AI resume builder FAQs

What is an ai resume builder.

An AI resume builder is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to assist users in creating their resumes. These tools often have features like customized templates, content suggestions, optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), custom tailoring, feedback, and revision options.

What features does Enhancv’s AI resume builder offer?

Enhancv offers a range of AI features to help you create your resume with ease:

  • Templates and customization: AI resume builders typically offer a variety of templates that users can choose from. These templates are designed to be both visually appealing and to meet the standards expected in different industries.
  • ChatGPT-powered resume content writing and suggestions: Enhancv suggests content based on your input. For example, after entering your job history, you will receive suggestions for expanding upon your professional accomplishments or skills that align with your experience.
  • Optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): These systems are used by employers to screen resumes before they are seen by a human. Our builder suggests keywords and phrases that are likely to be favorable in these systems based on your job title.
  • Feedback and revision suggestions: we’ve got a resume checker that provides feedback on the overall quality of the resume, including suggestions for improving layout, grammar, and wording.

How do I use ChatGPT on my resume?

You can use ChatGPT on your resume for a range of activities, related to resume building, including:

  • Rewriting or writing from scratch difficult-to-write resume sections, such as your resume summary and job descriptions.
  • Making your resume bullet points more action and performance-oriented.
  • Suggesting skills and other keywords to include in your resume based on a job title.
  • Suggesting extra sections that can help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Using your resume as a starting point for an interview preparation mockup.
  • Using your resume as a base for writing your cover letter.

Can recruiters tell if my resume was written by ChatGPT?

As long as your application is customized with your job history and accomplishments, it’s unlikely that recruiters can tell if you used ChatGPT. ChatGPT can only help improve your resume writing, but lying on a resume is unacceptable.

Are resumes scanned by AI?

Resumes in some companies are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may or may not have AI features. These systems parse resumes and match them with job descriptions. Enhancv’s resume templates are tested for ATS compatibility, though a 100% parsing rate is not guaranteed due to varying ATS models because the content of the resume is more important for ATS-friendliness than the template itself.

Enhancv Executive has changed my life: One week & four interviews later, I will be making 150% more doing the job I chose.

Your resume is an extension of yourself – make one that’s truly you.

I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

Man holding resume in front of a computer

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

Upgrade your life with a daily dose of the biggest tech news, lifestyle hacks and our curated analysis. Be the first to know about cutting-edge gadgets and the hottest deals.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

Resume created by Rezi.ai

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

Resume created by Resumaker

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

Resume created by Teal

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

Resume created by Kickresume

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

Honorary score: 4/5

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

AI Resume Writer FAQ

While we’ve tried to make this tool as easy to use as possible, it’s okay to have questions. If you don’t find your answers here, contact our customer support.

What is Kickresume AI Resume Writer?

Kickresume AI Resume Writer is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3 neural network which is a powerful language model able to produce texts that are indistinguishable from texts written by human writers.

In other words, the AI Resume Writer does exactly what you’d think it would — automatically writes your resume.

  • All you have to do is enter your job title, click “Use AI Writer” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.
  • If you don't like these bullet points, you can either edit them or delete them and click the button again.
  • If you like the bullet points but feel like that section is still too short, simply click the button again and the AI will add more phrases to it.

But naturally, since the text is written by AI and not you, you still need to tweak some details in the end. Nevertheless, it can still help you write your first draft.

Is the AI Resume Writer free?

Even with a free account, you get a limited number of uses. Every premium subscription (starting at $5/month) includes a substantially higher number of AI requests.

At the beginning of every billing period, credits are added to your account (whether it’s a month, three months, or a year).

GPT-3 is a paid tool and we have to pay Open-AI for every API request. We’re “buying” the use of their AI technology. Because of that, we had to put a limit on how many times you can use the AI Writer per month.

Kickresume’s AI Resume Writer is able to generate a work experience section based on a provided job title.

All you have to do is:

  • Sign up or log in to your Kickresume account. When logged in, on the dashboard scroll down to Your Documents and click on Create New.
  • When filling in the Work Experience section, enter your job title, click “ Use AI Writer ” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.

Our AI Resume Builder is easy to use, generates unique resumes every time, and uses natural language indistinguishable from resumes written by human writers.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Resume Builders

Do you still have some questions? Check out the answers to the most common questions related to AI resume builders.

1. How can you effectively use an AI resume builder?

The best way to use AI to create your resume is to provide it with comprehensive information.

First, figure out exactly what’s in demand for the position you’re applying for. If you only give the resume builder a general idea of the role you’re aiming for, it’s going to give you a generalized resume.

The more details you provide about the exact job you want to apply for, the better. The AI will be able to focus on those particular areas and help you highlight your most relevant strengths and experiences.

Artificial Intelligence works best with well-structured data, so by inputting as much of it as necessary, you can get the most out of the AI resume builder.

So, add all your work experience, skills, details about your education , and anything else you think is relevant.

2. Can AI update my resume?

Yes, AI can be used to update your resume.

You can, for example, use an AI-powered resume builder to input your updated career information and then the AI will provide suggestions. The suggested changes may include optimizing the language on your resume, formatting the layout for more readability, or highlighting skills and experiences based on the job you want.

However, while AI can provide guidance, the final decision on everything is up to you. AI can’t fully understand the complexities of your personal experience and career objectives but it can make the resume-writing process a lot faster and easier.

3. Are there free AI resume builders?

While most AI resume builders include a paywall, some have a free version.

For example, Novorésumé offers a free version of the resume builder which can greatly help you create a compelling resume. The AI provides suggestions for improving your resume’s content and layout, as well as offers keywords based on your industry and professional background.

Give it a try for yourself!

And that’s our list of the best AI-powered resume builders!

Hopefully, now you’re familiar with the tools at your disposal and you’re ready to make the perfect resume with the help of AI and a user-friendly resume builder.

AI Resume Writer Frequently Asked Questions

How does an ai resume writer work.

An AI resume writer analyzes thousands of existing resumes across industries and job titles to learn how to write the perfect resume for any application. Simply input basic information such as your current job title and skills, and let our AI resume writer generate text for your resume’s summary and work experience sections.

Can my AI resume be personalized to each job I apply to?

AI resumes are the perfect option when you’re applying for many positions, because they allow you to personalize each resume quickly and efficiently. Whether you choose to personalize the content manually, or request changes from the AI itself, our AI resume builder can generate unlimited personalized resumes.

How effective are resumes generated by an AI resume writer?

Resumes generated by an AI resume writer are just as effective, if not more effective, than traditional, manually written resumes. Because our AI resume writer has analyzed so many effective resumes, it understands exactly what to say to help you stand apart from the crowd and catch a hiring manager’s attention, fast.

How long does it take to build a resume using AI?

An AI resume can take just minutes to build. Once you’ve input your information, VisualCV’s AI resume writer will generate your content in a matter of seconds. After that, it’s up to you how much or how little you’d like to change the content or add any extra sections, such as skills, to your resume.

What information should I provide an AI resume writer?

The more information you provide an AI resume writer, the better. However, VisualCV’s AI resume writer can create resume summaries and resume work experience entries using minimal information, such as your industry and level of experience. For example, telling the AI resume writer that you work in finance and your current job title is portfolio manager will lead the AI writer to create content based on previously analyzed portfolio manager resumes. This approach may require more editing on your end, but can be a great jumping off point when you’re feeling stuck. On the other hand, if you include more information about your accomplishments at your current position, the AI resume builder can give your work experience or summary sections that extra bit of polish you’re looking for.

Will my resume pass Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software?

All of VisualCV’s professionally designed resume templates have been formulated specifically to pass ATS software. Using our AI resume builder will not impact your resume’s ability to be seen by a real person in any way!

Should I use an AI resume writer, or a professional resume writer?

Whether to use AI or a professional resume writer can be a tricky decision, but, in general, our AI resume builder is a perfect jumping off point when you’re not sure how to begin writing. If your career has been especially long, you have many jobs to speak about, or your journey can be difficult or complicated to explain in a resume, you might find it easier to work with a (human) professional resume writer. However, the majority of resumes are straightforward and perfect candidates for our AI resume writer.

Can I make edits to my resume after the AI resume writer creates it?

You can always edit your resume in VisualCV’s resume builder after our AI resume writer has created it. If you aren’t happy with the content the AI resume builder provides, you can either edit the existing content or regenerate the provided content for a new suggestion.

10 resume writing tips that will make you stand out.

Here are some helpful tips on how you can ensure that your resume not only highlights your accomplishments and skills, but also captures employers’ attention immediately. 1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. Your resume should showcase your skills and accomplishments as it relates to the role you are applying for. Even if your employment history is not aligned with the role, it is important to find elements that match the requirements of the position you are applying for. This will show employers that you have the potential to grow within the role, and therefore will be more inclined to move forward with your candidacy. 2. A good self-introduction can do wonders. Before you dive into the technical details of your past roles and education, try to add a short introduction of no more than 2-3 sentences. This is your place to tell employers a little about yourself and don’t be afraid to be creative. A few sentences can give employers a chance to get to know you and your potential contribution to their companies. Also, a self-introduction can be useful if you are applying for a role that is outside your current field - use this section as a means to tell employers why this specific position or field interests you. 3. Remember to use a reverse chronological order when listing your jobs, degrees and/or projects (from new to old). Your resume space is limited to one page (unless you have particularly extensive experience) and employers read it from top to bottom when looking for the latest employment experience at the top. 4. Do not use first person in your writing, such as "I made presentations", or “I managed people". This is incorrect and it makes the resume seem like a story. Since this is an official document, it should speak a professional language. For example, you should write that your role in a certain company included: "Preparing presentations", "Managing employees", "Creating collaborations". These should appear as bullet points and neatly organized. 5. Be brief! It is not necessary to list all the roles you have ever held. You want to showcase your most recent experience as it is most relevant to who you are today, and share your less relevant experience in one line at the bottom of your resume. Refrain from including short-term positions that are not relevant to the skills that are required for the position you are interested in (working as a waiter during the studying for a degree, etc.). Also, be careful not to leave "blanks" in your resume, or period during which you did not work. This can make employers wonder about your credibility and reduce your chances of being considered for the role. 6. Use quantitative information to outline your accomplishments. People find it easier to grasp quantitative information, so try to use numbers and percentages when describing your professional experience. Using data will not only specify your experience, but also make it sound more powerful by using concrete examples. For example, instead of saying "budget management", try using "budget management of 10 million dollars per year". Or instead of "employee management", you can say "managing 6 employees". This tip is also useful for entry-level jobs - instead of saying "responsibility for handling customer inquiries", try saying "responsibility for handling about 10,000 customer inquiries a month". 7. Don’t forget to include your soft skills. In your skills section, you should emphasize both your technical and analytical skills, as well your human relations skills. Employers want to know that you will be able to get along with others on the team, so even if you are a security expert with extensive knowledge on the most innovative software, your resume should also emphasize your ability to work in a team environment and communicate well with others. 8. Incorporate keywords into your resume. Use keywords that derive from the job description, from recruiting company’s website, or from descriptions of similar jobs in other companies. For example, if it says that candidates must have knowledge in Microsoft office, add it to your resume - do not let the employer make assumptions about your experience. Be mindful to not overdo it - stay true to yourself and your experience. 9. Pay attention to the smallest details. Impressive design, no spelling errors, a uniform font, bulleted chapter headings, and spaces between paragraphs with reasonable margins. All of these finer details show that you not only invested in your resume, but also you are organized and attentive to detail – which are important qualities to have in any position. 10. Make sure your resume is neat, easy to read and symmetrical. You will have a lot to say about your accomplishments, but the important highlights of your career will be lost if your resume is cluttered and tires the employer. Choose a professional design that highlights your experience and capabilities, and do not be afraid to add a little color so that your resume stands out from other candidates.

What is the difference between Resume and CV?

The distinction between a resume and a CV lies in their length, content, and purpose. In the United States, the terms are often used interchangeably, but in other parts of the world like Europe, they have different meanings.

Resume: - Length: Typically 1-2 pages. - Content: Summarizes your work experience, education, skills, and achievements. It's tailored to the specific job you're applying for, focusing on relevant qualifications. - Purpose: Mainly used for job applications in various industries. Its concise format makes it suitable for quickly showcasing your qualifications to potential employers.

CV (Curriculum Vitae): - Length: Can vary in length, often several pages. - Content: Provides a comprehensive overview of your entire professional history, including all jobs, education, research, publications, presentations, awards, and more. It's more exhaustive and doesn't necessarily get customized for each application. - Purpose: Commonly used in academic and research fields, as well as when applying for positions where a detailed overview of your accomplishments is crucial.

In the US, the distinction between these two terms is prevalent. However, in many other countries, especially in Europe, the term "CV" is used as a synonym for what Americans would call a resume.

It's important to note that conventions can vary, so when applying for jobs or academic opportunities, it's always wise to follow the regional norms and expectations. If you're interested in delving deeper into the subject of Curriculum Vitae, explore our comprehensive guide: "How to write a Resume."

What to include in a Resume?

A resume is a concise document that highlights your qualifications, skills, and experiences, tailored specifically for a job application. It should effectively showcase your suitability for a particular role and capture the attention of potential employers. Here's what you should include in a resume:

  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Optional: LinkedIn Profile (if it's professional and up-to-date)
  • A brief statement that summarizes your career goals, skills, and what you bring to the role.
  • Tailor this section to match the specific job you're applying for.
  • Highlight relevant skills that align with the job description.
  • Categorize skills into sections like Technical Skills, Soft Skills, Language Proficiencies, etc.
  • List your relevant work experiences in reverse chronological order.
  • Include the job title, company name, location, dates of employment, and key responsibilities and achievements.
  • Use bullet points to describe your accomplishments in each role.
  • Quantify your achievements when possible (e.g., "Increased sales by 20%," "Managed a team of 10").
  • List your educational background in reverse chronological order.
  • Include the degree(s) earned, institution name, location, dates attended, and any honors or awards.
  • Include relevant certifications, workshops, seminars, and training programs.
  • This section can demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Highlight relevant projects you've worked on, especially if they demonstrate your skills and accomplishments.
  • Include the project's name, your role, a brief description, and outcomes.
  • Include any relevant awards, honors, or achievements that showcase your capabilities.
  • List memberships in industry associations, organizations, or societies that pertain to the role.
  • Include relevant volunteer work or extracurricular activities that highlight your character and skills.
  • Similar to the resume, you can mention that references are available if required.
  • Use a clean and professional format with a readable font.
  • Use bullet points for easy scanning.
  • Keep the resume to one page for early-career professionals; consider a second page for more experienced candidates.
  • Ensure consistent formatting for headings, bullet points, and text alignment.

Tailor your resume for each application by aligning your experiences and skills with the job description. Focus on the most relevant information that will make you stand out as a strong candidate. Proofread carefully to ensure accuracy and clarity. A well-crafted resume will enhance your chances of getting noticed and progressing to the interview stage.

What is a chronological resume, and what order should it be in?

A chronological resume is a type of resume format that focuses on presenting your work history in reverse chronological order. This means that you list your most recent job or experience first and then proceed in reverse order, highlighting your earlier roles. This format is commonly used and is particularly effective if you have a consistent and strong work history. The order of sections in a chronological resume typically follows this structure:

Remember to keep the layout clean, use clear headings, and employ bullet points for easy readability. Tailor your descriptions and achievements to align with the job you're seeking. The chronological format is effective for showcasing a strong work history, but if you have gaps in employment or are changing careers, you might consider other resume formats that better highlight your strengths in those situations.

  • Contact Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of the page.
  • Summary or Objective Statement: Provide a brief overview of your skills, experiences, and career goals. This section is optional but can be beneficial if tailored to the specific job you're applying for.
  • Job Title: Your job title in that role.
  • Company: The name of the company you worked for.
  • Dates: The duration of your employment (month and year).
  • Responsibilities and Achievements: Use bullet points to outline your key responsibilities and accomplishments for each role. Focus on quantifiable achievements and specific contributions.
  • Degree: The degree you earned.
  • Major: Your field of study.
  • Institution: The name of the institution where you studied.
  • Graduation Date: The date you graduated or expect to graduate.
  • Skills: Highlight relevant skills, both hard and soft, that are pertinent to the job you're applying for. This can include technical skills, languages, software proficiency, and more.
  • Optional Sections: Depending on your circumstances, you might include additional sections such as certifications, awards, volunteer work, or relevant projects.
  • References: Mention that references are available upon request. You can include this statement, or if requested by the employer, provide references' contact information.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a formal document that accompanies your resume or CV when applying for a job, internship, or other professional opportunities. It's typically sent along with your application materials, either as a physical letter or as part of an email. A cover letter serves as an introduction to your application and provides additional context about your qualifications and motivations.

Key components of a cover letter include:

  • Contact Information: Similar to your resume, include your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of the letter.
  • Date: The date on which you're writing the letter.
  • Recipient's Information: Address the letter to the hiring manager or relevant person. If you have their name, use it. If not, a generic salutation like "Dear Hiring Manager" can suffice.
  • Introduction: Begin with a professional and engaging opening paragraph. Mention the specific job title you're applying for and briefly state how you learned about the position or the company.
  • Body Paragraphs: Use one or two paragraphs to highlight your relevant skills, qualifications, and experiences. You can expand upon points from your resume, but avoid restating everything verbatim. Focus on specific examples that demonstrate your suitability for the position and how your skills align with the company's needs.
  • Motivation and Fit: Explain why you're interested in the role and the company. Show that you've done your research and discuss how your goals and values align with the company's mission and culture.
  • Closing Paragraph: Express your enthusiasm for the opportunity and invite the reader to review your resume or CV for more details. Indicate your willingness to discuss your application further and provide your contact information.
  • Closing Salutation: Use a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards."
  • Signature: Sign your name above your typed name.

A well-crafted cover letter allows you to showcase your communication skills, demonstrate your genuine interest in the position, and provide insights that may not be fully covered in your resume. It's an opportunity to make a personalized connection with the employer and stand out from other applicants. Customize each cover letter for the specific job you're applying for, addressing the company's needs and showcasing how you can contribute to their success.

Create a Competitive Resume With ChatGPT in 6 Simple Steps

Writing or updating a resume with ChatGPT is simple, as long as you know what you're doing. Follow the steps below to create a resume, tailored to the job you're interested in.

  • Gather your information
  • Open ChatGPT and craft your first prompt
  • Enter your personal experience
  • Enter information about the job description
  • Enter information about the hiring company
  • Edit and refine your resume

1. Gather your information

Before you even open ChatGPT, we recommend having all of your important information at hand. This will prevent you from switching between tabs when crafting your prompt, and will also make it easier for you to refine your resume in later stages.

The type of information you prepare will depend on you and the position you are applying for. However, as a general rule of thumb, we recommend covering the following categories.

  • Contact details – This will include your mobile number, professional email, and address if relevant
  • Education – Write down your education history, including the names of the institutions you studied at, your majors or subjects, your grades, the dates of graduation, and any other relevant information.
  • Work experience – If you have one, make sure you have a copy of your current resume to hand. If not, compile information from your previous jobs, including your responsibilities, and information about the companies.
  • Certifications – If you have any certifications or qualifications that are relevant to your role, or make you seem like more of a credible candidate, gather this information and think about how these achievements can be leveraged to improve your hiring potential
  • Skills – This is a good time to summarise your best hard and soft skills too. However, be as specific as possible and make sure you only write down skills that relate to your prospective role.

2. Open ChatGPT and craft your first prompt

Once all your information is at hand, open ChatGPT and create an account if you haven't already. Then, craft an introductory prompt requesting ChatGPT to build you a resume. We'd also recommend asking the chatbot to avoid using overused or cliche terms in your opening prompt to prevent your resume from looking like a carbon copy.

If you're stuck for inspiration, here's an example prompt:

I am writing a resume and I need your help. You are going to act as a professional resume writer, and are going to avoid using cliche terms. Do you understand?

After you've entered this prompt, ChatGPT will ask you for your following experience.

3. Enter your personal experience

Now it's time to make your resume personal. Use all the information you compiled in the first step, and feed it into your next prompts for ChatGPT. You have two options here. You can either paste your entire current resume into ChatGPT or highlight the most important bits in the prompt, to keep things succinct.

Here's an example of a prompt you could create below. We chose to break the prompt into different chunks but feel free to format the input how you like.

I am going to give you my personal information so you can make sure the resume reflects my personal experience and qualifications. I am a [Insert Current Job Title), with a degree in [Insert Course] from [Insert Name of Institition], which I graduated from in [Insert graduation date] with a [Insert Your Final Grade]. Since graduating, I've worked as a [Insert Previous Position] for [Insert Name of Previous Company] between [Insert Dates]. My main responsibilities at GoodContent included [Insert Main Responsibilities]. In my current role in [Insert Name of Current Company], I [Insert Current Responsibilities]. I have a number of hard and soft skills including [List Skills]. I also have a certification in [Insert Certifications]. Write my resume.

4. Enter information about the job description

Unless you're creating a multi-purpose resume that you're planning to tailor to specific job descriptions down the line, this is a good time to add more context about the job you're planning to apply for. You can do this by simply pasting the job description into the chatbot, as we did in the example prompt below.

I am applying for a job as a [Insert Job Title]. I am going to provide you with the job description I am going to apply for. Can you read this carefully? [Insert Full Job Description]

For best practice, we'd recommend including as much information in this step as possible. However, if some details in the job description don't apply to you as much as others, you can choose to leave these out.

5. Enter information about the hiring company

To make sure your resume is as targeted as possible, you should enter more information about the company itself next.

We'd start by telling ChatGPT exactly what you're going to do. Let it know you're going to be providing it with more information about the company that's hiring, and then enter basic information about the company, including its name and core function. You can also paste information from the ‘About Us' page on the company's website, to make your prompt as rich as possible. Use the example prompt below for inspiration.

Now I'm going to provide you with more information on the company that's hiring, so you can make sure my resume is tailored to their pain points and hiring needs. The company name is [Insert Name of Company] and their central mission is as follows: [Insert More Informatio About the Company]. The website's about you page is as follows: [Insert Company's ‘About Us' Page]

create resume with help of ai

6. Edit and refine your resume

After completing these steps, ChatGPT will have created a rough resume for you. While it may look decent, now is a good time to give it a read over, and identify areas that could be improved upon.

  • Edit the format – ChatGPT can only generate text outputs, so you'll have to format the resume yourself. The way you format the document is up to you, but for scannability purposes, make sure all the key information is bullet-pointed.
  • Use active tense – Ensure your resume uses the active tense as much as possible, especially when speaking about your current work experience. This will make you appear more confident, and will grab the attention of the reader.
  • Check the content – ChatGPT does a good job of building a resume based on the content you provide. However, if you think the resume should place more emphasis on certain experiences or skills, don't be afraid to craft new prompts to achieve this.
  • Watch out for generic language – ChatGPT has a habit of creating generic-sounding responses. To make sure your resume has a human touch, comb through the copy and substitute cliche, or frilly terms with something less formulaic.
  • Add contact details – Once you're happy with the result, add the personal contact details you prepared in the first step.
  • Choose a template – Paste the ChatGPT-created resume into a template of your choice. Make sure that this template is appropriate for the industry that you are applying within, and avoid models that are too stylized and complicated. If you don't want to pay for a template, you can choose a free one with platforms like Canva and Indeed.

Consider Using a Dedicated AI Resume Builder

ChatGPT does an excellent job at creating resumes, especially if you're armed with useful tips and tried-and-tested prompts. Also, a massive perk of the platform is that it's completely free to use too, which is a huge boon if you're looking to save money during the job search.

However, if you're willing to invest in your professional future, AI-enabled resume builders let you create and edit resumes in even fewer steps, and offer far more useful features than ChatGPT. Most AI resume builders will ask you to input your qualifications and experience, and then take care of everything else, saving the hassle of entering different prompts.

Aside from generating and refining text, lots of AI resume builders format and design your document too, eliminating the need to switch between platforms. After researching the best options on the market, we decided that Zety Resume Builder is the best due to its impressive range of templates and intuitive “final summary” feature.

There are loads of great pieces of software to choose from, though. Compare the best platforms in our guide to the best free and paid resume builders .

How to Use ChatGPT to Write Your Resume

Struggling to create a perfect resume? Find out how ChatGPT can help you write it and land your dream job.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT helps you cut out manual work and summarize your resume.
  • Use ChatGPT to generate outlines and flesh out important sections that will impress potential employers.
  • ChatGPT Premium subscribers can use custom GPTs to analyze existing information and get more refined answers.

Standing out with your resume can be a huge challenge, but ChatGPT is a great tool to generate ideas and automate some of your editing. Learn how to write a high-quality resume with ChatGPT and how to fix common errors.

How to Write Your Resume With ChatGPT From Scratch

When writing your resume with ChatGPT, you can choose to either write everything from scratch or use a plugin. If you don't have a premium subscription, you're limited to using ChatGPT without custom GPTs. Let's start by looking at how to use the free version.

How to Draft a Resume Outline With ChatGPT

Contrary to popular belief, writing a resume in ChatGPT isn't as simple as a one-and-done prompt. You need to build on the information you add over time. Before adding customized information, it's worth asking the AI tool for a simple outline. To do this, I asked ChatGPT:

"Can you please help me write a resume? I want to land a job as a photographer at an agency."

It's also worth asking ChatGPT to keep everything to one page if that's your preference. ChatGPT provides a simple outline, including suggestions to add contact information, related skills, and a statement or summary.

ChatGPT also suggested that we add references, related educational and professional history, and links to our portfolio.

With these basics, you can spend some time thinking about how you want to customize your resume. Before you move on to the next section, consider learning about the most common ChatGPT prompting mistakes to avoid .

How to Write Your Professional Experience and Resume Summary With ChatGPT

With an overall outline of your resume, you can start filling it out step-by-step. Based on our testing, it’s best to start with your professional experience. This will make it much easier for ChatGPT to generate the rest of your resume appropriately. I gave ChatGPT this prompt:

"For Professional Experience: I have run my own Instagram page for six years about landscape photography. I have grown it to 25,000 followers and achieved 300% year-on-year growth this year. I also have my own blog which has 100,000 monthly readers about travel in the US, for which I have taken all of the pictures. As a freelancer, I have a retainer with my local newspaper and have also worked with agencies. For one agency project, my images helped contribute to a campaign generating $10 million in revenue. Can you please add this to the Professional Experience section and re-generate the draft?"

ChatGPT then fleshed out my Professional Experience section based on this information. You can ask to have your start and (if applicable) end dates added, but you can also add these manually if you'd prefer. Here's what ChatGPT gave me:

Rather helpfully, ChatGPT also adjusted my Objective Statement with the information provided:

The initial summary was quite long, so I asked ChatGPT to shorten it to 150 characters. But since that wasn't very informative, I upped the parameters to three sentences and 280 characters. The result was much better:

Besides avoiding common errors within ChatGPT, you should avoid easy-to-overlook resume mistakes when looking for a new job. Examples include putting education above experience and not customizing your resume for each application. You may also want to learn how to create a resume in Canva if you're interested in eye-catching designs.

How to Use ChatGPT to Outline Skills in Your Resume

Ultimately, your employer will want your skills to match their job opening. Make sure you showcase them in the best way possible when writing your resume with ChatGPT. I gave quite a detailed prompt here:

"Perfect. Now, let's outline my skills. I'm advanced in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, with knowledge of color grading, editing exposure, and using histograms and layers. I also have an Adobe CC All Apps subscription. Furthermore, I've taken over 200,000 photos in various conditions, including golden hour and at night—along with during the winter and summer. Soft skills include time management (I use Google Calendar to block out my entire day) and being excellent at communicating with other people. My visual storytelling skills are evident in my 1,000+ blog posts that clearly highlight the full story of each journey I take. I also know how to use Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and Canon mirrorless cameras."

ChatGPT then gave me a relatively detailed summary of the skills I asked it to showcase:

I felt like these needed some more information, so I then asked ChatGPT:

"I think we need to add a bit more. Let's also talk about my creative skills, and move Visual Storytelling into that section. I know all about the exposure triangle and experimenting with different forms of lighting, along with using aperture priority, manual, and shutter priority modes."

The edited section was much better and outlined the creative skills I wanted to showcase in further detail (along with putting these in a separate area).

ChatGPT also included the soft skills section that was in the first draft:

Once you've got the information you need, you can add these to your resume and tweak them further if you feel like doing so is necessary. Either way, it's important to proofread everything and make sure your resume is accurate before you send it to potential employers.

How to Add Your Educational History to Your Resume With ChatGPT

While employers care more about your work and project experience than your education, the skills you pick up while studying are still worth adding. To start, I gave ChatGPT this prompt:

"Great, let's now move on to educational experience. I studied journalism at university, during which I did several multimedia programs and an optional photojournalism module. I learned how to tell stories through pictures and what captivates audiences, along with the best photographic practices and how to maintain integrity. At university, I also freelanced for companies in the local area and founded my own media team for the university's basketball team."

ChatGPT gave me the following after I asked it to also include course dates and locations, which was pretty good:

How to Write a Resume With ChatGPT Using a Custom GPT

If you use ChatGPT premium, you can create a resume using a custom GPT. The prompts from the previous sections should also work when using a custom GPT. However, if you already have a resume, you can upload it to get feedback and improve from there. Here's how to do so:

  • Upload a PDF version of your resume.

ChatGPT can help you customize your resume and save hours of time that you'd otherwise spend thinking about what to add. Use the tool to make your writing more concise and summarize the most important parts of your work-related experience. You can also analyze existing resumes if you already have an existing framework. Make sure that you proofread and customize everything to your own needs before you start applying for jobs.

Indeed announces AI-powered work experience writer and support for multiple resumes

create resume with help of ai

Hiring portal Indeed has redesigned the profile page for users, allowing individuals to use an AI-powered writer to fill up work experience, and also added support for multiple resumes. The company has also launched a set of smart sourcing suites for recruiters with features like AI-powered candidate summaries and custom messages.

Recruit Holdings-owned Indeed is revamping its profile page and adding AI-aided features to better compete with rivals like LinkedIn, Talent.com and ZipRecruiter . The new AI-powered work experience writer helps people form better descriptions of different projects.

The company is also adding support for saving up to five resumes so that an individual can easily pick the most relevant copy when applying for different kinds of roles. Both the features will roll out soon, Indeed said.

Indeed profile revamp

The job seeking portal already had a toggle to make a user’s profile visible to recruiters. But now the company is turning it on by default and making it easily accessible on the settings page.

On the other side, the company is releasing a smart sourcing suite for recruiters to reduce what they are calling “irrelevant outreach” — when employers reach out to candidates that don’t match the job profile. Apart from advanced search filters, companies can also access AI-powered candidate summaries.

AI summary profile

Indeed is also adding AI-powered smart messaging and automated interview scheduling. The AI-assisted messaging tool enables hiring managers to create or modify communication with job seekers. During the testing phase, the company said it observed that recruiters that used the smart sourcing feature for hiring saved up to six hours per week.

When we asked the company about how it avoids biases or ensures that AI-powered summaries don’t miss out on key details, Indeed said that it employs a responsible AI team to thwart harm.

Indeed’s rival LinkedIn has also infused AI into multiple aspects, such as learning, recruitment, marketing, sales , messaging and profile enhancement .

Deepti Patibandla, senior director of Product at Indeed, told TechCrunch over a call that the company wants to continue its focus on getting people hired.

“While LinkedIn is more of a professional social network or a platform, at Indeed, we want to get more people hired. That is the core value of our business. As a differentiator, we want to make the hiring process easier,” she said.

“We want to make sure that people are getting the right jobs and not getting inundated by random jobs. Those two are our main focal points for now. Long term we see the opportunity for users to come to Indeed to set their career trajectory path.”

Last year, Indeed laid off 2,200 employees, or 15% of its staff . At that time, CEO Chris Hyams said that the organization was “simply too big for what lies ahead.”

There are a number of existing startups and large companies that are leveraging AI to help with ... [+] different aspects of the job search and hiring process.

In the new gold rush of artificial intelligence, Indeed, the large job aggregation site, is infusing the fast-emerging technology to make the job search process more efficient and effective. Its new tool, SmartSourcing, strategically integrates various AI technologies to enhance the job search features and assist users in finding new job opportunities more easily.

In a phone interview with Raj Mukherjee, executive vice president and general manager at Indeed, he shared the unveiling of the job aggregations site’s AI recruiting and job-matching features.

“Gone are the days of spray and pray for both sides of the equation,” Mukherjee said. “We know that sending an application to hundreds of jobs or sending messages to hundreds of mismatched candidates only prolongs the process of actually finding a job.”

Here’s How It Works

Indeed has utilized AI technology for over two decades and is continuing to leverage machine learning algorithms to create a job-matching system that connects job seekers with on-target, relevant employment opportunities. Once the user creates a profile or uploads a résumé, Indeed extracts relevant information, such as skills, experiences, education levels and a number of keywords.

The AI algorithms analyze the job hunter’s profile and résumé data. By identifying the requisite qualifications and areas of expertise, it will make it easier to match a job seeker with the right opportunity.

“Employers don’t want to sift through hundreds or thousands of résumés, and we want to make sure that we help them find the best qualified candidates to fill their role—not just the most applicants,” Mukherjee stated.

The more your specific qualifications are in concert with the job requirements, the higher you'll rank in search results. Additionally, AI factors in data points such as prior work histories, job responsibilities, preferred locations, past search histories, and other metrics to make a match. Over time, the job-matching process gets more fine-tuned.

According to Mukherjee, Indeed’s AI-driven technology results in employers saving an average of 8.1 hours per week. “With instant matching and personalized recommendations, 95% of employers confirm that 'Smart Sourcing' greatly reduces time-to-hire,” he added.

“Candidate highlights provide an AI-generated summary to help employers easily determine whether candidates are a good fit for their role. For qualified candidates, employers can then use Smart Messages to quickly connect with AI-generated personalized outreach," Mukherjee said about the process.

Other AI Features

There are other relatively new and improved AI features on Indeed to help enhance the job search experience.

  • There is an AI-powered work experience writer tool that helps job candidates write better descriptions about their personal work experiences by using suggested relevant keywords and highlighting achievements.
  • The platform affords the opportunity to upload and manage multiple résumés, making it easier to tailor applications to specific job requirements.
  • AI-powered candidate summaries provide recruiters with a snapshot of a candidate’s skills and experience extracted from their résumé and profile information.
  • Employers can leverage AI to automate the scheduling process, streamlining communication with potential candidates.
  • AI-powered smart messaging enables employers to send personalized messages to candidates at scale, potentially improving response rates.
  • AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants will be integrated into the platform to guide job seekers during the application process. These bots effectively address queries and offer support as individuals navigate through the job application journey, enhancing user experience and convenience.

AI Recruiting And Job Matching Is Growing

There are a number of existing startups and large companies that are also leveraging AI to help with different aspects of the job search and hiring process.

LinkedIn, the social media site owned by Microsoft MSFT , has utilized AI for years, matching job seekers with opportunities and connecting candidates with recruiters and talent acquisition professionals.

LinkedIn unveiled in October its AI recruiter feature along with a career coaching chatbox. The go-to social media site for job seekers uses AI to match job seekers with job openings based on their skills and experience. It also provides personalized job recommendations and career coaching. Its product—Recruiter 2024—aims to enable recruiters and talent acquisition professionals to find on-target candidates for their jobs faster.

The feature offers a clean interface with a rectangular box in which the recruiter and talent leaders can use natural language and put their hiring goals in their own words. For example, you can write, “I’m searching for a software engineer with 10 years of experience,” and then add some specific skills, background and experiences pertinent to the role. AI combined with LinkedIn’s massive data can produce the candidates the employer desperately seeks.

Recruiter 2024 frees search professionals from daily rote and repetitive tasks. They can spend more time preparing their candidates for interviews instead of painfully sifting through hundreds of unbefitting résumés. For contingency recruiters, finding the right candidate before their competitors is a race. If they fail to make the placement, the recruiter doesn't get paid for the time and energy they put into the search.

Additionally, LinkedIn offers a career coaching chatbox based, in part, on content built by more than 3,000 career experts. AI-powered coaching in LinkedIn Learning features a chatbot experience offering both real-time bespoke advice tailored to the content and personalized recommendations for your needs, career goals and questions.

Hired is a job search platform that uses AI to match job seekers with job openings based on their skills and experience. This is achieved by analyzing job seekers' résumés, cover letters and other pertinent profile information, as well as the job descriptions of the companies they are interested in.

Hired, backed by the Adecco Group, has over three million tech-related professionals on the site and more than 10,000 companies around the world on its marketplace to match thousands of active and qualified candidates. Talent acquisition professionals save an average of 45 sourcing hours for each role using Hired’s platform, according to CEO Josh Brenner

The site also uses AI to match job seekers' behavioral traits with the attributes that are most likely to be successful in a particular role.

Employers that have joined Hired’s marketplace have a higher demand for specialized engineers, especially for AI applications, such as machine learning, as well as cybersecurity, data and backend engineers.

Phenom uses artificial intelligence to automate tasks and personalize job searches. The technology can predict and guide job seekers to the roles that fit their backgrounds. It also enables employers to match people with the right jobs. This includes finding on-target talent within their organization and promoting them internally. Its software is embedded into an array of job sites with some of the largest companies in the world. The career-tech company has 300 million users and 1 million jobs posted in 130 countries.

Wellfound, a talent job site focused on startups, has an AI-powered sourcing tool called RecruiterCloud. It goes beyond simple keyword matching and aggregates billions of data points to enrich candidate profiles with missing skills and insights about their work experience.

Wellfound, formerly AngelList Talent, provides a centralized platform for recruiters to manage the hiring process. With millions of job seekers using Wellfound's platform, RecruiterCloud has access to a vast talent pool to help recruiters find the best matches for their roles.

The technology integrates with Slack, enabling recruiters to more easily connect with their sourcers, review candidates and message their top leads. It also syncs with applicant tracking systems to track candidate progression, avoid duplicate outreach and maximize their time and efficiencies.

Moonhub, backed by investors including Day One Ventures, Alphabet’s GV, Khosla Ventures, Marc Benioff’s TIME Ventures and former YouTube chief executive Susan Wojcicki, leverages AI to enable internal corporate talent acquisition teams and outside third-party recruiters to source and screen candidates.

It looks beyond the typical attributes to find candidates who are an excellent fit for any job opportunity. The technology sources potential candidates from across the internet, searching GitHub, StackOverflow, LinkedIn and other sites.

After identifying candidates, Moonhub screens them through automated assessments to further validate their skills and abilities that match the job description. This helps filter candidates before human review, saving time for recruiters from having to go through hundreds or even thousands of résumés manually.

Human recruiters then manually review the screened candidates to evaluate their experience, portfolios, projects and other qualifications. The process uniquely combines AI screening along with the human judgment of recruiters.

Allowing AI to do the behind-the-scenes work frees recruiters to focus on the relationship-driven aspects of the hiring process to ensure the match is suitable for both the candidate and the company.
