Gender equality is central to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) – and a perennial item on the Secretary-General's annual priority list.

SDG5 calls for the world to " Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls " by 2030.

Empowering women can boost economies and help the peace process, believes António Guterres, but it needs to happen faster.

"We are promoting women's full and equal participation and leadership in all sectors of society, as a matter of urgency," he told the UN General Assembly, outlining the agency's priorities on 7 February 2024.

It will take another 131 years to reach gender parity , according to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2023.

The continued fight for women’s rights is marked each year by International Women’s Day (IWD).

What is International Women’s Day and when did it start?

IWD takes place on 8 March every year.

It began life as National Women’s Day in the United States back in February 1909. The following year, at the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark, women’s rights activist Clara Zetkin called for an international women’s day to give women a greater voice to further their demands for equal rights.

It was unanimously approved by the female attendees from 17 countries, including Finland’s first three women MPs. International Women’s Day was marked for the first time in March 1911 – and the date was fixed as 8 March in 1913. The UN celebrated it for the first time in 1975 and in 1996 it announced its first annual theme: "Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future".

How is the day marked around the world?

International Women’s Day is celebrated as a national holiday by countries across the globe, with women often given flowers and gifts – and there are IWD events in major cities worldwide .

On 8 March 1914, there was a women’s suffrage march in London, calling for women’s right to vote, at which high-profile campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst was arrested.

In 2001, the internationalwomensday.com platform was launched to reignite attention for the day, celebrate women’s achievements and continue to call for gender parity.

On the centenary in 2011, sitting US President Barack Obama called for March to be known as Women’s History Month. He said: “History shows that when women and girls have access to opportunity , societies are more just, economies are more likely to prosper, and governments are more likely to serve the needs of all their people.”

The World Economic Forum has been measuring gender gaps since 2006 in the annual Global Gender Gap Report .

The Global Gender Gap Report tracks progress towards closing gender gaps on a national level. To turn these insights into concrete action and national progress, we have developed the Gender Parity Accelerator model for public private collaboration.

These accelerators have been convened in twelve countries across three regions. Accelerators are established in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico and Panama in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank in Latin America and the Caribbean, Egypt and Jordan in the Middle East and North Africa, and Japan and Kazakhstan in Asia.

All Country Accelerators, along with Knowledge Partner countries demonstrating global leadership in closing gender gaps, are part of a wider ecosystem, the Global Learning Network, that facilitates exchange of insights and experiences through the Forum’s platform.

What is the theme of International Women’s Day in 2024?

Each year, there are effectively two different themes: one proposed as a campaign theme by the IWD website, which this year is #InspireInclusion , and the UN's official, which this year is " Invest in women: Accelerate progress ".

UN Women and the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs jointly publish an annual update on the progress towards SDG5.

In the latest – Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The gender snapshot 2023 – they reveal there's an "alarming" $360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures.

UN Women has outlined areas that need joint action to ensure women are not left behind:

Investing in women: A human rights issue

"Gender equality remains the greatest human rights challenge. Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies. Progress for women benefits us all."

Implementing gender-responsive financing

"Due to conflicts and rising fuel and food prices, recent estimates suggest that 75% of countries will curb public spending by 2025 . Austerity negatively impacts women and crowds out public spending on essential public services and social protection."

Shifting to a green and caring economy

"The current economic system exacerbates poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation , disproportionately affecting women and marginalized groups. Advocates for alternative economic models propose a shift towards a green and caring economy that amplifies women’s voices."

Supporting feminist change-makers

"Feminist organizations are leading efforts to tackle women’s poverty and inequality. However, they are running on empty, receiving a meagre 0.13% of total official development assistance ."

What is the state of gender parity globally?

The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2023 found that, although the global parity score has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, "the overall rate of change has slowed down significantly".

The index benchmarks 146 countries across four key dimensions (Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival and Political Empowerment) and tracks progress towards closing gender gaps over time.

Of the four gaps tracked, Political Empowerment remains the largest, with only 22.1% closed – a 0.1 percentage point increase on 2022.

The gender gap in Economic Participation and Opportunity remained the second largest of the gaps, with only 60.1% closed so far (up slightly from 58% in 2022). The pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis is having a disproportionate impact on women .

The gender pay gap is the “difference between the average pay of men and women within a particular group or population” according to the Fawcett Society, which campaigns for equal pay in the UK.

Each year, the charity marks Equal Pay Day in the UK, the day of the year at which women stop earning relative to men. In 2023, that date was 22 November.

How did International Women's Day start?

International Women's Day started with a protest that took place in New York City in 1908. Fifteen thousand women went out onto the streets to demand equal rights and better working conditions. In particular, they wanted shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. 

At the International Conference of Working Women in Denmark in 1910, a woman called Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international day for women. Everyone agreed it was a good idea to use the same day every year to take action for women's rights. The first International Women's Day happened the following year, in 1911. 

Why do we need an International Women's Day?

People participate in International Women's Day in many different ways and for many different reasons. But a common goal is gender equality.

In today's world it may appear that women have all the same opportunities as men. But if you look at the statistics worldwide, talk to women and girls around you or simply live in the world as a woman, you see this is not true. 

There are many examples of women and girls having a lower position in society than men and boys. They have fewer opportunities and they suffer specific injustices and problems because they are women. Here are some examples. Did you know that, around the world:

• teenage girls aged 10 to 14 are twice as likely to do more than 21 hours a week of housework as boys of the same age
• nearly a quarter of teenage girls aged 15 to 19 are not in school, compared to only 13 per cent of boys
• less than half of the world's countries offer girls and boys equal access to education
• many more girls than boys are married while they are still children
• child marriage often means stopping school, getting pregnant early, isolation and an increased risk of violence
• one in five teenage girls have experienced violence from their partner?

Many people believe situations of gender inequality like these can and should be changed.

What happens on International Women's Day?

On 8 March there are protests and other events to demand equal rights for women. You can find marches, talks, workshops, film and music events and more, near you or online. Many people wear purple, a colour worn by women who campaigned for women's right to vote. In some countries, children and men give presents, flowers or cards to their mothers, partners, sisters or other women they know. 

There is still a lot of work to be done for gender equality. Sometimes we lose important rights and go backwards with the progress we have made. But women's movements all over the world are still fighting for equality, and new generations are joining them. The people marching in the streets for equal rights are often young women and their friends. Around the world, Women are not given equal opportunities. There are countries where they are denied to raise a point about their lives and how they are treated. Girl child abuse is common in many places where many crimes like child marriages, gender-based are done and all this discrimination a Woman faces is on the basis of one chromosome. 

For ages, men have had more privileges in every aspect of life in society, which could be good pay scale, social status, or voting rights percentage but now we are living in the 21st century and the world is slowly moving towards gender balance. It’s moving towards equality for both men and Women which could include equal pay scale, social status, and equal voting rights for Women. This change is necessary and it is required around the world because we all are humans and equal opportunities and respect should be given to everyone. 

So it is important to have a Day that reaches out and helps in solving all the discriminations that are happening against Women. As we all know how important Women are. They play various roles which could be a caring mother, a daughter, and so on. On this Day, it’s important to show the Women in your life how much you care about them and how much you love them. 

Educational institutions are now open to celebrate Women’s Day. It’s a sign of progress and they are teaching students to honor and respect a Woman. 

I want to conclude my speech by saying that International Women’s Day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in social, cultural, and political fields. The Day formed by Women helps in bringing attention towards the forgotten Women’s rights and gender parity in a few places around the world. We are here to celebrate the presence of Women in society and to celebrate their achievements. We are here to celebrate International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March every year around the world. It is considered to be an important point in the movement of Women’s rights. It is the Day when Women in our lives are recognized for their achievements in their respective fields, which could be an Artist, a Teacher, in Health Care, or an Administrative Leader. 

Celebration of Women’s Day totally ranges from being a public holiday in countries like Afghanistan to being a protest against the injustice done on Women in a few places. To summarize. It’s the Day to celebrate Womanhood around the world.

About Women Empowerment

Empowering Women is a big responsibility, but it's also vital for gender equality. Furthermore, society benefits when Women are treated with respect and are not treated as second-class citizens. Women used to be limited in their houses and were not allowed to leave the house for employment before, but now things have drastically changed.

Their only source of income comes from their domestic obligations. However, civilization has evolved throughout time. Furthermore, this generation has high regard for Women and places a high value on them.

In many sectors, Women are now offered equal opportunities at work and are permitted to compete with, and sometimes even outperform, males. Women have begun to recognise their skills and abilities, and they are ready to walk out of their homes and contribute to the prosperity of their families and society as a whole.

Women are undoubtedly turning the world's attention to them. Also, it was previously impossible, but it is now doable, and they are doing so now. Women are achieving incredible heights and even travelling to space, as can be seen.

Furthermore, they are joining every field and succeeding in all of them, demonstrating their abilities. The most efficient approach to enhance communities, corporations, and countries is for Women to participate.

Furthermore, Women's participation strengthens peace accords, strengthens society, and makes economies more dynamic.

She inspires: Breaking the bias this International Women's Day

She walks through busy streets or makes her way through corridors lined with patients. She faces the strange glances thrown her way and takes on the snide comments. She listens to stories of pain or offers a word of hope. She farms on her little patch of land or braves unknown dangers to forage for food in the forest. Living in different parts of the region, she bears the scars of a range of challenges.

Some days she falters, some days are really hard, but she keeps finding her balance and keeps pushing on, breaking biases along the way and inspiring us to follow suit. On this International Women's Day , we bring you stories of women in the region who get up each day and stare their challenge in the eye.

Afghanistan: Doctor chooses to stay and serve

She's 29 years old, a mother of four and a gynaecologist-in-training at the ICRC-supported Rabia Balkhi Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan. Growing up in Pakistan, Dr Mariam Maqsoodi knew she would follow her parents' lead and become a doctor. Later, when she moved to her home country Afghanistan after completing her medical studies, she also knew it was where she was meant to serve. So, even though many of her colleagues left the country as violence escalated last year, Dr Mariam chose to stay. "I see it as my duty to serve women and to listen to them. That's why I am here," she says. Her story: "I grew up in Pakistan and was educated there and moved back to Afghanistan after finishing my medical studies. Now I am in the third year of my residency and have another one-and-a-half years to go," she says. Challenges along the way: Dr Mariam starts each day with the hard decision of leaving her children at home and stepping out for another packed day at the hospital. " Life in Afghanistan is not easy for anyone. The role of gynaecologists is so important here. Even though it is very hard for me to be away from my children throughout the day and we really miss being together, I keep reminding them that I have an important job to do and so I must continue," she says. The impact: "I've built special bonds with the patients. They begin to trust and share their life stories and even about the problems in their marriages. I hear a lot of stories through the day. I want to be there for them," she says. Circle of support: "While I am away from home, my mother-in-law cares for my children," she says. "That allows me to continue helping others."

Japan: Nurse overcomes barriers to care for others

She's soft-spoken, ever-smiling and empathetic. For Kozu Tsuda, who is an ER nurse based in west Japan, the power of positivity triumphs over the obstacles she faces when working under challenging conditions. She says she's not very fluent in English, but for humanitarian health-care workers like her, taking care of others is a great unifier as it transcends the barriers of language and region.  Her story:  Besides the ICRC, Kozu's journey as an aid worker has included stints with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Japanese Red Cross Society, spanning Iraq, Haiti, Bangladesh, the Philippines and South Sudan. She radiates positivity while talking about the tremendous experiences and says, "I try to do my best and adjust in any given situation."  Challenges along the way:  Despite her gentle nature and optimistic outlook, Kozu remembers being particularly disturbed when she went back to Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh on her second posting. "Things hadn't improved much but what made me sad was that people had made peace with their situation," she recalls. Another incident while she was in South Sudan left a huge impact and strengthened Kozu's resolve to train local health-care workers and build their capacities. "A baby who had malaria was brought into the paediatric ward. Its heart rate was 40 beats per minute, which is precariously close to death. The doctor and I immediately administered CPR in a desperate attempt to save the baby. But the mother screamed at us to stop! She thought we were putting the baby in danger with the CPR; clearly, she wasn't aware of the resuscitation process. But it was more worrying that in that ward, only the doctor and I knew how to perform CPR."   Learning from this experience, Kozu trained the nurses in CPR and the next time a child was rushed into the paediatric ward and needed to be resuscitated, they were successfully able to do that.   Circle of support:  Kozu says given the tough conditions humanitarian workers are sometimes exposed to, it's important for them to have a circle of support and good listeners around. Her current supervisor fits this role for Kozu. "Even my former supervisor in South Sudan was an amazing listener and she looked after me like family," she adds.  Her inspiration:  Kozu draws motivation from Mother Teresa and her spirit of service. Echoing the words of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, patroness of Mother Teresa, Kozu declares, "May you be content with yourself just the way you are," like a mantra for people whom this dedicated nurse continues to inspire daily.

Myanmar: Helping people separated by violence

Naing Naing Oo is part of an ICRC team in Maungdaw that provides a range of support to families separated by violence. The work is collaborative and unceasing. Naing Naing has been with the team since 2017, joining just as outbreaks of violence resulted in waves of displacement, impacting hundreds of thousands of people in Myanmar's Rakhine State. Her story: Naing Naing Oo remembers meeting a group of children who had survived being stranded at sea. In a small boat, with little food, they drifted for days. "When we talked to them, we were inspired – they had been so strong," says Naing Naing. "They had survived." Naing Naing was one of the many who had helped the children following the incident. "Now when they see me, they recognize me," she says. "I cannot forget this thing." A parent who needs financial help to visit a son or daughter in prison. A person recently released from a police lockup who needs assistance making the long journey home. Families looking for lost loved ones after a clash. These are just some instances where Naing Naing and her colleagues try to provide support. Circle of support: Having worked in a closely-knit team, Naing Naing says, "The first thing I look for is the working environment, which is amazing here. I have lots of support from my colleagues." Beyond the team, it is also the ability to work directly with people in northern Rakhine that is most rewarding. "I can work with communities... learn from them," Naing Naing says. The impact: "As an organization, we don't take sides. And that makes me feel very comfortable sharing about what we do and who we are with not only the people we work with in the villages, but also the near and dear ones like my family." The ICRC has worked in Maungdaw, not far from the border with Bangladesh, since 2015. Activities range from emergency aid like food and health services to helping communities build sustainable livelihoods, often together with partners such as the Myanmar Red Cross Society. "Here, lots of people know about the ICRC because of our food distributions," Naing Naing says. "People also know about our work to help reconnect families." Hope floats: In 2022, the dual impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 military intervention continue to linger and overlay the legacies of ongoing conflicts across the country, making life more challenging for people in Myanmar. Despite the obstacles, the numbers tell a story of hope. Across Myanmar in 2021, we were able to help more than 4,000 recently released detainees return home. We helped people visit loved ones behind bars more than 200 times and delivered close to 250 written messages between separated families. For Naing Naing, helping people feel comfortable enough to share their stories and needs is key to this work. "It depends on the person, but I don't ask hard questions," she says. "Instead, I ask 'how are you?' That's how we start the conversation."

Myanmar: Self-taught tailor challenges disability

In the town of Sittwe in Rakhine State, Khin Myat Myat Kyaw is one of many tailors. But it's her determination for self-learning that sets her apart. Born with a condition called spina bifida that makes mobility a challenge, Khin Myat Myat Kyaw could not attend school due to lack of accessibility options. Undeterred, she decided to build her own learning path. She taught herself mathematics and the basics of sewing. "I used go with my sister to the tailor shop where she worked – I would sit for hours, watching her sew," Khin Myat Myat Kyaw says. "When my sister bought her own sewing machine, I quickly learned to sew and started stitching my own clothes." We first met Khin Myat Myat Kyaw two years ago and provided her with a wheelchair to make places more accessible for her. Then, a few months ago, Khin Myat Myat Kyaw enrolled in a three-month tailoring course funded by the ICRC, helping boost her self-reliance. "I'm now able to stitch trousers, skirts, shirts and traditional wear," she proudly shares. Not only does Khin Myat Myat Kyaw support her family with the money earned but she is also able to donate some of the earrings she makes. "Even if you have a disability , you can always choose not to give up," she says as she gets back to stitching the next colourful piece of clothing on her machine.

Pakistan: Armed with confidence, she dismisses stereotypes

"People assume that a woman will not know much about explosives and weapons. So, they are often surprised that I work with the Weapon Contamination Unit in the ICRC. Some are quite upfront that they think a woman is not the right fit for the job," says Mahwish Sayeed, who works as a programme coordinator based in Islamabad. The reactions are not new to Mahwish, who has been in the field for more than a decade. "I have missed many opportunities because of the perception people have about women and because some cannot deal with my logical approach to things. But I continue to do the best I can and keep going forward," she says. Her story: Mahwish has three daughters and is committed to ensuring she is part of their life experiences. But her work is also very dear to her heart. "We have a diverse team that includes volunteers. We educate communities that are at risk and help to address the complex needs of those affected by unexploded ordnance and their families," she says. Challenges along the way: "I feel women are burdened with responsibilities before they are even born. We are expected to do well and handle all the responsibilities of being daughters, wives, mothers, students and full-time employees. I think it is important to set boundaries and not feel pressured to be excellent at everything at the same time," she says. The impact: As a mother, Mahwish is very conscious of her influence in shaping her daughters' view of the world and the part that they play. "I tell them, do not give up your dreams. Balance the different roles but do not lose sight of your own aspirations," she says. Circle of support: On days that are not packed with things to do, Mahwish finds solace and comfort in the company of her elder sister over a simple cup of tea. "She is a strong woman and catching up with her energizes me," she says.

Papua New Guinea: Fighting fears to build a better future

Anna John Lakaio has spent over three decades in defiance by choosing to work as a teacher in Upper Highlands, Papua New Guinea. Anna defies the idea that women should only stay at home, defies her own fear of suffering harm because of the frequent tribal fights, defies the community's expectation that women should remain silent and not participate in decision-making discussions and defies any resistance to getting girls educated or empowering the youth. Her story: Anna, who recently participated in a workshop organized by the ICRC for teachers, is from Tari in Hela Province and is currently handling the dual responsibility of Provincial guidance and counselling officer and a Provincial secondary school inspector in Hela. A mother of four, Anna sees education as the route for lasting change, be it reducing the humanitarian consequences of tribal infighting or creating a safer space for girls in the community. She does group sessions for raising awareness among students and also offers to counsel individually. Challenges along the way: "Working as a lone woman among many men is quite challenging. They consider me inferior and I often face discrimination such as not being included in important discussions. But I have worked very hard to serve with dignity and be a role model so that people can trust me," says Anna. She adds that Hela is also the "land of the unexpected" because of the tribal infighting. "It restricts our freedom but sometimes you have to walk, talk and do things despite the fear," she says. Her inspiration: Anna attributes the shaping of her thought and courage to the principal of a school in Enga where she taught. "Mrs Kisam Tare Muli mentored me and encouraged my passion to help our community. I keep recalling her words even to this day," says Anna. Now she encourages young girls and women to keep doing the right thing and to voice their opinions. Circle of support: Director for education in Hela Ronny Angu, her colleagues and her family are Anna's support system. "For issues related to women and children, I reach out to my friends in the Hela Education Women's network," she adds.

Philippines: A mother's strength gives hope

Analyn Repdos' son, JP, was four years old when he walked for the first time. She celebrated the moment as a milestone especially for her son, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Caring for a child with special needs can be a challenge for any parent and for Analyn it has been more challenging because of financial crunch. But Analyn is full of hope and believes that life will get better for her son as he gets help from the Davao Jubilee Foundation (DJF), a non-profit rehabilitation facility for disabled people in Mindanao (Philippines) supported by the ICRC. Her story: Analyn, 38, grew up in tough circumstances. "My father's income was barely enough to support the family, so we had many difficulties. Even after growing up and getting married my life did not become any easier," she says. JP was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was only about one-and-a-half years old. "Since then the entire family's focus has been on taking care of him. But he is improving and is now enrolled in a school for children with physical or mental challenges," says the mother of two. Challenges along the way: Helplessness was Analyn's first response when her son's condition was diagnosed. "It was hard and we wondered how we would pay for his therapy. I was also concerned about how people will treat my son. Even now, when we ride a jeepney (local transport) some people stare at JP. It pains me as a mother because I feel he is being judged," she says. Her inspiration: Analyn shares that her relationship with God keeps her hopeful. "Although there are times when I question God, being faithful to Him and believing that He has good plans for us keeps me positive. Also, my sons are an inspiration to me. I love them and want the best for them, so I am willing to take on the challenges," she says. Circle of support: Talking about the strength she draws from her husband and her family, Analyn says, "My husband is a man full of hope and a spirit to fight whatever we face. Both our families have also been a great support system to us. I cannot forget how my youngest brother took care of most of our pending hospital bills, even selling his car to help us and never asking us to pay him back. Our families understand our situation and have been there for us. I couldn't be more thankful."

Philippines: Rising from the ashes of Marawi

The five-month-long armed conflict that broke out in Marawi City, southern Philippines, in 2017 was a personal crisis for Isabel*. Her husband and son disappeared and still remain unaccounted for. While dealing with her sense of loss, Isabel talks about getting involved with the ICRC's accompaniment programme (a support programme providing holistic and wide-ranging assistance to families of the missing) and helping others cope with their challenges. Her story: Since her husband and son disappeared, 43-year-old Isabel has been living in ambiguity about what happened to her loved ones. "It is the hardest thing I have faced," she says. Trained as an accompanier by the ICRC's Mental Health and Psychosocial Support staff, Isabel leads peer support group sessions in her community. Since 2020, she has helped 22 families of missing people in three groups of six to eight families each. Challenges along the way: "Taking on the breadwinner's role abruptly was difficult. I used to work night and day, juggling multiple jobs, to support my family of six. I also struggled with reintegrating into the society. It was easy for people to tell me to just accept that my son and husband had died, but not seeing their remains or having any trace of them makes us think otherwise. We still nurse a small hope that they'll come back to us, alive," shares Isabel. Her inspiration: Isabel says that supporting other families of missing people gives her strength and gives meaning to her struggles as she can identify with them. "I feel a sense of relief in knowing that something good came out of my misfortune. Helping people makes my life more meaningful," she says. Circle of support: Isabel leans on her children and the families of missing people for support. "Having people to dedicate your hard work to and shower your love on makes life more bearable. We don't have much, but we have each other and that's everything," she says. (*Name changed to protect identity)

Decolonization Is Women’s Work

March 8, 1950—international women’s day—marked the embrace of a feminist battle against imperialism.

The 12-day Asian Women’s Conference in Beijing saw attendees from across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and South America and “forged a movement for all women to fight against colonialism and demand equal rights with full sovereignty,” gender studies scholar Elisabeth B. It was 1950, and the world was in flames: In Vietnam, Iran, Madagascar, Algeria, West Africa, South Africa, Tunisia, Malaya, Burma, and Cuba, wars of counterinsurgency were being waged against colonial powers that refused to leave. Women, with weapons in their hands and the courage to hide soldiers, grow food for the frontlines, and pass messages across their battlefronts, took part in fighting these wars for independence. At the same time, they sought peace, freedom, and women’s rights.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, they erupted in protests to demand an end to imperialism—the starting point for imagining decolonization as a global culture.

Today, corporate sponsors have sought to commodify International Women’s Day and turn it into women’s access to rule like capitalists. But this 1950 fight for decolonization built a culture that—if you look closely—still fuels the revolutionary spirit, and promise, of the day.

International Women’s Day began as a way to join working-class women’s struggles for basic rights to livelihood with middle-class women’s fight for the vote. At the International Socialist Women’s Congress, held in Copenhagen in 1910, German activist Clara Zetkin proposed holding an international women’s day in March. These meetings and demonstrations incited protests, including the Russian Revolution in 1917. From 1922 onward, the day was mostly celebrated as a holiday in the USSR and socialist countries to honor women’s rights gained under socialism.

The need for a decolonial agenda around International Women’s Day arose from the Global South, during the anti-imperialist Asian Women’s Conference held in Beijing, China, in December 1949. There, attendees found solidarity and carried that spirit back home in countless manifestations of anticolonial feminist activism. During those 12 days in Beijing, women from across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and South America forged a movement for all women to fight against colonialism and demand equal rights with full sovereignty. Many women from colonized countries had already joined their countries’ battles to crush colonial occupation. They had their own slogans: Bury the corpse of colonialism! If anyone is oppressed, no one is free! And they demanded that women from colonizing countries dismantle their countries’ war machines.

Attendees took that charge with them when they got back home. Just two weeks after returning from Beijing, for instance, Jeanette Vermeersch, a parliamentarian and member of the French Communist Party, addressed the French parliament to call for the withdrawal of France from Vietnam: “The Vietnamese people are fighting a just war,” she said, “a war in the defense of your aggression. You are fighting an unjust war, a colonial war, a war of aggression.”

Through networks of anti-imperialist and socialist women’s groups, the message of the Asian Women’s Conference traveled around the world. It would be a global, coordinated refusal of imperialism. The conference resolution spread: Celebrate International Women’s Day, a day for working-class women’s struggles, like never before.

When International Women’s Day arrived, it joined together women from all around the world in the anticolonial struggle for their full emancipation, as women from colonizing countries like France and the Netherlands demanded an end to imperialism in solidarity with women from Vietnam, Indonesia, Tunisia, and beyond. This included the demand that women hold equal rights to fully enfranchised men, not the truncated rights of colonized men with negligible rights to vote, apartheid rules of unfree movement, fettered access to jobs, and stolen lands.

The day punctuated ongoing insurgencies by people who were geographically far from each other, but were bound by common occupiers of colonial nations.

In Mar del Plata, Argentina, leftist women’s groups—such as the Union of Argentine Women and the Women’s Cultural Group—held the Congress for Peace in dozens of cities around the country to evade the authorities (who had banned their activities) and fight for a decent standard of living and political rights. In Brazil, women chose to protest the high-level U.S. economic delegation visiting Rio de Janeiro. They printed 100,000 leaflets and covered the city with 20,000 posters under the name “Protect Brazilian Petrol” to condemn the economic treaty signed with the United States. Their slogans sought peace and an end to U.S. interference in the Brazilian economy—its own form of neoimperialism—and protested the high cost of living.

Across the world, in Damascus, the Union of Syrian Women led a demonstration of women and children to the parliament to condemn war. Their protests were not without cost. Amine Aref Kassab Hasan, who had recently returned from the Beijing conference, was beaten and arrested, along with two other women and a 5-year-old girl. In Homs, another delegate of the Asian Women’s Conference, Salma Boummi, along with five other women and girls were arrested for a similar protest for peace. But in the face of the Syrian government’s violent response, 13 Syrian women’s organizations presented a memorandum to the Constituent Assembly to demand women’s equal rights, particularly equal pay for equal work. Though they were beaten back, the movement pressed onward.

Anticolonial leaders of the women’s movement, like Celestine Ouezzin Coulibaly (familiarly known as Macoucou) and Baya Allouchiche, took the lead in organizing working-class women in their countries, but also in their regions of North Africa and West Africa, respectively.

In Ivory Coast, Coulibaly toured Sudan, Upper Volta, and Ivory Coast to spread the word after attending the Beijing conference. She described the solidarity of women she witnessed, and she told of the success won by communist women in the People’s Republic of China, who drove out an army that had far greater armaments supplied by the Americans. After touring the region, Coulibaly led demonstrations of thousands of women on International Women’s Day in Grand Bassam, the French colonial capital of Ivory Coast, in protest of police repression and the murder of women who, in December 1949, had demanded the release of political prisoners who fought for independence from French colonial rule.

Like Coulibaly, after Allouchiche returned from the Asian Women’s Conference, she galvanized women in Algeria to join the anticolonial struggle. She toured Algeria and Morocco, spending 12 days in the radical province of Oran, where women were not yet organized. She described a world of solidarity among women, one that refused to buckle under the yoke of colonialism nor the yoke of patriarchy. She dared them to imagine: “the sun that has risen in Beijing will shine for us too!” Her speeches held in the month of February tipped the balance toward solidarity and a wage strike among dockworkers. Only a week before International Women’s Day 1950, over 300 Algerian women joined the strike on the docks of Oran to protest poor working conditions and to refuse to load ships with soldiers and supplies for the colonial counterinsurgency frontlines of Vietnam.

Global anticolonial solidarity required resistance in colonial centers. Delegates from the Netherlands, the United States, France, and England who attended the conference in Beijing took direction and brought colonized women’s struggle home. On the same day as the protests in Syria, Lebanon, Ivory Coast, Argentina, Brazil, and Algeria, Dutch women supported dock workers who refused to load ships with American armaments bound for the Dutch occupation of Indonesia by laying in the road and blocking the trucks from reaching the docks. In Enshede, Dutch women connected Dutch peoples’ high cost of living to the priority given in the national budget for military purposes over the needs of the working population of the Netherlands. Bread not Barracks , they shouted.

Formal colonialism fell in the decades after the 1949 Asian Women’s Conference. But economic colonialism continues today. Economic blockades have human rights consequences and debt packages dictate national policies. But women’s struggles for decolonization, peace, and equal rights hasn’t ebbed. If we turn our heads to Latin America, one memorable slogan from strikes held on International Women’s Day—“What they call love, we call unpaid work!”—draws the connections between the debt bondage and the need for women to provide structural networks of care. Femicide, drug trafficking, border policing, and U.S. intervention in Central America and Mexican economies have fueled endemic murders of women and girls. We see inspiration, too, from women in Mexico reacting to this, to join their internationalist call against systemic femicide, for “Ni Una Mas!” (Not One More).

International Women’s Day in 1950 revived the fight for anticolonial, anti-imperialist solidarity on the terms of the people most oppressed. Our regional and national women’s struggles are still global, still marked by economic and political colonialism in new forms. Survival for many is still precarious—we have a strong tradition in International Women’s Day to imagine an alternative future without inequity.

Annie Lennox Says 'Feminism' Should Be Represented from a 'Global Perspective' in Personal Essay

In honor of International Women's Day on Wednesday, the singer-songwriter shared why she's a "passionate global feminist"

Annie Lennox is opening up about how she became a "global feminist."

In honor of International Women's Day on Wednesday, the "Sweet Dreams" singer, 68, penned a reflective essay on why men and women around the world should understand what it means to be a feminist — and how The Circle , which she founded in 2008, "fights for a fairer world for women and girls across the world."

Read on for Lennox's essay, which has been shared exclusively with PEOPLE and lightly edited for clarity .

Why I am a passionate global feminist.

As a younger woman in the early '70s, it actually took me several years before I could identify with the term "feminist" as a self-descriptor.

When I wrote "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" back in 1985, I still didn't feel I "deserved" to account for myself as a bonafide feminist, as I suspected my mild obsession with make-up and shoes might disqualify me from belonging to the club. 

This misperception was additionally compounded by a persistent soft spot for men. Another factor I wrongly believed placed me firmly outside the feminist women's movement. 

Looking back, I suspect I wasn't alone in those feelings, misnomers and insecurities. My peer group of Cosmopolitan readers admired "real" feminists, like those who were bravely and defiantly demonstrating against the housing of nuclear weapons at  Greenham Common Air Base, but we probably didn't perceive ourselves to be fervent enough to take a stand under the same banner.  

Attitudes evolve and several years passed until 2010, when I was invited to take part in the Women of the Year Awards.

By that time I was confident (or naïve) enough to walk to the onstage podium and call for the women in the room to "Stand up if you're a feminist" — wrongfully assuming that everyone would immediately rise to their feet in a unified outpouring of collective Sisterhood.

I judged poorly. While one-half of the room stood up, the other 200 remained seated — awkwardly unsure as to what they should do with themselves.

Embarrassing? Just a little.

That experience taught me a lesson. Never assume anything. And even if I now suspect the reaction would be much more unanimous and enthusiastic these days, I'd be even more careful about jumping to projected conclusions. 

 Feminism needs to feel relevant and inclusive for all women and girls. It has to feel like part of all our lives, not something that only belongs to the most committed and radical among us.

In recent years, I've become more convinced than ever that feminism needs to be more accessible, understood and informed by women and girls, as well as men and boys, living in countries where the challenges and limitations are greatest. 

Most especially for millions of human beings living in countries such as Afghanistan, where emancipation and empowerment are essential for progress, but where equal rights and opportunities are currently being rolled backwards at the speed of light.

Ask "those" women what greatest challenges are facing women and girls face right now and you might get very different answers from the responses you'd receive in Washington, London or Paris.

In Tehran and Kabul, they will tell you it is about supporting the teenage girls who are risking their lives and futures to campaign for their freedoms and basic human rights.   

In Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they will tell you it's about the need to campaign for female garment workers to receive a living wage, safe working conditions, and fair treatment from their employers.

And in countries all over the world, they will tell you it is about ending the physical or sexual violence that directly affects their lives and will affect 1 in 3 women in their lifetime.  

 ONE IN THREE WOMEN. Almost 1.3 billion in total.

 If abused women had a country to themselves, the population would be equivalent to the whole of Europe and North America put together. 

And yet when has the global epidemic of sexual violence ever been on the agenda at a G7 summit?

Fifteen years ago, I became founder of The Circle, an organisation dedicated to achieving equal rights and pay for women in every corner of the globe and ending the violence suffered by hundreds of millions every day.  

Through our grassroots partners at the front line of that struggle around the world, we currently help thousands of individual women and girls every year. From the UN to the European Parliament, we advocate for the global changes that will make a positive difference to billions.  

But above it all, The Circle exists to promote the concept of a Global Feminism that all women, everywhere can identify with and perceive as relevant to their daily existence.

It took me years to arrive at the understanding and realisation that Feminism must be identified and represented from a Global perspective.

Apart from the glass ceilings of board rooms and equal pay ... let's try to go for the right to live safely and securely, the right to a basic living wage and an education that will take us ALL to a life worth living.

Lady Gaga defends Dylan Mulvaney against anti-trans hate after International Women's Day post

Lady Gaga is standing up for Dylan Mulvaney .

The "Born This Way" singer, 37, on Monday defended the TikTok star and trans activist against online hate after participating in a photo shoot with her. Mulvaney recently shared pictures with Gaga while celebrating International Women's Day and was met with many anti-trans comments that misgendered her.

In a post on Instagram , Gaga criticized news outlets for using the word "backlash" to describe this response.

"It's appalling to me that a post about National Women's Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred," Gaga wrote. "When I see a newspaper reporting on hatred but calling it 'backlash' I feel it is important to clarify that hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence. 'Backlash' would imply that people who love or respect Dylan and me didn't like something we did. This is not backlash. This is hatred."

But Gaga wrote that the hate Mulvaney's post received was "not surprising given the immense work that it’s obvious we still have to do as a society to make room for transgender lives to be cherished and upheld by all of us."

She added that she feels "very protective" of Mulvaney and the entire transgender community.

"I hope all women will come together to honor us ALL for International Women’s Day, and may we do that always until THE DAY that all women are celebrated equally," she said. "That all people are celebrated equally. A day where people of all gender identities are celebrated on whichever holiday speaks to them. Because people of all gender identities and races deserve peace and dignity."

Mulvaney commented on Gaga's post, "You mean the world to me. Love ya."

Before their photo shoot, Gaga had expressed support for Mulvaney, commenting on TikTok in 2022 that she has "been watching your videos." In a video that same year , Mulvaney, who chronicled her gender transition on TikTok, freaked out after learning that the singer knew who she was.

"Lady Gaga's in my comments," Mulvaney exclaimed. "Oh my god. I don't know what to do with my body and my mouth."

In 2023, Bud Light sparked conservative backlash over a collaboration with Mulvaney, who later said the company ghosted her following the promotion.

"What transpired from that video was more bullying and transphobia than I could have ever imagined," Mulvaney shared. "I was scared, and I was scared of more backlash, and I felt personally guilty for what transpired."

Mulvaney was named Woman of the Year by the LGBTQ+ magazine "Attitude" in October. In a speech at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, she said that some people still refuse to accept her as a woman.

"No matter how hard I try, or what I wear, or what I say, or what surgeries I get, I will never reach an acceptable version of womanhood by those hateful people's standards," Mulvaney said.
