Glasgow Clinical Research Facility

Glasgow Clinical Research Facility (GCRF)  was established in 2006 as a small compact unit based at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) with funding provided from the Scottish Government via the  Chief Scientist Office .

We now boast state-of-the-art facilities at sites across the city, including the new £5million adult and paediatric Clinical Research Facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus, jointly run by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and the University of Glasgow.We have in-patient beds, clinical trial pharmacy, laboratory and bio-repository storage facilities.

The GCRF is integrated with outstanding imaging facilities within which CRF imaging staff work in partnership with those in the service and University.  The world-class calibre of these facilities is ensured by the imminent arrival of the 7T scanner one the most-powerful kind to be used within a clinical research setting.

The 8 original staff members staff have expanded to a team of 90 specialised multidisciplinary staff which support a portfolio of over 250 clinical research studies, ranging from complex early phase or novel technique experimental medicine to large population-based public health initiatives.

Clinical Research Fellow 

We have an opportunity for a Clinical Research Fellow.

The main purpose of this post is to advance virology research at the University of Glasgow through involvement in a collaborative and multidisciplinary project at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR). 

This post forms an essential part of the strategic expansion of virology research in the University and is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC). 

The position offers an excellent opportunity for skilled and motivated clinically qualified medical doctors, usually at internal medicine trainee (IMT), UK speciality trainee, or international equivalent level from any specialty, with an interest in infectious diseases or clinical virology to undertake a higher degree (PhD) and pursue an academic career.

Applicants must be at pre-consultant level, GMC registered at the time of starting the post, and be able to gain out-of-programme (OOP) approval.

This post is full time, fixed term for 3 years, with the proposed start date of 1 August 2024.

We have an exciting new vacancy for a Clinical Trials Medical Statistician!  

The purpose of this post is to conduct, present and publish clinical trial and epidemiological research in the discipline of medical statistics. Specifically, the post holder will work on multicentre international trials in heart failure in a group with extensive experience of running and analysing clinical trials. There is also a strong focus on epidemiological analyses, using routinely collected data from Scotland.  As part of a research group the post holder will conduct analyses of existing datasets and engage with the PIs in the BHF Centre of Research Excellence in Vascular Science and Medicine in helping manage existing data and designing new trials. The post will be jointly supervised by PIs from the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.

As a successful candidate you will undertake a fully-funded 3-year PhD. Your PhD will focus on research related to mechanistic and translational research into vascular and cardiovascular conditions of clinical relevance. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with outstanding researchers in vascular biology and associated clinical conditions. A detailed programme of work will be developed together with the future supervisors.

The BHF Research Excellence Award in Cardiovascular Science & Medicine aims to further expand its vascular research stream and particularly welcomes applications from candidates with an interest in aspects of vascular biology including but not limited to endothelial function, vascular remodeling and vascular fibrosis. The Centre strongly encourages candidates to develop, together with their supervisor, a translational research project with components of basic (discovery) and clinical science.

Glasgow Clinical Research Facility

The Glasgow Clinical Research Facility (GCRF) was established in 2006 with funding from the Scottish Government via the Chief Scientist Office. It provides state-of-the-art research space across several geographical sites including the £5million Clinical Research Facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus. 

The Service provided by the CRF embeds research into clinical practice, ensuring that clinical research is a cornerstone of patient-centred healthcare development.

Each research space provides high-quality clinical environments and outreach services where patients and healthy volunteers can take part in international clinical research studies.

Key Partners

Glasgow Health Science Partnership (GHSP)  is a joint initiative between the University of Glasgow and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GG&C).

GHSP   brings together the University and NHS GGC hospitals creating an integrated, interdisciplinary centre of excellence for the management and execution of both non-commercial and commercial clinical research. Part of GHSP, Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit provides specialist services from the GCRF, the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics , and the NHS GG&C Research and Innovation department.

The GCRF is a partner in the UK Clinical Research Facility Network (UKCRFN) and hosted the UKCRFN 2017 Conference.

The GCRF employs a team of multidisciplinary staff, supporting a portfolio of over 400 clinical research studies, ranging from complex early phase or novel technique experimental medicine and medical device studies to large population-based public health initiatives.
