Moving from A-level (or equivalent) standard of writing to the expectations required for a degree might seem a little daunting, so to help, UCL student Saumark Bhaumick lists her top tips for writing effective essays.

1. Set the standard

Understanding your academic discipline in relation to your year is the first step to writing a great university essay. A final-year history essay is going to be very different from a biology essay set for a first-year student.

You should identify what the basic requirements of essays in your field are. This includes common essay structure, tone, and referencing.

If you’re not sure on the answers to these, ask your module tutor for essay examples from previous first year students with similar work from relevant sources.

2. Understand structuring

Now that you’ve identified what the expectation is for your first essay, you can begin to think about your structure. To do this, consider what the word limit is. Using essay examples from step 1, allocate a rough percentage for each section in your structure.

For example, you may decide to give 20% of the word count for each main body paragraph, and 10% each to the introduction and conclusion.

3. Plan your essay

At this stage, creating a plan and allocating the appropriate time for each of the stages will really help you. Here’s an example:

Research two points for my main argument (3 days)
Research two points for my counter argument (3 days)
Write the main argument (1 day)
Write up the counter argument (1 day)
Write my introduction and conclusion (1 day)
Referencing and asking someone for feedback (1 day)

4. Research your sources

The research stage will most probably be the most interesting, and the most time-consuming. Here you should focus on learning and building up your notes, so that when it comes to writing, you can simply reword what you’ve already found.

To do this, know which websites to use for sources (journals, papers etc.) such as UCL Explore , Google Scholar , JSTOR . You can also do this by asking your Module Tutor for recommended sites and databases.

Make sure to read through sources efficiently and track what parts are relevant to your essay question by making your own notes from these sources.

5. Write from your sources and reference correctly

Now you can use the most relevant parts of your research notes to write the essay.

Make sure you don’t copy your notes (created from the sources) word for word! You don’t want to plagiarise for a number of reasons, and UCL’s Turnitin System will find out.

Add in the sources for each relevant idea to get references. You can reference properly at the end or as you go – both are fine – but make sure you have a rough way to keep track of which sources you’ve used!

Having identified which style of referencing you should use (e.g. Harvard, Vancouver etc.), you can use websites such as Mybib , Citethisforme or Mendeley to easily create a proper, error-free Bibliography and In-text citations.

6. Get feedback

If you have enough time for this stage, you’ve done well! It would be wise to send your essay draft to your Module Tutor or Personal Tutor and ask for some feedback.

A Reflection on My First Year

I can’t believe how fast these 9 months went by – it feels like only yesterday that I was in the car with my stuff in boxes, driving up to campus to move in. This time, however, the car was taking me back home. My first year finished as quickly as it started, but it’s been a year to remember.

In just a couple of months, I went from being a wide-eyed teenager to a young adult with no restraints. But of course, with great power comes great responsibility. It took time to get used to waking up on time for those 9 AM lectures and staying on top of errands, but that’s part of being an adult. As unsettling as it is to grow up, it becomes slightly easier when everyone around you is also in the same boat.

In semester one , things went quite smoothly. The workload for my degree wasn’t too tough and I was enjoying getting to know my flatmates and meeting other people. It was great to be living in a new city, studying a subject I loved, with all the independence in the world. I settled in swiftly and was looking forward to spending the next few years in Bath.

However, in semester two, the workload became much more intense and so did my university life. It was around this time when lockdown measures were starting to be eased, and that meant a multitude of new opportunities for socialisation . My days consisted of lectures, coursework, and research, whilst my nights involved going into town or socialising. Sleeping in the early morning and waking up at 8 AM soon became a natural part of my routine, which in retrospect, did cause some of my burnout during the summer exam season.

Even though there was never an idle moment, I feel that semester two really did shape my first-year experience, and I wouldn’t have changed anything.

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve grown as a person and learned a lot. I’ve broken out of my comfort zone and expanded my skill set. Some of the key things I learned were to do with the workload, the people, the city of Bath, and the freedom.

University is different from sixth form or college in the sense that preparation and organisation become more important than ever. It’s close to impossible to learn an entire module’s worth of material the night before the exam. There will also be several deadlines in one month that need to be met, which is no walk in the park either.

One of the first things many students learn when coming to university is that time management is key to success. If I had to tell my fresher self a single piece of advice, it would be to have a monthly calendar with the dates of all the deadlines and social events written in. I started doing this in semester two and it made my life so much easier.

Another tip I can’t stress enough is to check your student emails every single day! This will prevent you from missing new assignments and deadlines, which is just unnecessary stress.

The thought of moving to a new city where you don’t know anyone is daunting. It’s easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of worries but we often tend to forget that everyone else is also in the deep end. At the end of the day, we’re all looking to meet new people and make friends.

Some you’ll speak to once during Fresher’s, maybe get their Instagram handle, and never see them again. Others you’ll keep in touch with, see them often, and they’ll become your best friends. Everyone is generally accepting at university, and there’s no need to reinvent yourself or have a makeover. It’s a time to be true to yourself and comfortable in your own skin. If people don’t like you for who you are, it’s their loss!

One of the aspects of student life I’ve enjoyed most life has been meeting people from diverse backgrounds. Some of my closest friends are not only from the UK, but from Spain, India, and Hong Kong as well. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! As long as you are on top of your work, never say no to an opportunity for socialising. Some of my best memories have been last minute-plans where I’ve only had 30 minutes to dress!

Bath has so much to offer, and with a great transport system and short walking distances, there’s no reason not to explore it! The Royal Crescent is a gorgeous picnic spot, and the Roman Baths are pretty impressive – students get free entry, which is a bonus! In the summer, Warleigh Weir is a popular place to hang out and take a dip in the water for those that can brave the cold (bring a towel!)

I ate out at least once a week in semester two – it’s a great way to get some fresh air, a satisfying meal, and a catch-up with friends. Thaikhun serves up authentic and fragrant Thai food, while Framptons does a brilliant offer every Tuesday: burger, fries, and a drink (alcoholic options too!) for a tenner. For quick bites, I’d recommend Tealith for unbeatable bubble tea and Ben’s Cookies for those sweet cravings.

Many of Bath’s hidden gems lie in the narrow alleyways and it’s worth having a explore through them all on a sunny day.

There’s a great variety of clothing stores from Urban Outfitters to JD, though many of them do tend to be out of the range of student budgets. Student discounts do come in handy to save up the coins here and there – Unidays or StudentBeans are essential for keeping costs low not just when shopping, but also in certain restaurants and bars as well. Unfortunately, clubs have remained shut throughout the year for obvious reasons, but at least they’re something to look forward to next year!

The Independence

For some, living away from parents is delightful, and for others, it’s a disaster. As impressionable as we are when starting university, it soon becomes evident that it’s not all fun and games. Chores slowly start to creep up on you, and those missed lectures appear at the back of your mind.

However, life doesn’t revolve around school anymore. Once your work is done for the day, you can spend your downtime playing sports or heading into town; the options are limitless. Even your schedules aren’t as rigid – Bath students get Wednesday afternoons off, and it’s up to you how to spend it.

I’m sad to see my first year go, but there’s a lot more to look forward to in the future! There’ll be periods of homesickness and stress, but there’ll also be good times and lots of laughs. It’s natural for there to be ups and downs, and it makes life worth living. And if anything else, there’ll be lots of amusing messes you can look back on in the coming years.

The first day in college or in a university is always very exciting because of the new environment, new people, and obviously the new educational system. That is why it was a very good and lovely one morning when I was about to leave home for my first day at my university. Excitement was at its peak and adrenaline was flowing through me intensely. I was thrilled as well as slightly nervous regarding the new environment and even a little sad that my previous friends and class fellows were no longer my class fellows now, but that is just life as old people leave so that new ones are being made.

It was my first day at the university, College so I decided to wear one of the most decent and presentable dresses from my wardrobe and I took my bike and left for the university. All the way to my university several things were going through my mind regarding the new university, new friends and teachers, and how I will be able to come up with the adjustments. As soon as I reached the campus my eyes glowed as I saw the enormous and extraordinarily crafted campus of my university. I was still wondering about the campus when I got into a student who was walking, and the wheel of my bike banged into his ankle. He was hurt, I got to him, apologized, and was glad to see that he was not that hurt. After the apology we both introduced ourselves and I was again surprised that he was my class fellow and later became my very close friend.

When we both reached the center of the campus on my first day in University there were our seniors who were ragging the juniors and newcomers, and they were instructed to do very idiotic and very nonsense activities and tasks. We both were very annoyed with it and at the same time were slightly worried as well that this might also happen to us. And for that reason, we started to move away from them and tried to stay as much away from them as possible.

But our escape was not so productive as we both were being caught in the university café and it was time for us to be ragged, and what I got was so embarrassing. I was being prescribed to present a flower to a girl who was in my class fellow and was also a newcomer and even had to say to her that I LOVE You. This was just too much but we were forced to do it and I did that, but thanks to a girl who didn’t take it seriously as she was also aware of what was going on.

We then made our way to the class where there were several other students both male and female. We started conversations so that we could introduce ourselves and that is again what our teacher made us do. Our first lecture was so good and informative and it was the only lecture of our first day, after which we made our way back home. The first day was very much exciting, memorable, and pleasant.

Her name was Lily and she was from the United States. We talked for a while and I found out that she was studying Education at the University of Washington. I told her that I was also studying Education but at a different university. We exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch.

I never imagined that we would become such good friends. Lily has always been there for me, even when I am feeling low. She is one of the most compassionate and caring people I know. Education is important to both of us and we often discuss our passion for it.

The 2nd of march, 2015 year was the day that helped me to overcome one of my greatest fears. This was my first day at one of the most prestigious universities in Uzbekistan and nothing was familiar. I had just entered the doors of INHA University and started my life-changing journey.

I was trying to find the lecture room, but eventually I got lost in the labyrinth of the majestic building. I was embarrassed and many questions were running in my head. Where was my class? Where was the professor’s room? How should I behave with new classmates? However, all this questions were minor in comparison with my main fear. I began to panic.

From my earliest childhood, I was introvert. Therefore, I was afraid of talking to new people because I might look foolish and embarrass myself or just because I thought that, I could do everything by myself. In addition, by reason of nervousness I could start to stammer. Anyway, I had to find someone to help me because I could not be late for the first lesson!

Scraps of foreign speech were traveling from the room at the end of long corridor. Gathering courage, I decided to enter that room and ask for the help. Fortunately, a passing manager asked me if I have problems and kindly offered to accompany me to the classroom.

In a minute, we took a lift and I was on the threshold of the auditorium. To make a step forward was the most difficult action because the noisy classroom was full of new faces. Almost all places were occupied and I sat at the end of the row. In 5 minutes, the calculus professor Lee Yoon Weon came and silence reigned. Subject was not simple, but that was just a starter. I faced some difficulties related to educational process, but my classmates were very kind and were ready to help me at any time. Thereby I made new acquaintances. By the end of the day, I had learnt a lesson.

After the first day at INHA University, I understood that all problems can/could be solved much faster and easier, when you have a supporter. People around us not angry and always willing to help, just forget about your fears and make step forward to them!

Yay! It’s your first day at the university, the beginning of your academic journey that will climax at the beginning of your career journey. It is normal to feel jittery on your first day at the university; however, you can cut yourself some slack by knowing what is required of you on your first day and getting yourself prepared ahead. Make it a fun day instead and ensure the memory is something you will always reminisce about with smiles. Below are some tips on what to expect on your first day at the university.

1. Nervousness is a normal occurrence

There is always a first time for everything. Even a newscaster felt jittery on his or her debut appearance on the screen; likewise, your professor felt jittery on his first day before the students. The only thing that you should try to do is be yourself. Do not put too much pressure on yourself or rush things in order to overcome the nervousness. Remember that the whole of the week is for your adjustment? So, do not clutter everything on your first day to give yourself unnecessary pressure.

2. Go early

When you arrive at the campus early, you can use enough time to move around the campus and through your classes so as to know the distance between buildings and the right routes to take. Coordinate with your housemates and roommates and find out everyone’s time schedules for activities, especially inbound activities.

3. Put yourself in order

Planning yourself well will help you know the right time for each activity. If you will need to wake up early, going to bed early will be ideal. Choose the right clothes and iron them. Pack your bag. Do not be scared to ask questions and know what is in store for you beforehand. Student advisors are always available to assist you. Pre-planning your meals and snacks will go a great length in helping you put yourself together. Have some goals, like reading through the syllabus and other activities you might want to perform. 4. Be open-minded

Be open to meeting new people, making friends, experiencing new environments, and others. Laugh when there is a need for it. Wave to people who seem to like you from afar. Smile at everyone and feel peace within you.

Take a break for your lunch or coffee in open places and have time to meet other people. There are activities you may not have planned for, but they pop up in your day; be open to accepting or rejecting them, depending on your priorities.

5. Pack your backpack with the essentials

It is essential to pack your bag a day ahead. This will give you room to remember anything you may have forgotten while packing it. Items like laptop snacks, notebooks, sharpened pencils, pens, headphones, and earplugs are necessary for your backpack.

Being perfect has different meanings for different individuals. You can choose to create your own definition and follow the path to perfection while setting your own goals. Nevertheless, do not be hard on yourself if you are not able to reach perfection; you will always achieve success if you put your mind to it. The following will help you to become the perfect student you dream of:

1. Be part of the class.

Do not isolate yourself from your classmates; you are now part of them. Introduce yourself to your classmates, professors, and other influential people. You could exchange numbers, if possible. Arriving earlier to class will not be a bad idea in order to network with others before the lectures begin.

2. Join clubs and meetups:

Joining clubs and meetups will help you find interesting skills and improve on your existing ones. You also have the potential for leadership positions and influencing others with your talents.

3. Do extra:

You can volunteer to lead a group or do some assignments for free. This is another avenue to sharpen your leadership skills and acquire more daring ones.

4. Let your whole being be in the class.

Ask questions and make relevant contributions in the class. If you did not understand anything in the class, ensure you gain clarity on that. This is also an avenue for your professor to get to know you. Make yourself available for others to learn from; be a go-to person who has all the solutions.

5. Focus during lectures:

Snap out of any kind of distraction. Pay uninterrupted attention. Switch off your phone or turn off the notifications.

6. Do not skip classes.

Your classes are the major reason you are in school; everything else is secondary to that. Do not form the habit of recording lectures and reading materials to catch up with the class. There could be some things you would have learned and likely questions to ask if you were present in the class. What about assignments and class updates that you may miss out on?

7. Take good notes and study at your own pace.

Figure out the best way you can learn from taking notes. Writing down everything on the slide will be a waste of time and you may not meet up. Write down the relevant points and expand later. Review your notes as often as possible to get acquainted with the materials. This is a better avenue to do away with cramming, as nothing disappoints more than it.

8. Create study time.

Get a good study routine and follow it judiciously. Find out the best time for you to study and make proper use of it. Also, organize yourself in such a way that you allot time to all your activities so that they do not clash.

Bad Study Habits You Should Drop

As a first-timer at the university, it might be difficult for you to figure out the wrong habits that may ruin your studies. With time, you may get to know them and drop them. But you should not wait to make a mistake before figuring out the solution. Here, we have compiled them to help you overcome them now.

1. Procrastination:

If you keep procrastinating, you might find out that the only time left to study is during the exam period. This will become so stressful for you and you may not still be able to carry all your courses along. This is why having study time is very good. Make sure you follow it faithfully. One more thing: do not let your friends, television, or social media be a distraction point for you. It will make you keep procrastinating while giving attention to the wrong activities. To deal with them, allocate time for all your activities. Know when to have time for your friends, when to watch the television and when to log in to Facebook or Twitter.

2. Studying with the wrong people:

When you choose to study with unscrupulous people or those who are not relevant to your field, it might be difficult for you to enjoy your studies. Get the right study partners who will motivate and support you through the study period. Get to ask one another questions after you have learned on your own. If your study partners make you spend the better part of your time chatting and discussing irrelevant matters, change them.

3. Studying at the wrong place:

Your couch and your bed are the number one wrong places. Avoid them. Test different atmospheres and choose the one that will help you study better. You need not be told that noisy places or places with a lot of activities and fun should be avoided for full concentration.

Do all university semesters start the same way and have the same events? Are the same terms used around the world for the first week of university? Although each country will share similarities when it comes to the beginning of university, they will have their own unique way of introducing new students to the institution.

In the UK, the first couple of weeks of university are referred to as “freshers week” or “welcome week”. This is because the first-year students are fresh to the university. It’s a great time to make new friends, get started on your classes, join clubs and societies and find your way around your campus and local area.

Most universities start freshers week around the end of September when the students arrive for the new academic year. Some universities may have two weeks of “freshers” and so may start a little earlier in the middle of September.

Throughout the week (or two) your university will offer activities, meet and greets, and other events to allow students to socialise and get to know their university. This is also the time when students can sign up to the local health centre, register for their library card and apply for their student cards.

Halls of residence will host events to help you settle into your living space and meet other students living in the building.

The local off-campus restaurants, pubs and nightclubs often offer discounts, deals and themed nights to help students settle into the area.

United States

Universities in the US often refer to the first week of the academic year as “orientation week”. This is because students will be learning the campus layout, will take introductory classes and begin to experience life as a university student.

Many first-year students choose to live in residential halls on or near campus , so the university assigns a few days to settle in and for students to meet each other. Then orientation begins. The dates of orientation depend on your chosen university with some taking place as early as June.

During orientation week in the US, not only can students begin to familiarise themselves with their university, but they can also sign up for introductory classes. You can speak to lecturers and plan what you would like to study during your first year. Some classes fill up fast so it’s always best to try and choose your classes as soon as you can.

There will also be a range of meet-ups and events organised so students can learn more about student life and learn more about American student societies such as fraternities and sororities .

And while you enjoy what university has to offer, your parents, families and supporters have the option of attending some programmes too.

Orientation week or “frosh” is how universities in Canada describe the first week of the academic year. The aim is to welcome all students and help them prepare for their first year at university. Just like the UK, some universities range on start dates for frosh.

The unusual thing about frosh is that it is often split by faculty and can sometimes encourage some friendly rivalry to see which department organises the best first week for new students. Throughout the week students have the chance to attend parties, pub crawls and sporting events, as well as mental-health support workshops, introductory lectures and ice-breaking games.

Students have the choice to opt out of their faculty frosh if they don’t want to attend. But it’s a good idea to still make it to the university-wide orientation events.

One aspect of frosh that students often love is that it is organised by older students who can answer questions from their experience of being at the university. Not only can they help students explore the local area, they can also help students set up bank accounts, register for the campus health centre and provide support with settling in.

Australian universities refer to week one of the year as “O’Week”, meaning orientation week. Just like other countries around the world, this is the time for students to learn about their university.

The universities often kick off the events with “welcome Saturday” when all students can arrive on campus and move into their accommodation. The difference between O’Week in Australia compared to other countries’ orientation is that often students will also be shown local beaches, the nearby city or even famous landmarks.

One event is a race around the city where you may have to find certain landmarks or collect clues in teams. This is not only great for getting to know your local area but it’s a fun way to make friends.

Throughout O’week, the organisers will put you into small groups as you complete team challenges, attend workshops, try a new place for dinner or dress up for a fancy-dress party. And if you begin to feel homesick, there are many older students and well-being coordinators who will be there to help you feel comfortable.

Older students will join in throughout the week if you have any questions.

Helpful tips for the first few weeks of university

Wherever you choose to attend university, here are some tips to make sure you enjoy the first few weeks:

Get involved with clubs and events that interest you
Join a sporting event or team day to see if you want to become a permanent member
Don’t just pick what your friends are doing, choose for yourself
Budget a little extra spending money for the first few weeks for events and parties
Don’t push yourself too hard, remember to stay hydrated, sleep and eat well
Make use of the daytime to look around and familiarise yourself with the university layout
Bring sharing snacks on moving-in day to connect with your flatmates
Remember everyone is having the same experience so it’s ok to be nervous
Be yourself!
Don’t feel pressured to drink alcohol
Attend the student union fair to see what they have to offer
Bring some fancy-dress items – you never know what events will happen
Accept the free gifts – you can never have too many pens
Take part in the buddy programme if your university offers one, you can learn a lot from an older student who has experienced exactly what you are going through

Advice on planning and writing essays and dissertations

University essays differ from school essays in that they are less concerned with what you know and more concerned with how you construct an argument to answer the question. This means that the starting point for writing a strong essay is to first unpick the question and to then use this to plan your essay before you start putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard).

A really good starting point for you are these short, downloadable Tips for Successful Essay Writing and Answering the Question resources. Both resources will help you to plan your essay, as well as giving you guidance on how to distinguish between different sorts of essay questions.

You may find it helpful to watch this seven-minute video on six tips for essay writing which outlines how to interpret essay questions, as well as giving advice on planning and structuring your writing:

Different disciplines will have different expectations for essay structure and you should always refer to your Faculty or Department student handbook or course Canvas site for more specific guidance.

However, broadly speaking, all essays share the following features:

Essays need an introduction to establish and focus the parameters of the discussion that will follow. You may find it helpful to divide the introduction into areas to demonstrate your breadth and engagement with the essay question. You might define specific terms in the introduction to show your engagement with the essay question; for example, ‘This is a large topic which has been variously discussed by many scientists and commentators. The principle tension is between the views of X and Y who define the main issues as…’ Breadth might be demonstrated by showing the range of viewpoints from which the essay question could be considered; for example, ‘A variety of factors including economic, social and political, influence A and B. This essay will focus on the social and economic aspects, with particular emphasis on…..’

The main body of the essay should elaborate on the issues raised in the introduction and develop an argument(s) that answers the question. It should consist of a number of self-contained paragraphs each of which makes a specific point and provides some form of evidence to support the argument being made. Remember that a clear argument requires that each paragraph explicitly relates back to the essay question or the developing argument.

Conclusion: An essay should end with a conclusion that reiterates the argument in light of the evidence you have provided; you shouldn’t use the conclusion to introduce new information.
References: You need to include references to the materials you’ve used to write your essay. These might be in the form of footnotes, in-text citations, or a bibliography at the end. Different systems exist for citing references and different disciplines will use various approaches to citation. Ask your tutor which method(s) you should be using for your essay and also consult your Department or Faculty webpages for specific guidance in your discipline.

If you are writing an essay for a science subject you may need to consider additional areas, such as how to present data or diagrams. Extended essays and dissertations

Longer pieces of writing like extended essays and dissertations may seem like quite a challenge from your regular essay writing. The important point is to start with a plan and to focus on what the question is asking. Planning your time effectively

Try not to leave the writing until close to your deadline, instead start as soon as you have some ideas to put down onto paper. Your early drafts may never end up in the final work, but the work of committing your ideas to paper helps to formulate not only your ideas, but the method of structuring your writing to read well and conclude firmly.

Although many students and tutors will say that the introduction is often written last, it is a good idea to begin to think about what will go into it early on. For example, the first draft of your introduction should set out your argument, the information you have, and your methods, and it should give a structure to the chapters and sections you will write. Your introduction will probably change as time goes on but it will stand as a guide to your entire extended essay or dissertation and it will help you to keep focused.

The structure of extended essays or dissertations will vary depending on the question and discipline, but may include some or all of the following:

The background information to - and context for - your research. This often takes the form of a literature review.
Explanation of the focus of your work.
Explanation of the value of this work to scholarship on the topic.
List of the aims and objectives of the work and also the issues which will not be covered because they are outside its scope.

The main body of your extended essay or dissertation will probably include your methodology, the results of research, and your argument(s) based on your findings.

The conclusion is to summarise the value your research has added to the topic, and any further lines of research you would undertake given more time or resources.

Tips on writing longer pieces of work

Approaching each chapter of a dissertation as a shorter essay can make the task of writing a dissertation seem less overwhelming. Each chapter will have an introduction, a main body where the argument is developed and substantiated with evidence, and a conclusion to tie things together. Unlike in a regular essay, chapter conclusions may also introduce the chapter that will follow, indicating how the chapters are connected to one another and how the argument will develop through your dissertation.

Women's Golf Concludes Day One of SEC Championship

The University of Missouri women's golf opens the first round of the SEC Championship on Friday, carding a 304.

Sophomore duo Addie Dobson and Melanie Walker led the Tigers through the opening round. Dobson ends the day with a 74 in 39th. Walker sits one stroke behind with 75 after starting the day with a clean front-nine scorecard with eight pars and only one bogey.

The duo was followed by Fleur van Beek at 76.

The Tigers sit at 14th on the leaderboard with a 304 with No. 2 South Carolina leading the field.

Day two is set to begin at 8:40 a.m. CT for Mizzou.

Lady Vols Conclude Day One of SEC Championship

BELLEAIR, Fla. – Tennessee women's golf finished the first of three rounds at the SEC Championship at the Pelican Golf Club on Friday.

Led by senior Kayla Holden , the Lady Vols shot 20-over (300) and sit in 13th place headed into Saturday's second round. Holden used three birdies to shoot 1-over (73) and finish the day in 35th place.

Sophomore Manassanan Chotikabhukkana had one of the day's three eagles, converting the par-5 14th hole in three shots. The Thailand native is tied for 39th place at 2-over (74).

Tennessee recorded the second-best team score on par 5s, shooting 4-under on such holes.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team wrapped up the first day of action at the Thunderbird Collegiate on Friday in a tie for seventh place at Papago Golf Course. The Cowboys finished at 1-under 567 and tied with Utah and Texas Tech at the par-71, 7,551-yard layout. OSU was one of just nine teams in the 17-team field to complete their second round.
