Transforming Education in India: A Journey from Tradition to Innovation

India, a land steeped in rich cultural heritage, has a vibrant history of imparting knowledge and education dating back to ancient times. This nation has witnessed a massive transformation in its education system, evolving from traditional Gurukuls to modern schools and now to online colleges. This article will delve into the evolution of the Indian education system, highlighting its historical roots, current status, future prospects, and the transformative role of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Unravelling India's Educational Heritage

Traditionally, Indian education was primarily reserved for the upper castes. However, societal evolution has bridged this gap, and today, education is universally accessible, regardless of caste, social class, or any other differentiating factors.

The first education system in India, dating back to 5000 BC, was the 'Gurukula' system. In this model, a student (shishya) would approach a teacher (Guru) for admission. If accepted, the student would stay with the Guru, assisting with household chores while learning practical skills, science, mathematics, philosophy, and metaphysics. This holistic education system emphasizes the development of human values and the practical implementation of knowledge to solve real-world problems.

However, the Gurukula system was eventually replaced by the modern school system introduced to India in 1830 by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay. This system prioritized science and mathematics, with less emphasis on philosophy, ethics, moral values, and metaphysics. The medium of communication was also changed to English.

Current State of Education in India: Facts & Figures

Under the 2020 amendment to India's Right to Education Act, free and compulsory education is ensured for every child aged 3-18. Here are some statistics related to India's education system:

26% of the Indian population, approximately 1.39 billion, falls within the primary education sector (0-14 years).

18% of the Indian population, roughly 500 million, fall within the secondary and higher education sector (15-24 years).

The adult (15+ years) literacy rate in India is 69.3%, with male literacy at 78.8% and female at 59.3%.

Kerala boasts the highest literacy rate in India.

University of Delhi is the most popular higher education institution in India, followed by IIT Bombay.

In the 2019 English Proficiency Index, India ranked 34th among 100 nations.

Future Prospects for India's Education System

India's future aims for its education system are ambitious and progressive. Initiatives such as the United Nation's E9 Initiative, launched in April 2021, aim to encourage digital learning, specifically targeting marginalized groups, particularly girls. The Union Budget of 2021-22 allocated $7.56 billion for school education and $5.28 billion for higher education. It is estimated that by 2030, more than 20 Indian higher education universities will rank among the top 200 universities globally.

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020: A Game-Changer

The NEP 2020, introduced by the Government of India, seeks to reform the Indian education system by replacing rote learning with competency-based learning. The policy aims to produce engaged, productive citizens capable of fostering an equitable, inclusive, and plural society.

The NEP 2020 replaces the existing 10+2 academic structure (ages 6-16 and ages 16-18) with a 5+3+3+4 structure, emphasizing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). It also focuses on the inclusion of Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs).

The NEP 2020 also emphasizes online education to meet present and future challenges in providing quality education. Online education breaks away from the traditional 6-hour-long classroom system, focusing instead on the practical application of learned skills. Some advantages of online education include flexibility, affordability, diverse options, efficient Learning Management Systems (LMS), and effective time management.

Open Learning and Distance Education System in India

Open and distance education plays a crucial role in increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER). The government has set measures to improve the open and distance learning infrastructure, promoting a blend of online and distance education.

The transformation of India's education system is an ongoing journey. With the introduction of the NEP 2020 and the growing focus on online and distance learning, India is poised for a revolutionary shift in its educational landscape.

This transformation, however, requires a systemic approach, active stakeholder involvement, and a commitment to improving the quality of education across all levels. Only then can India truly harness the potential of its vast youth population and pave the way for a brighter, more educated future.

However, while it is one of the oldest systems, it is still not that developed when compared to others, which are in fact newer. This is so as the other countries have gone through growth and advancement, but the Indian education system is still stuck in old age. It faces a lot of problems that need to be sorted to let it reach its full potential.

Problems with Indian Education System

Our Indian education system faces a lot of problems that do not let it prosper and help other children succeed in life . The biggest problem which it has to face is the poor grading system. It judges the intelligence of a student on the basis of academics which is in the form of exam papers. That is very unfair to students who are good in their overall performance but not that good at specific subjects.

Moreover, they only strive to get good marks not paying attention to understanding what is taught. In other words, this encourages getting good marks through mugging up and not actually grasping the concept efficiently.

Furthermore, we see how the Indian education system focuses on theory more. Only a little percentage is given for practical. This makes them run after the bookish knowledge and not actually applying it to the real world. This practice makes them perplexed when they go out in the real world due to lack of practical knowledge.

Most importantly, the Indian education system does not emphasize enough on the importance of sports and arts. Students are always asked to study all the time where they get no time for other activities like sports and arts.

How Can We Improve Indian Education System?

As the Indian Education System is facing so many problems, we need to come up with effective solutions so it improves and creates a brighter future for students . We can start by focusing on the skill development of the students. The schools and colleges must not only focus on the ranks and grades but on the analytical and creative skills of children.

In addition, subjects must not be merely taught theoretically but with practical. This will help in a better understanding of the subject without them having to mug up the whole thing due to lack of practical knowledge. Also, the syllabus must be updated with the changing times and not follow the old age pattern.

Other than that, the government and private colleges must now increase the payroll of teachers. As they clearly deserve more than what they offer. To save money, the schools hire teachers who are not qualified enough. This creates a very bad classroom environment and learning. They must be hired if they are fit for the job and not because they are working at a lesser salary.

In conclusion, the Indian education system must change for the better. It must give the students equal opportunities to shine better in the future. We need to let go of the old and traditional ways and enhance the teaching standards so our youth can get create a better world.

Imagine schools the way we have witnessed them for centuries - a model with students divided by grades, learning a curriculum that is standardised to their age, broken down into four to five major subject areas, and being subject to evaluation via examinations.

Now, imagine a different approach along with the existing framework. A school as a learning hub for students, honing global citizens who are aware of their social responsibilities and thrive on innovation and creativity. A center that nudges students to learn in their own ways, at their own pace. An institution that challenges them to solve real-world problems. This, I believe, will be the cornerstone of the future-looking schools of tomorrow.

In fact, the tide has already turned and we have made major strides towards a reimagined education system. The pandemic did to the education system, what cell phones perhaps did to the way we communicate with each other - set it on a path of transformation.

We now realise education must be seen in the broader context of the economy and development today. It must be relevant and responsive to the rapidly changing ecosystem. We have been forced to rethink how we design schools, learning pedagogies and who we put at the centre of that design. We will be learning, adapting, and constantly evolving this design.

A FUTURE PROOF LEARNING APPROACH

It is perhaps a unanimous agreement that education, across the spectrum, must evolve to equip children with the skills they need to thrive in a world that is ever-changing and unpredictable. Think about it. 85 percent of all jobs in 2030 have not been invented yet and this is a cycle that will continue.

A must for education now, and in the next decade would be to be relevant to the workplaces of the future. This means students will be taught skills that are essential to their success. They will be prepared for jobs that have not yet been created, for technologies that have not yet been invented, and to solve unpredictable issues that aren't yet anticipated.

While technical skills will remain essential, soft skills will gain prominence, making them an integral part of learning. Skills such as complex problem solving, creativity, innovation, analytical thinking, emotional intelligence, and empathy will be critical in a future-proof curriculum.

By imagining alternative futures for education we can better think through the outcomes, develop agile and responsive systems and plan for future shocks.
What do the four OECD Scenarios for the Future of Schooling show us about how to transform and future-proof our education systems?

As we begin a new year, it is traditional to take stock of the past in order to look forward, to imagine and plan for a better future.

But the truth is that the future likes to surprise us. Schools open for business, teachers using digital technologies to augment, not replace, traditional face-to face-teaching and, indeed, even students hanging out casually in groups – all things we took for granted this time last year; all things that flew out the window in the first months of 2020.

To achieve our vision and prepare our education systems for the future, we have to consider not just the changes that appear most probable but also the ones that we are not expecting.

Scenarios for the future of schooling

Imagining alternative futures for education pushes us to think through plausible outcomes and helps agile and responsive systems to develop. The OECD Scenarios for the Future of Schooling depict some possible alternatives:

Rethinking, rewiring, re-envisioning

The underlying question is: to what extent are our current spaces, people, time and technology in schooling helping or hindering our vision? Will modernizing and fine-tuning the current system, the conceptual equivalent of reconfiguring the windows and doors of a house, allow us to achieve our goals? Is an entirely different approach to the organization of people, spaces, time and technology in education needed?

Modernizing and extending current schooling would be more or less what we see now: content and spaces that are largely standardized across the system, primarily school-based (including digital delivery and homework) and focused on individual learning experiences. Digital technology is increasingly present, but, as is currently the case, is primarily used as a delivery method to recreate existing content and pedagogies rather than to revolutionize teaching and learning.

What would transformation look like? It would involve re-envisioning the spaces where learning takes place; not simply by moving chairs and tables, but by using multiple physical and virtual spaces both in and outside of schools. There would be full individual personalization of content and pedagogy enabled by cutting-edge technology, using body information, facial expressions or neural signals.

We’d see flexible individual and group work on academic topics as well as on social and community needs. Reading, writing and calculating would happen as much as debating and reflecting in joint conversations. Students would learn with books and lectures as well as through hands-on work and creative expression. What if schools became learning hubs and used the strength of communities to deliver collaborative learning, building the role of non-formal and informal learning, and shifting time and relationships?

Alternatively, schools could disappear altogether. Built on rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality and the Internet of Things, in this future it is possible to assess and certify knowledge, skills and attitudes instantaneously. As the distinction between formal and informal learning disappears, individual learning advances by taking advantage of collective intelligence to solve real-life problems. While this scenario might seem far-fetched, we have already integrated much of our life into our smartphones, watches and digital personal assistants in a way that would have been unthinkable even a decade ago.

All of these scenarios have important implications for the goals and governance of education, as well as the teaching workforce. Schooling systems in many countries have already opened up to new stakeholders, decentralizing from the national to the local and, increasingly, to the international. Power has become more distributed, processes more inclusive. Consultation is giving way to co-creation.

We can construct an endless range of such scenarios. The future could be any combination of them and is likely to look very different in different places around the world. Despite this, such thinking gives us the tools to explore the consequences for the goals and functions of education, for the organization and structures, the education workforce and for public policies. Ultimately, it makes us think harder about the future we want for education. It often means resolving tensions and dilemmas:

What is the right balance between modernizing and disruption?
How do we reconcile new goals with old structures?
How do we support globally minded and locally rooted students and teachers?
How do we foster innovation while recognising the socially highly conservative nature of education?
How do we leverage new potential with existing capacity?
How do we reconfigure the spaces, the people, the time and the technologies to create powerful learning environments?
In the case of disagreement, whose voice counts?
Who is responsible for the most vulnerable members of our society?
If global digital corporations are the main providers, what kind of regulatory regime is required to solve the already thorny questions of data ownership, democracy and citizen empowerment?

Thinking about the future requires imagination and also rigour. We must guard against the temptation to choose a favourite future and prepare for it alone. In a world where shocks like pandemics and extreme weather events owing to climate change, social unrest and political polarization are expected to be more frequent, we cannot afford to be caught off guard again.

This is not a cry of despair – rather, it is a call to action. Education must be ready. We know the power of humanity and the importance of learning and growing throughout our life. We insist on the importance of education as a public good, regardless of the scenario for the future.

In an era marked by globalisation and rapid technological progress, the global integration of education has emerged as a pivotal element in the development strategies of nations worldwide.

India, with its promising higher education landscape, currently hosts approximately 38 million students across a staggering 50,000 educational institutions, including a noteworthy 1,057 universities.

Expanding Opportunities for Students and Professionals

India's ambitious goal of doubling its current gross enrolment rate of 26.3% to 50% by the year 2035 harmonizes seamlessly with the global perspective on higher education. Notably, India holds the distinction of being the second-largest contributor of international students globally. The National Education Policy of 2020 has pledged to open up India's traditionally tightly regulated academic system to the global stage, ushering in an era characterized by inclusivity and collaboration.

The year 2022 witnessed a significant resurgence in the number of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad, with more than 6.5 lakh students venturing overseas, as reported by the Ministry of Education. This marked a notable increase from 4.54 lakh in 2017 to 5.86 lakh in 2019.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a sharp decline, with only 2.59 lakh students going abroad in 2020. In 2021, over 4.4 lakh Indians pursued higher education overseas, reflecting a resilient spirit despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

In a bid to offer a global educational environment to Indian students within the nation's borders, the Ministry of Education has forged strategic MoUs with Australian universities, Deakin and Wollongong, enabling them to establish campuses in Gujarat's GIFT City. This move provides Indian students with diverse global education options without leaving their homeland.

India's Journey towards a Globally Competent Education Hub

In a world that is increasingly interconnected, India stands on the precipice of a transformative journey, internationalising its higher education landscape to foster a more globally connected academic community.

Moreover, with a target of raising the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035 and plans to add 35 million seats in higher education institutions, the government of India has undertaken various initiatives to facilitate students:

Flexible Curriculum: The policy advocates for flexible higher education curricula, empowering students to explore diverse subjects in accordance with global trends.

Multiple Entry/Exit Points: It encourages students to enter and exit their educational journey at various stages, promoting lifelong learning and skill development.

National Research Foundation: This foundation fosters a robust research culture, attracting international scholars and researchers.

Technology Integration: Emphasis is placed on equitable technology use, exemplified by the National Educational Technology Forum.

Multilingual Education: The policy promotes education in multiple languages to cater to diverse student preferences.

Indian Knowledge Systems: It integrates India's rich knowledge heritage into mainstream education while connecting with global knowledge.

Vocational Education Integration: The policy blends vocational education with general education to equip students with practical skills.

Industry-Academia Collaboration: It encourages closer ties between educational institutions and industries for curriculum alignment and internships.

Reskilling and Upskilling: Recognising the importance of lifelong learning in a rapidly changing job market.

Inclusive and Sustainable Skills: Inclusive skill development initiatives, including fee relief for women and marginalised communities.

International Mobility: Initiatives like the Livelihood program enhance Indian youth's global employability. The Government of India has opened doors to a more diverse student body and fosters international collaboration, expanding opportunities for students and professionals alike.

Fostering Workforce Development in a Highly Dynamic Environment

In today's business landscape, companies operate within a highly dynamic environment. The ever-evolving technology sector, competition emerging from new industry segments, shifts in regulations and political events exert multifaceted influences on businesses. Thankfully, learning companies are creating an environment for upskilling and reskilling while leveraging the synergies between their workforce skills and English language learning divisions. The ability to embrace lifelong learning is now a critical asset for career and workplace growth.

ELP Unlocking Global Opportunities for Indian Skilled Professionals

English language proficiency is one such skill that provides Indian skilled workers an advantage to compete globally. NEP has emphasised both digitisation and the use of technology in education.

Various platforms are available to prove English proficiency for work, study, or migration abroad; one such platform is PTE Academic. It serves as evidence of English-language proficiency for visa applications in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as for Indian students utilising the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for Canadian study applications.

As India opens its doors to diverse educational opportunities and facilitates international mobility, it not only expands horizons for its students but also strengthens its position on the global stage.

Initiatives aimed at curriculum flexibility, vocational integration, and industry-academia collaboration are shaping a more dynamic and responsive educational ecosystem.

Furthermore, India's efforts in workforce development, upskilling, and reskilling are essential in preparing its youth for the ever-evolving demands of the global job market. The Futures of Education

Our world is at a unique juncture in history, characterised by increasingly uncertain and complex trajectories shifting at an unprecedented speed. These sociological, ecological and technological trends are changing education systems, which need to adapt. Yet education has the most transformational potential to shape just and sustainable futures. UNESCO generates ideas, initiates public debate, and inspires research and action to renew education. This work aims to build a new social contract for education, grounded on principles of human rights, social justice, human dignity and cultural diversity. It unequivocally affirms education as a public endeavour and a common good.

No trend is destiny...Multiple alternative futures are possible... A new social contract for education needs to allow us to think differently about learning and the relationships between students, teachers, knowledge, and the world.

Our work is grounded in the principles of the 2021 report “Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education” and in the report’s call for action to consolidate global solidarity and international cooperation in education, as well as strengthen the global research agenda to reinforce our capacities to anticipate future change.

In 2019 UNESCO Director–General convened an independent International Commission to work under the leadership of the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. President Sahle-Work Zewde, and develop a global report on the Futures of Education. The commission was charged with carefully considering inputs received through the different consultation processes and ensuring that this collective intelligence was reflected in the global report and other knowledge products connected with the initiative.

Sustainable development challenges and the role of education

Our foresight work, looking towards 2050, envisions possible futures in which education shapes a better world. Our starting point is observation of the multiple, interlocking challenges the world currently faces and how to renew learning and knowledge to steer policies and practices along more sustainable pathways.The challenges are great. But there are reasons for optimism, no trend is destiny.

Our work responds to the call of the International Commission on the Futures of Education to guide a new research agenda for the futures of education. This research agenda is wide-ranging and multifaceted as a future-oriented, planet-wide learning process on our futures together. It draws from diverse forms of knowledge and perspectives, and from a conceptual framework that sees insights from diverse sources as complementary rather than exclusionary and adversarial.

The global population is projected to reach a peak at around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s , nearly double the global population of 1990 (5.3 billion)
There will be an estimated 170 million displaced people by 2050 , equivalent to 2.3% of the global population
Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to be home to some 1/3 of the global population by 2050

"A new social contract for education requires renewed commitment to global collaboration in support of education as a common good, premised on more just and equitable cooperation among state and non-state actors. Beyond North-South flows of aid to education, the generation of knowledge and evidence through South-South and triangular cooperation must be strengthened."

The number of persons aged 65 years or older worldwide is expected to double over the next three decades, reaching 1.6 billion in 2050 (16% of global population)

"Human longevity may also increase and perhaps with it, at least for some, the extension of the work period of life. If older people can remain active and engaged, they will enrich society and the economy through their skills and experience."

Global temperatures are expected to increase 2.7 degrees by 2100 , leading to devastating global consequences
Humans currently use as as many ecological resources as is we lived on 1.75 Earths

"The planet is in peril (...) Here children and youth already lead the way, calling for meaningful action and delivering a harsh rebuke to those who refuse to face the urgency of the situation. (...) One of the best strategies to prepare for green economies and a carbon-neutral future is to ensure qualifications, programmes and curricula deliver ‘green skills’, be they for newly emerging occupations and sectors or for those sectors undergoing transformation for the low-carbon economy."

Global freedom has been declining for more than 15 years

"There has been a flourishing of increasingly active citizen participation and activism that is challenging discrimination and injustice worldwide (...) In educational content, methods and policy, we should promote active citizenship and democratic participation."

There will be an estimated 380 million higher education students by 2030, up from roughly 220 million students were enrolled in formal post-secondary education in 2021

"Digital technologies, tools and platforms can be bent in the direction of supporting human rights, enhancing human capabilities, and facilitating collective action in the directions of peace, justice, and sustainability (...) Employers anticipate a structural “labour market churn” (or disruption) of 23% of jobs in the next five years, resulting in a net decrease of 2% of current employment due to environmental, technological and economic trends.

The third in a series of major visioning exercises for education

Reimagining our future together: a new social contract for education is the third in a series of UNESCO-led once-a-generation foresight and visioning exercises, conducted at key moments of historical transition.

In 1972, the Learning to Be: the world of education today and tomorrow report already warned of the risks of inequalities, and emphasized the need for the continued expansion of education, for education throughout life and for building a learning society.

This was followed by the 1996 Learning: The treasure within report that proposed an integrated vision of education around four pillars: learning to be, learning to know, learning to do, and learning to live together in a lifelong perspective.

Future proofing india's higher education system.

With approximately 1,000 universities and 40,000 colleges nationwide, India has one of the largest higher education systems in the world. However, affordable access to higher education has remained a pressing challenge for our country. In 2020, the National Statistical Organization (NSO) released a report based on an all-India survey conducted in 2017-18, revealing that only 10.6% of the Indian population aged above 15 years had successfully completed a graduate degree. This proportion fell to 5.7% in rural India and to 8.3% among women. For a long time now, digital education has been looked upon as a means to leap frog enrolment and graduation rates in the country.

Interventions in 'Digital Education' have been happening since the early 2000s

Most higher education institutes had started experimenting with imparting digital education since the early 2000s and when the pandemic hit, this trend exploded. IIM Bangalore became the first management school in India to partner with edtech provider, edX to offer massive open online courses (MOOC) to students, while Ashoka University expanded education from the four walls of a classroom to remotely reach learners aged 18 to 70+ years old.

While the pandemic necessitated a shift towards online education at a faster pace, it also clearly brought to light the need to bridge the digital divide. With a mere 4% of our population in rural areas having access to computers compared to 23% in urban areas (Source: NSO Report on Education), building India's higher education system of tomorrow needs to be complemented with infrastructure reforms, support and training by the government, collaboration between industry-academia and the like.

The A-B-C-D of future proofing India's higher education system

The A of future proofing Indian HED

A stands for alliances and partnerships. In a bid to create a multi-disciplinary education system with a focus on new age skills and vocational training, universities should increasingly see the value in becoming collaborators, rather than staying competitors. This will enable a fair and balanced growth of the sector as a whole.

The B of future proofing Indian HED

B stands for a blended learning model which simply means that we have gone above and beyond face-to-face learning to usher in an era of hybrid or multimedia formats. The classroom experience has become so much richer thanks to access to digital tools by both faculty and student. In fact, Pearson's newly launched eLibrary 2.0 solution is just such a tool that enables students to access their course books as per their convenience, from anywhere, on any device for a seamless learning experience. It is a true democratisation of education, as envisaged by the government's new National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.

The C of future proofing Indian HED

C stands for context - both in terms of the regulatory framework of the NEP 2020 and changing consumer behavior. The NEP 2020 plans to infuse India's education system with innovative content, delivery and pedagogy that will enable institutes to prepare for the future - making them more international and globally competitive. Similarly as learners seek an increasingly personalised, versatile curriculum, education providers will have to rise up to the challenge.

The D of the digital education backbone

D stands for digital, the very backbone of the future education system that will allow us to re-imagine how learning can be delivered at scale. Here it is important to reiterate that digital will never replace the traditional classroom. Much like the printed book opened up new vistas of exploration for the student when s/he was away from the teacher, digital will expand education as never before. Now, that's a future worth looking forward.

Responding to the evolving student needs coupled with rapidly changing industry demands, HEIs now have a greater onus to develop an ecosystem that will provide a high-quality educational experience.

Is the glass half empty or half full? Where do we stand today?

With technology acting as a catalyst for innovation , changing student needs, acceptance of online learning, impact of the pandemic and the release of new education policy emerge as the key drivers for the ongoing evolution of the education system.

Steadily rising cost of higher education along with emergence of new learner profiles have enabled a shift in the higher education sector in India recently, from more physical in person teaching and learning to online mediums and pedagogy.

However, this shift to digital has brought about challenges for stakeholders who are finding it difficult to adjust to the “new normal”. New methods of education delivery, preventive access to research facilities, differentiated partnership models, reduced funding and complete dependence on technology across functions are some of the key obstacles facing students, faculty and HEIs.

The pandemic accelerated this shift in higher education and acted as a test bed for Education 4.0, transforming concepts of personalized learning and integration of technology to reality. India’s new NEP, launched in 2020, could also further build and strengthen some of the more sustainable initiatives in the new paradigm.

Education system in 2040: Outcome of rapid evolution and rollout of the NEP

The pandemic and the introduction of the NEP together have reemphasized the need to integrate technology as an additional dimension in the higher education ecosystem, especially to deal with the unexpected challenges caused as a result of COVID-19.

Majority of institutes today have switched to purely online delivery in education as well as adopted digital tools and technologies across different functions, as a result of lockdowns. The reliance on digital , although on the higher side today, will continue to persist, thus changing the way traditional institutes functioned and imparted education.

The NEP encourages the online and distance learning, as well as promotes flexibility and innovation across the different aspects of the ecosystem. The Budget 2021 further details specific funding for functions which can help initiatives become sustainable in the long-run and transform the Indian higher education ecosystem.

This report highlights global best practices to identify the changes that have taken place and their role in the movement towards the future of education in 2040, across the higher education landscape.

The COVID-19 pandemic and consecutive lockdowns have affected the education system of India. Since people were stuck inside their houses for months, there was no way for kids to continue their studies. What they assumed to be holidays and were happy about, turned to be a disastrous mess. They were deprived of their knowledge so the government needed to find an alternative, and that alternative was online education.

According to UNESCO, since the outbreak of COVID-19 began, 1.37 billion students in 138 countries all around the globe have been affected by the closure of schools and universities. Nearly 60.2 million school teachers and university lecturers are no longer held in the classroom.

Since the whole country is under lockdown, e-education is the best and the only option left. University faculties are setting up accounts on online video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Skype, Google Classroom, Meet, among others to engage with students.

This new media holds out the possibility of on-demand access to the content at any given time or on any digital platform but this turns challenging for both administration and the students. Digital media today is the blend between the classical and conventional way of learning like books and notebooks and digital software like eBooks and pdfs.

The major drawbacks of Online Education

1. socioeconomic divide.

India is a diverse country and within these diversities come wide varieties of cultures and beliefs, and because of it, India suffers a huge socioeconomic divide – the division of classes like high, low, and middle and that is a major drawback. Not even one-third of the population receives online education.

In rural areas, lack of internet connectivity, less to no power supply, and inability or unaffordability to buy relevant devices are the major concerns. Many teachers had complained about the non-reachability of study materials to lower class students because they are unable to attend live sessions due to a lack of network.

As an alternative to this, many classes are done by sending prerecorded videos through WhatsApp or YouTube so they can study at their convenience but even these have their own set of difficulties like lack of understanding the lessons. As a result, they are still deprived of the knowledge they should be provided with.

2. Gender differentiation

Another drawback is the differentiation between girls and boys in our country. According to a recent survey done in the government schools of Bihar, out of 733 children, only 28% of the girls had smartphones compared to 36% of the boys. And in the majority of the cases, these smartphones belonged to male adults; often lesser accessible to girls than boys.

Half of these families couldn’t afford internet packages and their children had to rely on the lessons that were aired on televisions. But in those cases, girls were found to spend more of their time completing the household chores than boys, which often overlapped the time of telecast.

Another factor was that in most of these cases, parents denied talking to their girl child and offered to survey on their behalf. In some cases where they were able to reach the girl child, the conversations weren’t forthcoming as they had to talk in front of the male member of the family which made them understand how difficult it is for them to study with online resources.

3. Internet drawbacks

It’s a big challenge to use the internet as a source of online education. Google, Firefox, and other web browsers are good sources of information but using these platforms for online education isn’t easy. For teachers who had always worked in schools and universities, expecting them to be up to date with creating digital content and delivering it effectively online and for the children to easily adapt is completely unfair.

For them, two main factors, body language, and eye contact are difficult to perceive in an online class. Many questions arise, are students paying attention in the class? If they are, is the session understandable for them? Is their pace alright? These questions are common for traditional classes too but they are harder to address in an online session.

4. The mental health of students

It’s a mental strain on children of young age group (5-10 years old) as their period for concentrating is small and it needs physical activities to keep them engaged. But it’s not just confined to the younger generation, college-going students have complained about the same.

They seem to value the physical and practical way of learning than the virtual one. Subjects like science and technology need more practical laboratory sessions, thesis projects, and field trips to complement the theoretical aspects which are severely limited and almost impossible in online education.

5. Excessive screen time

Excessive screen time also becomes an issue to the parents whose children attend these classes. With class works, home works, assignments, everything going digital, children will be engrossed in their smartphones/laptop screens and it’s not good for their mental health. It puts a strain on their eyes and brain. With the slight ease in the pandemic guidelines and increase in online classes, the government had capped the duration to 30 minutes for preprimary students and two sessions of 45 minutes for standard one to eight.

The Good Factors

Even though online education has many bad aspects, there are many good aspects too. Due to the global pandemic, online education has fallen into the most basic level- schools and colleges. For the students who have long-distance commutes, they find it a more flexible and easier option as education is reaching them and not vice versa.

For the working groups who wish to continue their education or learn something new, online education is a good option for them. It is more flexible, can adjust to their existing schedules and they can complete the assignments without sacrificing hours from their existing jobs or important chores of their household.

Comparing to the expenses of colleges, online education is more affordable and is helpful for aspirants who wish to go to college but couldn’t. Also, they can continue earning while gaining the education they needed.

Some key benefits of online education are listed below:

Saving extra expenses- with the implementation of online education, we will be able to save the expenses of travel, lodging, and boarding and these fee reductions will mean lower fees for the online classes.
No limitation- in contrast to physical classrooms, digital classrooms don’t have limitations.
Flexibility- In physical classrooms, there’s a limitation to the local population of the students but if we talk about digital classrooms, faculties will be able to address not just the local population but also the global population. Nature friendly- by going digital, we are actually doing the earth a favor. Trees are used in the construction of paper, so if there would be less production of textbooks, the number of cutting down of trees will significantly decrease.
Time saver- traditional methods of teaching includes years of studies and months of waiting for the final examination results but with the digital implementation of the classes we are getting the content on spot, can give examinations with the ease of sitting at home, and can get the results instantly (or within few days) on our smartphones and laptops which is less stressful and saves a lot of time.

Major Challenges while incorporating online education

Incorporating online education in the general education system isn’t an easy task, with the new set of rules comes many challenges.
If we take the example of rural India, almost 30% of them are not computer literate and many don’t even know how to start a computer. Having basic computer knowledge is important if we want to provide online education in every part of the country.
Unaffordability is a big issue. For the low-class community like farmers, maids, household staffs, sweepers who have low income, affording a laptop or computer is a really difficult task.
It is a big challenge for teachers too. It’s not important that a classroom teacher can be good at teaching in online sessions.
Practical learning is not possible in online classes. Even if teachers can explain the theoretical aspects, students still need practical training to grasp what they have learned, which is most common in subjects like science and practical arts.
To conduct an online examination, India has only a limited number of resources available and moreover, the numbers of questions asked are also limited.
Conducting live sessions and streaming them for the children who belong to the rural part of India is not possible because of the poor network connectivity. Even if the rural areas are gaining knowledge about new technologies like smartphones, laptops, or tablets, and are doing everything to afford it, the lack of internet network supply is still a big issue.

New Education Policy (NEP) 2020

Recently the ministry of human resource development has been renamed the ministry of education and this education ministry has released a new education policy with a vision to reshape the education system of India. They aim to transform the education standards of India by the end of 2040.

According to this new education policy,

The existing 10 + 2 structure will be replaced by a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure, i.e. it will start from the age of 3 and will last till 18. (3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years.) This will brings early childhood education under the ambit of formal schooling. The mid-day meal program will now be extended to pre-school children.
The Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) will set up a single overarching umbrella body for entire higher education(excluding the medical and legal education).
Students will have the liberty to choose from the variety of subjects they would like to study across streams. Vocational education will be introduced in schools from Class 6 and will also include the concept of internships.
Students will also be given the choice of multiple exits within this period. The government will establish an Academic Bank of Credit for digitally storing academic credits earned from different Higher Educational Institutions so that these can be transferred and counted towards the final degree earned.
National Educational Alliance for Technology (NEAT) a regulatory body will be created to use technology for better learning outcomes. According to a learner’s requirement, NEAT aims to use artificial intelligence to make learning more personalized and customized.
The proposal to set up a national assessment center, the PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) is to keep a regular check on the education system.

Strengthening the Teaching-Learning and Results for States (STARS) project will include CERC (Contingency Emergency Response Component) will help the Government tackle the learning losses due to School closures or any such emergency that will arise in the state.

The new education policy has recommended the following initiatives.

Pilot studies for digital education.

Colleges and universities like, NITs, IGNOU, CIET, NETF will be asked for conducting researches to maximize the benefits of digital learning which will include finding the most preferred format of E-content to decrease the risk of device addiction in students.

Tools and Methods

E-learning platforms such as DIKSHA will be extended for teachers to provide a user-friendly interface. They will be updated with tools like a two-way audio and video interface that can help with conducting the classes and monitoring the progress of students.

Digital infrastructure

This will include investment in the creation of public digital and interoperable infrastructure that can be utilized by multiple platforms. It will be designed in a way that technology-based solutions do not become outdated.

Training for Teachers

Training will be given to the teachers so that they can gain the additional skill to manage the online platforms by themselves. It will focus on improving student-teacher engagement through various resources.

Virtual Labs

E-learning platforms like DIKSHA, SWAYAM will be asked to create virtual labs where students will be able to practice the theoretical knowledge. These labs will have tools for improving hands-on experiments-based learning.

Availability of Courses in Different languages

For the students of rural areas, television radios and community radios will be used to telecast prerecorded classes in their regional languages. This will make it more convenient for the students to access the study materials. Even the online content will be available for students and teachers in their medium of instruction.

Online Assessments and Examination

A framework will be designed which will be based on 21st-century technology to examine the performance of the students as per the updated standards of digital education. This framework will be designed by government bodies like School Boards, NTA, or PARAKH.

Digital repository, Content creation, and Dissemination

This will include Learning Games & Simulations, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality. The user will provide a rating system for the public to analyze the quality and effectiveness of the soft wares. Moreover, fun-based learning tools like gamification of Indian art and culture will be created with operating instructions that will be available in different languages so that everyone can understand them easily. A secured backup system will also be provided for the dissemination of e-content to students.

Standards of Online Learning

The standard of the content and technology for digital education will be set by the NETF and other appropriate bodies. These will enable the government to set guidelines for classrooms, E-learning, and methods for digital learning in India.

Blended models of learning

The traditional ways and modes of learning will not be compromised while promoting the growth of digital learning and education. Different modes of blended learning will be analyzed and the ones which the most appropriate method will only replace the traditional mode of learning.

Creating a Dedicated Unit for Digital Education

This will be established in the MHRD. It will look after the digital learning needs of both schools and colleges. It will comprise experts from the field of education, educational technology, administration, e-governance, digital pedagogy, and IT. These experts will work on delivering high-quality education to the students and resolving their queries.

Slowly and steadily, digital education is spreading and reaching out to the rural population of the country and we could see a high jump in online courses and students.

COVID-19 pandemic and consecutive lockdowns have caused a lot of disturbance in the education system of India. With the closure of schools for months and the loss in the business of school owners and trustees, people are leaning towards the digital platforms of learning. With the emergence of a new set of rules formed by the Indian government in 2020, we can say that digital ways of learning and education are going to be the new normal. But this is going to come with lots of challenges as I have mentioned.

At least 50% of the Indian population is confined in rural areas and is deprived of basic needs like electricity, water, shelter. If we want to educate that fraction of society we need to first fulfill their basic needs. Government need to take actions to provide them proper shelter and 24 hours availability of electricity, only then the new guidelines of NEP will have any effect on that sector of our society else only upper-class people will be beneficial from it and the rest of the population will still live in darkness and illiteracy.

In the upcoming future, online education is going to be a part of every person’s life and we need to be prepared for the changes. It’s not just an option anymore but a need. With the help of new technologies, the government needs to reach out to every village and provide them with the necessities of water, shelter, and education.

TS Results 2024, TSBIE Inter 1st and 2nd Year Results Live Updates: The Telangana State Board of Secondary Education (TSBIE) today April 24 declared the intermediate first and second-year results for over nine lakh students appearing the general and vocational streams 2024 board exams. In addition to the official TSBIE websites – t sbie.cgg.gov.in and results.cgg.gov.in , the indianexpress.com will also make the TS 2024 Inter 1st, 2nd Year results links available.

The overall pass percentage for the first year TSBIE exams is 60.01 per cent and 64.19 per cent in TS inter 2nd year.

To check and download the Telangana board inter result marks memo , students will have to submit their hall ticket number.

The TS Inter results were released by Burra Venkatesham, Principal Secretary of Education, and Shruthi Ojha, Secretary of TSBIE .

Over 4.5 lakh students appeared for the first-year exams this year and over five lakh students appeared TS inter 2nd year exams. Last year, the overall pass percentage in TS inter first year general stream was 62.85 per cent and in the second year, it was 67.27 per cent.
