apply this tool prudently to avoid or minimizes its potential damages.

Why facebook became my favorite social media platform in college, never underestimate the power of facebook..

Why Facebook Became My Favorite Social Media Platform in College

Social media can be both a blessing and a curse. When I was in high school, I used Instagram and Twitter all the time. I would spend hours on those but Facebook took me 3 seconds to scroll. When I got to college I completely did a 180. Facebook is my favorite social media, and here's why.

Facebook is great because it is photos, statuses, articles, and more. It's like all social media in one place so I'm not sure why we need anything else! This is a place where all my friends are but more importantly my family. When I get on Facebook I can see what my favorite people, miles away, are doing. My grandma, accidentally sharing her horoscope, my sister, on another awesome adventure, and my parents, enjoying time at home. I always know where my aunt went to eat dinner on Friday and who got engaged this week.

Facebook is a place where I can show friends and family what I have been doing and I can see what they've been doing with just a tap on the phone. I watch delicious recipe videos, read fantastic Odyssey articles, and stalk some teachers (don't tell me I'm the only one). Yes, I still use Instagram and Twitter, but I rarely post there.

Don't get me wrong, I still pick up the phone and call (yeah I know, shocker, I use this thing at a telephone!), and there is nothing like seeing the one's you love; but when time is short I am thankful to be able to reach into my pocket and check-in on my loved ones.

Waitlisted for a college class here's what to do, dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why i chose a small school over a big university..

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin ." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.

1. My school is incredibly unique.

There are so many different kinds of people that each bring something really special to contribute to the school which makes it so unique.

2. I am not just a number at my school.

I am a student that my professors know about and I like knowing that my professors can watch my progress.

3. I feel like I am contributing something to the community.

I like feeling like I can make a difference on my campus.

4. I really do feel like it is my home away from home.

It isn't just my school. It is absolutely my home away from home. I feel so comfortable there and it was as hard of an adjustment as I had thought it would be.

5. My professors know me and I feel that I can easily communicate with them.

I feel like they will do anything to help students succeed. I can always go to my professors. I like knowing that I have someone looking out for me.

6. The incredible people I've met

The people I have met at my school, even after my first year, have made such a huge impact on me. I know that these are people that I will stay friends with long after college is done.

7. Opportunities

My school offers so many different opportunities to get involved in things around campus. Even writing for the Odyssey was an opportunity offered to me by my school and I decided to challenge myself by writing an article. Turns out, I really enjoy writing. I might not have had this opportunity at a bigger school.

8. Students want to learn

I feel as though I am not just learning inside the classroom at my school. I am learning outside the classroom to from my fellow classmates who want to engage about the things we have learned.

9. Ability to join a sorority and have a house full of people I know I can talk to anytime I need to

I wasn't sure if being in a sorority was something I was interested in but when I met the amazing people in the sorority and how inclusive it was, I knew that it was going to be a good thing for me. The people I've met in my sorority have been so amazing.

10. I have figured out how I learn best because my school offers so many different ways of learning.

Because of the smaller class sizes, there is more flexibility in the way the class is taught. This was helpful because I was able to try out different ways of learning and figure out which way I learn best.

Essay on Social Media

Introduction

Social media has become an integral part of modern life. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok have revolutionized the way we connect, share information, and communicate with each other. While social media offers numerous benefits, it also poses challenges and raises important questions about its impact on society. This essay will explore the various facets of social media, including its advantages, disadvantages, and its role in shaping our lives.

Advantages of Social Media

  • Global Connectivity: Social media has connected people across the globe, transcending geographical boundaries. This connectivity allows us to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering cross-cultural understanding and global awareness.
  • Information Dissemination: Social media serves as a powerful tool for disseminating information and news rapidly. It has the potential to spread awareness about important issues, emergencies, and events in real-time.
  • Social Activism: Social media platforms have played a pivotal role in various social and political movements, such as the Arab Spring and the Black Lives Matter movement. It provides a platform for advocacy, mobilization, and raising awareness about societal issues.
  • Business and Marketing: Social media has become a vital tool for businesses to reach their target audience, promote products and services, and engage with customers. It has created new opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses to thrive.
  • Education and Learning: Social media offers a vast repository of educational resources, from online courses to informative content shared by experts. It has made learning more accessible and interactive.

Disadvantages of Social Media

  • Privacy Concerns: One of the most significant drawbacks of social media is the erosion of personal privacy. Users often share sensitive information unknowingly, making them vulnerable to identity theft, cyberbullying, and data breaches.
  • Addiction: Social media addiction is a real concern, with many individuals spending excessive amounts of time online. This addiction can lead to social isolation, decreased productivity, and adverse effects on mental health.
  • Misinformation: The rapid spread of false information and fake news on social media platforms has the potential to mislead and manipulate the masses. This misinformation can have serious consequences, especially during crises.
  • Cyberbullying: Social media provides a platform for cyberbullying, which can have severe emotional and psychological effects on victims, especially teenagers.
  • Filter Bubbles: Algorithms on social media platforms often curate content based on user preferences, leading to filter bubbles where individuals are exposed only to information that aligns with their existing beliefs, reinforcing polarization and limiting exposure to diverse perspectives.

The Role of Social Media in Shaping Society

Social media has a profound impact on the way we perceive and interact with the world around us. It shapes our opinions, influences our behaviors, and even plays a role in politics and governance. Here are some key ways in which social media shapes society:

  • Political Influence: Social media has transformed political campaigning and activism. It has become a battleground for political discourse, with political leaders and movements using these platforms to rally supporters, disseminate information, and engage in public debate.
  • Consumer Behavior: Social media greatly influences consumer behavior. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have turned visual content into powerful tools for marketing and branding, impacting our purchasing decisions.
  • Mental Health: The constant exposure to curated, idealized versions of people’s lives on social media can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Additionally, cyberbullying and online harassment contribute to mental health issues, especially among adolescents.
  • Social Change: Social media has the potential to drive social change by raising awareness of important issues and mobilizing communities to take action. It has been instrumental in movements related to gender equality, environmental sustainability, and human rights.

Social media is a double-edged sword. It has revolutionized communication, connected people worldwide, and opened up new opportunities in various fields. However, it also presents significant challenges related to privacy, addiction, misinformation, and its influence on society’s behavior and beliefs.

To harness the positive aspects of social media while mitigating its negative effects, individuals, communities, and policymakers must work together. Responsible usage, media literacy, and regulations are essential to strike a balance between the benefits and drawbacks of social media in our ever-evolving digital society.

Facebook Essay

To make this Facebook essay easy to understand for any reader, the author will start with terminology.

Facebook is among the most popular social media networking sites today. It is popular due to its multiple applications and the ease of communication it offers to the user. It allows people to share pictures, events and statuses on a single platform.

Facebook has several benefits, such as forming groups, chatting with friends and finding information on multiple topics. The platform is also highly informative due to the multiple pages on a host of topics, including but not limited to health, education, science, exercise, etc. It is also perfect for keeping in touch with relatives and friends who can stay connected to a single platform.

Below, this essay about Facebook will dive deeper into the platform’s advantages and how it can help kids, students, and adults communicate.

More recently, mobile companies have enabled users to connect to Facebook through their phones. Mobile phone technology such as GPRS now allows users to access Facebook from any location. This feature has made Facebook extremely popular among today’s generation.

Staying connected has never been so simple and effective than it is on Facebook. Talking to friends and relatives or family members is now possible with a single Facebook account which is a perfect platform to chat and communicate.

A more recent addition to the online chat program is the video calling feature which has gained immense popularity. Not only can one talk to people but also see them live with the help of this video chat feature.

Individuals no longer have to yearn to keep in touch with their friends and dear ones. A single Facebook account enables users to achieve several functions all at once.

Another very important feature of Facebook is the online gaming portal which it offers to its users. There are hundreds of thousands of games on Facebook which one can play at any given time. The interesting aspect is the ability to play these games with friends.

There are multiple games like Poker, Diamond Dash, Zuma, Farm Heroes Sage and others on Facebook.

Playing these games is a unique and special experience since it allows users to interact with friends and engage in healthy competition. There are no additional costs and users can play games absolutely free of cost.

Facebook is becoming a highly successful platform not only for making new friends and finding old ones, but for accessing global and local news as well. Most of the news and media companies have launched their Facebook pages.

This feature has added the extra benefit to Facebook, making it educational and purposeful. Besides being a medium to interact and communicate, Facebook has become a marketing platform for many popular brands. Today, one can easily access all the famous global brands on Facebook.

Several small time businesses have become successful on Facebook. People, who do not have the capital to open a store, have launched their products on Facebook, gaining financial success and recognition.

One can buy practically anything on Facebook from shoes, bags, accessories, clothes, phones, laptops, electronic etc. Many of these online stores offer the facility to make online payments and deliver goods to the buyer’s home.

Thus, through Facebook, people can engage in a host of activities such as playing games, interacting with friends, chatting, video conferencing, marketing, buying, selling and numerous others. Facebook is no longer only a social networking site to stay connected with friends and family.

It has become a platform with online marketing options for the users. When used responsibly, Facebook is an excellent medium for several purposes with extremely low cost and high benefits to the users.

Why Instagram Is My Favorite Social Media Platform

Amanda Abella

Although Instagram has been around for some time, it’s really been buzzing lately. It seems as if every internet marketer is teaching people how to use the social media platform for business. I, for one, am all for it. After many years of using different social media platforms for business, I can confidently say Instagram is my favorite.

Of course, Instagram is my favorite for now. I am very much aware that Facebook owns it. I am also aware that they change algorithms. This is why I advise coaching clients and students to always use social media to drive traffic or build their email list.

That being said, here are the many reasons why Instagram is my favorite social media platform.

Table of Contents

It’s a lot of fun

First and foremost, I think Instagram is a lot of fun. I personally like to use my creativity in multiple ways, and Instagram forces me to do that. For example, I write for a living so sometimes I get bored with it. On Instagram, I’m forced to learn other creative skills like photography.

It’s also a lot of fun to take photos for Instagram. A friend and I recently ran around the local arts district taking photos we now use for Instagram marketing. It was a really fun day and now I have photos for at least a month’s worth of marketing.

Instagram stories are hot

I love getting a peek into people’s lives. I also love giving my own followers a peek into my life. In the current world of online marketing, this sort of transparency helps build trust with your market.

Additionally, I’m currently getting hundreds of views on my Instagram stories per day. This means I’d be stupid not to use it to drive traffic or build my email list. Since I have over 10,000 followers on Instagram, I also have the “Swipe Up” option enabled on my Instagram stories. This allows viewers to swipe up on their phones and be directed to a webpage of my choosing.

For example, I’m currently using daily Instagram stories to promote a giveaway I’m doing on my blog. This drives traffic and builds my email list.

I’m doing business via DMs

I don’t know why, but lately, people are just sending me DMs on Instagram rather than emailing me. I literally landed a monthly radio segment on a massive media network via my Instagram DMs.  Since there are so many forms of business communication these days that it would only make sense that people send direct messages.

Instagram followers take action when directed to

I can directly link money that I’ve made to Instagram. Many of the students for my six-week group coaching program initially found me on Instagram. I now have enough data to show that Instagram is the starting point for many of my clients.

Since I normally direct them to take action by joining an email list, my list has grown significantly without me having to spend money. I also have people tagging me in posts and sending even more followers my way. And, as I already mentioned, I’m getting a lot of traction on my Instagram stories.

Final Thoughts

Instagram is hands down my favorite social media tool ever. It allows me to have fun while still building my business over time. Best of all, I can do it without having to spend money.

IELTS speaking part 1

Examiner: Is social media popular in your country?

Philippe: “ Very much. Many people, especially the young, are trying to become  vloggers  and  influencers . The try to accumulate as many  followers  as possible. Apparently, there are people in my country earning a considerable income from this.”

Examiner: Do you use social media often?

Samanpreet: I must confess that I am an avid user of social media. I am constantly  DMing  my friends the newest  memes  and the latest  viral  videos. It’s a way to connect with them even when we can’t be together.

Why do some people choose not to use social media?

Ali: the internet is still in many ways, like the wild west with very little legislation or controls. It is extremely easy to fall prey to  scammers  trying to trick you out of money or even worse, your identity. Social media sites are full of  trolls  who only post in order to incite a reaction or  haters  who  badger  other posters or spew negativity everywhere.

IELTS speaking part 2 (sample cue card)

Talk about your favorite social media site or application

Say when you first used it

  • Why you use it
  • How often you use it
  • And if you recommend it to others

While many people my age have moved on to Snapchat or TikTok, Instagram remains my favorite social media site for a variety of reasons. I started using this app five years ago when I started experimenting with photography and I find that it is an application that allows me to express myself creatively, by using various  filters  for my photography or videos to create an effect I desire.

I have accumulated a rather large number of followers over the years, but I certainly would not call myself an  influencer . I now use the application at least 3 times a week to post stories or to  dm  my friends and followers.

I still enjoy using Instagram very much and would absolutely recommend it to others ….but you do need to have thick skin if you amass a large following. I have had people make  derogatory  comments to me which can be rather upsetting but fortunately you can  block  them easily. I have been fortunate so far, but some people I know have been victims of  catfishing , which can be traumatic.

IELTS speaking part 3

At what age are children are generally allowed to use social media in your country?

I think it really depends on which application the child is using. Some applications generally expose a child more to potential predators or  cyberbullies  so I think children should be at least 15 to use them. I have heard that predators create fake profiles in order to groom children – this is despicable and is just one reason why parents should monitor their children’s device use.

Do you think people will social media more or less in the future?

With so many things changing so quickly, it’s rather difficult to predict what the future holds. A few years ago we were sending  emojis  to one another and now everywhere you look people are dancing in front of their cameras for the world to see. So, I imagine our obsession with social media will continue although I hesitate to predict what form that will take.

Why do you think bullying on the internet has become so widespread?

I think  cyberbullies  and  trolls  generally feel that a shield of  anonymity  protects them. Many people are on social media area out there with dummy profiles harassing people at will and I guess like in all kinds of bullying, it makes the bully feel important or worthy. So the bully gets the validation he or she needs without any of the repercussions that might occur if the bullying were to take place in the real world.

  • Viral:  if a post/ video is viral or “has gone viral,” that means it is spreading very rapidly across the internet,

A woman living her dream said her life became a nightmare overnight.

An American travel influencer said that ever since posting about living a happy, childfree life at age 37 last fall, she’s been hounded by internet trolls and cyberbullies — mostly male — who spew vitriol at her.

However, after writing a piece for Today.com detailing her harrowing experience, Emily Hart, now 38, has realized she isn’t alone in her struggle to live life to the fullest without being attacked for it.

“The response to the essay has been really lovely and overwhelmingly positive with many women reaching out who can relate,” she told The Post

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Emily Hart 💜 | solo travel (@emilyventures)

Hart, who goes by emilyventures on Instagram, first posted a reel of herself in all the beautiful travel destinations she’s visited, along with the title: “Age 37: Never married. No Kids.”

It has been viewed more than 16 million times.

Since then, though, she’s gotten bombarded with hateful comments.

One she shared in her essay reads: “No kids, not married, and 37, just a big child with no responsibility and never done anything useful, pathetic cow.”

She wrote that “hundreds of commenters per hour” told her she was “pathetic” and speculated that feminism “deluded me into believing I was happy.”

Hart noted that many of the commenters were men who had pictures of their children in their profile photos. Some women messaged her, too — “many with Bible verses and ‘kindness’ in their bios, telling me every variation of ‘you will die alone’ and ‘no one wants you anyway’ that they could muster,” she added.

According to her rant, she suspects her post went viral among the “tradwife,” side of the internet, in which content creators glorify staying at home and adhering to traditional gender roles.

She said since writing her essay, other women shared their support for her and said they had similar experiences.

The influencer of more than a decade said that in the first week after making her post, she doesn’t think she slept for over 30 minutes at a time.

She later fell into a depression and suffered from “digestive problems, low energy, panic attacks, angry outbursts, and my skin started breaking out,” she wrote.

As a seasoned influencer, she was used to handling a few nasty comments and she would just block a hater or delete a crass comment — and then move on with her life.

Hart said that social media went from being a happy place to a scary place.

Unfortunately, the hateful words seemingly came in faster than she was able to delete them. Sharing her life online had once filled her with so much confidence, but the opposite was happening now.

” ‘It’s not normal to have this much negativity thrown at you,’ I tried to explain to friends, but the truth is not many people have ever or will ever experience anything like this,” she penned.

“There is no road map or DSM diagnosis for going viral, but as I now know from my experience, it can be life-altering,” she added.

She felt pressured to write follow-up posts explaining that she didn’t necessarily want to avoid marriage or having kids forever — but it was where she was in her life at the moment, and it wasn’t going to stop her from enjoying herself.

The way she views social media has changed since negative comments piled up.

She's sharing her story in the hopes it will spread awareness about cyberbullying.

“For months after the post, I was on edge whenever I opened Instagram,” she wrote in her essay. “The app that makes up a large percentage of my livelihood had become something I feared.”

Hart, a solo traveler who claims she has visited all 50 states and almost every national park, is sharing her hardships along with her travels to spread awareness about cyberbullying.

“I want to use my experiences to clear the field for others, and I believe vulnerability and honesty are how to do it,” she said.

Origin Uncertain: Unraveling the Mysteries of Etymology

  • By Anatoly Liberman
  • March 27 th 2024

Our readers probably expect this post to deal with Mark Twain’s first famous story . Alas, no. My frog tale is, though mildly entertaining, more somber and will certainly not be reprinted from coast to coast or propel me to fame. In the past, I have written several essays about animal names. One of them examined toad . Here too, the toad will make its appearance, but before it does so, we should keep in mind that animal names—be it horse or sparrow , shark or rabbit —are often among the most obscure words from an etymological point of view. Frog is no exception. Consider Greek barakahs (origin unknown; borrowed from some other language?).

Frogs are famous for their long hind legs and jumping. Consequently, we may expect them to be called jumpers. And this sometimes happens. For example, in Russian, lyag u shka “frog” (stress on the second syllable) is derived from the word for “hip” ( liazhka ), obviously with reference to the creature’s ability to hop and leap. One does not have to be a historical linguist to recognize the connection. But strangely, this transparency is rare. To increase our confusion, we find that even across related languages, the word for the frog is sometimes applied to the toad.

Numerous animal names go back to the sound those animals make. Supposedly, Latin rana “frog” is sound – imitative . I am not quite sure what frogs “say.” English speakers hear croak-croak . Does one also hear ran-ran from them? In Russian, frogs go kva-kva , and in German, kvak-kvak . People’s attempts to imitate animals sounds are often puzzling: compare oink-oink (English) and khriu – khriu (Russian). It almost appears that English and Russian pigs have inherited different languages. German pigs, with their grunz – grunz , should feel more comfortable in the east that in the English-speaking world. The internet informs us that frogs whistle, croak, “ribbit” (an American verb, seemingly coined for this purpose only), peak, cluck, bark, and grunt—quite a symphony (as regards grunt , compare grunz-grunz ; German z has the value of ts ). As we will soon see, the origin of English frog is “not yet settled” (quoted from my favorite English dictionary by Henry Cecil Wyld ). What if frog is a sound-imitating word? Perhaps those who coined frog heard frog – frog , along with croak-croak , kva-kva , and ran-ran ? Correct etymologies are usually simple, but it does not follow that every simple etymology is correct. The Old English for “frog” was frogga , a hypocoristic formation, similar to docga “dog” ( dog is a word of “contested etymology”: see my posts on May 4 , May 11 , May 18 , and June 8, 2016 ). In the adjective hypo cor istic , cor – means “child” (from Greek kóros “child”). Both dog and frog may be ancient baby words.

my favourite social media essay

The “adult” root of dog (if it existed) is unknown. Besides, dog is almost isolated in English, and to increase our bafflement, the Old English form of dog occurred most rarely in the recorded texts. Frog is less obscure than dog , because Old English words for “frog” did turn up in early medieval prose. They are forsc , frosc , and frox . Obviously, they are different forms of the same noun, whose pronunciation fluctuated. In Middle English , we find the variants frūde (with ū , a long vowel) and froude , borrowed from Scandinavian: the Old Norse (that is, Old Icelandic) for “frog” was froskr , frauki , and frauðr ( ð = th in Modern English th is ), in addition to frauki . One can see that the name for “frog” had several variants not only in English. Some fluctuation was due to phonetic reasons. For instance, in f or sc and f ro sc , the vowel and consonant played leapfrog (I am genuinely sorry for the pun, but the temptation was too strong). This game is called metathesis . When r is entailed, metathesis is especially common: compare English b ur n and German b re nnen . Both b ir d and h or se once sounded as b ri d and h ro s .

my favourite social media essay

If frog was not a production of the nursery or sound imitation, what could its origin be? Naturally, etymologists searched for some similar word that might provide a clue to the animal name. One such word is froth . If the match is good, the reference must have been to the frog’s slimy skin. The noun froth probably existed in Old English, but only a related verb has been recorded. The noun we today know is a fourteenth-century borrowing from Old Norse. The connection froth ~ frog is not particularly appealing, and hardly anyone supports it today. Dutch vors , Old English frosk (see it above), and Old Icelandic frauki (assuming that they all go back to a so-called protoform) seem to have developed from some early root like frusk -, which corresponds to non-Germanic prusk -. It will be remembered that the non-Germanic (that is, Greek, Latin, Celtic, Slavic, and so forth) match for f is Germanic p : compare English f ather , and Latin p ater (the words are certainly related). This regularity is part is part of what is known as the Germanic Consonant Shift , or Grimm’s Law .

In prusk -, -sk might be a suffix, which leaves us with the root pru -. This root was found in the Russian verb pry-gat’ “to jump.” No correspondence could be better (frogs emerged as jumpers), but the entire procedure looks like an attempt to justify a forgone conclusion: since frogs are jumpers, let us try to find some word meaning “jump, spring, leap” and connect the two. Many good dictionaries accept the frog ~ prygat’ solution, but I share Elmar Seebold ’s skepsis on this score (Seebold is the editor of the main etymological dictionary of German).

We’ll leave our frog in midair until next week and remember that English has another name for this anurous amphibian, namely, pad or paddock (- ock is a suffix). Perhaps some light on the origin of frog will fall from the history of pad ? Pad first meant “toad”; pad “a small cushion, etc.” corresponds to northern German pad “the sole of the foot.” To paddle is almost a synonym for toddle (of unknown origin!). After years of hesitation, etymologists seem to have reached a state of unenthusiastic agreement that despite all difficulties connected with the origin of path , the word reflects the tread of the walker going pad ~ pad ~ pad . All over the world, people and animals are said to go pad-pad , pat-pat , and top-top . Frogs jump, while toads move slowly, that is, go pad-pad . I believe that pad “toad” is onomatopoeic (sound-imitating), and so are, most probably, pad – in paddle and tod – in toddle . There is also English dialectal tod “fox.” Since among other things, tod means “a weight used for wool; a bushy mass,” couldn’t tod “fox” get its name from the animal’s bushy tail? Be that as it may, pad and tod have nothing to do with frog , and after this long digression, we are none the wiser.

my favourite social media essay

The main conclusion of this part of our investigation is that in dealing with the names of the frog and the toad, one should be on the lookout for expressive formations. Toads and frogs have occupied the attention of our ancestors much more than, in our opinion, they deserve. Anticipating the discussion next week, it should be mentioned that there also is northern German pogge “frog,” which, despite its similarity with pad , cannot be dismissed without further discussion ( po gg e resembles fro g !), and we’ll soon see a promising way of dealing with this word. Wait for the continuation next week!

This reminds me of Aristophanes’ play “The Frogs”. The frogs croak: “Brekekekex koax koax”.

Anatoly you write, “Consider Greek barakahs (origin unknown; borrowed from some other language?).

The Ancient Greek word for frog is βατραχος (vatrahos)

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%B2%CE%AC%CF%84%CF%81%CE%B1%CF%87%CE%BF%CF%82

And the origins ARE known! As this is a compound Greek word made up of “βατος” (marshes) + “τρεχω” (run). Thus describing a creature that lives and runs in wetlands! Which, of course, frogs are!

I have commented on this in your blog several years ago! Look it up! As the word “frog” in English and other European languages derives directly from the Ancient Greek word. Clearly Ancient Greek and not “origins unknown” since this is a compound Greek word with “original meaning” (as the word ‘in itself’) in Greek and in no other language!
