The new girl at school

By Holliebug

It was a normal day at school for me but the first for Sophie.she looked sad and shy so I introduced myself "hi I'm Vada what's your name?" "Sophie" she replied then blushed.I sat with her at lunch and asked about herself I found out that her parents divorced when she was 6 she lives with her mom and stepdad she has a stepsister who she loves dearly. This weekend I spent the night at Sophie's her sister is wonderful so is her mother but her stepfather is kinda cross bad day at work?Sophie came to school today with a black eye and fractured hand. I asked but she said she tripped and that day I believed her.I went to Sophie's today after school she got in trouble for not getting everything off the carpet. I heard lots of screaming then Sophie came in crying and said I had to go home.I didn't hear anything from Sophie that weekend.Monday, Sophie wasn't there monday evening I was watching the news there was a amber alert...for Sophie thoughts were racing through my head I called her house no one answered.I stayed up untill 3am wondering untill I was too tired to think anymore.the next day at school I saw her older sister and her parents.her sister gave me a look that I knew something was up.After school I called her sister these were her exact words "Vada I have to talk fast!""I need you Vada My Father murdered Sophie!""I don't know where she is".......silence...... Then screaming untill the line went dead I didn't know what to do! Would the police belive me?is Sophie dead? Is her sister ok? I waited untill 1am then did the bravest thing in my life I went to sophie's I threw rocks at her sisters window."Vada! I'm coming down!" she told me the whole thing.I asked where is she? She thinks she is in the forest behind their house we searched for 2 hours we started to head back untill we found a blood trail we followed it and found a box we looked inside and found Sophie.I started crying I barely could tell it was her she was so decapitated and bloody.we called 911 Sophie was pronounced dead at the scene cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen, head and spine she also suffered from mulitple stab wounds. essay the new girl at school

5 Steps That'll Help Her Ace Being the New Girl

Despite what movies and sitcoms have shown us, being the new girl at school doesn’t have to be filled with drama. The truth is that it’s an awesome opportunity for your daughter to expand her friend base, try new activities, and generally have a fresh start. Walk her through these five tips to help her rule the school.

  • Sign up for something The cool thing about most middle and high schools is that there are clubs for just about anything she might be interested in—from stargazing and drama club to the Model U.N. Even elementary schools often have fun groups like Girl Scouts that she could sign up for. Plus, these lunchtime or after-school activities are one of the easiest ways to meet other girls who share her passions—when everyone involved cares about the same things, there’s no need for a creative ice breaker to start a conversation.
  • Let your freak flag fly Remind your girl that being true to herself—quirks and all—will lead to genuine friendships based on similar senses of humor; common interests; and, most of all, trust. If she tries to be something she’s not or exaggerates stories about her past, the other kids will ultimately figure it out and may feel betrayed that she wasn’t authentically herself to begin with. If Luna Lovegood found her tribe at Hogwarts (and she did!), your girl will find hers, too.
  • Bring the fun Waiting around to be invited to parties and other activities—especially when all the other students seem to have known each other for years—can make anyone feel lonely. So instead of sitting by and hoping someone will think to include her, encourage your daughter to invite other kids to join  her  for tacos after class or to come over for ice cream and a movie on the weekend. Yes, this might require a bit more work on your end when it comes to hosting neighborhood kids—and possibly initiating the playdates yourself if your daughter is too young—but it will pay off when you see your girl forming meaningful new friendships.
  • Ask questions Fact: everyone likes to think they’re an expert on something—so suggest that your daughter ask the girl next to her in homeroom to give her the skinny on who’s who and what’s what on campus. Similarly, in the lunch line, she’ll likely have no trouble finding someone willing to help her suss out what’s actually good and which mystery meals she should avoid at all costs. If your daughter is very young, or simply shy, you might want to role-play these scenarios with her at home. Although none of her questions are guaranteed to end in friendship, they’ll send a signal to other students that she’s approachable and could lead her to get to know a variety of new people.
  • Don’t be a try hard Making new friends is always exciting, but when you’re the new girl at school, it can actually feel like winning the lottery—or at least like grabbing hold of a life preserver in the middle of rocky waters. Still, remind your daughter that she’ll do best if she relaxes and lets friendship take its natural course. Suddenly dressing exactly like her bio lab mate or liking every one of a new friend’s Insta posts all the way back to  2013  isn’t a cute look and can actually scare people off! Not everyone she meets will turn out to be a good friend—and that’s OK. The important thing is for her to feel comfortable in her own skin and seek out friends who seem just as interested in learning about her as she is about them.

Ouch. There's almost nothing more hurtful she could say to you.

Is your girl at risk for any of these dangerous trends? Find out.

Does your girl say any of these things?

The New School 2023-24 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide

Regular Decision Deadline: Jan 15

You Have:

The New School 2023-24 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 2 essays of 400 words each

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why , Community

The New School asks applicants to respond to two essay prompts in 400 words or fewer. It’s very possible that if you’re applying to a specific major, you may have to write a third essay! We recommend starting your application in the Common App to see what’s in store. In the meantime, let’s dive into the two essays all students have to write!

In your study or work at The New School, what social issue or system would you make the focus of your efforts to effect change? (400 words)

The New School wants to welcome students to campus who not only want to make their mark, but also feel passionate about making the world a better place. The issue you choose to discuss can really run the gamut. Which social issues are close to your heart and why? Maybe you would love to address reproductive rights and expand healthcare access for people in historically underserved communities. Perhaps you’d like to address systemic racism and discrimination within your area of study. Remember to connect the social issue you’re passionate about to your vision of life at The New School. You should be able to point to specific examples of their offerings that will help you to effect change, whether they be classes, networking opportunities, research, etc.

What specific aspects of The New School’s academic programs or community drew you to apply? Please pay particular attention within your essay to the college, program, and/or campus to which you have applied. ( 400 words)

This is a pretty standard “why” essay that allows students to choose their line of focus: academics or community. Admissions wants to know what has inspired you to apply, so save their time (and yours) by cutting to the chase. Of course, brevity isn’t the same as generality, so make your point with specifics. As with any other “why” essay, take some time to do your research. Scour your program’s website for information about classes, professors, unique opportunities, and notable alumni. What catches your eye? What inspires you? How does it connect to an interest you have? How does The New School’s unique curriculum satisfy your needs in a way no other school could? If the community drew you in, why is that? Have you heard wonderful things from your older brother who attends? Do you dream of studying in New York City? (If so, why is The New School the NYC institution for you, out of all the myriad options in the area?) This is your opportunity to impress admissions with your knowledge of what The New School has to offer, your vision for your future, and why those two things are aligned.

Pretzel vendor and little girl running toward him

Heartwarming footage captures a little girl running into the arms of a local pretzel vendor outside her New York City preschool after she returned from vacation.

The child’s mom, Tina Mangan, told The Post on Sunday that she was uneasy at first watching 4-year-old daughter Madison recently sprinting down the sidewalk along busy Canal Street in Manhattan after school — until she saw the little girl head straight into the arms of the pretzel-cart seller, a sweet scene captured in a TikTok video that has gone viral since the mother posted it last week.

Little girl and pretzel man hugging

“I was like nervous at first because she was running, and it’s like on the busiest street ever,” Mangan said. Then “he just put his arms out … and I was like, ‘Oh my God, what’s happening?’ And I pulled out my phone so quick.

“I just remember hitting the zoom, and that’s when I saw him bend down to give her a hug,” the mom said.

Mangan said the pretzel-cart owner has watched Madison and her younger daughter Michaela, who is turning 1 this week, grow up while parking his cart directly across the street from their preschool.

“Every time it’s a nice day when the spring season approaches, Madison gets so excited and is like, ‘Do you think the pretzel guy is going to be there?’ And I’m like, ‘I hope so!’ ” the mom said.

“We live in SoHo, just around the corner, and it’s just like a big surprise around the corner if he’s there or not,” Mangan added.

Little girl

“He’s honestly just the sweetest, kindest man and is always the first one to give you a cold bottle of water for free on a hot day and always stops to give a high-five. She loves giving him a high-five like that,” she said of her 4-year-old.

The  video  was posted by Mangan under her handle BasicallySoho, an account for her  luxury baby sleepwear brand , and quickly gained over 2 million views this weekend.

“The sweetest pretzel man: he parks his cart outside of my daughter’s school and she loves giving him high fives when she walks by,” she wrote in the caption of the video.

“She was on vacation for a week and missed him. When I picked her up from school today, she literally ran into his arms,” the mom added.

Mangan declined to share the vendor’s name with The Post, saying she hadn’t seen him since the video went viral over the weekend and wanted to connect with him about his newfound local stardom first.

mom and daughter

Her sweet post received hundreds of comments from fellow New Yorkers, many expressing that they also share a special bond with their neighborhood food stand vendor.

“I got emotional when I had to say goodbye to my coffee cart man when I moved from NYC. They become stitches in the fabric of your daily life,” one person wrote.

Another chimed in, “This is exactly how I think New York kids grow up. Favorite vendor since childhood, same bodega spot so cute.”

For Mangan, she’s “just happy to share the happiness and humanity in New York City,” she said.

It shows “it’s OK to raise kids in New York City,” she added. “There’s kind people all around.”

Ambulance and police cars parked outside school

Girl arrested after two teachers and pupil stabbed at south Wales school

Three taken to hospital after incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman and teenager held on suspicion of attempted murder

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two teachers and a pupil were stabbed at a school in south-west Wales.

Dyfed-Powys police said the injuries were not life-threatening and officers were continuing to investigate the incident after they were called to Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Carmarthenshire at 11.20am on Wednesday.

Supt Ross Evans, the Carmarthenshire commander, said: “Emergency services immediately attended and the school was locked down for the safety of all on the premises. Three people – two teachers and a teenage pupil – have been taken to hospital with stab wounds.

“The family members of all those injured have been informed. A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody. A knife has been recovered in evidence.”

Evans said police were working with the school and other agencies to ensure support was available after the “very distressing incident”. He asked that people stop circulating footage of the incident on social media to avoid contempt of court and causing further distress. He added that officers would be in the area in the coming days.

By Wednesday evening, only a few police vehicles remained behind the school gates as calm descended on the small former mining town.

One mother of two children at the school who arrived at the neighbouring leisure centre said they were “shaken” by the day but saw and heard very little other than the “gossip” of schoolmates.

“They know that two teachers were hurt, there’s speculation as to who did what to who,” she said. “We’re just relieved it wasn’t them who were hurt … You would never expect something like this to happen here.”

The school’s headteacher said he was “proud” of students’ response to the incident. In a statement posted on the school website, James Durbridge said: “Today has been a very difficult day for us all in the school. It goes without saying that my thoughts are with the three individuals and their families, who have been affected by today’s incident.

“I wish to commend all staff and pupils for their calm and mature response during today’s lockdown. We are proud to have witnessed pupils embodying the school’s core values while supporting their peers and staff.”

The BBC named one of the injured teachers as Fiona Elias, the head of year seven.

Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, which translates as Amman Valley school, would remain closed on Thursday to allow police to carry out investigations, said Darren Price, the leader of Carmarthenshire county council. Praising the school’s response to the “shocking incident”, he said wellbeing support would be available for pupils, parents and staff, and that lessons would be moved online.

Emergency services were at the scene throughout Wednesday. The Welsh ambulance service sent four emergency ambulances and a hazardous area response team to the scene. Air ambulance helicopters also attended.

The school released pupils at 3.20pm, where they were hugged by tearful parents who had gathered to wait for them.

The first minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething, said on X that he was shocked by the incident. “A deeply worrying time for the school, families and community. Diolch [thank you] to first responders,” he added.

The UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, said he was “shocked” at the news, while the home secretary, James Cleverly, praised police and medical services for “acting so promptly” and asserted that the school system and life in the UK were “very safe”. Jonathan Edwards, the independent MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, said the incident was a “huge shock” and he could not recall anything like it happening in Wales before.

Adam Price, the Plaid Cymru MS for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, who attended the school, said it was “an excellent school in a really close-knit community”. He said there would be lessons to learn from the incident to “minimise – as far as is ever humanly possible – the chances of this ever happening again in Ammanford, or any other community in Wales”.

Social media posts sent from the scene showed a heavy police presence as well as a large number of people waiting outside the school gates. Further footage showed air ambulance helicopters taking off from the school grounds.

One parent, Charlotte Rogers, who was waiting for her daughter to leave the school, said: “She said she was scared. She’s a tough cookie, so fingers crossed. I just want to give her a big hug. I just want everyone to be safe. This shouldn’t have happened. At the end of the day, they should have had measures in place beforehand, when they first opened the school, to make sure it was safe for them.”

Ysgol Dyffryn Aman is a bilingual and mixed-gender comprehensive school with about 2,000 pupils. It is known for the sporting prowess of its alumni, who include the former Welsh rugby international Shane Williams, the England rugby player Harry Randall and the Wales rugby captains Hannah Jones and Jac Morgan.

Dyfed-Powys police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Anyone with information that could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to Dyfed-Powys police through a dedicated public portal .

Can Nonprofit News Save the South From Itself?

A photograph of newspaper vending machines lined up against the broadside of a building.

By Margaret Renkl

Ms. Renkl is a contributing Opinion writer who covers flora, fauna, politics and culture in the American South from Nashville.

When I moved here in 1987, Nashville had two daily newspapers: a morning paper, The Tennessean, whose editorial page leaned left; and an evening paper, the Nashville Banner, whose editorial page leaned right. I still a subscribe to The Tennessean, but the Banner is long gone. In 1998, The Tennessean bought its longtime competitor and shut it down.

I recall with fondness that venerable newspaper , no matter that its editorial page did not align with my own politics. Some of the local journalists I most admire got their start at the Banner. And a city with competing newsrooms, each determined to get the news first and to get it right, is protected by a powerful bulwark against extremism and governmental mischief. In a democracy, the only way to be sure there isn’t a fox watching the henhouse is to set a whole bunch of reporters the task of watching the foxes.

Today less than a dozen U.S. cities have two competing daily newspapers, and many communities have no local news source at all . Nashville, like many other midsize cities, still has television news channels, an alternative newsweekly (the Nashville Scene ) and various online publications to do some of that henhouse-watching. Nevertheless, the combined ranks of reporters covering crucial beats like state and local politics, education, criminal justice and the like, are dramatically smaller than they were in the days when the Tennessean and the Banner, each fully staffed and fully funded, were scrapping for scoops.

It’s hard to conceive of a local newspaper, in print or online, that’s fully staffed and fully funded anymore. Gannett, the largest newspaper chain in the country, owns the daily newspaper in three of the four largest Tennessee cities, including The Tennessean in Nashville. In 2019 it fought off a hostile takeover by a predatory hedge fund but later in the same year was forced to merge with another fund-backed company .

The fallout has been catastrophic: dozens of newspapers shuttered , more than half the staff jettisoned , journalists in revolt — the list goes on and on. “The scale of local news destruction in Gannett’s markets is astonishing,” reads the headline on an analysis by Joshua Benton for Harvard’s Neiman Lab last year. And Gannett’s plundering of its own newspapers’ resources is far from the only trouble facing the news industry.

Into this media landscape, the veteran Nashville journalist Steve Cavendish has launched a 21st century Nashville Banner as a daily online source of local news. The new Banner shares nothing with the old Banner but the name and a commitment to local journalism. Like the Tennessee Lookout , a daily digital publication that began operations in 2020 , and WPLN News , Nashville’s NPR affiliate, the new Banner is not locked behind a paywall. Also like the Lookout and WPLN — as well as outlets like the Daily Memphian and MLK50 in Memphis — the new Banner is a nonprofit newsroom. Mr. Cavendish believes that difference represents the future of viable local journalism: “The only successful startups at the local level in the last 20 years have been on the nonprofit side,” he told me in a phone interview.

I first met Mr. Cavendish when he was editor of the Nashville City Paper, an alternative newsweekly, and I was editor of Chapter 16 , a nonprofit source of Tennessee-related literary coverage. Chapter 16 provides book reviews and author interviews, without charge, to newspaper partners across the state. The City Paper, once one of its partners, no longer exists. Chapter 16 is doing fine.

Another difference between the new Banner and newspapers of old is that Demetria Kalodimos, a renowned Nashville broadcast journalist, serves as the organization’s executive producer. She heads up its video and podcast divisions.

Already Ms. Kalodimos and her team have created a number of mini documentaries, including one based on vintage footage of civil rights demonstrations in Nashville. In 1960, a Fisk University student, Diane Nash, confronted Mayor Ben West outside the Nashville courthouse. In their exchange he admitted that he recognized the injustice of segregation. Shortly thereafter, Nashville became the first major city in the South to desegregate its lunch counters. The Banner video provides historical context to a news report about Ms. Nash’s return to Nashville on April 20 to speak at a ceremony marking the renaming of the historic courthouse plaza in her honor.

Black history has once again become a contentious issue in the South, with revisionist politicians passing legislation that limits how race can be taught, or even discussed, in schools. In the Banner’s package on Diane Nash, video and news reports work together to provide a straightforward account of historical facts and their ramifications today. There is nothing that could possibly be called partisan about either piece.

That’s by design. Hoping to avoid partisan rancor, Mr. Cavendish and Ms. Kalodimos have positioned the new Banner as a strictly-news publication, without editorials, op-eds, or candidate endorsements. “All the money that we have, we’re putting into news reporting,” Mr. Cavendish said. “Because we want so much in terms of news.”

Even so, avoiding partisan accusations will be a challenge in this Republican-supermajority state. Donald Trump spent his presidency calling journalists the enemy of the people , and hostility toward the press is a hallmark of the MAGA movement . A label like nonpartisan is unlikely to change that attitude.

But Nashville — progressive, vibrant, growing — may be the best place to break through hyperpartisan fury. If old school public-service journalism can make it anywhere, it can make it here. In that sense, the new Banner is not in competition with other equally necessary news organizations in the city. It’s another much needed element in a journalistic network working to repair the atomized landscape of local news.

There is still, of course, the constant question of money. Even with the financial support of institutions like the MacArthur Foundation , the Knight Foundation , the Institute for Nonprofit News and the American Journalism Project , among others, nonprofit newsrooms survive only when they have the financial support of their readers and listeners. And in this era of proliferating websites and podcasts and videos and newsletters, not even to mention the unceasing social media updates from journalists and “citizen journalists,” engaging an audience long enough to count on its loyalty, much less its dollars, may be the greatest challenge of all.

It can sometimes feel like a job, keeping up with all this news.

Perhaps it feels like a job because it is a job. The work of democracy, the responsibility of democracy, is to be an informed citizen, a person whose news sources are wide and varied and committed to getting at the truth, no matter how assiduously our elected officials work to obscure it. The worst thing that could happen to democracy — especially in red states like Tennessee, where government is not remotely working on behalf of its own people, and often can’t even be bothered to respond to them — is for local journalism to fall apart.

In Nashville as in nearly everywhere else where it survives at all, local news has already come perilously close to falling apart. But the Nashville Banner, a long-dead local newspaper, has formally rejoined the world as a nonpartisan, nonprofit digital newsroom, and that’s the best news for local democracy that I’ve heard in a long, long time.

The Banner is dead. Long live the Banner.
