How to Dress for a Class Presentation

With these tips, you’ll be sure to be ready for your next presentation.

Class presentations can be nerve-racking, especially if there are a large number of people in your class. However, one of the things you can do to make sure you are prepared is finding the right outfit. Dressing up for a class presentation doesn’t necessarily have to be hard. Below, I’ve shared some tips on what to wear for class presentations plus a few sample outfits to get you started.

As a bonus, I’ve included winter coats in two of the looks, as it’s freezing outside right now and I know can be hard to find the right coat to go with a business-casual outfit!

Class Presentation Outfit #1

Class presentations are a great time to test out some business casual outfits. They aren’t exactly formal (so you don’t need to go ultra conservative), but you should dress up like you’re going to an interview for a creative job or a business meeting somewhere relatively casual.

To start, I like to go with dress pants. It’s important that your dress pants aren’t skin-tight like leggings but aren’t loose like sweatpants either — fit is so key and you’d be surprised how many people get this wrong. 

You don’t have to sacrifice style to look presentable so it’s totally fine to wear a slightly trendy blouse like the one pictured above. As long as your blouse isn’t low-cut, too tight, oversized, or showing a logo, you should be good to go! A pretty blouse paired up with dress pants shows that you are presentable and conservative but also that you value your style and sense of fashion. 

I am a fan of ballet flats for their comfort and conservative look, so I chose a pretty suede pair for this look. As you probably know, sneakers are always inappropriate for a class presentation. Winter is just days away, so if it’s too cold or rainy to wear flats where you live, you can always wear sneakers or boots to class and then change into your flats! 

As with any business casual look, it’s important not to over-accessorize. Small stud earrings and a dainty necklace are perfect jewelry choices. You don’t want the jewelry to take away from your speech. Wearing some bold red lipstick will help you feel self-assured and confident, but keep the rest of your makeup muted for balance. You probably won’t need textbooks on presentation day, so a small leather backpack with the most important essentials is fine.

To finish this outfit, you’re going to need a coat to keep you warm. This classic pea coat is the perfect thing to wear on your way to class — it matches well with the professional vibe of the ensemble.

Class Presentation Outfit #2

For those of you who want to treat this class presentation like it’s an interview or you’re working for a conservative company, this outfit will be best for you.

For starters, a nice white button-up shirt is any easy go-to for any business setting. Throw a pretty sweater over top and make sure you have your collar showing above the sweater’s neckline. This combination makes your outfit look fashionable but also keeps you warm. Then, pair this outfit up with a thick pencil skirt in basic black. I love a skirt that already comes with a belt like the one pictured above — it’s an extra accessory that adds a little pop and accents your waist.

Because it is cold outside, don’t forget to wear tights! The thickness of your tights is really dependent on you and your tolerance for the cold but anything 60 denier and above is great. 

To complete this outfit, basic black pointed toe heels are appropriate and professional. Again, don’t go overboard on the accessories — here I just added a simple watch and a basic tote bag. Now, you’re ready for your presentation! 

Class Presentation Outfit #3

You don’t have to go completely conservative for a presentation — if you’re  interested in being a showstopper and playing with color, this is the look for you! 

Start off with a button-up shirt, again in a neutral like white. It can be same shirt as the one in outfit #2 but for purposes of showing you another option, I’ve chosen a sleeveless top here. Next, choose a blazer in a bold color like the one pictured above. Then, pair it up with classic dress pants à la outfit #1. 

Now it’s time for extras! For some fun pops of color, add kitten heels in a similar color to the blazer. Then add some rose gold jewelry that’s subtle yet eye-catching. After you’re done with the presentation, make sure you have a winter coat to keep you warm and a pretty backpack to hold any papers you’ve picked up. To ensure that you are warm, a scarf is essential!

Psychology plays a role in presentations. Whether it’s the colors we choose for our slides, how we use our body language to communicate, the presentation aids we use and right down to clothing on our backs, each element of a presentation needs to be carefully curated for our intended audience.

What To Wear For A Casual Presentation

Let’s begin with an outfit good for any occasion.

Throughout your career, you’ll be faced with both formal and informal presentations . More often than not, you’ll be presenting more informal presentations than formal. With the frequency being higher for informal or casual presentations, we need to make sure your closet is well equipped for the occasion.

To be clear, there is nothing too defining of a casual presentation other than that the timing you have to prepare is essentially non-existent and it’s usually presented to a smaller audience. Casual presentations can spring up at any time so the outfit you wear should really reflect who you are on a regular basis.

A casual presentation outfit should be one you feel confident in. It should speak to your character and ensure that you’re not portraying to be someone you’re not. Although we prefaced earlier that your presentation outfit should be adapted to the audience you’re presenting to, it’s going to be quite difficult to do that with a casual presentation as these types of presentations just spring up.

Your natural sphere of influence will help dictate how you dress for a casual presentation as this is the audience you’ll likely be presenting to.

If you spend most of your time in an office environment, a business casual outfit might be the right outfit.

If you’re a trades professor teaching young apprentices how to master a trade, then dirty overalls might be the casual presentation outfit for you.

What To Wear For A Presentation In University

Throughout your university studies, you’ll be required to present individually and in groups from first year to your final year seminars. Depending on the class, you might even be graded on your outfit. For example, many courses in BBA programs require you to present in business formal attire as if you were out in the real world.

Depending on the class, the requirement might be different, but it never hurts to be the best dressed person in the room.

You’ll want to draw inspiration from the real word and dress either business casual or business formal.

Unlike the real world where you’ll be earning “adult money”, in university you need to be savvy on a budget. Consider shopping at chain stores like H&M and Zara where you can suits and dresses which aren’t brand names yet are still fashionable.

You’ll want to avoid anything too flashy like a red dress. Although it’s important to attract attention and keep your audience engaged, you don’t want them to be distracted with your outfit.

You’ve graduated from university and are now working in the corporate world.

Depending on the industry you find a job in, your employer will have different dress code expectations. You’ll likely be asked to dress either business casual or business formal.

We’ve broken down the two into their own categories to help you better understand each one.

Business Casual Outfit

With most companies adopting a business casual dress code, you’ll likely be placed in a work environment that adopts a business casual outfit approach.

Business casual takes the key elements and ideas of a business formal outfit such as neutral tone colors and dress pants while getting rid of the signature elements like a suit jacket.

However, if you’d still like to add a bit of flair to your outfit, both men and women can throw a sports blazer on top and keep it unbuttoned or do up the second button to keep it interesting.

Business Formal Outfit

Business formal outfits are timeless.

For the men, a classic, old-fashioned navy suit would be your best outfit for a business formal setting.

For the women, you can’t go wrong with a skirt and a blouse. Feel free to swap the skirt with dress pants should you feel more comfortable wearing pants.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize your outfit as well. As boring as the corporate world may seem, it doesn’t have to be completely boring.

Consider adding a watch or some jewelry to add a pit of pop and personality to the outfit. They can act as great icebreakers and speaking points and also act as a sign of success.

What To Wear For A Presentation At A Conference

Depending on the conference, you’re best to wear a business casual outfit or a business formal outfit with a few exceptions.

The exceptions being modifications to your outfit depending on the venue.

Unlike a business meeting which may be done in a corporate office with standard office lighting, a presentation at a conference might have a stage, professional lighting and unique presentation aids such as green screens should the presentation be recorded for a later date.

If the venue has stage lights, avoid wearing a shiny suit. Instead, opt for a matte finish option.

If your venue has a background such as black curtains, avoid a black suit. You’ll appear to be a floating head in videos and images.

With the advancement of technology, more presentations are being held as virtual presentations . With a video conference you can get away with less by only worrying about what will be seen in the frame such as your shirt, hair or blouse.

At the end of the day, your outfit is only part of the many presentation aids you can incorporate into your presentation to make it stand out .

9 Things to Wear (and 3 to Avoid) for a Presentation

While the occasion may not come around too often, more likely than not, you’ll have to present your own ideas at work at some point. And before you’re standing in front of your bosses and colleagues sharing that business proposal or pitch, figuring out  what to wear for a presentation should be the least of your worries.

Once you’ve practiced your speech a few times and prepped the room, all that’s left is to dress the part. To take away the added stress of finding the right outfit for your big moment, we tapped Lauren McGoodwin, founder and CEO of Career Contessa , for her best advice on what to wear based on your work environment.

“When dressing for a presentation, it’s important to wear something you’re comfortable in, and something that makes you feel confident,” says McGoodwin. In a formal setting, she recommends a full suit . “I’d recommend going with a fitted black or navy suit, comfortable heel, and classic hair.”

If your office has a more creative flair, don’t be afraid to let that show through your look. “There’s room to experiment, but you still want to keep it professional with fitted pieces, such as a  colorful pencil skirt or a long-sleeve dress,” McGoodwin tells us.

Working at a startup? A casual environment still calls for a level of professionalism during certain moments, and a presentation is no exception. “Denim is pretty widely accepted in the startup environment, but keeping the professional tone, I’d recommend a  dark wash and adding a great blazer .”

McGoodwin also suggests leaving anything that restricts your ability to move at home—after all, this type of meeting requires gestures and movement in the room. She says to leave those ripped jeans, loose-fitting tops, and teetering heels at home for another time. Now, shop our favorite looks to ace your next presentation.

How to Dress for a Presentation: Everything You Need to Know

You're standing in front of a room full of people. All eyes are on you.

Presenting to a group of people can be challenging even for seasoned presenters, but get it right and they can open up a world of opportunities. Yet your content isn't the only thing that needs to be valuable and on point when you are on stage speaking.

Your visual presentation, including your personal style and clothing, also needs to be spot on. Why?

First and foremost it's for confidence.

For most people, being in front of a room full of people can be incredibly nerve wracking. Wearing a well-considered outfit that makes you look and feel professional helps to boost your confidence and give you a sense of presence.

The audience will immediately see and sense this, and that helps give you credibility.

People will start to judge you as soon as you walk onto a stage or are standing in front of a group of people. They will be wondering if you are worth their attention and forming their first impression of you. This gives you a golden window of opportunity to influence the audience's assumption of you, establish your authority and give them confidence in what's to come.

So, what should you wear on stage when speaking?

First things first, you need to think about the type and style of event.

How many people are you presenting to?

Is it a day or night time event?

Where is the event being held?

Will there be other presenters?

Who are you presenting to?

Knowing the above information first is key to helping you select the right outfit that will support your personal brand image.

Major conferences will often provide dress guidelines for presenters and tend to prefer clean, tailored designs, although this can depend on industry (i.e the technology industry is well known for being very casual; the arts industry is much more creative and fashion forward).

If you are speaking at a major conference and aren't provided any guidelines, don't be afraid to ask what is preferred and/or expected.

Have a look at past conference photos to get a feel for the event, and the audience. If these aren't available, ask the event organiser for the information and then aim to dress at least one level up from your audience to position yourself with authority.

Below are some example outfits that are professional and contemporary, and work well for speaking engagements for female professionals and leaders.

Notice that items are clean with classic/contemporary lines and with pops of colour. This ensures that you stand out, without being too distracting for your audience.

What should you wear if your event is virtual?

A business smart casual look is usually best for virtual events. This maintains a sense of professionalism while not feeling too overdressed for an online forum.

If you're a female professional or leader, smart blouses and shirts work well. If you'd like to add another layer of authority, you can opt for a blazer.

You also need to consider the background of your Zoom call or video conference. You want to make sure your outfit doesn't blend in too much with your background.

What colour should you wear for a presentation?

I always recommend to wear colour when speaking on stage. This is a time when you want to stand out and the easiest way to do this is through the use of colour.

The only exception to this would be if black (or another neutral colour) is one of your BEST colours and there is some design element to the outfit which adds a point of interest and prevents it from looking flat.

But keep in mind that colour is always far more interesting than a neutral outfit and it makes you far more memorable.

Choose a colour that really flatters you – a professional colour analysis is invaluable to helping you understand the exact tones and shades that make you look your best.

Different colours will transmit different messages, so decide what you want your outfit to say and how you want to be perceived:

Red stimulates the physical senses and can be worn to feel confident and to attract attention. A red dress will say ‘I am here’. Red projects authority and can be worn to show you are in control.

Blue is the most universally liked colour, so it is a safe colour and is ideal in serious, formal settings. It indicates confidence, reliability, trust and tranquility.

Pink is a good colour to relax tense relations and generate sympathy as it's calm and feminine. The colour of hope, it inspires positive outcomes and is non threatening. It's perfect for an elegant tea time. Too much bright pink can create a childish image but it can be combined with darker shades for more sophistication and strength.

Orange relates to social communication. It is physically and mentally stimulating and gets people thinking and talking. Wear orange to feel positive and uplifted. However its not recommended to wear too much orange in formal or elegant settings as orange can also transmit superficiality.

Yellow can awaken greater confidence, enthusiasm and optimism. It can uplift our spirit, and those around us, quickly. Be cautious in very sunny places when the colour can appear electric in bright light.

Purple is a sophisticated colour, associated with diplomacy, luxury and royalty. It usually communicates the finest possible quality, however the wrong tone of purple can appear cheap and nasty, faster than any other colour. It indicates creativity and spirituality.

Green is an emotionally positive colour, synonymous with tranquility and strongly connected with nature. It will help sustain a good mood within yourself and your surroundings.

Choose solid colours or a simple pattern or print but avoid really fussy or large prints, which will only distract your audience from the message that you are trying to get across.

What styles of clothing are best?

Your clothing should fit well and be contemporary, without being too fashion forward. Clean lines and tailored pieces of clothing will help to position you as professional and credible.

Great options include:

A pencil or tailored A-line skirt and blouse

A shift dress with a blazer

A wrap dress

A pant suit

Pants and a blouse

Along with your clothing, be sure to consider your grooming. You hair, skin, nails and makeup should also look smart and professional and complete your look.

Your best outfit for public speaking i s something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Always prepare your outfit prior and road test it. By that I mean walk around it and make sure you can move freely and comfortably. I also recommend taking a quick video of yourself. Testing your outfit first means that you'll avoid any fashion faux pas's on stage - such as perspiring in non-breathable or heavy fabrics, wearing fabrics that crinkle easily or are too sheer or too tight. All of these will be magnified ten fold when you have a spotlight on you.

When I landed my internship this summer I was  stoked. An internship in my chosen career field the year before I graduate college? Score!

I had plenty of prior experience in that field so I knew what I was doing and I was excited to get started. However – this internship required me to work in an office setting and dress in business casual attire… which had me lost.

I remember preparing for my interview and pretty much doing a fashion show for my roommate asking her opinion on what blouse was better to wear and whether or not to opt for the blazer. I remember being lost on what was appropriate to wear for big class presentations (and trust me, as a Communications major I have a  lot of class presentations) and having to borrow stuff from friends because I didn’t own slacks.

Fast forward to today, 7 months later ( wow! ) and I consider myself a pro in dressing business casual in a way that is appropriate for a professional workplace yet trendy and comfortable enough for a college student. I now  love to piece together outfits for work with just the right accessories.

1. Solid dress

I’ll admit it – I hated heels until I started my internship. I got these simple and  comfortable heels and my position on wearing heels is totally transformed! They really step up any outfit and took away any feeling that I had of not fitting in in my business casual clothes away.

8. Cardigan

I don’t know about you but my office is  freezing. Even when it’s 100 degrees outside it is about 65 in the office, which calls for a simple cardigan to throw over any outfit to warm me up a bit!

WHAT TO WEAR: Presentation

Before we can embrace summer vacation, we have to endure espresso-filled late nights and early mornings spent cramming for finals. On top of finals, this Fashionista had to prepare for a class presentation.

Class presentations are a common occurrence for students toward the end of the year, where everything they learned over the year comes together. They require practice, notecards and a killer outfit that boosts confidence. For this Fashionista, that outfit includes colorful jeans , a textured sweater , a bold necklace and ballet flats .

One thing to keep in mind when dressing for a presentation is comfort and mobility. Having to adjust a top or pull down a skirt can be distracting to the audience and disrupts your focus. The ability to reach out an arm or walk around is crucial when picking out your outfit.

Don’t be afraid to add bold accessories. Just because there’s a dress code doesn’t mean you have to avoid adding personal style or character. Places like  Kendra Scott  or Baublebar are my go-to online destinations for jewelry.

There’s something about dressing up and looking nice that enhances my performance and boosts my confidence. Why dress to impress others when you can dress for your own well being?

For example, if you feel that wearing bold and striking colors will enhance your presentation, then wear bold and striking colors.

Keep in mind that the content of your presentation and the way you introduce yourself are the most critical factors. However, confidence can significantly impact the overall outcome of your performance. The way you dress and how you feel about it affects your true self, so choose an outfit that makes you feel confident.

In conclusion, the biggest takeaway is that confidence and staying true to your personal style is the best outfit you can wear. Everything else is secondary. So, focus on feeling confident, and the rest will fall into place.

In this post, I will be sharing men’s presentation outfit ideas as well some important tips on how your clothing can you feel more comfortable and confident during your presentation. You’ll also find out what to avoid so you look your best.

Men’s Presentation Outfit Ideas

Tops, Shirts and Sweaters

The basics:

When going for a business casual look, you have a couple great choices.

A polo shirt is a casual top for a presentation and it will be comfortable. I would recommend choosing a simple color like white or navy blue depending on the pants you plan on wearing. This will be a simple shirt but often simple looks the best.

A white dress shirt with a distinct pattern is a great choice when dressing business casual. If you get a nice fitting dress shirt it will make you look very sharp. Many people will stick to wearing polo shirts when presenting so wearing a dress shirt will make it look as if you put more effort into your outfit.

Elevate your look:

If you want to elevate your look you can add a sports jacket or blazer to your outfit. Wearing a blazer will make you look more formal and put together. If that’s the look you are going for, it’s the perfect item to add to your outfit. Keep it mind you may get hot during your presentation wearing a sports coat, so choose your fabric wisely.

Chinos are the perfect presentation pants. I recommend either navy blue or khaki as they will go with almost any shirt color you choose. A white dress shirt and navy blue chinos will make a great business casual outfit.

If you prefer to wear dress pants those work well too. Dress pants will give a more formal look, however do be careful not to look overdressed if you’re in a college or casual workplace setting.

If you don’t have any of the pants I mentioned, black jeans will do in a pinch. If that’s all you got, just make it work! It’s not always about having the nicest clothes but it’s how you wear them.

Black dress shoes are perfect for presentations. If you want to dress business casual, classic black dress shoes are a wardrobe staple and must have. They always look good and are so versatile that you can wear them anywhere.

Brown dress shoes are also a great shoe to wear for presentations. I would recommend wearing these with the blue chinos as blue and brown go really well together when it comes to clothing.

If you like loafers they will give you a more stylish look. Many people will present in classic dress shoes. However, if you want to look good as well as stand out, a nice pair of loafers with the right pants will look great.

Clothing Accessories

A watch it an important accessory to wear with your presentation outfit. A smart watch or a watch with a leather strap will look great for the business casual look and it will add to your outfit. A gold or silver watch it’s perfectly fine, however don’t wear something that’s overly flashy.

Wearing a belt is a must. Make sure you the belt is the same colour as your shoes. It will make your look a lot sharper than having a different shoe colour than your belt.

What to Avoid Wearing For Presentations

Flashy Colours

When presenting it’s a good idea to avoid wearing flashy colours. Wearing bright pink, green, yellow or tie-dye should absolutely be avoided, as you don’t want to distract from your message and presentation.

Save the fun and more outlandish outfits for other occasions and look professional for presentations.

Additionally, if you tend to sweat, avoid grey and other colours that will make it obvious that you are sweating.

Baggy Clothing

Avoid baggy clothing! Clothing should fit well and never be too tight or too baggy.

Ripped Clothing

Ripped clothing looks great when you’re going to a party, but not so much for a presentation. Remember, you want to dress business casual which requires a clean and sharp outfit.

Dirty Clothes

Always avoid wearing dirty clothes. If your shirt is dirty it will be very noticeable when presenting so do your best to keep your nicer clothing clean and ready to wear in your closet.

If you happen to get a small stain on your shirt, using a stain removal stick like Tide to Go is a good temporary solution.

Flashy Jewelry

When presenting there’s nothing wrong with some wearing some nice accessories. However, you’ll want to avoid wearing super flashy jewelry. A shiny gold watch, or huge chain or diamond necklace could be distracting when you present. Wearing some simple jewelry is best for presentations.

Can I Wear Sneakers for a Presentation?

No, sneakers are way too casual for presentations. Instead, you can wear dress shoes or loafers, which are the appropriate style and look you want.

Do I Need to Wear a Tie For a Presentation?

If you’re making a presentation at work where suits are often worn, like in finance, then you may want to wear a tie. However, the current style is wearing a suit and dress shirt and leaving the top button open, without a tie.

Always make sure you know what your audience and peers expect. These days, in most settings you probably can skip a tie.

Should I Wear a Shirt Tucked or Untucked for a Presentation?

When it comes to dressing for a presentation, you can decide on tucking your shirt in based on what you are wearing and your personal style.

If you are wearing a dress shirt, tucking it in will look more professional. If you are wearing a collared t-shirt you can wear it untucked.

At the end of the day, wear your shirt the way you think you look your best and feel comfortable.

Being comfortable in the clothes that you are wearing is really important. If you show up to the presentation and your shirt collar is irritating you, it will bother you while presenting.

It’s important to try on your outfit in advance and make sure that you are comfortable.

When choosing shoes, make sure they are comfortable and not too tight. Often times, dress shoes or loafers can give you blisters, especially if it’s the first time that you are wearing them.

If you have to wear the shoes all day, you won’t regret investing in good quality shoes that are comfortable.

When shopping for clothes be patient and choose clothes that fit your body well. If you choose something just because it’s business casual or it looks good on the manaquin, it doesn’t mean that it will look good on you.

The fit of your clothing will go hand and hand with how confident you feel in your outfit.

Wearing cologne is a small detail that can greatly improve your appearance. Smelling good will enhance your look and having a nice scent will make it seem as if you put more thought into your outfit.

Make sure to not over do it on the cologne. Wearing too much cologne can be a distraction from the presentation which is something you seriously want to avoid.

Wearing an outfit that fits you nicely, is comfortable and that you know makes you look good will make you instantly more confident.

When it comes to presenting, confidence is key and it all starts with the clothes you are wearing. It’s important to be confident during your presentation as it will make your presentation go a lot smoother.

Cannot decide what to wear for your debut in college? Or still finding your confused self buried under a pile of clothes every morning? Here are a few steps on how to dress for college, and outfit ideas to help make your mornings a little easier!

Amidst our heart and body fighting for that extra five minutes sleep every morning, our mind is totally gearing up to decide the day’s outfit. We have been getting dolled up, and dressing up our dolls since what, we were two – or maybe three(?), but still this question, “What should I wear?” remains constant. You know, girls have always been accused of two things – one, that we have a small appetite and two, that we always keep cribbing about not having enough clothes. I am definitely ready to take on anybody for first one, but I have to say for the second, I am guilty as charged.

When we go to college there is this major shift from uniforms to no-uniforms, and from two braids or pony tails to “inhe udne do”. And I think we all love this liberalization, this chance to finally be able to dress according to our choices, depending on our moods, events, and showcase the hidden stylist within us. Although on some days of my college I just wish I could go back to wearing uniforms, because then at least I wouldn’t have to go through the “I don’t have any clothes” process, and my room would look a little better every morning. But hey, don’t you think college is all about being confused, and exploring numerous things in that confusion?

How to Build your College Wardrobe?

Pleated skirt is all over the runways this season. It is fancy yet casual, and surely a multi-purpose skirt that goes with blazers, casual tees, and can even be worn to parties. Pair a pleated skirt with any printed or bright colored top or tee from your wardrobe. You can also pair a dark colored skirt with a simple off-the-shoulder top or tee.

Go for midis, as they are airy, comfortable yet stylish. With such comfort they are perfect for a hectic day at college. You can pair them with denim jacket, or even a casual button-up shirt. As we know espadrilles have come back this season, and I think espadrilles be it sandals or loafers would go best with this outfit, striking an old-school look. I have skipped on accessories because I wanted to keep the look simple, but if you wanna add accessories you can surely experiment and explore your choices.

Hair-do: Half bun, keep them flowing.

4. Skinny ripped jeans+ basic V neck top+ sneakers

Skinny jeans looks super fashionable, and can be paired with any top or t-shirt. Pair a skinny ripped jeans with any basic top in your wardrobe, and finish off the outfit with bright colored sneakers and a cute backpack. This is a simple outfit but looks chic. If you are pressed for time and still want to look stylish, then this is the outfit for you. It is a street style look which can be produced in no time.

Hair do: Tie a bun or go for a messy side fishtail braid.

5. Off-shoulder top+ skinny jeans+ kitten heels

On days when you are wanting to show your style statement and dress a little extra, pull out a fancy off-shoulder top maybe with some flares or bell sleeves and pair it with a skinny jeans. Semi-Formal Outfit Ideas for Presentation

I know presentations in college can get boring, and some colleges have a mandatory formal dress code. But who said that formals can be only dull and monotonous. I say experiment even with your formals, try different combinations, and colors.

1. Wide legged trousers+ poplin shirt

Go with a wide leg trouser, and a shirt. I chose a red colored trouser for this outfit because I wanted to go with something exciting, and save my outfit from belonging to the monotonous color card. The poplin white shirt that I paired with this trouser makes this outfit groovy. Lastly I chose to keep my earrings minimal, because otherwise the outfit would look a little flashy. (Cause ya, you want the screen to light, not you). Finish your look with heels or if you want to go with flats, then monk shoes would be perfect.

2. Cotton trousers+ sleeveless turtle neck top

If you wanna go different, and not wear regular shirt and trousers then this is the right outfit for you. Pair cotton trousers with a sleeveless turtleneck top, and add a thin belt. Or pair cigarette pants with a cute sleeveless button-up shirt. I suggest keep the colors neutral because we want the outfit to look more formal, and less fancy. Wear a watch, and a pair of neutral colored heels. This is my go-to formal outfit as it is rather simple and chic, and most importantly it keeps me cool, and is ideal for a sunny day.

How to Dress for College Parties: Outfit Ideas

Parties are undoubtedly the best part of college life. One thing about college parties is that they are super lit, and rocking. But party is not the only thing that should be rocking. Obviously your outfit should be, too! And when we talk about how to dress for college, I don’t think that only your routine college days are important, even your special days like parties are, and they too require a special outfit.

1. Thigh high slit skirt+ crop top

A thigh high slit skirt is trendy as well as perfect for a party. Pair it with a crop top, and put on your favorite pair of pumps. I have chosen a printed skirt, and a plain crop but you can even do it vice-a-versa. There’s nothing more bold and fashionable than print over print, and if you can carry it then there is nothing more party-like wild and stylish, than a printed crop top over a printed thigh high skirt. Put on lots of highlighter, and a bright colored lipstick to rock your outfit.

Hair-do: Curl your hair and keep them flowing.

2. A-line side slit midi skirt+ satin shirt

Pair an A-line mid length side slit skirt with a satin shirt for a sophisticated yet classy outfit. And complete the look with a choker, and a big-sized finger ring. I suggest, put on lots of highlighter but keep your lips nude because a rather bold lip color would out-do the elegance of the outfit.

This outfit is perfect for your on-campus parties, as it is decent yet chic. But if you are looking for an unofficial college party outfit, you can simply replace the silk shirt with a bandeau top. This is my favorite outfit among all other outfits on our this list of how to dress for college, as it is party-like, chic and classy. This particular styling makes one look elegant plus there can be a numerous variations of this outfit.

Hair do: Straighten them, or go for the wet hair look.

How to Dress For College Formal Events

Some of the colleges ask you to be super formal in presenting your personality at any of their events, these are the Ivy League schools and colleges. But that does not stop only there. Apart from the Ivy League schools and colleges, an average college asks you to stay and wear something formal on their events. This means, that you cannot always stay in your flip flops along with those hooded sweatshirts and the mesh shorts . You would need to polish your look at some certain events which would ask you to stay formal yourself. This means you would wear those traditional clothes instead of any other ones. You need to look good enough and fit in the environment without embarrassing yourself, which means you would need to know what is the nature of that event.

Homecoming Events 

This is one of the events where you experience your first event. And the first semester of your college. These colleges and universities have some events like dance or dinner in it which somehow helps you tell your surrounding people that what kind of a person you are by displaying your personality through your clothing. However, that certainly does not mean you put on a job interview look for the evening. You should have something cleaner and more composed, giving off those festive vibes. There would be alumni in it which would be having fun and recalling their good old days spent in the institution. So, you better go for a shirt with a solid color along with either a striped tie or a bowtie, do not forget to include your institutions’ logo color in it. 

You would look perfectly fine, and it would show that you understood the level of formality asked in it. You would also be able to enjoy the event by having fun. This varies from department to department, professional clubs, and student groups that whether they come up with a formal or a semi-formal event. By the word formal, you would be considering going for a tuxedo along with a bowtie. By semi-formal, you would be considering to go for a suit , which is completely right. But sometimes, all you would need would be a simple shirt with a tie , but those would not be semi-formal events just so you know. So get ahead of the game and know what kind of event you are attending so that you could have something to wear on it in time. You can even ask someone or go through the data to the previous related events on Facebook or Instagram. Usually, the most common events are semi-formal which gives you space to wear your own choice. Go for the ties in solid colors because the striped ties are considered to be the signifiers of the membership in a university, some club, or a military regiment.

This depends on the subject that requires you to wear a suit for your class presentation on it. These are usually common in business degrees having marketing and finance in it.

You come off to be authoritative by nature because it shows that you care about it, as dressing is not only limited to show it off to the audience. Let's start with a more fun situation that you may encounter in your first semester of college. Many universities hold special evening events during Homecoming, like a dinner or dance, and there's a good chance you're going to have to dress up to attend. But, dressing for homecoming shouldn't be like dressing for a job interview. Think composed and clean but also festive. This is an event that will likely be full of proud alumni who are there to have fun and reminisce on the good ol' days. A solid colored dress shirt paired with a striped tie or bow tie incorporating your school's colors is a popular option. It's a polished look that also shows you understand the event and are ready to have fun. A nice pair of chinos will suffice for this event as well. Don't wear sneakers. Professional Outcomes: 54% of students graduating in 2022 had already accepted full-time jobs before exiting; 27% were heading to graduate/professional school. Members of that class reported an average starting salary of $62,024 (with a slightly higher median). Including all graduating years, the companies employing the largest number of alumni are Cisco, Red Hat, SAS, IBM, Lenovo, Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, Google, Deloitte, Facebook, and Salesforce. IU’s computer science degree program is the school’s third most frequently conferred degree at 8%.

Professional Outcomes: Class of 2022 grads reached their next employment or graduate school destination at a 94% rate within six months of receiving their degrees. The median starting salary for A&S grads was $41,000. In the Kelley School of Business, 97% were placed successfully within six months, and the median starting salary was $67,000. Among the most frequently attended graduate schools by recent grads are Indiana Bloomington (including its own law and medical schools), Purdue, Loyola Chicago, Northwestern, and Columbia.

Major employers of Marist alums include IBM, which presently employs close to 700 individuals, as well as JP Morgan Chase, EY, Macy’s, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Deloitte, and NBC Universal Media. The top five sectors employing 2022 grads are (in order) finance, technology, marketing, health, and engineering. Roughly one-third of 2022 Florida State grads elected to immediately pursue admission into an advanced degree program; 75% of those who apply receive at least one acceptance. Business is the most commonly conferred degree accounting for 18% of all diplomas earned in 2022. The next most popular areas are biology (14%), engineering (10%), the social sciences (8%), and family & consumer sciences (6%).

Professional Outcomes:  Among 2022 graduates, 87% quickly secured their next job or grad school opportunity. For the 68% who landed their first job, the average salary was $57,489. Overall, 88% of those surveyed stated that this job was related to their career plans. Common employers include Charles Schwab, Deloitte, Fidelity Investments, Lockheed Martin, and the US Air Force. The most popular grad schools include CU Boulder, the University of Michigan, UIUC, and Columbia University.

Texas Christian University

• Forth Worth, TX

Academic Highlights: TCU offers 116 undergraduate majors. The most popular are housed in the Neely School of Business, including the highly-rated BBA in Entrepreneurship. 27% of all degrees conferred in 2022 fell under the business umbrella. The engineering program is also well-regarded. Other commonly conferred degrees include communications/journalism (15%), health professions (11%), and the social sciences (9%). 39% of its class sections have 20 or fewer students, and only 5% of courses seat more than 50.

Professional Outcomes: Upon graduating, 48% of recent diploma-earners were employed and 18% had their graduate school placement lined up. American Airlines, Deloitte, IBM, Lockheed Martin, and Medical City Hospitals employ the greatest number of recent alumni. Other companies with a large TCU presence include Microsoft, CBRE, Goldman Sachs, and AT&T. The most recent median starting salary was $58,900. For those who enrolled in an advanced degree program, the most commonly pursued areas of study were medicine/health (27%), business (21%), and psychology (13%).

Baylor University

Academic Highlights: Class sizes at Baylor generally range from small to medium, with 48% of sections containing fewer than 20 students and 76% enrolling fewer than 29. Far more Bears major in business/marketing (25%) than the second-place finisher, health professions (19%). Other popular academic pursuits are biology (12%) and communication/journalism (7%), both of which are very strong. The Hankamer School of Business is highly respected across the country.

Professional Outcomes: At the 180-day post-graduation point, those who earned their diplomas from Baylor had entered the world of full-time employment at a 50% clip, and 28% had entered a graduate or professional degree program. Large numbers of recent grads were scooped up by many of the most desirable employers in the country including Dell (19), EY (16), and Oracle (16). The average starting salary was $59k. Among recent grads, the most commonly attended graduate school was Baylor itself (125), followed by Texas A&M (12).

Iowa State University

Academic Highlights:  With more than 100 majors available across six undergraduate colleges, Iowa State has no shortage of academic pathways to explore. The student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1, yet, courses are a mix of large and small. 31% of sections enroll fewer than 20 students and 22% enroll more than 50. In terms of sheer popularity, engineering wins the day accounting for 23% of degrees earned in 2022. Business (18%), agricultural fields (10%), biology (5%), and education (5%) also see high volume.

Professional Outcomes: Graduates of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are employed in fairly large numbers by the likes of John Deere, Principal Financial Group, and Amazon. Overall, the most alumni work for Wells Fargo, Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, Collins Aerospace, Cargill, and Microsoft. Most remain in Iowa after graduation but many also move to Minnesota, Chicago, California, or Texas. The average starting salary for an engineering grad was $74,716 in 2023.

University of South Carolina

• Columbia, SC

Academic Highlights: UofSC is a massive enterprise, with 16 colleges/schools within the larger university. Even so, 70% of all sections contain 29 or fewer students. 32% of students take the opportunity to earn a degree in the business/marketing realm from the superb Darla Moore School of Business. The international business program is also top-ranked. Other popular disciplines include health services (11%), biology (10%), engineering (6%), and communication and journalism (6%).  The South Carolina Honors College is extremely hard to get into and is one of the finest in the entire country.

Professional Outcomes: 79% of recent grads landed at their next destination within six months with an average starting salary of over $55,000. Within the School of Business, 87% of 2023 grads were employed within three months and the average starting salary was $69k. Top employers of recent classes included KPMG, IBM, Aramark, Bank of America, Vanguard, PwC, and Marriot. The majority of those continuing their studies in a graduate/professional degree program did so at the University of South Carolina; other popular landing spots are Duke and Wake Forest.

College hoop stars showcase their fashion prowess at the WNBA draft

The WNBA wears Prada.

The stars of the game wore top fashion labels Monday night that turned the draft into a mini-Oscars where style was front and center along with the picks.

Caitlin Clark. Cameron Brink. Kamilla Cardoso. Angel Reese.

They all stepped onto the stage and met the challenge essentially every woman can identify with: Overcoming the trepidation of finding just the right outfit for that special occasion.

“There’s never been a bigger spotlight on women’s basketball, thanks in large part to players like Caitlin Clark and coaches like Dawn Staley,” Rose Minutaglio, ELLE senior editor of features and special projects, wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

Usually, when a woman finds what she wants, it’s not a question of whether alterations are needed, but how much. The taller the woman, the bigger the challenge can be.

These tall ladies appeared to pass the test.

It was the perfect time for a fashionable splash just like NFL and NBA players do on their draft nights. Last year, Taylor Hendricks of UCF wore a pink suit with the jacket lined with photos representing his journey to the NBA and the people who meant the most to him.

“With more eyes on the league, players recognize the opportunity to showcase their personalities through their style,” Minutaglio said. “Because of glaring pay discrepancies, fashion partnerships and brand sponsorships will continue to play a big role for female athletes.”

Staley and her South Carolina Gamecocks’ victory over Clark and Iowa in the women’s national championship game outdrew the men in television ratings, and this is shaping up to be the WNBA’s most-watched draft.

The 6-foot Clark was joined in New York by the 6-7 Cardoso, 6-4 Brink and 6-3 Reese, among others. They’ve been busy since the NCAA Tournament, too, especially Clark, who made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

Clark went with a white jacket and skirt with a sparkly cut-off top, sunglasses and black heels. She credited having people help her prepare keeping it less stressful.

“The first time Prada has ever dressed a male or female for WNBA or NBA draft so pretty cool,” Clark said during the WNBA’s livestream from its orange carpet.

Brink and Reese wore outfits that wouldn’t be out of place during Fashion Week or a red carpet in Hollywood. Brink wore a diagonal black and white dress showing off both shoulders with a slit exposing her right leg.

Reese shimmered in a hooded, backless gray dress with a plunging neckline after a late wardrobe change with help from designers Bronx and Banco, Simon Miller and Christian Louboutin.

“I got this two days ago,” Reese said. “My original dress didn’t fit.”

Rickea Jackson of Tennessee made a wardrobe change between the orange carpet and the draft itself before being selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks.

“They’re just going to be falling in love with my personality,” Jackson said of Sparks’ fans.

Alissa Pili, the eighth pick by Minnesota, worked with a designer to pay tribute to her Alaska Native heritage in the black and gold pattern of her dress.

Most of these glam looks didn’t come off the rack.

Being tall is an advantage and not a hindrance for WNBA players. Models who grace the runways during fashion week and the covers of fashion magazines often stand at least 6 feet and taller.

The league’s own growing popularity in recent years also has helped.

“Players are also starting to work directly with designers, who help outfit them, and stylists, who focus on game-day drip,” Minutaglio wrote.

This was only the second WNBA draft with fans in attendance, and 1,000 tickets sold out in February for the event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Fans got to attend the 2016 draft at the Mohegan Sun when former UConn All-American Breanna Stewart was the top pick.

Shakira Austin, the third overall pick in 2022 by the Washington Mystics, understands the angst Clark and others faced. While the 6-5 center was playing in college at Mississippi, Austin was forced to be creative as she struggled to find pants that fit or any clothing that captured her style.

So she got busy with a sewing machine and became her own designer. Now that Austin is in the pros, she’s a fashionista tapping into her creativity, doing more than just pants, leggings and shirts. Austin told the AP earlier this year that it’s a great time to dive into both modeling and clothing design.

On her way to becoming the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer, Clark was surprised by designer Kristin Juszczyk, whose husband, Kyle, plays for NFC champion San Francisco in the NFL. She created a puffer vest with Clark’s No. 22 in Iowa black and gold, putting the player in select company with the likes of pop superstar Taylor Swift.

Minutaglio said several brands work with female athletes, with Glossier and SKIMS teaming up with the WNBA specifically. She noted sports brands like Puma, Adidas and Nike all work with women in basketball.

“What’s interesting is we’re seeing players and teams branch out into high-fashion, wearing Dior and Louis Vuitton and Gucci,” Minutaglio said.

Staley herself was decked out on the sideline of the title game in Louis Vuitton, from her silver jacket down to her sneakers, grabbing attention for her look far beyond the sports pages. Minutaglio noted New York-based women’s wear brand M.M. LaFleur has a multiyear deal with the New York Liberty.

“I wrote a story for ELLE in 2022 predicting the rise of WNBA game-day fashion, and since then, the looks just keep getting better and better,” Minutaglio wrote. “The fashion set is excited to see where it goes from here.”

Cries of Sexism Greet a Nike Olympic Reveal

The sporting giant offered a sneak peek at its track and field outfits for Team U.S.A., and an unexpected backlash ensued.

Ever since the Norwegian women’s beach handball team turned the fact that they were required to wear teeny-tiny bikini bottoms for competition into a cause célèbre, a quiet revolution has been brewing throughout women’s sports. It’s one that questions received conventions about what female athletes do — or don’t — have to wear to perform at their very best.

It has touched women’s soccer (why white shorts?), gymnastics (why not a unitard rather than a leotard?), field hockey (why a low-cut tank top?) and many more, including running.

So it probably should not have come as a shock to Nike that when it offered a sneak peek of the Team U.S.A. track and field unies during a Nike Air event in Paris celebrating its Air technology on Thursday (which also included looks for other Olympic athletes, like Kenya’s track and field team, France’s basketball team and Korea’s break dancing delegation), they were met with some less-than-enthusiastic reactions.

See, the two uniforms Nike chose to single out on the mannequins included a men’s compression tank top and mid-thigh-length compression shorts and a woman’s bodysuit, cut notably high on the hip. It looked sort of like a sporty version of a 1980s workout leotard. As it was displayed, the bodysuit seemed as if it would demand some complicated intimate grooming.

Citius Mag , which focuses on running news, posted a photo of the uniforms on Instagram, and many of its followers were not amused.

“What man designed the woman’s cut?” wrote one.

“I hope U.S.A.T.F. is paying for the bikini waxes,” wrote another. So went most of the more than 1,900 comments.

The running comedian Laura Green posted an Instagram reel in which she pretended to be trying on the look (“We’re feeling pretty, um, breezy,” she said) and checking out the rest of the athlete’s kit bag, which turned out to include hair spray, lip gloss and a “hysterectomy kit,” so the women would not have to worry about periods.

When asked, Nike did not address the brouhaha directly, but according to John Hoke, the chief innovation officer, the woman’s bodysuit and the man’s shorts and top are only two of the options Nike will have for its Olympic runners. There are “nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s and a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events,” Mr. Hoke said.

Women will be able to opt for compression shorts, a crop top or tank and a bodysuit with shorts rather than bikini bottoms. The full slate of looks was not on hand in Paris but more will be revealed next week at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit in New York. The Paris reveal was meant to be a teaser.

Mr. Hoke also pointed out that Nike consults with a large number of athletes at every stage of the uniform design. Its track and field roster includes Sha’Carri Richardson, who happened to be wearing the compression shorts during the Paris presentation, and Athing Mu. And there are certainly runners who like the high-cut brief. (The British Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith , another Nike athlete, told The New York Times last summer that while she opts to run in briefs, she also leans toward a leotard style, rather than a two-piece.)

What Nike missed, however, was that in choosing those two looks as the primary preview for Team U.S.A., rather than, say, the matching shorts and tanks that will be also available, it shored up a longstanding inequity in sports — one that puts the body of a female athlete on display in a way it does not for the male athlete.

“Why are we presenting this sexualized outfit as the standard of excellence?” said Lauren Fleshman, a U.S. national champion distance runner and the author of “Good for a Girl.” “In part because we think that’s what nets us the most financial gain from sponsors or NIL opportunities, most of which are handed out by powerful men or people looking at it through a male gaze. But women are breaking records with ratings in sports where you don’t have to wear essentially a bathing suit to perform.”

The problem such imagery creates is twofold. When Nike chose to reveal the high-cut bodysuit as the first Olympics outfit, purposefully or not, the implication for anyone watching is that “this is what excellence looks like,” Ms. Fleshman said.

That perception filters down to young athletes and becomes the model girls think they have to adopt, often at a developmental stage when their relationships with their bodies are particularly fraught.

And more broadly, given the current political debate around adjudicating women’s bodies, it reinforces the idea that they are public property.

Still, Ms. Fleshman said, “I’m glad Nike put this image out as the crown jewel of Olympic Team design,” because it may act as the catalyst for another conversation that has been long overdue.

“If you showed this outfit to someone from the W.N.B.A. or women’s soccer, they would laugh in your face,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to normalize it for track and field anymore. Time’s up on that.”
