The Importance Of Punctuality

Rohan is a talented artist but has one major problem: he’s never on time for meetings and appointments.

“I’m aware of this problem and always try to be punctual. However, somehow, something or the other goes wrong and I get late,” he says.

“Quite often, I miss out on opportunities and projects just because I can’t meet timelines.”

What Is Punctuality?

From Rohan’s admission, you would have understood that time management is a key skill for success at work—and life in general. Punctuality is a sign of professionalism and shapes your personal branding at work.

Like Rohan, you, too, may miss out on big opportunities if you aren’t punctual. We often lag in life because we don’t understand the real importance of punctuality.

All of us have a fixed number of working hours in a day, but our workloads vary. It is crucial to master the art of time management by being punctual.

Whether you are a student, an artist, a sportsperson, or an entrepreneur, you are unlikely to achieve success until you consistently improve your output each day.

Contrary to popular perception, a lack of punctuality doesn’t just affect an individual; it can also impact others.

Imagine the implications of a train driver or an airline pilot reporting late for work!

Importance Of Punctuality

Have you ever thought about the importance of punctuality?

To understand the value of punctuality, let’s look at five key facts that show you why you should inculcate the habit of being on time.

Punctuality shows you’re organized.

Do you think you would ever consider a person organized and systematic if they are usually the last to enter a meeting room, often minutes before the meeting ends?

A person who can’t meet deadlines is automatically considered unorganized. Punctuality, on the other hand, shows you’re organized and more productive. Employers want optimal productivity from their teams.

Being late, not being able to find relevant documents, or missing out on important tasks due to poor time management can hurt individual growth.

A punctual person is reliable

The general perception is that people who understand the importance of punctuality are serious about their responsibilities. People consider them dependable.

Colleagues and bosses include people with good time management skills in important projects because they are regarded as reliable. On the other hand, there may not be much work of value coming your way if you are seen as someone who doesn’t deliver on time.

Punctual employees enhance a company’s reputation

If you can meet deadlines for client projects and services, not only are you seen as a performer, you also enhance your company’s reputation.

Clients look for reliability and want to do more business with companies that meet their expectations on time. People who fly into meetings late without preparation damage an organization’s reputation as much as their own.

Punctuality is a key aspect of professionalism

People who understand the value of punctuality and are always on time for daily team meetings, crucial board meetings, and client meetings are considered professional.

Punctuality usually highlights focus and commitment. Being on time for meetings shows you understand the task and what needs to be done.

Punctuality shows you respect your co-workers

How would you feel if you had a busy day ahead and had to stay late for a meeting because a colleague arrived late? Not so happy, right?

Punctuality shows you respect your co-workers and are a team player. Teamwork depends on collaboration and every team member pulling their weight. Departments depend on each other for operational efficiency. For instance, marketing depends on the work of the creative team, and the sales team relies on the marketing material shared by the marketing team. Any delay by one can drag down the entire team.

There is no better time to understand the value of punctuality and inculcate it as a daily habit. However it isn’t easy to change habits formed over a long period without expert guidance. Harappa Education’s Practicing Excellence course has time management techniques you can adopt to boost your productivity. These include the Eisenhower Matrix , which is a tool that will help you prioritize tasks depending on their urgency and importance, and the Pomodoro Technique , which will help you avoid procrastination and focus o n the task at hand.  You can enroll for this course online and boost your productivity.

Punctuality: A Key to Success

Punctuality is a very important aspect of life that everyone should strive for. It is a virtue that will help you in your career and personal life. If you are not punctual, then it will be difficult to achieve your desired goals.

The Benefits of Being Punctual

Punctual people always have a plan to follow and are always on time for everything they do. This makes them more disciplined and they tend to be successful in their life.

Time Management and Success

They know what they want to do and how long it will take them to accomplish their goals. This is a very important part of their success because it shows that they are serious about what they do and that they have a long-term vision for themselves.

Punctuality for Students

Students who are punctual always get good marks because they manage their work and studies on time. They also learn how to organize their time and segregate their daily routine to do their work and study at the right times.

Punctuality in Professional Life

Being on time for a meeting or an interview shows that you are organized and professional. It will help you stand out from the rest and give you a leg up in the job market.

Responsibility and Trustworthiness

It will also make you appear more responsible and trustworthy. This is because being on time is a way of showing that you are dependable and that you will always be there to help someone out.

Cultural Expectations and Punctuality

In many cultures, it is expected that people are always on time. This is because being late is considered rude and disrespectful. In some cultures, it is even offensive because it shows that you do not care about the people around you.

The Importance of Punctuality for Students and Business Leaders

If you are a student, being punctual is very important because it helps you in managing your work and studies and helps you to have a better life. It also saves you a lot of time that you could have used for other things.

Business leaders should always promote punctuality because it is a very important part of their job. They should make it a habit for their employees to be on time, so that their businesses can operate smoothly and without interruptions.

They should also reward those who are punctual with extra time off or potential bonuses. This will help them to be more consistent with their work and this will have a positive impact on the overall morale of their team members.

The Consequences of Being Late

Being late often creates more problems than it solves. It can disrupt the flow of work and it can cause a negative impact on customers. They may not trust the person who is late to deliver their order on time.

It can also be embarrassing to be caught out of the office early or late for a meeting. This can affect your credibility and you might lose some important clients if they feel that you are not reliable or have low integrity.

Punctuality: An Ethical Value

It is also important to remember that being punctual is not a cultural norm. It is an ethical value that you should uphold no matter where you live or what other people expect of you.

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On Punctuality For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on punctuality for kids, a paragraph on punctuality for kids, short essay on punctuality in english for children, long essay on punctuality for children, what will your child learn from an essay on punctuality.

Right from a young age, children are taught the importance of punctuality. Following a daily schedule, arriving at school on time, completing homework and assignments within the stipulated time and keeping up with the scheduled activities and appointments are all part of being punctual. When children are taught the value of being punctual from an early age, they can lead a more disciplined life. Teachers try to impart this value to children in lower primary classes. To encourage students to think about the importance of being timely, they ask children to write an essay on the topic of punctuality.

Children can think of ways in which they are expected to be punctual while writing this essay. They will also have to put their thoughts and ideas into words and compose an articulate write-up in English. This might come as a challenge for little children initially. Let us help your child write a wonderful essay on punctuality with some key points to remember and sample essays.

Young kids can be confused when writing an essay for the first time. They may forget to structure it well to make it meaningful or write irrelevant information making the composition drift from the given topic. To help kids write a good piece on punctuality, they should take note of these key points that may come in handy:

Here are key points to remember for lower primary students when writing an essay on punctuality:

  • Explain what punctuality is.
  • Write the benefits of being punctual.
  • Explain how punctuality benefits them – in their studies and personal life.
  • Structure the essay well with a good introduction, a body with an explanation about punctuality in various aspects of life, and a conclusion listing the benefit of timeliness.

Writing an essay for class 1 and 2 students can be difficult at first. One easy way to transition them into essay writing is by starting with a few sentences on the given topic. Once the kid can write simple sentences on a particular subject, they need to compose those sentences into a paragraph to make an essay.

Here are ten lines on punctuality for kids to refer:

  • Punctuality is a good virtue that helps people complete a task within due time.
  • It can also refer to reaching on time at work, meetings, school, or anywhere else.
  • A punctual person is considered credible and trustworthy.
  • Punctuality makes us value our time and that of others.
  • A punctual person is very good at time management.
  • Most famous and successful personalities are known to be punctual.
  • As a student, punctuality helps us complete our homework on time, do well in our studies and create a good impression on our teachers.
  • When we complete our work on time, we have plenty of spare time to pursue our hobbies and other entertainment.
  • Being punctual right from the beginning makes us disciplined and helps us carry on the habit even when we grow up.
  • A punctual person is well-respected in their workplace and social circle.

After writing simple lines about punctuality, it is time to connect these ideas together and write in a continuous flow to form a small paragraph. Here is an example of how to write a paragraph on punctuality for kids:

Punctuality is an important virtue for everybody. It is a quality for which we are recognised and sometimes highly appreciated. To be punctual, we must develop the practice of completing our tasks on time regularly. Punctuality comes down to effective time management to achieve deadlines. Deadlines govern student life, and missing our deadline can adversely affect our studies and performance in exams. Two things that are necessary for punctuality are setting up a routine and maintaining discipline. Students who follow a good schedule and are exceptionally disciplined from a young age excel in their studies. They have a high chance of succeeding in life when they grow.

FOr students of higher classes, an essay can be written in a few paragraphs with a well-defined introduction and conclusion. Here is a short punctuality essay for classes 1, 2 and 3:

Punctuality is a person’s habit of completing their tasks on time, and it is one of the most significant secrets to anyone’s success. The most notable characteristic of leaders who head the country and handle great responsibilities is punctuality. It is an etiquette that encourages people to follow a strict schedule and makes them mindful of the value of time. A timely individual understands how to manage and respect their time and that of others.

Punctual people are well respected as they live more disciplined lives. A punctual person tries to avoid distractions while working on a particular assignment. When they finish their work in hand, they can enjoy free time without worrying about pending work. Employees in the defence forces get rigorous training to become disciplined and punctual in their job, regardless of whether it is pouring, sunny, storming, or any other natural calamity. Punctuality is a key factor in achieving success at any level. As students, it is important for us to reach school on time, never be late for attending any classes, complete our homework on time and maintain a good study schedule to be ahead in academics. This will help us achieve success inside and outside our school lives. Teachers appreciate punctual students. Punctuality makes us good students as well as responsible citizens.

The length of essays increases as children grow. An essay for class 3 students has to be longer with lots of ideas written in good language. Class 3 students are more apt to express their views, therefore can write long articles. Here is a long essay on punctuality for children:

Time is a crucial aspect of existence, and it is critical to comprehend its significance in achieving success in life. Nobody is born with time management skills. However, these skills can be developed in life. It is a vital skill that everyone should acquire to be successful. The term “success” refers to achieving life’s objectives that we have set for ourselves. We can only offer the greatest output if we work systematically, consistently, and on time. Therefore, punctuality is a trait associated with almost all successful people.

Punctuality and discipline are two of the most vital attributes of a successful individual. A person with this virtue completes their tasks on time or within a certain deadline. It aids people in their quest for a brighter future. We can learn about the actuality of their successes by looking back in time. A person who does all of their daily duties on time and on schedule leads a happy life. They have time for everything in their lives, from their families to friends and hobbies to parties. Punctuality helps them save time to lead a happy, successful, and peaceful life.

An organised structure of work is necessary to manage time efficiently. When we postpone one activity, it sets off a chain of events that causes delays in other chores. This procedure will continue unless we break the chain. Punctuality instils and reinforces trustworthiness. A punctual person is praised and welcomed everywhere they go, lessening anxiety and concern by providing a positive example. Others have a favourable impression of punctual people and find them trustworthy. Prominent leaders have earned a reputation for excellence through their punctuality. Being on time shows discipline and respect for our work and responsibilities.

Punctuality is a habit that must be inculcated in children right from an early age so that it reflects in our lifestyle even after we grow up. Therefore, we must make sure that we are on time for all our tasks and assignments. It is one of the essential things that aids our holistic development. Being punctual in our academics ensures our success as students. Learning to be punctual at an early age helps us become responsible students and, later, accountable adults. Punctuality gives us the confidence to excel in our studies, sports and other activities. This virtue helps everyone attain maximum success in life, gain respect everywhere and lead a fulfilling life.

Why Is Punctuality Important?

Some key benefits of punctuality are time management, better efficiency, completing tasks on time, achieving targets, and saving time to pursue other activities.

Importance of Punctuality In A Student’s Life

Punctuality in school life is of great importance. It makes students do their work on time, helps them study efficiently, and makes them do well academically and become disciplined.

How Can One Become Punctual?

One can become punctual when one strives to get discipline in life. However, no one can become punctual overnight. It’s a habit that one has to inculcate. You can start by completing your work on schedule. Remember to keep track of time, be on time, and do your assignments on schedule. To be punctual, you can make a daily schedule and adhere to it.

Your child will learn the value of punctuality through this essay writing assignment. Being punctual will make them excel in school life and improve their studies. Also, punctuality will give them enough time to play and do extra activities.

Punctuality is a great virtue that we all want to learn in our lives, and it helps us be disciplined and perform our work on schedule to excel in everything we do.

Value Of Punctuality

Essays Essays , proverbs , punctual , Punctuality 0

Last Updated on October 22, 2023

  • Punctuality is one of the important characteristic we should maintain in our life
  • Punctuality helps us to complete our work on time
  • If we are not punctual, we might miss many important things in life
  • We should be punctual to school daily
  • People appreciate us if we are punctual in everything

Value of Punctuality : (Short Essay)

Timeliness is an important aspect in everyone’s life. We cannot complete any task with great results if we are not punctual in starting it. We should have the habit of being punctual even in small things. Punctuality helps us to save a lot of time. If we are lazy and start a task in the last minute, it leads to great loss. It is always true that “Haste makes Waste”. At the same time, if we are punctual we can complete our task well ahead of the given deadline. Punctuality leads to fame and excellence. We should therefore do right things at the right time and be a punctual person in our life.

Value of Punctuality : (Brief Essay)

Time is the most precious asset to anyone in this world. Time once gone is gone forever; we cannot retake the lost time. So, we should never be late in anything in our life. Punctuality is a virtue that leads to great achievements in life.

A punctual person will be respected by everyone. One who is punctual is reliable and people believe punctual people because they do not miss to perform a task. So, in any place, be it school, college or workplace, punctuality matters a lot. Punctuality gives way to success without doubt.

Many people miss great things and stand in the same place without any improvement just because they are late. A very simple example is going to a railway station late. We cannot expect a train wait for us even if we are 2 minutes late. So, we should keep in mind that “Time and Tide waits No Man”. Only if we are punctual, we can be in track of any common task. Punctuality not only saves our time, it also saves others’ time. If we are not punctual, no one will wait for us to reach the place or complete a task lately.

It is very easy and simple to maintain a punctual life. When we wake up in the morning daily, we have to keep a list of important things that day. We should keep a reminder of when we need to complete these tasks. If we prioritize our tasks, over a period of time we can learn how to complete tasks assigned to us on time. By being punctual, we set a good example to others who are not punctual. If we are punctual, we can definitely see success knocking our doorsteps one day.

5 facts about religion and americans’ views of donald trump.

Faith leaders pray over then-President Donald Trump during an "Evangelicals for Trump" campaign event held at the King Jesus International Ministry on Jan. 3, 2020, in Miami. (Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

For most of the last decade, observers have been trying to understand why so many highly religious Americans have a favorable view of Donald Trump, asking how values voters can support a candidate who has been divorced twice, married three times and found liable for sexual abuse . Is Trump viewed most positively by those who might be described as “Christians in name only” – people who identify as Christians but aren’t actually religious?

The latest Pew Research Center survey sheds light on these and related questions. Here are five facts about religion and views of Trump, based on our survey of 12,693 U.S. adults conducted Feb. 13-25.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore the connection between religion and views of Donald Trump.

For this analysis, we surveyed 12,693 respondents from Feb. 13 to 25, 2024. Most of the respondents (10,642) are members of the Center’s American Trends Panel, an online survey panel recruited through national random sampling of residential addresses, which gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.

The remaining respondents (2,051) are members of three other panels, the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, the NORC AmeriSpeak panel and the SSRS opinion panel. All three are national survey panels recruited through random sampling (not “opt-in” polls). We used these additional panels to ensure that the survey would have enough Jewish and Muslim respondents to be able to report on their views.

The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, religious affiliation and other categories.

For more, refer to the ATP’s methodology and the methodology for this survey .

Among religious groups, White evangelical Protestants continue to have the most positive opinion of Trump. Overall, two-thirds of White evangelical Protestants say they have a favorable view of the former president, including 30% who have a very favorable opinion of him.

A diverging bar chart showing that two-thirds of White evangelicals see Trump favorably.

Roughly half of White Catholics (51%) express positive views of Trump, as do 47% of White nonevangelical Protestants and 45% of Hispanic Protestants.

But in every other U.S. religious group large enough to be analyzed in this survey, large majorities have unfavorable opinions of Trump, including:

  • 88% of atheists
  • 82% of agnostics
  • 80% of Black Protestants
  • 79% of Jewish Americans

These religious patterns largely reflect partisan differences . Most White evangelicals tend to vote for Republicans, as do smaller majorities of White Catholics and White nonevangelical Protestants. By contrast, most atheists, agnostics, Black Protestants and Jews tend to vote for Democrats.

Trump’s favorability rating is similar among Christians who attend church regularly and those who don’t. Some observers have pointed out that Trump’s political base consists largely of people who call themselves Christians but don’t go to church. However, our survey shows that Christians who regularly go to church express equally favorable views of Trump as those who don’t often attend religious services.

A diverging bar chart showing that Christians who attend church regularly and those who don't have similar views of Trump.

Among Christians as a whole, 47% of those who attend church at least monthly say they have a favorable view of the former president. That’s on par with the 46% of non-church-attending Christians who say the same.

Among White evangelical Protestants, 68% of regular churchgoers have a positive view of Trump – similar to the 64% among White evangelicals who don’t attend church regularly.

The only exception to this pattern is among White Protestants who do not identify as born-again or evangelical. In this group, Trump is viewed more favorably by those who don’t attend church regularly than by those who do (52% vs. 32%).

Many of the people who view Trump favorably don’t go to religious services regularly – but very few are nonreligious. Overall, 64% of respondents who have a favorable view of Trump say they attend religious services a few times a year or less often, while 35% say they go to services at least once or twice a month. (Among all respondents, 69% say they attend religious services a few times a year or less, while 30% go at least monthly.)

Table comparing those who have a favorable view of Donald Trump by level of religious commitment. 23% of U.S. adults with a favorable view of Trump are highly religious, including 11% who are highly religious White evangelical Protestants.

Religious attendance is just one way of looking at religious commitment. Another common way we measure it is to combine survey questions about attendance at religious services, how often people pray and how important religion is to them.

U.S. adults who attend religious services at least weekly, pray daily and say religion is very important in their lives are categorized as highly religious. Those who seldom or never attend services, seldom or never pray and say religion is not too important or not at all important in their lives are counted as having low religious commitment. Everyone else is counted as having medium religious commitment.

Looked at this way, 23% of U.S. adults with a favorable view of Trump are highly religious, including 11% who are highly religious White evangelical Protestants.

Another 62% of Americans with a favorable view of Trump have medium levels of religious commitment, including 13% who are White evangelicals.

Just 15% of people with a favorable view of Trump have low levels of religious commitment. By far the biggest subgroup within this category is religious “nones” – people who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.” Overall, 18% of people with a positive view of Trump are religious “nones,” including 10% who are “nones” with low levels of religiousness.

Very few of the people who have a positive view of Trump are White evangelical Protestants with a low level of religiousness. Indeed, self-described White evangelical Protestants who are not religiously observant account for less than 1% of the overall U.S. population. Even if a candidate wanted to form a coalition rooted in support from nonreligious evangelicals, there just aren’t enough of them to be a national political base.

Most people who view Trump positively don’t think he is especially religious himself. But many think he stands up for people with religious beliefs like theirs. Just 8% of people who have a positive view of Trump think he is very religious, while 51% think he is somewhat religious and 38% say he is not too or not at all religious .

But 51% of those with a favorable view of Trump think he stands up for people with religious beliefs like their own, including 24% who think he does this a great deal and 27% who say he does this quite a bit.

Among White evangelical Protestants with a favorable view of Trump, just 9% view him as very religious. But roughly two-thirds think he does a great deal (32%) or quite a bit (35%) to stand up for people with religious beliefs like theirs.

Table showing that among Americans who like Donald Trump, just 8% say he is very religious himself – but 51% say he does a great deal or quite a bit to stand up for people with religious beliefs like theirs

Religious “nones” who are culturally Christian view Trump a bit more positively than religious “nones” who aren’t.

A diverging bar chart showing that, among religious 'nones, cultural Christians are modestly more favorable toward Trump.

One way to measure for differences between “cultural” and “practicing” Christians is to compare Christians who do and don’t do go to church regularly, as we did above. Another is to look at religiously unaffiliated respondents, or “nones” – people who describe themselves, religiously, as atheist, agnostic, or “nothing in particular.” In our new survey, we asked these Americans whether they think of themselves as Christians “aside from religion … for example ethnically, culturally or because of your family’s background.”

Religious “nones” who identify as culturally Christian have a modestly more favorable opinion of Trump than “nones” who do not identify as Christian in any way. Still, large majorities in both groups express negative views of the former president.

This Prophetic Academic Now Foresees the West’s Defeat

A photograph of Emmanuel Todd

By Christopher Caldwell

Mr. Caldwell is a contributing Opinion writer and the author of “The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties.”

“If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you, he will not,” President Biden said during his State of the Union address on Thursday night. Europe is “at risk,” he added, as he welcomed Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister of Sweden, the newest member of NATO.

But Mr. Biden also said he remains “determined” that American soldiers will not be necessary to defend Europe. As a White House spokesman put it last week, it is “crystal clear” that the use of ground troops is off the table.

Mr. Kristersson’s head must have been spinning. The prospect of further Russian incursions was the strongest argument that the United States relied on to draw NATO into the war, and to draw new members, like Sweden, into NATO. But if such incursions were a genuine concern, then ground troops would be an option for the United States and its allies almost by definition.

The rationale for NATO participation in the Russo-Ukrainian war is getting fuzzier at the very moment when one would expect it to be getting clearer.

This is a problem. Europeans, like Americans, are tiring of the war. They are increasingly skeptical that Ukraine can win it. But perhaps most important, they distrust the United States, which has done little in this war to dispel skepticism about its motives and its competence that arose during the Iraq war two decades ago. Unique though Americans sometimes believe their polarization to be, all Western societies have a version of it. As Europe’s “elites” see it, NATO is fighting a war to beat back a Russian invasion. But as “populists” see it, American elites are leading a war to beat back a challenge to their own hegemony — no matter what the collateral damage.

American leadership is failing: That is the argument of an eccentric new book that since January has stood near the top of France’s best-seller lists. It is called “La Défaite de l’Occident” (“The Defeat of the West”). Its author, Emmanuel Todd, is a celebrated historian and anthropologist who in 1976, in a book called “The Final Fall,” used infant-mortality statistics to predict that the Soviet Union was headed for collapse.

Since then, what Mr. Todd writes about current events has tended to be received in Europe as prophecy. His book “After the Empire,” predicting the “breakdown of the American order,” came out in 2002, in the flush of post-9/11 national cohesion and before the debacle of the Iraq war, to which Mr. Todd was fiercely opposed. Anglophone (his doctorate is from Cambridge) and Anglophile (at least at the start of his career), he has grown steadily disillusioned with the United States, even anti-American.

Mr. Todd is a critic of American involvement in Ukraine, but his argument is not the now-familiar historical one made by the dissident political scientist John Mearsheimer. Like Mr. Mearsheimer, Mr. Todd questions the zealous expansion of NATO under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the neoconservative ideology of democracy promotion and the official demonization of Russia. But his skepticism of U.S. involvement in Ukraine goes deeper. He believes American imperialism has not only endangered the rest of the world but also corroded American character.

In interviews over the past year, Mr. Todd has argued that Westerners focus too much on one surprise of the war: Ukraine’s ability to defy Russia’s far larger army. But there is a second surprise that has been underappreciated: Russia’s ability to defy the sanctions and seizures through which the United States sought to destroy the Russian economy. Even with its Western European allies in tow, the United States lacked the leverage to keep the world’s big, new economic actors in line. India took advantage of fire-sale prices for Russian energy. China provided Russia with sanctioned goods and electronic components.

And then the manufacturing base of the United States and its European allies proved inadequate to supply Ukraine with the matériel (particularly artillery) needed to stabilize, let alone win, the war. The United States no longer has the means to deliver on its foreign-policy promises.

People have been awaiting this moment for quite some time, not all of them as far from the corridors of power as Mr. Todd. Mr. Biden mentioned in his 2017 memoir that President Barack Obama used to warn him about “overpromising to the Ukrainian government.” Now we see why.

Mr. Todd contends that Americans’ heedless plunge into the global economy was a mistake. Parts of his case will be familiar from other authors: The United States produces fewer cars than it did in the 1980s; it produces less wheat. But parts of his case involve deeper, long-term cultural shifts perennially associated with prosperity. We used to call them decadence.

In an advanced, highly educated society like ours, Mr. Todd argues, too many people aspire to the work of running things and bossing people around. They want to be politicians, artists, managers. This doesn’t always require learning intellectually complex stuff . “In the long run, educational progress has brought educational decline,” he writes, “because it has led to the disappearance of those values that favor education.”

Mr. Todd calculates that the United States produces fewer engineers than Russia does, not just per capita but in absolute numbers. It is experiencing an “internal brain drain,” as its young people drift from demanding, high-skill, high-value-added occupations to law, finance and various occupations that merely transfer value around the economy and in some cases may even destroy it. (He asks us to consider the ravages of the opioid industry, for instance.)

As Mr. Todd sees it, the West’s decision to outsource its industrial base is more than bad policy; it is also evidence of a project to exploit the rest of the world. But ringing up profits is not the only thing America does in the world — it also spreads a system of liberal values, which are often described as universal human rights. A specialist in the anthropology of families, Mr. Todd warns that a lot of the values Americans are currently spreading are less universal than Americans think.

Anglo-American family structures, for example, have traditionally been less patriarchal than those almost anyplace else in the world. As it has modernized, the United States has come to espouse a model of sex and gender that conjugates poorly with those of traditional cultures (such as India’s) and more patriarchal modern ones (such as Russia’s).

Mr. Todd is not a moralizer. But he insists that traditional cultures have a lot to fear from the West’s various progressive leanings and may resist allying themselves on foreign policy with those who espouse them. In a similar way, during the Cold War, the Soviet Union’s official atheism was a deal-breaker for many people who might otherwise have been well disposed toward Communism.

Mr. Todd does believe that certain of our values are “deeply negative.” He presents evidence that the West does not value the lives of its young. Infant mortality, the telltale metric that led him to predict the Soviet collapse half a century ago, is higher in Mr. Biden’s America (5.4 per thousand) than in Mr. Putin’s Russia — and three times higher than in the Japan of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

While Mr. Todd is, again, not judgmental on sexual matters, he is judgmental on intellectual ones. The inability to distinguish facts from wishes astounds him at every turn of the Ukraine war. The American hope early in the war that China might cooperate in a sanctions regime against Russia, thereby helping the United States refine a weapon that would one day be aimed at China itself, is, for Mr. Todd, a “delirium.”

For students of the Vietnam War, there is much in Mr. Todd’s book that recalls the historian Loren Baritz’s classic 1985 book, “Backfire,” which drew on popular culture, patriotic mythology and management theory to explain what had led the United States astray in Vietnam. Mr. Baritz concluded, “We are what went wrong in Vietnam.” Had Lyndon Johnson managed to impose his will on the Vietnamese, Mr. Baritz reflected, “an entire culture would have been utterly destroyed out of the goodness of the American heart.”

One is constantly reading in the papers that Vladimir Putin is a threat to the Western order. Maybe. But the larger threat to the Western order is the hubris of those who run it.

Fighting a war based on values requires good values. At a bare minimum it requires an agreement on the values being spread, and the United States is further from such agreement than it has ever been in its history — further, even, than it was on the eve of the Civil War. At times it seems there are no national principles, only partisan ones, with each side convinced that the other is trying not just to run the government but also to capture the state.

Until some new consensus emerges, President Biden is misrepresenting his country in presenting it as stable and unified enough to commit to anything . Ukrainians are learning this at a steep cost.
