Prince movie review: sivakarthikeyan's charm and his chemistry with sathyaraj elevate this quirky but silly comedy to a fun watch..

Sivakarthikeyan ’s Prince could be described as an experimental comedy film. I use the word experimental because it isn’t wholesomely entertaining as some of his other films but at the same time it works as a quirky attempt at bringing forth a different style of humour. You could even call it silly humour, which worked beautifully in Anudeep’s last film, Jathi Ratnalu. In Prince, too, it works to a large extent and that’s what makes the comedy refreshing, if not wildly entertaining. The film works when you don’t take it seriously. The plot is simple. It’s about a Tamil boy (Sivakarthikeyan plays Anbu) from a fictional village near Pondicherry falling in love with a British girl (Maria plays Jessica). Sathyaraj plays Anbu’s father (Ulaganathan) and he’s a staunch anti-casteist, who wants his son to marry outside their caste. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Instead of extending his support for their love, Ulaganathan opposes the idea because his father was killed by the British during the independence struggle. Therefore, he doesn’t want someone from that country in his family.

The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you loved what he did with Jathi Ratnalu, Prince won’t disappoint you. Even though the film is not consistently as funny as Jathi Ratnalu, the jokes do work wherever they’re used.

Nobody else but Sivakarthikeyan could’ve made Prince work to this extent. He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Sathyaraj is equally good as the father and complements Sivakarthikeyan well in so many scenes. The chemistry between them really comes alive on the screen and it’s a treat to watch.

Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The comedy stretches work and generate ample laughs to keep you invested. The dull stretches do serve as a roadblock in an otherwise breezy story that touches upon the theme of fake nationalism.

Prince Review: Anudeep & Sivakarthikeyan Create A Cute Little Town On Screen

The fictional town that Anudeep has created in his universe is funny and light-hearted. The people are simple and naive, and nobody really takes anything seriously. In short, Anudeep gives us exactly what we were expecting him to.

Prince follows the footsteps of Sivakarthikeyan's successful projects, where the focus is not on what is happening, but on how people react to the situations they are in. Anudeep, coincidentally, is also someone who believes in character-driven comedy adventures. This is a combination that was meant to happen, and I'm happy it did.

There was a shot shown in the trailer where a journalist asks a villager, "Is this the first time, something like this is happening here, or have similar things happened before?" The villager responds "This sort of things have happened many times before, but this is the first time."

Here is a sample from the film that was not part of the trailer. In a scene where Anbu, Sivakarthikeyan's character, tries to connect emotionally with his father, he says this. "Dad, do you remember? When I was young and I won a prize in a competition, people asked me who is your father. And I told them your name."

I find these very funny, and I generally find Anudeep's sense of humour quite hilarious, especially because these jokes spring up surprisingly. He doesn't throw them around all the time. You mostly won't see them coming. If you like this kind of humor, Prince will definitely make your day.

Story & Performances

Prince follows the love story of a teacher who falls in love with his colleague who is a Britisher. The film is set in a fictional town in the Cuddalore district. The love life of this couple becomes a matter of discussion and it leads to an interesting plot. The film has a breezy pace and a celebratory vibe. It manages to convey some meaning and leaves an impact without trying hard to do that.

To complicate things for the couple, their fathers each have painful memories that developed a hatred inside them against each other's nations. And Premgi Amaren's character encourages and exploits this hatred for his personal gains.

Although the plot sounds quite serious, the film is intentionally so silly that you will find yourself lost in laughter.

Sivakarthikeyan is in his element and he pulls the role off effortlessly. Maria, Sathrayaj, and Premgi Amaren perform their roles sufficiently well. Since the genre demands a slapstick performance from the cast members, it's hard to judge their performances in detail.

Thaman's music although not very memorable, manages to spike up the energy in the theatres.

Strengths & Weaknesses

The film's primary strength is Anudeep's sense of humour. While it may not impress everyone, for those who find him funny, this film has a lot to offer, especially in the second half of the film.

Many movies start off great, but get lost in their way, and have an average ending. However, situational comedies peak at climax, and leave the audience extremely satisfied. Prince belongs comfortably in the category.

While the silliness brings laughter, there are moments where the film tries to induce some drama, and those moments become dull. Its as if the script is wondering whether to make a joke out of this dramatic situation or let it pass. These moments are a weak link the film.

If you like silly humour this will be the best comedy you will watch this year. If you liked Jathi Rathnalu you should not miss out on this gem.

Prince Movie Review (2022)

Anudeep kv's 'prince', with sivakarthikeyan and maria ryaboshapka, applies the 'jathi ratnalu' formula to a love story and falls flat.

Anudeep KV's USP is silliness. In Jathi Ratnalu , he roped in three actors: Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna. And he used these actors as punching bags for his brand of brilliantly nonsensical one-liners. I took some time to warm up to the film, but once I got on its wavelength, it became a blast. Anudeep treats silly situations in a silly way. He also treats serious situations in a silly way. Even when we think we are in for major melodrama, he keeps undercutting the mood with humour. He goes for the same approach in Prince , but this time, it doesn't work. Why? The first reason may be Sivakarthikeyan. This is right up the actor's zone and he is excellent, but he is also too big a star. This film may have worked for him before Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga , but today, after his rapid ascent to the top, we expect something a little… substantial, something big-screen worthy.

That, sadly, happens only during the songs by Thaman, which are grandly staged. Otherwise, the film is an oddly small, TV-level affair. (Again, with a smaller actor at the centre, it might not have seemed so small.) And we come to the second reason Prince doesn't work. In Jathi Ratnalu , Anudeep's anything-goes sensibility was a perfect fit for an anything-goes story. Here, the story is actually about something – or many things. It's about the irrelevance of caste and borders between countries. It's about the importance of humanity, which is possibly why the Sivakarthikeyan character is named Anbu. It's about how the British still own Indian soil – or land. And it's about Anbu falling for a Brit named Jessica, and played by Maria Ryaboshapka. This romance is opposed by Anbu's father (Sathyaraj) because of, well, what the Brits did on Indian soil.

What surprised me – and not in a good way – was the earnestness with which Anudeep approaches these issues and messages. In a film with this tonality, who wants to hear (from Jessica) that the British left behind a legacy of good things, too? Who wants a borderline-serious subplot with Premgi Amaren as a shady real-estate dealer? Why inflate the self-importance of a meant-to-be-silly film with key events taking place on January 26 and August 15? Why get all melodramatic with the Sathyaraj character in the second half? Yes, a lot of this is intercut with silly lines – in the spirit of the overall film – but this technique doesn't always work. 

The stretch with guest star Soori is a bomb. A bit woven around Charlie Chaplin is a bomb. A potential fight scene in a sports bar is a bomb. The flashback with Jessica's grandmother is a serious bomb. The strange characterisation of her father is a bomb. Jessica's "boy bestie" gag is a bomb. At one point, she asks Anbu why he loves her. Good question. The script is too lazy to think up an answer.

Prince is a chain link of missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Even the slapstick fight is not as slapsticky as it should be. I loved the sudden appearance of a cactus plant, but it doesn't do anything as crazy as it sounds. What's not bad? There's a not-bad sequence with Anandraj as a cop. There's a Monty Python-esque stretch (or Goundamani-Senthil-esque strech) about a vegetable. And like in Jathi Ratnalu , the hero gets to make a big, rousing speech that's filled with funny, nonsensical touches. This portion is the only one where the issues and the silliness come together organically, and the tricky mix is beautifully handled by the writing. And I loved the hero-entry scene. You think it's going to be one thing. It cleverly becomes something else – and you can't imagine anyone but Sivakarthikeyan pulling this off. But Prince is proof that likeability on screen is not enough to make a movie.

Talking about the film, a Twitter user wrote, "@Siva_Kartikeyan  sir hattrick hit #PrinceReview #prince laughter therapy, movie is like an  full package of love, comedy and very little emotion, @anudeepfilm follows a sundar c sir pattern."

A third user said that not everyone would like 'senseless comedy' but it definitely worked well for him. "#Prince is not everyone's cup of tea, but trust me to go with an open mind and rofl throughout the movie.. Senseless comedy worked out very very veryyyyy wellll!!! @Siva_Kartikeyan."

In the film, Sivakarthikeyan and Maria Ryaboshapka are colleagues in a school. Although Sivakarthikeyan's father (played by Sathyaraj), who is a social reformer, gives his nod, there are other obstacles to the love story. Anudeep KV has opted for a different kind of rom-com and narrated it in his style. Sivakarthikeyan shines in the character with his comedy timing and Sathyaraj too provides comic relief.

Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa's visuals and music director S Thaman's music look promising. The production design looks high in standard. While Praveen KL is the editor, Arun Viswa is the co-producer of the film.

Suniel Narang, along with Puskur Ram Mohan Rao and Suresh Babu, is producing the movie under the banners of Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP, Suresh Productions and Shanthi Talkies. Sonali Narang presents the movie.

Directed by Anudeep KV of 'Jathi Ratnalu' fame, the film hit screens worldwide on October 21 as the makers expect to cash in on the long weekend with Diwali on October 25.

Prince Movie Twitter Review: Sivakarthikeyan’s Mark Family Entertainer!

Starring Sivakarthikeyan , the movie ‘Prince’ was released simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil languages under the direction of talented director Anudeep KV. Maria Ryaboshapka is playing the female lead opposite Sivakarthikeyan. Presented by Narayan Das Narang, Sunil Narang, D. Suresh Babu, and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao jointly produced the film under the banners of Sri Venkateswara Cinemas LLP, Suresh Productions, and Shanti Talkies. The film is going to be released on October 21 as a gift for Diwali.

The audience who have already watched the film expressed their opinion through Twitter. The movie is entertaining throughout. It is said that Sivakarthikeyan’s mark as an entertainer movie. Production values, screenplay, and music are all good. Even if some one-liners in the movie are annoying and there are some unnecessary scenes… people who have seen the movie say that it was managed by Siva Karthikeyan.

They also say that this is a movie that the family audience will happily watch and enjoy this Diwali. Everyone is also saying that Siva Karthikeyan scored a hat trick with Prince after the films Doctor and College Don.

Prince review: Starring Sivakarthikeyan in the leading role, the romantic comedy has opened to overwhelming positive reviews from the moviegoers.

Starring Sivakarthikeyan in the leading role, the comedy film Prince has been released in theaters on Friday, October 21. The romantic drama follows the hilarious drama that unravels when Sivakarthikeyan's character of a teacher falls in love with a British teacher, essayed by Maria Riaboshapka, while working together at the same school.

Moviegoers rushed to the cinema theatres to catch Prince for the first show on its first day of theatrical release and have called the movie a perfect festive release, saying that it's a 'complete entertainer' and a 'one-man show' from the actor, whose last theatrical release was Don which hit theatres in May this year.

Giving it four stars out of five, one Twitter user wrote, "#Prince complete entertainer! Worth the money. Siva carries the whole movie! Brilliant making! Few minutes lagging in the second half. Yet completed package. Loved it." Another tweet read, "#Prince - Okayish and Good entertainer, Fun Guaranteed @Siva_Kartikeyan Anna Rocked again".

அனுதீப் இயக்கத்தில் சிவகார்த்திகேயன், மரியா, சத்யராஜ், பிரேம்ஜி நடிப்பில் பிரம்மாண்டமாக வெளியாகி உள்ள பிரின்ஸ் படத்தின் டுவிட்டர் விமர்சனம் வெளியாகி உள்ளது.

நடிகர் சிவகார்த்திகேயன் நடித்துள்ள பிரின்ஸ் திரைப்படம் தீபாவளி விருந்தாக இன்று திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. அனுதீப் இயக்கியுள்ள இப்படம் தமிழகத்தில் 600 திரைகளில் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. இதற்கு முன் சிவகார்த்திகேயன் நடிப்பில் வெளியான டாக்டர், டான் ஆகிய படங்கள் பிளாக்பஸ்டர் ஹிட்டானதால், இப்படத்தின் மூலம் அவர் ஹாட்ரிக் ஹிட் கொடுப்பாரா என்கிற எதிர்பார்ப்பு நிலவி வருகிறது.

இந்நிலையில், பிரின்ஸ் படத்தின் முதல் ஷோ இன்று அதிகாலை 5 மணிக்கு திரையிடப்பட்டது. இதற்காக அதிகாலையிலேயே தியேட்டர் முன் குவிந்த ரசிகர்கள் பட்டாசு வெடித்து, தார தப்பட்டை முழங்க ஆட்டம் போட்டு அமர்களப்படுத்தியதால் தியேட்டரே திருவிழாக்கோலம் பூண்டது. தற்போது பிரின்ஸ் படத்தின் டுவிட்டர் விமர்சனத்தை இந்த தொகுப்பில் பார்க்கலாம்.

நெட்டிசன் ஒருவர் பதிவிட்டுள்ளதாவது : பிரின்ஸ் படத்தின் முதல் பாதியை பார்க்கும்போது இது பண்டிகைக்கான படம் என்பது தெரிகிறது. குடும்பத்தோடு என்ஜாய் பண்ணி பார்க்கக்கூடிய படமாக உள்ளது. இது அனுதீப் சம்பவம். இரண்டாம் பாதியும் நன்றாக ஆரம்பித்துள்ளது என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

நெட்டிசன் போட்டுள்ள டுவிட்டில், பிரின்ஸ் முதல் பாதி திரைக்கதை சரியில்லை. நிறைய பேசுறாங்க ஆனா தீம் எதுவுமே இல்ல. இப்படத்தில் ஒரே ஒரு நல்ல விஷயம் தமனின் இசை. நான் ஜாதி ரத்னலு பார்த்திருக்கிறேன், அது நல்ல படம். ஆனால் பிரின்ஸ் தற்போது வரை என் எதிர்பார்ப்பை பூர்த்தி செய்யவில்லை என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

மற்றொரு பதிவில், பிரின்ஸ் படத்தின் முதல் பாதி ஃபன் ஆக இருக்கிறது. செண்டிமெண்ட் எதுவும் இல்லாமல் வருத்தப்படாத வாலிபர் சங்கம், ரஜினிமுருகன் படங்களில் பார்த்த சிவகார்த்திகேயனை பார்த்த ஒரு அனுபவம் கிடைக்கிறது. நிறைய இடத்துல அனுதீப்பின் மேனரிசத்தை பின்பற்றி இருக்கிறார் எஸ்.கே. என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

வேறொரு பதிவில், பிரின்ஸ் முதல் பாதி ஆவரேஜ் ஆக இருப்பதாகவும், கிரிஞ்ச் காமெடிகள் தான் இருக்கின்றன. அதில் சில ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகி உள்ளது, சில சொதப்பி உள்ளது. ஹீரோயின் மரியா ரொம்ப அழகா இருக்காங்க. சத்யராஜ் - சிவகார்த்திகேயன் காம்போ பார்க்க நன்றாக உள்ளது. பாடல்கள் ஆவரேஜ் தான் என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

பிரின்ஸ் முதல் பாதியை பொறுத்தவரை சிவகார்த்திகேயன் இண்ட்ரோ சூப்பர். பிம்பிலிக்கி பிலாப்பி மற்றும் ஜெசிகா பாடலில் அவரின் நடனம் அசத்தலாக உள்ளது. அனுதீப்பின் காமெடிகளில் நிறைய ஒன்லைன் காமெடிகள் ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகி உள்ளன. மரியாவின் தோற்றமும், அவரின் தமிழும் கியூட்டாக உள்ளது. என நெட்டிசன் ஒருவர் பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

மற்றொரு டுவிட்டர் பதிவில், பிரின்ஸ் முதல் பாதியில் சிவகார்த்திகேயனின் நடிப்பு சூப்பராக உள்ளது. தமனின் பாடல்களும், பின்னணி இசையும் வேறலெவல். நில பிரச்சனை பற்றிய படம். காமெடி சொதப்பல், காதல் பகுதி நன்றாக உள்ளது. டாக்டர், டான் படங்களை விட பிரின்ஸ் சுமார் தான். என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

மேற்கண்ட விமர்சனங்களை பார்க்கும்போது சிவகார்த்திகேயனின் பிரின்ஸ் படத்திற்கு இதுவரை கலவையான விமர்சனங்களே கிடைத்துள்ளது.

Prince Movie Review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy

Remember Mirchi Shiva's intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince , which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.

Director: Anudeep KV Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Riaboshapka, Sathyaraj

The humour won't come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeep's sophomore feature, Jathi Ratnalu . Be it the naivete in romance, the over-enthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyan's Anbu and Naveen Polisehetty's Jogipet Srikanth.

The plot of Prince is generic and predictable. A Tamil boy from a family of British haters falls in love with a... Britisher! And naturally, a series of crazy events prevent them from getting together. Another film with a story like this--and an uninspiring screenplay--might have sunk without trace, but he tremendous focus on nonsensical humour keeps Prince afloat.

The non-stop jokes, however, don't always land as intended. A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyaraj's wife anxiously asks him, "Ungalukku enna dhaan venum?" , he replies, "Nee inga irundhu ponum!" Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant. A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd.

For 'mokkai' comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) are cast humour. I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same can't be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non-Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesn't work.

As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance. The story is stagnant, and interesting angles--like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for her--are not explored well.

Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.

The title Prince doesn't bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyone's heart.

Prince is a romantic comedy film written and directed by Anudeep KV and produced by Suniel Narang, Suresh Babu and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao under the banner Suresh Productions. The film has Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Riaboshapka in the lead roles while Premgi Amaren, Sathish Krishnan, Prankster Rahul, Bhaarath and others play supporting roles. The film has music by Thaman and cinematography by Manoj Paramahansa.

Anbu (played by Sivakarthikeyan) is a social science teacher for a mid-grade school in Pondicherry and falls in love with Jessica (Maria Riaboshapka), an english teacher but the entire village is against their love because she's from a British origin. On the other side, Premgi plays the role of a cunning real estate person who grabs the land of people. What does this have to do with Anbu's romance and how Anbu deals with this problem and the conservative villagers form the rest of the plot.

The biggest positive of the film is Sivakarthikeyan's terrific expressions and his dance has also improved tremendously. His natural timing and chemistry with co-actors elevates the comedy scenes really well. Maria Ryaboshapka does what is expected of her. Among the supporting cast, Sathyaraj holds every scene he appears in with great control.

It is well known from his previous films that director Anudeep KV can handle humour extremely well and has a niche sense of comedy. His characters are usually innocent and realise the gravity of the situation very late. This innocence is where the comedy is derived from, and the same is the case with Prince as well.

Anudeep's sense of humour is niche. But a set of audience might not relate to this brand of comedy. At the same time, the nature of jokes and the plot are predictable. The initial school portion and the climax comedies work better. For instance, one of the killer lines is a voice over introducing Sathyaraj. The voice over goes, "Ivaru dhan enga appa, vayasula moothavaru" (meaning - He's my father, he's older than me).

However the issue with Prince is that the film leaves the story hanging just to get that extra laugh or clap. Till the interval, the film either moves at superfast pace or lags heavily. This means the scenes progress really fast and then stagnate for the next few minutes, but saved by consistent one-liner comedies that keep you entertained.

Overall, the writing of the film could have been better, which would have made the actors performances even better. The characters needed better sketching, but the clean nature of content will certainly entertain the family audiences and could also end up as a perfect Diwali treat.

Prince movie review: A partly effective spoof or a juvenile joke?

Prince is a mixed bag. For those who enjoy the grand comic set-up with momentary payoff, for those who have the patience to relate with such elaborate set up, it is an enjoyable entertainer.

After Sivakarthikeyan’s performance in Doctor , fans are left with high expectations. So when Prince was touted by the filmmakers to be a no-holds-barred comedy, many expected magic. This genre, in a way, is Sivakarthikeyan’s playing field. Yet, something went horribly wrong with Prince because the laughs were just not enough. From the very beginning, I had this sinking feeling with the dialogues as it did not land in many occasions. The film itself is a romantic comedy about a young Tamil man falling in love with a British girl settled in India. His father is a communist who pushes his children to marry out of caste, but he is also a nationalist who has a special place in his heart just to hate on the newer generations of Britishers for the sins of their ancestors.

So, Prince attempts to dig deeper by drawing in the ill feelings that certain sections of Indians have towards a country and the country persons that enslaved them. Can something as sensitive and serious as reparation for enslavement and racism really be used as fodder for something that is shallow from the very outset? It is only much later that the film sets itself up as a spoof. Especially the confrontation between Anbu and his father about his love for an English girl hints at the direction that the film wants to take. When Jessica says, “We gave you the railways, education…” and ends it by saying, “We even gave you freedom,” it strikes a nerve. This is the stand that white supremacists and people with saviour complex have repeatedly said when asked about reparation for the actions of their ancestors. A similar belief is also held by a huge section of upper caste community in India. They believe that they liberated the Dalit and Adivasi community from being ‘uncouth’, ‘uncivilized’, and ‘uncultured’. So they try to erase the oppression. However, the potential of this scene is visible only fleetingly. The comic expression on Sathyaraj ’s face is the only evidence of this potential.

This flaw in the screenplay sabotages the film to a great extent. So, the jokes that were promised in the film is juvenile and the payoff for any comedic set-up is too late too little. Take, for instance, the moment when the white girlfriend wants to buy bottle gourd! The fact that Anbu, the hero of this tale doesn’t know that Sorakkai is bottle gourd is the beginning of a joke that is too long, with a short payoff. We understand that the male ego doesn’t let this young man accept that he doesn’t know something that his crush does. He continues to pretend as if he knows what she is talking about. What really is hilarious is that Anbu finds a vegetable seller who wants to continue a facade with his own wife as well. He apparently impressed her with his English while courting her. The amount of world-building that goes into this sketch, even if half of it had been put into building Jessica as a person, or Anbu’s family, the film would have been better of for it.

Instead, it goes round and round in stressing how Anbu has betrayed his village by failing in love with an English girl. It is hilarious how Anbu’s father (Sathyaraj) was accepting of their relationship when he had believed that she was French. A quick note on Indian history and the European forces that occupied the nation at different times, La Compagnie française des Indes Orientales (French East India Company) set up an outpost in Pondicherry — now Puducherry. It is at this point that I began to see the film as a spoof. One that is a commentary on everything that the society today is most obsessed with. From K-drama, and reparation to hypernationalism, the film broaches it all, but ineffectively because of the earlier stated flaw in screenplay.

The huge holes in the screenplay is fixed momentarily with juvenile jokes. Prince would have done much better had it stuck by its conviction to make the dark jokes about society stick. Instead, the flimsy nature of commentary within the film makes the attempt nothing but laughable. Anbu and Jessica’s love story is not something to root for because all we see of their relationship is song and dance moments. It is so shallow that his own friends end up believing that he is dating her to settle down abroad. Another self-deprecating joke here, I am sure.

This is probably one of the few moments that I did truly enjoy because it feels as if the filmmaker made a self-aware comment regarding how much of Anbu’s intention we were allowed to see. These are thoughts, that one would really begin to form at the end of the film, because at the beginning, all of it seems disconnected and distorted. From a simple tale of a social science teacher falling in love with an English teacher, the film tries to build many layers. However, not one of them is portrayed with clarity. Even the dad jokes in the film come off as juvenile, but not juvenile enough to be enjoyed. It occupies this weird space in the joke world where the lines just travel above your head and flats flat on its face.

So Prince is a mixed bag. For those who enjoy the grand comic set-up with momentary payoff, for those who have the patience to relate with such elaborate set up, it is an enjoyable entertainer. Otherwise, it is a missed opportunity.

Prince, Monster, Sardar movie release and LIVE UPDATES: Karthi’s Sardar takes lead in the Diwali clash with Sivakarthikeyan and Mohanlal’s films

Two of tamil film industry’s most happening heroes - karthi and sivakarthikeyan - are clashing at the box office..

2022 Diwali does not have a release from top actors like Rajinikanth, Vijay, Ajith and Kamal Haasan, but it is still interesting as this time the box office clash is between two of the most-happening stars of the Tamil film industry – Karthi and Sivakarthikeyan.

On the one hand, you have Karthi, who is having a great year with back-to-back hits. In August, he rolled out Viruman, which despite mixed reviews, ended up as a commercial success retaining the core audience he has developed since his debut Paruthiveeran. He then had the biggest release in his career – Ponniyin Selvan 1, which is continuing its dream run at the box office. His character Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan ended up being a fan favourite. Even as the film is inching towards the Rs 475 crore mark, Karthi is coming out with Sardar, which will compete with his own film. That pretty much is enough to show what a year Karthi has been having. If Sardar, which is touted to be a ‘full meal’, strikes a chord with the audience, it would be a level-up for Karthi.

Sardar has Karthi in a dual role. Other than Karthi, it stars Rashi Khanna, Rajisha Vijayan, Chunky Panday, and Laila. Speaking to Indian Express , Sadar director PS Mithran said, “Come, have a full meal. We have everything: things you have seen before, things you haven’t seen before, old things in a different dimension. The film has got it all.” Looks like Karthi’s film will be a palatable affair that will entice all.

However, he is competing with the most-bankable star of Kollywood currently – Sivakarthikeyan , who has churned out one of the biggest hits of this year, Don. On top of that, Prince is directed by Anudeep of Jaathi Rathnalu fame, which gives the movie a chance in the Telugu market as well. The only downside Siva has, for now, is the underwhelming trailer of Prince, which has not worked in favor of the film. It has to be seen whether Anudeep’s brand of comedy, which worked well with the Telugu audience, would strike a chord in Tamil Nadu .

As far as the genre goes, Prince is starkly opposite to Sardar. While Karthi is coming out with a high-concept thriller, Sivakarthikeyan’s film is a simple comedy about a Tamil guy falling in love with a Brit woman, who happens to be his colleague in a school. It has Ukranian actress Maria playing the female lead.

All said and done, since it’s Diwali, there’s enough room for two films to co-exist as we are looking at a long holiday week. On top of that, healthy competition is also a good spectacle to watch like a movie.

The makers of Karthi starrer Sardar are using drones to promote the movie.

In Mollywood too, we have a Sardar. While Karthi seems to be just carrying the name, Mohanlal is embodying the meaning in his upcoming crime thriller, Monster. The film has brought together the blockbuster Pulimurugan combo – Mohanlal and director Vysakh. It also has Pulimurugan writer, Udaykrishnan, as part of the crew.
