PhD candidate in Responsible Research Methods

Your career starts on Magnet.me

Create a profile and receive smart job recommendations based on your liked jobs.

Are you interested in improving (psychological) science? Consider applying and gain skills and knowledge to conduct cutting-edge (meta) research on replication, reproducibility, robustness, Open Science, and science communication.

What you will do

As a Phd-candidate you will work on a four-year research project in the Methodology and Statistics Unit at Leiden University under supervision of Dr. Tom Heyman, Dr. Anna E. van ‘t Veer, Prof.dr. E.M.L. Dusseldorp. In this project you will systematically examine the role, impact and uptake of replications and adversarial collaborations within psychology.

Your role will involve:

  • Conducting literature search
  • Designing studies and coordinating online data collection
  • Analyzing data
  • Writing scientific articles
  • Contributing to teaching within the Methodology and Statistics unit

Project description

The scientific record is a continuously updating source of knowledge, and it is often assumed that scientific fields have self-correction mechanisms that ensure the integrity of this record. It is becoming increasingly obvious that most error correction mechanisms have costs (e.g., they take time and effort), and can only be applied to a small subset of the (psychology) literature. This makes it all the more important to evaluate the impact of such efforts, and to direct efforts where the most value can be gained. In other words, there is a need for metascientific work on the self-correcting ability of psychological science, and the academic transition to a culture that fosters this self-correction through open, collaborative, value-driven, and responsible scientific processes. For instance, how do researchers change their beliefs about a claim when it is corrected in one way or another? And is this change reflected in the literature through for instance the way researchers collectively cite the updated claims?

There are many ways by which the scientific record can get corrected or updated: retractions, correction notices, comments and replies, verification or robustness checks, (post-publication) peer review, enabling scrutiny by making outputs transparent and open, reproducibility checks, loss of confidence statements, and replications as well as adversarial collaborations. The current project will mainly focus on the latter two, because the scientific community is increasingly emphasizing these methods as ways to address current problems surrounding replicability and fragmentation of the theoretical landscape in psychology. More specifically, in this project we will systematically examine the role, impact and uptake of replications and adversarial collaborations within psychology.

In addition to working on the research project described above, the candidate is also expected to contribute to teaching within the Methodology and Statistics unit (max. 10 % of time; for example, supervision BSc and MSc thesis projects), and will thus also gain experience in this respect.

What you bring

  • A (research) master’s degree (completed, or to be awarded before the starting date) in a topic relevant for the PhD, such as psychology, data science, statistics, or information sciences.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization in the R-software environment.
  • A collaborative mindset, openness to learning new skills, and willingness to share knowledge
  • Attention to detail and clear communication skills
  • Evidence of the ability to conduct high-quality research and write scientific text
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a research group
  • Familiarity with Open Science and responsible research practices as well as a willingness to adopt them

We are looking for an enthusiastic student who wants to develop their career and further the transparency, integrity, and overall credibility of our field.

Where you will work

Leiden University

PhD Candidate Biopsychosocial factors in chronic skin conditions

About the employer

Leiden University

Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is one of Europe’s leading international research universities.

Vacancy number 14771

Job type PhD positions

Hours (in fte) 0,8-1,0

Location Leiden

Placed on 16 April 2024

Closing date 5 May 2024 19 more days to apply

In the Netherlands, over 2.5 million individuals suffer from chronic inflammatory skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis, atopic eczema). The psychological impact of these conditions is substantial, including increased risk for depression and anxiety, and a high prevalence of experienced stigmatization. In turn, psychological factors are known to influence the severity and symptoms of skin conditions (e.g., stress, feeling stigmatized, or expectancies that itch symptoms may get worse), and related behavior (e.g. excessive scratching behaviour, treatment non-adherence). However, this field remains underexplored, resulting in suboptimal treatment outcomes and high socio-economic costs. More knowledge on the relationship between psychological factors and severity as well as symptoms of skin conditions could help predict which patients will benefit from which treatments. In this PhD project, you will focus on examining the biopsychosocial impact of six chronic skin conditions, and the influence of this biopsychosocial impact on disease outcomes and treatment outcomes. Finding the right treatment at the right moment for the individual patient with a skin condition is the main aim of Next Generation ImmunoDermatology (NGID), a large nationwide consortium that this PhD project will be a part of.

What you will do In this PhD project, your main focus will be to examine the influence of biopsychosocial factors such as distress, expectancies and stigmatization on disease outcomes in patients with chronic skin conditions. To this end, you will conduct prospective research in collaboration with hospitals throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, you will conduct experimental laboratory research with behavioural tasks and/or standardized inductions of itch. Lastly, throughout your PhD, you will be involved in the assessment of patients’ needs and wishes, and in ensuring that the patient perspective is prioritized in all aspects of this nationwide project.

Key work activities

  • Contribute ideas about the design of prospective and laboratory studies to examine the influence of biopsychosocial factors on skin disease outcomes
  • Examine and safeguard the needs and preferences of patients throughout the project
  • Recruit and test participants
  • Carry out data handling and -analyses
  • Write articles which will culminate in a PhD dissertation

Webster Athens Welcomes John F. Kennedy School of Law at National University for ‘Trial of Socrates’ Discourse

April 19, 2024

  • history politics and international relations
  • undergraduate

Academics, students and professionals from the John F. Kennedy School of Law at National University, along with actor Yiannis Simonidis, Webster Athens Rector Vasilis J. Botopoulos, Vice Rector of Academic Affairs Susie Michailidis and Hellenic Studies Program Director Niki Stavrou pose for a commemorative photo on the roof garden of Webster Athens Cultural Center in Placa, Athens, with the Acropolis in the background.

A “Trial of Socrates” academic discourse recently took center stage at the Webster Athens Cultural Center – bringing together students and scholars from both Webster Athens and the John F. Kennedy School of Law in San Diego. Students, faculty and staff from National University visited Webster Athens and attended the event in conjunction with a travel/study course which focuses on the “Trial of Socrates.”

The discussion, which delved into the 399 BC trial of the famous Greek philosopher Socrates, aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the trial. Academics, professionals and students participated in vibrant discussions that not only revisited the historical significance of the trial, but also explored its relevance in today’s global context – specifically its implications for modern legal and ethical frameworks.

The discourse featured several experts who spoke about the “Trial of Socrates,” including Yiannis Simonides. Simonides’ work as an actor, director and producer with Elliniko Theatro has led him to perform the acclaimed play “Socrates Now” in over 50 countries, giving him a unique viewpoint of the historical trial. His presentation was not just an academic lecture but included a performance which brought the historical context and intricacies of Socratic thought to life. Students conversed with Simonides to gain a deeper understanding of the historical, philosophical and cultural dimensions of Socrates’ trial.

Lisa Hutton, dean of the College of Law and Public Service at National University, along with Chris Gus Kanios, professor of law at the John F. Kennedy School of Law and president of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation, attended the event. Hutton and Kanios played key roles in the organization of the discourse. Professor Bryan Hance, innovative director of paralegal and pre-law studies; James Rogers, director of advanced student experience; and Tina Stallone, director of dean support, all from National University, also attended.

The “Trial of Socrates” event was hosted by Vasilis J. Botopoulos, rector of Webster Athens; along with Susie Michailidis, professor and vice rector of academic affairs and Niki Stavrou, hellenic studies program director, assistant professor, and CEO of Nikos Kazantzakis Estate.    “This discourse served as a bridge for cultural exchange between the academic communities of the United States and Greece, fostering a mutual understanding that transcends geographical and disciplinary boundaries,” stated Rector Botopoulos. “These types of interactions reflect Webster’s commitment to fostering global citizenship and collaborative approaches to universal challenges.”

  • Research funding

PhD candidates come in all shapes and sizes, from those with an appointment at the University to dual PhDs who have a job outside the University. Here we explain which PhD places we have at Leiden University, so you can quickly see which type suits you.

Funded PhD candidates

The University may appoint full or part-time PhD candidates. Most PhD candidates have a funded place as a PhD candidate. A full-time place is in principle a four-year appointment with 10% teaching duties. PhD candidates sometimes choose to do a cotutelle or joint doctorate . You can also be appointed as a PhD fellow. This is a six-year appointment with 35% teaching duties.

See our job vacancies for PhD candidates

PhDs without a funded place

Contract PhDs receive a grant in their country of origin, which enables them to conduct PhD research at our university. External PhDs or dual PhDs do not receive any funding in principle. They write their thesis – often alongside their regular work – under the supervision of a supervisor from Leiden. To be accepted as an external PhD, you must have your PhD proposal approved by a Graduate School . The University also has a dual PhD programme to give experienced ‘knowledge workers’ the opportunity to earn a PhD at Leiden University.

The faculty has various categories of doctoral candidates.

Doctoral candidates who are employees

The majority of doctoral candidates are appointed as a PhD Candidate. This appointment is for a period of four years, during which time, besides performing doctoral research, training courses are followed as part of the PhD Training Programme. Most PhD Candidates also have a minor teaching component (maximum 10% of the total period).

Appointment

PhD Candidates are initially appointed for one year, with the possibility to extend this by three years. Within three months of the commencement of the appointment, the PhD Candidate draws up a personal Training en Supervision Plan (TSP) in consultation with the designated supervisor and the Deans of PhD Studies . In the TSP the individual doctoral timeline is set out in detail. This will include, for instance, training courses to be followed to assist in the research.

Evaluation Meeting

Towards the end of the first year an evaluation meeting is held.  The progress of the research is reviewed by a committee including the supervisor, co-supervisor, an external member and the  Dean of PhD Studies, on the basis of the research proposal and a chapter of the dissertation or article. The teaching done and participation on the PhD Training Programme are also reviewed.

More Information

General information about doctoral studies, doctoral theses and the PhD Training Programme can be found in the Rules and Policies .

A PhD Fellow is not just a PhD Candidate, but also has a substantial teaching component amounting to around 35% of the total period. In addition, the courses in the PhD Training Programme are followed. Since the position of PhD Fellow encompasses more tasks than research alone, the appointment is for six years.

A PhD Fellow is appointed for six years, with the possibility to terminate the contract in the intermediate period. Within three months of the commencement of the appointment, the PhD Fellow draws up an individual Training en Supervision Plan (TSP) in consultation with the supervisor and Deans of PhD Studies . In the TSP, the individual PhD timeline is structured. This includes which courses will be followed to assist in the research.

After around one and a half years an evaluation meeting is held. The progress of the research is reviewed by a committee including the supervisor, co-supervisor, an external member and the  Dean of PhD Studies, on the basis of the research proposal and a chapter of the dissertation or article. The teaching done and participation on the PhD Training Programme is also reviewed.

Information about the position of PhD Fellows can be found under Rules and Policies for PhD fellows.

External doctoral candidates

The main task of a Contract PhD Candidate is to carry out doctoral research. This is done with funding from the government of the country of origin.

In general, the duration of the doctoral research is four years. Although a Contract PhD Candidate does not have an appointment at the faculty, the position is equal to appointed PhD Candidates when it comes to training, monitoring of progress and other work conditions (such as workplace, ICT facilities  etc.).

Towards the end of the first year an evaluation meeting is held. At this meeting a committee comprising the supervisor, co-supervisor, external member and Deans of PhD Studies reviews the progress of the research based on the research plan and a chapter of the dissertation or an article. The participation on the PhD Training Programme is also reviewed.

Information about the position of Contract PhD Candidates can be found under Rules and Policies for Contract PhD Candidates.

Leiden Law School also offers the possibility of pursuing a (non-funded) ‘external’ PhD within the Graduate School of Legal Research. Applications for these positions are accepted throughout the year.

Application Procedure

In order to become an External PhD Candidate you should have a research proposal which fits within the research carried out in the research programmes of the faculty.  A decision on an application for admission to the PhD programme can only be made on the basis of the completed and submitted online form  including the required attachments. The full application must include:

  • a specific, innovative and fairly elaborate proposal;
  • the name of a possible supervisor (professor) whose research interests and area of specialization fit your research proposal ( more information about research and potential supervisors );
  • a completed Master-degree which should be the equivalent of a LL.M. or Master degree obtained in The Netherlands including the corresponding list of grades;
  • an English language test score of 100 (TOEFL) or 7.0 (IELTS), unless the candidate is a native speaker;
  • at least one published article/chapter relevant to the field of the proposed research.

External PhD Candidates have to make their own arrangements for the funding of their research and living costs. External funding possibilities can be explored with your supervisor(s). Paid positions as employed PhD candidate at Leiden Law School are advertised at https://vacancies.leiden.edu .

Until now, becoming an external PhD candidate at Leiden University in most cases does not involve paying a fee.

However, some subdepartments which offer a PhD-track charge a fee: see for example the  International Institute of Air and Space Law ,  The Van Vollenhoven Institute  and the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies ).
