Introduction

Health and Fitness are like the two sides of a coin. One must remain fit in order to maintain good Health. In today’s contemporary world, it has become all the more essential that we maintain our Health and physique. In the following long and short speech on Health and Fitness, we have discussed what it means to be fit and its importance in our lives. The speech on physical Fitness explores the various ways as to how we can make time in our busy schedules to ensure that our Health is not compromised in any way. The informative speech on Fitness given below can prove to be very beneficial for the readers.

The quality of life of a human being is not judged by how much he earns but rather by how much he invests in his life. Personal wellbeing and maintaining your body is of the utmost importance for all people. Health is that aspect of one’s life which deals with the physical and mental wellbeing of a person. For a person to live a good life, his personal wellbeing is the first criterion. The physical capacities of a person must be up to the task of his daily work style. A person can be unhappy even if he is not in good Health but someone who is not in good Health will never be able to be happy in his life. A very important thing to note here is that when we talk of Health, we not only talk about the physical appearance of someone but rather the cohesive betterment of an individual. For the individual to be in completely good Health, his mental Health is as important as his physical Health. One should be open about the issues of his or her mental Health and use practices like Yoga to improve their mental Health.

What is Fitness?

A lot of people in our country confuse dealing with Health issues with just making hospitals and taking medicines. That is very wrong to approach the well-being of an individual. To achieve the cohesive wellbeing of an individual or the society as a whole, care should be taken before disease hits an individual by focusing on the Fitness of the people. It is very important to be fit in one’s life as Fitness is something that cannot be bought with money. Fitness is an indicator of discipline and a good lifestyle which should be followed by everyone. A fit person always finds himself at an advantage in the real world.

Long Speech on Health and Fitness

Hello and welcome to everyone present here. On today’s special occasion, I am very excited to present a speech on physical Fitness. Before I begin, I would like each one of you to take a moment and ask yourself what does Health and Fitness mean to you and do you consider yourself to be fit? I am sure all of you must have unique answers of your own. As such, in this speech on Fitness, I would like to provide a general as well as personal insight about what it means to be Healthy and fit.

We must have all come across the old adage, ‘Health is Wealth’ and it is indeed. As we all know, remaining Healthy is key in order to live a fulfilling life. When we speak about being Healthy, we imply the ability to function optimally both physically and mentally. As we explore the dynamics of Health and Fitness, we have to acknowledge the fact that mental Health is as important as physical Health.

So why is it important to be Healthy and physically fit? Because, as human beings, we have limited time on earth and being fit is one of the key requirements that allow us to live and enjoy life. A fit person is more likely to make the most of his/her time in the journey of life. Over the centuries, people have stressed on the importance of good Health. A number of great discoveries and inventions, such as vaccinations and cutting edge technologies have been developed in order to ensure that human beings are able to live a Healthy life. Since the start of civilization, people have embraced various means to ensure that they remain Healthy.

Now, as we discuss the importance of being fit, we must also explore the key components that allow us to be so. When we think about Health and Fitness, the first thought that crosses our mind is exercise and rightly so. As a matter of fact, there is no denying that exercise is the first step towards ensuring that you remain fit. Exercise in any form allows the release of the hormone endorphin, which triggers a feeling of positivity and allows you to make the most of your day.

However, it is important to remember that exercising is only one of the components of being physically fit. In addition to exercise, you must also maintain a Healthy diet. The inclusion of whole grain, proteins, fruits and green leafy vegetables in your diet will ensure that your digestive system is functioning optimally which is a must for maintaining good Health. In addition, you must also ensure to get 6-8 hours of sleep every day in order for your body to metabolize well.

As we have already mentioned above that being fit refers to physical as well as mental Health, it is necessary that we give equal importance to both. Practices such as yoga, meditation can prove to be very relaxing and one often finds solace in them. They allow you to relax and take your mind off the feelings that wear you down. Moreover, one should not hesitate to seek professional help if they do not feel invigorated mentally.

In conclusion, I would like to say that we endeavour all our lives to make sure that we have a better life. So, why not make each day more enjoyable by being Healthy and fit? Make time for yourself, get some exercise, practise meditation and live fully.

Short Speech on Health and Fitness

A hearty welcome to everyone gathered here. Today, I stand before you to deliver a short speech on Fitness. All of us must, at some point in our lives, have heard about the importance of exercise and Fitness. To ensure that we leave Healthily, being fit is an essential criterion. With only a proper body and mind, one can be happy and enjoy and live fully.

Now, our speech on physical Fitness will be resoundingly empty if we do not talk about the importance of exercise for maintaining physical Fitness. If you want to be fit, you will need to exercise on a regular basis. Although with our jam-packed schedules, it seems like an impossible feat to achieve, we must make sure that we make time for an exercise routine. Exercising is crucial not only for being physically fit but also helps to maintain a Healthy mind as the hormones released during exercising help counteract negative thoughts or feelings.

A proper and balanced diet is also equally essential in order to maintain a Healthy physique. A diet containing whole foods and fibres ensures active metabolism is being maintained and the proper functioning of the digestive system. One should also try and include probiotics in the diet for maintaining gut Health.

Since a Healthy individual is not only limited to being physically fit, I would also like to throw some light on mental Health as well. With our busy schedules, we often overburden ourselves with work and tend to ignore our mental Health, which can have devastating effects in the long run. Mental Health, if not more, is as important as physical Health. If we are engrossed with feelings of depression, anxiety, etc., we must make sure to meditate as it will help bring a sense of calm.

To conclude, I would like to say that practices that harm our Health should be avoided and instead we should try to make our lives more fulfilling by focusing on our Health and Fitness.

Giving 2-minute speech

Giving memorable 2-minute speeches are tricker than giving 2-minute speeches.

Speeches are an effective way to share your understanding, opinion, or perspective on a topic. It doesn’t matter if your speech is for 2 minutes, 10 minutes, or 50 minutes, the main essence of any speech is to reach the audience .

2-minute speeches are quite effective if presented in a well-structured manner. In fact, giving 2-minute speeches can also help you improve your public speaking skills. And that is the reason why schools ask the students to give 2-minute speeches for every assignment!

Now we understand you might have tons of questions when it comes to 2-minute speeches, but fret not, we’ve got you covered. Read till the end of the blog to get a more comprehensive idea about 2-minute speeches.

Also, check out our video here if you want a very short glimpse of the article:

Is a 2-minute speech too short?

2-minute speeches come under the category of short speeches. So ideally 2 minute speeches are short speeches . But when we say is it too short? Then the answer will be subjective.

For instance, If you are to present your research findings then a 2-minute speech would not do justice to years of your work. But at the same time if you are giving a self-introduction then 2 minute speeches are more than enough!

How long is a 2-minute speech?

To understand how long 2-minute speeches should be, you need to understand your pace of speaking which is the number of words spoken per minute.   An average person usually speaks about 130-150 words per minute . So for 2-minute speeches, 260-300 words should be sufficient.

When it comes to the number of pages for a 2-minute speech, then your speech can be half to one page long . It all depends on the font size that you use!

Similarly, the number of sentences that would make up a 2-minute speech can vary depending on the font size that you use or your handwriting.

Writing 2-minute speeches

1. choose a topic.

The very first step in writing your speech is to know what you want to talk about, which is your topic !

You can either come up with the topic yourself or you can search for a broad topic on the internet and then narrow it down as per your liking.

So if for example, you are writing a 2-minute speech on unity as strength , you may want to focus on a particular instance wherein unity shown by people worked as their strength and helped them achieve a goal, like a freedom struggle.

2. Decide on your takeaway

If you are wondering what takeaways are, then they are your answer to the question “why are you presenting this particular topic to the audience?”

For some the answer could be, to educate, give another perspective on a widely studied topic, or even awaken the audience to take action .

In 2 minute speeches, the clock ticks faster so you should ideally focus on only 1 takeaway .

Once you have figured out why you want to present the topic to your audience or listeners, you can then move to the next stage of research.

3. Research for your speech

When you begin researching for 2 minutes speeches, you don’t have to get into tons of details . The idea is to give the audience enough information to understand your topic within a short time.

For starters, you can browse your topic on Google , YouTube , Instagram , and other social media channels. You might also want to research some facts or statistics related to your topic as it increases the credibility of your speech.

4. Structure your speech

There are 3 things to be kept in mind while structuring your speech. They are ethos, pathos, and logos.

Ethos means credibility . It is concerned with giving the audience a reason to believe in you. So, if your speech is about the impact of gaming on violent behavior, mentioning that you are a psychologist would add credibility to your speech.

Pathos is related to emotions . The idea is to connect with the listeners through emotions. And the easiest way to do that is through stories !

In the example above, you can share a story of a client who developed violent behavior patterns after spending a considerable amount of time on gaming and how they are doing now.

Logos means logic . Adding logical elements like facts, statistics, and quotes by famous personalities helps drive your main idea forward in a more rational sense.

Again, taking the example of the impact of gaming on violent behavior, logos could include a sentence like:

School shootings have increased from 11 in 2009 to 93 in 2021. It is a staggering number and when you take a deeper look into it, you’ll find that a considerable number of these shooters were addicted to gaming.

Editing is something we believe is a very crucial part of giving a memorable 2-minute speech. Why?

Because 2-minute speeches aren’t only about what you say but also about what you choose not to say.

Editing also helps you focus on your topic more clearly rather than drifting or diversifying your topic.

Delivering 2-minute Speeches

1. establish your takeaway.

Since you had already decided on your takeaway while writing the speech, you are well aware of it. But does your audience have any idea yet? No!

While they might infer why you are presenting the particular topic after listening to your speech, you cannot leave it to that.

Establish your takeaway right at the beginning of your speech , so that the audience also understands what they can expect from your speech.

2. How to begin a 2 minute Speech (Simple beginning)

This might come as a shocker, especially because we are always told to begin with a Bang!

For 2-minute speeches, if you end up spending a lot of your time on the beginning, you will have to shorten the main content of your speech.

Starting in a simple and direct manner suits best in such cases.

A few ways in which you can begin your 2-minute speeches are given below:

If you are to introduce yourself, you can begin simply by saying your name. “Good afternoon everyone, I am Xyz
”

You can also use ethos, pathos, and logos to begin your 2-minute speeches.

“Mumbai is known for 2 things gateway of India and potholes. Being someone who has lost a close friend of mine due to the careless work done towards these potholes , I’m here to address the issue we so conveniently drive over”
“About a year ago, in this very month of July, it was raining heavily in Mumbai. I remember this because there happened to be a friend of mine who was supposed to meet me for a meeting, we had that day, but he didn’t make it. The reason? Heavily flooded roads covered with potholes that he couldn’t see. A tragic accident or a convenient murder?”
“In 2018, Mumbai alone witnessed 522 accidents caused by potholes”

3. Emphasize

Repeating or rather stressing certain words gives rhythm to your speech. It also helps in easy learning and increases the chance of easy recall among the audience.

4. How to End a 2 Minute Speech

When it comes to 2-minute speeches, your conclusion or closing lines are very important. The reason is that your audience will mostly remember the last part of your speech better than the rest .

Make sure to restate the takeaway and main crux of your speech . You can also end your speech by quoting some famous personalities . In many speeches, the speaker asks the audience to take action or to think about a question that they leave the audience with.

So, we now know how your phone helps you socialize but keeps you away from the same people physically. We have been living in this virtual world for quite some time now. The least you can do is to keep your technology aside especially when you are with people you care about. An hour without your phone won’t hurt, will it?

Impromptu 2-minute speeches

Impromptu speeches are ones where you are given the topic on the spot with little to no time to prepare for the speech. In such cases, you barely have any time to go about carrying out thorough research and structuring your speech.

Rather you can keep a few frameworks in your mind and then structure the speech accordingly on the spot. This is the most convenient way of delivering effective impromptu 2-minute speeches.

A few frameworks that you can use for your 2-minute impromptu speeches are:

1. PREP model

PREP stands for Point, Reason, Example, and Point . This essentially means that you begin by talking about something, then give a reason that justifies that point. You then follow it with an example to back your point and end by repeating the point to reach your audience in a structured manner.

2. WWW model

No, WWW doesn’t stand for World Wide Web. Rather it means answering 3 questions,

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do?
  • Where are you going from here?

WWW works best when you have to give an impromptu introduction of yourself .

An example of using the WWW model to introduce yourself is given below.

Hello everyone, I am Arsh M, a fashion designer, and advocate of sustainability. During my college years, I was astonished by the amount of cloth waste produced each day. Upon researching, I realized that the fashion industry happens to be one of the biggest polluters in the world. This motivated me to work towards bringing more sustainable styling choices for everyone. That is when I began my venture in Sustainaesthetic. We are a completely sustainable and animal cruelty-free brand that aims to provide you with diverse sustainable styling options at a very affordable rate so that saving the planet doesn’t hurt your pockets!

3. Pointer Format

As the name suggests, the pointer format involves dividing your content into 3-5 points . This will make it easier for you to talk about each point for a couple of seconds before moving to the next. At the same time, it sounds very structured and may be easy to recall.

An example of a pointer format is a speech given the by CEO of Pepsico Indra Nooyi .

Famous 2-minute speeches

1. indra nooyi.

The speech given by Pepsico’s CEO is well-written and spoken . She begins by appreciating India, her home country, and then moves on to briefly talk about her 3 life lessons. Diving her speech into such crisp segments with an introduction, 3 pointers and finally, a conclusion, makes the speech very comprehensive and structured .

2. Denzel Washington

The speech given by Denzel Washington is one of the most motivating speeches of all time . It is because of the way he calmly delivers the speech by taking required pauses to stress the important lines.

2-minute speeches from movies

Speeches in movies usually bring out the emotion of awe, inspiration, or sympathy . We will look at two such 2-minute inspirational speeches from movies.

1. Any Given Sunday

The scene on any given day is worth noting for its storytelling approach . Al Pacino begins his speech with brutal honesty when he says “ We are in hell gentlemen.”

He then goes on to talk about how the game is very similar to everyone’s life and emphasizes being at the right place at the right time.

“One second early or one second late, you miss a catch,” he says. In the latter half of his speech, he increases his voice as if trying to reach his player’s very core, in an attempt to motivate them to do their level best in the game.

2. Coach Carter

This speech scene of Coach Carter is unlike other traditional scenes where the coach inspires his students. Rather, one of the students gives a very short speech that moves not only his teammates but also his teacher.

It can also be counted as a very effective thank you speech!

Monologues happen to be yet another powerful tool used in 2-minute speeches from movies. Monologues are long dialogues given by a single character. Let’s take a look at some of the most striking monologues given in movies

2-minute dramatic monologue for male

When it comes to dramatic monologues for males, the dialogue is often very inspiring or tries to instill the right amount of motivation among the team players or the soldiers. Let us take a look at 2 such dramatic monologues given by male characters in movies that had an amazing impact on their audience.

1. V for Vendetta

V for vendetta isn’t only an amazing movie, but this monologue by V is out of the ordinary. In the scene, V introduces himself to a woman whom he had just saved.

He uses alliteration by introducing himself with words that start with V. Check out the exact dialogue to get a clearer idea about the monologue.

V oila! In v iew, a humble v audevillian v eteran is cast v icariously as both v ictim and v illain by the v icissitudes of fate. This v isage, no mere v eneer of v anity, is a v estige of v ox populi, now v acant, v anished. However, this v alorous v isitation of a bygone v exation stands v ivified and had v owed to v anquish these v enal and v irulent v ermin v anguarding v ice and v ouchsafing the v iolently v icarious and v iolation of v olition
. You may call me V.

2. Wolf of Wallstreet

Who hasn’t heard of this amazing movie, wolf of wall street? One thing that we will observe when it comes to this movie is that the main lead had amazing public speaking skills . He had the power to persuade his listeners and encourage them to chip in at their level best for the growth of the organization.

In one such speech, he talks about how he isn’t leaving them and that he is here to stay.

The use of dramatic suspense followed by his change in tone and voice is something worth noting.

2-minute dramatic monologue for female

When it comes to dramatic monologues given by female characters in movies, 2 of these scenes come into our minds. The scenes are both beautifully written and executed by the actors.

1. Devil Wears Prada

In the movie Devil Wears Prada, the monologue is given by Meryl Streep who plays the role of Miranda Priestly. The speech is worth noting as she dramatically explains how even a small difference between two pieces of clothing to a lay person is a big difference for the fashion moguls as it is their opportunity to create millions!

Her passion for the industry is quite evident from the 2-minute speech. Further, the way her character picks up the pace when she talks about the reality of the fashion industry brings out her annoyance at the assistant and acts as a way of showing authority through words.

The movie 300 features a small scene where the queen requests the councilmen to send more men to war, to help not only her husband but also all the others who are already a part of it.

We see the use of ethos in the speech when the queen says the following statement:

I come to you as a mother. I come to you as a wife. I come to you as a spartan woman.

How to introduce yourself in 2 minutes?

When you have to introduce yourself in 2-minutes, it is better to follow a simple structure of past, and present.

An example of introducing yourself as a fresher for a job interview has been given below

Good afternoon, I am Arya Rose. I recently graduated from ABC college, majoring in Analytics. Growing up I had always found immense interest in math and had also won Olympiads at the school level. During my under graduation, I had taken up a course in tools for Data Analysis which made me realize my inclination toward analytics. It also encouraged me to pursue my major in the field of analytics.

Being an active member of my college, I made sure to participate in and represent my college across various events and intercollegiate festivals. I also had the chance to be a part of Hackin which is ABC’s elite Hackathon team. With the Team, we stood 2nd at Hackified, a hackathon organized by QPR college.

I was further able to put my theoretical knowledge to use by interning with this amazing organization called ANAlysis. The internship spanned over 3 months and I was able to gain an in-depth understanding of software like R and Python.

I now look forward to gaining more practical experience in the field by working and growing with your esteemed organization.

2 minute thank you speech

There are a few things that you must keep in your mind while you are giving a thank you speech.

  • Acknowledge the people around you
  • Thank them
  • Introduce yourself or why you are giving this speech.
  • Individually thank every person required.
  • Add some inspiring or heartfelt closing marks

An example of a 2-minute thank you speech for an event is given below.

I’d like to first thank every one of you present here, for joining us to make this event an absolute success. To those of you who might not know, I am Shiya M, the editor of the XYZ club and the coordinator of this amazing open mic event “Mehar.” Mehar means blessing in Punjabi, and there is a reason behind it.

On my very first day at XYZ, I was stunned to see the company ritual. Before leaving we were to recall one blessing that we received that day from our colleagues. As unusual as it felt, it was beyond measure one of the most beautiful rituals I had come across. You see in this fast-moving world, we tend to focus a lot on our busy schedule for the things we don’t have. And in all that chaos, we forget to take a look at the n number of blessings showered our way.

So, we wanted to provide a platform where you could do that, even if it was for a couple of hours.

I’d like to thank Ms. T, founder of XYZ, and her immense support and encouragement throughout, Arya and Daven for working closely with all the participants and audience members, ensuring that all your needs were met. I’d also like to thank Mr. Ajay for the technical support provided to him and how can we not thank Jay for being our lead guitarist, tuning in the vibe of this small room as per each participant’s requirement, Jay thank you!

Thank you to all the participants for presenting such beautifully written pieces, we enjoyed them all. A great round of applause for our participants!

Last, I’d like to thank our dear audience for being patient and for motivating all our speakers today you have been the most amazing audience we have ever seen!

Thank you again all of you, it was a great pleasure interacting with every one of you.

meher rakhi!

2-minute humorous speech by bridesmaid

“Hello everyone, first of all, I’d like to begin quite humbly by thanking everyone present for gathering here to celebrate the union of this beautiful couple Jess and Jim.

Now if you know jess, you know me. Because I pretty much tag along with her everywhere. Just like those lice in your hair, can’t leave her alone!

At 5, I had taken up responsibility. It was to protect this absolutely beautiful soul. But as we grew up, it turned out that she was the one who protected me. What the turn tables!

Jess, I’m grateful every day to have such an amazing sister like you in my life who motivates me to do better and talk to “decent” guys..pst they are just not my type!

You’ve been my mom at times, waiting at the door every time I’d get late which makes me wonder if mom outsourced her strictness to you? And if yes, why not me? I was the broke kid!

I’m going to miss those small things you know? How you told me it was chocolate powder when it was coffee, how I never won a game I played with you because you never played it fair, and oh how you never missed complimenting my outfit when I was wearing your clothes!

But seriously, I’m going to miss you tons. I hope you get your fairytale happily ever after! To Jess and Jim!

Ways To Structure 2 Minutes Speech

Structuring a 2-minute speech effectively is essential to ensure that your message is clear, concise, and engaging. Here are several ways to structure a 2-minute speech:

Introduction (10-15 seconds)

  • Start with a hook or attention-grabber to capture the audience’s interest.
  • Introduce yourself and briefly preview the topic you’ll be discussing.
  • State the main purpose or thesis of your speech.

Main Points (45-60 seconds)

  • Organize your speech into two or three main points that support your thesis.
  • Dedicate roughly equal time to each main point.
  • Provide supporting evidence, examples, or anecdotes for each point to reinforce your arguments.
  • Use transitions to smoothly move from one point to the next, maintaining the flow of your speech.

Conclusion (15-20 seconds)

  • Summarize the main points you’ve discussed, reinforcing your thesis.
  • End with a strong closing statement or call to action that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.
  • Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion; instead, focus on reinforcing key takeaways.

Optional: Opening Story or Quote (10-15 seconds)

  • Begin your speech with a relevant story, anecdote, or quote that sets the tone for your topic.
  • Ensure that the opening relates directly to the main points you’ll be discussing and serves to engage the audience from the start.

Optional: Visual Aid or Prop (if applicable)

  • If appropriate for your topic, consider using a visual aid or prop to enhance your speech.
  • Keep visual aids simple and relevant, using them to complement your verbal message rather than distract from it.

Optional: Audience Interaction (if applicable)

  • Engage the audience by asking a rhetorical question, prompting them to reflect on their own experiences, or inviting them to participate in a brief activity related to your topic.
  • Be mindful of time constraints and ensure that any audience interaction enhances rather than detracts from the overall structure of your speech.

Remember to practice your speech multiple times to ensure that you can deliver it comfortably within the 2-minute timeframe. Focus on clarity, coherence, and confidence in your delivery, and be prepared to adapt if you find that certain sections of your speech are taking longer than anticipated.

With careful planning and rehearsal, you can structure a compelling and effective 2-minute speech that effectively conveys your message to the audience.

Mastering the art of 2 minute speeches is a valuable skill that can benefit students in various aspects of their lives. By learning how to effectively communicate ideas within a short timeframe, students can improve their time management, attention span, and overall public speaking abilities.

By choosing the right 2 minute speech topics for students, structuring their speech effectively, and delivering it with confidence, students can excel in this endeavor and become successful communicators.

3 Minute Speech on Health is Wealth

Short speech on health is wealth.

Health is the biggest wealth for a human being in his/her entire lifetime. One can survive without excess money but can’t survive without good health. Health is something that we can’t buy with money but we can take care of it and we can cure it when needed with the help of the money. If a person is not having good health, he will not be able to enjoy his/her life to the fullest. Money doesn’t make a person rich and happy but good health does. Moreover, a person can’t feel complete and happy without good health.

speech on health is wealth

Good health is one of the main elements of happiness that a person needs in his/her life. We can see various people around us that are happy without having a lot of money. However, they are happy because they have good health and they enjoy their lives. We can also see many people that are having a lot of money and are rich enough to buy anything they want but still, they are not totally happy. Moreover, they are not satisfied with their lives. The reason behind the sadness of the rich people is mostly that they don’t have good health and they worry about this thing a lot. However, they can’t buy good health with their money.

How to get a Healthy Life?

When a person thinks positively then he\she improves his\her chemistry from within. For a healthy lifestyle, one should follow many rules and should also sacrifice many things in their daily routines. On the other hand, if a person spends half an hour on exercise daily then he/she will be able to eliminate the toxicity from the body.

So, for well-being and happiness, it is important to switch to a healthy lifestyle.

Finally, we all are aware that our health is the most important wealth that we have. English Summary

2 Minute Speech On The Importance Of Mental Health In English

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on the importance of mental health. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of self-awareness, the ability to manage everyday stresses, and the capacity for productive work. Mental health serves as the cornerstone of both individual well-being and a community’s efficient operation. The country’s development depends on its health.

More than 450 million people around the world suffer from mental diseases. By 2020, depression will be the second most prevalent illness worldwide. The cost of mental illness will exceed the capacity of developed and developing countries to provide sufficient care. It is more critical than ever to look for strategies to both promote and treat mental disorders due to the rising costs of mental illness on society and the economy.

It is undeniably true that sadness causes heart and vascular disorders, and that physical and mental health are intimately related. Alcohol and tobacco use, eating sensibly, frequent exercise, getting enough sleep, engaging in safe sexual behavior, and following medical advice are all health behaviors that are affected by mental problems, which increase the risk of physical sickness.

Social issues like unemployment, disintegrated families, poverty, drug abuse, and related criminality are also influenced by mental illness. Immune system dysfunction is significantly influenced by poor mental health. Patients with depression who are medically unwell perform worse than those without. Depression risk is increased by long-term conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Thank you.

Actually, I have written this speech for 1, 2, and 3 minutes. Now, it’s only up to you which one you choose.

All these speeches can be given anywhere whether it’s a school or a public place. It seemed a very important topic, that’s why I decided to write an article on it.

So, without any delay, let’s start writing the speech.

Health is Wealth Speech in English for 1, 2 & 3 Minutes –

1. health is wealth speech for 1 minute –.

Hello everyone, my name is Sachin Kulkarni and today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth. Please forgive me if I make any mistakes.

Good health is one of the most valuable assets for human beings in life. If someone’s health is not good, he can neither live his life comfortably nor can enjoy the moments of life like others.

Health is something that can be cured with money, but can’t be bought. That means no matter how rich we are, we can’t buy good health.

Everyone wants good health but no one follows things that are responsible for good health. To be healthy, we should meditate, do physical work, eat healthy food, etc. But, people don’t pay attention to them.

We can live life without money but not without good health. So, we should pay special attention to our health because only good health can take us towards the peak.

If we really want to live a healthy life, we have to wake up early in the morning and do physical and mental exercises for a definite interval of time, as well as we have to consume hymns that keep our health good.

At last, I’ll request to everybody to maintain his health for the enjoyment of life.

Also, see the speech on knowledge is power for 2 minutes .

2. Health is Wealth Speech for 2 Minutes –

First of all, my greetings to everyone who is listening to me here. My name is Subodh Bharti and I study in class 8th. Today, I got an opportunity to express my thoughts about health is wealth. So, if I made any mistake, please give me pardon.

As you all know that progress in any field is possible only when we have good health. In other words, success can’t be achieved without good health. Nevertheless, people don’t focus on their health.

We all are so busy shaping our future that we have forgotten to care about our health, whereas only good health can take us towards a good future. We don’t want to do any physical or mental work. As a result, we have become very lazy.

In the earlier decades, when there was no technology, we were not dependent on any machine or equipment, but increasing technology has made us dependent.

Today, we are completely dependent on machines. We don’t require much physical activity while doing any work, due to which we’re getting surrounded by various types of diseases. To become healthy, it’s essential to be mentally, intellectually, physically active and eat food that can strengthen us in every way.

In the true sense, our good health is the only wealth. if we are healthy, we can be happy and enjoy our life with no stress. If we are unwell, no matter how much money we have, it cannot give us happiness.

So, always try to stay fit so that you don’t have any stress or disease.

Also, see the speech on the importance of yoga .

3. Health is Wealth Speech for 3 Minutes –

Good morning to all the respected teachers and students, today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth, please forgive me if I make any mistakes unknowingly.

Health is wealth, in this proverb health is compared to wealth. No matter how much money we have, if we are physically unwell, no one is poorer than us.

It’s also believed that whether we are rich or poor, diseases don’t come after seeing our prosperity and poverty, but it’s absolutely true that they capture those who remain physically or mentally inactive.

In today’s era, we are chasing our work so fast that we don’t worry about our health.

There is no doubt that working is necessary for our livelihood, but we should also take care of our health. Only a healthy body motivates us to do work and if we are unhealthy, we cannot do anything efficiently.

Due to our body being unhealthy, neither we feel energetic nor are we motivated to do any work. That’s why it is always said that health is the first wealth.

To stay away from diseases, we should exercise regularly and do it on a daily basis. At the same time, we should take healthy food and be active in our work as much as possible because inactivity and laziness are such things that give a feast to diseases.

If possible, all parents should motivate their children to take yoga classes or regular exercise so that they can lead healthy and happy lives. Also, we have to make a habit of being happy by reducing anger. It has been known for centuries how beneficial laughter is for health.

A healthy and happy life will come only when we are physically and mentally fit otherwise we will spend our days in despair and passivity.

Now, I end my words and suggest you keep your body healthy.

Also, see the speech on child labour for 2 minutes .

Final words –

In the end, I hope that the article must have satisfied you and you have got here the best speeches on health is wealth.

Now, you can choose the best one which can attract more attention while delivering the speech. If you really liked this article, please share it with those who need it.

Speech on Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. It’s all about how you think, feel, and behave.

Sometimes, life’s problems can cause stress and make you feel sad or anxious. That’s when you need to take care of your mental health.

1-minute Speech on Mental Health

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining me today to discuss a topic that is very important in our everyday lives – mental health. Just like our physical health, mental health is crucial for our overall well-being and the quality of our lives.

In recent times, mental health has gained significant attention. However, there still exists a social stigma around mental health issues. This stigma needs to be shattered, and we must collectively work towards creating an environment where mental health can be openly discussed and those struggling can seek help without fear of judgement.

It is important to understand that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health challenges can have a profound impact on our daily lives, relationships, and even physical health.

One of the most effective ways to promote mental health is to practice self-care. This includes activities that help us relax and maintain a balance in our lives. This may mean taking a walk in nature, spending quality time with loved ones, or simply unplugging from social media for a while. By doing so, we can reduce stress and anxiety, thereby nurturing our mental health.

Moreover, creating awareness and sharing information about mental health is crucial. The more we educate ourselves and others, the better equipped we will be to identify when someone needs help and support. It is vital that we lend a listening ear and provide empathy and encouragement to those who are struggling.

Lastly, let us remember that seeking professional help is not a sign of weakness but an act of courage. Mental health professionals can provide the guidance and support needed to overcome challenges and lead a more fulfilling life.

In conclusion, mental health is a vital aspect of our well-being that should not be overlooked or stigmatized. By practicing self-care, spreading awareness, and encouraging open conversations, we can create a healthier and more compassionate society for all. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Mental Health

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and dear friends, I stand before you today to discuss a topic that is not only close to my heart but also of great importance in today’s fast-paced world – mental health. It is an issue that affects each one of us, either directly or indirectly, and yet, it remains stigmatized and ignored.

Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It plays a crucial role in how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. Our mental health determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices that shape our lives. Just as physical health is essential for our overall well-being, mental health is equally important.

We live in a world filled with stress and competition. We are constantly striving to achieve our goals, to be successful, and to meet the expectations of others. In this pursuit, we often forget that our mental health is equally important as our physical health. The stress we face daily is not only detrimental to our emotional well-being but also leads to various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and other disorders.

Anxiety is a common mental health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. It’s a feeling of uneasiness, worry, or fear that can be mild or severe. It can manifest in various forms such as social anxiety, panic disorders, and phobias. Anxiety can be debilitating and prevent individuals from living a fulfilling life.

Depression, on the other hand, is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. It is a common and serious medical illness that affects how we feel, think, and act. Untreated depression can lead to long-term psychological and physical health problems.

It is crucial for us to understand that mental health issues are not something to be ashamed of or to hide away. They are real medical conditions that require attention and care, just like any other health ailment. We must break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about it.

One way we can support mental health is by practicing self-care. Self-care involves taking the time to prioritize our own well-being and making choices that positively impact our mental, emotional, and physical health. It can be as simple as taking a break to relax, pursuing a hobby, or engaging in regular exercise.

Additionally, we must learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, both in ourselves and others. Early intervention and support can greatly improve the lives of those affected by mental health disorders. Encourage open communication with friends and family about their feelings and experiences, and listen with empathy and understanding when they share their struggles.

Another critical aspect of promoting mental health is seeking professional help when needed. Mental health professionals, such as psychologists and psychiatrists, can provide valuable guidance, support, and treatment options for those struggling with mental health issues.

Lastly, we must focus on spreading awareness about mental health and its importance. Educate yourself and others on the topic and participate in mental health initiatives in your community. Advocating for better mental health services and policies can lead to positive change and improved support for those in need.

In conclusion, mental health is an essential aspect of our overall well-being, and its importance cannot be overstated. By practicing self-care, recognizing signs and symptoms, seeking professional help, and promoting awareness, we can create a supportive environment for those affected by mental health issues. As a society, we have the power to break the stigma surrounding mental health and make a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals. Let’s work together to prioritize mental health and create a world where everyone can lead a healthy, fulfilling life. Thank you.

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis presided over the Vatican’s somber Easter Vigil service on Saturday night, delivering a 10-minute homily and baptizing eight people, a day after suddenly skipping the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum as a health precaution.

Francis entered the darkened, silent St. Peter’s Basilica in his wheelchair, took his place in a chair and offered an opening prayer. Sounding somewhat congested and out of breath, he blessed an elaborately decorated Easter candle, the flame of which was then shared with other candles until the whole basilica twinkled.

Over an hour later, Francis delivered a 10-minute homily in a strong voice, clearing his throat occasionally.

The evening service, one of the most solemn and important moments in the Catholic liturgical calendar, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. The Vatican had said Francis skipped the Good Friday procession to ensure his participation in both the vigil service Saturday night, which usually lasts about two hours, and Easter Sunday Mass a few hours later.

The 87-year-old Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, has been battling respiratory problems all winter that have made it difficult for him to speak at length. He and the Vatican have said he has had bronchitis, a cold or the flu.

He has canceled some audiences and often asked an aide to read aloud some of his speeches. But the alarm was raised when he ditched his Palm Sunday homily altogether last week at the last minute and then decided suddenly Friday to stay home rather than preside over the Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum re-enacting Christ’s crucifixion.

The Vatican said in a brief explanation that the decision was made to “conserve his health.”

The decision appeared to have paid off Saturday night, as Francis was able to recite the prayers of the lengthy vigil service, and perform the sacrament of baptism for the eight adults. The baptism is a traditional feature of the Vatican’s Easter Vigil service.

In his homily Francis referred to the stone that the faithful believe was removed from Christ’s tomb after his death. Francis urged Catholics to remove the stones in their lives that “block the door of our hearts, stifling life, extinguishing hope, imprisoning us in the tomb of our fears and regrets.”

“Let us lift our eyes to him and ask that the power of his resurrection may roll away the heavy stones that weigh down our souls,” he said.

Holy Week is trying for a pope under any circumstance, given four days of liturgies, rites, fasting and prayer. But that is especially true for Francis, who cancelled a trip to Dubai late last year, with just days to go, on doctor’s orders because of his respiratory problems.

In addition to his respiratory problems, Francis had a chunk of his large intestine removed in 2021 and was hospitalized twice last year, including once to remove intestinal scar tissue from previous surgeries to address diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinal wall. He has been using a wheelchair or cane for nearly two years because of bad knee ligaments.

In his recently published memoirs, “Life: My Story Through History,” Francis said he isn’t suffering from any health problems that would require him to resign and that he still has “ many projects to bring to fruition.”

Best 2-Minute Speech on Earth Day in English for Students

Speech on Earth Day

‘Good morning, respected teachers and fellow students. Today, I stand before you to present my ‘Speech on Earth Day.’ Earth Day is a global event celebrated on 22 April every year. Earth Day is crucial for all of us, as it reminds us of the importance of saving Earth’s limited resources for future generations. In addition, Earth Day celebrates the efforts and accomplishments of environmentalists to protect the environment.

‘Leo Tolstoy once said, ‘One of the first conditions of happiness is the link between man and nature shall not be broken.’ Globally, several environmental movements have been launched to save earth from the harmful human activities. In India, too environmental movements like the ‘Chipko Movement, ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan,’ ‘Jungle Bachao Movement’, etc. have highlighted the importance of Earth’s natural resources.’

‘In 2023, the Earth Day theme was ‘Invest in Our Planet’ . This theme was meant to encourage businesses to shift their focus towards sustainable practices. For Earth Day 2024, EARTHDAY.ORG has launched a movement called ‘Planet vs Plastics’ . The objective of this movement is to eliminate plastic use for the sake of our planet’s health. The initial target is to reduce plastic usage by 60% in all sectors by 2040. ‘

‘With the new approach to saving the earth, EARTHDAY.ORG plans to unite governments, organisations, intellectuals, students, and NGOs to call for an end to plastics for the sake of the planet and humanity. Every year, plastic production increases to more than 380 million tons. The demand to eliminate plastic from our environment will help build a plastic-free society for future generations.’

‘Kathleen Rogers, the President of the EARTHDAY.ORG, quoted, ‘The Planet vs. Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet.’

‘Our environment’s safety is our responsibility. Plastic was once an amazing product when it was produced in limited quantity. Now this useful product has become something else. It is harming our health, deteriorating our resources, polluting our water, and damaging the environment.’

‘So on this Earth Day, let’s all unite as one and fight against plastic. Only if we act now, we can save our planet from this harmful product. Thank you.’

Why Do We Celebrate Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global event observed on the 22nd of April every year. This global event was first observed on April 22, 1970. EarthDay.org organizes all the environmental movements and events on Earth Day, which honours the achievements and movements led by environmentalists to save our planet. One remarkable achievement of Earth Day is that its organizing body has more than 1 billion registered members from 195 countries.

Each year, a unique Earth Day theme is introduced, focusing on a particular issue affecting the environment.. Earthday.org releases a theme with specific measures and objectives. The Earth Day 2024 theme is ‘ Planet vs Plastics’.

Earthday.org is focusing on four goals on this Earth Day:

  • Promoting public awareness of the damage done by plastic to our environment, our health, and animals.
  • Eliminating all single-use plastics by 2030 and achieving this phase-out commitment in the United Nations Treaty on Plastic Pollution in 2024.
  • Demanding policymakers strengthen laws to end the scourge of fast fashion and the large amount of plastic it produces and uses.

Russian nexus revealed during 60 Minutes Havana Syndrome investigation into potential attacks on U.S. officials

By Scott Pelley , Aliza Chasan , Oriana Zill de Granados, Michael Rey, Emily Gordon, Kit Ramgopal, Jamie Woods

Updated on: March 31, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS News

This report is the result of a joint investigation by 60 Minutes, The Insider, and Der Spiegel

A lead U.S. military investigator examining reports of what has become known as Havana Syndrome told 60 Minutes he believes U.S. officials are being attacked by Russia and that the official threshold to prove it was set impossibly high.

Greg Edgreen, a now-retired Army lieutenant colonel who ran the Pentagon investigation into what officials refer to as "anomalous health incidents," said the bar for proof was set so high because the country doesn't want to face some very hard truths, like the existence of possible failures to protect Americans.

"Unfortunately I can't get into specifics, based on the classification," Edgreen said. "But I can tell you at a very early stage, I started to focus on Moscow."

  • Statements of White House, FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence to 60 Minutes

A 2023 government report deemed it " very unlikely " that a foreign adversary was behind the mysterious brain injuries suffered by U.S. national security officials, yet more than 100 Americans have symptoms scientists say could be caused by a beam of microwaves or acoustic ultrasound. Victims are frustrated that the government publicly doubts an adversary is targeting Americans. The ongoing, five-year 60 Minutes investigation has now uncovered new evidence pointing toward Russia.

Are we being attacked?

White House staff, CIA officers , FBI agents, and military officers and their families are among those who believe they were wounded by a secret weapon firing a high-energy beam of microwaves or ultrasound.

Edgreen said the officers targeted were top performers.

"And consistently there was a Russia nexus," he said. "There was some angle where they had worked against Russia, focused on Russia, and done extremely well."

Greg Edgreen and Scott Pelley

Last year, President Biden attended the NATO summit in Lithuania after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Multiple sources told 60 Minutes that a high-level Department of Defense official was struck during the summit. Edgreen shared what the reported incident meant to him.

"It tells me that there are no barriers on what Moscow will do, on who they will attack, and that if we don't face this head on, the problem is going to get worse," Edgreen said.

60 Minutes has agreed to withhold the last name of "Carrie," a Havana Syndrome victim who is still an FBI agent working in counterintelligence. Her case also points to Russia.

  • Havana Syndrome in Vietnam: Possible Russian role in attack on Americans, according to new evidence

She said she was home in Florida in 2021 when she was hit by a crippling force.

"And bam, inside my right ear, it was like a dentist drilling on steroids. That feeling when it gets too close to your eardrum? It's like that, times 10," she said.

At the same time, she said, the battery in her phone began to swell until it broke the case. Finally, she passed out on a couch. Because of chest pain, she was checked by a cardiologist, and then returned to duty. For months, she complained to her colleagues of memory issues and problems multitasking.

"My baseline changed," she said. "I was not the same person."

FBI agent

She spoke with the FBI's permission but wasn't allowed to talk about the investigations she was working on when she was hit. 60 Minutes learned from other sources, one of them involved Russian Vitalii Kovalev, who was caught speeding in a Ford Mustang near Key West, Florida in 2020. After a high-speed car chase, a search of the car found notes related to bank accounts along with a device capable of erasing the car's computerized data, including its GPS records. There was also a Russian passport found.

The investigation into Kovalev

What 60 Minutes has learned along with investigative partner Christo Grozev, a journalist for The Insider, an investigative magazine by Russian exiles, suggests that Kovalev was a Russian spy.

Kovalev studied in a military institute, learning about radio electronics, said Grozev, who's renowned for his experience unmasking Russian plots. After two years working in a military institute, Kovalev suddenly became a chef in New York and Washington.

"It is not an easy job to just leave that behind. Once you're in the military, and you've been trained, and the Ministry of Defense has invested in you, you remain at their beck and call for the rest of your life," Grozev said.

  • The 5-year investigation into Havana Syndrome

It's not clear what Kovalev might have been up to, but sources told 60 Minutes that, over months, he spent 80 hours being interviewed by "Carrie," who sources said had investigated several Russian spies for the FBI.

Kovalev received 30 months in jail and, after serving his time, went back to Russia in 2022, ignoring American warnings he was in danger because he'd spent so much time with the FBI. Grozev uncovered a death certificate from last year, which says Kovalev was killed at the front in Ukraine.

"One theory is that he was sent there in order for him to be disposed of," Grozev said.

Christo Grozev

Mark Zaid, "Carrie's" attorney who holds a security clearance, has more than two dozen clients suffering symptoms of Havana Syndrome. He said victims include members of the CIA, State Department and FBI.

" The one thread that I know of with the FBI personnel that is common among most, if not all, of my clients other than the family members connected to the employee, was they were all doing something relating to Russia," Zaid said.

Russian intelligence unit 29155

If it is Russia, Grozev believes Russian intelligence unit 29155 is involved. Grozev has a long track record of uncovering Russian documents and reveals he found one that may link the 29155 unit to a directed energy weapon.

It's a piece of accounting. A 29155 officer received a bonus for work on "potential capabilities of non-lethal acoustic weapons..."

"It's the closest to a receipt you can have for this," Grozev said.

There's also evidence 29155 may have been present in Tbilisi, Georgia when Americans reported incidents there. Grozev believes members of 29155 were there to facilitate, supervise, or possibly personally implement attacks on American officials using an acoustic weapon.

Sources have told 60 Minutes that an investigation centered on Russian Albert Averyanov, whose name appears on travel manifests and phone records alongside known members of 29155. He's also the son of the unit's commander.

Incidents began in Tbilisi the day after a phone call, which was intercepted. Sources said a man on the call asked in Russian: "Is it supposed to have blinking green lights?" and "should I leave it on all night?"

The next day, a U.S. official, their spouse, and their child were hit. That same week, the wife of a Justice Department official, who asked "60 Minutes" to withhold her name over safety concerns, was blindsided by a sound in her laundry room in Tbilisi on Oct. 7, 2021.

"And it just pierced my ears, came in my left side, felt like it came through the window, into my left ear," she said.

She had a piercing headache and projectile vomited.

Afterward, she looked at the security camera and spotted a vehicle outside she didn't recognize. There was also a man nearby. 60 Minutes sent a photo of Averyanov to the woman, who said it "absolutely" looks like the man she spotted outside.

"And when I received this photo, I had a visceral reaction," she said. "It made me feel sick. I cannot absolutely say for certainty that it is this man, but I can tell you that even to this day, looking at him makes me feel that same visceral reaction. And I can absolutely say that this looks like the man that I saw in the street."

Grozev found Averyanov's phone was turned off during the Tbilisi incidents, and sources say there's evidence someone in Tbilisi logged into Averyanov's personal email during this time. Grozev believes this was most likely Averyanov himself—placing him in the city.

Has there been a cover-up?

Despite incidents like the ones in Tbilisi, the official U.S. intelligence assessment released last year found that it was "very unlikely" a foreign adversary is responsible. The report did acknowledge that some intelligence agencies have only "low" or "moderate" confidence in that conclusion.

This month, the National Institutes of Health reported results of brain scans on patients with symptoms. NIH said there's no evidence of physical damage. The medical science of so-called anomalous health incidents remains vigorously debated. For its part, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says the injuries suffered by victims are probably the result of "preexisting conditions, conventional illnesses and environmental factors."

Attorney Mark Zaid

But Zaid, who's representing more than two dozen anomalous health incident clients, said he doesn't believe the entire story is in the U.S. intelligence assessment. Zaid said he knows of classified information that undermines or contradicts what's been said publicly.

"There is, in my view, without a doubt, evidence of a cover up. Now, some of that cover up is not necessarily that, 'oh, we found a weapon,'" Zaid said. "What I've seen more so is, 'we see lines of inquiry that would take us potentially to answers we don't want to have to deal with, so we're not going to explore any of those avenues.'"

As with all spy stories, much is classified and what remains is circumstantial. None of the witnesses 60 Minutes spoke with wanted to come forward, but they all felt compelled to shine a light on what they see as a war of shadows — a war America may not be winning.

"If this is what we've seen with the hundreds of cases of anomalous health incidents, I can assure that this has become probably Putin's biggest victory," Grozev said. "In his own mind this has been Russia's biggest victory against the West."

Statements from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the White House, and the FBI

In response to inquiries from 60 Minutes, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence referred to the Intelligence Community's Annual Threat Assessment commentary on anomalous health incidents. The assessment was released earlier this month and states:

"We continue to closely examine anomalous health incidents (AHIs), particularly in areas we have identified as requiring additional research and analysis. Most IC agencies have concluded that it is very unlikely a foreign adversary is responsible for the reported AHIs. IC agencies have varying confidence levels because we still have gaps given the challenges collecting on foreign adversaries—as we do on many issues involving them. As part of its review, the IC identified critical assumptions surrounding the initial AHIs reported in Cuba from 2016 to 2018, which framed the IC's understanding of this phenomenon, but were not borne out by subsequent medical and technical analysis. In light of this and the evidence that points away from a foreign adversary, causal mechanism, or unique syndromes linked to AHIs, IC agencies assess those symptoms reported by U.S. personnel probably were the result of factors that did not involve a foreign adversary. These findings do not call into question the very real experiences and symptoms that our colleagues and their family members have reported. We continue to prioritize our work on such incidents, allocating resources and expertise across the government, pursuing multiple lines of inquiry and seeking information to fill the gaps we have identified."

In response to questions from 60 Minutes, a White House spokesperson responded:

"At the start of the Biden-Harris Administration and again following the 2023 Intelligence Community assessment, the White House has directed departments and agencies across the federal government to prioritize investigations into the cause of AHIs and to examine reports thoroughly; to ensure that U.S. Government personnel and their families who report AHIs receive the support and timely access to medical care that they need; and to take reports of AHIs seriously and treat personnel with respect and compassion. The Biden-Harris administration continues to emphasize the importance of prioritizing efforts to comprehensively examine the effects and potential causes of AHIs."

In response to questions from 60 Minutes, an FBI spokesperson responded:

"The issue of Anomalous Health Incidents is a top priority for the FBI, as the protection, health and well-being of our employees and colleagues across the federal government is paramount.  We will continue to work alongside our partners in the intelligence community as part of the interagency effort to determine how we can best protect our personnel.  The FBI takes all U.S. government personnel who report symptoms seriously.  In keeping with this practice, the FBI has messaged its workforce on how to respond if they experience an AHI, how to report an incident, and where they can receive medical evaluations for symptoms or persistent effects."

Pope skips Good Friday event to preserve health ahead of Easter, Vatican says

ROME — Pope Francis skipped the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum to protect his health, the Vatican said, making a last-minute decision that added to concerns about his frail condition during a particularly busy period.

Francis had been expected to preside over the Way of the Cross procession, which re-enacts Christ’s Passion and crucifixion, and composed the meditations that are read aloud at each station. But just as the event was about to begin, the Vatican announced that Francis was following the event from his home at the Vatican.

“To conserve his health in view of the vigil tomorrow and Mass on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis will follow the Via Crucis at the Colosseum this evening from the Casa Santa Marta,” a statement from the Vatican press office said.

While Francis had also skipped the event in 2023 because he was recovering from bronchitis and it was a particularly cold night, his decision to stay home this year suggested his plans had changed suddenly.

The 87-year-old Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, has been battling what he and the Vatican have described as a case of the flu, bronchitis or a cold all winter long. For the last several weeks he has occasionally asked an aide to read aloud his speeches, and heskipped his Palm Sunday homily altogether.

The decision to stay home appeared to be very last-minute: Francis’ chair was in place on the platform outside the Colosseum where he was to preside over the rite. His close aide, Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, was on hand and moved the television screen around on the platform so Francis would have a better view of what was going on inside the Colosseum itself.

But at 9:10 p.m., five minutes before the official start of the procession, the Vatican press office announced on Telegram that he wouldn’t attend. The chair was quickly taken away.

His absence was noted with concern but understanding among some of the estimated 25,000 pilgrims who packed the area for the torchlit procession.

“I think of course it causes concern for the people who make sure that he is doing well, but he must have his reasons for the decisions that he makes,” said Marlene Steuber, who was visiting from Costa Rica. “Still I think that people are involved and very blessed and happy to be here and experience these events here in Rome.”

Brian Hopp, a visitor from Chicago, noted that Francis has had his health challenges this year.

“I definitely don’t think it was a decision taken lightly. I think a lot was taken into it and I think he probably prioritized his health for Easter, which I think is a very responsible thing to do,” Hopp said. “I know he has been going through a lot this year so I don’t expect him to be able to make every event.”

The hasty announcement recalled Francis’ last-minute decision on Palm Sunday , when the Vatican issued the pope’s homily in advance to journalists, and his aide got up to give him his glasses to read it. But Francis made clear he wouldn’t read it, and the aide put the glasses back in his pocket. The Vatican later said the homily was replaced by a moment of silent prayer.

Francis had appeared in good form earlier in the day for a Good Friday liturgy in St. Peter’s Basilica, though he remained mostly seated and it was not a particularly taxing event that required him to speak at length.

On Thursday, he left the Vatican to preside over the Holy Thursday foot-washing ritual at a Rome women’s prison. While he performed the rite from his wheelchair, Francis appeared strong and engaged with the inmates, even giving a big chocolate Easter egg to one woman’s young son.

On Saturday, he is scheduled to preside over a lengthy evening Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s, one of the most solemn events in the liturgical calendar. He also is due to preside over Easter Sunday Mass in the piazza and deliver his “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) speech rounding up global crises and threats to humanity.

In addition to his respiratory problems, Francis had a chunk of his large intestine removed in 2021 and was hospitalized twice last year, including once to remove intestinal scar tissue from previous surgeries to address diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinal wall. He has been using a wheelchair and cane for over a year because of bad knee ligaments.

In his recently published memoirs, “Life: My Story Through History,” Francis said he isn’t suffering from any health problems that would require him to resign and that he still has “ many projects to bring to fruition.”

This story has been corrected to show that this was the second time Francis skipped the event, after staying home also in 2023.

Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs and Campbell Robertson reported from Baltimore, Annie Correal and Michael Forsythe from New York, and Mike Baker from Seattle.

Follow our live coverage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore .

“Hold all traffic on the Key Bridge.”

The terse command from an officer in Baltimore’s busy commercial shipping port was one of the first warnings of a disaster that experts now predict will transform shipping on the Eastern Seaboard and change how ships and bridges function around the world. But after the cargo ship Dali lost power early Tuesday, there were precious few minutes to act.

In those minutes, many people — from the ship’s crew, who sent out a mayday signal, to the transportation authority police officers, who stopped traffic heading onto the Francis Scott Key Bridge — did what they could to avert catastrophe, most likely saving many lives.

And yet — no matter what anyone did — several factors made catastrophe all but inevitable. When a ship of this size loses engine power, there is little to be done to correct its course, even dropping an anchor down. And the Key Bridge was particularly vulnerable. As long ago as 1980, engineers had warned that the bridge, because of its design, would never be able to survive a direct hit from a container ship.

The collision and subsequent collapse of the bridge swallowed up seven road workers and an inspector who could not be alerted and pulled off the bridge in time; two were pulled alive out of the water, but four others are still missing and presumed dead. Two bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, authorities said.

Also caught up in the disaster were the ship’s 21 crew members, all from India, who had prepared for a long journey to Sri Lanka on the Dali. While none of them were hurt, they would be held on board for more than a day as the ship sat in the harbor, the ruins of the bridge tangled around it, as authorities began their investigation.

The accident, the deadliest bridge collapse in the United States in more than a decade, will have a lasting impact on the Port of Baltimore, with its 8,000 workers, and industries that rely on the port, which is the leading American hub for auto and other wheeled equipment, said Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary, on Wednesday.

“It’s difficult to overstate the impact of this collision,” Mr. Buttigieg said.

He compared the Dali, roughly as long a city block, to the size of an American aircraft carrier.

“A hundred thousand tons, all going into this pier all at once,” he said of the impact on the bridge support structure.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation into the accident, boarded the Dali on Tuesday night to gather documentation. They obtained data from the voyage data recorder, the equivalent of an aircraft’s black box, hoping that it could help investigators determine what led to the accident.

Mr. Buttigieg said that any private party found liable in the accident “will be held responsible.”

It was about half an hour past midnight on Tuesday when the Dali, loaded with cargo containers, departed its dock, guided by two tugboats, as is customary. On board was a local harbor pilot with more than 10 years of experience and deep familiarity with Baltimore’s port, as well as an apprentice pilot in training.

The sky above the Patapsco River was clear and still, lit by a full moon.

At 1:25 a.m., after the two tugboats detached and turned back, the Dali had accelerated to about 10 miles per hour as it approached the Key Bridge. But just then, according to a timeline released by the National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday, “numerous audible alarms” started sounding on the ship.

For reasons still being investigated, the ship’s powerful propulsion system stopped. The lights flickered out.

The ship had a “complete blackout,” according to Clay Diamond, head of the American Pilots’ Association, who was briefed on the account of the pilot of the Dali. (The chair of the N.T.S.B., Jennifer Homendy, said officials were still trying to determine whether the power failure was complete.)

The harbor pilot noticed the ship starting to swing right, in the direction of one of the piers holding up the Key Bridge. At 1:26, he called for the tugs to return; he urged the captain to try to get the engine back up and directed the crew to steer hard left. As a last ditch measure, at 1:27, he ordered the crew to throw down the port anchor.

One of the tugboats, the Eric McAllister, turned around and raced back toward the ship.

But the failures onboard were cascading. The emergency generator had kicked on, sending a puff of thick smoke belching from the ship’s exhaust stack and briefly restoring the lights, radar and steering. It did not help. With no effective propulsion, the 95,000-ton ship had become an unstoppable object, drifting toward one of the most heavily traveled bridges in Baltimore.

On land, officers with the Maryland Transportation Authority moved swiftly into action. “I need one of you guys on the South side, one of you guys on the North side, hold all traffic on the Key Bridge,” someone is heard saying on the audio recording of emergency radio traffic that night. “There’s a ship approaching that just lost their steering. So until they get that under control, we’ve got to stop all traffic.”

Vehicles were held on either side of the bridge as the ship continued its inexorable drift toward the 1.6-mile-long span.

A minute later, the officers turned their attention to several workers, some of them immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, who were still laboring on the bridge in the chilly darkness, taking advantage of the light traffic at night to fix potholes.

“There’s a crew up there,” one officer is heard saying on the audio recording of the radio exchange between officers. “You might want to notify whoever the foreman is, see if we could get them off the bridge temporarily.”

But even then, the ship was striking the bridge. Almost at once, the pier buckled and collapsed, twisting over the ship, with its cargo containers stacked high on the deck. Then the rest of the bridge went, breaking into sections as it plummeted and splashed into the dark river waters below.

“The size and weight of these ships make them really difficult, even with propulsion, to stop them,” said Stash Pelkowski, a professor at State University of New York Maritime College and a retired Coast Guard rear admiral. With no power, he said, “There was very little the pilot or the crew on the Dali could do.”

The collapse had happened in seconds. Except for the stumps of the piers, the central span of the bridge had plunged into the frigid river — where divers would spend the whole day searching amid twisted metal for survivors — by 1:29 a.m.

“Dispatch, the whole bridge just fell down!” an officer called out. “Whoever, everybody, the whole bridge just collapsed.”

Stray ships had long been seen as a risk to the Key Bridge. Just a few years after the Baltimore structure was constructed in 1977, a vessel crash knocked down the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Fla., killing 35 people.

Officials acknowledged that the Key Bridge would not be able to withstand that kind of direct hit from a heavy cargo vessel. “I would have to say if that ship hit the Bay Bridge or the Key Bridge — I’m talking about the main supports, a direct hit — it would knock it down,” John Snyder, the director of engineering for the state Toll Facilities Administration told the Baltimore Sun at the time.

But building a bridge that could withstand such an impact was simply not economically feasible, he said. When the bridge was built, cargo ships were not the size they are today. A much smaller freighter did hit the bridge in 1980 , but the bridge stood strong.

Minutes after the bridge collapsed on Tuesday, both tugboats that had accompanied the Dali arrived on scene, followed soon by the Coast Guard and the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Two of the workers who had been on the bridge were rescued from the water. The others could not be found.

Jack Murphy, who owns Brawner Builders, the company whose workers had been on the bridge, got a phone call about the collapse and raced to the area, about a 30-minute drive away. He stayed by the bridge all night, and eventually began making calls to the men’s families.

Two workers’ bodies were discovered in a red pickup truck found near the bridge debris, police said Wednesday. They were identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, an immigrant from Mexico, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, a native of Guatemala.

About two miles from the bridge, Andrew Middleton had been lying awake when he heard the crash. He first thought it was thunder, maybe a low-flying jet.

It was only when he awoke a few hours later that he saw the news of the collapsed bridge. “I thought to myself, I was just with those guys yesterday,” he said.

Mr. Middleton, who runs Apostleship of the Sea, a program that ministers to sailors coming through the port, had driven the ship’s captain and a few crew members to Walmart on Monday to stock up on goods for the 28-day voyage ahead — toothpaste, snacks, clothes, Bluetooth speakers.

He recalled the captain telling him their next port was Sri Lanka, but that they were taking a longer route, down around South Africa, in order to avoid recent Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea.

Mr. Middleton immediately messaged the crew on WhatsApp after hearing the news on Tuesday, he said, and “they responded within a few minutes saying that everyone was OK,” he said.

Around the site of the bridge collapse, firefighters and rescuers in diving gear were swarming around the shore, followed by news crews. John McAvoy, who owns a nearby restaurant, had driven over with hot meals — chicken, crab balls and pretzel bites — to hand out to the crews.

But by nightfall on Tuesday, officials had called off the rescue efforts and said they would switch to searching for bodies. “The water’s deep, visibility’s low, it’s cold as I-don’t-know-what,” said Kevin Cartwright, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

The signs of all that had changed were only starting to become clear on Wednesday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it was mobilizing more than 1,100 specialists to clear the wreckage of the bridge and unblock the Port of Baltimore’s shipping lane. In the meantime, Mr. Buttigieg, the secretary of transportation, said the East Coast would have to rely more heavily on ports outside Baltimore.

Mr. McAvoy said the tragedy would ripple over the port for years.

Fishing crews always have found their way home following the Key Bridge, he said. “It’s going to change a lot of things for a lot of people.”
