Just as Hollywood seemed to be recovering from its pandemic woes, the industry had to contend with both a WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which caused production delays and shifted big release dates. But we’ve finally moved past that, and 2024 is nigh upon us, bringing with it exciting superhero movies, a highly anticipated musical adaptation, George Miller’s return to Mad Max , a third Avatar , and much, much, more. See below for the movies we’re most looking forward to in 2024, and check back regularly as we make more updates to the list!

Mean Girls (2024)

Though it may look like a remake of the 2004 comedy, this new interpretation isn’t quite that. Written by Tina Fey (who also wrote the original and makes an appearance in this film), this is an adaptation of the stage musical Mean Girls , which was itself an adaptation of the original film. Angourie Rice plays new girl Cady Heron, while Reneé Rapp takes on the role of head Mean Girl Regina George.

Argylle (2024)

Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn returns to the world of cheeky spies with this action comedy about a novelist (Bryce Dallas Howard) who draws the attention of an underground crime syndicate when the plots of her espionage novels uncannily mirror their activities. It’s up to an undercover spy (Sam Rockwell) to save her and her cat.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

Juno and Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody is also behind the script for this ’90s twist on the classic Mary Shelley horror story. Kathryn Newton ( Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ) stars as a misunderstood teen named Lisa whose crush is the young man from the Victorian era who happens to be buried in the cemetery behind her family’s home. That young man is mysteriously brought back to life, and the two embark on unlikely romance.

Bob Marley: One Love (2024)

Coming off an appearance in last year’s Barbie , One Night in Miami star Kingsley Ben-Adir headlines this biopic about the legendary reggae superstar directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, whose last biographical film, King Richard , earned six Oscar nominations and a Best Actor win for Will Smith. The film looks to be a fairly complete look at the singer’s life, including his rise to fame and his death.

Madame Web (2024)

Sony’s “Spider-Man Movie Franchise (Without Spider-Man)” has had highs ( Venom ) and lows ( Morbius ), but Madame Web , which stars Dakota Johnson as the clairvoyant Spidey side character, might be worth sticking around for, even if Peter Parker himself never shows up. Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet co-star.

Drive-Away Dolls (2024)

After Joel Coen went solo for the first time with 2019’s Macbeth , Ethan Coen is now following suit with his own solo directorial effort. This road comedy follows a pair of friends played by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan whose road trip to Tallahassee is disrupted when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.

Stopmotion (2023)

For anyone bemoaning the lack of original horror films — which, by the way, we think you can find if you look for them — we have this gem that originally premiered at last year’s Fantastic Fest. Directed by Robert Morgan, who co-wrote the script with Robin King, the film centers on a stop-motion animator who suddenly becomes obsessed with her latest film when a neighbor suggests the addition of a monstrous new character.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

Directed by: Denis Villeneuve Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård Opening on: March 1, 2024

The first installment’s day-and-date release on HBO Max initially put this sequel into question, but WB thankfully saw fit to give Denis Villeneuve the green light. Part Two sees big names like Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken join the cast as Villeneuve tells the second half of Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi novel.

Imaginary (2024)

Directed by: Jeff Wadlow Starring: DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcon, Betty Buckley Opening on: March 8, 2024

This original horror film from Blumhouse centers on a woman (DeWanda Wise) who moves back into her childhood home with her family, only to discover her stepdaughter (Pyper Braun) has become attached to a stuffed bear she found in the basement that compels her to engage in increasingly dangerous games.

Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda series is quietly incredible, taking what could have been a silly premise (Jack Black voices a fat panda who does martial arts) and turning it into something funny, heartfelt, and full of impressive fight scenes. At CinemaCon 2023, we learned that Mike Mitchell ( Trolls , The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part ) would be directing the film, and that the story would follow Po as he faces off against a chameleon foe and searches for a new Dragon Warrior.

Road House (2024)

The 1989 Patrick Swayze action drama Road House is an undeniable cult classic, but director Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal are putting their own spin on it. Gyllenhaal stars in the updated version as Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who takes up a job at a roadhouse (of course) in coastal Florida and gets mixed up with all the wrong people. Will any throats be ripped? Only time will tell.

Arthur the King (2024)

Mark Wahlberg stars in this remarkable based-on-true-events story about a man who befriends a stray dog during his journey to win the Adventure Racing World Championship, a treacherous 435-mile endurance race through the Dominican Republic.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

We don’t have a lot of confirmed details about this sequel, except that director Jason Reitman has been replaced by Gil Kenan (Monster House , Poltergeist 2015), who co-wrote Afterlife . We also know that stars Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd are returning, joined by names like Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt. And lastly, we also know that the film’s setting will indeed be New York and the firehouse from the original films, which was teased at the end of Afterlife .

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)

The two greatest kaiju of all time are back for round two in the follow-up to the Monsterverse’s 2021 showdown. However, the synopsis suggests that they might be allies from the start rather than enemies this time around, as Godzilla and Kong will face “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world.” Dan Stevens has been cast as the lead of the film, alongside returning GvK actors Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle. Adam Wingard, who directed the previous bout, will be behind the camera for this one, too.

Monkey Man (2024)

If the poster for Monkey Man makes it look a bit like a horror film, you might be surprised to learn that it’s actually a John Wick -styled action thriller set in Mumbai. Not only that, but it marks Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut (he also co-wrote it), and he stars in the film as an underground bare knuckle fighter who embarks on a vengeful rampage through the city’s corrupt underbelly.

Civil War (2024)

Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina , Annihilation ) fourth film sees the United States plunged into, well, a civil war. The film’s official description calls it a “race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge,” and the trailer showcases a number of provocative images, so get ready for this one to be controversial, even if we can all agree that Nick Offerman would make a great president.

Abigail (2024)

If you enjoyed 2019’s Ready or Not or the recent Scream films, then this one might be for you, because the directorial duo behind those films is also at the helm of Abigail . Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens are among the cast who play a ragtag group of criminals who are tasked with watching over a kidnapped 12-year-old ballerina, the daughter of an underworld kingpin, for one night. The twist? That little girl is a vampire.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

The next Guy Ritchie joint sees the director reuniting with his The Man from U.N.C.L.E. star Henry Cavill (and, incidentally, The Gentlemen star Henry Golding), who leads an ensemble cast in a spy action comedy inspired by true events. The story centers on a secret military organization created by Winston Churchill in World War II to battle the Nazis — think Inglourious Basterds , but real. Ritchie has taken the serious route with a couple of his recent films, but this looks like a return to his snarkier fare.

Challengers (2024)

Zendaya headlines the latest film from Luca Guadagnino, which centers on the relationships between a tennis prodigy-turned-coach (Zendaya), the struggling former champion who is her husband (Mike Faist), and his former best friend (Josh O’Connor) — who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend.

The Fall Guy (2024)

Is there a better action director than David Leitch these days? Leitch, a former stuntman who previously helmed John Wick , Atomic Blonde , Deadpool 2 , and Hobbs & Shaw , is tackling a film adaptation of an ‘80s TV show about a stuntman who moonlights as a bounty hunter. Sounds right up his alley. Ryan Gosling will play the lead alongside Emily Blunt.

Back to Black (2024)

This biopic of jazz singer-turned pop star Amy Winehouse traces her life and rise to fame leading up to the release of her studio album, Back to Black . Sam Taylor-Johnson ( Fifty Shades of Grey ) directs the film, which stars Marisa Abela of HBO’s Industry as the troubled singer.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

Caesar, the chimpanzee who led the apes to world domination, died at the end of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes , the third film in the reboot trilogy of the classic sci-fi franchise. However, there’s more monkey business to be had. (Yes, apes and monkeys are different, but let us have this.) Wes Ball, who helmed the Maze Runner films, directs the fourth film in the series, which takes place many years after the events of War.

John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds — both of whom also star in this film, by the way — developed this fantasy comedy also written by Krasinski about a young girl who learns she has the ability to see Imaginary Friends (hence the title IF ) that have been abandoned. Reynolds and Krasinski are joined by massive voice cast (presumably for those imaginary friends) that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon, Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Awkwafina, and more.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Anya Taylor-Joy will play a younger version of the war rig-driving badass Imperator Furiosa in this prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road , one of the best films of the century so far. George Miller will, naturally, direct once more, and Chris Hemsworth will co-star in the movie, which tells the tale of Furiosa’s kidnapping and her rise through Immortan Joe’s ranks.

The Garfield Movie (2024)

After Chris Pratt voiced Mario, he wept, for there were no more animated characters to conquer. Just kidding! He’ll be voicing everybody’s favorite lasagna-loving, Monday-hating cat, Garfield, in a new movie adaptation of the long-running comic strip. Samuel L. Jackson will voice Vic, Garfield’s father. Sure! Okay!

The Crow (2024)

When the John Wick spin-off Ballerina moved out of this release date, Lionsgate moved its The Crow reboot into its place. Based on the same comic book series as the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee (who famously died during filming), this new iteration stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven aka The Crow, and it’s directed by Rupert Sanders, who previously helmed Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell .

Hit Man (2023)

Based on a 2001 article in Texas Monthly , this action comedy from Richard Linklater stars Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick , Anyone but You ) as undercover police officer in Houston, TX posing as a hitman who breaks protocol to help a woman stuck in an abusive marriage.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)

If the third film in the Bad Boys franchise had gotten a different title, then this fourth installment could have easily been named Bad Boys 4 Life . But that’s not how reality works, so for now, we’ll just call this one Bad Boys 4 , which will see detectives Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) reunite for another explosive action-adventure.

Inside Out 2 (2024)

The wonderful Pixar film Inside Out showed us what things are like inside of an emotional young girl’s head. How do you raise the stakes for the sequel? Go inside a teenager’s head, of course. Inside Out 2 will revisit Riley now that she’s in college, and it will fittingly introduce a host of new emotions. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black return to reprise their roles, though Bill Hader’s Fear and Mindy Kaling’s Disgust have now been replaced by Tony Hale and Liza Lapira, respectively.

The Bikeriders (2023)

After being pulled from the 2023 release schedule due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Jeff Nichols’ period drama switched hands from 20th Century Studios to Focus Features and earned a new release date in the summer of 2024. Inspired by the 1967 photobook of the same name, the fictional story chronicles the rise of a Chicago motorcycle club over the course of a decade through the lens of its members.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

With the thrilling exception of the second movie’s opening scene, the action in the A Quiet Place franchise has taken place after the super-hearing, super-deadly aliens have already invaded and destroyed society as we know it. As the title here implies, the third film in the series will show the first days of the alien attack, well before anybody knows what’s going on or what to expect from these monsters, and it will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, who gave us one of Nicolas Cage’s best performances ever in 2021’s Pig . While most of the cast announced so far are new, we will see the return of Djimon Hounsou’s character from Part II .

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)

Axel Foley is back! It’s been almost 30 years since 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III , but Eddie Murphy doesn’t look like he’s missed a beat as the Detroit cop who returns to Los Angeles to investigate corruption after the death of an old friend. Franchise stalwarts like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot also return, alongside Taylour Paige, who plays Axel’s daughter, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Despicable Me 4 (2024)

Don’t forget which master the Minions serve. Coming two years after the last installment in the franchise, the spin-off Minions: The Rise of Gru , Despicable Me returns to the mainline series, with Gru and his family — including a baby Gru Jr. — squaring off against an enemy out for revenge voiced by Will Ferrell.

Longlegs (2024)

Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage star in this horror thriller about an FBI agent (Monroe) on the trail of a serial killer who discovers links not only to the occult but also to her own family and must act quickly to prevent another tragedy. It comes courtesy of Oz Perkins, best known for The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel and Hansel .

Twisters (2024)

Originally planned as a remake of the 1996 disaster movie Twister , Twisters eventually took form as a sequel, though it’s being called a “new chapter” and it isn’t clear if it will have any connection to its predecessor. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung makes the leap from indie drama to summer blockbuster, with Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos set to star.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

The Merc With a Mouth is back — and so is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine? The first Deadpool movie since Disney bought Fox will certainly be a sight to behold, as the Ryan Reynolds-led franchise is beloved for its R-rated humor. How that will blend with the MCU’s decidedly PG-13 tone is a mystery, as is how and why Jackman has returned as Wolverine, though the trailer does reveal the involvment of the TVA (as seen in Loki ), so that may be a hint.

Borderlands (2024)

Get ready for some outer space shenanigans as Eli Roth takes the helm for this adaptation of the popular and wacky video game series. The cast includes big names like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, and the film was written by Craig Mazin, who recently helped make a hit out of another acclaimed video game franchise, The Last of Us .

Speak No Evil (2024)

James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis star in this remake of the 2022 Danish psychological thriller about a married couple with kids who meet another family on vacation, accept an invitation to visit their home later, and begin to sense increasingly undertones lurking behind the hospitality of their hosts. The film is directed by James Watkins, who gave us the similarly disturbing Eden Lake , as well as The Woman in Black and one of the darker episodes of Black Mirror , “Shut Up and Dance.”

Alien: Romulus (2024)

The new film comes from Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez and will follow “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Kraven the Hunter (2024)

Originally set to appear sometime in the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man franchise before it was discontinued by Sony, the classic Spidey villain finally makes the jump to the big screen. The film will be directed by J.C. Chandor ( All Is Lost , Triple Frontier ), with Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who portrayed Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron ) set to play the character.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Tim Burton reteams with Michael Keaton to return to one of his early iconic characters in this sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice . Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are also both on board to reprise their characters Lydia and Delia Deetz, while Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia’s daughter.

Transformers One (2024)

The Transformers franchise returns to its roots with an animated prequel that explores the origins of the titular robots’ home world of Cybertron and the rivalry between Optimus Prime and Megatron. It will be separate from the ongoing narrative of the live-action films, and it will be helmed by Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley, with Chris Hemsworth as the voice of Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron.

Untitled Saw Sequel (2024) Directed by: TBA Starring: TBA Opening on: September 27, 2024

While we don’t know much about it yet, other than its release date, we do know that we will be getting a new chapter in the Saw franchise on September 27, 2024. Will it somehow follow the events of Saw X ? Maybe it will serve as a continuation of Spiral: From the Book of Saw ? We’ll have to wait and see for more details.

Terrifier 3 (2024)

We don’t know much about the third installment of the cult favorite horror franchise Terrifier , but we do know that David Howard Thornton will return to play Art the Clown and that the film will be set on Christmas Eve. The budget is also reportedly much larger than the previous two films, so fans can look forward to upgraded production value.

Wolf Man (2025)

It’s still a bit early to speculate too much about this film, but Universal’s next classic monster reboot comes courtesy of the director who brought us the surprise 2020 hit The Invisible Man , namely Leigh Whannell. We do know that Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott have signed on to star, but that’s about it. If Whannell can bring the same kind of flair that made The Invisible Man a runaway success, we can expect good things.

Venom 3 (2024)

Tom Hardy returns for this third installment of the Spider-Man-adjacent antihero franchise, centering on a San Francisco reporter possessed by an alien symbiote. Writer Kelly Marcel steps in behind the camera for this one, whose plot we really don’t know much about yet.

Gladiator 2 (2024)

Ridley Scott returns to direct this sequel to the historical epic Gladiator . The story will reportedly revolve around a grown-up Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), who has become emperor, and will see the return of Connie Nielsen as Lucilla.

Moana 2 (2024)

Disney made an unexpected announcement in February that a sequel to their hit 2016 animated film Moana , featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, would be releasing in theaters in November. The announcement gave us the name of the director, Dave Derrick Jr., who previously worked on films like How to Train Your Dragon , Megamind , and other Disney projects like Raya and the Last Dragon , Encanto , and of course the first Moana , and while no cast has been officially announced yet, we can expect Cravalho and Johnson to return as Moana and Maui.

Wicked (2024)

The legendary Broadway musical that tells the tale of the Wicked Witch of the West from a different perspective is getting a two-part film adaptation. Director Jon M. Chu ( Crazy Rich Asians , In the Heights ) will take audiences to Oz, while Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.

Untitled Karate Kid Movie (2024) Directed by: Jonathan Entwhistle Starring: Jackie Chan, Ming-Na Wen, Joshua Jackson, Ralph Macchio Opening on: December 13, 2024

The popular Netflix series Cobra Kai has helped keep the iconic ‘80s martial arts franchise alive and kicking in the popular consciousness, and in 2024 Sony will head back to the IP dojo with a new installment. Originally thought to be unconnected to the original films or the Netflix show, a casting call announcement revealed that Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan would star alongside each other in the new film as their characters Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han. Few other details have been revealed.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024)

Warner Bros. latest film in the Lord of the Rings universe is this animated prequel that follows the exploits of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary king of Rohan, home of the horsemen known as the Rohirrim that played a big part in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers . Brian Cox will lend his voice to the central character, who reigned 183 years before the events of The Two Towers , while the latter film’s Miranda Otto reprises her role as Eowyn, who will serve as a framing device for the story.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

The “live-action” Lion King (which was 100 percent computer-generated and not actually live action, to be clear) is getting a prequel that will explore the backstory of Simba’s father, Mufasa. James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the original Lion King and the remake, will not voice this younger version of Mufasa, and instead Aaron Pierre will play the character. Kelvin Harrison Jr. will play Scar, who goes by Taka when the events of the film take place.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise is speeding right along with a third installment that will presumably bring back Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Jim Carrey, who played the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the first two movies, might sit this one out as he’s been talking about retiring from acting. But, there will be at least one foe giving Sonic a run for his money, as Sonic 2 teased a new villain, Shadow the Hedgehog, in its post-credits scene.

Nosferatu (2024)

Robert Eggers ( The Witch , The Lighthouse ) follows up his action epic The Northman with a passion project he’s been working on for years. This remake of the classic 1922 vampire film of the same name looks to follow a similar plot, centering on a young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) and the vampire (Bill Skarsgård) who is infatuated with her.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2024)

The 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the best superhero movies and one of the best animated movies to grace theaters in recent years, so it’s only natural that there would be a sequel. However, there were simply too many Spider-Men for just one movie, and the sequel was split into two films. 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse premiered to rave reviews and a monster opening weekend but ended on a cliffhanger for Miles Morales and his friends, which Beyond the Spider-Verse will look to conclude. The film was originally dated for a March opening in 2024, but was removed from the schedule amid industry strikes in 2023.

Biographical Movies Coming Soon to Netflix in 2023 & Beyond

All the biopics set to arrive in 2023 or are in development at Netflix for 2024 and beyond.

Biopics are all the rage this summer, with Oppenheimer topping the box office and they’ve historically done quite well on Netflix too. Netflix has a bunch of biopics on the way in 2023 and plenty more in development. Here’s a preview of Netflix’s upcoming slate of biopic movies.

We’ve been previewing Netflix’s slate all throughout 2023 and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the year. If you’re into your biopics, you may also be interested to see some of Netflix’s upcoming book adaptations .

Believe it or not, only one biopic has been released on Netflix so far in 2023, with that being True Spirit . The family movie is based on 16-year-old Jessica Watson, who dreamt of becoming the youngest person to sail worldwide.

The Indian production is inspired by the true story of one of the fastest female pacers in the history of world cricket, Jhulan Goswami. It charts her career as she moves up the ladder, despite the countless hindrances, to fulfill her only dream: to play cricket.

First look at Nyad on Netflix

This new biopic is based on the marathon swimmer Diana Nyad who became the first person at the age of 60 to do what’s dubbed the Everest of Swims.

At the time of publishing, the movie was rumored to be released on Netflix on November 3rd, following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Keep an eye on our Fall 2023 movie preview list for the latest .

Society of the Snow

Retelling the true events of a rugby team that was left stranded after their passenger flight crashed in the heart of the Andes, this Spanish movie is one of Netflix’s hopefuls for the upcoming awards season.

The movie is confirmed for a 2023 release following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

One of the biggest hopes Netflix has at the Oscars in 2024 is Maestro starring and directed by Bradley Cooper.

The biopic, set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, sets out to tell us the life story of Leonard Bernstein, an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian.

Another big movie Netflix hopes to scoop awards is Rustin , a highly-anticipated new movie from Higher Ground Productions recounting the gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin who organized the 1963 March on Washington.

The movie is confirmed to hit Netflix on November 17th, following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

More a biographical film than a biopic, this upcoming British-produced movie based on a screenplay by Peter Moffat looks at Prince Andrew and his interactions with the BBC that led to the stunning Newsnight interview that’s lived on in infamy.

Netflix Biopics Coming in 2024 or Beyond

First announced in August 2020 (with no significant updates since), this biopic would tell the story of Tanya Smith, who rose to become one of the single biggest threats to the US banking system in the late 20th century.

It’s based on the memoir that was renamed to Sheer Crazy Nerve and looked to be released in bookshops this summer (although we couldn’t quite find evidence of that happening).

Shirley Chisholm is the central figure that’s the focus of this new biopic starring Regina King, who also serves as a producer on the project.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Shirley is the intimate portrayal of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S, and the cost of accomplishment for Shirley herself. This film will tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best.”

Music biopics have exploded in recent years, with the biggest of the bunch being Rocketman about Elton John and Bohemian Rhapsody documenting Queen. Netflix’s biggest swing in the genre has been their 2019 movie The Dirt , looking into the history of Motley Crue.

This biopic (expected to release in 2024) will focus on Gene and Paul, the two kids from Queens who formed KISS and a life-long friendship after enlisting guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss.

From Korea, this movie tells the story of Cho Hun-hyun, a former Go champion who discovers a gifted but untrained young boy Lee Chang-ho in an amateur contest.

The movie was originally stated to be released on Netflix in 2023 , but we’ve yet to have confirmation that’s the case given that the release looks to be held off because of the involvement of Yoo Ah-in, who has been arrested on drug charges . It could be the case the movie never sees the light of day.

The Thanksgiving Text

Announced in early 2022 , this new movie is based on the real story of a grandma who accidentally invited a stranger to Thanksgiving, which soon became a heart-warming annual tradition.

State Street Pictures is producing the title with Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. with Abdul Williams writing.

Untitled Hulk Hogan Biopic

First announced in February 2019 , Chris Hemsworth was being lined up for a biopic where he’d play WWE superstar Hulk Hogan with Todd Phillips set to direct.

The latest we heard about the project was in 2022, when Chris Hemsworth provided a disappointing update about the project, saying he didn’t know where it was in development.

White Mountains

Still yet to be confirmed by Netflix itself is White Mountains, a new production from Higher Ground Productions (the production company founded and helmed by Barack and Michelle Obama).

Netflix picked up the script after it featured on The Blacklist with the movie retelling the story of Barney and Betty Hill who claim they were abducted by a UFO in the 1960s.

Rounding out the preview, here are a few more announced projects in the past, but we’ve had little to no information since:

Janet – From Janet Mock, this feature film was announced back in 2020 and would tell the story of a young black woman at the Washington Post and her ambitious and complicated quest to make the front page.
Tenzing – A feature film from Higher Ground Productions based on the life of Tenzing Norgay, the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
The Ice Bucket Challenge – Produced by Casey Affleck, this biopic would’ve looked into the activist behind the viral sensation.

The best 2021 biopics entertain you while also giving you a better sense of who a celebrity or historical person was in real life. Judas and the Black Messiah gives insight into the chairman of the Black Panther Party in the the late '60s as well as the FBI's plan to take him down. United States vs. Billie Holiday is another 2021 biographical film that shows a historical figure going toe to toe with an entity of the federal government. The 2024 new movie entry is an interesting narrative from the pop star as it is reflective of her personal healing and her much-talked-about journey to love. Again, with a narrative component to the story, J Lo fans will have to tune in to see how much of the movie is rooted in her own ups and downs in romance and how much is fictionalized for the project.

Leonard Bernstein

From A Star Is Born to Leonard Bernstein, Bradley Cooper is staying in the music genre for his next big directorial effort. The multi-hyphenate will direct and star in a Leonard Bernstein biopic , Maestro, about the conductor and composer behind West Side Story , Peter Pan , and more. Cooper co-writes the Netflix film with Josh Singer ( Spotlight ), while producing with, among others, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Carey Mulligan is set to co-star as Felicia Montealegre, wife of the iconic composer.

Timothée Chalamet is expected to play Bob Dylan in an as-yet-untitled film from Searchlight Pictures . Directed by James Mangold , the film takes place in 1965, when the folk legend made a controversial shift to rock & roll and the electric guitar. However, in an interview with Collider , cinematographer Phedon Papamichael revealed production is on hold due to COVID-19.

Boy George is yet another musical icon to get the Hollywood treatment, with MGM producing the biopic and Sacha Gervasi ( Anvil: The Story of Anvil ) writing and directing. The as-yet-untitled project will follow the singer (born George Alan O'Dowd) from his early years in England growing up in a working-class Irish family through his rise up the pop charts as part of the group Culture Club in the 1980s. Sophie Turner has said she'd like the part , with Boy George admitting, "When I was 17, I would have loved to have been her."

Marianne Faithfull

Lucy Boynton is trading one music biopic for another. After appearing in Bohemian Rhapsody , the British actor is set to executive produce and star as singer Marianne Faithfull in Faithfull , directed by Ian Bonhôte. Set in mid-1960s London, the movie will chronicle the highs and lows of Faithfull's career after being discovered as a convent schoolgirl at 17, becoming a pop idol, her tumultuous romance with Mick Jagger that inspired some of the Rolling Stones' greatest songs, and being a homeless drug addict in Soho. "I am delighted that my story is finally being made with my dream team of Lucy, [producer] Julia [Taylor-Stanley] and Ian," Faithfull said.

Michael Jackson

It should come as no surprise that Michael Jackson is finally getting the biopic treatment . Graham King, who produced the Oscar-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody , has acquired the rights to Jackson's music and is set to make a film based on the pop legend's life. Collaborating with King is screenwriter John Logan; the two previously worked together on Martin Scorsese's Howard Hughes biopic, The Aviator.

Graham King is a busy man—he's also developing a biopic about the Bee Gees along with Steven Spielberg . Once director John Carney will helm the currently untitled film, with a script by John Logan. The movie will likely follow the trio of brothers— Barry , Robin, and Maurice Gibb—and their journey from humble beginnings in 1958 to reaching global fame after working on the soundtrack for the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever , penning iconic tunes like "Stayin' Alive" and "More Than a Woman." Paramount and King purchased the life rights to the Gibb family estate, and thus will be able to use the group's biggest hits in the movie. Barry is the sole surviving member of the group, as Maurice and Robin died in 2003 and 2012.

Teddy Pendergrass

Six-time Grammy nominee Tyrese Gibson is taking on the life of R&B icon Teddy Pendergrass in a biopic written by Little Marvin, with Donald De Line ( Ready Player One ), Lee Daniels ( Precious ), and Gibson producing. Pendergrass' widow, Joan Pendergrass, is also on board as an executive producer. "This is the role that I feel I was born to play," Gibson said. "Teddy Pendergrass embraced me and, before he passed, put the responsibility on my shoulders to tell his story."

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

An adaptation of John Lennon and Yoko Ono 's epic love story has been in the works for years. The script was written by Bohemian Rhapsody scribe Anthony McCarten, while Ono herself was attached to produce. Jean-Marc Vallée ( Dallas Buyers Club ) had been expected to direct and edit before his death in 2021. There has been no other news about the project, but we still hope it will come together some day.

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse 's family announced back in 2018 that the iconic singer was getting a big-screen biopic, with proceeds from the film reportedly benefiting the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The Winehouse family will serve as executive producers on the film, Back to Black , which has been written by Matt Greenhalgh and will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson . "We now feel able to celebrate Amy's extraordinary life and talent," the singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, said. "We know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues."

Rapper Gucci Mane (real name: Radric Delantic Davis) is getting a biopic from Paramount Players and Imagine Entertainment, based on his memoir, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane . Imagine's Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will join Mane and Todd Moskowitz in producing the film about the trap house artist who started his career by releasing mixtapes while in prison.

Bob Marley is expected to be played by Kingsley Ben-Adir ( One Night in Miami ) in a new biopic about the reggae music trailblazer. The Jamaican singer-songwriter died of cancer in 1981, but in his short life he changed the legacy of reggae forever. Reinaldo Marcus Green ( King Richard ) will direct the biopic with input from the musician's son, Ziggy Marley.

Who better to make a movie about Madonna 's life than Madonna herself? The iconic singer is set to direct a biopic about her life, having co-written the script with a collaboration from Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody . The still-untitled Universal film is rumored to star Julia Garner in the lead role and will also be produced by Madonna and two-time Academy Award nominee Amy Pascal ( Little Women ). The film is expected to follow the entertainer's rise to prominence as the culture-shaping musician, actress, director, author, and entrepreneur she is today. Sara Zambreno and Madonna's longtime manager, Guy Oseary, are on board as executive producers as well.

Lemmy, a.k.a. Ian Fraser Kilmister, the lead singer of Motörhead who passed away in 2015 , is getting a biopic from someone who knew him well—Greg Olliver. The filmmaker spent several years with the band for their 2010 documentary, also titled Lemmy . The movie will follow Kilmister's early life in England, his time as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix, and the five years he spent with rock band Hawkwind before he went on to create Motörhead, forever changing the future of rock music. Motörhead's manager Todd Singerman and Steffan Chirazi will serve as executive producers for a screenplay written by Medeni Griffiths along with Olliver.

What's better than a biopic about an iconic female-led rock band? A biopic about an iconic female-led rock band written and directed by another iconic female rock star. Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein is set to write and direct a biopic on the rock band Heart for Amazon Studios. It was Heart guitarist Ann Wilson herself who revealed on SiriusXM's Volume West that "there's [a film] in the works" about her band, best known for late '70s and early '80s hits like "Crazy on You" and "Barracuda." Wilson added that she "saw the first draft of the script, it's really cool… The script started in childhood and ended up in the '90s." Casting is currently underway for the roles of Wilson and her sister, Nancy Wilson.

One of the best things about movies is their ability to be used as vessels for sharing stories that might otherwise be forgotten or even completely untold. When those stories are based on or feature the experiences of real life people, it becomes even more important to highlight those films, even if only to take a moment to recognize that a person's life is being served up to a wide, public audience. Biography films (or biopics) serve an important purpose in the industry, and to that end, here's seven biographical films to check out in 2020 .

The stories featured here vary wildly, ranging from a chronicle about the life of a legendary singer (Aretha Franklin in Respect ) to the story of an acid attack survivor in India (Laxmi Agarwal in Chhapaak ). The latter is especially noteworthy, as it features real acid attack survivors , according to Gulf News. While the story itself is quite important, it's almost equally as critical to highlight the fact that people who belong to these marginalized, "othered" groups should be allowed to tell their own stories, ideally by starring in films that purport to speak about them. That said, Deepika Padukone, the film's star, wore prosthetics to fit into her role . So while not an entirely unproblematic film, it still takes a step in the right direction by bringing in real survivors to help highlight their stories.

'Chhapaak' (Jan. 10)

Chhapaak is an Indian film based on the life and experiences of Laxmi Agarwal , an acid attack survivor and activist. In 2005, when Agarwal was a teenager, she rejected the advances of then-30-year-old Nadeem Khan, who then threw acid in her face, permanently scarring and altering it.

'The Last Full Measure' (Jan. 24)

The Last Full Measure boasts quite a few stars in its cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, Ed Harris, Bradley Whitford, and William Hurt. In it, Stan stars as Scott Huffman, a Pentagon staffer looking into the story of William H. Pitsenbarger , an Air Force Pararescueman who died in the Vietnam war after staying behind after medical evacuation to help assist soldiers during a sustained attack.

'I Still Believe' (Mar. 20)

K.J. Apa stars as Jeremy Camp, a Christian music recording artist whose wife, Melissa (Britt Robertson) is diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly before their marriage. Based on the real life Camp, the film chronicles his teenage years all the way up to him meeting his second wife, Adrienne (Abigail Cowen).

'The Trial of the Chicago 7' (Oct. 2)

The Chicago Seven were a group of anti-war activists who were arrested and charged with conspiracy and inciting riots amidst the 1968 Democratic National Convention. This movie tells the story of their trial and the events that transpired within the courtroom. Directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Trial of the Chicago 7 also stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Michael Keaton, and Mark Rylance.

'Respect' (Oct. 9)

Respect chronicles the life of legendary vocalist Aretha Franklin. Jennifer Hudson stars as the singer, and along for the ride are Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, and Mary J. Blige.

'King Richard' (Nov. 25)

King Richard is less about English royalty and more about modern day sports royalty. It follows the life of Richard Williams, father to tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, two of the best players in the game to date. The story will focus on how he raised the sisters and helped them along their sports careers. It stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, with Reinaldo Marcus Green attached to direct.

'Resistance' (2020)

Slated for release in 2020 with no specific date, Resistance tells the story of Marcel Marceau , a French actor and mime artist who also secretly worked for the French Resistance during World War II. Along with his brother, Alain, they saved children from being taken away to concentration camps, saving their lives. The film is directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Clémence Poésy, Ed Harris, and Edgar Ramirez.

Each of these entries displays the purpose of many biography films: to highlight the stories less told and to add insight and perspective where there may have been none before. They should all be an interesting watch, and who knows, there might even be an Oscar contender or two in the mix.

What music biopics are in the works? Here's a complete list of every music biopic that's already scheduled or currently in development.

Hollywood studios have several music biopic movies in development, and here are all the ones we know about. While musicals, music-themed movies, and music biopics are nothing new, it seems there's a new trend afoot, in which studios are starting to make music biopics a cornerstone of their yearly releases.

In 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody showcased Freddie Mercury and Queen, and it ended up grossing over $900 million at the worldwide box office. So while films like 8 Mile , Walk the Line , and Straight Outta Compton have dazzled audiences and critics in the past, there's been a big push into music biopics within the past year or two. Even the Elton John biopic/musical Rocketman became a box office hit in 2019, though that movie took a different approach to its subject.

Since high-profile music biopics make big money and lots of headlines, they're an ideal platform for up-and-coming stars as well as studios that want to diversify their lineup. Here's a complete list of music biopic movies that are either scheduled for release or currently in development.

Directed by Rupert Goold, Judy stars Renée Zellweger as the iconic singer and actress Judy Garland. Based on Peter Quilter’s book End of the Rainbow , the music biopic takes place in 1969 London. Jessie Buckley ( Chernobyl ), Rufus Sewell ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ), Michael Gambon ( Harry Potter ), and Bella Ramsey ( Game of Thrones ) have supporting roles. Judy will have a wide US release on September 27, and will come out on October 4 in the UK.

I Still Believe

Based on the hardships of Christian music singer Jeremy Camp, I Still Believe will star Riverdale actor K.J. Apa in the lead role. In 2000, Camp married Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp, who was subsequently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and passed away the following year. Britt Robertson will portray Camp’s late wife, and music superstar Shania Twain will co-star as the musician’s mother, Terry. I Still Believe , written by Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn, is scheduled for a March 20, 2020 release.

Based on the life story of American soul singer Aretha Franklin , Respect will star Jennifer Hudson in the lead role. Liesl Tommy will direct the music biopic, which was written by Callie Khouri - the screenwriter of the ‘90s classic Thelma & Louise and the creator of the television series Nashville . Respect is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to release in theaters on August 14, 2020.

Blue Moon Of Kentucky

Callie Khouri will also co-write the screenplay for a music biopic about bluegrass musician Bill Monroe. In 1997, Monroe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for influencing the genre as the “Father of Bluegrass.” Blue Moon of Kentucky is currently in development, and is based on a screenplay co-written by Finn Taylor and Khouri. However, it doesn't yet have a cast or director attached.

Untitled Elvis Presley Film

Baz Luhrmann will write and direct a music biopic about The King of Rock, Elvis Presley . In July 2019, Austin Butler was cast as Elvis for the Warner Bros. film. Tom Hanks has also been cast as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker . Luhrmann previously directed Moulin Rouge! , Australia , Romeo + Juliet , and The Great Gatsby , so he's coming into the Elvis biopic with considerable experience. Although an exact date hasn't been revealed, the Elvis biopic is scheduled to debut in 2021.

Directed by Unjoo Moon, the music biopic I Am Woman follows the life of Australian musician and activist Helen Reddy, who released the feminist anthem “I Am Woman” in May 1972. Tilda Cobham-Hervey will star in the title role, with Evan Peters portraying her husband and manager, Jeff Wald. Danielle Macdonald ( Bird Box ) co-stars as music journalist Lilian Roxon. I Am Woman ’s screenplay was written by Emma Jensen ( Mary Shelley ). A release date has not yet been set.

In May 2018, Bradley Cooper was announced as the star and director for Bernstein , a music biopic about composer Leonard Bernstein. The subject served as the music director for the New York Philharmonic, and also composed the scores for famous movies such as On the Waterfront and West Side Story . Bernstein marks Cooper's second feature film as director, following 2018's A Star Is Born . Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese will co-produce Bernstein, with Carey Mulligan co-starring alongside Cooper. Bernstein doesn’t yet have a release date.

Sony is currently developing Douglas McGrath’s book Beautiful: The Carole King Musical into a feature film. Although no developments have been made since 2015, including for the cast and director, Tom Hanks is reportedly attached to co-produce alongside Gary Goetzman. Beautiful will focus on King’s life and career.

The Power of Love (Famous)

Valérie Lemercier, a French actress and singer, will star in and direct the life story of Céline Dion. Considering Dion's career, there will certainly be a lot to focus on in the film. Lemercier has previously directed five feature films, and wrote the screenplay for the Dion music biopic. The Power of Love (Famous) will co-star Carole Weyers and Sylvain Marcel. A release date has not yet been set.

Starring Johnny Flynn as David Bowie , the music biopic Stardust will focus on the late English rock star. Stardust will take place in 1971 as Bowie travels to America and evolves into his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Jena Malone co-stars as Angie Bowie and Marc Maron appears as a publicist. Bowie’s son Duncan Jones has previously stated that none of his father’s music rights have been granted for Stardust , which means that the film could be a straight-forward drama. Stardust doesn't have a release date yet.

Blond Ambition

Despite Madonna’s reported disapproval, a biopic about her life is reportedly in development at Universal. Written by Elyse Hollander, Blond Ambition will explore the early years of Madonna’s music career and the making of her first album, but little information about the project has been announced. In 2017, Madonna herself posted a message on Instagram, stating (via Variety ) “Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool looking for instant gratification without doing the work. This is a disease in our society.” The post has since been removed.

Untitled Amy Winehouse Film

Producer Alison Owen will direct a music biopic about Amy Winehouse . In October 2018, Owen’s Monumental Pictures agreed to a deal with the late singer’s family. Winehouse tragically passed away at age 27 in 2011; this coming after she’d released two studio albums and won five Grammy Awards. The Winehouse music biopic will reportedly begin filming in 2019, but the cast has not been announced.

Untitled John Lennon And Yoko Ono Film

In 2018, Universal announced that Jean Marc Vallée would direct a music biopic about John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The project is reportedly still in active development, and it'll be based on a screenplay written by Anthony McCarten ( Bohemian Rhapsody ). Vallée is best known for directing the HBO series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects . He’s also directed feature films such as Dallas Buyers Club , Wild, and Demolition .

Untitled Bob Marley Film

In June 2018, Paramount announced that Ziggy Marley would produce a music biopic about his late father, the iconic reggae musician Bob Marley . The project is currently in development and still untitled. A director and cast have not been announced.

Untitled Boy George Film

MGM announced their plans for a Boy George biopic in May 2019. With Sacha Gervasi set to write and direct, the untitled Boy George film will explore the singer's early days in Ireland. Boy George aka George Alan O’Dowd formed the band Culture Club in 1981 and ultimately became a staple of ‘80s pop culture. From 1982 to 1986, Culture Club released four studio albums before disbanding. They later released an album in 1999 ( Don’t Mind If I Do ) and another, Life , in 2018. Boy George has released nine studio albums throughout his career.

Untitled Gucci Mane Film

Paramount announced a biopic about the hip-hop musician Gucci Mane in 2018. Based on The Autobiography of Gucci Mane , the film will follow Gucci Mane's upbringing in the American South and how he innovated the trap music genre before spending three years in prison. Gucci Mane is currently 39 years old and released his 14th studio album, Delusions of Grandeur , in June 2019.

Untitled Teddy Pendergrass Film

In February 2019, Warner Bros. announced that Tyrese Gibson would star in a music biopic about R&B musician Teddy Pendergrass . The film will follow the singer's rise to fame during the ‘70s, which preceded a tragic 1982 car accident that left him paralyzed. Lee Daniels will co-produce with Gibson and Pendergrass’ widow, Joan. From 1977 to 1997, Pendergrass released 13 solo albums. He passed away in 2010 at age 59.

The director Sam Mendes is working on four biopics about The Beatles .

Mendes, who's known for Oscar-winning films including “American Beauty,” “ Skyfall ,” and “1917,” has partnered with Sony to work on the ambitious slate of movies about the iconic British band.

In a press release announcing the news, Sony Pictures CEO Tim Rothman said: “Sam’s daring, large-scale idea is that and then some.”

Here’s everything we know about the four movies about The Beatles.

Each movie will focus on a different member of The Beatles

According to the press release, each movie will be from the perspective of a different member of the band, meaning Paul McCartney , John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr will each have their own biopic.

It’s the first time that the band’s company, Apple Corps Ltd., has given permission for the group’s life story and music to be used in a scripted film about them.

Since 1979, 18 unauthorized biopics have been made about the band including 2009’s “Knowhere Boy" starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lennon and Thomas Brodie-Sangster as McCartney.

Sam Mendes will have 'no limits' telling The Beatles’ story

In an interview with Deadline published on Tuesday, Pippa Harris, who will produce the films, said the band’s surviving members, McCartney and Starr, have given their blessing for Mendes to work on the four films.

“It’s a testament to his creative brilliance and powers of persuasion that Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon, and Olivia Harrison responded with such warmth and enthusiasm as soon as he spoke with them,” she said, referring to John Lennon's son and George Harrison's widow.

Harris went on to say that Mendes will have no restrictions on what he depicts from the band members’ lives.

She said: “What is truly exciting is for Sam to have the freedom to delve into the lives of each of the Beatles, with nothing off limits and no sense of the band wanting him to tell a particular ‘authorised’ version of their rise to success.”

Starr also gave his blessing on Tuesday via a post on X.

Nobody has been cast yet, but The Beatles movies should be released in 2027

Mendes is the only big name attached to all four movies as director, and no actors have been cast as Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, or Starr as of yet.

Per the press release, Sony is looking to release all four movies about The Beatles in 2027, which gives Mendes plenty of time to find the right people to play the Liverpudlian superstars.
