Structure of Program

Participating students complete the PhD degree requirements set by the NYU Department of Biology and in accordance with the academic policies of NYU GSAS. Each student develops an individualized course and research plan in consultation with the Director of Graduate Study at the NYU Department of Biology and the student’s NYU Shanghai faculty advisor. A typical sequence follows:

Begin program with funded research rotation, up to 3 months preceding first Fall semester, to familiarize with NYU Shanghai and faculty as well as lay a foundation for future doctoral study.

Complete PhD coursework at Department of Biology alongside other NYU PhD students.

Return to Shanghai for second funded research rotation to solidify relationships with NYU Shanghai faculty and make further progress in research.

Under supervision of NYU Shanghai faculty advisor, pursue dissertation research and continue coursework. Depending on each student’s individualized course of study, return visits to New York may also occur. Complete all required examinations and progress evaluations, both oral and written, leading up to submission and defense of doctoral thesis.

To learn more about the NYU Biology PhD program degree requirements, please visit this page .

Application Process and Dates

Applications are to be submitted through the NYU GSAS Application portal , within which students should select the Biology PhD as their program of interest, and then indicate their preference for NYU Shanghai by marking the appropriate checkbox when prompted. Applicants will be evaluated by a joint admissions committee of New York and Shanghai faculty. Application requirements are set by the NYU Department of Biology and are the same as those for all NYU PhD applicants, no matter their campus preference; however, candidates are recommended to elaborate in their application and personal statements about their specific interests in the NYU Shanghai program and faculty.

For admission in Fall 2024, the application deadline is December 1, 2023.

Interested students are welcome to contact Vivien Du , PhD Program Manager, at [email protected] with any inquiries or to request more information.

Properly Write Your Degree

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

Not sure which degree you are graduating with? Here is a list of Undergraduate Majors and corresponding degrees:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Communication
  • College of Education
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Health Sciences
  • College of Nursing

NYU Sends Out Offers of Admission To the Class of 2028

Offers of admission to NYC campus were made to just 8% of the 118,000 undergraduate applicants

NYU has released offers of admission to the Class of 2028. Offers of admission to NYU’s New York campus were made to just 8% of those submitting 118,000 applications to be members of next fall’s entering undergraduate class. Three of NYU’s undergraduate colleges offered admission to fewer than 5% of applicants.

This cycle, NYU witnessed its largest early decision applicant pool in history, comprising over 22,000 applications, marking a 56%-surge in Early Decision applications across NYU’s degree-granting campuses over the past five years. Over 60% of the applications to NYU were from public schools, with almost 9,000 of them from students who work with non-profit organizations such as OppNet, Bottom Line, College Advising Corps (CAC), Minds Matter, and the Charles Hayden Foundation, among others, who partner with NYU to create new pathways to increase educational access.

NYU anticipates that 20% of the class will be Pell Grant recipients and 20% will be First-Generation students. This year’s cohort represents over 103 countries, 49 states (all but North Dakota), several US territories, and approximately 1,000 students from New York City public schools.

The NYU Promise: The NYU Promise is President Linda G. Mills’ expanded commitment to affordability. More than 1,000 students are recipients of the NYU Promise, which offers free tuition for students with family incomes under $100,000. In addition, the NYU Promise includes meeting students’ demonstrated need if it is beyond tuition and increasing aid annually to keep pace with increases in tuition.

“NYU’s admitted class of 2028 is made up of students who represent the best of us,” said Jonathan Williams, Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Admissions, Pre-College Access and Pathways. “Throughout their high school journey, these remarkable young individuals hail from various corners of the United States and the globe. They have proven themselves to be exemplary bridgebuilders, striving to connect diverse perspectives and foster understanding. Their unwavering perseverance in the face of myriad challenges showcases their dedication to creating a better world – together. They are shining examples of good listeners, global citizens, and future leaders. Their presence will undoubtedly enrich the NYU community and contribute to a brighter future for all.”

New York University

Founded in 1831, NYU is one of the world’s foremost research universities (with more than $1 billion per year in research expenditures, it is ranked seventh among private research universities) and is a member of the selective Association of American Universities. NYU has degree-granting university campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai; has 13 other global academic sites, including London, Paris, Florence, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, and Accra, and US sites in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, and Tulsa, OK; and both sends more students to study abroad and educates more international students than any other U.S. college or university. Through its numerous schools and colleges, NYU is a leader in conducting research and providing education in the arts and sciences, law, medicine, business, dentistry, engineering, education, nursing, the cinematic and performing arts, music and studio arts, public administration, social work, public health, and professional studies, among other areas.
