Ever since I first picked up a camera, it’s always been about connection. The more personal my work gets, the more I dig deeper for meaningful connections.

I’ve always loved creating themes, searching for big ideas. Sometimes they’re easy to find, other times it's a process. But experimentation is always a part of it. That’s how I keep everything fresh, exciting, and unknown.

This shoot—which happened in three parts—is an extension of my last two photo essays, which focused on utilizing my surroundings. I love creating a range with my subjects, and this was no exception. Abigail brought a playful enthusiasm everywhere we went.

I’m honored to be The Photographic Journal’s photographer-in-residence for 2020. Here's to the journey ahead.

Flower and nature photography: tips on making your images pop

How to capture gorgeous floral imagery and beautiful landscapes

Nature and flower photography is addictive once you practise and master all these tips and techniques below to create gorgeous imagery. Learn to master many of these easy technical  and practical ideas focusing on composition, backgrounds, lighting and other photo techniques you can look out for or easily manipulate, pre-visualize while you develop more camera skills to portray the best of nature and floral photography.

Tip – explore your garden or public gardens at different times of the day and observe how the light looks on these plants and flowers. You’ll notice that capture gorgeous details and scenes are usually not in the middle of the day but in the morning and late afternoon when the light is not so harsh and the golden hour does create a more inviting scene.

Here’s how to make your flowers and landscape photography pop!

There are many easy and simple things you can do to create amp up your flower, plant and landscape photography. Try all these techniques below and you’ll start developing a keen eye for what works personally in your photography.

Get really close to your subject

Of all the easiest flower photography ideas, getting those close up details of a grouping of flowers or even single flower blooms or isolating a single bloom becomes more dynamic and interesting as a composition. Using a dedicated macro lens allows for focusing on objects with all the fine details. Another alternative  would be to use a telephoto lens with zoom to focus on your subject in a focal range you are happy with.

IMG_4079

Cropping out distracting elements

When you do detailed photography of flowers in a presentation make sure to find simple backgrounds or clear up your background from cluttered distractions. You can easily move things around by changing positions of where you are taking the photograph and looking at different angles and places to focus on your subject. Try to crop out distracting or glaring details in the background and make those compositions tighter. Re-compose your images constantly to find the best compositions, take out unnecessary details and train your eye better to create more interesting viewpoints. Last, don’t be afraid of zooming tighter to get a close-up of your subject, your audience will spend more time looking at all the details in your photograph.

IMG_4181

Use a shallow depth of field

Along with cropping out distractions and doing close-up images,  changing your f-stop on digital SLR cameras to a shallow depth of field (usually around f2/8 – f/4, anything in a low aperture range) will make the backgrounds blend in and become softer. This in turn creates a pleasing background, and makes the subject pop out from the composition.

Focus on sharpness

If your main focus is on the flower, concentrate on highlighting the key details with your autofocus, and make sure they are spot on sharp. Target your autofocus directly on the main subject and then recompose the image to create a more pleasing composition. Larger groupings will require a bigger aperture like a f/9 to f/11 setting to get all the various details into focus so change your apertures accordingly. For selective focus, try switching to manual mode so you can manually focus sharpness to the appropriate areas of the subject  that you want to highlight.

Using a tripod especially in macro flower photography is helpful and using a remote release also helps tremendously in keeping the camera solid and stable.

Photograph on cloudy overcast days

Cloudy days are perfect for nature and flower photography because it creates an even filtered light on your subject so this is a great time to work on flowers, nature and isolated outdoor images that you want to capture.  Even light compliments the flower details and its delicate features, eliminating harsh shadows or bright hot spots on your subject.

IMG_4061

Try for backlighting your images

Backlight happens when the sun is directly in front of you and lights up the subject from behind. Flowers that are delicate and translucent, create a wonderful glow effect that brightens up the subject and creates a dynamic and glowing composition. Just make sure when you try this technique that you avoid any glare or flare-ups occurring to your camera lens and distracts from the overall image.

Try photographing during the ‘Golden Hour’

One of the basic nature photography ideas is to shoot during the Golden Hour. The early morning or early evening hours when the sun is close to the horizon presents the best warm light on any subject including plants and flowers. Try shooting during this timeframe when the golden light is happening, it is the best time to be outdoors and find some interesting subjects to photograph. Take the time to study how the light hits your subject, experiment, find the best angles to shoot and your photos will look incredible.

Avoid windy days

Windy days are very difficult to capture detail or macro images of flowers and its best to avoid taking pictures in this condition unless you are going for a different effect on your photography. The best situation is to take pictures of your subject in a  protected area away from the wind or try a different timeframes (like mornings)  when the wind factor is minimized. Last, take photos of your subject indoors if you can bring your arrangements or any subject indoors.

IMG_4160

Create a different viewpoint

Trying different angles and perspective will create more interesting and dynamic imagery to  your subject.  Photographing flowers from above, the bottom, behind, backlit or any other interesting angles will create a different take from the typical formats and will create better presentations. This is a great way to experiment and train your eye to see things differently and create unusual or interesting viewpoints with your photography. Looking at flowers from different vantage points and capturing something unique makes your images fresh and more exciting to view than the standard approaches to photographing flowers and plants.

Light it up

Any flowers that are in shade or in boring flat light can be lit up using reflectors or flash to add highlights and depth to the subject. Try to find the right balance of shade and light to best focus on your subject matter whether it is lit naturally or with other tools to highlight your subject.

This is a great time to be outdoors and enjoy nature, wildflowers or the beauty of a garden. Go outside, find something inspiring and enjoy experimenting with your camera. Try out any combinations of the techniques and tips mentioned above and your presentation and photography skills will improve.  Last, take a look at this earlier post I wrote earlier focusing on general tips on travel photography, using your camera and composition .

Photograph en masse

There’s nothing like capturing a whole field of wildflowers when the timing is perfect. Part of this situation requires planning ahead of time, checking to see where the wildflowers are starting to make an appearance and planning a time to actually go out there to shoot. when you make a little effort and plan the details, you’ll really be inspired to go out explore and be creative. It just takes a little bit of time and research to get you where you have all of the right opportunities to photograph something unique or inspiring.

Practise makes Perfect in your learning and photography

In the realm of photographing flowers and nature, the adage “practice makes perfect” holds true. Capturing the delicate details of a flower or the ethereal beauty of a natural landscape requires patience, skill, and a keen eye. With each session behind the camera, we refine our understanding of lighting, composition, and the nuances of nature. Through practice, we learn to anticipate the perfect moment to capture a dewdrop on a petal or the play of light through a forest canopy. We experiment with different angles, settings, and techniques, discovering what works best to convey the essence and magic of the natural world. It is through repeated practice, trial, and error that we develop our unique artistic style, mastering the art of nature and flower photography. So, embrace the mantra of “practice makes perfect,” and let each click of the shutter bring you closer to capturing the breathtaking beauty of flowers and the wonders of the natural world.

Hopefully these ideas and techniques will help you to practice and focus on your techniques and do this on a regular basis. Practice and experimenting constantly will help you to develop your eye and composition techniques in your nature and floral studies.

Photographing landscapes

This is where you really want to plan and research places near or a dream vacation that has stunning visuals. You can find some inspiration depending on your availability and location. Photography is a great way to enjoy and explore the places you visit. Experimenting with any of the techniques above will help you in creating stunning visuals as well as capturing the envionmental shots to really show a sense of place with people, animals and the landscape to highlight your photography captures.

Flower power: why blooms are an essential part of any garden

A homegrown bouquet is great for pollinators, a pleasure for people and a green alternative to buying from the cut-flower industry – so don’t forget to include them on your plot

L ast autumn, I visited Sissinghurst Castle Garden . November is not traditionally the best time for a pilgrimage to a world-famous garden, but the weather had been mild, so it had held on to the remnants of its summer glories. In the veg gardens, still busy with fennel and chard, I read a little chalkboard scribbled with a note about “companion planting”. The gardeners had planted French marigold near the carrots to deter carrot fly, and poached egg plant to attract hoverflies, the larvae of which have an appetite for aphids. I realised that in my own garden, established but new to me, I had made a mistake. Overexcited by the prospect of growing veg to eat, I neglected to think much about flowers.

“Flowers are really important because they’re a key part of a plant’s life cycle,” says Poppy Okotcha , an ecological grower, forager and home cook, who has a devoted following on Instagram and is cultivating her own edible and medicinal forest garden in Devon. “Understanding those full life cycles, and how they play in with other creatures, whether insects or animals, including ourselves, is really important.”

Poppy Okotcha, ecological grower, forager and home cook.

Asking gardeners about their favourite flowers seems almost heretical nowadays, when the soil has been recognised as such a vital resource for wellbeing and productivity. It seems frivolous to focus on growing peonies. But flowers still have a vital role to play in modern gardens. “I think that the beauty of them is useful, and the fact that their beauty is really useful to us is an incredible thing,” says Okotcha. “It’s so good for our mental wellbeing. There is nothing much more enjoyable than sitting in a garden full of flowers. They’re so sensory, it is just such a wonderful experience to interact with them.”

Okotcha admits that she has a soft spot for calendula. “The flowers are amazing for pollinators. They are medicinal, they can be used as balms, they can be made into teas, and they are a great companion plant. They’re annuals, which means that you just sow the seeds in the spring and you’ll have lovely flowers by summertime.”

Artists have been drawn to the beauty of flowers for millennia; ancient Egyptian art depicts the decorative use of flowers in vases and flower bowls in homes. Most of us are familiar with the mood-enhancing properties of a fresh bunch of flowers brightening up a room, and it’s possible to grow or buy them ethically.

The SSAW Collective is a UK community of chefs, florists and growers who share a focus on nature-led practices, seasonality, and advocating for progressive changes in the food and floral industries. They sell cut flowers from their own fields, from April through to October. They had cyclamen on offer for Valentine’s Day – as well as a cheeky poster of a bunch of snowdrops asking the question, “Why buy roses in February?”

I spoke to two of its three founders, the florists and flower growers Olivia Wilson and Jess Geissendorfer (the third, Lulu Cox, is a chef with an interest in regenerative farming). Wilson and Geissendorfer are passionate about sustainability in the cut-flower industry, which has not received anywhere near the level of scrutiny as fashion or food.

“Essentially, over the last 50 years, with the development of a global flower culture industry, we’ve completely lost touch with what seasonality truly means. That is not necessarily the fault of florists, it’s just that people now can get roses all year round. This has created a nightmare situation where flowers are being grown in incredibly unnatural and harmful ways, and there’s not really any need for it,” says Wilson.

She says one key problems is a lack of labelling: “Customers, and even florists, aren’t able to find out the information about where and how their flowers are grown.”

One small step, suggests Geissendorfer, would be for consumers to reframe their expectations of cut flowers. “People want them to last a certain amount of time, and it just isn’t realistic for a natural product. A lot of people just plonk flowers in a vase and expect them to be okay and to last a really long time.”

White Cosmos, sweet peas and Solanum in the White Garden at Sissinghurst Castle, Kent.

I have to ask. What are their favourites? “I like all flowers,” says Wilson, diplomatically, “but I do have a soft spot for the ones that could go unnoticed, that are just there, doing their own thing, not asking too much. Something like a geum.”

Geissendorfer says she couldn’t name one favourite, but will admit that she likes poppies. “They’re quite a bitchy flower, because they don’t like being touched, but they look just as good in a field, or on a mound of weeds, as they do at the centre of a bridal bouquet.”

Both point out that there are plenty of varieties of cut-and-come-again flowers that people can grow in their own gardens, if they have available space. “You’ll have corridors for pollinators, and if you’re not using pesticides in your garden that can have such a huge, huge impact,” says Geissendorfer. “People don’t realise how much positive effect you could have on the environment, in your own garden.”

Flowers to try

Poached egg plant

Douglas’ meadowfoam / poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii) in flower, native to California and Oregon.

Loved by children for its resemblance to a poached egg, as well as by predatory insects such as hoverflies, which should help out with any aphid problems in your garden.

Nasturtium close view of one scarlet red orange flower with yellow throat and some leaves

This annual is one for the kitchen gardeners, as its flowers, seeds and leaves are all edible. “They’re genuinely delicious. The flowers are so peppery, and the leaves are really lovely to eat as well,” says Jess Geissendorfer. Look at Poppy Okotcha’s Instagram for a great post on pickled nasturtium seeds.

Pink Cosmos flowers with blue sky

Cosmos come in many shapes and sizes, and often resemble fireworks. Pollinators love the colourful flowers, which can be cut and brought inside. A tip from the SSAW Collective is to dip them in hot water for 15 seconds, then in cold water, which should help them last longer in a vase.

Coneflowers

Close up of colourful Rudbeckia in a garden border

Rudbeckia, also known as black-eyed Susans, flower from late summer to mid-autumn, keeping vibrant colour in the garden way past the summer boom. In winter, the seedheads remain an attractive feature, and provide food and shelter for wildlife.

A patch of snowdrops

Okotcha says bulbs are a good place for novices to start: “They’re pretty foolproof, you put them in the ground and they just get on with it.” In spring, she takes notes of the flowers she spots growing and then orders bulbs in the autumn. “One of my favourites are snowdrops. They’re bloom early in the year, and it’s a lovely, welcome sign of spring.”

What Solar Eclipse-Gazing Has Looked Like for the Past 2 Centuries

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

  • Share full article

In a black-and-white photo from 1945, nine men, some in military uniforms, stand in the middle of a New York City street. They are holding a small piece of what looks like glass or a photographic negative above their heads to protect their eyes as they watch the eclipse. The original border of the print, as well as some numbers and crop marks drawn onto it, are visible.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen, Fridtjof Nansen and Sigurd Scott Hansen observing a solar eclipse while on a polar expedition in 1894 .

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Visitors viewed a solar eclipse at an observatory in Berlin in the mid-1930s.

A family set up two telescopes in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1963. The two children placed stones on the base to help steady them.

An astronomer examined equipment for an eclipse in a desert in Mauritania in June 1973. We credit the hot climate for his choice in outfit.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

A crowd gathered around a basin of water dyed with dark ink, waiting for the reflection of a solar eclipse to appear, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1995.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

pictorial essay about flower

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

The total solar eclipse is today: Get the latest forecast and everything you need to know

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.
