On this website, you will find information about the dissertations and theses of the University of Helsinki and the evaluation process and the publishing of theses.

Collection of dissertations and theses

The dissertations and theses of the University of Helsinki can be searched in the Library catalogue Helka . You can search Helka for both printed and digital theses.

The digital theses can also be found in Helda, the digital archive of the University of Helsinki. If the author has not given a permission to publish the thesis, only the abstract and the metadata are available in Helda . In this case, the full-text of the thesis can be read in the premises of the Helsinki University Library.

In the collections of Helsinki University Library, there are digital doctoral dissertations from the end of the 1990's onwards and the digital version is available for most of the doctoral dissertations that have been published in the 2000's. Only the summary part of the article-based dissertations is usually available. The articles of the dissertation can be searched from the library catalogue Helka , for example.

Since the middle of the 2010's, the number of the digital master’s theses available has increased strongly. The scope of the collection varies from one faculty to another. The theses that have been written during the past few years as a rule are available in digital format, either openly in Helda or in the premises of the library .

Every year the number of digital master’s theses in the collection increases with thousands of theses.

Publishing doctoral dissertations

The doctoral dissertations of the University of Helsinki are published in the open digital archive of the University of Helsinki, Helda .

Helsinki University Library manages the collecting of the information concerning the doctoral dissertations as well as the public defence of doctoral dissertations. The information gathered is utilized in the library and in the university communications.

Submitting the master’s thesis for evaluation, evaluation process, and publishing the thesis

The master’s theses are submitted to E-thesis system for evaluation. The system is maintained by the Teaching and Student services of the University and Helsinki University Library. The evaluation process is managed in E-thesis system.

When the thesis has been evaluated and accepted in the faculty, it is possible for the student to give a permission to publish the thesis. The university recommends the open publishing of the thesis. The publishing gives the student the opportunity to promote the thesis and the thesis gets more visibility.

The abstract and other metadata of every thesis will be made available in the open digital archive Helda . If the student accepts the permission to publish, the full-text of the thesis will be available in Helda as well.

If the permission to publish has not been accepted, the thesis is available for reading only in the premises of the library .

The evaluation statements of theses are archived in the appendices of the minutes of faculty meetings. When an evaluation has been completed, the statements are removed from the E-thesis system.

Submitting bachelor’s thesis for evaluation

In some faculties, the bachelor's theses are submitted for evaluation in E-thesis system. When the bachelor’s thesis has been evaluated, it will be archived in the E-thesis system.

The archived bachelor’s theses can be read only in the premises of the Helsinki University Library . The bachelor's theses, abstracts or metadata are not published in the open digital archive Helda.

The evaluation statements are archived in the Teaching and Student services of the University. The statements will be removed from a E-thesis system after the evaluation has been completed.

Publishing of Licentiate thesis

Also the Licentiate theses are published in digital form in the Helsinki University digital archive Helda. When you want to publish your Licentiate thesis, please contact the Helsinki University Library ([email protected]).

Evaluating of theses

Both the staff of the University of Helsinki and the outside evaluators can use the E-thesis system when evaluating theses.

E-thesis on digitaalinen opinnäytteiden palautus-, arviointi- ja arkistointijärjestelmä. Se syöttää julkaisuluvan saaneet tutkielmat Helsingin yliopiston avoimeen julkaisuarkistoon (Helda).

Kaikki Helsingin yliopiston syventävien opintojen tutkielmat ja sitä vastaavat opinnäytteet jätetään digitaalisessa muodossa E-thesis-järjestelmään ja säilytetään siellä. Kaikissa muissa tiedekunnissa tutkielmat myös tarkastetaan ja arvioidaan E-thesis -järjestelmässä paitsi Matemaattis-luonnontieteellisessä tiedekunnssa. Kasvatustieteellisessä, lääketieteellisessä, teologisessa tiedekunnassa sekä Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolanissa myös kandidaatin tutkielmat arvioidaan E-thesiksessä. Tarkista oman tiedekuntasi käytännöt tutkielman jättöön liittyen, esimerkiksi määräpäivät. Kaikki määräpäivänä (viim. klo 23.59) jätetyt tutkielmat huomioidaan.

Niissä tiedekunnissa, joissa E-thesistä käytetään tutkielmien tarkastamiseen ja arviointiin opintohallinto vastaanottaa opinnäytteet ja siirtää ne annetuille tarkastajille arviointiin. Arvioinnin valmistuttua opiskelija saa siitä tiedon sähköpostitse. Arvioidut syventävien opintojen tutkielmat hyväksytään tiedekuntaneuvostossa/koulutusohjelman johtoryhmässä tai arvostelulautakunnan kokouksessa. Järjestelmään tallennettu työ lähtee automaattisesti alkuperäisyyden tarkastamista varten Ouriginaliin analysoitavaksi. Opiskelija saa tästä viestin. Linkki Ouriginal -raporttiin tulee tutkielman arviointilomakkeelle E-thesikseen ja vain tutkielman tarkastajat pääsevät tarkastelemaan raporttia. Tutkielman arvioinnin yhteydessä Ouriginalin tuottama raportti tarkastetaan.   

Hyväksytyt opinnäytteet säilytetään E-thesis -järjestelmässä. Kaikki hyväksytyt opinnäytteet ovat luettavissa Helsingin yliopiston kirjaston kirjastokioskeilta. Tiivistelmät ovat aina julkisia ja luettavissa avoimessa julkaisuarkistossa.

Hyväksymisen jälkeen opiskelija voi antaa luvan tutkielmansa julkaisemiseen Helsingin ylipiston avoimessa julkaisuarkistossa . Lisää tietoa tutkielman palauttamisesta (mm. tiivistelmälomake), tarkastamisen, arkistoinnin ja julkaisun prosessista löytyy E-thesiksestä .
