Yes, they do. Party means fun and enjoyment to them. It means new clothes, lots to eat and a chance to dance and make merry.

2. Do adults like to party?

Yes, adults like to party. To adults, it means a time to get together with friends and family. It means having a break from the monotonous routine life. It is a time to recharge one’s batteries.

3. Do you like loud music in party?

No, personally I don’t. It gives me a headache. But most of my friends do. They think that any party is incomplete without loud music.

You should say:

  • When it took place
  • Where it was
  • Whose party it was
  • What you did there
  •  How you felt about the party

It’s my pleasure to share with you about my attendance at a recent party. It was a birthday party of my friend – Hung, who turned 22 that day. This was also his  farewell party  just before his departure to Canada to  further his study .

The party just happened last month at his own house in the hometown. Hung invited almost all of his  buddies  and we attended the birthday celebration together. Apart from us, there were more than 30 other guests on this occasion. They seemed to be unfamiliar with me but my guess was that they would be mostly Hung’s relatives, neighbors and his father’s colleagues.

We congregated and bought a present for him. It was such astonishment of us when we saw his huge birthday cake. 22 candles of different colors were lit around the cake and the whole house was  redecorated   for the occasion. We sang the birthday song when Hung cut the cake. We congratulated him and wished him an excellent academic term ahead and a  prosperous   life afterwards. Then we tasted the cake and had a good  feast , the foods were quite tasty.

To me, this birthday party brought its own meaning. It was a valuable chance for us to gather together, talk to each other our daily life and share about our childhood memories. This party   left a lasting impression on me  and honestly, it   is still fresh in my mind  until now.

1.    What types of party do people have?

There are many different kinds of party that people can take part in such as birthday party, celebration  party  or  farewell  party.  Each  party  brings  its  own  meaning  but  most  of participants always   feel on the cloud nine .

2.    Why are parties important?

People have parties to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, weddings, or the beginning of a new year. I think it’s important to celebrate these things because they are  milestones  in our lives. Parties are a good way to bring people together, and they’re an opportunity to  let off some steam.

3.    Do you think parties will become more popular in the future?

No, I don’t think anything will change. People have always had parties, and I’m sure they always will in the future. Humans need to  socialise  and enjoy themselves, and parties are one of the best ways to do that.

4.    Do people spend a lot of money on these parties in your country?

I would say my answer is yes. People think they can  splash out  in some special cases such as

  • What was it about?
  • Where was it held?
  • What did people do at the party?
  • Explain what you enjoyed at this party?

Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.

I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favorite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening. I then proceeded to order snacks and appetizers along with the beverages for the evening. The celebrations finally commenced and all the guests had arrived before she came. We welcomed her with the birthday song and hugs from everyone.

We all had an amazing time at the party. Everybody socialized, we played party games, danced and had a lot of fun throughout the evening. The best part was the fact that everyone was happy with the celebration and there were smiles all around me. My sister got gifts from everyone and was all smiles when I gifted her a necklace. She was spellbound and thanked me profusely for organizing such an amazing party.

Last summer, I attended an enchanting garden party that was held in the backyard of my cousin’s vintage home. Situated on the outskirts of town, the venue was adorned with fairy lights, and the soft glow of candles created an ethereal ambiance as the evening descended. The location was meticulously chosen, as it gave a breathtaking view of the sunset.

The guest list was an amalgamation of family and close friends, all of whom shared a bond with the hosts. Not only were my immediate family members present, but also distant relatives whom I hadn’t seen in years. In addition, some college friends of the host added to the jovial atmosphere.

In essence, it was a celebration of my cousin’s engagement. The party was infused with traditional music, and as is customary for our culture, there was a segment dedicated to folk dancing. I remember, amidst the laughter and chatter, the highlight for me was joining the dance circle, the rhythm taking us away as everyone clapped and cheered.

I was engrossed in numerous activities throughout the evening. Initially, I helped with welcoming the guests. Later on, I found myself engrossed in deep conversations with relatives, reminiscing about past memories. As the evening advanced, we indulged in a feast that boasted of traditional dishes, which was a treat to the palate.

What made this party exceptionally memorable for me was the camaraderie and warmth that enveloped the atmosphere. Last Diwali, I had the pleasure of attending a grand party thrown by my close friend Rajan in his ancestral home, situated in the heart of Jaipur. The house, a relic of old Rajasthani architecture, was festooned with marigold garlands and strings of shimmering lights, turning it into a spectacle of colors and brightness.

The attendees comprised a delightful mix of family, close friends, and neighbors. Notably, some guests had flown in from different parts of India just to be part of the festivities. Our shared history, spanning years, echoed in the laughter and conversations that filled the air.

It wasn’t just any party – it was a Diwali cum housewarming soiree. Rajasthani folk songs blended seamlessly with Bollywood hits, setting everyone in a joyous mood. A beautiful rangoli at the entrance greeted guests, its intricate patterns capturing the essence of the festival of lights.

At the party, I was actively involved in various activities. I aided Rajan’s family in greeting guests at the door, ensuring everyone felt welcomed. Later, I got engrossed in a competitive session of card games, a traditional Diwali pastime. The delectable spread of food, ranging from spicy curries to sweet jalebis, was another highlight of the evening.

The reason this party remains etched in my memory is the sense of unity and shared joy it exuded. Despite our diverse backgrounds and busy lives, we came together to celebrate not just Diwali, but the enduring bonds of friendship and kinship. The amalgamation of traditional customs with modern revelry made it an unforgettable experience.

Sample 3:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

A couple of months ago, I was invited to a party in celebration of my friend Sarah’s 30th birthday. Hosted in her spacious penthouse in downtown London, the evening overlooked the city’s sprawling skyline, lit brilliantly against the night.

The attendees, an eclectic mix, were mostly our university mates, colleagues from her workplace, and some close family members. All of us, though diverse in our backgrounds, had one thing in common: our deep appreciation for Sarah. The atmosphere, thus, was thick with familiarity and fond memories.

Interestingly, the party was themed “Retro”. The apartment was decked out in decor reminiscent of the 70s and 80s, with vibrant colors, disco balls, and vinyl records everywhere. Music from those eras played throughout the evening, prompting everyone, including me, to groove to the beats.

I spent the initial part of the evening mingling, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. Later, as the music took a more energetic turn, I found myself dancing, laughing, and even singing along to some karaoke classics. The food was an array of delectable finger foods and classic cocktails, and I indulged heartily.

The primary reason I enjoyed this party so much was the sense of nostalgia it evoked. The theme, coupled with the presence of old friends, made it feel like a trip down memory lane. Additionally, the laughter, camaraderie, and general atmosphere of warmth turned the evening into a truly unforgettable one.

Sample 4:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

Last December, right before the holiday rush, I attended a party thrown by a childhood friend, Maya, in her family’s ancestral home in the countryside. This house, standing majestically against the backdrop of rolling hills, provided an idyllic setting for what would be an evening to remember.

The attendees spanned generations. While our school friends formed the core group, Maya had also invited her extended family, neighbors, and a few colleagues. The beautiful part? Despite many of us meeting for the first time, there was an unmistakable bond of joy.

The occasion was a Christmas-cum-reunion party. True to its dual theme, the house was aglow with twinkling fairy lights and adorned with holly wreaths. Carolers occasionally filled the air with festive tunes, and laughter echoed throughout.

My time at the party was divided between various activities. Initially, I was engrossed in catching up with friends, swapping stories of our recent adventures. As the night progressed, we played a few rounds of charades, evoking hearty laughter. I even tried my hand at baking in the massive kitchen, where we churned out dozens of mince pies.

Reflecting on it, my enjoyment stemmed not just from the activities, but from the genuine warmth that permeated the gathering. Amidst the familiar festive fervor was a sense of coming home. The combination of a picturesque setting, familiar faces, and the spirit of the season made it an unforgettable affair.

Sample 5:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

A few months ago, during the vibrant festival of Dashain, I had the unique pleasure of attending a party in my friend Arjun’s family home nestled in the heart of Kathmandu Valley. The traditional Newari house, with its intricately carved wooden windows and courtyards, was the perfect backdrop for this celebration.

The attendees were primarily Arjun’s extensive family, ranging from elderly grandparents to young nieces and nephews. Besides family, a close-knit group of friends, including myself, had the honor of joining in these familial festivities. The age range was diverse, yet the energy and enthusiasm were universally high.

The party was a classic Dashain celebration. The courtyard echoed with the rhythmic beats of the madal, while folk songs filled the air. Strings of marigold adorned every possible corner, and the tantalizing aroma of traditional foods wafted around.

My evening was a mix of cherished activities. Engaging in ‘Deusi-Bhailo’ with some of the younger attendees was a delightful experience. I also spent a significant time enjoying the local delicacies, from momos to sel roti, and was fortunate to receive ‘tika’ and ‘jamara’ from Arjun’s grandparents, a blessing that symbolizes prosperity.

What made this party exceptionally memorable was its seamless blend of tradition and camaraderie. While I reveled in the cultural nuances, it was the genuine warmth, affection, and the sense of community that made it a truly unparalleled experience. The guest list was a delightful blend. Primarily family, spanning from Simran’s grandparents to the youngest nephews and nieces, were present. A few neighbors and an assortment of friends, including me, added to the lively crowd. Regardless of the diversity in age and relationships, the atmosphere was saturated with merriment.

True to Punjabi style, this was a pre-wedding party, a combination of ‘sangeet’ and ‘mehendi’. The courtyard echoed with the dhol’s beats, setting the rhythm for bhangra and gidha performances. Fairy lights twinkled above, and the aroma of buttery delicacies filled the air.

During the party, I immersed myself in various activities. Initially, I sat with the ladies, having intricate mehendi designs painted on my hands. In mid-summer last year, I was privileged to attend a captivating garden party hosted by my colleague, Lucy, in her picturesque home located on the outskirts of Bristol. The vast expanse of green, punctuated by colorful blooms and fairy lights, set a magical ambience for the evening.

Lucy’s circle, diverse in age and profession, comprised the attendees. It was an intriguing mix of artists, corporate professionals, teachers, and students, each bringing their own flavor to the evening’s atmosphere. Though many were strangers to me at first, by night’s end, new friendships were forged.

The theme of the evening was “Vintage Elegance.” There were phonographs playing classics from the ’40s, guests donned dresses and suits reminiscent of that era, and even the cocktails served had a touch of old-world charm.

My evening was a delightful whirlwind. After being introduced to a few guests, I found myself engaged in riveting discussions about art and history. Later, I joined a group playing vintage board games, which turned out to be surprisingly competitive. As the evening wore on, we danced under the stars to the timeless tunes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

The grandeur of the Rajasthani haveli, with its ornate archways and courtyards, was juxtaposed beautifully against the modern twinkling fairy lights and lanterns.

The attendees encapsulated a spectrum of ages and relationships: elderly aunts sharing tales of yore, enthusiastic young cousins bursting crackers, and friends from different walks of life, each mingling and reveling in the festive atmosphere.

This wasn’t just any Diwali party; it was a harmonious fusion of tradition and contemporary celebrations. There was a dedicated corner for a Rangoli competition, while another area buzzed with the youth challenging each other in card games, a common Diwali tradition.

My evening was a beautiful blend of activities. I took part in the Rangoli competition, trying my best to craft a vibrant design alongside my sister. Sample 9:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

Two summers ago, I attended a spectacular party held at a countryside villa just outside London. The location was a vision with sprawling gardens, a serene pond, and the villa’s regal architecture acting as the backdrop to the evening’s festivities.

The guest list was a curated mix of around fifty people. While many were close friends of the host, I recognized a few colleagues and even a couple of university professors. Interestingly, the age spectrum varied, creating a vibrant dynamic throughout the night.

It was described as a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” party. Everywhere I looked, there were references to Shakespeare’s play: enchanting fairy lights, whimsical decor, and guests donning ethereal masks and costumes. The theme, combined with the soft glow of twilight, made it feel as if we had been transported to a magical realm.

My time at the party was both relaxing and invigorating. Early on, I engaged in enlightening conversations with acquaintances about literature and art. Sample 10:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

Last spring, in the heart of the serene Himachal Pradesh, I attended an enthralling party in a quaint village near Shimla. Nestled amidst apple orchards with a panoramic view of snow-capped peaks, the house stood as a testimony to traditional Himachali architecture, complete with slate roofs and wooden carvings.

The attendees primarily consisted of my extended family, some local village elders, and a handful of travelers who were drawn to the melodies and mirth. The fascinating mix of my traditional Himachali kinfolk with global travelers made the atmosphere uniquely vibrant.

It was, in essence, a ‘Harvest Party’, celebrating the bounty of apple orchards. The decor was simple yet authentic: fresh apple garlands, candles, and folk motifs. And as the sun set, the sounds of the traditional Himachali ‘Nati’ dance began to resonate, accompanied by rhythmic beats of drums and flutes.

The evening for me was a beautiful fusion of old and new. I helped in preparing Siddu, a traditional Himachali delicacy, under the watchful eyes of my grandmother. As night enveloped the orchard, I joined in the Nati, trying to match steps with the elders, their energy unparalleled. Later, seated around a bonfire, we exchanged tales — from local legends to travelers’ adventures.

Sample 11:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

One unforgettable evening last winter, I found myself in the vibrant state of Haryana, attending a party in a sprawling farmhouse near Rohtak. Surrounded by vast mustard fields in full bloom, the venue resonated with the golden hues of the setting sun and the mesmerizing beats of Haryanvi folk music.

The gathering was predominantly made up of my extended family, with a sprinkling of our neighbors and friends from the village. Additionally, there were a few urban folks, relatives from Delhi and Gurgaon, who had driven down especially for this event.

Labeling it merely as a party would be an understatement. It was a grand pre-wedding celebration, known locally as the “Ladies’ Sangeet”. Women, dressed in vibrant chunris and ghagras, sang traditional wedding songs, while the men, clad in white kurtas and turbans, danced the robust ‘ Ghoomar ‘ with unmatched enthusiasm.

My participation was multifaceted. Initially, I was engrossed in a dholak session, attempting to learn the rhythmic patterns of Haryanvi songs. Later, I joined a group performing the Ghoomar, laughing heartily each time I missed a step. As the night deepened, I found myself engrossed in tales of Haryanvi valour and love, narrated by elderly uncles.

The allure of this celebration was twofold. Firstly, it was the raw, unfiltered essence of Haryana’s rich culture, manifesting in music, dance, and tales. Secondly, it was the warmth of kinship and community, where every chuckle, song, and dance move was an expression of shared joy and anticipation for the forthcoming nuptials.

Sample 12:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

A few winters ago, I had the privilege of attending a mesmerizing party in Udaipur, the “City of Lakes”, situated in the regal state of Rajasthan. The party was hosted in a palace that overlooked the tranquil Lake Pichola, its reflection shimmering under the moonlit sky.

Most attendees were family members, along with a few friends of the host and some international guests. Their attendance was particularly intriguing because they were completely enthralled by the Rajasthani ethos and vibrancy on display.

Labelled as a “Cultural Gala”, the event was a tribute to Rajasthan’s rich tapestry of traditions and arts. Everywhere I looked, there was a splash of colour: women in lehengas and traditional odhnis, men donning turbans and dhotis, and performers in vibrant costumes telling tales through their dances.

I was thoroughly engaged throughout the evening. I began by watching a soulful rendition of “Kalbelia”, the iconic Rajasthani dance. Later, I was coaxed into trying my hand at playing the “Ravanahatha”, a traditional musical instrument. As the evening matured, I got lost in the stories narrated by local puppeteers, a staple of Rajasthani entertainment.

The reason this party remains close to my heart is manifold. It was not just a celebration, but an immersive experience. The party was a perfect blend of old-world charm and new-world finesse. Above all, it was a testament to the timeless beauty and richness of Rajasthani culture, making it an evening of learning, appreciation, and sheer joy.

Sample 13:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

I fondly recall a jubilant evening spent in Amritsar, Punjab, during the heart of spring two years ago. The venue was a vast courtyard of a traditional Punjabi house, adorned with phulkari fabrics, myriad fairy lights, and set against the harmonious backdrop of a pind (village).

The gathering was an interesting blend of our expansive family, neighbors from adjoining villages, and a few of our relatives who had come from various parts of the world. Their diverse backgrounds only added to the rich tapestry of the event.

This wasn’t just any party; it was a “Vaisakhi Bhangra Bash”, celebrating both the Punjabi New Year and the harvest season. The atmosphere was imbued with the spirit of gratitude and joy, palpable in every corner.

My evening was a whirlwind of activities. While initially, I was engrossed in a fierce dhol-playing competition with my cousins, the highlight was undoubtedly the bhangra. Under a canopy of stars, I danced with abandon, trying to match the exhilarating pace of the beats. As the festivities peaked, I also indulged in a hearty meal of makki di roti and sarson da saag, a culinary delight that’s quintessentially Punjabi.

The magic of that evening lay not just in the dance or the food, but in the inherent warmth and camaraderie of Punjabi culture. The party was an epitome of Punjab’s zest for life, making it an unforgettable experience that transcended mere celebration.

Sample 14:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

Several summers ago, I found myself amidst the enchanting landscape of Cornwall, England. The party was hosted in a magnificent, centuries-old manor overlooking the rugged coastline, with the ambient noise of waves crashing and gulls calling.

The attendees were a delightful blend of old friends, a few acquaintances from the literary community, and some locals who were friends of the host. Notably, there was a renowned author in our midst, which made the conversations particularly captivating.

The essence of this soirée was a midsummer night’s literary fest. Every nook and corner of the sprawling estate narrated tales of its bygone era, which complemented the evening’s theme impeccably.

My role at the party was manifold. Initially, I took to reciting some verses from my favorite poets under the canopy of twinkling fairy lights. As the night progressed, I became an eager listener, absorbing the many stories and discussions around classic English literature. At the stroke of midnight, I found myself in an intense debate on Brontë versus Austen, fortified by sips of Earl Grey tea.

This particular evening remains etched in my memory, not solely because of the literary fervor. Rather, it was the amalgamation of the serene surroundings, the manor’s history, and the company of like-minded bibliophiles. In essence, it was an evening where time seemed to stand still, and the world of books came alive in the most magical way possible.

Sample 15:- Describe a Party that You Enjoyed.

One of the most memorable parties I ever attended was in late autumn, roughly three years ago. Set against the backdrop of a rustic barnhouse nestled amidst sprawling golden fields, the scenery was breathtakingly picturesque.

The attendees comprised an eclectic mix: close friends from university, colleagues from work, family members, and even some international guests who happened to be mutual friends of the host. Amongst the crowd was also a local indie band, which added a unique twist to the usual guest list.

Dubbed as an “Autumnal Harvest Fiesta”, this wasn’t your typical barn dance. The setting sun cast a warm, amber hue, illuminating the pumpkins, hay bales, and fall wreaths that adorned the venue. Laughter echoed, and the air was thick with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

I was in high spirits throughout the event. After savoring a delicious pumpkin pie and trying my hand at apple bobbing, I found myself dancing energetically to the music. But what truly elevated the evening was the moment everyone huddled around a bonfire, sharing stories and singing along to acoustic guitar tunes.

Reflecting on why I cherished this party, it wasn’t just the activities or the setting. It was the profound sense of community and warmth that permeated the air. In a world that often feels rushed, that evening was a beautiful pause, a reminder of the simpler joys life offers.

Birthday Party Essay

Birthdays are among the most significant days in a person's life because they not only state their age but its also about celebrating an individual's life experiences. Birthday celebrations are essential for all of us, but they are particularly significant for children. Here are a few sample essays on ‘Birthday Party’ that students can refer to for their classwork and projects.

Birthday Party Essay

For my birthday party this year, my family and I decided to celebrate it at the new bowling alley that opened in our town. I was amazed with the cool and comfortable ambience. There were 9 majestic rows for bowling. We booked one for ourselves and wore the bowling shoes they gave us. I did not play that well since it was my first time. My parents, however, were frequent bowlers and played very well. They taught me how to hold the ball properly and how to correctly aim for the pins. I was not able to get a strike but did hit many spares. We cut my birthday cake there and my parents sang the birthday song for me. I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday with my parents.

A birthday should be a joyful occasion. However, it looked like no one had thought of my birthday this year. Nobody showed up to wish me a happy birthday when I got up in the morning. I had no messages or calls from my friends wishing me a happy birthday. My parents didn't seem to understand how miserable it made me to be ignored. My mom gave me errands to run and I was complaining about it the entire time. But when I returned home, I got a huge surprise. All my friends and family had gathered to wish me. They had decorated the house with beautiful flowers, cards and gifts.

The vacant dining table was now covered with trays of spaghetti, fruit tarts, colourful jellies, and crispy chips and delicious pastries. Everyone started singing as my mother brought out a huge chocolate-vanilla cake. I was overjoyed with so much love and happiness. We ended up playing many birthday party games—musical chairs, pass the parcel, newspaper dance. My friend won 2 games and won chocolates. It was a lot of fun. That evening, while I was getting ready for bed, I reflected on how wonderful it was to have such a nice birthday celebration.

Birthdays are a significant part of everyone's life. It makes people feel special on that day and deepens their gratitude.

My Thirteenth Birthday Party

I will always cherish the memory of my thirteenth birthday party—we visited an amusement park. All of my close cousins and friends were invited to the celebration. My parents drove us and took us to the theme park. I was astounded by the sight of the big rides at the park as soon as we arrived. People dressed up as clowns and performed stunts that were quite amusing. We waited in line to get on the roller coaster, which is one of my favourite rides. The ride was incredible. It rose to such a great height before dropping suddenly—it was a thrilling experience. We also enjoyed other rides, including a merry-go-round. Before we went home, we had dinner at a nearby restaurant where we cut my favourite vanilla cake. It was one of my best birthday parties.

My Sixteenth Birthday Party

I celebrated my sixteenth birthday this year. In our family, turning 16 is a big deal for women. My parents went all out and booked a banquet hall for my birthday and invited all my friends and close family members. My mother and I went shopping for my birthday dress. I chose a lilac gown with flowers and glitter on it. When I reached the venue, I was astonished to see how beautiful everything looked. My friends and family had already arrived before me and started singing happy birthday when I entered. We clicked millions of pictures, danced to our favourite songs and played our childhood games. My friends made me open their presents and they were all so amazing. My parents and grandparents were so happy looking at me and enjoying my day. They gave me a beautiful necklace with my initials on it and I wear it everyday. I am grateful to have such thoughtful family and friends.

Ways To Celebrate Birthdays

There are many ideas children can come up with to celebrate their special day. But sometimes, we all get stuck and wonder how we can celebrate our birthday. So, here are some ideas that you can use—

Amusement Parks | No matter how old you get, rides and retro video games never fail to impress you. Plan a day at an amusement park, call the manager ahead of time and make the arrangements that suit your wants. You can get a private area booked for food and beverages.

Home It In | Celebrating at your home is one of the common ideas that always work. Decorate your living room with balloons, photos and banners and invite all your close friends and family. You can order food and cake from a caterer and they’ll take care of everything.

Cafes/Restaurants | Birthday celebrations at a cafe or a restaurant makes everything easy and breezy. You can book any local cafe for a few hours and ask them to decorate it for your birthday. They’ll take care of food, beverages, decor, and cleaning. You only have to show up with your friends and family and have a great time.

Describe a Party [IELTS Speaking]

Describe a Party [IELTS Speaking]

In part 2 of the IELTS speaking test, you may be asked to describe a party. This could seem like a daunting task, but in this lesson I will show you everything you need to know to give a great description.

Today, we will look at:

  • Possible cue cards for describing parties
  • Language for describing parties
  • Sample answers

IELTS Cue Cards: Describe a Party

When preparing for IELTS, you should not memorise answers to questions because there are thousands of possible versions. Instead, it is helpful to think about common question types and topics .

One topic (or sub-topic) that may occur is parties . Of course, this is part of the wider idea of friends and socialising , so you could study party language alongside friendship language. Parties are also related to the topics of festivals, culture, and traditions .

It is very important to carefully read the cue card that you are given so that you do not assume something that is not included on it. As such, we will practise analysing possible cue cards here:

Describe a Party you Attended

First of all, a commonly reported cue card about parties is this one:

Describe a party you have attended. You should say: – what type of party it was – where the party was held – who attended the party and describe what you did at that party.

Here, the question is quite straightforward. The thing you are supposed to describe is an event that took place in the past. It must be some form of party and you must give details about it, including where it was and who attended. You should also talk a little about your own interactions there.

Describe a Party You Enjoyed

Describe a party that you enjoyed going to. You should say: – what the party was about – where the party was held – what people did during the party and explain what you enjoyed about this party.

This cue card is very similar but you can note some important differences. In the first cue card, you could easily have said that you attended a party and disliked it or had no strong opinion about it. However, this cue card requires that you enjoyed the party. (You could also just pretend that you enjoyed it.) Here, you need to describe the party and then relate your feelings.

Planning your Answer

As I said before, you should not aim to memorise answers. This is a bad way to prepare for any part of the IELTS test. However, you can prepare for this sort of question in a few ways:

  • Practise language related to the topic
  • Practise thinking up ideas quickly
  • Think of easily adapted ideas

The third idea is quite useful here. Often, in IELTS, you are given cue cards that say “describe a person/place/object” and then give more information. For example “describe a person who you admire” or “describe a person who you knew when you were young.” These could easily be adapted to be the same person. As long as you do not give a memorised answer, but instead adapt your answer to fit any version of that cue card, you will be fine.

Here, we can think of a party that we have attended and then adapt that answer for the second cue card. We could even adapt it to other cue cards that might change this topic: “describe a party that you threw for your friends” or “describe a party that you didn’t enjoy.”

Of course, doing this may require being imaginative or even lying slightly, but for some people this might be easier than thinking up an honest answer from their memory. After all, even a native speaker like me has trouble thinking up a developed answer in just one minute!

Words to Describe a Party

A big part of being prepared for IELTS topics is knowing the right language to use. Of course, there are no required words, but having a good vocabulary is really important for IELTS. I have written and spoken many times about how to learn vocabulary and how to avoid common mistakes, but it is really important to have a wide range of words and to use them accurately .

In this case, you should look for words that are specific to parties. Because there are so many kinds of parties, this can be quite difficult, but if you have one or two parties in mind, then you can learn vocabulary related to those.

Here are some words to describe parties. We will start with words to describe a party’s atmosphere:

Types of Party

Here are some types of party:

There are, of course, many other types of party and these might be culturally specific. If you know of other ones and want to talk about them, you can read up on Google. Make sure to find a source that was written by a native speaker of English.

different types of party

Sample Answers

Below, I will give sample band 9 answers for the two above versions of the task “describe a party”:

Describe a party you have attended.

describe a party that you attended

A few weeks ago, I went to a pool party at a hotel near my house. There was a bar and a stage for musicians to perform, as well as a swimming pool and various loungers for people to sit or lie on. The place was surrounded by palm trees and other tropical vegetation. In the beginning, there were only a few people there but over the course of the day it became more and more popular. Eventually, the place was full and it was very lively, with many groups of people sitting around and having fun.

Although I live in a hot country, it was a very cold day and so the water was freezing. I hadn’t realised and jumped into the pool. I got quite a shock from the water and from the expressions of other people that went in, they mostly felt the same. In the end, I spent most of the day out of the water, relaxing in the sun with a beer. I also enjoyed listening to the live music and speaking with other guests at the party, most of whom I had never met before. The atmosphere was quite friendly and so it was a good place to socialise.

I gave information about the party and its location in order to be descriptive. One word that I used to describe the atmosphere was “lively.” This is a great word that can impart a lot of meaning.

Sample Answer #2

Here is the second of our cue cards for today:

Describe a party that you enjoyed going to.

describe a party you enjoyed going to

Several years ago, I went back to Scotland, the country where I was born. Whilst there, my family held a big party at my aunt’s house. Because I live on the other side of the world, it is not often that I see my family and certain people like uncles and cousins I see only once every five or six years.

On this particular occasion, my aunt held a garden party for the whole family, and this was the first time in about a decade that I had seen all of these people. We spent all day and all night in the garden, eating and drinking and talking. It felt wonderful to reconnect with my cousins and their own families, many of whom I had not met before.

We had a barbeque and there was a wide selection of beers, wines, and ciders on offer. Everyone had a great time and there were even games played in the evening. I really loved seeing these people again and learning about their lives. It was a great atmosphere and everyone was feeling very jovial. We finally headed home at about three o’clock in the morning!

In this answer, I have described a different kind of party and given lots of details about it. Some useful words here are “reconnect” and “jovial.” I focused on the social element more than the physical surroundings because in this case that was the most important aspect.

Describe a party that you attend or describe a party.

Sample answer:-, introduction.

Well, I am an extrovert type of person who likes to enjoy and every moment of life. To enjoy my life, many times I organize parties such as birthday party and so on. Sometimes, I like to attend parties of other ones such as my relatives or friends. Here I would like to talk about a birthday party which I attend last year. I describe it briefly.

talk about a party

On the day of the party, I went to his home because his parents organized this party at his own house . His house was decorated with lights and flowers. It looked like a bride. Then, the party started at 8 o’clock when my friend cut his birthday cake. This cake was baked by his own mom because his mother has open a bakery.

What Happened in Party?

When he cut the cake, all the persons who were present in that party started clapping for him and sung birthday theme song. After it, we gave gifts to the birthday boy. In addition, the food stalls were also set up there. I ate a variety of food there such as Chinese, Italian, and other continental food. The food on stalls was mouth-watering. I also tasted that birthday cake. It was so delicious. Apart from it, after eating food, I danced on the dance floor with my friend. We danced together on rock music. Also, I clicked some photographs in this party. I keep these pictures save on my mobile phone. Whenever I see these pictures, I recall the sweet memories of my life.

All in all, this party was too good and full of fun. I will never forget it during my whole life.

Sample Answer

Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.

I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favourite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening.

(267 words)

Sample Answer 2:

Frankly speaking, I am not a party buff and usually attend only those parties wherein I know some people or there is something exciting going on. The party that I am going to talk about is the one I went to last year. It was my friend’s friend birthday bash and she invited all of us. Initially, I was fine with going there but later on my friend told me she cannot come along and I almost cancelled my plan, when my friend’s friend actually called and invited me again to come.

Hesitantly, I said a yes and I would say that was the best yes I had ever said. The party was in Rishikesh, a tourist spot in Uttarakhand, India. It was a night party and there were campfires, music, dance, games and a lot of interesting people. To my surprise, Anusha i.e. my friend’s friend knew a lot of people and had invited them all. And I met and talked to many interesting people that I might otherwise never have come across! This included the self-employed interior designer; marathon runners; entrepreneurs, writers. It was exciting to talk to them and find out how they are connected with the host.

Not only were the people great, but the food and other services were also fantastic. There were stalls of different kinds and one could eat whatever they wish. And it was really tasty food too!!

What’s more, I discovered that actually, I did know quite a few people there after all. I am almost won over. Next time she offers to host a party, I might even find myself looking forward to it, you never know.

Describe a birthday celebration that you attended recently

Profile picture for user deepak429

I would like to talk about a birthday celebration that I attended 2/3 months ago. It was one of my friends' birthday who turned 25 that day. My friend's name is Ryan and his parents wanted to celebrate his birthday just before his departure to United Kingdom. Ryan invited almost all of his close friends and 6-7 of us attended the birthday celebration together. Apart from us, there were as many as 100 other people present on the occasion. I did not know most of them but my guess is that they would be mostly Ryan's relatives, neighbors and his father's colleagues.

The party was celebrated at my friend's house at tohana. We went there together and bought a present for the Ryan. After reaching there, Ryan and his parents warmly welcomed us. Later Ryan introduced us to his relatives and to some of his neighbors. We were astonished when we saw the huge birthday cake. 25 candles of different colors were lit around the cake and the whole house was redecorated for the occasion. Anybody could say that some occasion was going on in this house without knowing anything.

We sang the birthday song when Ryan cut the cake. We congratulated him and wished him a prosperous life ahead. Then we ate cake and had a good feast. The foods were delicious and good. We, friends of our circle, went to visit a nearby place and sang different songs. In the evening we went to Ryan's house again and attended a raffle draw. That was a very exciting part of the birthday celebration. Then after few minutes we left the party and went our homes.

IELTS Cue Card Sample 111 – A birthday celebration you have attended recently

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a birthday celebration you have attended recently.

You should say:

  • whose birthday it was
  • who attended the party
  • where it took place

and explain how much you enjoyed this birthday celebration.

Model Answer 1:

In this busy life, we don’t really get enough time to enjoy much social and family life, despite our best efforts and intention. Still, whatever spare time we manage, we try to make the best use of it, just like I did recently by attending a birthday party.

It was the birthday of one of my close friends who lives in a different city.  I would have almost forgotten about this birthday if I hadn’t tried to organize the desk of my living room. In fact, it was on that desk that I found the little note, I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, about the special occasion and its date. Luckily it fell on a weekend, so it was really a great opportunity for me, after all, to enjoy a little social life.

Anyway, the “birthday” party took place at the residence of my good friend who lives in a rather large house with his entire family, including his parents, wife and a couple of his siblings. The birthday party was also attended by a number of our common friends and a number of close relatives of my friend. I think that there were about 50 people altogether, who attended the birthday party, and all of them were enjoying their time in a very friendly atmosphere while enjoying some snacks and soft drinks also at the same time. Finally, the time for the cake cutting ceremony arrived, and we all sang the “happy birthday” song to wish a very happy and long life for my friend. After spending about a couple of happy and fun hours at the party, we ended it on a good note with a light dinner meal to satisfy our appetite.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the birthday party of my friend as it allowed me to forget about the worries of my life for a while. Besides, at the party, I felt free to laugh with my heart’s content and crack any jokes with my friends after a long time. All in all, it was a great birthday celebration which made everybody happy.

Model Answer:

Thank you for this interesting cue card topic. I have indeed had the opportunity to attend many great parties before, and today, I would be more than happy to talk about one of those parties that I probably enjoyed a bit more than the others.

This party was held about 6 years ago when one of my close friends threw a party after he graduated from an engineering college. Prior to that, I celebrated my own graduation but this close friend of mine couldn’t attend my graduation party because of an important job interview that he needed to attend in another city. So, when he asked me to join his graduation party, I naturally became very excited and started to wait to have a blast at the party.

By the way, even though, he was a very close friend of mine, we actually attended different universities. In fact, I studied Business Administration at a regular university while my friend studied at a specialized engineering college. So, when I arrived at his home, where he was having his graduation party, and saw a few dozens of unknown faces (from his engineering college), I felt a little awkward initially. My friend, of course, was smart enough to understand this, so he immediately introduced me to all of his college friends.

Anyway, as I got introduced to everybody there, the party became really lively with people drinking and eating while cracking jokes at each other. We were taking each other’s pictures, apart from being videoed. My friend even shared some of his rare but funny pictures from his childhood. We sang some songs in the way we like without caring much about the tone and our vocal and a few young chaps were even dancing.

Anyway, what I really enjoyed about this graduation party was that we all laughed to our hearts’ content without any holding back. Besides, we also shared many of our life stories with each other which taught us a lot of things about life and realities. Finally, as long as we were there, we all forgot about the worries of our life.

To attempt this question, you must narrow down the essential questions on the given topic to answer within the given time. Consider the sample Cue Card below. Study the types of questions that have been formulated based on the cue card and how to go about with your response:

Describe a wedding you have attended

You should say:

  • Where it was?
  • Who was getting married?
  • Why did you attend this wedding?

Sample Answer 1

One of the memorable wedding functions that I have attended and enjoyed the most was the wedding function of my cousin Vivan. It was just last month that I happened to attend his wedding. I remember distinctly that it was the first-ever function I attended physically after the covid lockdown. Just the thought of meeting my family members was so joyful that I took 5 days’ leave from the office to attend the program.

Vivan is the eldest cousin amongst all my cousins from the maternal side of the family. He and his girlfriend have been in a long-term relationship for the past 3 years and planned to get married last month. The wedding was held in Delhi’s Eleven Course marriage venue. It was lavishly adorned, with several lights, candles, and flowers adorning the space. Three glitzy wedding picture books were displayed, depicting tables at the formal gate’s center. The bride and groom looked stunning in their wedding dress.

Personally, I had a great time at this wedding. I adored the way it was celebrated, the way everyone talked about the bride and groom, and how joyful and lovely everyone was. It was a joyous occasion, and I thoroughly liked every aspect. I was able to meet several members of my family that I would not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. I made the most of the opportunity and took several photographs with the bride and groom. To commemorate his wedding day, I got my cousin a present. It was indeed a memorable wedding.

Sample Answer 2

I have always been an ardent fan of Indian weddings. I adore the kind of traditions and culture we follow during this time. Undoubtedly, organizing a wedding is nothing less than celebrating a festival in the house.

So, talking about one of the memorable weddings I attended, it was in Udaipur. My eldest sister was getting married, and she always wanted a destination wedding. So, back in 2018, my parents had organized a lavish one in Bhairav Garh Palace, Udaipur.

The wedding was organized in mid-November; thus, the weather was somewhat supportive. While we had to deal with scorching heat during the daytime, the nights were breezy and cool. One of the best things about this wedding was it was the first of our generation. Since we are just two siblings, the entire obligation for arrangement fell upon me. Right from shopping to ensuring everybody’s departure at the right time, I was on my toes throughout the wedding.

We stayed in the palace for four days, overlooking every arrangement. This was the time when my sister simply sat back and relished her time of being a queen of the family. All in all, those days were enthralling, and the memories we created at her wedding are long-lasting.

Sample Answer 3

I am an introvert who doesn’t like to socialize much with people. So, attending a function or a gathering is a  big deal for me. Early last year, I learned that one of my close elder sisters, Gargi, was getting married, and I felt obligated to attend her wedding since she was so important to me. She always cared for me like a kind caring older sister when I was a child, and we share a very special bond.

In September, the wedding ceremony took place in Goa. My sister chose the venue for the wedding. She had always desired a quiet wedding, where she could spend time with her close friends and family following the wedding rites. The wedding took place along the ocean and was stunningly gorgeous, with fresh flowers, lights, and candles. The principal theme of the wedding was pink and yellow. Thus all of the guests were asked to wear clothing in any shade of these hues.

I enjoyed every bit of the celebration. Particularly meeting my other cousins and relatives. The food was delicious and had a wonderful variety of snacks. I needed to attend her wedding since she, along with her husband and in-laws, decided to relocate to the UK, after the wedding. I wanted to spend some time with her before moving to the UK and sharing some of her precious moments with her personally. She looked gorgeous that day. I personally liked her wedding attire.

  • Obligated – require or compel (someone) to undertake a legal or moral duty. Eg : Vinay felt obligated to let Garima read the letter.
  • Hues – a color or shade. Eg : The orange, green and red hues in the park gave it a nearly surreal appearance.
  • Socialize – participate in social activities; mix socially with others. Eg : Rudra and Anita socialize easily.
  • Attire – clothes, especially fine or formal ones. Eg : Else was dressed in all violet attire.
  • Delicious – highly pleasant to the taste. Eg : Catherine cooks delicious food.
