National Award-winning director Vetrimaaran is back with a new film titled Viduthalai Part 1. The Tamil film, which was released last month, is now dubbed in Telugu and has hit the screens today. Check out our review to know how it is.

Kumaresan (Soori) gets appointed as a police officer in a sensitive village surrounded by dense forests and jagged routes on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. He serves as a driver in the police camp, where his superiors are leading a mission called Operation Ghost Hunt to nab the leader of Praja Dalam, Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), who opposes the government’s decision of mining the hills for valuable minerals. Unfortunately, none of the police officers is aware of Perumal’s identity and whereabouts, but the honest and upright Kumaresan discovers his location. What happened next? Did the police believe in the tip of a driver? How is Papa aka Tamilarasi (Bhavani Sre) related to this story? Did the police catch Perumal or not? The movie has all the answers.

Plus Points:

Director Vetrimaaran and his movies have a separate fan base. The director always showcases social issues in a realistic style. In Vidudala Part 1, he talks about the police and their behaviour towards the commoners and showcases how policemen treat the general public.

As a story, Vidudala Part 1 is nothing new to audiences. But Vetrimaaran’s style of making is one of the main assets of this period film and makes the audiences glued to their seats.

He also needs to be appreciated for choosing comedian Soori in a serious role. It is quite a surprise to see a comedian in such a serious role and Soori has nailed his character of an upright policeman.

Though the screen time is low compared to other lead characters, Vijay Sethupathi is as usual good in his role. The director also hinted that the second part will focus more on Makkal Selvan.

Bhavani Sre is truly exceptional in the role of Papa alias Tamilarasi. She delivers exactly what the director needs, and she looks more attractive in a non-glamorous role. She needs to be appreciated for taking up this challenging role. Her scenes with Soori are lovely to watch on screen. Gautham Vasudev Menon and Chetan also performed very well. The rest of the actors are just okay.

The dubbing is good. The 4-minute single-shot scene in the beginning, the intense climax portion, and the glimpses of part 2 are worth watching.

Minus Points:

As mentioned above, the story is nothing new to audiences, and what makes it more uninteresting is the slow narration, especially in the second half. Though this is how Vetrimaaran makes films, it is important to know that he needs to write an engaging screenplay to make Vidudala a better film.

Most of the scenes are prolonged with lengthy conversations. Though they are important for the proceedings, they create unnecessary lag and thus make one feel bored.

The excess amount of violence and nudity, specifically in the second half, might disturb a section of the audience.

The other problem with the film is that the majority of actors are unfamiliar to Telugu audiences, and it might be difficult for them to connect with the characters easily. Also, certain scenes soaked in Tamil nativity might not connect well with Telugu audiences.

Technical Aspects:

Director Vetrimaaran must be appreciated for showing reality on screen in a natural manner. He presents exactly what he wants to. As a filmmaker, he succeeded in making people glued to their screens for the most part. But he should have come up with a more engaging narration in the second half.

Director of Photography R Velraj did an amazing job. He showcased his exceptional skills in aerial and extreme wide-angle shots, which are amazing to watch. Tunesmith Ilaiyaraaja gives a lively background score that tunes well with the situations. The film has a couple of songs, and they are also good. Editing should have been better, and the production values are fine.

On the whole, Vidudala Part 1 is a realistic period cop drama that has some well-executed moments. Vetrimaaran’s making, Soori’s performance, and the climax part worked out very well. You can watch the film this weekend if you manage to bear the adult content and sluggish narration.

Vetrimaaran is a critically acclaimed and award-winning filmmaker who made films like Visaranai, Asuran, Kaaka Muttai, etc. His latest offering is Viduthalai (Part 1) in Tamil which was released on 31st March. Two weeks later, the film is dubbed into Telugu as Vidudhala Part 1 and released today. The film portrays comedian Soori as the protagonist and Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist. This raises curiosity on the film. Will Vetrimaaran score in Telugu? Let’s check out.

Notorious and ruthless separatist leader Master (Vijay Sethupathi) of Praja Dalam, is fighting against the government and police. He is behind the deadly bombing of a train resulting in killing several innocent people. He is called a ‘Ghost’ who is untraceable and uncatchable. Operation Ghosthunt is formed by the government to nab Master. But the police and government are struggling hard to make this operation work. A small constable Kumaresan (Soori) joins as a driver in the police company. He is a sincere policeman with a heart in the right place. A serious of unfortunate incidents happen to him at work place that lead him to prove himself as police and protect his job. In this journey, Kumaresan attempts to nab Master and this is the crux of Vidudhala Part 1.

Performances

The transformation of Soori from comedian to a serious cop role Kumaresan is praiseworthy. He has stunned with his role and performance, all thanks to director Vetrimaaran who has well-designed characters in the film and choose the best artistes for them. Vijay Sethupathy as usual outstanding and brilliant as notorious naxalite Master. There is a nude scene of Vijay in the film, which was blurred due to censor, that shows his courage, passion towards the character. Gautham Menon as police boss adds a lot of value and weight. Female lead Bhavani Sri’s makeover as de-glam role is worth mentioning. Her contribution to the film is not less. The police personnel in the film are shown brutal. Rajiv Menon, Balaji Sakthivel, Chetan impress with their acting. All the actors have Vetrimaaran’s mark and delivered best performances.

Technicalities

Writing and direction of Vetrimaaran is unique. He continues this with Vidudhala as well. There is intensity and depth in characters and story around them. Visuals are striking. DOP Velraj shows his strength with the brilliant camera work. Songs have no great importance in the film and Ilaiyaraaja couldn’t do much justice to the tunes. Whereas Maestro is back with his background music score. Editing is fine. Slow-paced narration and length issues disappoint to an extent.   Highlights

Predictable Story Slow-Paced Narration Climax

Vetrimaaran returns to his favourite subject of socio-political. He has once again attempted one such with Vidudhala. Given that he is master of the genre, he dominated the film with his craft. Story-wise, it is very simple, thin and predictable. But it has a lot of depth. Like all Vetri’s films where it is about underdog or common man, here the story is led by an ordinary police constable Kumaresan who takes the centre-stage. He is innocent, honest and sincere to his job. Vetri chose perfect cast to portray the emotions intensely and impactfull. He scored brownie points here.

The initial half revolves around Soori, his world, the series of incidents that put him in trouble. At the same time, director Vetri also establishes the conflict strongly. The very opening scene of the film is train sequence where tragedy and story is unfolded. This is where the film’s conflict is also introduced without any time delay. The shots and visuals are striking that add to the story narration. 

However, Vidudhala also has its share of flaws or shortcomings. The story is predictable with slow-paced narration which puts off here and there. The entire sequence of hunt of Master (Vijay Sethupathi) in the latter half is major episode in the film. This could have been shown in a much better way. Although Master’s identity and whereabouts are identified by Kumaresan, he doesn’t run and wait for the police to attack. This is not convincingly told. The climax sequence deserves better writing and presentation. The nudity scenes are overdone but highly impactful too.

Overall, the brutal portrayal and realistic presentation is what makes Vidudhala a non-regular film and makes it a league above the rest. Vidudhala is not for all. It is a hard watch if you are a faint-hearted. But give this a try.

Vidudhala : What's Behind

Vetrimaaran is known for his hard-hitting films. His films Aadukalam, Visaranai and Asuran won national awards. His film Viduthalai Part 1 which was released last month got rave reviews. Now the film's Telugu version is releasing on 15 April 2023. The film is a period drama based on the short story Thunaivan written by Jeyamohan. The film's OTT rights have been bagged by Zee 5 and streaming will be done after the end of its theatrical run. The film has a star cast of Vijay Sethupathi, and Gautham Menon and let us find out what impact Vidudhala made on viewers.

Vidudhala Movie Story Review

Vidudala story is all about human values, conscience, police brutality, and injustice. Ragavender (Chetan), the Officer in charge, of E Company ill, treats new recruit, Constable Kumaresan (Soori) after he disobeys his orders while saving needy villagers.

In the meantime, Special Task Force is formed by the government's higher officials comprising of A. Subramaniyan(Rajiv Menon), Chief Secretary, Ilavarasu(Ilavarasu), Minister of Public Works to nab the dreaded Naxalite Perumal "Master" (Vijay Sethupathi) after the train bombing.

Where the Operation Ghost Hunt headed by Sunil Menon (Gautham Menon) leads to and what role Kumaresan plays and how Paapa (Bhavani Sre) connected to form the crux of the story.

Vidudhala Movie Artists Review

Soori who is known for his hilarious, light-hearted roles underwent a remarkable transformation in the role of the constable. In fact, he lived in the role and viewers immediately get connected to his character as he is spellbound by his expressions, emotions, body language, and dialogue delivery. The way he played the subdued role and then shows his intensity in enacting deadly stunts attracts everyone.

Female lead Bhavani Sre got a performance-oriented role and she justified it with her intent. She displayed good emotions and complimented Soori. Both with their performances elevated the scenes taking the film to another level.

Vijay Sethupathi makes an impression with his subtle entry and though he is not shown clearly, he makes an impact increasing the curiosity and interest levels over the second part promising a deadly confrontation during the climax. Rajiv Menon and Gautam Menon showed the authority required for the government's higher officials.

Vidudhala Movie Technicians Review

Vidudhala story by Vetrimaaran has all the ingredients that are his trademark. The story backdrop is set in the 1980s and the ill-treatment and misdeeds of the police officials, all have Vetrimaaran's previous films. Watching the narration and plot, one remembers Vetrimaaran's earlier film Visaranai in which he highlighted police brutality. Even one remembers Taanaakaran directed by Tamizh, who is the co-director of the film.

Vetrimaaran starts the narration in an intense manner with the bombings and then goes into the detailing of various characters and this generates interest among movie lovers. He highlighted the government side and the way encounters are sensationalized. The character arc of Soori is beautifully done and the people revolving around them have been shown in an effective way.

Vetrimaaran narrated the story in an interesting manner through Soori's perspective and how he thinks the police force to be the right one an later finds out the startling facts. In between Vetrimaaran touched the haves and the have-nots and the caste divide in society. Vetrimaaran got the optimum out of Soori and Bhavani Sre but a lesser screen presence to Vijay Sethupathi may disappoint his fans. The story is nothing new and Vetrimaaran tried to turn it intense and hard-hitting with his screenplay and direction.

Ilaiyaraaja with his background music recreated the 1980s atmosphere in a beautiful manner. His background music takes movie lovers into the story. However one gets a feeling that at times he overdid it.  Velraj's cinematography turned the narration captivating showcasing the mountains and other locales in a realistic and gripping way. Editing of Ramar could have been better as at times the pace dipped slowing the proceedings. The production of RS Entertainment is good.

Vidudhala Movie Rating Analysis

Altogether, Vidudala is a hard-hitting brutal film. Vetrimaaran who directed Vidudala once again came out with a riveting film showcasing caste differentiation, police brutality, government vs Naxal ideologies, the sufferings of the common people who get crushed between police and Naxal war, and whatnot. However, this time he toned down the depiction of police brutality while depicting the atrocities of women being turned naked and other violent scenes to some extent. For all the impactful story, as Vetrimaaran followed his trademark elements, viewers aren't offered anything new. He treated a similar path with his story, screenplay, and direction. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 rating for Vidudala.

Critically acclaimed Kollywood director Vetrimaaran’s Vidudhalal- part one starring Vijay sethupathi, Soori in the key roles haa hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Kumar (Soori) tops the police Academy training and joins the service. To the huge disappointment to Kumar, he will be offered as a tiffin carrier post for his higher grade officers. In the meantime fine day, government and police searching most wanted Prajadalaam head Parumallu (Vijay Sethupathi). What happens next?How will the circumstances turn critical for Kumar? Will Kumar able to find out the whereabouts of Parumallu, forms the crucial crux of film.

Performances: Soori is impressive in his role as the lead actor. He carried he film on his shoulders literally and brought authentic texture to the proceedings. He acting in all crucial scenes is effective and brings depth to the narrative.

As usal, Vijay Sethupathi is terrific with his getup and rustic makeover. His screen presence adds realistic texture to the proceedings. His Ferocious acting is amazing and true to the character he portrayed.

Gautam Vasudev Menon perfectly fitted in the given cop role as the talented actor is convincing in his role.

Adding to the above roles, other actors such as Chetan are impressive in their respective roles.

Technicalities: Music by Mastero Ilaiyaraaja is soothing as his songs are situational and takes an involvement in the scenes but his background score is no that gripping compared to his previous best works.

The photography work by Velraja is arresting as his work is visible in every frame. The tried present to entire film on a realistic approach. Editing work is appealing but lacks sharpness in it.

Production values this concept oriented film are okay and so is case with the production design work.

Analysis: Vidudhala mainly focuses on the social circumstances prevailing in the society. Director Vetrimaaran dealt the concept in his own style by not missing the commercial elements.

He presented the entire film on an effective note which we can witness in the scene order and characterization. To summerize, Vidudhala is hard hitting social drama in typical Vetrimaaran’s style. Those who like message oriented dramas will surely like the film.

Verdict:  Realistic approach!

Among the many cult filmmakers in Kollywood, the name of Vetri Maaran stands tall. This time, he chose to present his product in the Telugu circuit as well so let us see if this has won some attention or not.

Story Set on the backdrop of the year 1987, Kumaresan (Soori) is an honest man who joins the police department as a driver. He is posted in a sensitive area and is now part of ‘Operation Ghost Hunt’. The operation is to nab Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), leader of a group named Praja Dalam which is opposing a corporate company trying to do mining in the forests. Kumaresan soon locates the whereabouts of Perumal and in the process, he also falls in love with the local village girl Tamilarasi (Bhavani). However, things change when police brutality increases and the village is brought for interrogation. What happens from there forms the rest.

Performances Soori has given a stunning performance. Being a comedian, his portrayal of such a serious character is praiseworthy. Vijay Sethupathi was brief but he was impressive. Balaji Sakthivel was brutal. Gautham Menon was superb. Chetan was perfect. Bhavani was excellent. Rajiv Menon was neat. The others did their bit as required and added value.

Crew The story is written in a rustic manner and the script was alright. However, the screenplay was not compact enough leading to lags. The background score was nice and one song was worth humming. Cinematography scores the brownie points with excellent capturing of the visuals. Editing was not upto the mark. Costumes were suiting the backdrop and art department was good. Deeper Look There is a distinguished difference between Tollywood and Kollywood filmmakers and someone like Vetri Maaran has a very signature style. He is more inclined towards the realistic style of storytelling and even some of his visuals come across like a documentary. Here, he chose a very sensitive subject and as always, he has portrayed the oppression of the rural people in a big way. The film takes off in the right way and has a good momentum till the interval bang. However, the second half failed to carry the same drive. The overdose of brutality and rawness is something the Telugu audience find hard to digest. Also, few scenes were dragged to the full leading to lag and boredom. The presence of unknown faces also adds to the hiccups. Overall, the film is no doubt a good attempt to show something realistic but it went a bit overboard in terms of the treatment. At the box office, the film might have an okay collection but the sequel might have something promising as it appears Vijay Sethupathi would be seen more in it.

ప్రముఖ తమిళ దర్శకుడు వెట్రిమారన్ కంటూ ఓ వర్గం ప్రేక్షకులు ఉన్నారు. పదిహేనేళ్ళ కెరీర్ లో ఆయన తెరకెక్కించింది ఆరు చిత్రాలే అయినా… అందులో జాతీయ అవార్డులను అందుకున్న సినిమాలూ ఉన్నాయి. సమాజంలోని అట్టడుగు వర్గాలను రిప్రజెంట్ చేస్తూ వెట్రిమారన్ సినిమాలు తీస్తుండటంతో సహజంగానే విమర్శకుల ప్రశంసలూ ఆ యా చిత్రాలకు లభిస్తుంటాయి. అలా వెట్రిమారన్ తీసిన తాజా చిత్రం ‘విడుదలై’. తమిళంలో మార్చి 31న విడుదలైన ఈ సినిమాను గీతా ఫిలిమ్ డిస్ట్రిబ్యూషన్ ద్వారా అల్లు అరవింద్ తెలుగువారి ముందుకు ‘విడుదల’ పేరుతో ఈ నెల 15న తీసుకు రాబోతున్నారు.

డైరెక్టర్ వెట్రిమారన్ ‘విడుదల’ చిత్రాన్ని గవర్నమెంట్ వర్సెస్ ఎక్స్ ట్రిమిస్ట్స్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్ లో తెరకెక్కించాడు. ఖనిజ సంపద ఉన్న అటవీ ప్రాంతాన్ని ప్రభుత్వం ప్రైవేట్ కంపెనీ పరం చేయాలనుకున్నప్పుడు… అక్కడి తీవ్రవాదులు దాన్ని ఎలా ఎదుర్కొన్నారు? అందుకోసం ఎలాంటి పోరాటం చేశారు? అనేది వెట్రిమారన్ ఇందులో చూపించాడు. అంతేకాదు… ఏజెన్సీ లోని పోలీస్ క్యాంప్స్ లో అధికారుల దాష్టికాలకూ, అంతర్గత కలహాలకూ, కోవర్ట్ ఆపరేషన్స్ కూ ప్రాధాన్యమిచ్చాడు. నిజానికి కథ చెప్పుకోవాలంటే ఇది సింపుల్ అండ్ సింగిల్ పాయింట్.

ప్రభుత్వ చర్యలను వ్యతిరేకిస్తూ ప్రజాదళం అనే తీవ్రవాద సంస్థ రైలును బాంబు పెట్టి పేల్చేస్తుంది. దానికి కారకుడైన దళ నాయకుడు పెరుమాళ్ (విజయ్ సేతుపతి)ను అందమొందించడం కోసం ప్రభుత్వం ఏజెన్సీ ప్రాంతానికి స్పెషల్ ఆఫీసర్ సునీల్ (గౌతమ్ మీనన్)ను పంపుతుంది. అప్పటికే కానిస్టేబుల్ గా ఏజెన్సీలో పోస్టింగ్ వచ్చిన కుమరేశన్ (సూరి) తన పై అధికారుల అగచాట్ల కారణంగా నానా కష్టాలు పడుతుంటాడు. అక్కడి గిరిజన యువతి తమిళరసి (భవాని శ్రీ)తో ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. ఆమెకు తీవ్రవాదులతో బంధుత్వం ఉందనే విషయం కుమరేశన్ కు ఆలస్యంగా తెలుస్తుంది. ఒకానొక సందర్భంలో తీవ్రవాది పెరుమాళ్ ను చూసిన కుమరేశన్ పరిస్థితి అగమ్యగోచరంగా మారుతుంది. పెరుమాళ్ ఆచూకిని పై అధికారులకు అతను చెప్పాలని అనుకున్నా… కొందరు పోలీసులు అడ్డు పడతారు. పెరుమాళ్ వివరాల కోసం గిరిజనులను స్టేషన్ కు రప్పించి పోలీసులు ఓ పక్క హెరాస్ చేస్తుంటే… పెరుమాళ్ ను పట్టుకునేందుకు కుమరేశన్ గ్రామంలోకి అడుగుపెడతాడు. మరి అతనికి పెరుమాళ్ చిక్కాడా? పోలీసుల ఆగడాలకు ఫుల్ స్టాప్ పడిందా? కుమరేశన్, తమిళరసి ఒక్కటి అయ్యారా? అనేది మిగతా కథ.

నిజానికి ఈ సినిమాకు ముగింపు లేదు… ఎందుకంటే అసలు కథను దర్శకుడు వెట్రిమారన్ ‘విడుదలై’ పార్ట్ 2 లో చూపించాలనుకున్నాడు. ఇందులో ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ మొత్తం నిజాయితీపరుడైన కానిస్టేబుల్ కుమరేశన్ కష్టాల చుట్టూ తిప్పిన దర్శకుడు, సెకండ్ హాఫ్ తీవ్రవాదుల పట్ల సానుభూతి కలిగేలా కథను మలిచాడు. తీవ్రవాదులు పోలీసులపై చేసిన దాడులకు, రైలు పేల్చివేతకు కూడా బలమైన కారణాలను చూపించాడు. దాంతో మూవీ మొత్తం తీవ్రవాదుల కొమ్ము కాసినట్టుగా అయిపోయింది. దీనికి తోడు ప్రధమార్థంలో మొదటి అరగంట డాక్యుమెంటరీని తలపించింది. ద్వితీయార్థంలోనే కొంతలో కొంత కథ, కదలిక ఉంది. అయితే పోలీసుల అకృత్యాలను జుగుప్స కలిగేలా తెర మీద చూపించడం దారుణం.

తీవ్రవాదుల చర్యలను సమర్థించే వారు, వ్యతిరేకించే వారు ఈ సొసైటీలో ఎప్పుడూ ఉంటారు. అయితే… కాలం చెల్లిన ఆ సిద్ధాంతాలకు అధిక ప్రాధాన్యం ఇవ్వడమనేది సినిమా రంగంలో ఇటీవల కాస్తంత పెరిగింది. తమిళనాట పరిస్థితి ఏమో కానీ తెలుగులో మాత్రం ఇలాంటి సినిమాలను ఆదరించే రోజులు పోయాయి. చిరంజీవి, రామ్ చరణ్ నటించిన ‘ఆచార్య’, రానా ‘విరాట పర్వం’ చిత్రాలే అందుకు ప్రత్యక్ష ఉదాహరణలు. ఇక మావోయిస్టుల భుజం కాస్తూ ఆర్. నారాయణ మూర్తి తీస్తున్న సినిమాలకు ఎంతో కాలంగా ఆదరణ దక్కడం లేదు. అయినా… ఏ ఆబ్లిగేషన్ తో అల్లు అరవింద్ ఈ చిత్రాన్ని తెలుగులో పంపిణీ చేస్తున్నారో అర్థం కాదు. బహుశా మొన్న ‘కాంతార’, నిన్న ‘మాలికాపురం’ చిత్రాలను విడుదల చేసిందుకు కాంపన్ సేషన్ గా… తనకు ఇజాల పట్టింపులు లేవని తెలపడానికి ఈ చిత్రాన్ని రిలీజ్ చేస్తున్నారేమో!!

నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే… కమెడియన్ గా మంచి పేరున్న సూరి ఇందులో నిస్సహాయుడైన కానిస్టేబుల్ పాత్రను అద్భుతంగా పోషించాడు. గిరిజన యువతిగా భవాని శ్రీ సహజ నటన కనబరిచింది. ఈ మధ్య కాలంలో విజయ్ సేతుపతి చేసిన పాత్రలతో పోల్చితే ఇది బెటర్ క్యారెక్టర్. తీవ్రవాద సంస్థ నాయకుడిగా బాగానే మెప్పించాడు. పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్ పాత్రలు వరుసగా చేస్తుండటంతో గౌతమ్ వాసుదేవ మీనన్ నటనలో మొనాటనీ కనిపిస్తోంది. స్టేట్ చీఫ్ సెక్రటరీగా ప్రముఖ ఛాయాగ్రాహకుడు రాజీవ్ మీనన్ ను ఎంపిక చేయడం బాగుంది. ఆయన బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్ పెక్యులర్ గా ఉండి ఆకట్టుకుంది. ఇక ఇతర ప్రధాన పాత్రలను చేతన్, ఇళవరసు, మున్నార్ రమేశ్, శరవణ సుబ్బయ్య, దర్శకుడు బాలాజీ శక్తి వేల్ పోషించారు. ఇళయరాజా నేపథ్య సంగీతం మూవీకి స్పెషల్ ఎస్సెట్. చైతన్య ప్రసాద్ రాసిన పాటల సాహిత్యం అర్థవంతంగా ఉంది. బాణీలు వినసొంపుగా ఉన్నాయి. ఆర్ వేల్ రాజ్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. నటీనటుల, సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల పనితనం ఎంత గొప్పగా ఉన్నా… ఇలాంటి చిత్రాలు అన్ని వర్గాలను మెప్పించలేవు.

We Were the Lucky Ones (Hulu)

Executive produced and written by Erica Lipez ( Julia , The Morning Show ), this first TV show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score at the moment is adapted from Georgia Hunter's New York Times bestselling novel about a Jewish family separated at the start of World War II - and their determination to survive and to eventually reunite. One sibling flees Europe, one is forced into exile, and the others scramble to escape certain death by either working grueling hours in their ghetto's factories or hiding in plain sight as gentiles.

The show stars Joey King and Logan Lerman. " We Were the Lucky Ones ," Hulu explains, "demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century's darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive. The series is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds."

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (Max)

This next TV show is a shocking documentary series that uncovers the dark behind-the-scenes world of late 90s and early 2000s children's TV - focusing, particularly, on Dan Schneider's problematic run as a showrunner and producer on Nickelodeon. Episodes cover everything from actor Drake Bell's abuse by a dialogue coach to sexual innuendo present in children's programming, as well as the toxic environment of writers rooms.

A review of this docuseries in The Guardian probably said it best: How on earth was this stuff ever broadcast? "This series is hard to watch without becoming emotional," one Rotten Tomatoes viewer review reads. "I liked the entire series and respect everybody's contributions, but Drake's courage to come forward and share his story of abuse to the world is why I will never forget the show. I highly recommend this series."

Jerrod Carmichael: Reality Show (HBO)

This third TV show we want to spotlight for its perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score at the moment comes from a risk-taking comedian whose eight-episode docuseries here plays out sort of like episodes of Seinfeld . Comedy sets are interspersed with quasi-unscripted scenes from Carmichael's daily life, scenes that are often lacerating in their frankness - such as when he's discussing his sexuality with his mother and father.

"I'm trying to Truman Show -myself," Carmichael says at one point in the series. This is a performer whose last special, Rothaniel , included deeply personal details such as the fact that his mother's conservative Christianity won't let her accept her son is gay. Carmichael, meanwhile, is also wrestling with the fact that his father had a secret second family for years.

"There's public and private," one of Carmichael's friends tells him in his new show, "and then there's masturbatorily public." All in a day's work for a comedian who prefers to deconstruct life and his own reality in front of cameras.

Godzilla x Kong First Reviews: Full of Mindless, Glorious Spectacle, Just as Expected

Critics say the latest chapter of the monsterverse doesn't boast the most coherent story, but with kaiju fights this good, it doesn't really matter..

On the heels of the Oscar-winning success of the Japanese outing Godzilla Minus One and the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , fans might be craving something more goofy and fun in a kaiju film, or they could be disappointed by the lack of seriousness in the latest Monsterverse outing. Either way, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delivers what’s expected, according to the movie’s first reviews. Critics either hate its dumb mayhem or enjoy its mindless spectacle, but they’re mostly saying the same thing: if you want to watch Titans going at it, crushing landmarks and ignoring human life as they save the world more than destroy it, then you can’t do much better than this fantastical sequel.

How are the human characters?
