Football Manager 2021 was released worldwide on PC, Mac, iOS and Android on November 24th 2020. Football Manager 2021 Touch followed on December 1st 2020, with the Nintendo Switch™ edition completing the line-up on December 15th. This year also marked Sports Interactive’s first console release in over a decade as we returned to Xbox with Football Manager 2021 Xbox Edition. 

The FM21 development cycle was unlike any other faced by the studio as they, like almost every other business the world over, had to adapt in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the game’s development was done remotely and Microsoft Teams meetings quickly became the order of the day. 

Despite the challenges the team faced, FM21 was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans and media alike. Steam reviews for the game were unprecedentedly positive, while FM21 hit one million sales faster than any of the studio’s previous releases.

FM21’s headline feature set introduced a number of changes to key areas of the game including the interaction system, matchday experience and the recruitment module. Gestures replaced tones to offer managers more options when getting their message across to their players, something also bolstered by revamped press conferences and new Quick Chats.

MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE

Every fixture was turned into a true spectacle with a new build-up and post-match experience while animation, lighting and graphical improvements that delivered the best-looking 3D match simulation in the series. xG also made its debut, in conjunction with SciSports , as part of a wider revamp to the stats and analysis in the game.

TAKE YOUR RECRUITMENT TO NEW LEVELS

Scouting and making the next move in the transfer market became all the more focused with brand-new recruitment meetings which allowed for greater forward planning. For the first time, managers could also approach agents directly about a player’s interest in joining a club, mimicking how most of the big deals are done across the real world of football. 

CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Managers were able to savour their previous campaign and revel in their success like never before. The brand-new season review picked out the season’s highlights and team’s top performers in a dynamic presentation, while title presentations were given the billing they deserve. Blood, sweat and tears go into winning trophies and in FM21, those moments mattered more than ever.  

FM21 Mobile was our most polished edition in the series so far, boasting several features that took the game’s detail level to new heights. 

Managers could set up feeder clubs and arrange their own pre-season friendlies for the first time, while they also had three additional nations to manage in after Argentina, Mexico and Canada entered the fray.

Tactics saw a complete revamp, with managers now benefitting from the tactical templates already in our other titles. Three new player roles were also added to further tactical customisation, while set-pieces were re-defined.

Interaction was also given an overhaul with Squad Hierarchy and Player Social Groups introduced to give the manager a fuller picture of team morale. Managers could also set their Club Captain and could praise or criticize their players.

Xbox players across the world were delighted as Football Manager returned to Xbox for the first time in over a decade with FM21 Xbox Edition. 

Modelled on our popular Touch series, FM21 Xbox Edition offered players a bespoke edition with all of the detail and realism of the Football Manager series, carefully crafted for optimal performance with the Xbox controller.

FM21 Xbox made use of Microsoft’s Play Anywhere technology which allowed managers to kick-off a career on console and then pick-up on any Windows 10 PC while Smart Delivery allowed managers to purchase the game once and play it across the Xbox ecosystem.

FM21 Touch introduced a host of graphical improvements and a redesigned match display that showed more of the action than ever before and created an all-new gameday experience. Touchline ‘Shouts’ made their debut, allowing players to motivate, inspire or demand more from their players from the sidelines.

Increased analysis in Team Reports, news items and end of season summaries showed a team’s strengths and illustrated exactly how they stacked up against the opposition and how to exploit their weaknesses. FM21 Touch also brought across a number of features from FM21 such as our new ‘expected goals’ system (SIxG), end of season presentation elements and the raft of match engine AI, animation and graphical improvements that made it the best match engine in the series to date.

Football manager 2016 review: presentation makes perfect, if you've been put off by the complexity in the past, give it a go this year..

At one point it was all going smoothly. Inspired by Jurgen Klopp, my Liverpool team was playing a high-pressure, high-tempo game that even the Premier League elite of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea struggled to compete against. Yes, in this personal football fantasy, Chelsea were still very much considered "elite."

That was last season. More accurately, that was two-thirds of last season. The back end of the year signalled that things weren't as cosy as I had thought. A shocking end to the season saw my team drop out of the Champions League spot, the lack of top European competition making it impossible to attract the kind of player I had placed on my wish list earlier on: the likes of Marquinhos, Pjanic, and Carrasco.

Things aren't going well in the new season either—my managerial tenure at Liverpool is under threat.

In the grand scheme of things, this is hardly a Football Manager sob story. In past games I have endured much worse. But while the stories of others could legitimately be described as nightmares, it's the downs that make the ups worth living. If the going gets really tough, however, Football Manager 2016 gives you a way out, letting you back out of the reality simulator and into something wholly fantastical.

Of all the many new features Sports Interactive has chucked into Football Manager this year—and there are many —it's the new Fantasy Draft mode that's the most exciting. It simulates the world of fantasy football by letting you create your own dream team. Starting with a fixed budget (jointly decided beforehand from a minimum of budget £20 million to a maximum of £250 million), each manager builds a squad from scratch, the aim being to send them out online to compete head-to-head. Options include whether you compete in a league or knockout competition, and how many players are allowed to enter.

Obviously, budget is the most crucial element. While you can sign Messi or Ronaldo if you've got a bigger budget, the most interesting way to approach the draft is to limit the cash and force managers to think first about tactics, rather than personnel. Whatever the case, if you don't have a clear gameplan in mind before the draft starts you'll find yourself floundering in the later rounds trying to fill gaping holes in the squad with whatever scraps of funding you have left. This is a particular problem if you're playing with the maximum 32 players, where quality signings are snapped up with alarming speed.

Fantasy Draft is a great addition, particularly if you've been put off by the general slog of starting from scratch in Football Manager in the past. Plus, if you want to, you can even spend time creating your own managerial avatar in the mode. However, as you can see, the results can be... questionable.

First Look: Football Manager 2022

Football Manager 2022 won’t be released until November 9, but Iain Macintosh spent the weekend playing a preview version. So what does he make of it?

How good is the new Football Manager? That’s a tough question. Let’s be honest, no one knows how good Football Manager is until some point in December when you’re three or four seasons deep and talking about a talented new-gen wing-back like he’s a favourite nephew. This is a game that takes some serious time to assess. So please bear in mind that all of what follows is based on 20 hours on an Alpha preview version of the game that isn’t finished and may or may not bear a strong resemblance to whatever appears on November 9.

But with that disclaimer duly flagged, let me make two predictions: first, that some sections of the passionate FM community will deem this to be the most controversial release in several years and, second, that by the time we get to December we’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.  

There will be two waves of controversy. The first will come when hundreds of thousands of people download a game that really doesn’t look very different from its predecessor at all. The second wave will make landfall later that evening when people start playing matches and discover that it actually is quite different and they can’t win so easily now.

Let’s start with the cosmetic stuff. If someone stood behind me while I was playing this pre-release version of FM22, it would be some time before they realised it wasn’t FM21. The sharper-eyed observer might note a new Data Hub option on the sidebar, or possibly some tweaks to the presentation of coach reports and scouting reports, but generally speaking, FM22 looks pretty much the same as FM21 right up until the moment you play your first match.  

Do you remember when you first encountered a high definition television? No one ever thought they needed HD, because normal D had served us so well for years. But once you’d set eyes on that increased clarity, you knew you could never go back. Well, that’s how you’re going to feel about the new animation engine.  

I didn’t have a problem with the old one. I often used 2D anyway as it made it easier to evaluate your team and it didn’t make my old laptop sound like an ascending helicopter. But this is a big step forward.

I’m not nearly clever enough to understand precisely what they’ve done, but let it be enough for me to say that they’ve made all the little footballers behave much more like little footballers. These boys twist and jink and swerve and sidestep in a way that doesn’t just look more natural, it means more realistic passing options.  

And you are going to need more realistic passing options now because, while very little of the FM chassis has changed, under the hood they’ve given the match engine some serious attention.

There is no “right” way to play FM, but if you’ve enjoyed great success on recent versions it’s probably because your team used pressing and counter-pressing. The preset gegenpress tactic wasn’t a magic bullet — you still needed the right players and the right sort of training — but it was more fruitful than other options.

This new match engine will punish tired players. It will make them look like recruits at boot camp. Under the old regime, the penalties of intense pressing were light. Your players might look a little sluggish — a little slow to respond — but it wasn’t until the last few weeks of the season when it would really catch up with them. Now you may see them blowing out of their bottoms long before the final whistle of a game in August.

No longer will it be an overstatement when your assistant manager tells you that a player has, “given all they have to give”. When these guys are running on vapours, they simply stop running. It’s now a case of “can’t press, won’t press” and often a case of “can’t pass” as well. And this is where the trouble will start. Because people don’t like not being good at this game.

There is a glorious stage of a successful FM career when tinkering with your team feels like tending to a bonsai tree. A little cut here, a tiny alteration there and then you ride that “continue” button into the sunset. People love that — it vindicates their faith in their understanding of football and it makes them feel warm and cosy. Well, I regret to inform them that winter is coming.  

I took Tottenham for a spin in my preview build. I had the first team playing controlled possession, the Under-23s playing gegenpress and the Under-18s with a possession-based back five (purely so I could see the new wide centre-back in action).

The first team performed well, despite the absence of most of their best players on post-Euro holidays. They moved the ball nicely, grew in confidence as cohesion increased and they only conceded twice in pre-season. The gegenpressing Under-23s were far more dramatic, rattling in early goals but repeatedly shipping late ones. As for the Under-18s, they were notable mostly for having a centre-back who played like a young Frank Lampard.  

But for all three teams, the closing stages of matches were similarly dangerous. Even the first-team players, with their more sedate tactics, were affected as relatively simple passes frequently started going astray. Dele Alli, I am looking in your direction.  

It was all manageable, of course. You make a few substitutions, tweak a few roles, drop the lines deeper, slow the pace of play. You can guard against fatigue. But you can’t ignore it.

And don’t worry, the gegenpress tactic still works. In fact, I eventually started using it for my Spurs seniors. You just have to be careful. If you take a 2-0 lead into the last stages of the game, DO NOT leave them to it so that you can go and make a cup of tea. Be aware that you have to guide them home.  

This means a far more realistic experience, but I wouldn’t expect everyone in the FM Community to see it this way. Expect the phrase “match engine borked” to trend within hours of release because anyone who tries to blindly prevail on FM22 with FM21 tactics is going to get slapped across the chops with so many late goals that it’s going to look like bullying.

But I think I like that. Real football is so compelling because, for all the money and the glamour and the hype, it’s 11 humans against 11 humans and humans are fragile and fallible.  

Real football won’t let you send the same players out to relentlessly press and counter-press for 90 minutes, twice a week. Football Manager 2022 won’t either. So, yes, there will probably be some backlash when the Beta version lands later this month. But when it all dies down and we’ve had two or three months to immerse ourselves, I think we’ll see FM22 as a tangible step forward from FM21.

what subject is it for, what are you expected to do, what level is it (school/college/uni). give us some more info and i'd love to help!

school and english just expected to make a 10 minute presentation on any subject so i chose fm

I did an FM website for my ICT AS level a couple of years back, I thought it turned out pretty great. Examiner must have been a FIFA Manager player though

I would suggest you zoom in towards some kind of main focus or point, otherwise you'll end up with a loose confederation of thoughts that don't really go anywhere which is normally the danger in a presentation with a length approaching ten minutes.

You could talk about how we are all drawn into the game and get to live out our football dreams within the game as the reality is we are all guff at football

i haven't been given a specific focus just to make a presentation but i would believe that it is intended to be a piece designed to inform, i was planning on focusing a lot on how it could be seen as a substitute for not being good at football as a sport but still have a footballing brain, the newgens are also something i would like to mention because they aren't something that you see in any other game really. Also i'm planning on starting off with a brief yet informative history of the series as a whole dating back to the CM days till now

UEFA Handbook of Football Association Management (UEFA HFM)

Now in its fourth edition, this handbook offers a contemporary and comprehensive introduction to football association management. Fully updated and revised throughout, it is composed of ten self-contained chapters. A number of illustrative examples have been included in each to highlight particular aspects of national association management, together with an interview with a professional expert working in the specific field addressed in the chapter.

Chapter 1 provides a detailed description of the way football is organised in Europe and around the world.

It introduces important organisations such as FIFA, the IFAB and UEFA and explains their unique and joint responsibilities and how they interact with other key stakeholders such as the European Club Association (ECA), the European Leagues and FIFPro. It presents the football environment in which each national association has to function in addition to the national environment it shares with all organisations operating in its country.

It is authored by Sean Hamil from Northern Ireland.

Chapter 2 shows how a national association should set itself strategic objectives for the realisation of its vision and mission, which is, generally speaking, to promote and develop football in its country.

These objectives depend on the national association’s external and internal environments, which first have to be analysed. They must then be detailed in an action plan that allocates human, financial and information resources within a given timeframe for implementation. Strategic management is essential for any organisation nowadays, including national associations, as they evolve more and more in a competitive environment and have many stakeholders to satisfy. Chapter 2 shows how to tackle this issue.

Chapter 3 presents the operational management of a football association. The chapter is divided into four parts.

Human resource management explores motivating teams and the tools to manage people including hiring and progression. The financial management section explains the basics of finance and accounting. Discovering opportunities presents the need to understand the customer but also competitors, technologies and other organisations to deliver customer satisfaction. The last section describes managing projects.

The third chapter is authored by Antonio Davila from Spain.

Chapter 4 focuses on an introduction to marketing, and covers some of the rudimentary concepts and issues with which marketers should normally be familiar.

The first part of this chapter examines the nature of both sport marketing and of the sport product. Secondly, the chapter explores branding and marketing communication, which addresses issues pertaining to product differentiation and how consumers and markets are informed about the existence of products. The third part addresses issues in licencing, ticketing and hospitality, whilst the fourth part focuses on media rights.

The fourth chapter is authored by Simon Chadwick from England.

Chapter 5 illustrates the importance of managing communication, the media and public relations within a national association.

This topic is broadly divided into two sections: the first outlines the important role that internal communications can play in ensuring the success of external communications and the impact that public relations can have in developing a good communications strategy, while the second delves into the practical aspects of media operations and highlights the growing role that social media can play.

Chapter 6 elaborates on various aspects of football event and volunteer management.

Organising events can be a unique opportunity for football associations to showcase one of their main assets to their stakeholders. However, the organisation of a sports event is a project because it involves achieving a fixed objective within a given time and mobilising limited resources to provide a fixed level of service in a sustainable way. Football events in particular have special characteristics that make their management quite unique, one of which is the inclusion of volunteers to help plan, stage and maintain the legacy of the event. These events are much more than just competitions between teams and players. They can forge an identity and create solidarity, bringing people together, giving them a sense of belonging and contributing to the development of the host region. This leads to the creation of a positive impact and legacy. Years of preparation might be required to produce a few days of sporting celebration, but these few days can continue to have an impact over more than a generation.

Chapter 7 stresses the importance of football and social responsibility (FSR) as an emerging field in football management, outlines a general theoretical framework of FSR, and provides some examples of FSR issues (the cases of diversity and inclusion and climate action).

Based on an integrative FSR approach, it sketche more practical aspects by discussing eight crucial elements of FSR strategy development which are: vision and mission, stakeholder management, issue management, the Sustainable Development Goals, a FSR path model, FSR implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and FSR reporting and communication.

Chapter 8 evaluates the challenges and opportunities in continuing the development of girls and women’s football.

The chapter discusses this development as an ongoing change process, dividing its evaluation into three parts: the context of women’s football, the content of the development goals for girls and women’s football and the processes whereby participation, governance and commercial sustainability goals can be achieved.

Chapter 9 illustrates the importance of football development within a national association.

As the core business of a football association is football, the development of football will be the number one priority in the strategic plans for shaping the future. The way the future game is being developed in the daily work will impact the success of the association. The topic is divided into four sections: the first one highlights the importance and the way to create a clear vision about the ‘future’ game of the nation. The next three sections focus on the main areas that impact the development of this future game: first of all, the growth and flourishing of grassroots football, secondly the education of coaches and finally the development of the elite players. These four areas are the building blocks for developing the game and working on a common framework and masterplan for the future of football.

Chapter 10 is an introduction to sports law as it relates to football.

The enormous commodification of the game has created an inevitable framework of open public discussion focusing on the ability of governing bodies to regulate properly and appropriately the business of football. This crucial topic is divided into four sections: the first outlines how sports law consists of various set of rules. The second section describes FIFA regulations relating to contract stability, training compensation and the solidarity mechanism. The third section addresses the legal problematic of match-fixing and the last section covers the disciplinary proceedings before FIFA, UEFA and the CAS.
