2024 Teacher Appreciation Week Celebration Ideas

When is it and what to plan?

A pile of handwritten thank you notes for US teacher appreciation week

We’re firm believers that teachers deserve appreciation all year long. And we’ll take it in the form of higher salaries and stronger laws to make schools safer for everyone . But we’re fans of the official Teacher Appreciation Day and U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week too. Here’s more about Teacher Appreciation Week and ideas for celebrating it.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

U.s. teacher appreciation week runs from may 6 to may 10, 2024, and teacher appreciation day is may 7, 2024..

Since 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week always takes place the first full week of May. Teacher Appreciation Day, on the other hand, takes place on the first Tuesday in May in the United States. (World Teachers Day takes place each year in October— here’s more about that holiday .)

Many businesses offer teacher discounts and deals during Teacher Appreciation Week to celebrate and honor teachers. Find the Best Teacher Appreciation Discounts and Deals here.

Eleanor Roosevelt was actually the first to convince Congress that we needed a dedicated time to thank teachers for their hard work in the 1950s. The first lady had an excellent understanding of what it really means to be a teacher.

“The teachers are, of course, among the most important people in our nation,” she wrote in 1953 . “Day in and day out they are at work preparing the future citizens of the U.S. … I have always felt that we did not give an honorable enough place in our communities to the teachers. Next to parents they are the most important people in our communities.”

Roosevelt continued: “It is quite impossible to give teachers monetary compensation alone that will repay for their devotion to the job and the love that must go to each and every child. But I think we could compensate a little more adequately the teachers in our communities if we were conscious of their importance.”

The 81st Congress declared a National Teacher Day for 1953 at Roosevelt’s urging. The holiday didn’t catch on right away, though. In 1980, Congress declared March 7 National Teacher Day, but it was only for that year. It wasn’t until 1985 that the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week in the first full week of May, with Teacher Appreciation Day held on Tuesday of that week.

What do teachers really want for Teacher Appreciation Week?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: What teachers really want is to be valued, paid fairly, and supported in their jobs. They want a safe teaching environment and reasonable class sizes, with quality resources to serve every student’s needs. Teachers want equipment that works; texts that are up-to-date, relevant, and diverse; and plentiful classroom supplies that they don’t have to pay for out of their own pockets.

Most of all, teachers want respect. They want to be recognized for the professional, hardworking, dedicated, responsible, and educated workers they are. Teachers want the trust and freedom to make decisions about what they teach and how they teach it, because they are trained experts in their fields. They want administrators who support their decisions and provide the professional development they need to stay on top of their game.

Many of these are things that come automatically in other professions. But for some reason, teachers constantly have to beg for supplies, better pay, support, respect, and recognition. The best way you can really help teachers is to use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for what they really want and need, in and out of the classroom.

Use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for fair compensation, smaller class sizes, quality educational resources, and the respect and trust educators have earned.

20 U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week Ideas for 2024

That being said, teachers also want to be recognized for all their hard work, and this week is the perfect time to do it! By the end of a long school year, teachers have given their all every single day. So take this week to show them some love. These teacher appreciation ideas are a great way to start.

1. Collect thank-you notes

A pile of handwritten thank you notes for US teacher appreciation week

Meaningful teacher thank-you notes are always appreciated, as these examples can attest . Send a request home to students and families requesting they fill out a form or write a letter to help show appreciation for their teacher. Supply prompts or questions to make things a little easier, such as:

  • Why do you like your teacher?
  • What’s something cool your teacher taught you this year?
  • What makes your teacher special?
  • Share a special story about your teacher.

Don’t forget to give a deadline for returning the letters, and make it easy for families to respond any way that works best (collection box in the office, email, snail mail, etc.).

2. Record thank-you videos

Set up a Flip page for your school (or one for each teacher) and invite students and families to record a quick thank-you video. This way, others can see and celebrate your educators too.

3. Cover daily duties

Ask parents, administrators, and school board members to volunteer their time to cover recess or lunch duty, so teachers can get a much-needed break. Parent volunteers can also handle tasks like making copies, assembling supplies for a project, or organizing classroom bookshelves.

4. Pass out coupons for the future

Give teachers some flexibility by providing them with coupons they can trade for help in the future. (Be sure you’re not tasking other teachers with covering for them, though. Instead, arrange for administrators or parents to step in as needed.) Some possible ideas:

  • Cover a duty (lunch, drop-off/pickup, etc.)
  • Early leave/late arrival
  • Lend a hand (Be a second pair of hands and eyes in the classroom.)

5. Create collaborative art

One principal says she takes over art class for one week and works with students to create a big art piece specifically for their teacher. It’s a cooperative and visual way to say thanks for all that they do. See our favorite collaborative art projects here.

6. Decorate their doors

Classroom door decorated with a campfire and marshmallows. Text reads "We need s'more teachers like you."

Loudly and proudly celebrate your teachers by decorating their doors. This costs very little. You just need some time and parent volunteers to pull it off. One principal turns his teachers into superheroes, complete with large face cutouts and capes!

7. Write messages in sidewalk chalk

This is a fun and easy way to welcome teachers to their day. Invite families to create the art the night before (check the weather for rain) or to come in early before school.

8. Let baristas make your teachers coffee

Set up your own hallway Starbucks, making delicious caffeine-filled treats for your teachers. This one will take some help from amazing volunteers, but if you pull it off, teachers will be talking about it for a long time.

9. Create collaborative bouquets

One principal asked each student to bring in a single flower, then created bouquets. This is a really sweet and inexpensive way to let families contribute, especially in areas where everyone has their own backyard garden.

10. Wash teachers’ cars

We heard from one principal who said they coordinate with their coaches and athletic department to set up a car-washing station during Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s free for all teachers, and it gets students involved too. So creative!

11. Buy them lunch

This is a standard Teacher Appreciation event, but one that’s always appreciated. Let teachers vote to choose a place, and place their orders in advance so every teacher gets what they want. (If possible, offer several places that teachers can pick from when they order.) Then, make sure their lunchtime is actually long enough (and stress-free enough!) to enjoy their meal.

12. Host a cookout

Teachers eating lunch outdoors at colorful tables for Teacher Appreciation Week

Invite parent or community volunteers to throw a cookout during lunch. Set up tables and chairs outside, with food available all through teacher lunch hours. They can swing by when their lunch break arrives, grab some BBQ, and relax with their coworkers in the sun!

13. Bring in a food truck or ice cream truck

This one will be oh-so popular, but it might take a little more cash. Cut costs by asking food trucks to donate or give you a discount. (You never know.) If that’s not possible, have an open call for donations from school families or select members of the community.

14. Offer room service

Put a note on teachers’ doors offering them room service. List treats like coffee, water, chocolate, fruit, etc. Ask them to select one or two items and then hang their request on their door by a certain time. Collect the notes, then stop by and leave the teachers’ requested items before the end of the day. This gives administrators a chance to get face time with each and every educator too!

15. Rent an ice cream machine for the week

You can give your teachers ice cream all Teacher Appreciation Week long through the magic of a rental. Set it up so your teachers can have ice cream anytime they want. (You can also rent a popcorn machine, snow cone machine, etc.) So sweet!

16. Offer massages with a mini spa

Want to help teachers relax? A massage might be the ticket! If you’re on a budget, ask the local massage schools if they have students who’d be willing to volunteer. You can also send an email to parents asking if anyone is a massage therapist. Have a sign-up sheet for teachers to get massages, then set everything up in an empty classroom that has soft music, aromatherapy, and other treats.

17. Ask local businesses to offer freebies or discounts

Visit local stores and restaurants to see if they’d be willing to give your teachers a discount or free item during Teacher Appreciation Week. They can provide items to give teachers at school, or invite teachers to stop by in person to get their discount or freebie.

18. Roll out the red carpet

Giant Hollywood-themed balloon arch with a paper

Ask a local company if they’ll donate a red carpet rental, or just make one yourself out of paper. Then, give each teacher a star on the walk of fame, and line the carpet with students and administrators to cheer them on!

19. Give them a gift

Teachers always appreciate a thoughtful gift, although frankly, they already have enough mugs, water bottles, and candles. Instead, take a look at these teacher gift ideas , with options in every price range.

20. Even better, give them a gift card

This is the number-one teacher gift educators ask for, since it allows them to choose what they really want. See their top gift card picks here. Tip: Pair them with one of these free printable teacher thank-you cards .

17 Teacher Appreciation Week Ideas

In our calendar, May holds a special place for those who’ve dedicated their lives to the noble profession of teaching. Teacher Appreciation Week, marked during the first full week of May, is a testament to the significance of educators in our lives. Can we even begin to fathom the world without these pillars of wisdom and knowledge? It’s hard to quantify our appreciation for teachers. Their steadfast dedication to nurturing young minds and shaping our children’s education is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Unfortunately, in the hustle and bustle of life, it’s all too easy to sideline the importance of teachers. We might sometimes forget to acknowledge their day-in-day-out efforts. But Teacher Appreciation Week shines a spotlight on these educators, drawing attention to their invaluable role. It’s a week dedicated to acknowledging and thanking them for being the lighthouses that guide our children towards promising futures.

Teachers eagerly anticipate Teacher Appreciation Week as a heartwarming time when their dedication and hard work are celebrated and cherished:

It’s essential to note that expressing appreciation doesn’t require grand gestures or lavish gifts. Whether you’re working with a limited budget or merely looking for meaningful ways to show gratitude, there’s always a way. The age-old adage, “it’s the thought that counts”, remains as relevant as ever. A hand-written note, a sincere compliment, or just a heartfelt “thank you” carries immense weight.

To further assist those looking for inspiration, we have put together a list comprising 17 innovative and touching methods to shower teachers with the appreciation they rightfully deserve this coming May.

1. Pen a Gratitude Note

Difficulty Level: Low

Cost: Low ($1 to $5)

Materials: Paper, pen, and envelope

Pen a Gratitude Note

The power and potency of gratitude isn’t merely a philosophical idea; it’s a reality backed by scientific evidence showcasing its vast health benefits. Think of the warmth one feels upon receiving a heartfelt “thank you” note. Such simple gestures can elevate moods, fortify relationships, and even boost one’s overall well-being.

While succinct messages have their charm, delving deeper into the sentiment and being intentional in expressing it can resonate more profoundly. Instead of a generic expression of thanks, pinpoint specific instances. Did a teacher guide you through a challenging project, or perhaps spark an interest in a subject you’d previously overlooked? By referencing these personal moments, your gratitude takes on a more intimate and genuine tone.

Memories shared between you and your teacher, be they of laughter, discovery, or growth, serve as the foundation of a bond that lasts a lifetime. Highlighting such moments can rekindle the emotions of those times.

4 Tips for Writing a Gratitude Note

  • Be Sincere : Authenticity is key. Write from the heart and avoid overly formal or stilted language unless it’s natural for your relationship with the teacher.
  • Detail Specific Moments : Reflect on specific lessons, projects, or conversations that had an impact on you. Describe how these moments made you feel and how they influenced your academic journey or personal growth.
  • Keep It Handwritten : In a digital age, a handwritten note carries significant value. It shows effort and personal touch.
  • Prioritize Presentation : To further enhance the expression of your gratitude, consider the presentation. You can enhance the aesthetic appeal by folding your note into a creative origami shape.

Here’s a simple guide to crafting an origami thank-you note:

2. Heartfelt Notes from Home

Materials: Letters or notes from students’ families

Heartfelt Notes from Home

In our digital world, the sentimental value of handwritten letters stands strong. Administrators and faculty can deeply convey appreciation through such tangible gestures of gratitude.

Imagine launching a campaign urging parents to express their gratitude in writing to the educators shaping their children’s lives. Send a prompt through a newsletter or email, requesting letters or short notes of appreciation. This act captures unique stories and memorable moments, all thanks to dedicated educators.

As Teacher Appreciation Week approaches, the collected letters can be distributed as cherished gifts. The physical touch, aroma of paper, and individual nuances like handwriting or doodles make them truly special.

Receiving such heartfelt appreciation, staff will be reminded of their significant influence. These letters are not just thank-you notes but keepsakes to be cherished, reigniting the feelings they hold, even years later.

4 Tips for Writing an Appreciation Letter

  • Narrate Your Child’s Journey : Describe how you’ve seen your child grow, evolve, or overcome challenges during the academic year, and attribute these transformations to the teacher’s influence.
  • Share Specific Moments : Highlight particular instances where the teacher went above and beyond, or when they showcased patience, understanding, or special attention to your child.
  • Involve Your Child : If you or your child is artistically inclined, consider adding a simple drawing, a decorative border, or even just colorful highlights to make the letter stand out.
  • Include Personal Touches : Crafting a unique envelope can make your letter even more special. Crafting a unique envelope can make it even more special!

Here’s a simple and adorable envelope idea to get you started:

3. Present a Nurturing Plant

Cost: Low to Middle ($5 to $20+)

Materials: Succulent plant, pot or container, and optional soil or decorative elements

During Teacher Appreciation Week, gifts with symbolic meaning often resonate the most. A plant represents the nurturing and dedication educators invest in their students.

Just as plants thrive with care, students flourish under a teacher’s guidance and support. Gifting a plant, like a sturdy succulent or graceful fern, with a note saying, “Thank you for nurturing my child’s mind, like this plant needs care to bloom,” creates a lasting impression.

Such a gift not only acknowledges their significant impact but also adds beauty to their space. As the plant grows, it symbolizes the enduring influence of a teacher’s commitment.

You can also cultivate the plant on your own. Explore our article for insights on plant growth.

4 Tips for Gifting A Plant

  • Opt for Low Maintenance Plants : Consider plants like succulents, ZZ plants, or snake plants that require minimal care. This way, the teacher can enjoy the beauty without the added stress of intensive maintenance.
  • Think About the Size : A compact plant that can fit comfortably on a desk or windowsill in a classroom might be more practical than a large plant.
  • Pair with a Thoughtful Note : Consider adding a plant marker with a thoughtful message, like “Thanks for helping me grow!”
  • Add a Personalized Touch : Craft your own planter box to house the plant.

This year, let a plant and a sincere note express your deep gratitude for these remarkable educators. Here’s how to do it:

4. Delight with a Treat-filled Box

Cost: Low to Middle ( $10 to $30+)

Materials: Treats or snacks, boxes or containers, and optional wrapping

Delight with a Treat-filled Box

In the world of education, a small gesture of appreciation makes a big impact. Show gratitude with a curated box filled with treats for our dedicated teachers. Imagine their joy upon discovering gourmet chocolates, soothing artisanal teas, and more. Beyond edibles, include keepsakes like bookmarks, quote cards, or a personal thank-you note.

Collaborating with students or parents adds variety and represents a collective expression of appreciation. The presentation matters too; a well-decorated box, personalized with the teacher’s name or a message, enhances the gift’s warmth. Remember, a heartfelt box of treats beautifully conveys gratitude to the educators shaping our future.

3 Tips for Curating the Perfect Appreciation Box

  • Know Their Preferences : Try to find out discreetly if the teacher has any food allergies, dietary restrictions, or particular likes and dislikes. This ensures every item in the box is something they’ll enjoy.
  • Variety is Key : Aim for a balanced mix of sweet, savory, and non-food items. This caters to different moods and moments.
  • Personalize the Box : Beyond filling it, personalize the exterior. Painting, stickers, or even just the teacher’s name can make it feel tailor-made for them.

Here’s also a step-by-step guide on assembling a gift box, perfect for filling with your chosen treats:

5. Blossom Appreciation with Flowers

Cost: Low to Middle ($5 to $30+)

Materials: Flowers or potted plants and a vase or pot

Blossom Appreciation with Flowers

Flowers, with their delicate petals and enchanting aromas, are timeless symbols of gratitude. As you seek ways to appreciate your staff, consider the charm of flowers, whether from upscale florists or the school’s garden.

The joy of handpicked flowers shines when offered with genuine appreciation. Their spontaneity is a nod to nature’s beauty, especially during the spring-rich Teacher Appreciation Week, which offers a plethora of blooming choices.

For a creative twist, a paper bouquet is an endearing option. They last longer and can be tailored to the recipient’s taste. Incorporate colors, designs, or even small thank-you notes within the petals for added sentiment. Whether using fresh flowers or handcrafted ones, both encapsulate deep gratitude towards our educators.

3 Tips for Delivering the Perfect Floral Gesture

  • Know the Preferences : Beforehand, determine if the teacher has any flower allergies or particular favorites. This ensures the bouquet is both safe and personalized.
  • Preservation Tips : If gifting real flowers, offer tips on how to keep them fresh longer or provide a small vase with water.

Bookmarks are not just placeholders for avid readers but can also serve as tokens of appreciation, carrying within them the essence of gratitude and admiration. Crafting a personalized bookmark for your teacher can be a delightful endeavor, merging both artistry and sentiment.

Choose sturdy construction paper for durability and embrace vibrant markers for design. Incorporate patterns or symbols that echo your teacher’s influence or shared moments. Add a hint of glitter for sparkle, but avoid overdoing it. The centerpiece? Your heartfelt message or a significant quote.

Such bookmarks find their rightful place during chapter book read-alouds, ensuring every time they turn a page, they’re reminded of the special bond they share with their students. More than just a tool, this bookmark becomes a symbol of enduring respect and gratitude.

3 Tips for Crafting Personalized Bookmarks

  • Material Choice: Start with sturdy construction paper or cardstock. It offers durability and a smooth surface for your artistic expressions.

7. Contribute to Classroom Resources

Difficulty Level: Low to Middle

Cost: Low to Middle ($20 to $100+)

Materials: Classroom supplies such as pencils, markers, notebooks, and storage containers

Contribute to Classroom Resources

It might come as a surprise, but teachers in America often reach deep into their own pockets, spending an average of $500 annually on essential classroom supplies. To put this staggering number into broader context, collectively, American teachers shell out a whopping $1.6 billion each year on materials that aren’t covered by school budgets. This isn’t just about the obvious instructional tools like pencils, markers, and notebooks, but also encompasses care items like tissues, hand sanitizers, and cleaning products – items essential for both learning and wellbeing.

Whether you’re a parent, a guardian, or simply a compassionate community member, supporting our educators and, by extension, their students, can be an act of profound impact. How can you help? Start by reviewing a teacher’s Amazon wishlist, which often details the classroom supplies they urgently need. If that’s not available, a simple conversation can provide insights into what materials would be most beneficial for their class.

Contribute to Classroom Resources

3 Tips for Supporting Teachers with Essential Supplies

  • Review Wishlists: Check if the teacher has an Amazon wishlist or any other registry that lists needed classroom supplies. These lists provide direct insights into their current requirements.
  • Engage in Conversation: If there’s no wishlist, simply asking the teacher about their needs can provide clarity. They’ll appreciate your initiative and interest in helping.
  • Think Basic: It’s not always about the flashy items. Essential classroom staples like pencils, notebooks, and tissues are always in demand.

Never underestimate the power of small contributions. Even seemingly minute gestures, like donating a box of crayons, some stationery, or providing snacks like granola bars, can make a world of difference. By bridging these gaps, we can collectively ensure that teachers can focus on what they do best: shaping the future of our children.

8. Offer a Thoughtful Gift Card

Cost: Middle to High ($10 to $100+)

Materials: Gift card and a small card or envelope

Offer a Thoughtful Gift Card

While Pinterest is a treasure trove brimming with crafty ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week, there’s undeniable charm in the simplicity and utility of a gift card. It grants teachers the autonomy to indulge in something they truly desire or need.

Coffee shop gift cards, reminiscent of the age-old tradition of gifting apples to teachers, are well-intentioned, but have now become commonplace. They’re a convenient choice in a time crunch, yet, if your schedule permits, crafting a more personalized gesture can be truly touching.

To make your gift resonate, consider engaging in a touch of playful sleuthing. Assign your children the delightful task of subtly finding out their teacher’s favorite hobbies, leisure activities, or preferred shopping outlets. Armed with this knowledge, you can either lean towards universally useful gift cards like those for grocery stores, bookshops, or gas stations. On the other hand, you can hone in on something tailored to the teacher’s individual tastes, hobbies, or pressing needs, making the gesture all the more special.

3 Tips for the Gift Card Appreciation Idea

  • Diversify Your Choices: While coffee shop cards are convenient, consider alternatives that may hold more personal value for the teacher.
  • Engage the Kids: Make it fun for your children by turning the information gathering process into a secret mission. They can discreetly inquire about their teacher’s preferences.
  • Presentation Matters: If opting for a physical gift card, ensure its presentation is special. A well-decorated holder can make a significant difference.

Teachers often use lanyards in the classroom for holding keys, ID cards, or other essentials. But a personalized beaded lanyard? That’s a step above the rest! Infusing personal touches into this everyday item can transform it into a cherished accessory. Made with an array of vibrant beads of various shapes and hues, these lanyards become beautiful representations of thoughtfulness.

To add an extra layer of sentiment, you can customize the lanyard with the teacher’s name or even a meaningful message. Every time the teacher reaches for their keys or ID, they’ll be reminded of the love and appreciation that went into crafting this special gift. Moreover, the versatility of the craft means you can tailor the design to reflect the teacher’s personal style or favorite colors.

Such handmade gifts stand out not just for their aesthetic appeal, but also for the time, effort, and thought poured into them. This Teacher Appreciation Week, let’s celebrate our educators with gifts that are both functional and filled with sentiment, like a beautifully beaded lanyard.

3 Tips for Crafting a Beaded Lanyard

Create a Personalized Keychain

Expressing gratitude doesn’t always require grand gestures; sometimes, the tiniest tokens speak the loudest. As Teacher Appreciation Week approaches, crafting a custom keychain emerges as an idea that strikes the balance between personal sentiment and practicality.

Keychains, though small, are an integral part of our daily routines, accompanying us as we journey through our days. ‍Beautify Teachers' Doorways

As Teacher Appreciation Week dawns, what better way to show educators just how valued they are than with a festive display right at the entrance of their sanctuary: the classroom door? It’s a delightful, visual gesture that screams, “We see you, and we appreciate all that you do!”

Dive into the spirit of celebration by decking out their doors in a riot of themes, vibrant colors, and symbols close to their heart. Whether it’s an array of sunny sunflowers for the biology teacher who adores plants or a galaxy-themed spectacle for the astronomy enthusiast, personal touches can make it all the more special. The key? Ensuring everything is tidied up by week’s end so that our dedicated educators aren’t left with an after-party mess.

For an even deeper touch of sentimentality, embark on a covert mission. Rally students and fellow parents to pen down reasons they cherish their teachers. These heartfelt notes, whether they applaud patience, dedication, or a unique teaching style, can be incorporated into the door decor. Each note becomes a testament to the immeasurable impact educators have on their students. • Engage Parents : Rally fellow parents for added manpower and creative ideas. Collaborative efforts often result in richer, more diverse decorations.

Cookies have a way of warming the heart, especially when they’re baked with love and gratitude. Not only does it fill their tummies with deliciousness, but it also fills their hearts with joy and acknowledgment.

Homemade cookies, with their rich flavors and comforting aroma, provide an olfactory trip down memory lane. They bring to mind the warm, carefree days of childhood, reinforcing the teacher’s role in molding young minds. 13. Design an Appreciation Display Poster

Materials: Poster board, art supplies, and decorations

Design an Appreciation Display Poster

Celebrating the educators who shape our lives requires a mix of creativity, warmth, and genuine gratitude. One of the most expressive ways to convey this appreciation is through the time-honored tradition of crafting a teacher appreciation poster. A poster, with its vast canvas, allows for a delightful interplay of colors, designs, and words. Starting with a vibrant background, choose shades that evoke positivity and joy. Whether you’re inclined towards soothing pastels or more dynamic hues, ensure the color palette reflects your teacher’s personality or the ambiance of the classroom.

Infuse the poster with fun illustrations – perhaps doodles of classroom memories, caricatures of your teacher in action, or even symbols that represent their favorite subjects. These visuals serve as windows into the myriad moments of learning, laughter, and light they bring to the classroom daily. Complementing the visuals, sprinkle the canvas with positive quotes. Choose words that resonate with the spirit of teaching, the transformative power of education, or even inside jokes that only your class would understand.

However, what would truly elevate your poster from being merely decorative to deeply moving would be heartfelt messages. Pen down genuine sentiments that articulate your gratitude, admiration, and respect for all the hard work and dedication your teacher pours into every lesson. Books are gateways to new worlds, offering endless knowledge and sparking imagination. As Teacher Appreciation Week approaches, one profoundly impactful way to express gratitude to educators is by enriching their classroom libraries. Donating books, be it classics or contemporary gems, can be a lasting gift that benefits not just the teacher but countless students in the years to come.

For educators, a well-stocked classroom library is more than just a collection of books. It’s a reservoir of resources they tap into to inspire, educate, and engage their students. By contributing to this collection, you’re not merely gifting a book but fostering a love for reading among many.

To make your donation even more personal, consider adding a dedication on the inside cover. A few heartfelt words, expressing thanks or sharing the significance of the chosen book, can transform it from just another addition on the shelf to a cherished keepsake. 3 Tips for Donating Books to Classroom Libraries

Teacher Appreciation Week offers a prime opportunity to creatively thank educators. Choosing a theme for the week or for individual days can guide events, decorations, and gifts. For example, a ‘Motivational Monday’ might focus on the inspiring aspects of teaching, while ‘Time Travel Tuesday’ celebrates teachers across eras.

If you prefer a consistent theme throughout the week, consider ‘Garden of Gratitude’, with classrooms decorated in flowers symbolizing the nurturing nature of educators. Alternatively, ‘Heroes of the Heart’ can spotlight teachers as unsung heroes, with tokens like badges or capes. With countless theme options from ‘Navigators of Knowledge’ to ‘Builders of the Future’, the goal is to highlight the invaluable roles teachers play and ensure they feel cherished during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Set the Theme for Appreciation Week

3 Tips for Selecting and Implementing a Theme for Teacher Appreciation Week

  • Brainstorm with Others: Collaborate with fellow parents, students, and school staff. Multiple perspectives can lead to more diverse and inclusive themes.
  • Budget-Friendly: While it’s tempting to go all out, remember that it’s the thought that counts. Opt for themes that can be executed well within a reasonable budget.
  • Inclusivity: Ensure the theme is inclusive and resonates with all educators, regardless of the subjects they teach or roles they hold.

16. Serenade with Gratitude

Cost: Low (less than $1)

Materials: Musical instruments or recording equipment

Serenade with Gratitude

Music has always been a poignant way to convey emotions. During Teacher Appreciation Week, serenading educators with a special song can be deeply touching. “In Your Hands” is an ideal choice for such an occasion. While it’s a lively and memorable track, its true power lies in its message, reflecting the deep gratitude students feel for their teachers.

The song doesn’t just focus on academic teachings; it underscores the influential role teachers have in shaping students’ futures. Imagine the heartfelt reaction of a teacher as students sing this song in unison. This gesture, rich in sentiment, reaches beyond traditional gifts, touching the hearts of those who have devoted their lives to teaching.

4 Tips for Serenading Teachers with “In Your Hands”

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Begin preparations well in advance. If students are performing, organize rehearsals to ensure they’re familiar with the lyrics and the melody.
  • Involve Multiple Classes: The more the merrier! Consider collaborating with different classes or grade levels to create a larger chorus and amplify the impact.
  • Record the Moment: Capture the performance on video. It will serve as a cherished memento for the teacher and can be shared with others who couldn’t be present.
  • Engage Remote Students: If some students are learning remotely, include them by streaming the performance or having them send in video clips singing parts of the song.

So, for this Teacher Appreciation Week, consider uniting voices in gratitude, celebrating the unsung heroes of our classrooms with the resonating chords of “In Your Hands”. Here’s how to do it:

17. Curate a Theme-inspired Gift Basket

Curate a Theme-inspired Gift Basket

Themed gift baskets offer more than just items; they present a curated experience. Designed around individual interests, these baskets show a deep understanding and appreciation of a teacher’s passions.

Their versatility is evident: if your teacher loves cooking, consider a basket filled with gourmet spices, unique utensils, and a treasured family recipe. A gardening enthusiast might appreciate a mix of exotic seeds, efficient gardening tools, and an insightful book on botany. For those enchanted by literature, a book-themed basket can be a delight. Picture a basket loaded with hand-selected classic novels, elegant bookmarks, a snug blanket for cool reading nights, and an innovative book light. This gesture isn’t just for the English teacher but also for any educator with a love for literature.

3 Tips for Crafting Themed Gift Baskets

Teacher Appreciation Week – All You Need to Know

Photo of author

There is no shortage of reasons to have a celebration in today’s world; we have National Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17th and National Short Girl Appreciation Day on December 21st.

Literally every day is designated as some sort of holiday , and on the Tuesday of the first full week in May, teachers get their turn. Teacher Appreciation Day is a day to thank teachers for the selfless work they do all year long.

When is Teacher Appreciation Day?

Teacher Appreciation Day is actually one day that is a part of Teacher Appreciation week. The dates vary every year, but it is always in the beginning of May.

In 2024, Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10, and Teacher Appreciation Day is May 7th.

Every year, Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week in May, and thus, Teacher Appreciation Day is the Tuesday of the first full week in May.

Why Teachers Deserve Teacher Appreciation Week

Have you ever driven past a school at 6 AM on a Monday morning or at 2 PM on a Sunday afternoon? If you have, chances are you’ve seen teacher’s cars in the parking lot.

Any time I go to work in my classroom during non-school hours (which is very often), I’m more likely to see other teachers than not. If they’re not at the school, they’re probably grading or planning from home well into the night and over the weekend. Many people don’t realize the amount of time and heart teachers put into their careers. It’s a fulfilling and rewarding, yet often thankless and tiring job.

The financial toll takes a lot on teachers as well. A recent study by the National Center of Education Statistics found that 94% of teachers spend their own money on their classroom. Paying out-of-pocket for necessary supplies is something people in most traditional occupations would never be asked nor expected to do. In fact, many modern workplace perks that are beginning to become standard in most industries aren’t even possible in the field of education.

In many states, a teacher’s salary starts at or below $30,000/year. This is lower than the average salary of those with only a high school diploma. This low salary alone is enough to make teachers feel like they aren’t appreciated and respected.

Teachers are really good at hiding all the work they do behind the scenes. From a student’s perspective, everything is magically organized and ready to go at the beginning of the day. Classrooms are decorated. Name tags are laminated and carefully placed. Crafts are prepared. Supplies are organized. Class pets are fed and taken care of. Seating charts are strategically arranged. Lessons are planned. Handouts are copied. Tests are created and modified for students with special needs. Essays are graded. Teachers are smiling and ready to tackle the day.

Most teachers do all of this and more without complaint or desire for recognition, and often while being criticized by members of society. Teachers build up the foundation of society. In every walk of life, every single successful person is where they are today thanks, in part, to their teachers.

Doctors, lawyers, police officers, retail workers, engineers, welders—none of them would be where they are if a teacher didn’t first teach them how to read, how to resolve conflict, or how to think critically. If you’re reading this, thank a teacher . The least we can do is devote a week to teachers and their efforts.

How to Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week

So what can we do to celebrate teachers? Whether you work directly with teachers or have long been out of school, there are simple things you can do to show a teacher you care.

What Administrators Can Do

You know all the hard work your teachers put in; your schools wouldn’t run without them. Let your teachers know that you see them. Especially when you have an exceptional staff that always steps up to get the job done, it can be easy to take your teachers for granted. Thank them for coming in early, staying late, offering extra tutoring, volunteering as a club adviser, and everything else they do.

Here are some ideas of things you can do for your teachers during teacher appreciation week:

  • Cater lunch for them.
  • Stop in their classrooms in the middle of the day with a special treat.
  • Create a theme for the week and do something special for teachers each day that fits in with the theme.
  • Roll out the red carpet and have students carry teachers’ bags and escort them into the building and to their classrooms in the morning.
  • Call a “faculty meeting” after school where there is no actual meeting, but there are treats for teachers to enjoy.
  • Provide breakfast and coffee.
  • The logistics of this could be tricky depending on your staffing. An easy way to make this work is to split your teachers up, so they only attend half of the assembly. You could also ask for parent volunteers to come in and help supervise students.
  • Stock the faculty lounge with snacks and drinks.
  • Bring in a massage therapist and let teachers really catch a break during their planning period.
  • Have students write reasons they appreciate their teachers on small slips of paper. Distribute the papers to teachers or post them on a bulletin board.
  • Create a team of students to help plan teacher appreciation activities. This will make it easier for you, and more meaningful to teachers and students.
  • Hand out door prizes to teachers as they walk into school in the morning.
  • Give each student a carnation, with the instructions to then give the carnation to a teacher that has helped them or made an impact on their life.
  • Take over lunch or recess duty to give teachers a break.
  • Enlist the help of students and parents to decorate teachers’ doors after school.
  • Write a brief, individualized thank you note to each teacher.
  • Have students get on the morning and afternoon announcements to give shout outs and thanks to teachers.
  • Ask for help from the community. You would probably be surprised at how many businesses in your community would be willing to donate gift cards, gift baskets, or products for teachers.
  • Compile a list of which businesses are offering deals and discounts to teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week, and distribute the list to teachers.

What Teachers Can Do

Hopefully everyone around you is showing you the love. Take this time to reflect on all you do and remember to give yourself a break. Do some research to find out where you can get some deals or freebies just for being a teacher. Chipotle, for example, is one of the businesses that is known for celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day, offering a free burrito to teachers.

This is also a good time to thank and appreciate the teachers around you—your neighbor who watches your class while you run to the bathroom, or your teacher bestie who is always ready to vent with you when you need it most. You need that support to stay sane and get you through the day, so don’t forget to say thanks.

Maybe you take this opportunity to give yourself a little break. Tell your students it’s going to be a few days until you grade their assignments. You’ll see: they’ll live, and the world will keep turning. They might even learn a life lesson in patience.

What the Community Can Do

Community members can also play a part in thanking teachers during teacher appreciation week. Following are some easy ideas.

  • If you own a business, show the teachers in your community some love by offering discounts or freebies for teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. You could also donate supplies or deliver small gifts to teachers at your local schools. Brick and mortar businesses can hang a sign in their window thanking teachers.
  • Stop in your local schools and ask if there is anything that teachers need donated, or if there is any way you can volunteer your time.
  • Write a thank you to the teachers in your community for taking on the responsibility of educating and playing an integral part in raising the children in your community.

What Students and Parents Can Do

In addition to the ideas listed below, students and parents can work with the administration to facilitate activities or gifts for teachers. See some of the ideas above in the “What Administrators Can Do” section.

The very best thing you can do is to let the teachers know how much you appreciate everything they do. Your thanks doesn’t have to be elaborate; you could literally just take a minute of your day to say “thank you” to a teacher. If you want to get more creative than that, check out the Teacher Appreciation Week gift guide below.

Teacher Appreciation Week Gift Guide

For most teachers, the gift itself doesn’t matter. Teaching can be a thankless profession, and a lot of teachers are just happy to be appreciated. Continue reading to find some gift ideas.

Thank You Notes

Don’t undervalue the impact of this gift. A lot of teachers keep old thank you letters and cards on their desks for those really tough days. They pull the letters out to remind themselves why they became a teacher on those days when they’re questioning the profession.

Even if you’re out of school, look up that teacher who really made an impact on you and let them know. I promise they haven’t forgotten you, and they’ll really appreciate it.

Social Media Post

Whether you’re connected with the teacher on social media or not, this is a good way to publicly show the teacher you care and to encourage others to appreciate teachers as well. Create a post with a story about a positive thing the teacher did or start a thread asking others to post the name of a teacher who made a difference in their life.

This can come in many forms, but will be much appreciated. Find out what the teacher’s caffeine of choice is: soda, tea, coffee, etc. The gift could be a gift card, some k-cups, or a 6 pack of soda. You could even surprise the teacher with a hot cup of coffee in the morning.

Every teacher I know has a stash of candy or snacks somewhere, or if they don’t, they have a friend who does. It’s an essential component in any classroom when the day has not gone according to plan at all and the teacher just needs a little something. Prepackaged snacks that a teacher can quickly grab for a little pick me up are a great idea.

You can give a teacher a very meaningful gift by spending no or very little money, but if you want to spend a little bit, a thoughtful gift card is a great option. Pick somewhere you know the teacher likes to go, or somewhere he/she can buy teaching supplies since many teachers spend their own money on their classrooms. Whether you choose somewhere practical or somewhere that will allow the teacher to pamper him/herself, you can’t go wrong.

Classroom Decorations

This one can be tricky because you really need to make sure you know the teacher’s style. If you buy or make them something they don’t like, they’ll feel obligated to display it anyway, and then it just might annoy them more than anything. If you know the teacher well though and have a knack for their style, a nice decoration can be a comforting and welcoming touch to their classroom.

Cleaning Products and Air Fresheners

Although a bit different, this is a great gift for teachers. Classrooms get messy and germy, and teachers rely on disinfectant wipes and other cleaning products regularly. If you notice the teacher already has an air freshener or wax melter, they would probably love some refills of fresh scents. Better yet, offer to stay after school and dust/tidy up the classroom.

Classroom Supplies

Take a good look around the room and take note of what the teacher might be needing. Are all of their dry erase markers running dry? Do students have to go the bathroom to blow their nose because there are no tissues? Could they use some fresh, updated books for their classroom library? These types of gifts are so helpful for teachers because getting them something they need helps to lower their stress and make their day easier. It also shows them that you truly see them and put thought into getting them something they need.

Classroom Help

This idea works best for elementary school teachers, but when parents come in to help teachers out, it makes a huge difference. Volunteer to read a story to the class so the teacher can catch up on grading, or come help out with the next class party. Ask the teacher what would be most helpful (if they’re too polite and tell you nothing, don’t take that for an answer!). Every teacher has too much to do and not enough time to do it.

The Bottom Line

Teachers put their heart and soul (and wallet) into their work, but it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive to show them that you appreciate what they do. While there are many ways to get creative and have fun with Teacher Appreciation Week, you don’t have to plan something really elaborate or go all out to show teachers your appreciation.

17 Ideas To Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (2024)

Colorful illustrated teacher happily teaching students

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated during the first full week of May — in 2024, it’s celebrated from Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10. This annual week-long celebration is an opportunity to show teachers they are valued, appreciated, and deserving of more support.

Parents, students, administrators, and community members alike often use Teacher Appreciation Week as an opportunity to celebrate and honor educators who have made an impact on the lives of students, but it’s also a great occasion to improve the lives of teachers, too.

Ahead of Teacher Appreciation Week, we spoke with Sheryl Lee Ralph at TED Conference in Vancouver — that’s right, the Broadway legend who plays Ms. Barbara Howard on the hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary.” (She’s just as delightful in person, we promise.)

Ralph spoke in her 2023 TED Talk about the power of believing in oneself, but we were curious: How can we let our teachers know we believe in them, too?

After all, surveys from the National Education Association indicate that over 55% of teachers plan to leave the profession sooner than they planned . While teacher shortages have dire consequences for our children, and the future of our communities, improving teacher well-being is at the heart of the issue.

"Show up and give support to your teachers ... How is it that every day we can give teachers our greatest natural resource — our children's brains — and not think they deserve more of everything?" ‍ — Sheryl Lee Ralph (Ms. Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary)

“Show up and give support to your teachers,” Ralph told Good Good Good in an interview. “Please, respect the teachers. Pay them the money that they deserve. How is it that every day we can give teachers our greatest natural resource — our children’s brains — and not think they deserve more of everything?”

Take it from Ms. Howard herself; Teacher appreciation is important — vital, even — but it’s the first step in building a world where educators are supported, cherished, and funded wholeheartedly.

While it’s important to uplift teachers every single day, it’s helpful to have somewhere to start. We’ve created a guide on how to meaningfully celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week this year.

Read good news about teachers and education.

Part of the fun of celebrating teachers also means celebrating good news about teachers — and education as a whole.

We’re all about good news at Good Good Good — and we’ve even created an Education Edition of our Goodnewspaper !

Here are a few education-focused good news stories to get you started:

  • A Washington school district worked to help homeless students graduate at the same rate as their peers
  • Hank Green created a project that helps you get college credit when you watch educational YouTube videos
  • These states have started buying local for school lunches — and want others to follow suit
  • This organization in Baltimore teaches STEM while riding dirt bikes

Plus, we have a whole library of good news stories about education to inspire you, too.

2. Give a Gift

Write a thank you note..

The power of gratitude is tried and true; there are even health benefits that demonstrate how much a simple thank-you note can impact us!

While a short and sweet message can carry a big amount of significance, it’s still important to be thoughtful and intentional. (Feel free to take inspiration from our teacher affirmations article.)

Give specific examples of how a teacher has made a difference in your life, connect over a shared memory — or hey, even break out the fancy eco-friendly stationery for the special occasion.

Give your teachers a gift card.

While Pinterest is indeed full of fun, cute crafts for Teacher Appreciation Week, sometimes the most impactful gift you can give is a gift card — so teachers can spend money how they’d like.

Coffee shop gift cards are always great, but they’ve kind of become the modern-day apple; kind, but not always unique. If you’re short on time, it still shows you care, but if you’re able, try thinking outside of the box!

Really consider what would make the teacher in question feel seen and appreciated. (You can even send your kids on a super-secret mission to ask their teacher about their favorite interests or stores!)

Consider something universal and helpful, like a gift card to a grocery or department store, or even a gas station — or get specific and target a teacher’s hobbies , interests, or needs (if I were a teacher, I’d probably want a Chewy gift card to feed my obsession of buying things for my dog, for example).

Explore Teacher Appreciation Week gift ideas.

Like we said, shopping for gifts teachers actually want is the key to a meaningful present (that means no more coffee mugs). Plus, we’re pretty positive most parents don’t have hours to spend creating an elaborate craft out of No. 2 pencils.

So, here are a few gift ideas that tap into a teacher’s real wants and needs, all while helping busy parents along the way:

Simple Individual Gifts:

  • Gift cards to local cafes, restaurants, or lunch spots
  • Gift cards to major retailers like Target or Amazon
  • Items from your teacher’s Amazon wish list
  • Little treats! (Examples: A 12-pack of their favorite soda, snacks, a made-with-love pastry, or — you didn’t hear it from us — a bottle of wine)
  • A pack of every teacher’s favorite pens
  • High-quality self-care items (Examples: Moisturizers, face masks, cozy socks , or anything else that can help them relax at the end of the day)

Bigger Individual Gifts:

  • Personalized keepsakes (Examples: Photo books, customized lanyards, a name plaque, or a big tote bag)
  • A flower bouquet, delivered with a note of gratitude
  • Gift cards for experiences, like a movie night or spa day
  • Volunteer hours!

Simple Group Gifts:

  • Gift cards for a larger amount of money
  • Framed photo or photo album of the whole class
  • A charcuterie board to graze on
  • A donation to a cause or charity close to your teacher’s heart

Bigger Group Gifts:

  • A fancy new desk chair
  • Classroom items, like a new bookshelf, reading nook furniture, or decor items

Bonus idea: If you’re involved in the school community or part of the PTA, consider making a directory or spreadsheet with gift ideas or favorites for each teacher in the school. Digital forms make this super easy and can help you find personalized gifts for next year!

Donate classroom supplies.

Did you know that teachers in America spend an average of $500 a year on classroom supplies with their own money? If that number sounds overwhelming, we’ll give you some extra perspective: In total, American teachers spend $1.6 billion on materials that schools do not budget for each year.

These can include additional instructional supplies like pencils, markers, or notebooks — or care items like tissues, hand sanitizer, or cleaning products.

If you’re a parent, or just a community member who cares about teachers (and their students!), consider donating classroom supplies. Check out a teacher’s Amazon wish list , or just ask what they could use more of.

Something as small as a box of crayons or some granola bars can truly make a huge difference.

Consider past teachers.

If you have the means, consider continuing to support the teachers who made a difference in your or your kids’ lives in the past with a small token of appreciation. We’re sure they’ll feel extra special that you thought of them again this year.

Consider other educators.

There are so many amazing individuals who contribute to a school community.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, make sure you include secretaries, paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, elective teachers, music teachers, coaches, administrators, counselors, janitors, or cafeteria teams who have made an impact.

3. Take Action

Donate to nonprofits that support teachers. .

Beyond our own classroom experiences, teachers around the country — and around the globe — need our support to continue providing safe, meaningful, and inclusive educational experiences to students of all backgrounds.

Here are a few organizations dedicated to teachers and education that could use a little love:

  • Teach For America
  • Donors Choose
  • Fund For Teachers
  • AdoptAClassroom
  • Teach For All
  • Teaching For Change
  • National Prism Alliances
  • National Environmental Education Foundation
  • Educators Without Borders
  • Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation
  • Malala Fund
  • College Promise

Advocate for policies that support teachers.

Across the country, teachers face policies that slash school budgets , attack diverse curricula , and discriminate against teachers and students in marginalized communities . Not to mention, of course, the sobering reality that teachers are on the front lines of gun violence in schools .

Along with all the other regular stressors teachers face, putting educators at the helm of these issues keeps them from doing what they do best: Teaching their students.

Along with the very obvious need to advocate for policies that financially support teachers , it’s also important to advocate against policies that make their jobs even harder — or potentially put them and their students in harm’s way.

Whether it’s showing up to school board meetings, calling your elected officials , or testifying before your state legislature, teachers need your help to make schools a better and safer place.

Show your support for teachers by volunteering or joining the PTA.

The best gift you can give a teacher? Taking some work off their plate. If you’re a parent or community member with some time on your hands, see if you can volunteer regularly to support your teachers.

From making copies or hanging bulletin boards, to helping lead small groups or facilitate spelling tests, your work shows teachers (and your own kiddos!) that you care.

You can also consider joining parent groups like a PTA or PTO to help coordinate more teacher appreciation initiatives, activities, or fundraisers.

Make your teachers’ lives easier.

Even if you don’t have a lot of time to give to a special group like the PTA, or even if you’re a student or administrator, there are so many little acts of kindness you can do to make a teacher’s life easier.

If you’re an administrator, you could consider turning a meeting into an email (if possible), allowing a jeans-free-for-all dress code during the week, or even host an open forum for teachers to discuss their needs and wants, and see what you can do.

Students can contribute by cleaning up the classroom, coming in before or after school to arrange activities for the day, or just be on their extra best behavior.

Think about the best days you’ve had in a classroom; what made it the best? How can you do your part to help your teachers do their very best jobs?

4. Celebrate

If you work at a school as an administrator or another role — or you’re a parent who can request to come into school outside of normal hours — consider the ways you can do your part to celebrate teachers:

Decorate classroom doors.

At the start of Teacher Appreciation Week, throw your teachers a mini individual “we appreciate you!” party by decorating their classroom doors. Go all out with the themes, colors, and symbols they love most — but just be sure to clean up by the end of the week, so they don’t have to.

Better yet? Go undercover and ask students (or other parents) to write some reasons they love and appreciate their teachers and use them as decorations, too.

Create a Teacher Appreciation Week theme.

Whether you plan a special theme for each day of Teacher Appreciation Week, or go all-out with a theme for the whole week, this can be a fun way to plan events, brainstorm decorations, give special gifts, or execute small surprises throughout the week.

A few ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week themes include:

  • You’re A Star (think: celestial, space, or Hollywood)
  • Major League Appreciation (think: sports)
  • Teachers Are Real Heroes (think: superheroes)
  • You Deserve Some R&R (think: self-care or spa-related activities)
  • We Couldn’t Have Picked A Better Teacher (think: flowers, apples, picnics)

5. Post on Social Media

Follow teachers on social media..

The power of social media is not to be underestimated. With such a recent, quick pivot to digital learning opportunities, social media has become a space for teachers to share meaningful insights to their work, lives, and classrooms.

Find a diverse bunch of teachers to follow on social media, and let yourself learn a little more every day — even if you haven’t done algebra in decades.

→ Check out our guide to some of the best (and most entertaining) teachers to follow on TikTok

Post about the power of teachers.

After you’ve shared your hand-written thank you note or catered a yummy meal for your teachers, it’s helpful to remember that a public act of appreciation also goes a long way.

Do you have a story of a teacher who made an impact on your life many moons ago? (We’re sure you do.)

Do you have an anecdote about a time your child’s teacher saved the day? (We’re sure you do.)

Do you have a gallery of first-day-of-school memories that are that much more special when you think of the teacher at the front of the classroom? (We’re sure you do.)

Take Teacher Appreciation Week as an opportunity to share those stories, thank a teacher who paved the way for your future, and honor those who continue to uplift and encourage our young people every day.

How to Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week

Gift cards and heartfelt notes are treasured gifts, many teachers say.

Teachers are known to use their own money to fund supplies for their students, classroom donations are always happily accepted during Teacher Appreciation Week, educators say.

Teachers often play an outsized role in the lives of the children they teach. They support, inspire, motivate and bring learning to life, and their paychecks rarely reflect just how much time and energy they put into their work. Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance for students, parents and administrators to show their thanks.

“Students and families celebrate teachers for the week of Teacher Appreciation by making cards, bringing treats and celebrating their educators in many other ways,” says Sara Murtaza, a virtual teaching instructor for K-5 students at the education company Carnegie Learning, who has taught in both public and private schools in California.

Here’s some background on the occasion and advice on how to celebrate.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated the first full week in May. This year it is May 7-12.

"Parents will give gifts, students will write letters and the administration will buy us a special lunch. Typically, our school's parent teacher organization also does something extra special," says Hannah Wilde, a high school teacher at a private school and education blogger in Ohio.

Teachers are not only shown appreciation inside school but outside, too. Local businesses often offer deals and discounts to teachers that week.

What Are Its Origins?

Teachers can credit former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for laying the groundwork for what would ultimately become Teacher Appreciation Week. In 1953, Roosevelt urged Congress to create a day to recognize educators.

But it didn’t become a national day until March 7, 1980, after the joint lobbying efforts of the National Education Association and some state boards. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week.

How Do Schools and Parents Observe It?

Many schools hold a week of special events to honor their teaching staff. Teachers can usually expect special breakfasts or luncheons organized by administrators and parents.

"Each year Teacher Appreciation is hosted by the parent teacher association. They come up with some kind of a fun theme that is spread throughout five days," says Christine Weis, a longtime elementary school teacher in Wilmington, Delaware.

This year, she says, the week is themed around baseball, including a "tailgate party" lunch and a "7th Inning Stretch" with coffee, tea and treats.

Parents, through the PTA or PTO, are typically the ones organizing such events. "This year, they are bringing in a flower cart so we can all make our own bouquet to take home, they are buying us lunch from a local restaurant and they have a massage chair coming in for us to use during our planning period," says Wilde.

Josh DeSantis, associate professor of education at York College of Pennsylvania, says when he was an eighth grade social studies teacher for Susquenita School District in Pennsylvania, he used to receive notes of encouragement along with small treats in his teacher mailbox. But it was the special lunches that were most appreciated.

“Cheesy potato casserole, crockpot meatballs and brownies were a welcome respite from the chicken tenders and pizza from the cafeteria I ate most of the year,” says DeSantis.

He says there are   many ways for parents to thank teachers during the week.

“One of the most impactful is through your school's PTO. I recommend reaching out to explore how you can be involved,” says DeSantis. “I also recommend nominating excellent teachers for local, state or national teacher awards.”

What to Give Your Child's Teacher

When it comes to individual gifts, teachers say a simple handmade card or note from your child telling them how much they made an impact will be greatly cherished.

"Teachers appreciate any thoughtful gift. The most appreciated gifts are handwritten cards. I have kept many over the years," says Weis.

DeSantis agrees and says many teachers “keep a rainy day file with notes like that to give them a lift when times get tough.”

Donna Whittaker, vice president of curriculum and education at early childhood provider Big Blue Marble Academy in Auburn, Alabama, says many schools and child-care centers have teachers fill out questionnaires about some of their favorite things so parents can provide gifts that will be appreciated and enjoyed by their child's teacher.

However, there are some gifts many teachers say they don’t like. Coffee mugs, tumblers, apples, lotion and generally any item that has a cheesy teacher pun on it are not the most sought-after, educators say.

"Although all gifts are appreciated, what not to gift teachers are candles, mugs, homemade treats and food and bath and body products," says Weis. Many teachers receive those year after year.

But parents and students aren’t the only ones sometimes getting it wrong. The teacher blog Teacher Misery documents real “ Worst Gifts from Administration ,” which include items like toenail clippers, a sheet of bubble wrap for “stress relief” and a snow globe with pictures of administrators’ faces floating around.

Gift cards are the real winner. Whittaker says since teachers often have limited space or funds, gift cards to shops and restaurants “make nice gifts as they are able to use the cards on what they truly want or need.” Gift cards to Target and Amazon are popular, as are Visa gifts cards.

And, since teachers are known to use their own money to fund supplies for their students, classroom donations are always happily accepted too during Teacher Appreciation Week, educators say.

“The best gifts come from the heart,” Murtaza says.

Even though teachers are surrounded by their students each day, they often lose sight of how important they truly are. Following are twenty teacher appreciation ideas that you can use and modify to help honor the teachers in your life.

Provide Breakfast for All the Teachers In the School

Having a nice breakfast waiting for the teachers in the morning can be quite a welcoming way to start Teacher Appreciation Week. This is quite an easy idea to arrange as a selection of donuts, danishes, and coffee are more than enough.

Give Each Teacher a Gift Card Paid for By Donations or By the PTSA

One year, our school gave out a $10 gift card to Amazon.com to all the teachers. It was enough to buy a paperback and was well appreciated.

Have Students Write a Letter to Their Favorite Teacher

One way to incorporate teacher appreciation within the classroom is to have students write a letter to their favorite teacher. Then you can arrange for this to be delivered either within the school or by post to a teacher at another school.

Have Students Write a Poem About Their Favorite Teacher

One Language Arts teacher at our school had students write a poem for their favorite teacher. This was given a grade, just like any other poetry assignment. The poem was then delivered to the teacher.

Donate to a Charity on Behalf of the Teachers

This idea works especially well in certain circumstances. For example, if a teacher recently suffered through breast cancer, then donating a sizable sum to the American Cancer Society in the name of all the teachers of the school would be a wonderful way to honor them. Alternatively, the teachers could vote concerning which charity they'd like the donation to go to.

Cater a Lunch

Having a lunch catered with non-cafeteria food can be quite a treat. One year, Outback Steakhouse donated an entire lunch for the school personnel. Even something less fancy can still be quite memorable for the teachers.

Have a Massage School Provide Chair Massages All Week

Massage schools are quite willing to charge cut rates in order to give their students practice. The massage students can set up in the teacher work area throughout the week. Then the teachers can sign up and get a chair massage during their planning periods and lunch.

Create a Free Raffle for the Teachers to Participate In

Have businesses and parents donate prizes and then give out free tickets to the teachers so that they have a chance to win a nice prize.

Create an Individual Award for Each Teacher

This works best if the administration is involved and personalizes a reward for each teacher. However, even if it is not personalized, teachers can be given a certificate and a small recognition gift at an assembly before the school.

Have All the Teachers' Cars Washed During the School Day

This is another well-appreciated gesture. Have a local company or just a group of students wash all the teachers' cars during the school day.

Allow a Casual Dress Day or Week

If the administration agrees, teachers always enjoy the chance to dress in casual clothes for one or more days during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Have Food Treats Available Throughout the Day

You can set up a central location like the teacher workroom and have treats like donuts, cakes, cookies, and other treats available all day long so that students can come during their planning periods.

Place a Note and Candy In Each Teacher's Mailbox

You can place a special note of appreciation along with some candy in each of the teacher's mailboxes so that they find it first thing in the morning.

Give a Bouquet of Flowers to Each Teacher.

Having fresh flowers delivered to each classroom can be quite a lovely gesture. These can include a special poem or note of appreciation.

Provide Recognition Awards Based on Nominations.

School personnel and students can nominate teachers for special recognition awards to be given out during an assembly in honor of the teachers.

Give Each Teacher a Motivational Book

Buy and distribute motivational or inspirational book for each of the teachers. This can be especially nice if there is a special inscription for each teacher.

Have Students Perform a Talent Show In Honor of the Teachers

You can organize the students to have a talent show for the teachers at an assembly during the school day.

Make a Starbucks Run

Have the teacher order their choice of coffee or tea from Starbucks to be delivered at lunchtime. This can take some coordination, and it works best with a smaller faculty.

Have the Administration or Staff Cover One Class for Each Teacher

If the administration and support staff is willing, then each teacher can have a class covered for one period in order to give them a little extra planning or personal time.

Give an Engraved Item to Each Teacher

You can go order an engraved item through a company like Things Remembered or just a local trophy shop. This can be a paperweight or a picture frame that has been etched to commemorate Teacher Appreciation Week.

Teacher Appreciation Week

I was in charge of Teacher Appreciation Week at my kids’ school this year.  I had a budget of $900 for approximately 80 teachers and staff. It was a fun, exhausting, politically incorrect week.

I went with the theme “Best Teachers in the World!”

teacher appreciation week assignment

With the help of the PTA, room moms, and the students, we took the teachers to a different country each day.

Here is an outline of what we did for the week in case any of you are crazy enough to have this assignment in the future:

First, I decorated the faculty lounge with a big world made out of cardboard, butcher paper and mod podge.  I cut out letters “Best Teachers in the World” to go around the outside of the world.  I also had a balloon/flag banner that added a lot to the room but was inexpensive and very simple to do.

teacher appreciation week assignment

I put centerpieces on the tables.  I changed out the countries flags each day and added a little bit to the serving table depending on the country. Click here to download the “Best Teacher in the World” circles.

Another PTA member decorated the doors to the faculty lounge.

Monday- MEXICO

PTA: Mexican Munchie Bar . We had different parents bring in a variety of chips, dips, salsas, munchies, etc. at lunch.  This giant sombrero turned out to be a really fun way to serve chips.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Students: Color Fiesta .  The kids wore their teachers’ favorite colors that day.

Tuesday- ITALY

PTA: Italian Soda Bar.   We had an Italian Soda Bar set up at lunch for the teachers complete with straws, pebble ice, ginger ale, half and half, Italian soda flavorings, and a bartender . The teachers loved this.  You could tell they were a bunch that didn’t mix a drink too often.  It was fun to see their eyes light up on the prospect of adding a shot of cream.

Students:  “That’s Amore!”  Notes .  With the help of room moms the kids wrote their teachers love notes. This was very individual and up to each room mom to determine how she wanted to do this.

Wednesday-FRANCE

PTA:  Stuffed French Toast Breakfast. We had Kneaders cater breakfast with  their yummy french toast.  They gave me a great deal and were wonderful to work with.  To save money and insure accurate numbers I had the teachers RSVP for this breakfast.  A few moms brought in fruit plates, milk and o.j. to stretch the budget. I had a little french flag sticking out of the french toast.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Kids:  Eiffel Tower of School Supplies.   The children were encouraged to bring school supplies for their teachers.  The students stacked the supplies in their rooms.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Thursday- CHINA

PTA: Giant Fortune Cookies .  My friend made all of these giant fortune cookies herself and she dipped them in chocolate and sprinkles.  She put a generic fortune inside each one that said “It is our good fortune to have you as our teacher.”

teacher appreciation week assignment

Kids:  Fortunes. With the help of the room moms, the kids all wrote fortunes for their teachers. When possible, we nested the giant fortune cookie in the kids’ fortunes and delivered them in a Chinese take-out box.   To know my friend is to know she had to do a cute flower and ribbon to complete the package.  She may never talk to me again, but she went above and beyond.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Friday- TROPICAL ISLANDS

PTA: Luau .  The PTA provided a nice lunch for the teachers on the last day. We had the meat, rice and dessert catered from a local Hawaiian restaurant, Bamboo Hut.  We had about 10 different moms bring in all kinds of salads and fruit plates.  We also served Hawaiian punch.  We tried to make the faculty room as tropical as we could.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Kids: Fruit Basket.   The kids brought in something  “fruity” for their teachers to go into a collective “fruit” basket.  It could be an actual piece of fruit, candy, lotion, bubble bath, etc.  The moms got a little creative here.  I sent in homemade strawberry jam.

The PTA supplied the basket and the tag which said “Enjoy the Fruit of your Labors”.  The room moms had also collected money so many of the fruit baskets also contained a gift card of some sort.

teacher appreciation week assignment

INTERACTIVE MAP

We had the teachers fill out passports that another PTA member made.  The passports had the teachers pictures and 4 questions:

Where were you born?

What languages do you speak?

Where have you been?

Where do you want to go?

Then we put a map up of the world and the U.S. on a wall in the hallway with the teacher’s passports taped all around them.  It was fun to come in each day and see students gathered around the wall reading about their teachers.

teacher appreciation week assignment

Overall, the teachers were spoiled and I got a lot of positive feedback from them.  One of my favorite notes said, “In all my 12 years of teaching, I have never seen a more organized, creative, fun Teacher Appreciation week.  Each day I couldn’t wait to see what you were going to pull out of your hats.  Thank you.”

I’ll take that.

If you want to do this at your school, let me know if you have any questions. (And I am already planning next year’s Teacher Appreciation Week.  Hehe.)

Wow that looks like a ton of work!! You did an amazing job, such a cute idea!! 🙂

WOW! what a beautiful thing you did for the teachers. I just happended upon your blog … I’ll be back from time to time, with summer upon us and the little ones out of school soon I’m thinking your words here will encourage me – not to mention spark some great ideas for fun learning along the way.

' src=

I found you on Pinterest. What a great idea! Thanks for sharing! I am helping with Staff Appreciation week this year and am in charge next year and really have no idea what I’m doing. 🙂 I’m so grateful for people who are willing to freely share their ideas! Too bad we don’t have Kneaders or Bamboo Hut in Missouri, but I’m sure we can adapt.

' src=

Do you happen top have the template for the passports? This is such a great idea and I am doing it next week for our teacher appreciation week!

' src=

Meredith, I am sorry. I don’t have a template. Another mom did those for me and I didn’t think to save one. I do remember we asked questions about places like where were you born?, where have you lived?, where do you want to travel?, etc.

Celebrate This Teacher Appreciation Week with Video

teacher appreciation week assignment

We appreciate teachers every single day. Our mission is to provide the tools they need to position every single student for success every day.

And while it doesn’t have to be Teacher Appreciation Week to show them love, it is a nice way to celebrate a job well done as they inch closer to a well-deserved break. However, you might be struggling to find a unique way to show your appreciation for a teacher — or maybe even an administrator, coach, or a student!

To help, we’ve put together a guide that any Screencastify user can use to quickly create, edit and share a video that shows just how much you appreciate someone during this Teacher Appreciation Week. You can also click here to use and share this visual template!  👈

Before You Start

Choose a teacher to appreciate 👏.

The first thing you’ll want to do is select the teacher that you want to celebrate, of course! You’ll also want to think of a few things that you wanted to give a shout out to from the past school year or longer. Here are some examples:

  • How long have they been teaching
  • Share a favorite memory
  • List a word or two that describes them

Decide what to show on your screen 💻

Next, you’ll want to decide what to show on your screen. Maybe you have photos of the teacher or a video that had special meaning or made an large impact. Or maybe it’s an assignment or feedback that you received that resonated.

In any case, you can share whatever you would like on your screen and talk about why it was special to you. You can

  • Record your screen and a voiceover
  • Record the video with your webcam embedded
  • Choose the webcam only if you’d like to record only yourself

Record and edit: Create the perfect video!

Getting set up 🎙.

Once you’ve decided how you want to celebrate this Teacher Appreciation Week, the next step is to prepare your physical environment.

Here is an article that shares some of our best tips for creating an amazing screencast , as well some of our favorite reasons to use video!

Celebrate with drawing tools ✍️

When you’re recording your awesome video, be sure to toggle on the drawing tools that can be used to — you guessed it — draw on your video! You can also add:

  • Stickers ⭐️
  • Fireworks 🎇

Top it off with edits ✂️

After you’ve recorded your video with a strong message and any cool effects you might want, it’s time to edit your masterpiece and ensure it looks the way you want it. You can cut and trim the video as much as you need, or add text-box shout outs or closed captioning and anything else you want to make the recording perfect.

One of our favorite edit tips from Screencastify CEO James Francis: “If you make a large mistake that you don’t want in your final video, don’t end the recording. Pause for a few seconds and start that segment over. Then cut the mistake out after you’re finished recording.”

Fireworks are great for Teacher Appreciation Week!

Share: Let the world see

Qr codes so the world can watch 👀.

So, you’ve created an amazing video to show your true appreciation for a teacher or anyone! Now what? Of course, you can share the video with the subject of your appreciation, but you can also share them with anyone who wants to watch! One of our favorite ways to do this is through the QR code.

QR codes, of course, are easy to create with Screencastify and can be shared anywhere, giving easy, on-demand access to the video on any device.

As you can see below, you can generate a QR code directly from the Screencastify Watch Page. You can even print the QR code and hang them wherever you would like to share your Teacher Appreciation Week awesomeness!

Show off your video!

Have you created a Teacher Appreciation Week video that you’d like to show off? Share it with us on Twitter @Screencastify . And if you haven’t yet started your journey with video in the classroom, install Screencastify now and you’ll be creating your first video in seconds!

Teacher Appreciation Letter

Teachers are absolutely awesome. They’re the ones who help us learn and grow into smart, capable adults. They work super hard to make sure students understand all the stuff they’re teaching them, and they’re always there to lend a helping hand when students need it.

Sometimes, we forget just how much teachers do. They put in tons of extra time and effort, grading papers and staying late to help with clubs and extra curricular activities. And let’s not forget that they often have to put up with a lot of attitude and sass from students!

They definitely don’t get paid enough.

That’s why it’s so important to say thank you to teachers. They deserve to know how much we appreciate them and all their hard work. When we thank our teachers, it shows them that we’re grateful for everything they do and that we value the time and effort they put into teaching.

So, let’s make sure to give our teachers a big thank you!

Teacher Appreciation Week takes place the first full week of May. While a great teacher gift or gift card is always a must you can go the extra mile and make it a more thoughtful gift by adding a note of thanks. This personal touch goes a long way in letting your favorite teacher know just how amazing they are.

Teachers deserve our thanks for all they do. Learn how to write the best teacher appreciation letter that they cherish for years to come! | We Three Shanes

What is a Teacher Appreciation Letter?

A teacher appreciation letter is a letter written to express gratitude and thanks to a teacher for their hard work and dedication. It is a heartfelt message that acknowledges the teacher’s positive influence and contributions to the student’s academic and personal growth.

Teacher appreciation letters can be written by students or parents. They can be given as a gift, sent via email, or delivered in person. While teacher appreciation week or the end of the year are probably the most popular times to give one of these letters, they can be given anytime.

Just imagine how much of an impact a letter would have if a teacher received one after a noticeably tough time in the class room one school day. This is something older students can look out for.

And don’t forget other staff members who work for the school community, like lunch monitors, teacher’s assistants, custodians, nurses, and front of school staff. The school can’t run without them so consider writing them a note of appreciation as well.

In general, teacher appreciation letters should be sincere, genuine, and thoughtful. They should focus on the positive impact that the teacher has had on the student and should be written in an appreciative tone. A well-written teacher appreciation letter can be a powerful way to show gratitude and acknowledge the important role that teachers play in shaping kids lives.

Ideas to Include in a Teacher Appreciation Letter

A letter to a teacher is pretty simple to write if you just put a little thought into it. But if you’re a little stumped on what to write then here are some ideas you can include in a teacher appreciation letter:

  • Begin the letter with a sincere message expressing your appreciation and gratitude towards your teacher. You can start by addressing them by name and thanking them for their hard work and dedication.
  • Share specific things a teacher has done to make a difference in your life. Think about the past year and how the teacher has helped you grow and develop, both academically and personally. You can talk about the first day of school, a specific lesson, activity, or project that the teacher led that had a lasting impact on you.
  • If the letter is coming from a parent, think about the ways your child has grown this year whether it be a new skill or social behavior and highlight how the teacher had an impact on that progress.
  • Highlight the teacher’s strengths, skills, and qualities that have inspired and motivated you. You can talk about how the teacher’s enthusiasm, creativity, or dedication to their work has made a difference in your life.
  • Talk about how the teacher has gone above and beyond to support and encourage you. You can mention instances where the teacher provided extra help or guidance, maybe during a difficult time, or went out of their way to make sure you felt included and valued.
  • Conclude the letter with thanks and good wishes, and reiterate how much you appreciate the teacher’s hard work and dedication. You can also express your hopes that the teacher continues to inspire and motivate others in the future.

Remember that the most important thing is to be sincere and genuine in your message. A well-written and thoughtful teacher appreciation letter can be a powerful way to show gratitude and recognize the important role that teachers play in our lives.

Examples of a Letter of Appreciation for Teachers

Here are a couple of examples of what a teacher appreciation letter could look like:

Dear Ms. Johnson,

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for all that you do. Your passion for teaching and commitment to your students is truly inspiring, and I feel so fortunate to have had you as my teacher this year.

From the first day of class, I knew that I was in good hands. You created a warm and welcoming environment that made me feel comfortable and supported. Your enthusiasm and creativity were infectious, and your ability to explain difficult concepts in a clear and concise way was truly impressive.

I am so grateful for the many ways that you have supported me this year. Whether it was staying after school to help me with a particularly challenging assignment, or taking the time to provide thoughtful feedback on my work, you always went above and beyond to help me succeed.

I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from you this year. You have inspired and motivated me to do my best, and I will always remember the lessons that you have taught me.

Thank you again for everything that you do. Your hard work and dedication are appreciated more than you know, and I am grateful to have had you as my teacher.

(Your name)

Here’s an example of a teacher appreciation letter from a younger kid:

Dear Mrs. Brown,

I am writing this letter to say thank you for being the best teacher ever! I really love coming to school every day because I know that you will be there to teach me new things.

I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all the things you do for me. You are always so kind and patient, and you always make sure that I understand everything that we are learning. I really like the way you explain things and make learning fun.

I also like all the extra things you do to make us feel special. I love it when you put stickers on my work or give me a high-five when I get an answer right. It makes me feel really proud of myself!

Thank you for being such a great teacher and for always making me feel like I can do anything. I am really excited to keep learning from you.

(Child’s name)

The following sample is a letter from a parent:

Dear (Teacher’s Name),

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the work that you do every day to support my child, (Child’s Name), in their education. As a parent, I am grateful for the dedication, passion, and patience that you bring to the classroom each and every day.

Your commitment to teaching has made a significant impact on my child’s academic progress and overall well-being. (An example would be great here. Like: I have noticed them reading more at home and really enjoying books more.) Your efforts in creating a nurturing and positive learning environment have helped my child feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn. Your creativity in delivering lessons and engaging activities have made learning fun and exciting for them.

I also want to thank you for your consistent communication with me, whether it be through emails, phone calls, or notes in my child’s backpack. Your regular updates on their progress, successes, and areas of improvement have helped me stay informed and involved in my child’s learning journey.

Once again, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your hard work and dedication to my child’s education. You are truly making a difference in their life and we are lucky to have you as their teacher.

(Your Name)

Fill in the Blank Letters

Need more help? Here are two fill in the blank style letters. Just copy the words in your own handwriting and fill in the “blanks” with words that describe your teacher.

Here’s an example of a personal letter written from a high school student:

Dear (Teacher’s Name ),

I am writing to express my appreciation and gratitude for all that you have done for me this year. Your dedication and commitment to your students is truly inspiring and has made a big impact on me.

From the first day of class, I knew that I was in good hands. Your (adjective ) teaching style and (adjective) personality make you an amazing teacher, and I feel so lucky to have had you as my teacher this year.

I am grateful for the many ways that you have supported me. Whether it was (example of how teacher helped you) , or (another example of how teacher helped you) , you always went above and beyond to help me succeed.

Your (adjective) approach to education has made a big difference in my life, and I will always remember the lessons that you have taught me. You have inspired and motivated me to (verb) , and I feel confident that I will be successful in the future because of your guidance and support.

Fill in the blank from a younger student:

Dear (Teacher’s Name) ,

I wanted to say thank you for being the best teacher ever! I really like coming to school because I know that you will be there to teach me new things.

You are always so (adjective) and you make learning fun. I really like the way you (list a favorite activity) , and I always have a good time in your class.

Thank you for teaching me so many things this year. I have learned a lot from you and I am excited to keep learning from you.

(child’s name)

You can have your child draw a photo of a favorite thing that happened in class or a photo of their teacher under the note.

Teachers Deserve Our Thanks!

A letter that tells a teacher you are thankful for their efforts is much needed these days. Really, a thank you is all that is necessary but you can always throw in a quick gift to go along with the letter.

A card with your letter written inside, a gift card, flowers or potted plant, a little basket with some of their favorite snacks, a piece of art or hand drawn portrait are some easy gift ideas that teacher’s love.

Say Thank you to your favorite teacher with a letter of appreciation! It's a free and simple way to show teachers you notice all their work. | We Three Shanes

Remember, teachers play a vital role in shaping the minds and futures of young people. They provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed academically, but they also serve as mentors, role models, and sources of support and encouragement.

Teachers are often under-appreciated for the work that they do. They spend countless hours preparing lesson plans, grading assignments, and providing feedback to students. Many frequently go above and beyond to help their students succeed.

Saying thank you to teachers is important because it lets them know their hard work and dedication is valued and appreciated. It can also serve as motivation for them to continue to put forth their best effort, knowing that those efforts are making a difference in the lives of their students.

Expressing gratitude towards teachers can help to foster a positive and respectful relationship between students and educators. It can encourage students to take their studies seriously and to view their teachers as allies in their academic and personal growth.

Overall, teachers are an essential part of our communities and they deserve to be recognized and thanked for the important work that they do. So, make sure your kiddos write some thoughtful words for their teachers in the form of handwritten notes to let them know what a fantastic teacher they are.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Small gestures yield big benefits

.css-26rqae{font-weight:500;} history of teacher appreciation week.

The National Education Association and the Parent Teacher Association established Teacher Appreciation Week in 1984 to recognize and thank teachers for their contributions to students' lives. It is observed during the first full week of May, with National Teacher Day falling on Tuesday of that week.

Does celebrating teachers make a real difference?

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the minds of future generations. They spend countless hours planning lessons, grading assignments, and guiding students to achieve their full potential. But, have you ever wondered about the impact of this appreciation on teachers themselves?

A Dutch study ( Marjuni (2020 ) underscores how appreciation can serve as a potent form of motivation for teachers. The study suggests that when teachers are recognized as agents of change, it fuels an extraordinary level of motivation within them. In a competitive climate, this appreciation drives them further, suggesting that recognition has a significant impact on their performance.

Another study ( Effiyanti et al. (2023 ) aimed to deepen our understanding of the effects of job motivation on elementary school teachers' performance. The study confirms that teacher motivation positively impacts performance. However, it also highlights that appreciation plays a crucial role in sustaining this motivation. When teachers feel appreciated, they are more likely to stay motivated and continue striving for excellence.

Thoughtful ways to show appreciation

Write a thank-you note : Take the time to write a heartfelt note expressing your gratitude for all that the teacher has done for you or your child. You can also encourage your child to create their own thank-you card or message.

Give gifts that keep on giving : Consider giving a practical gift that the teacher can use in the classroom, such as books for their reading corner or art supplies. You can also contribute to a classroom fund or donate to a charity in their name.

Organize a classroom celebration : Get together with other parents and surprise the teacher with a small party or potluck lunch. It's an excellent opportunity for everyone to express their appreciation and share favorite memories.

Volunteer at school : Show support for the teacher by offering your time and skills. You can help out with class activities, organize a field trip, or assist with administrative tasks.

Spread the love on social media : Use social media to share a special message or photo of you or your child with their teacher. Use the hashtag #ThankATeacher to join the conversation and show support for teachers everywhere.

Teacher Appreciation Week 2024: What You Need to Know

04/11/24 | by Kyle Freelander

The winter holiday season is often called the most wonderful time of year. But have you ever celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week as a teacher ?

Teaching, whether in the K-12 or higher ed space, can be a very rewarding experience, and Teacher Appreciation Week is a great time for the broader community to celebrate the teachers that help educate, inspire, and support the next generation.

With Teacher Appreciation Week 2024 just around the corner, we thought we’d take some time to answer some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the week-long celebration and its importance to educators, schools and districts, and — just as notably — student success.

Table of Contents

What is teacher appreciation week  .

Observed annually in the U.S., Teacher Appreciation Week recognizes the invaluable contributions of teachers. It typically occurs during the first full week of May and serves as an opportunity for students, parents, administrators, and communities to express gratitude and appreciation for the hard work, dedication, and passion of educators.

Teacher Appreciation Week is a time to acknowledge the vital role teachers play in shaping the future and reaffirm support for the teaching profession. The dedicated week also provides a platform for various activities, events, and gestures of thanks to celebrate teachers’ impact on students’ lives and society.

Throughout the week, schools, districts, and organizations across the country engage in initiatives to honor teachers — fostering a culture of appreciation and recognition within the education community.

When is Teacher Appreciation Week 2024?

Teacher Appreciation Week in 2024 will be celebrated from May 6 to May 10.

However — just like you hopefully wouldn’t only celebrate your love on Valentine’s Day or your friends and family members on their respective birthdays — celebrating the teachers in your life is something you can (and should!) do year-round.

How long is Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated for five consecutive days — Monday through Friday — or a business week.

Schools are seeking career changers. Discover why you should become a teacher.

Is Teacher Appreciation Week held at the same time each year?

Teacher Appreciation Week typically occurs during the first full week of May each year in the United States. Usually, it’s celebrated Monday through Friday of that week — providing a full business week for celebration. However, the exact dates can vary from year to year, so it is worth checking with the National Education Association to confirm the official dates for upcoming celebrations.

Is Teacher Appreciation Week only celebrated in the United States?

While Teacher Appreciation Week is a widely recognized observance in the United States, similar celebrations honoring educators occur in other countries as well. Different countries may have their own designated days or weeks to honor teachers and recognize their contributions to education.

For example:

  • World Teachers’ Day  is held annually on October 5 and celebrated internationally

  • In Vietnam, Vietnamese Teacher’s Day is celebrated annually on November 20
  • Many other countries also have their own variations of teacher appreciation events or days to honor educators.

While the specific dates and names may vary, the sentiment behind these celebrations remains the same: to express gratitude and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of teachers worldwide.

Why is it important to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week?

It is crucial to recognize and celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week as it provides an opportunity for students, parents, administrators, and communities to express gratitude and appreciation for the tireless dedication and hard work of educators.

Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of students, inspiring a love for learning, and fostering personal and academic growth. Their commitment extends far beyond the classroom, as they serve as mentors, role models, and advocates for their students’ success.

By celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, we honor the profound impact teachers have and reaffirm our commitment to supporting and valuing their contributions to education.

Celebrating teachers also boosts morale, fosters a positive school culture, and strengthens the bonds between educators, students, and the broader community — creating a supportive and empowering environment for teaching and learning.

There are perks to getting a master's in education.

Why is it important for schools and school districts to celebrate Teacher Appreciation week?

Recognizing teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week and throughout the year is a vital opportunity to acknowledge the significant impact educators have on students, schools, and communities.

Teachers dedicate countless hours to nurturing, inspiring, and guiding the next generation of leaders — often going above and beyond their roles to ensure every student receives a quality education. By expressing gratitude and appreciation for their hard work, dedication, and passion, schools and districts not only boost teacher morale and job satisfaction but also reinforce a culture of respect, support, and collaboration within the education community.

Recognizing teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week fosters great pride among educators, motivating and empowering them to continue making a positive difference in the lives of their students.

By celebrating teachers, schools, districts, and communities reaffirm the invaluable role educators play in shaping the future and underscore the importance of investing in their professional growth, well-being, and recognition year-round.

How does Teacher Appreciation Week support student success?

Teacher Appreciation Week plays a crucial role in supporting student success in several ways:

  • Boosts morale : When teachers feel appreciated and valued, it boosts their morale and job satisfaction. Happy and motivated teachers are more likely to go above and beyond to support their students, creating a positive learning environment conducive to success.
  • Fosters positive relationships : Teacher Appreciation Week provides an opportunity for students and teachers to strengthen their relationships. Expressing gratitude and appreciation helps build trust and rapport between teachers and students — leading to better communication and collaboration, which are essential for academic growth.
  • Enhances teacher-student engagement : Feeling appreciated can inspire teachers to increase their engagement with students, both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers who feel valued are more likely to invest time and effort in providing personalized support, feedback, and guidance to help students succeed academically and personally.
  • Promotes supportive school culture : Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week fosters a supportive school culture where everyone feels valued and respected. A positive school culture promotes a sense of belonging and encourages students to actively participate in their learning — leading to higher levels of engagement and achievement.
  • Models gratitude and respect : By recognizing and appreciating teachers’ contributions, schools model the importance of gratitude and respect. Students learn to value the efforts of those who support their learning and understand the impact of showing appreciation for others. This fosters a culture of mutual respect and appreciation among students, teachers, and staff, contributing to a positive and supportive learning environment.

Overall, Teacher Appreciation Week plays a vital role in creating a supportive and nurturing environment where teachers can thrive, leading to improved student outcomes and success. When teachers feel appreciated, valued, and supported, they are better equipped to inspire, motivate, and empower their students to reach their full potential.

WooSox look to find their winning ways, and some sunshine, as team returns to Polar Park

teacher appreciation week assignment

WORCESTER — What’s that round thing in the sky?

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No, it’s the sun. Making its long-awaited emergence in Worcester.

Fresh off a series in Syracuse, the Worcester Red Sox return home — along with the sunshine — for a six-game homestand that begins Tuesday with the Durham Bulls.

Following a hectic first week at Polar Park earlier this month, that included their  home opener , the death of chairman Larry Lucchino and a snowstorm , the WooSox are excited to be back in the Canal District.

With a sense of normalcy — and hopefully some sun rays.

“It’s a great place to play,” WooSox infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard recently said. “If you have to be in Triple-A, this is definitely the place to be.”

Worcester’s second homestand of the season takes place during school vacation week.

Some of the highlights at Polar Park include a Jackie Robinson Day celebration (Tuesday), postgame player autograph session and screening of ‘Bull Durham’ on videoboards (Wednesday), teacher appreciation day and “Throwback Thursdays” with former Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes (Thursday), appearance by Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley, “WooU College Night” and fireworks (Friday), Unibank Women in Sports Day (Saturday) and a kids run the bases promotion following Sunday’s series finale.

'It didn't feel real': A no-hitter and solar eclipse? It was an historic day for high school baseball at Polar Park

The WooSox second homestand features games with unique start times of 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and then usual start times of 4:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday. The games on Tuesday and Friday begin at 6:05 p.m.

“We recognize that April weeknights can be school nights and cool nights,” WooSox president Dr. Charles Steinberg said. “So we are trying to schedule our games when more children can enjoy sunny, springtime baseball. Playing weekday games at 3:05 p.m. also allows Worcester’s thousands of front-line heroes who work the (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) shifts to enjoy some baseball in the sunshine. We want to ensure that everyone can partake (in) WooSox baseball.”

After splitting a doubleheader with the Syracuse Mets on Sunday, the WooSox (5-9) look to move closer to .500 while playing in their home ballpark.

It’s already been a busy season for player movement with the Triple-A club, as the WooSox have sent five players to Boston in two weeks since the season started in David Hamilton (infielder), Romy Gonzalez (infielder), Brennan Bernardino (pitcher), Bobby Dalbec (infielder/outfielder) and Cooper Criswell (pitcher).

Vaughn Grissom, who has been on the Red Sox injured list since March 25 after suffering a left hamstring strain in spring training, began a 20-day injury rehab assignment with the WooSox Friday night and went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter. Grissom, 23, was acquired from Atlanta in December in exchange for pitcher Chris Sale. He has played in 64 career major league games with the Braves (2022-23), batting .287 with five home runs and a .746 OPS while making 41 starts at second base and 19 at shortstop.

“I’m just trying to be the best player I can be for the rest of the team and just trying to learn my role and just play that role and give ourselves the best shot to win,” Grissom told the T&G in January.

Rob Refsnyder, who has been on Boston’s injured list since March 25 after suffering a left pinky toe fracture during spring training, began his 20-day injury rehab assignment with the WooSox last Wednesday and went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter.

On Friday, Refsnyder played right field and went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Refsnyder is in his third season in the Red Sox organization after signing with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in December of 2021.

He spent all of last year with Boston batting .248 in 89 games with a home run and 28 RBI.

“We have a lot of new faces but a lot of old faces, too,” Sogard said a few weeks ago. “It’s a good group, the new guys are all great, and it should be a solid year.”

“For fans coming to the ballpark, on any given day we could have a different lineup,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy said. “We’re very versatile.”
