DaDa review: Enjoyable coming-of-age drama about accidental parenthood
Dada movie review: kavin and aparna das-starrer rises above mainstream movies and sends out a strong message on parenthood. directed by ganesh k babu, the film focuses on a young man and his journey of becoming a doting father..
The subject of parenthood, especially in mainstream cinema, has mostly been told from the perspective of a woman. Rarely, we’ve had a film where the story has focused on a man dealing with parenthood and his sacrifices in becoming a good father. Ganesh K Babu’s DaDa is an emotional drama about a young man dealing with becoming a parent, out of the blue, with a lot of maturity. This is also a moving coming-of-age drama of an aimless, college-going youngster thrust into embracing fatherhood when the entire world, including his family, has given up on him.
Watch trailer here:
The film opens with the shot of Kavin and Aparna lying together. Kavin is still sleeping and Aparna just enjoys looking at him while we hear a couple in the neighboring flat arguing early in the morning. Cut to the next shot, Aparna is crying as learns that she’s pregnant and Kavin suggests that she should abort the baby as they aren’t ready to be parents yet. Aparna is against the idea of abortion. Kavin and Aparna decide to move in together and take refuge at a friend’s house. As they get ready to embrace parenthood, living together becomes a hassle as they end fighting over little things. It reaches a point where Kavin blames Aparna for making their lives so miserable when he warned her about keeping the baby. Kavin is forced to raise the baby alone.
The most refreshing aspect of DaDa is that it sends out a very important message loud and clear – parenthood is gender neutral. Both father as well as the mother play key parts in raising a kid and their roles can’t be weighed or compared. As much as the film sheds light on Kavin raising his son alone and in turn becoming a better person as well as a father, it doesn’t try to showcase the mother in poor light. This aspect of the film and the writing is highly appreciable. It also never tries to make the father raising a kid alone a big deal. Even at a crucial juncture in the movie when Kavin and Aparna cross paths again, that moment is treated sensibly. The writing deserves a lot of praise as the film stays away from predictable moments.
As much as DaDa is emotional at times, it’s also thoroughly enjoyable thanks to the use of humour to lighten the mood. The situational comedy works in a big way to keep the entertainment factor ticking throughout the movie. Both Kavin and Aparna are great fit for their respective parts. Kavin comes across a major surprise as he’s someone who’s relatively new but embraces this character with strong understanding and plays it confidently. From the initial helplessness of becoming a father to slowly understanding his role and his responsibility towards his kid, Kavin sells his transformation so competently.

'Dada' review: A well-written drama made with plenty of heart
Director Ganesh K Babu’s debut Dada revolves around an unplanned pregnancy. The story of the film isn’t path-breaking by any means, but what makes it enjoyable is the soulful treatment and witty writing. Take, for instance, the traditional confrontation scene of the lead characters.
Ganesh adds a pinch of realism to the sequence by having the heroine’s voice shake in fatigue, given that she has cried for hours; the hero, on the other hand, is too angry to pay attention to her. At one point, he interrupts her to say, “ Nee solradhu enakku puriyala; niruthi ozhunga sollu !” The scene may not offer tremendous insight, but attention to these little details makes the conversation relatable and grounded—and you can find this throughout the film.
Dada is almost like a marriage between a Radha Mohan film and a Selavaraghavan film. We have cute conversations between a father and his four-year-old about the educational system; we also have the shot of a girl biting the shoulders of her boyfriend in passion.
In the hands of an inferior writer, Kavin’s Manikandan might have ended up being the pinnacle of toxic masculinity and Aparna’s Sindhu would have been the sacrificing angel. But Ganesh makes it clear that Mani is not a brute and Sindhu is no angel. The characters are flawed in their own ways, and in their vulnerable moments, they confess their mistakes and wish things were different.
Recent Tamil cinema has featured heroes who seem immune to failure. Even when they fall, the elevation happens within seconds. Things, however, are different in Dada.
The much-desired redemption in Manikandan’s life gets delayed. He takes three or four blows on his face from life before rising above his situation. Even though his life-changing job offer comes through a recommendation, much like in Velaiyilla Pattathari, here, the win feels personal as we have seen Mani toil enough.
The film is emotional but is equally fun with a strong undercurrent of tasteful humour. When Mani and Sindhu feel that they have hit rock bottom and talk about finding a new rental house, a guy playing PUBG on his phone interrupts them: “ Ipdiye ovvoru veeda maari saava poreenga da !”
The overwhelming pathos gets quickly transformed into quality dark humour. Such good writing is ably handled by its impressive cast. While Kavin and Aparna pour in much life into the characters, supporting cast members like Harish Kumar seize their opportunities too.
Director Ganesh’s Dada can be processed as the story of a man’s pursuit of peace. The film opens and ends with a shot of Manikandan sleeping peacefully. Similarly, the story can also be seen as his quest to become a complete man, and a man who isn’t above crying. Though he proudly claims that he has never shed a tear in his life initially, he breaks down at two crucial places. That he isn’t alone in shedding tears during those vulnerable moments, speaks of this film’s power to affect.

Dada Movie Review: Theatrical Treat For Kavin Fans; He Becomes The Most Wanted Young Hero Of Tamil Cinema!
Just like making jokes about the difficulties we face in our normal life, in this film too director ganesh k babu has impressed the audience by sprinkling laughter in difficult times..
Dada is a film starring actor Kavin who has made his mark from the small screen to the silver screen. In this, Kavin is cast as the hero in the role of Manikandan. Aparna Das has played the role of Sindhu opposite him. Here is the full review of Dada, a film based on father-son affection.
Hero Manikandan (Kavin) comes as an irresponsible college student who doesn't listen to his parents, doesn't study well. He falls in love with fellow student Sindhu (Aparna Das). Sindhu unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Sindhu does not listen to Kavin's request to abort the child, so both leave the house and get married.
Mani, even after marriage, is profligate and comes home drunk. During a fight, the hero who goes away saying "you die" switches off the phone when his wife calls in labor pain. As a result, Sindhu, who gave birth to the baby, leaves him at the hospital and goes with her parents.
The entire responsibility of bringing up the child falls on Mani. He has been a prodigal and irresponsible person until then. He tries to be a good father to his child. He spends days trying not to show his child to his wife. He unexpectedly meets her after 4 years. Will Mani forgive his wife? Why did Sindhu leave the child? A beautiful answer to many such questions is the climax of the film Dada.
Just as the father-daughter affection was beautifully and profoundly expressed in Thanga Meengal, the father-son affection is tenderly expressed in this film as well. As Manikandan, Kavin takes his chances and scores well. He makes the fans' eyes wet especially in the love fight scenes and in the climactic hand to mouth crying scenes. Aparna Das, who made the audience happy despite her brief appearance in the film, acts like a second pillar for Dada. Although the story revolves only around her and Kavin, it seems that she did not get much 'screen space'. Her disappearance for 20 minutes in the film could be the reason for that.
Bhakyaraj and Aishwarya keep our parents in front of our eyes even if it's only for a short while. Aishwarya stands in mind as a wife who does not cross the line set by her husband, even though she trembles as a mother hearing her son's voice. VTV Ganesh in the film is a well-wisher who gives advice and sometimes comes as a comedy punch line speaker to make the audience laugh. Child Artist Advik, who plays Kavin's son, is a great find of the year. A thousand kisses can be given only to the Tamil he speaks. Pradeep Antony and Harish Kumar stand out as supporting characters. All the songs of the film are heart touching. Especially the song 'Thaayaaga Naan' about affection for son makes us melt. Jen Martin did a great job. Just like making jokes about the difficulties we face in our normal life, in this film too director Ganesh K Babu has impressed the audience by sprinkling laughter in difficult times. His realistic comedy dialogues and the way he carried the story attracts the fans. Although the story is predictable, it doesn't seem like a big drawback due to the neat screenplay. All in all, if you want to watch a feel good emotional movie on the weekend with your family, go for Dada. You will love it.

Dada Movie Review (2023)
- 10 Feb 2023
Ganesh K Babu's 'Dada', despite its second-half issues, is a solid relationship drama
Dada Movie Cast & Crew
Right from the opening stretch of Dada , Ganesh K Babu announces that he is a real filmmaker. What we’re watching is basically an "I love you" scene, but rendered without the words being spoken. You see this love, you feel it – especially when the contrasting background is that of a neighbouring couple screaming at each other. You know how you can keep looking at a loved one when they are sleeping, and just savour the blissful nothingness of the moment? This is that scene. What makes it even better are the gentle piano ripples (the score is by Jen Martin) and the gentler conversation that follows. It involves the topic of tears, and you think this is going to set up a big payoff scene at the climax. But no. When the payoff does happen, it is as unassuming as this scene: we see it in an autorickshaw mirror, in the middle of night, in the middle of nowhere.
The first half of Dada is the most satisfying young-love story I have seen since Elan's Pyaar Prema Kaadhal . Okay, it's not just a romance – but it has that same vibe of not wanting to push an emotion too much because "otherwise the audience won't understand". Ganesh trusts his lead actors to convey feelings through micro-gestures – and both Kavin and Aparna Das are superb as Manikandan and Sindhu. At one point, he kisses her casually and leaves. She looks into the mirror casually. She smiles a very small smile, again casually. The big idea is an unexpected pregnancy, and I loved every bit of how this was handled: the way (and the location where) this revelation is staged, Sindhu's anger, Maniakandan's helplessness, and finally the reconciliation in a silhouette shot. A less confident filmmaker would have had lines that underlined all of this, but we already know this "content", and the "form" is refreshing. Cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K does brilliant work with light and shadows, mirroring this couple's ups and downs.
The crux of the relationship dynamic is that Sindhu does not overcomplicate things, while Manikandan is torn between his love for her and his fear of a future he was not yet ready for. Sindhu adjusts easily into a lower-income-group flat, while Manikandan keeps thinking about their financial situation. The valaikappu scene is a beauty: again, no words, just a row of happy people except Manikandan, whose face reflects his mixed emotions. Even the decision to have the baby is similar: Sindhu simply says she wants it, while Manikandan is a mess of emotion. And subtextually, the rest of the film is about how – after Sindhu leaves him – he learns to live with the chaos of living. He learns to be as "let's just roll with it" as Sindhu. And that's why the film's ending makes complete sense. It just needs one realisation for Sindhu to do what she has to do. And it just needs that one line from her for Manikandan to do what he has to do.
Because so much of the relationship is so underplayed, and because there is no crude melodrama, the big moments really work. Dada breaks the cliché that looking at your child for the very first time is going to make you bounce around the room with tears of happiness. That may happen if you are ready for it, but Manikandan has a "oh damn, what do I do now!" look. Had the same scene played out with Sindhu, she would have instinctively picked up the child and cradled it on her chest. Later, when the child says " appa ", you expect an outburst of emotion from Manikandan – but both the director and Kavin keep the moment small, subtle, real. I loved the gender-neutral idea of two clueless men – Manikandan and his friend Amit, played by an excellent Harish K – raising a child. The director could have gone overboard with the poopy-diaper cuteness, but he doesn't. He is not after misogynistic jabs, either. The only false notes in the first half – in a film so real – are the way Manikandan randomly gets a job, and again, equally randomly, gets another job. But I liked the takeaway tangential point that we may like to help others, and yet resent it when they become bigger than us. It's one of the many truly human touches in the screenplay, which treats its premise with respect and dignity.
But the second half is a big letdown. It's hard to say what really happened during the writing, but the tone changes completely and an utterly understated and real film begins to feel utterly contrived and cinematic and "commercial". We are basically waiting for the last 15 minutes (Aparna Das is amazing here), and until then, we are left with office colleagues doing the most childish things to reunite the leads. I hate it when two people live in the same city and yet conveniently avoid each other without a proper reason, and perhaps the couple's parents should have been utilised better. By the time we get to Manikandan getting drunk at an office party and doing a dance number, I'd almost given up. Why not use more of the Amit character – the rare male movie character who’s not embarrassed to say “I love you” to his male best friend? Okay, so Sindhu has a reason for the split, but after meeting her, would Manikandan not want an explanation for the things she does. Yes, ego does make certain conversations difficult, but then, why throw the couple together and keep delaying the inevitable?

Dada is a film written by Ganesh K Babu and produced by Ambeth Kumar under the banner Olympia Movies. It stars Kavin and Aparna Das in the lead roles while Bhagyaraj, VTV Ganesh, Pradeep Antony, Harish Kumar, and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by Jen Martin, and the camera is handled by Ezhil Arasu K.
Manikandan (Kavin) is a careless young college student with no foresight about the future. He is in love with Sindhu (Aparna Das), and one day she reveals that she's pregnant. He wants to abort the child but Sindhu wants to keep it. They end up going with her choice, but Mani's irresponsible nature results in Sindhu leaving their baby with Manikandan, and running away from him. He is forced to raise the child - Adithya, all alone. The film deals with the struggles he has to go through in raising Adithya, and how his life changes for the better.
With Dada, one can see how well Kavin has matured as an actor. Not just with his performances but also with his choice of scripts. In a way, one can call this the answer to what would happen if Preethi from Arjun Reddy handed over the baby to Arjun Reddy, asking him to raise it all alone. The only difference is that Manikandan is not as abusive as Arjun.
It is indeed a responsible choice to not make Sindhu look like the villain and give proper justification for her decisions. Despite not having a villain as such, the film is breezy and engaging to an extent. The initial portions of the first half are what negatively affect the film. There are plenty of songs, and they end up becoming speed breakers to an already slow screenplay.
There are plenty of supporting characters who make their entry at various stages of the film and each one makes their mark in their own way. In particular, Harish Kumar is delightful as Manikandan's friend Amit. In the second half, Manikandan's teammates in the office also shoulder the film really well and offer proper support to Kavin through their performances. Aparna Das also comes up with a measured performance as Sindhu.
The film has first-timers as its technical crew, but the quality of their work doesn't show that. Jen Martin's background score is top-notch, and the songs are pleasant to hear. It is just the placement that doesn't sit well. Ezhil Arasu's cinematography does justice to Ganesh K Babu's story and elevates the film in a lot of places. He also works in tandem with editor Kathiresh Alagesan.
Overall, Dada is a sweet feel-good romantic comedy with engagement issues in the first half. The film has its heart in the right place and that powers the film throughout. Technically too the film has a certain quality and that is maintained till the last frame. The humour works out wonderfully in many places and that also helps the film a lot. A harmless watch for the weekend.

Dada Movie Review: A well-written drama made with plenty of heart
Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).
Director Ganesh K Babu's debut Dada revolves around an unplanned pregnancy. The story of the film isn't path-breaking by any means, but what makes it enjoyable is the soulful treatment and witty writing. Take, for instance, the traditional confrontation scene of the lead characters. Ganesh adds a pinch of realism to the sequence by having the heroine’s voice shake in fatigue, given that she has cried for hours; the hero, on the other hand, is too angry to pay attention to her. At one point, he interrupts her to say, " Nee solradhu enakku puriyala; niruthi ozhunga sollu !" The scene may not offer tremendous insight, but attention to these little details makes the conversation relatable and grounded—and you can find this throughout the film. Cast: Kavin, Aparna Das, Pradeep Antony, Harish Kumar Director: Ganesh K Babu
Dada is almost like a marriage between a Radha Mohan film and a Selavaraghavan film. We have cute conversations between a father and his four-year-old about the educational system; we also have the shot of a girl biting the shoulders of her boyfriend in passion. In the hands of an inferior writer, Kavin's Manikandan might have ended up being the pinnacle of toxic masculinity and Aparna's Sindhu would have been the sacrificing angel.
Things, however, are different in Dada . The much-desired redemption in Manikandan's life gets delayed.
When Mani and Sindhu feel that they have hit rock bottom and talk about finding a new rental house, a guy playing PUBG on his phone interrupts them: " Ipdiye ovvoru veeda maari saava poreenga da! " The overwhelming pathos gets quickly transformed into quality dark humour. Such good writing is ably handled by its impressive cast. While Kavin and Aparna pour in much life into the characters, supporting cast members like Harish Kumar seize their opportunities too.
Director Ganesh's Dada can be processed as the story of a man's pursuit of peace.

Kollywood movie Dada starring Kavin and Aparna Das in the lead roles has now made its digital debut on Amazon Prime Video. The movie is directed by Ganesh K Babu, and let’s see how it is.
Manikandan (Kavin) and Sindhu (Aparna Das) are college sweethearts. Sindhu gets pregnant, which makes Manikandan and Sindhu’s parents abandon them. Manikandan asks Sindhu to get aborted, to which the latter doesn’t agree. With no choice left, Manikandan secures a job in a warehouse, and the lovebirds start living together. Manikandan works his fingers to the bone to manage Sindhu’s medical expenses. During this, conflicts start developing between both, and it goes to an extreme situation one day. What is that extreme situation? What happened next? How did that situation change Sindhu and Manikandan’s lives? Watch the movie to know the answers.
Plus Points:
The movie has a simple plot that focuses on basic human emotions and relations. The director presents these emotions in a lovely and heartful manner without trying hard to impress. The characterizations of the lead pair are well-written, making us root for them from the word go. The story is well-established initially, and we are nicely taken into the world of Manikandan and Sindhu.
The conflict point between the lead pair is strong enough, and this crucial scene is nicely presented. The conversations are simple in nature. Kavin, as Manikandan, enlivens the film with his mature performance. He is superb in the emotional part and equally good in funny scenes. A scene where Kavin suggests his colleague not to commit suicide in a casual manner depicts the ease in his acting.
The male protagonist’s journey and transformation are nicely showcased. Aparna Das, the girl who played an important role in Vijay’s Beast, arrests the audience with her captivating performance in Dada. She looks cute is truly one of the biggest advantages of Dada. Her acting during an important scene in the first hour and in the climax portions is too good.
The movie also has got a decent dosage of comedy at places. VTV Ganesh, who played a brief yet impactful role, tickles the funny bones. A scene of him with the protagonist is hilarious, and there is some magic about the veteran actor. Pradeep Antony, as the subordinate of Kavin, does well, and the makers infuse nice humor through his character. The others are good in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The movie becomes a bit slow at times, and the second half could have been still better. As the first half is filled with good emotions and drama, the expectations about the second half will certainly be high, but this part is comparatively not that great.
A few scenes are very conveniently written in the film, and this aspect could have been handled properly. The song over the end could have been avoided to keep the film short and sweet. The movie becomes predictable at times, and hence the impact reduces a bit.
Technical Aspects:
Jen Martin did a compelling job, as the songs and background score are pleasant throughout. The cinematography by Ezhil Arasu is fair, as the frames look easy on the eye. The editing is okay. The production values are adequate. The dialogues are nicely written.
Coming to director Ganesh K Babu, he did a decent job with the film. The way he brought in good drama and emotions in the first hour was too good. He also imbued nice humor in the movie. But as mentioned earlier, the second half doesn’t match the first hour though there was scope for more drama. Nonetheless, Ganesh manages to extract good performances from the artists, and the climax portions are dealt well.
On the whole, Dada has a simple plot that has been told in a natural manner. The exhilarating performances of Kavin and Aparna Das and the emotions are the film’s strengths. The movie’s first half is good, but the second hour slows down. Those who are looking for sensible dramas can watch Dada this weekend.

Their parents disown them and it is left to Manikandan, who is still in college and struggles to make ends meet, to provide for Sindhu.
He goes through a lot of trouble to keep her comfortable and happy. However, when she is in her advanced stages of pregnancy, the couple fights over a costly gift that Sindhu demands at her friend’s wedding.
Annoyed with her demand, Manikandan leaves for his workplace in a huff. As fate would have it, Sindhu gets labour pain soon after he leaves and tries calling him. However, an angry Manikandan does not take her call.
Sindhu then calls her father who comes and gets her admitted to the hospital where she delivers a baby boy.
When Manikandan learns of what happened, he rushes to the hospital only to find his baby lying there unattended.

Wins our hearts
The film narrates a heartwarming and inspiring tale of a man, a boy, and the adorable relationship they share.

The story not only shows how much difficult it is for a man to take care of a newborn but also portrays how, despite the difficulties, it is done without any hullabaloo.
Director Ganesh K Babu shatters the myth and the perception that a man cannot bring up a child on his own.
From finding a woman to breastfeed his child for a sum, every time he is hungry, to carrying the infant to college, Manikandan does everything without complaint or regret. Needless to say, all these sequences win your heart.

The characterisation of Manikandan, in particular, is what impresses us the most in Dada .
The transformation from being an irresponsible college student to turning into a committed and responsible dad is just fantastic.
Also, the calm, collected manner in which he handles everybody around him – from his dad (who once kicked him out of his home) to his team member in the office (who falls in love with him) and Sindhu (who always keeps jumping to wrong conclusions about him) – is just admirable.

Kavin scores handsomely in this complete family entertainer that has a generous dose of humour as well. He plays the part with such conviction that he begins to own it.
Aparna Das comes up with a neat, commendable performance that matches Kavin’s move for move.
The film also has decent performances coming from VTV Ganesh and Harish Kumar.
Jen Martin’s music is a big plus as are cinematographer Ezhil Arasu’s visuals.
On the whole, Dada is an adorable film that wins your heart.
