November 30, 2018, The Examination Board of the Ministry of Education Malaysia announced the new Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3, PT3 (Form Three Assessment) format for form 3 KSSM English starting from 2019!

English is one of the crucial subjects to score an ‘A’. It is the key point that will determine whether or not you are able to pursue your dream course in college and even university. Once you further your studies at the tertiary level, you will find out that most of the subject taught are in English, especially if you take science and mathematics subjects.

Although not as crucial and life changing as Malaysia’s penultimate examination, PT3 is in fact, an examination to prepare you for that final secondary school examination, Sijil Pentaksiran Malaysia (SPM).

This implementation of the new format can be seen as a significant effort to revise the English language education system in the country for the better.  Since SPM format has also changed and aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which is an international standard for describing language ability, PT3 has then received the changes earlier than SPM to prepare the students for the upcoming exam.

Believe me, the changes done will make you appreciate this later in life! Finally, the government has implemented a change that will actually help you out in the real world.

As we go on, you will understand deeper on how the latest examination format is easier and better than the previous format.

The Perks of The Latest 2021 PT3 English Format

PT3 student last minute revision

PT3 has been revised starting in 2020. This revision aims to strengthen the School Based Assessments (SBA). Previously, the implementation of PT3 depended on the shared accountability between school and Examination Board (EB) by taking the Centralised Assessments, Pentaksiran Pusat (PP).

However, the revised PT3 has increased the school’s responsibility in the summative assessment for 18 subjects apart from the 5 listed subjects which are still maintained under the PP. These steps are one of the MOE’s efforts to increase the level in the teaching profession and recognize the professionalism of a teacher in doing assessments.

The 5 subjects are Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris, Hifz Al-Quran (KBT), Pendidikan Kesenian (Sekolah Seni Malaysia) and Al-Lughah Al-Arabia Al-Muasirah (KBP)- Listening Test. These subjects will be done by PP because it needs to be certified by other entities such as JPA and CAIE. Besides, these subjects need specialized professionals to make the assessments such as by the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia Arts and Cultures and Jakim.

Below is the breakdown of the 18 subjects that will be taken charge by the school.

  • Design & Technology
  • Fundamental of Computer Science
  • Islamic Studies
  • Bahasa Cina
  • Bahasa Tamil
  • Bahasa Arab
  • Bahasa Iban
  • Bahasa Kadazandusun
  • Bahasa Punjabi
  • Bahasa Semai
  • Maharat al-Quran (KBT)
  • Usul al-din (KBD)
  • Al-syariah (KBD)
  • Al-Lughah al-Arabiah Al Muasirah (KBD) – Speaking and Writing

In the prior year, the Examination Board was only responsible in preparing the assessment instrument and marking scheme to ensure the execution meets the assurance quality. However, with the revision done, the board will only prepare the test specification (JSU), assessment format, as well as providing personnel training in assessment and quality assurance.

While previously, the school would need to arrange on how to do the assessment instrument, administration, reporting and quality assurance.  Now, the school will be the one to prepare the assessment instruments, the scoring manuals, justification of scoring, along with the administration, reporting and ensuring quality assurance.

Starting from 2020, the state and district education centre, JPN and PPD, will be on board to continuously provide training to personnel, checking the quality of instruments as well as the administration and managing instruments for schools with lower number of pupils (SKM) and also schools that have less number of subject teachers.

You are now able to download the latest revision on PT3 2021. You can also check out the marking scheme for PT3 English papers too.

Changes To English Paper Format For PT3 2021

Discussing PT3 Assessment Format

As we know, the Standard Based Curriculum for Secondary School (KSSM) has been introduced in 2017. The changes have also been made to the English Language to align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). CEFR combines summative and formative assessment in the construction of English PT3 paper.

In the prior year, students who sit for PT3 will need to take 2 English subjects, Written English Paper (100 marks) and Oral English (50 marks total) which comprise the Speaking Test (30 marks) and Listening Test (20 marks).

However, starting in 2019, there are only one comprehensive English paper to sit for which comprises of the 4 segments below :-

  • Reading English Paper 1 - 40 Marks (Weighted average 25%)
  • Written English Paper 2 - 40 Marks (Weighted average 25%)
  • Speaking Test - 20 Marks (Weighted average 25%)
  • Listening Test - 25 Marks (Weighted average 25%)

Frankly, the new format will allow students to be able to master English language as a whole. Previously, the English examination will only focus more on writing and reading comprehension. Today, with the half weightage given to speaking and listening, the student must be equally good in oral or verbal communication.

Below is the detailed format of PT3 breakdown.

PT3 Examination Instruments’ Format 2021

Bahasa Inggeris (English, 12)

The format is also similar to SPM English format. So here, students are able to ensure their readiness in taking SPM by looking at their PT3 result. Check out the essay writing tips we got for English PT3.

The Aims of PT3 English 2021 Examination

The adoption of CEFR in assessing English language is perceived as one of the procedures to meet the international standard for specific needs of the learners. According to the Ministry of Education, the form 3 students should at least reach B2 level of CEFR for English Language.

The new syllabus allows students to develop new language skills on structures, language functions and vocabularies. Somehow, with the implementation and revision of the assessment, the main objective is to empower the students’ English Proficiency level.

B2 is the highest level for CEFR in high school standards. However, the students can achieve a much greater level to C1 and C2. Mainly, CEFR will cover 5 language skills essential for students.

  • Making conversation (Spoken Interaction)
  • Replying to conversation (Spoken Production)

How to Score in PT3 Latest 2021 Format

Muslim PT3 Student Make A Doa

For this part, Superprof has a few killer tips for scoring a good grade in PT3 to share with you. I know everybody will feel the adrenaline rush whenever we receive the assessment paper from the teacher. What we usually do is to hurriedly open the first page and start answering. We thought that would be the most ideal way to tackle the paper due to the time constraint.

However, that is the biggest mistake that we always make!

Let’s see the step by step to start answering the paper.

  • While waiting for the paper to be distributed, say a little prayer in your own way. That will make you feel calmer.
  • start by reading the test instruction.
  • be mindful of how long the test is going to take and
  • how many questions there will be.
  • scan the whole paper quickly to get the insight on the questions
  • glance at the time allocated for each section and
  • plan on how long you should answer each question.
  • allocate at least 5 minute for double checking your answer
  • The worst enemy during the test is TIME! So please stay true to the allocated time.
  • Do not forget to check your answer.

Check out the Complete Guide to PT3 English .

What’s more, you need to keep doing is PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE.

“Practice Makes Perfect”

If you aren’t able to improve by yourself, seek help. You can ask your peers, teachers or even get a tutor! Superprof has a line of qualified tutors that is available to tailor to your needs. You know there is a Malay Proverbs saying,

For teachers and students, fast and easy ways to write your email/note/postcard: question 3(j).

essay tips pt3

Previously, I’ve posted  an entry on How to start and end question 3(J) and it’s been well received and I’ve also gotten some valuable feedbacks from our readers. I also mentioned that I might share with you a cycle that I normally introduce to my learners.  So, why not now? The test is closer now that it is July, I am sure you guys are feeling more anxious now. Maybe this could help you.

*The usefulness of this cycle is very subjective, if you do not think it will work with your learners, I welcome you to write to me and we can chat 🙂

PT3 Papers have certain ways of constructing this question. There is almost a pattern in the things they ask for.

In almost all the question types that have been asked out there, you will most probably be asked to :

  • invite/suggest/recommend
  • give 1 or more reasons
  • encourage someone to take action

It does not run away from this. Therefore, all you need to do is to link all of them together and try to make your writing sound as natural and interesting as you can.

In my previous post  How to start and end question 3(J),  I have explained how you can start and end with some ready-to-go phrases.

In here you will find some more help for you to go about with your content:

  • This is to make sure you are on the right direction. It also helps you to make sure you answer the question.
  • It is very important that you give AT LEAST 2 reasons to show that you understand what the question asks.
  • In 2017, the question changed its format and ASK FOR ONLY 1 REASON . It killed many students and it showed that many students either don’t read the question properly or don’t understand the difference between ‘REASONS’ and ‘REASON’
  • As TEACHERS , it’s extremely important to brief your students on this and make it a point for them to READ the questions. EVERY QUESTION should be READ and DISSECTED!
  • Use connecting words to help arrange your points.
  • Some suggested sentence starters are there to help you build around the notes given from given text.
  • REASON 3 is optional but highly recommended if you feel that you don’t have much to say
  • Here are some very useful sentences I introduce to my student:
  • I know you like ______ right?
  • You are going to love it.
  • We can have fun together.
  • We can take a lot of pictures there.
  • What are you waiting for? Come and join me.

These may sound simple but they could be life saver for your weaker groups. They feel more confident when they have some sentences up their sleeve.

Just remind them try not to repeat the same sentence too often.

ENCOURAGEMENT

  • They always ask for this in the question. If you worry your students can’t understand the word, make it a point for them to write this in. I mean, it can’t be wrong, can it?
  • Just a sentence to end the whole writing.

The picture below may help you to better understand what I am talking about here:

essay tips pt3

From my experience, students feel less lost when they have a guideline like this.

The positive side of it:

  • It comes most useful with the weaker groups. They will be able to come up with something instead of nothing.
  • Some students like playing safe. This is SAFE.
  • They write quicker. Once they get used to the pattern, it’s faster for them to get it done.
  • Avoid a lot of weird language (grammar and tenses comedy)

The negative side of it:

  • You take away students’ creativity. They might stick with your samples language. If you want genuine products from them, this might not be what you’re looking for.
  • Expect a lot of similar answers. But hey, if it gets them to the shore, why not?
  • Also, many will still get it wrong. I’ve seen many learners still not able to connect the phrases into meaningful language. For this, I’m still looking for ways to help them, any ideas from you?

Essay writing tips – part 2

Here are some more tips to help you improve the quality of your English essays:

essay tips pt3

Tip #1 – Plan before you write. There are many reasons why you should plan an essay before writing it. One of those reasons responds to many students’ excuses for not planning. In an exam, students don’t plan their essays because they think they don’t have enough time. This is not true.

To illustrate this, let’s look at the speed that you must write at. If your writing exam lasts 1 hour and you must write an essay of about 300 words, this means that you must write 1 word every 12 seconds. The first GIF on the left shows you how quickly (!) you must write. Not very quickly, right?

However, if you spend 15 minutes brainstorming and planning your essay, and you leave 10 minutes to check your essay before the end of the exam, that still leaves you with 7 seconds to write each word. The second GIF shows you how slow that is also.

Furthermore, if you have created a good plan, this means that you will have plenty of good ideas in a logical order. As a result of that, you will be able to write far more quickly, with no stopping to scratch you head while you think of ideas. Another consequence of that is you can concentrate more on writing more accurate English. The final result of all this is that the quality of your essays will rise dramatically. You could actually spend 25 minutes planning very carefully and still have time to write and check your essay. Try it if you don’t believe me. My experience has shown me that students who plan their essays carefully write better essays – and get higher exam scores.

checking your essay

Tip #2 – Check your essay extremely carefully. This may sound obvious to you, but many students check too quickly. Their brain is telling them this: “I understand this bit, and I understand this bit, and I understand this bit…” etc. Or, “This looks right, and this looks right…” Of course you understand it. You wrote it. Of course it looks right when you quickly look at it. You must look at your work as if under a microscope. However, it is common for students not to leave enough time at the end of a writing exam and so they rush through the checking process. What will get you more points: doing a fast check of all your essay and finding two mistakes, or very carefully checking the first two paragraphs and finding twelve mistakes? Careful checking is essential. Look at each sentence and check grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Be mindful of spelling rules, like double consonants in gerunds (sit – sitting, swim – swimming). Check to see that the verb agrees with the subject ("My exams last year WERE easy," etc). Lastly, if you follow tip #1 , you will have plenty of time to check your work carefully.

planning your essay

Tip #3 – Be careful about problems of logic. If you are panicking during an English writing exam, very often you don’t notice logic problems in your ideas. You should ask yourself: Does this sentence answer the essay question? Is this sentence related to the topic sentence, and does it add strength to the paragraph? Does this sentence run logically after the previous sentence? Does this sentence need a conjunction (linking word/phrase) to help the reader understand my train of thought?

Here are two real examples that I have seen in student essays: “The products were expensive. As a result, buyers must pay more money for them.” The second sentence is obvious. It doesn’t add an extra idea. It’s not really a result because “expensive” means “more money.” It’s a form of repetition – and repetition is very bad essay style: it’s boring to read and will score you fewer points. A similar example is this: “Climate change is a consequence of global warming.” NO! Global warming IS climate change.

Tip # 4 - Cut out all repetition. This follows on from tip #3 . I see many forms of repetition in essays. First, students sometimes repeat the subject of a sentence in the next sentence instead of using a pronoun. Consider this example: “The vase which was on my mother’s coffee table was very expensive. My mother bought the vase which is on my mother’s coffee table last year. I broke the vase which is on my mother’s coffee table yesterday.”

This student thought, “I want to write more words because more words means more points.” This is not true. I took away points for this. The student should’ve written: “The vase which was on my mother’s coffee table was very expensive. She bought it last year. I broke it yesterday.” If you think “I need more words” this is because you really need more ideas. And you get more ideas if you brainstorm and plan (tip #1 ).

Second, another form of repetition is writing synonyms, or similar sentences one after another. Look at this: “He ate a large, big, huge dinner.” You only need one of these adjectives. Similarly: “It was raining, and the weather was wet.”

I hope these tips have helped you. I will give more essay tips on my blog at a later date.

If there is a topic that you want me to write about, fill in a form at the bottom of the homepage and send it to me, or you can post it on the Video English Facebook page. If you have little questions on any English topic, ask me those as well. I will write all of my answers to your questions in a Q&A blog post some time soon.

Happy writing!
