Where Interdisciplinary Scholarship Produces Innovative Solutions

North side of Maxwell Hall exterior

At the heart of a Maxwell education is the fundamental belief that analyzing and developing measurable solutions to today’s complex challenges requires both disciplinary excellence and interdisciplinary cross-pollination of ideas.

Since its founding in 1946, our interdisciplinary social science Ph.D. program has been a leading center for innovative scholarship for students whose intellectual interests do not easily fit within the confines of a single social science discipline. With guidance from the social science Ph.D. chair, social science doctoral students develop their own programs of interdisciplinary study, incorporating social theory and research methods from Maxwell’s highly regarded social science and professional programs, including:

I am Maxwell.

I took urban anthropology and urban geography and urban sociology. I studied with some extraordinary people, and the degree that I got gave me such a broad, interesting education. Academy Scholars Program

This program is open to recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences.

The Academy Scholars Program of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their academic careers whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline with a command of the language and knowledge or expertise of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada. Their scholarship should span traditional disciplinary divisions and elucidate comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, past or present.

The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, and originality whose work shows promise as a foundation for careers in research universities or international institutions.

Academy Scholars are appointed for a two-year in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. They receive substantial financial and research assistance which permits them to undertake robust research projects and skills development in their chosen fields and areas. They meet at dinners, seminars, and informal get-togethers in order to pursue innovative interdisciplinary approaches to their work. They are mentored by the Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, a cohort of faculty members who act as a selection committee, participate in Harvard Academy events, and are committed to supporting the Academy Scholars as they work to achieve their potential.

The Harvard Academy is dedicated to building an inclusive community of scholars with an array of experiences, perspectives, and methods and welcomes a diverse pool of applicants.

Eligibility

These awards are open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degrees (within two years of the August 1, 2024, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences. Scholars nearing dissertation completion must be able to submit degree conferral documentation issued by their university registrar’s office by June 30, 2024, for an August 1, 2024, start date. Individuals who hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible to apply.

Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are named for two-year in-residence appointments with an annual stipend of $75,000, with the two years to be completed within a three-year window. Year 1 of the fellowship must be taken up no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. Delays or deferrals in the start of Year 1 are not permitted. Between Years 1 and 2, Academy Scholars may apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months), either to accept or to continue with a tenure-track teaching appointment but for no other reason. Academy Scholars may not accept other sources of funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.

How to Apply

All application materials must be submitted by the deadline of September 22, 2023 . We do not accept late applications.

The completed application will include:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV); including list of publications
  • Research proposal (2000 words maximum); including intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work
  • One scholarly writing sample (e.g., PhD dissertation chapter or single-authored peer-reviewed academic journal article; fifty pages maximum; in English)
  • A copy of your PhD program transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation (uploaded to the online application directly and confidentially by the recommender by September 22, 2023 )

All parts of the application, including the three letters of recommendation, are submitted online as pdf documents. Access the online application through the homepage of The Harvard Academy’s website by clicking on the APPLY ONLINE button.

All materials must be received by September 22, 2023 . The selection process begins immediately thereafter. Applicants whose materials are incomplete are at a disadvantage when considered by the Selection Committee. Announcement of the awards will be made in December 2023.

Questions should be emailed to: [email protected] .

You may include footnotes, endnotes, and/or bibliographies in your proposed research statement, but they are not required. If you do give references, they will not count towards the 2000-word maximum for the research statement.

Regarding transcripts from foreign universities: our reviewers read many applications from those at foreign universities and request as much transcript-like official documentation as the Registrar at your university can provide, for all graduate work—both for the Master's and PhD programs in which you have been or are currently enrolled. Your institution most likely gets these requests often and can provide the required paperwork to you upon request.

Frequently asked questions - applying for scholarships in the MyEd portal

Postgraduate Advisors and supporting Subject Area academics assess scholarship applications for their Subject Areas.

Scholarship applicants are then ranked and the top candidates are put forward to the next stage. Applicants not progressing to Stage Two will be notified by the end of April.

A   panel of assessors, comprising of the Director and Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes and at least one other senior School academic, assess all ranked scholarship applicants and rank them individually.

The ranks are then collated, and agreement on awards, reserves, and unsuccessful applicants are documented, with notifications emailed to applicants. Awardees are given 7 calendar days to respond to the scholarship offer. If no response is received by the given date, the offer will be rescinded and awarded to the next reserve candidate.

Assessors will use the  SGSSS Marking Framework for their ranking process in both stages.

The School selection panel will meet in the Spring, and results will be communicated to candidates by email shortly thereafter.

Note that we also hold a reserve list; in the event that a successful candidate later declines their award, for example because they obtain different funding. In this case, the award will be offered to the top candidate on the reserve list.

We aim to have contacted all SPS PhD Scholarship candidates to let them know the outcome of their application by the end of May.

Due to the volume of applications we receive and the lengthy assessment and ranking process, we are unable to answer individual responses until then.

This funding form is also used for several other awards, including:

  • Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships - SPS
  • 'CAHSS Research Award - SPS'
  • Alice Brown PhD Scholarship
  • Chrystal Macmillan PhD Scholarship
  • Macqueen Scholarship

Important - please ensure you check each scholarship deadline as they may differ.

You must enter a separate funding application for each award you wish to be considered for.

Year 1 full-time PhD students already at the School of Social and Political Science would, if successful, receive two years' funding to the end of the Prescribed Period of Study.

Part-time current PhD students would receive the pro-rata amount to the end of their Prescribed Period of Study.

Application is via your  MyEd account . The scholarship application section for current students is via the MyEd 'Student Self-Service' channel.

Details on how to find the scholarship section can be found on the Student Systems website.

Academic references

The default position is that we will look at the two references and your original research proposal provided on your EUCLID application for PhD study.

However, we would recommend that current Year 1 (full-time equivalent) students request assistance from their supervisors, who can comment on your progress to date, to provide updated references (maximum of 2 new references).

These can be emailed to the PGR Support team ( [email protected] ) by either yourself or your referee no later than the scholarship closing date. Guidance for referees can be found in our request for an academic or non-academic reference document .

Please ensure you name the scholarship you are applying for and provide your UUN in the email.

We also strongly advise that you update your  research proposal  (three to four pages). These must be emailed (from your University account) to the PGR Support team ( [email protected] ) no later than the scholarship closing date.

The scholarship application system will ask you to provide a personal statement (up to 500 words/3500 characters including spaces).

School of Social and Political Sciences PhD Scholarships

The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, is one of Scotland’s ancient universities and the 4 th  oldest university in the English-speaking world. Today, the University’s School of Social and Political Sciences (SPS) is a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre for world-leading social scientific scholarship, recognized by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework as having 90% or more of its research as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of its originality, significance and rigour. The School is a leading centre of interdisciplinary social science, bringing together research, innovation and student education to tackle the key social and political challenges of our time.

Further information can be found  here

The scholarships are open to anyone who, by September 2024, will hold an honours degree in the social sciences. A Master’s degree (or overseas equivalent) may be an advantage but not essential.

Scholarships for Social Science Majors

Social science majors can go on to pursue a variety of fulfilling careers - from social worker to sociologist. If you’re a social science major looking for ways to cover the cost of your education, you may want to consider applying for a scholarship. In many cases, scholarships for social science majors are differentiated by career path. For example, some scholarships are available only to students planning on pursuing a career in counseling and psychology, some are available only to students pursuing a career in human services, and others are available only to students planning on pursuing a career in journalism and communications. By contrast, other scholarships, such as those offered by the Social Science Research Council, are open to any student majoring in a social science. If you’d like to learn more about which scholarships for social science majors you may be eligible for, continue reading below.

Our goal is to ensure that PhD candidates have a stimulating and high-quality experience, leading to the timely completion of their research projects.

Project & activities

During your PhD appointment, which typically lasts three to four years, your primary focus will be conducting research for your doctoral dissertation. However, we also encourage you to engage in other activities such as taking courses offered by the PhD Training Programme, teaching undergraduate courses in the Departments of Social Sciences, and actively participating in the research community, both within AISSR and at national and international levels.

Close-knit community

As a PhD student at AISSR, you will be part of a vibrant community that values your growth and development. We offer coaching, training, and a strong PhD Community to support you throughout your doctoral journey. We encourage our students to publish their research early in their careers, enhancing their academic profiles and fostering their future career prospects.

Programme Groups

You will be assigned to an AISSR programme group where you will conduct your research and be immersed in a supportive and collaborative environment. We are excited about newly interest in pursuing a PhD at the University of Amsterdam and look forward to welcoming postgraduate students to our dynamic academic community at AISSR.

Communication with others, categorizing and identifying people and objects, establishing symbolic and moral boundaries, is strongly influenced by culture. Moreover, culture is the way we try to understand and interact with the world around us. At Cultural Sociology, the way social meanings and expressions associate culture will be questioned. How do people create status differences and maintain boundaries between groups? How are international beauty standards (re)produced?

The Institutions, Inequalities, and Life courses programme (IIL) examines institutions in a broad way as the formal and informal rules and arrangements in society that govern individual behavior and social relationships. Examples of institutions are welfare states, labor market arrangements, educational systems, occupational groups, norms and rules in organizations, and gender role norms.

The programme group Political Sociology researches evolving relations of conflict and cohesion in various national and international settings. Our research on citizenship, politics, policies, social movements and the state extends beyond actor-centred approaches through relational analyses and a keen eye for power differentials.

Governance and Inclusive Development (GID) scrutinizes development dynamics at various geographical, jurisdictional and temporal scales, realizing that these are situated in different but interconnected multi-level processes. GID analyses and rethinks dominant development paradigms, and engages with international, national and local development practices, policies and debates to identify viable and socially just alternatives.

The Political and Economic Geographies (PEG) group investigates the role of multi-scalar relationships that are crucial in understanding contemporary economic and political geographies.

The researchers within Urban Geographies study the socio-spatial processes that shape cities and urban life across the world. Our research concentrates on the formation of urban difference and inequality. It seeks to understand how specific spaces, places and mobilities reflect, reproduce and transform social differentiation in terms of class, ethnicity, generation, gender and sexuality. In addition, it studies how resources, risks and political voice are distributed unevenly across urban spaces and populations, analyzing geographies of inequality within and between city regions.

Urban Planning research and teaching at the University of Amsterdam focuses on the relationships between the social, spatial, and environmental dimensions of urban processes, and on ways of purposefully and positively impacting on them.

The research program Challenges to Democracy studies the consequences of current political developments and their historical roots for democratic governance. How do democratic regimes maintain political stability? To what extent can they deliver political equality, legitimacy and prevent societal polarization?

Ongoing trends towards transnational integration of markets and economic transactions are giving rise to far-reaching transformations of governance both within and beyond the nation-state. The Political Economy and Transnational Governance (PETGOV) programme group focuses on the drivers, dynamics, and consequences of these epochal developments in political and economic life.

In recent decades, there has been a growing divergence between the organisation of society and the inherited conceptual framework of the 20th century political sciences. The Transnational Configurations, Conflict and Governance group seeks to re-examine established notions of identities, categorizations and boundaries defined by classical political science concepts through different forms of empirical investigation.

We investigate the manifold ways gender, race, class, citizenship, religion, and sexuality are made and unmade in everyday life, including the ways in which differences and similarities among people, communities, and other living things are created, contested, celebrated or distrusted. We are interested in the everyday experiences of belonging and exclusion and how they shape individuals, institutions, and environments in lasting ways. Our research delves into the political dimensions and the impact these have on people's aspirations and pursuits. We investigate the aesthetics of these world making projects, their pasts, presents and futures.

The Health, Care, and Body programme group aims to analyse evolving health experiences, sexual identities, body practices, and social/cultural influences on scientific knowledge utilization in clinical settings. It also examines care and self-help practices, the exercise of biomedical power, and patterns of resistance or acceptance of medical regimes, scientific knowledge, and technology.

The social consequences of the mobility of people, goods, power, and ideas constitute the central focus of the Moving Matters research programme. Members of the research group explore migrating people and moving commodities, as well as the shifting networks that result from such practices. These networks stretch from the local to the transnational and necessarily involve encounters with the state through deportation regimes, access to resources and technologies, border infrastructures, decolonial and postcolonial movements, labour relations, and violence and conflict.

The Graduate Studies Office administers a DCU Postgraduate Research Conference and Travel Grant . Each postgraduate research student, full-time or part-time, can apply in the period of his or her studentship for a Conference and Travel Grant from the DCU Research Committee. The scheme is administered through the Graduate Studies Office (GSO), based in GLA.LG13 in the McNulty Building, Glasnevin Campus. Further information is available at the Graduate Studies Office scholarships page .

The Faculty Research Committee allocates some funds to administer a competitive Journal Publication Scheme , a call for which is issued normally at the end of October or beginning of November.  The scheme is available to research students in their 3rd or later year in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, DCU.  The scheme provides support for research leading to publication in a SCOPUS-ranked journal. The article can be sole-authored by the student or co-authored with a member of DCU staff, most typically but not exclusively a student’s supervisor.  Items supported could include fieldwork; archive / research travel; conference dissemination; data generation.  Depending on the budget allocation and number of applicants the maximum value of any single award can change but generally it will be no more than €1,000.

For a list of the nearly 10,000 Scopus-ranked journals in arts, humanities and social sciences and their ranking in each discipline, see this open access website .

The Irish Research Council (IRC) normally runs a competitive scheme annually for PhD scholarships. If you are interested in applying to this scheme, you should first contact a prospective supervisor in the relevant School. Existing PhD students should discuss applications with their supervisor. For further information on this scheme, see: IRC Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme .

IRC Applications

All research students in receipt of a faculty or school funded scholarship must apply to the Irish Research Council’s Postgraduate Research scheme. The Associate Dean for Research facilitates a workshop for applicants to this scheme in October each year.  If applicants are successful in securing an award from the IRC the following information is relevant:

  • Students receive confirmation directly from the IRC re award and contract.
  • Research funds are managed by the student and supervisor in line with IRC contract.
  • The student's Supervisor receives an email from DCU Finance Office detailing the Project subcost.
  • This new subcost is set up specifically to manage your award and the Supervisor needs to complete the 'hierarchy' setup to enable transactions.
  • The associated scholarship stipend is processed via Faculty office and GSO.
  • Funds can be drawn down by purchasing materials through the Purchase order process (funds taken directly from subcost) or reclaiming expenses using the NIER process or the  Core system (if you have access).  Your Supervisor is the approver of your expenses and all expenditure must be approved prior to purchase.

Claiming Expenses

Students in receipt of a scholarship from the IRC or schools may be entitled to claim expenses depending on the terms and conditions of your contract or scholarship letter e.g. IRP or visa costs, equipment. To claim your expenses you must complete a Non Invoice Expenditure Requisition Form available via your School Assistant.  Authorisation of the expenditure is the responsibility of your Supervisor (IRC costs),  the Head of School (IRP or visa costs), or Faculty Research Administrator (faculty granted research awards) depending on the expense and the account being charged.  If you are unsure, your School Assistant will advise you. Return the completed form along with original receipts to your School Assistant.

Purchase order process (IRC Awardees only)

If you want to purchase items such as software, laptops etc. you can do so by using the University's financial system, Agresso.  The supplier e.g. Dell, may already be set up as a supplier on this system so all you need to do is send the following details to the School Assistant:

  • what you want to purchase,
  • who you want to purchase from,
  • the cost ex. VAT,
  • the VAT rate
  • your IRC subcost to charge the expense to.

This will generate a purchase order (PO) which you can send to the supplier.  The supplier should quote this PO number on their invoice which they send directly to [email protected] . When the invoice is approved by the Faculty Office, payment is issued within the next week.
