As the Muslim League passed the resolution, the Hindu correspondents began condemning and starts calling it Pakistan Resolution.

Hindus also criticized Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the other prominent leaders of that time. The purpose of mentioning these sacrifices is that our leaders and forerunner faced a lot of criticism and made endless efforts to give us an Islamic independent state.

So 23 rd march is the day of pride, day of feelings for every Pakistani as on this day a dream of an independent state was laid for Muslims so that they can live on the teachings of Islam, can freely follow their culture, traditions and have their own life style. Pakistan Resolution Day – 23rd March 1940

The people of Pakistan celebrate the 23rd of March, every year, with great zeal and enthusiasm, to commemorate the most outstanding achievement of sub-continent Muslims who passed the historic Pakistan Resolution on this day at Minto Park, Lahore in 1940.

The Lahore Pakistan Resolution, also known as Karar Datey Pakistan, was indeed a landmark in the history of the Muslims of the sub-continent. Before this, the Muslims of the subcontinent had no goal and no future in view, and Muslim politics remained in the hands of individuals with conflicting interests and inclinations.

As soon as the Lahore Resolution was passed by the Muslim League, the Hindu press started criticizing the Muslim League and declared this resolution the Pakistan Resolution.

The personality of Mohammad Ali Jinnah was also criticized by the Hindus and their prominent leaders. Mohammad Ali Jinnah gained nationwide popularity after the Lahore Resolution because the Muslims of India had a lot of expectations from him, and he was the only source of inspiration for the Muslims.

The All India Muslim League played a vital role in the creation of Pakistan in the year 1940. The Muslim League had become a stronger political party for the Muslims of the Indo-Pak Subcontinent, under which the Muslims were struggling for a separate homeland for them. By this time, the great leader of the Muslims, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, had become the lining symbol of Muslim unity and Muslim politics, and the Muslims had so completely centered on him that he had become almost an institution in himself.

Pakistan resolution day

23 March 1940, Lahore, Pakistan Resolution Day

In the words of Quaid-i-Azam , “ Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religions, philosophies, social customs, and literature. They are neither intermarried nor interdine, and indeed, they belong to two different civilizations that are based mainly on conflicting ideas and conceptions. Their concepts of life and of life are different. It is quite clear that Hindus and Muslims derive their inspiration from different sources of history. They have different epics, different heroes, and different episodes.

The resolution which was passed at the session reads: “ No constitutional plan would be workable or acceptable to the Muslims unless geographical contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary. That the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in majority as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign ”.

It further reads, “ Adequate, effective, and mandatory safeguards shall be specifically provided in the constitution for minorities in the units and in the regions for the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political, administrative, and other rights, with their consultation. Arrangements thus should be made for the security of Muslims where they are in a minority. ”.

The Resolution turned down the concept of United India and recommended the creation of an independent Muslim state consisting of Punjab, N. W. F. P. (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Sindh and Balochistan in the northwest, and Bengal and Assam in the northeast. The majority of Pakistanis, especially the youth, are patriots and follow in the footsteps of Quaid-e-Azam, but unfortunately, the Pakistani government has, from time to time, messed up the ideology of Pakistan completely. In 1940, the Muslims decided their destiny; hence, not the way it is in the present, 2014, everything is opposite and messed up completely.

Last year, the Balochistan Liberation Army ( BLA ) Blew off  Quaid’s Residency , which was sad and shameful for the government. Only one guard was assigned to take care of this treasure, but that’s not all. You won’t believe what’s happening at Mazar-e-Quaid. I am sure that after watching these two posts and the videos, you will become a rebel against the government.

Quaid-e-Azam always spoke about justice, but that does not exist anymore for the ordinary Pakistani at all.  Governments are so corrupt that even election rigging cannot be sorted out. Billions and trillions of dollars are going where no ordinary Pakistan can tell, but we still have the education, health, and necessities issues lying in front of us.

Where is Quaid’s Pakistan? Why only youth care and nobody else even remembers what he said and what Pakistan should’ve been by now? In 1960, “Pakistan was about to be the Asian Tigers,” one of the leading South Asian countries in the region, but after the fall of Dhaka, everything changed.

Until 1973, there was no authentic constitution in the country. Although the 1958 Constitution existed, I don’t know who or how it was practiced. 1973’s constitution changed for an ordinary man in Pakistan.

Don’t blame the youth for the wrong decisions and plans. The government is busy somewhere else while distributing laptops and loans with interest, which is Haram in Islam for the youth.

Still, we have the chance to save Pakistan from these corrupt people in power. You and I make the difference; trust me, we live and die for our motherland, and we have that same spirit to lead our country proudly. InshaAllah, we will succeed.

Take care of Pakistan, and Quaid’s dream will come true. Love Live Pakistan.

23RD March 1940 was the day of hope and determination of thousands of Muslims of the subcontinent. On this day, the head of All India Muslim League (AIML) Muhammad Ali Jinnah passed a resolution for the creation of a separate federation based on Muslim-majority regions in British India. He successfully won the debate by speaking to the party members in Lahore, he explained that Hindus and Muslims are two separate entities, as they are entirely different in cultural and religious aspects. Pakistan celebrates 23rd March every year with great spirit and enthusiasm. Every year on this day, the government arranges a special event to give respect to this day. The Lahore Resolution Day parade by the armed forces of Pakistan is the main celebration of the event. This day is celebrated in the memory of a lot of struggles put together by our leaders and most importantly, our mentor QUAID E AZAM in the creation of our beloved homeland Pakistan.

So the nation must mark this 23rd March not only as Pakistan Day, but as the day for revitalizing and reawakening national resolve to stand firm, strong, and united against all the challenges with courage, enthusiasm, and determination.

23rd March Pakistan resolution day

Stone, marble and steel: the story of minar-e-pakistan in 1959, field marshal ayub khan commissioned the creation of the monument and the first stone was laid on 23rd march 1960, exactly 20 years after the lahore resolution was passed..

23rd March Pakistan resolution day

On a crisp spring day in 1940, under the shadow of the Badshahi Mosque, in a city that has been at the heart of the Muslim subcontinent for centuries, a group of men resolved to create a separate homeland for their people.

Surrounded by leaders of the All-India Muslim League and the Khaksars, Muhammed Ali Jinnah took to the stage in Minto Park to address the thousands in attendance, laying down the unequivocal demand for Pakistan. The Lahore Resolution, signed the next day on 23rd of March, became the bedrock on which the struggle for Pakistan was built.

Today, on the exact spot where the founders of the nation once stood, stands a monument that not only commemorates that momentous occasion, but whose history mirrors the fortunes of the young, struggling nation. For the keen eyed, within the flowing white lines of Minar-e-Pakistan can be seen the vision of the new state, and the ideals meant to guide it.

Murad Saeed allowed to contest Senate election

Minto Park – like much else in British India – was named after English nobility; in this case Lord Minto, Viceroy and Governor-General of India. Once a parade ground for the British military, the park was an important symbol of Pakistan’s colonial legacy – one that needed to be replaced by an equally important symbol. As the turbulence of a bloody Partition and the pressures of mass migration began to subside, Pakistan looked to do just that. In 1959, Field Marshal Ayub Khan commissioned the creation of the monument and the first stone was laid on 23rd March 1960, exactly 20 years after the Lahore resolution was passed.

However, the ambitions of Ayub Khan soon met with reality. The new state of Pakistan could not afford a grandiose monument – symbolism had to replace sheer scale. Even this revised goal needed extensive funding – which the government of Punjab arranged by instituting the Pakistan [Day] Memorial Cess (Punjab) Act, 1964, which taxed racecourse and movie tickets. Still, Ayub Khan needed the right man for such a job; and fortunately, he found exactly what he was looking for.

Pentagon mulling plans for Gaza peacekeeping force: Report

The story of Minar-e-Pakistan is entwined with the story of its builder; Nasreddin Murat-Khan. Born to a Turkic family in Dagestan, Murat-Khan’s struggle against the Russian Empire’s occupation of Muslim-majority Caucasus region parallels the independence struggle in the Subcontinent, albeit with a different result. Unsuccessful in freeing the region, without a home, and living in a refugee camp in Germany, Murat-Khan chose to migrate to newly created Pakistan with his family in 1950. Here in his adopted homeland he used his triple degrees in architecture, civil engineering and town planning from the Leningrad State University (now known as the Saint Petersburg State University) to help build countless iconic structures – such as Gaddafi Stadium and Fortress Stadium in Lahore.

Yet he would be best known for designing and engineering the Minar-e-Pakistan. Murat-Khan’s mixed heritage and his pan-Islamic sense of identity would be reflected in the minaret’s design – a syncretic blend of Mughal and modernist architecture that produced something uniquely Pakistani.

Biden quietly signs off on more bombs, warplanes for Israel

Minar-e-Pakistan rises from the centre of Minto Park’s – later renamed Iqbal Park – verdant gardens. Seen from the air the tower sits on a tear shaped platform which points straight towards the Badshahi Mosque.

The Pakistan Movement is carved into the very foundations of the monument. The first platform is rough-hewn rock from Taxila – its coarseness and disharmony symbolising the early days of the movement. The next step is hammer-dressed stones; they are more uniformly sized, and fit together better – the movement takes shape. Between the second and third platform lie two interlocking crescent shaped pools – the same crescent that adorns Pakistan’s flag, and represents Islam in many cultures across the world. These crescent pools lock to create a circle that will hold the final two platforms. The third is chiselled and embellished stone – it is refined and decorated, but it still carries imperfections. The final platform is made of gleaming marble, shaped like a five-pointed star, set in the center of the two crescents. For coarse to fine, from stone to marble, the platforms chart the journey and eventual success of the Pakistan movement.

But what comes after independence, what is to be built on top of the white marble star; a new nation.

The Minar’s base is made of six large marble slabs bearing inscriptions that aim to capture the ideals of the Islamic state. The national anthem of Pakistan in Urdu and Bengali, excerpts from Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s speeches, Quranic verses and a few couplets of Dr Allama Iqbal are intricately etched on the base walls. As it rises the structure curves and opens up like the petals of an unfolding flower. This universal motif of prosperity is made from steel and concrete - the materials which built the modern world.

The tower rises to a height of 70 meters and is topped by a stainless-steel dome. The change was made at the behest of the government’s planning committee who wanted the monument to resemble a mosque’s minaret. Nusat-Khan had envisioned a top that gradually met at a sharp upward pointed spike – to represent the nation’s continued progress into the future.

FDE holds academic excellence award ceremony

Minar-e-Pakistan was completed after eight years in October 31, 1968 at an estimated cost of Rs7,058,000. It instantly captured the nation’s imagination with its pure idealism and its distinctive silhouette became synonymous with Pakistan overnight. But its story was far from over.

As Pakistan lurched from one crisis to the next the monument suffered with it. Iqbal Park fell into disrepair, the Minar’s white marble yellowed, the nearby tomb of Hafeez Jallandhari became a safe haven for drug addicts, and the grounds were repurposed for other activities. The Pakistan People’s Party government in Punjab even allowed dog races in the park in the 1970s. In 2016, under the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the reconstruction work on the Greater Iqbal Park began – today it is back to its original grandeur. Throughout all of this, Iqbal Park and Minar-e-Pakistan have remained an enduring symbol of the Pakistan movement. To this day, political parties – secular or religious, conservative or liberal – have all sought to launch their movement from Iqbal Park, under the shadow of the Badshahi Mosque, in a city that has been at the heart of the Muslim subcontinent for centuries.

What is 23rd March Pakistan Day? For The First Time, Pakistan Gets That Independent Wakeup Call From Muslim League Leaders!

Pakistan Day, also called the Pakistan Resolution Day or Pakistan Day, is a national holiday in Pakistan that commemorates the passing of the Lahore Resolution passed on 23 March 1940 at Iqbal Park Lahore .

*Do you know? 23rd March in Pakistan is also called Pakistan Republic Day, because nine years later after gaining independence, the status of Pakistan changed from Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan – on this exact same date in 1956.

The All-India Muslim League organized its annual public session at Lahore’s Minto Park , dated from March 22nd to March 24th in 1940. At this event, the Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah , and other Founding Fathers, recounted the facts concerning the cultural differences between the Hindus and Muslims, and brought forward a historical resolution that cemented the establishment of a separate Muslim-majority nation-state in South Asia , today called Pakistan. On 23 March, the resolution received its approval signatures from Pakistan’s Founding Fathers.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah portrait from Pakistani money.

Pakistan was established on 14 August 1947 and the independence of India was established one day thereafter. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder, became Pakistan’s first Governor and Liaqat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s first Prime Minister.

The Indian act of 1935 presented Pakistan with the legal framework until its own constitution was passed in 1956. The works and efforts of the Committee of Basic Principles drew the constitution’s fundamental outlines in 1949. The first set of the Constitution of Pakistan was enacted in Pakistan on 23 March 1956 after many discussions and years of enhancements. This was the successful transition of the country from the Dominion to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Thus, 23rd March in Pakistan is called Pakistan Day or Pakistan Resolution Day because of the Lahore Resolution in 1940 and called the Pakistan Republic Day because of the successful transition of the country from the Dominion to the Islamic Republic on the same date in 1956.

Other names for Pakistan Day are: 23rd March Pakistan Day, Pakistan Resolution Day, Pakistan Republic Day, 23 March Youm Pakistan

What was the Lahore Resolution or Pakistan Resolution? The 23 March 1940 Qarardad-e-Pakistan Fixes Upon Achieving An Independent State for Muslims

The Lahore Resolution or Pakistan Resolution (also known as Qarardad-e-Pakistan) was a political resolution or declaration drawn up by the 25-member Working Committee of the All India Muslim League from 22 March 1940 to 24 March 1940, which was then formally adopted at the Lahore general sitting on 23 March 1940 by the Muslim League members.

In this resolution, the Muslim majority states such as Punjab, Bengal, Sindh, ( NWFP ) within British India called for greater Muslim autonomy. Later, it was considered by most to be a call for a separate Muslim-majority State, Pakistan.

The session took place at Lahore’s Minto Park (now called the Iqbal Park). The park was jam-packed by the people, who were eagerly waiting for Muhammad Ali Jinnah to read his speech. A historical speech was delivered by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah . The Quaid told the events of the last few months during his two-hour Presidential address in English:

“Hindus and Muslims are part of two different religious philosophies, social and literary customs. They do not marry or intermarry and, indeed, they belong to two cultures and civilizations that are primarily based on ideas and conceptions that are mutually incompatible. They have different concepts of life. Hindus and Muslims are clearly inspired by different historical sources. They have different heroes and different episodes. The one hero is quite often the enemy of the other and their victories and defeats also overlap. The two nations that are under one state together must lead to increasing discontent and final destruction of any fabric which may be built for the administration of a state such as one as a numerical minority and the other as a majority.”

He further said:

“The Mussalmans are a nation in any definition of nationhood. We want our people to develop their spiritual, cultural, economic, social, and political lives to the fullest extent possible in the manner which they believe best and in line with their own ideas and visionary.”

Maulvi A.K. Fazlul Huq, on the instructions of the Working Committee , presented the resolution in Minto Park. The Pakistan Resolution Working Committee consisted of 25 members:

Muhammad Ali Jinnah , Liaquat Ali Khan, Sikandar Hayat Khan, Shahnawaz Khan Mamdot, Amir Ahmed Khan Raja Sahib of Mahmudabad, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, Sir Abdullah Haroon, Al-Hajj Sir Khawaja Nazimuddin, Amjadi Bano Begum, Maulana Muhammad Akram Khan, Chaudhry Khaliquzzaman, Nawab Muhammad Ismail Khan, Sir Currimbhoy Ebrahim, Ali Muhammad Khan Dehlvi, Qazi Muhammad Isa, Sardar Aurangzeb Khan, Abdul Mateen Chauhdry, Ashiq Mohamed Warsi, Haji Abdus Sattar Essak Saith, S.M. Sharif, Syed Abdul Rauf Shah, Mohammad Latif ur Rahman, Abdul Rehman Siddiqui, Malik Barkat Ali, Sadullah Khan Umarzai

The Resolution reads as:

“No constitutional arrangement would be serviceable or adequate to the Muslims except if land bordering units are separated into areas which should be so comprised with such regional rearrangements as might be essential. That the zones in which the Muslims are numerically in dominant part as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to comprise independent states in which the constituent units will be independent and sovereign.”

The aims of the Muslim League were increasingly focused on the achievement of an independent Muslim nation-state from the declaration in this 23 March 1940 Resolution .

In any event, the 23rd March Lahore Resolution of the Muslim League, commonly referred to as the Pakistan resolution, changed the dynamics of Indian history and left a profound influence on world history. The Muslims of the subcontinent drastically changed their demand from the “ Separate Electorates ” to the “Separate State” in the passage of this resolution. This resolution turned down the concept of a United India as its ultimate objective was to create an independent Islamic State. In seven years of struggle, the Quaid’s dynamic leadership and its followers ‘ commitment and passion enabled them to achieve an independent state, today called Pakistan.

What is Pakistan Republic Day? Pakistan Becomes The World’s First Islamic Republic on 23 March 1956

While 23 March Pakistan Day is mainly focused on commemorating the passing of the Lahore Resolution, the day also honors the transition of Pakistan from Dominion to the Islamic Republic.

After Pakistan was formed in 1947, the country celebrated Pakistan Independence Day every year on August 14. Although Pakistan has won its independence, it still has the status of ‘ Dominion , ‘ one of the British Commonwealth’s self-governing territories.

The cabinet, for example, had the right to appoint the governor-general or Prime Minister, but the Queen of the United Kingdom would give formal approval.

Elizabeth II Queen of the United Kingdom

It was on 23 March 1956, when Pakistan became a republic, breaking the official relationship with Britain . The day marked the transition of Pakistan from Dominion to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. So this is why Pakistan Day is also called Pakistan Republic Day.

23 March: Resolution Day, SMS, Poetry, Speeches & Parade

Photo of Shakila Nasreen

23rd March is celebrated with great enthusiasm as a Pakistan Resolution Day or simply Lahore Resolution Day across the land. It is also remembered as “Qarardad-e-Lahore in history. Since Pakistan does not officially publish the Lahore Resolution on 23rd March in the newspapers many people are unaware of its importance. Many people still do not know what was proposed on this day by the Muslim League. Let me explain it in detail.

On the same day, the Muslims from all over British India gathered at Manto Park Lahore where you can see Minar-e-Pakistan today. The then Manto Park witnessed a huge gathering of Muslims for the demand of a separate homeland for a free life. All the members of Muslim League gathered here under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam for neck or nothing.

The Muslims passed a resolution on 23rd March 1940 at Manto Park Lahore, and the Resolution was, “The democratic systems working in England where homogeneous nation lives are not applicable to a heterogeneous society like India. It is admitted that In India, there are various nations. The Muslims are not safe here, and a separate homeland for their survival is unavoidable. So, the constitution must be evolved as India is vast enough to be divided into two parts. The Muslims constitute a big minority, and they are in large number to constitute a nation.”

The British rulers and Congress felt the power of Muslims, and finally, Pakistan came into existence on 14th August 1947. It is a great blessing of God that we are living a free life. So, let’s celebrate Pakistan Resolution Day with enthusiasm to show the world our passion for Pakistan being united today.

How to Ace Your Business Presentation in English

young woman giving a presentation to coworkers in 2021 08 27 11 10 39 utc

So, you need to make a business presentation in English.

First of all, congratulations! To be in your position, you must have invested a huge amount of time and effort in your English language skills. You should be proud.

That said, we totally understand that giving a presentation in a second language can be a challenge. You may be worried that your audience won’t understand your accent. Perhaps you are wondering whether you need to use specific vocabulary. Maybe you’re not sure how best to handle questions from your audience.

If this sounds like you, don’t worry. In this post, we’re going to run through our top tips for acing your business presentation in English. Even if you’ve already made a few presentations in the language, we’re sure you’ll find these suggestions helpful.

So, read on to learn more. And before we start, let us wish you the very best of luck in delivering your next presentation.

Understand your audience

As with all forms of communication, it’s vital that you understand who your audience is. Even in the business world, you can find yourself speaking to very different groups of people.

For example, if you are giving a presentation to members of another company, you would certainly be more formal than when you give a presentation to members of your own team. In each case, you need to think about what your audience will expect from your presentation.

So, before you write a word, ask yourself these questions about your audience. Who are they? What interests them? What do they need to know? What do you want them to do as a result of your presentation?

One useful tip for writing your presentation is to imagine your audience is a single person. It’s easier to write convincingly if you have a single person in mind. Try it!

Mind your language

Most audiences will expect you to give your presentation using formal Business English . Don’t make the mistake of confusing Business English with business jargon .

Successful Business English uses language that is simple, direct, professional and easy to understand. Business jargon on the other hand, relies on obscure phrases, clichés, and acronyms. In many cases, business jargon is complex, not very precise and a barrier to good communication .

We have some useful resources on Business English on this page . However, if in doubt, keep the language of your presentation as simple and clear as possible. It’s also a good idea to use sentences with the active, rather than the passive voice. This allows you to use fewer words, which makes your sentences shorter and more engaging.

To give an example, this is a sentence in the passive voice:

The interview was failed by over one third of applicants.

Now compare this sentence, which is in the active voice.

Over one-third of applicants failed the interview.

To learn more about the active and the passive voice, check out this explainer from the British Council.

Practise, practise, practise

If English isn’t your first language, it’s more important than ever to practise your presentation before delivering it. By practising, you’ll feel more comfortable using English in a business setting. You’ll be able to work on any words or phrases you find difficult to pronounce, or you can change them to words or phrases you are more comfortable with.

Ideally, you should practise giving your presentation in front of someone else. That way you can get useful feedback on what works well, and what doesn’t. If that’s not possible, make a video of yourself giving your presentation. When you see yourself on screen, it will give you helpful insights into ways you can improve your delivery.

Don’t forget to introduce yourself

It may sound obvious, but don’t forget to introduce yourself at the very beginning of your presentation. It not only breaks the ice , but it’s an opportunity to get the audience on your side. If you are presenting to native English speakers, you may wish to tell them that English is not your first language – but don’t apologise for it! If anything, your audience will be impressed that you can give a presentation in a second language.

Have a clear structure

When people learn to teach in the UK, they are often told to structure their lessons in this simple way:

  • Say what you’re going to say
  • Say what you’ve said

In other words, introduce the session by explaining what you intend to talk about. This sets the audience’s expectations – they know what’s going to happen.

You then use main part of the session to make your presentation. There are many effective ways of doing this, and we’ll cover some of these soon.

Finally, finish by summarising the most important points of your presentation. This helps your audience to remember them clearly.

One other tip, if you plan to let the audience ask questions, it’s a good idea to tell them you’d prefer to answer them at the end of the presentation. This will discourage them from interrupting your presentation at the wrong moment.

Use storytelling

People love stories. If you can capture your audience’s imagination with a story, you can make a very powerful impression.

For example, imagine you are giving a presentation about how to commission new advertisements for your company. You want to make the point that good copywriting as just as important as good visual design.

You can either make your point directly, like this:

“Successful adverts rely on good writing as well as good design. If you change the wording of an advert, it can often result in extra sales – or fewer. Therefore, the words we choose are as important as the images we use.”.

Or you could begin with a story, like this:

“I want you to imagine it’s the year 1907. A man called Louis Victor Eytinge is in prison, convicted of murder. He’s a drug addict, suffering from tuberculosis. He’s unlikely to live, never mind get out of jail. Yet, by 1923 he walked free into a well-paid advertising job and a career as a Hollywood screenwriter. How? He had written his way to freedom. I want to use his story to show you why, if we want successful adverts, we need to commission powerful writing as well as good design.”

Which version of the presentation would you rather listen to?!

Remember pace and pitch

One useful tip for acing your business presentations in English is to vary the pace and pitch of your delivery.

While you don’t want to speak too fast, it’s a good idea to use a different pace for different parts of your presentation. For example, when you want to communicate a key point, speaking more slowly will help people understand that you think it is important.

Equally, it’s a good idea to vary the pitch of your voice. Try and keep this as natural as possible, but experiment with using a higher pitch when asking questions and a lower pitch when beginning your sentences. One good way to learn how to vary your pitch is to listen to UK news broadcasts – news presenters are expert at varying the tone of their voice to keep listeners interested.

Add a call to action

Most business presentations are given for a specific purpose. You may want to convince another company to work with you. Or you may want to convince your own firm to invest in a new kind of product. You may simply be explaining to colleagues how a new training scheme will work.

Whatever the purpose of your presentation, always remember to tell your audience what you want them to do. This is a ‘call to action’. Do you want your audience to email you their ideas? Or send you a funding proposal? Or arrange a meeting?

No matter what you need your audience to do, don’t forget to tell them. And at the very end, be sure to thank them for their time!

More business presentation tips

There are many other tips we could share with you on how to ace a business presentation in English. For example, it’s never a good idea to read your presentation from a piece of paper – it’s not engaging and it means you can’t easily make eye contact. It’s also tempting to rely too heavily on visual aids like PowerPoint, but if you get it wrong your audience will read your slides instead of listening to you. On the other hand, it can really engage an audience if you ask them to work together in small groups to share ideas or solve problems.

However you choose to make your presentation, if you prepare well, speak clearly and work hard to connect with your audience, you are very likely to succeed. And if you’d like to improve your presentation skills even further, why not try live online classes with English Online ? They can help you succeed in any career where using English is essential.

1. Structure

The general structure of a presentation is the following:

  • Introduction

It is up to you to design these three parts. Using videos or everyday-examples can be a great way to introduce the audience to the topic. The important thing is that you capture the audience's attention from the beginning by making an interesting introduction. The main part is where you present your topic, ideally divided into sections. You can be creative with it - incorporate images, videos, stories or interactive polls . We generally recommend using different kinds of elements, as that makes the presentation more lively. Make sure your main part is well structured, so your audience can follow. In the conclusion, you should give a short summary of the points you made without adding any new information. You can also make an appeal to your audience in the end.

2. Useful Phrases

Here you'll find several phrases that you'll need in every presentation. Of course, you should adapt them and use them in a context that is suitable for your setting. The phrases are divided into subcategories so you can find what you're looking for more easily.

Starting a presentation in english: methods and examples.

  • By Jake Pool

23 march presentation in english

If you’re going to make it in the professional world, most likely you’ll have to give a presentation in English at some point. No reason to get nervous!

Most of the work involved lies in the introduction. You may or may not need an English presentation PPT file, your topic, audience, or time limit may vary, but a strong opening is a must no matter what! Everything that follows can build from the opening outline you present to your audience.

Let’s look at some guidelines for starting a presentation in English. If you can master this part, you’ll never have to worry about the rest!

Opening in a Presentation in English

While it’s important to have your entire presentation organized and outlined, planning and organization are especially important in the introduction. This is what will guide you through a clear and concise beginning. Let’s look at how to start a presentation with well-organized thoughts .

Introduction Outline

  • Introduce yourself and welcome everyone.
  • State the purpose of your presentation
  • Give a short overview of the presentation

As we say, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. (No need for a more detailed English presentation script!) Let’s examine the first step.

1. Introduce Yourself & Welcome Everyone

The self-introduction is your opportunity to make a good first impression. Be sure to open with a warm welcome and use language that is familiar and natural. Based on your audience, there are a few different expressions you can use to start your presentation.

If you’re presenting to coworkers who may already know you:

  • Hello, [name] here. I would like to thank you all for your time. As you may know, I [describe what you do/your job title] I look forward to discussing [topic] today.
  • Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. Thank you for being here. For those who don’t know me, my name is [name], and for those who know me, hello again.

If you’re presenting to people you’ve never met:

  • Hello everyone, it’s nice to meet you all. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title].
  • Hello. Welcome to [event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title]. I’m glad you’re all here.

There are certainly more ways to make an introduction. However, it’s generally best to follow this format:

  • Start with a polite welcome and state your name.
  • Follow with your job title and/or the reason you’re qualified to speak on the topic being discussed.

2. State the Purpose of Your Presentation

Now that your audience knows who you are and your qualifications, you can state the purpose of your presentation. This is where you clarify to your audience what you’ll be talking about.

So, ask yourself, “ What do I want my audience to get from this presentation? ”

  • Do you want your audience to be informed?
  • Do you need something from your audience?
  • Do you want them to purchase a product?
  • Do you want them to do something for the community or your company?

With your goal in mind, you can create the next couple of lines of your presentation. Below are some examples of how to start.

  • Let me share with you…
  • I’d like to introduce you to [product or service]
  • Today I want to discuss…
  • I want to breakdown for you [topic]
  • Let’s discuss…
  • Today I will present the results of my research on [topic]
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll understand [topic]
  • My goal is to explain…
  • As you know, we’ll be talking about…

When talking about the purpose of your presentation, stick to your goals. You purpose statement should be only one to three sentences. That way, you can give your audience a clear sense of purpose that sets them up for the rest of the presentation.

3. A Short Overview of the Presentation

The final step in starting your presentation is to give a short outline of what you’ll be presenting. People like a map of what to expect from a presentation.

It helps them organize their thoughts and gives a sense of order. Also, it lets the audience know why they’re listening to you. This is what you’ll use to grab their attention, and help them stay focused throughout the presentation.

Here are some examples of how you can outline your presentation:

  • Today, I’m going to cover… Then we’ll talk about… Lastly, I’ll close on…
  • We’re going to be covering some key information you need to know, including…
  • My aim with this presentation is to get you to… To do that we’ll be talking about…
  • I’ve divided my presentation into [number] sections… [List the sections]
  • Over the next [length of your presentation] I’m going to discuss…

That’s it! It’s as simple as 1-2-3. If you have a fear of public speaking or are not confident about presenting to a group of people, follow these three steps. It’s a simple structure that can get you off to a good start. With that in mind, there are other ways to bring your introduction to the next level too! Read on for bonus tips on how to really engage your audience, beyond the basics.

For a Strong Presentation in English, Engage your Audience

Presentations aren’t everyone’s strongest ability, and that’s OK. If you’re newer to presenting in English, the steps above are the basics to getting started. Once you’re more comfortable with presenting, though, you can go a step further with some extra tricks that can really wow your audience.

Mastering the skill of engaging an audience will take experience. Fortunately, there are many famous speakers out there you can model for capturing attention. Also, there are some common techniques that English-speakers use to gain an audience’s attention.

*How and when you use these techniques in your introduction is at your discretion, as long as you cover the 3 steps of the introduction outline that we discussed earlier.*

Do or say something shocking.

The purpose of shocking your audience is to immediately engage them. You can make a loud noise and somehow relate the noise to your presentation. Or, you can say, “ Did you know that… ” and follow with a shocking story or statistic. Either way, the objective is to create surprise to draw their attention.

Tell a story

Telling a story related to your presentation is a great way to get the audience listening to you.

You can start by saying, “ On my way to [location] the other day… ” or “ On my way here, I was reminded of… ” and then follow with a story. A good story can make your presentation memorable.

Ask your audience to take part

Sometimes a good introduction that captures attention will involve asking for help from the audience. You can ask the audience to play a quick game or solve a puzzle that’s related to your presentation. Also, you could engage the audience with a group exercise. This is a great way to get people involved in your presentation.

There are many more ways to engage the audience, so get creative and see what you can think up! Here are some resources that will help you get started.

Also, if you want to get better at public speaking (and help your English speaking too!), a great organization to know about is the Toastmasters . The organization is dedicated to helping you be a better speaker, and there are many local groups in America. They offer free lessons and events to help you master your English speaking, and also offer additional help to paying members.

The Takeaway

A presentation in English? No problem, as long as your introduction sets you up for success . Admittedly, this can be easier said than done. Native speakers and non-native speakers alike sometimes struggle with getting a good start on their English presentation. But the advice above can help you get the confidence you need to lay a good foundation for your next speech !

EU ‘will not recognise changes to 1967 borders’ after Israeli confiscation of land

The European Union is “urging” Israel to reverse its illegal confiscation of more than 800 hectares (1,976 acres) of Palestinian land and declaring it Israeli state land.

“In line with its longstanding common position and UN Security Council Resolutions, the EU will not recognise changes to the 1967 borders unless agreed by the parties,” it said in a statement.

“This position goes hand in hand with the EU’s commitment to Israel’s security and to ensuring that the horrific attacks against Israeli civilians on 7 October will never be repeated. The EU is determined to fight such terrorism in word and deed, by continuously condemning Hamas in the strongest possible terms and through sanctions and other measures.”

“Settlement expansion runs counter to this objective. It fuels tensions and undermines prospects for a two-state solution, which remains the only sustainable guarantee for the long-term security of both Israelis and Palestinians,” the EU says as Israel continues to reject a two-state solution.

Confiscation of occupied land violates the international law. The EU will not recognise changes to the 1967 borders, including in Jerusalem, unless agreed by the parties. Such illegal actions only serve to fuel tensions & undermine Israel’s security, which the EU is committed to. https://t.co/TWQYgMAfZ9 — Josep Borrell Fontelles (@JosepBorrellF) March 24, 2024

UN relief chief condemns northern Gaza aid block with deadly implications

Martin Griffiths, the undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator at the UN, says he repeatedly urged Israel to lift all its restrictions on aid to Gaza, but it has now done the exact opposite.

“UNRWA is the beating heart of the humanitarian response in Gaza,” he said about the UN organisation for Palestinian refugees, which has now been told by Israel that its food convoys to northern Gaza will be blocked entirely despite the humanitarian disaster there.

“The decision to block its food convoys to the north only pushes thousands closer to famine. It must be revoked.”

UN special rapporteurs decry underreporting of sexual violence against Palestinians

As accounts of sexual violence against Palestinian women in Gaza are coming out, two women special rapporteurs of the UN say the issue is underreported and undervalued.

“Rape and other forms of sexual violence can constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity or a constitutive act with respect to genocide! It must stop!”

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, said, “I lost count of how many renowned journalists interviewed me on the alleged mistreatment of/sexual abuse against Palestinian women by Israeli forces, and never published any article on this”.

Israel has again placed restrictions on entry to the Islamic holy site during the holy month of Ramadan, drawing the criticism of Muslim leaders worldwide.

At least nine killed in Israeli strike on Deir el-Balah

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza and the Palestinian news agency Wafa are reporting that nine deaths resulted from an Israeli bombing of a house in the city, located in the central Strip.

A number of people are still trapped under the rubble of the destroyed house, local sources said, and even more were wounded in the strike.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has met with humanitarian staff working in dangerous conditions in the Gaza Strip.

“Some of them, with decades of experience, said they have never encountered a situation as difficult as this,” he wrote in a post on X.

“Aid workers need resources, access and safety – now.”

A record number of at least 168 members of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) have been killed by the Israeli military since the start of its war on Gaza.

Pro-Palestinian protesters flock to Israeli Embassy in Jordan

This video, verified by Al Jazeera Arabic, shows large crowds gathered at the Israeli Embassy in Jordan to express solidarity with Palestinians.

Macron warns Netanyahu that Rafah forced displacement would be ‘war crime’

French President Emmanuel Macron has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call that any forced transfer of people from Rafah in southern Gaza would constitute “a war crime”.

Macron also repeated his opposition to any Israeli military operation to fight Hamas in Rafah, where more than 1.5 million Palestinians have taken shelter, reports the AFP news agency.

Moreover, the French leader “strongly condemned” Israel’s announcement on Friday of the seizure of 800 hectares (1,978 acres) of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank for new settlements and the declaration that it was state land.

In the call, Macron told Netanyahu he intended to bring a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for “an immediate and lasting ceasefire” and also urged Israel to immediately open all land crossing points into Gaza for humanitarian aid.

Palestinian boy describes executions inside al-Shifa Hospital

Teenage Palestinian boy Farouk Mohammed Hamd tells Al Jazeera he witnessed Israeli soldiers executing a group of eight people, including his father and brother, inside al-Shifa Hospital.

He said he and the others were stripped of their clothing and moved several times inside the al-Shifa Hospital building in central Gaza over the course of hours before being taken to the top floor of the facility.

“They left us for about three hours, then they said, ‘You are safe. You can go south’,” he said.

“We stood up, but then they opened fire. We all laid down on the floor again. Then, the snipers entertained themselves by shooting us one after the other.”

He said his father told him before being killed to run away if he could, and he managed to run, but not before seeing the unresponsive bodies of the executed group.

Gallant says will meet senior US officials on US trip, discuss arms transfers

In comments issued to the media by his spokesperson, Israeli Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant says that he will meet the US secretary of defence, the secretary of state, the director of the CIA and the White House’s national security adviser.

Gallant is travelling to Washington today at the invitation of the US government, with which ties have become strained over Israel’s killing of civilians in Gaza and its blocking of humanitarian aid from entering the Gaza Strip.

“This visit will focus on preserving the qualitative military edge of the State of Israel, our ability to obtain platforms and munitions, our critical ties with the United States, and the importance of achieving our goals in Gaza,” Gallant said.

He added that Israel’s goals in Gaza are “defeating the Hamas organization, returning the hostages and ensuring Israel’s security needs as these relate to the Gaza Strip and Lebanon”.

Iran condemns al-Shifa raid, calls for fact-finding mission on sexual violence

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, has in a statement condemned the “inhumane and horrific crimes of the Zionist regime” at the al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza.

“The regime is adding another shameful chapter to the history of its miserable existence and the dark list of its crimes,” he said.

Kanaani also referred to reports of rape and killing of Palestinian women by Israeli soldiers in the area of the hospital, and called for “urgent and decisive action by the global community, including forming an international fact-finding mission to expose the volume of the war crimes of Zionists at al-Shifa Hospital”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran calls for effective, decisive and urgent action by governments and legal and international organisations to stop these crimes and to form criminal cases to prosecute and try the perpetrators, agents and supporters of this humanitarian catastrophe,” he said.

Former Israeli security official: Army cannot rescue all captives

Yossi Amrosi, an ex-senior official of Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security service, was quoted by local newspaper The Jerusalem Post as admitting that the Israeli army does not have the means to return all captives currently held in Gaza by Hamas and other Palestinian groups.

“We have already made contact and rescued hostages. In my estimation, there is some intelligence on different hostages, but we do not have the operational capability to carry out the operation and rescue them safely,” he told Radio North 104.5FM, according to the newspaper.

Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said at the start of the war that it had taken 250 captives during its October 7 incursion into Israel.

According to the Qassam Brigades, 50 captives have been killed in Israeli air raids. Israeli intelligence officers say 30 captives have died in Gaza so far since they were taken to the enclave.

The latest round of negotiations to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza war is ongoing, but reports are that progress has stalled, with Hamas saying today that Israel rejected its latest proposal to exchange the captives it holds for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Hamas says Israel ‘destroying all means of life’ in Gaza in hospital attacks

Hamas says in a statement that the Israeli military is systematically targeting hospitals across Gaza with the goal of displacing all Palestinians from their lands.

The Israeli military has imposed a week-long siege on the al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, and is now intensely attacking the al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis in the south. Hamas says Israeli military vehicles are moving toward Nasser Hospital, also in Khan Younis.

This, the group said, shows Israel wants to continue its “war of extermination” against Palestinians and forcibly displace them from their land “by destroying all means of life in the Gaza Strip, especially hospitals”.

Hamas called on Arab and Islamic nations, along with the global community, to support Palestinians in their plight, and said Palestinians’ determination to cling to their land and resist is only being strengthened.

Close-quarters combat ongoing around Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital

Both the Israeli military and Hamas are confirming another day of intense close-range combat in the vicinity of the besieged al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza.

The Israeli military released bodycam footage from its soldiers engaging in a firefight in a four-storey building near the hospital. It said they were shooting at a Palestinian fighter who was lobbing grenades at them.

The military wing of Hamas has also reported targeting Israeli soldiers and armoured vehicles in the vicinity of the hospital in the past few hours.

The Qassam Brigades said its fighters used an anti-armour shell to hit Israeli soldiers barricaded inside a building, inflicting casualties. It also claimed mortars were used to target soldiers, and said it achieved a hit on a military vehicle near al-Shifa.

Ground fighting is ongoing elsewhere across the Gaza Strip, with Hamas claiming hits on a Merkava tank and a D9 military bulldozer with Yassin-105 anti-tank shells northeast of Beit Hanoon in northern Gaza, and the Israeli army besieging the al-Amal Hospital in the south.

US official accuses Israel of ‘systematic’ sexual abuse of Palestinians: report

A senior US Department of State official has accused Israel of “systematic” sexual abuse of Palestinian women, an Israeli army general has said in an interview.

Brigadier General Amir Avivi said he was shocked when the person in charge of the Israel-Palestine file at the US State Department made this accusation during a meeting, reports the Jerusalem Post, citing a 103FM interview.

Avivi was quoted as saying, “This is absolutely disconnected from reality. But without hesitation, she said, ‘The UN presented evidence to the Israeli government. I told her, ‘Does it make sense that this phenomenon would exist and the media would never have reported on it?’ I wanted there to be greater awareness… about what is really happening in the US State Department.”

“When we meet with a State Department official holding the Israeli-Palestinian portfolio, every word she utters, as far as I’m concerned, is an official US position. Ultimately, she is a government official,” Avivi continued.

As we reported earlier, Al Jazeera has spoken with a woman living near the besieged al-Shifa Hospital who said Israeli soldiers are raping and killing Palestinian women in the area.

MSF: Bombing and clashes continue near al-Shifa Hospital

Doctors Without Borders, also known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF, has given an update on the situation at the Gaza City medical centre in a series of posts on X.

The group says its staff have reported “heavy air strikes by Israeli forces and fierce fighting” in the vicinity of the hospital, “endangering patients, medical staff and people trapped inside with very few supplies”.

It added that MSF staff in the area say that a mass-arrest campaign of medical staff and other people has been carried out by Israeli forces, and that the organisation is “deeply concerned” for the safety of those detained.

Israeli forces stormed the hospital last week on March 18 , beginning a siege that continues today. Among those arrested and detained were Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and his reporting team .

WHO chief says Israel must reverse decision on blocking north Gaza aid

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) says Israel must “urgently reverse” its decision to block the entry of food convoys organised by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) into northern Gaza, where humanitarian needs are most urgent.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in a post on X that this decision will lead to the deaths of more starving Palestinians in the northern part of the enclave.

“The levels of hunger are acute. All efforts to deliver food should not only be permitted, but there should be an immediate acceleration of food deliveries,” he said.

Blocking @UNRWA from delivering food is in fact denying starving people the ability to survive. This decision must be urgently reversed. The levels of hunger are acute. Clashes during Israeli raid on Azzun

Al Jazeera’s team in the occupied West Bank reports that Israeli forces began a raid on the village during iftar, when Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan break their daily fast, around 6pm local time (16:00GMT).

Our correspondents report that Palestinians targeted Israeli soldiers with locally made explosives, as confrontations broke out.

Azzun is near the city of Qalqilya in the West Bank.

Israeli military claims attacks on Hezbollah outposts

The Israeli military has released aerial footage of what it says are the latest attacks by its air force on Hezbollah outposts in southern Lebanon.

The army said it attacked a “military structure” in the Aita al-Shaab area, and another structure in the Odaisseh area, after its combat intelligence unit spotted operatives.

It also said it identified and shelled the source of missile and rocket fire against areas in northern Israel, and targeted areas in southern Lebanon to “remove threats”.

Gantz threatens to quit Israeli government

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has been quoted by local media as saying he will quit if a new law on army conscription passes in its current form.

The bill, favoured by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, would exempt ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews from military service in the country.

Gantz has been pushing for a law to draft this community into the Israeli army.
