A Guide for Using Tutor.com

Tutor

Achieving success in your classes can take a lot of hard work, but the Academic Support Center is here to assist you! We provide many resources to help make the learning process go more smoothly, including Tutor.com, a service built into select Penn State World Campus courses to assist students in writing, math, and other subjects.

Tutor.com is available 24/7, so whenever you have time, they have time. Penn State World Campus provides 10 hours in Tutor.com free of charge to students in supported courses. Please note, not all courses have access to Tutor.com. If you are in one of those courses, you will receive an email notifying you of the service, which is accessible from any device with internet access.

How Do I Access Tutor.com?

Tutor.com, incorporated into your Canvas course, is accessed via the course menu on the left-hand side.

Once in Tutor.com, you’ll see a page where you can chat live with a tutor or drop off your essay.

On-Demand Tutoring

  • In the drop-down menu under “What do you need help with today?” enter your question and attach any necessary documents.
  • Select Connect Now . You will be connected with a live tutor shortly.
  • Work one-on-one with a tutor. Ask a question or talk over a concept.
  • After the session, you can go to My Account and select Sessions to download the transcript.

Drop Off Essay Review

  • Select Submit a paper for review , attaching and submitting your file.
  • In less than 12 hours, you will get an email saying that your reviewed essay is ready.
  • To pick up your essay, click on the green rectangle that appears at the top of the Tutor.com page. You can use the Previous Sessions page to review the feedback and retrieve your essay.

The purpose of a tutoring service is to help you learn and to supplement the work you have already begun in your courses. Tutors can help you understand a homework concept or explain a tricky grammar problem, but they cannot give you all the answers to your math quiz.

How do you get the most out of a live tutoring session?

  • Talk with a tutor early and often. Ask a tutor for feedback on your introductory paragraph before you have written a full essay.
  • Come prepared. Bring questions and know the assignment expectations.
  • Collaborate with the tutor. For drop-off services, give the tutor the information about the assignment and the instructor’s feedback, if any.
  • Keep the discussion going. Reach out to your instructor and to your peers.
  • Leave yourself enough time. Do not procrastinate. Submit a draft for review a few days before the deadline. You will incorporate feedback better when you’ve had time to process and consider a tutor’s suggestions.

If you need assistance with Tutor.com, call the HelpDesk at 814-865-0047. If you have questions about Tutor.com or would like to learn more about support services, please contact Megan Fung at [email protected] .

The platform offers a subscription plan for Chegg Writing, which includes a plagiarism detector, free citation creation, and proofreading and grammar scans for an unlimited number of papers.

The writing subscription is $9.95 per month, however there is a free trial. Prices for Chegg study and tutor start at around $15.95 per month.

Best for High School Students : Princeton Review

Use promo code INVESTO15 for 15% off MSRP.

  • Price: Starts at $40 an hour up to roughly $350 to $1,450 for six-month flex plans
  • Grade Level: K-12 and higher education
  • Frequency: One to 10 hours per month, or 10 hours to 50 hours in six months

High school students will benefit from the help of expert tutors that can cater to individuals’ one-on-one needs and specific learning goals. The tutors are available 24/7 for those late-night cramming sessions.

One-on-one tutors plus premade content for academic help

Tutors available 24/7

Heavily vetted tutors include professors, teachers, PhDs and other experts

Can be expensive

No one-off sessions

Princeton Review just might be the perfect fit for high school students looking for help with their writing skills.

Whether they're looking for help on a book report, a research paper, an admissions essay, or something else, they can call on these tutors 24/7 to polish writing skills. Even better: Princeton Review's instructors are categorized by topic, so students can specifically search for tutors with expertise in whatever subject help is needed.

Rather than negotiating rates with individual tutors, Princeton Review offers several different pricing plans, including monthly subscriptions with a set number of hours per month or a more flexible plan allowing access anytime.

Monthly packages range from about $40 for one hour to roughly $340 for 10 hours per month, while six-month flex plans run from approximately $350 for 10 hours ($35 per hour) to around $1,450 for 50 hours ($29 per hour).

These flex plans allow students to log on at any time during the six months, and a session can be as short or as long as they want.

Best for Transparent Pricing : Skooli

  • Price: Starts at $0.82 a minute with pay-as-you-go; as low as $0.65 a minute if you prepay 32 hours
  • Grade Level: Elementary school through college

There’s no commitment needed with Skooli. You can use the platform as needed, and you’ll only have to pay roughly $1 per minute.

Get help instantly

No commitment needed

Pay per minute makes rates reasonable

15 minute minimum

No student-tutor relationship, since you’ll book as needed

Since Skooli offers tutoring in plenty of different subjects, you’re likely to be able to find writing tutors who can help tailor your essays to the specific needs of your subject. Writing a history research paper is very different from writing a literary analysis, and you can browse Skooli’s wide range of tutors to find one with the background and expertise to help with your specific project.

You can use Skooli as a long-term tutoring option—either with one specific instructor or different ones each time students log on—but it’s also designed for in-the-moment queries. The pricing structure reflects that: Skooli charges around $1 per minute rather than monthly or even hourly rates, so all time is accounted for while learning.

For the most part, tutors on Skooli are well-vetted and experienced and hold degrees and teaching certifications, so students can be sure that every minute spent will further their knowledge.

Best National : Kaplan

  • Price: Courses start at $549 (ACT prep) and $1,100 (LSAT prep)
  • Grade Level: From high school admissions through career advancement
  • Frequency: Varies by course

Kaplan is widely known and trusted for online tutoring, and offers test prep tutoring from high school admissions tests through college admissions tests and beyond.

Robust offering

Help for specific tests

Widely known and trusted brand

Not much offered beyond test prep courses

Not for basic writing tutoring

Kaplan's name and its test prep formulas are top of the line. For students looking for private or group tutoring to prepare for a standardized test or entrance exam, Kaplan’s tutoring program is one of the most comprehensive.

Students can sign up for small-group remote classes with experienced teachers or enroll in private, one-on-one tutoring. Tutoring sessions are highly structured, including multiple full-length practice tests and in-depth explanations for scores. It’s as close as it gets to taking the test before you actually take it.

While a good portion of the tutoring focuses on the multiple-choice sections of these tests, Kaplan tutors also work with students to improve their writing skills and help them learn what the test review boards are looking for in each individual exam. The platform is for serious, long-term tutoring with highly experienced tutors and exclusive materials, not one-time sessions, and the prices reflect that.

Prices vary depending on which test you’re preparing for. If you're prepping for the ACT, you can enroll in an online class with top ACT teachers for $549. If you want one-on-one tutoring, options start at $749. If you're prepping for the LSAT, they offer a live online course for $1,100 and one-on-one tutoring plus a live online course starting at $1,999.

Best for Creative Writing : Wyzant

  • Price: Starts at $25 an hour
  • Grade Level: All, plus adults

Wyzant allows you to search for tutors in your subject matter of interest, including both gen-eds and more creative classes.

Ability to search for the type of tutor you want

Search within your price range

24/7 access to tutors

Experience is specific to the tutor you choose

Site does not have tutors adhere to a specific methodology

No tutor/student relationship, as sessions are one-off and as-needed

While the majority of tutoring sites focus more on straightforward academics, Wyzant also includes creative writing tutors. Whether you’re a student working on an English class assignment, a creative writing major looking for a little extra guidance, or just someone wanting to dig into creative writing on your own time, there’s likely an instructor for you.

The site filters tutors by broad subject area and then by narrower expertise. Prospective students can view a tutor’s profile, rating, and hourly rate before reaching out. Many of the site’s creative writing tutors have advanced degrees or professional experience, so you can be sure you’re getting genuine expert help.

Wyzant gives students and tutors a lot of leeway to negotiate their own relationships, both in the classroom and in terms of rates. Tutors set their own fees (the average is between about $25 and $65 per hour, although there are plenty of tutors above and below that range), and the platform offers a one-hour guarantee: the first hour lesson with a new tutor is guaranteed to be a success, or it’s free. It’s a great way to dip your toe in and get help honing your craft.

Best for Professional Writing : Business Writing Center

  • Price: $69 up to $595
  • Grade Level: Adult
  • Frequency: Self-paced for four months

Business Writing Center caters specifically to professionals by teaching business writing for reports, proposals, and other important work writing.

Specifically for business professionals

Classes for non-native speakers available

Self-paced classes may not be for everyone

Greater fee for individualized courses

Business Writing Center (BWC) isn’t your typical tutoring service.

Rather than aiming its services at secondary school-aged students, the site is geared toward business professionals looking to brush up their writing skills. While some of the offerings are more suitable for business people whose first language isn’t English, there are options for one-on-one tutoring and feedback on professional reports, proposals, and other important work documents.

Rather than hourly tutoring, BWC offers its tutoring services through “coaching” courses. The company has a few different specialties, including document writing, coaching for executive writing, and a more general individual training option.

Self-paced courses start at $69, go up to $595, and can last up to four months. They allow students to work on real-world writing projects and get personalized feedback from an experienced teacher.

An online writing tutor can help students and professionals alike brush up on their writing skills so that their finished writing projects are more successful. Since you can access these tutors from anywhere, they can accommodate most schedules and learning rhythms. We chose Chegg Study as the best overall online tutoring service because it's affordable, convenient, and offers a range of writing tutoring options.

What Is an Online Writing Tutoring Service?

An online writing tutoring service is a website or platform that connects students with writing tutors, completely online and remote. These companies may be geared toward a specific grade level or type of writing, or they may be a more general platform to connect students and tutors.

A research study found that students who sought the help of tutors in writing the second draft of essays progressed more and scored higher on their second drafts than those who did not seek help. The same study found that students who used online tutoring services in addition to in-person tutoring in their school’s writing center scored even higher than those who did not take advantage of online tutoring services.

How Much Do Online Writing Tutoring Services Cost?

Online writing tutoring services cover a wide range of prices. In general, there are two basic models: pay-per-session or subscription. For the former, students pay for access each time they use the service for tutoring help. For the latter, students pre-pay for a package that spans a certain amount of time, number of sessions, or even a mini-course that also includes one-on-one tutoring time. Many tutoring services charge $1 per minute or $35 to $60 per hour. Monthly packages can range from about $69 to thousands of dollars.

What Can You Learn From a Professional Writing Tutoring Session?

Adult professionals can expect to gain practical skills they can apply directly to the writing they do in their chosen profession. Some of those skills may include document writing, executive writing, using basic grammar and sentence structure, and writing for non-native speakers of English.

Online writing tutors may also look over previously written documents and provide edits and/or suggestions to help you polish them.

What Features Do Online Writing Tutoring Services Have?

Every tutoring service structures its offerings a little differently, and each tutor may have their own particular style of teaching. That being said, these platforms are usually based around chat functions, either video/audio or text-based (or some combination of both), and many services have some type of screen-sharing and document-sharing capabilities.

Most online writing tutors will focus on helping students apply their knowledge in a practical sense. While some might have pre-planned assignments to develop particular skills (more common in specialized subjects like creative writing or test prep), other instructors prefer to have students come prepared with an assignment they need help with and give feedback to strengthen it.

Online writing tutoring doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and we’ve tried to make selecting an instructor as easy as possible. Because “writing” is such a broad skill applied to so many different settings, we’ve sorted out some of the categories that we think will be the most useful to the largest number of students. The platforms here range from specialized expertise in niches like business writing and test prep to more general essay-writing assistance.

Students seeking a writing tutor may want a long-term preparatory course or help with an individual essay. With this in mind, we’ve included a wide range of specialties and, more importantly, price points, from pay-per-minute instant feedback to formal, highly researched, long-term prep classes that cost significantly more over the course of several months.

Submission Timing

One of the most important parts of receiving online tutor feedback is timing.   Remember, writing tutors require time to review an essay and write feedback. Do not wait too long to submit your essay; if you do, you may not receive feedback before the deadline or you may not have time to make the changes the tutor suggests.

Tutors make every effort to return feedback within 48 hours of submission. However, depending on volume and length of submissions, return times may take up to 72 hours.  Your tutor will email your feedback to your HAWKmail account as an attachment.  You will need to download the attachment to view the tutor's comments in the margins of your paper.

As you prepare your essay for submission, please adhere to the following guidelines.

  • All documents must be submitted in .doc or .docx format.
  • Attach assignment sheet.
  • The tutor’s primary focus will be on organization, clarity, and content.

Virtual Writing Center

The Virtual Writing Center is an asynchronous form of tutoring that allows students to receive feedback on academic essays by submitting them to tutors via email. The Virtual Writing Center is a helpful resource for students who do not have the ability to see a tutor in person or by virtual appointment, but would still like feedback from an experienced writing tutor.

Types of Submissions

Students can submit a variety of written work, including the following:

  • Academic papers, such as essays, research papers, or annotated bibliographies
  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Professional/Academic correspondence
  • Letters of Intent
  • General questions regarding the grammatical/mechanical rules and the writing process

Targeted Feedback

Virtual Writing Center Tutors will provide the following feedback:

  • Identification of recurring errors in grammar and mechanics within the content of your submitted paper, along with explanations of the grammar and mechanical rules
  • Explanation of essay structure and format and assistance in organizing your paper
  • Balanced feedback and suggestions for improvements in continuity and effectiveness
  • Reference to resources such as the OWL Purdue and the Khan Academy
  • Answers to specific questions regarding your paper

Tutors will not proofread/correct all mistakes in your paper, complete ‘peer review’ assignments, or help with quizzes or exams.

Response Time

We strive to reply within 48 hours, Monday - Friday. Papers submitted after 2 p.m. on Friday may not be reviewed until the following Monday, depending on tutor availability.

Revisions can be sent directly to the original tutor by simply replying to the email. You can also send your paper to another TLCc tutor for a different perspective. Please, include the name of the tutor you originally worked with and a description of the changes you made so that we know your submission is a revision.

Submission Instructions

Please send only one paper per email submission. Please do not submit multiple copies of the same paper. If multiple copies are received, only one will be forwarded to a tutor and the rest will be deleted.

Before sending in your work, please read the detailed Instructions for Submitting a Paper Online .

Access Submit Writing for Feedback Calendar Click on each topic below to learn more about how to book an appointment. Please familiarize yourself with our policies before your first appointment.

How does the Asynchronous Writing Feedback service work?

If you are unable to have an Appointment with a Writing Specialist or Tutor, you may submit writing for feedback. When you sign up via Oasis, you will receive an email directing you to complete the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form. You will fill out the required information on the form and submit your draft and any related materials (e.g., prompt). Then, the Specialist or Tutor you signed up for will take a look at your draft, give you feedback, and return it to you.

While we will do our best to support you, we recommend that (if possible) you consider an Appointment with a Writing Specialist for a live consultation so that we can discuss ideas in real time. If none of our writing support options work for you, please email Kevin Sitz at [email protected]

Please make sure your Google Doc is set to “anyone with this link can edit” to ensure the Specialist or Tutor can give you feedback. If you do not do this, the Specialist  will cancel your appointment. If you experience difficulty, please email your Specialist to reschedule.

How do I submit my paper for feedback?

STEP ONE. Go to tutoring.ucdavis.edu and click on “Writing.”

STEP TWO. Once you are on the Writing Page, click on “Submit Writing for Feedback”

STEP THREE. Read through our policies. On this instruction page is a link to book your appointment.

STEP FOUR. At the bottom of these instructions is a link to book your appointment. You must sign in with your UC Davis username and password (sometimes called CAS or Kerberos).

STEP FIVE. In the appointment booking website, select “Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers” from either drop-down menu and “Submit Writing for Feedback.”

STEP SIX. On the next page, fill out your appointment details with your name, email, phone number, and what you need help with (e.g., UWP 22, Personal Statement, Scholarship).

In the Special Situation box, click the appointment type that applies (Appeals Letter or OSSJA Referral, Job or Internship Cover Letter, Scholarship Essay, or UC Davis class paper or assignment). Then in the Reasons box, indicate the specific type of writing you are working on (e.g., UWP 1, Gilman scholarship, medical school secondaries). When you’re ready, click “Next.”

STEP SEVEN. Once you can see the calendar, you can book your appointment.

Across the top of the calendar, you can filter by appointment type. Submit Writing for Feedback Appointments are only available as "remote" appointments.

In the top center, you can click on the drop-down menu to select the name of the Tutor (marked with PEER on their name) or Specialist (marked with STAFF on their name) you want to give you feedback. You can also select “Any Available Advisor” to see everyone’s calendars at once.

Click on an appointment time that works for you. Please note that for this kind of appointment you WILL NOT be meeting with your Specialist or Tutor. This is the time the Specialist or Tutor has set aside to review your paper and prepare your feedback. Click “Confirm.”

STEP 8. Once you have confirmed your appointment, check your UCD email. Oasis will automatically send you an email with further instructions to complete the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form. Complete this form as soon as possible so your essay is ready for the Specialist or Tutor at the scheduled time.

Please note that it is important to indicate on the form the date of your appointment as that will make it easier for your Specialist or Tutor to locate the correct version of your essay to give feedback on.

What are the logistics for this service?

The Specialist or Tutor will spend up to 50 minutes reviewing your work and giving you feedback on your Google Doc. This feedback will be based on the approach we use in Appointments with a Writing Specialist or Tutor. We will not have an opportunity to discuss it together unless you make an Appointment with a Writing Specialist or Tutor. In our feedback, we will share what’s working well, pose questions, and give suggestions for areas of revision.

In order to receive the most helpful feedback, be sure to tell us on the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form what you would like us to comment on.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

A Specialist or Tutor CAN

  • Highlight grammar error patterns
  • Talk through concepts
  • Show examples to help you better understand grammar
  • Give you suggestions and help you generate ideas to fully answer the prompt
  • Help you further develop your ideas and analysis
  • Share online writing resources with you for self-learning
  • Help you with sentence-level concerns
  • Pose questions that a reader might have
  • Help generate questions you can ask your TA or professor
  • Help you effectively cite sources and avoid plagiarism

A Specialist or Tutor CANNOT

  • Tell you what words to use
  • Write or rewrite your essay for you
  • Proofread your essay or fix your grammar for you

Essentially, we are here to GUIDE you through the learning process; we are not an editing service or homework machine. We want to make sure our feedback will help you better understand the concepts and become a better writer, not just write a better paper.

How do I get written feedback on a Google Doc?

You have access to Google Docs as a UC Davis student. If you have been using another word processor, you can follow these steps to use Google Docs to create your document and share it with us.  You must set sharing permissions to “anyone with this link can edit” to enable us to leave feedback:

STEP 1: Go to drive.google.com and log in.

STEP 2: Go to “New” and “Google Docs.”

STEP 3: Paste your essay into the document. On your document, you should also include any assignment instructions and prior feedback you have received.

STEP 4: Share your essay.

Click on Share

STEP 5: Click on “Get Sharable link”

Under “Get Link” click “Change,” select UC Davis in the left drop-down, and select “Editor” in the right drop-down.

STEP 6: Make sure the link permissions allow editing (see sample above). Copy the link and paste it into the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form.

Once the specialist has completed their feedback, you will receive an email. The specialist will also remove themselves from your document.

How can I get feedback in a different way?

If you would like to request your feedback in a different way (such as video or audio-recorded feedback) because you need accommodations or cannot access feedback on a Google Doc:

  • Follow the steps above to create and share a Google Doc on the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form.
  • On the Submit Writing for Feedback submission form, click “Yes” when asked if you would like to receive your feedback in another way. After you’ve submitted your form, contact the Director of the Writing Support Center, Kevin Sitz at [email protected] to discuss your options.

Good question! All students are advanced a set number of minutes at the beginning of each semester. We ask students to use their time strategically by being ready with questions when they start a live session or by only submitting an essay once until they get initial feedback.

If students surpass the provided time, they can write to [email protected] requesting more minutes. A staff member will review the account, ensure the student is using the system properly, and give suggestions if necessary on getting the most out of the minutes available.

While we wish we could provide unlimited minutes to our students, we are financially limited and do our best to distribute the service to as many students as possible.

Presentation Submission

Update: I’m going to give you two options on this assignment:

  • https://support.office.com/en-us/article/video-record-presentations-2570dff5-f81c-40bc-b404-e04e95ffab33 (Links to an external site.) (this video discusses how to record in powerpoint)
  • For the paper format, separate by powerpoint slides. Use headers such as “Powerpoint Slide 1” to separate the information.
  • You will submit two files: a powerpoint file and a word file.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Matt

For this assignment, you will review the following Strategic HRM case developed by SHRM: Aetna Investing in Diversity Case_Final.pdf .

You are going to be filling the role of Raymond Marcos, Chief Diversity Officer @ Aetna. The case revolves around the need for Raymond to prepare to make a presentation to the company’s board of directors. Your job is to review all the information Raymond has compiled, prepare the presentation, and present it to the Board. In this case, Raymond is responsible for making “logical arguments and a compelling case to the board to support the company’s continued investments in diversity.” Raymond has compiled a lot of information so you will have to choose the most relevant information to make the best case to the Board.

In your presentation, pay extra attention to the use of metrics to support your assertions.

Your presentation should be a minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes (the SHRM document says he has 35 minutes for the presentation; however, you are limited to 10-15 minutes).
