Lesson 1: What is a Resume?

  • Introduce students to resumes as a genre of writing: professional writing. Discuss how this is different from academic genres in that it serves a different purpose and is intended for a different audience. In short, it is a type of writing by an author who is trying to get something. As a result, it is an extremely persuasive style of writing. Share examples of when a person would need a resume, such as applying for a job, a scholarship, or an award, or when creating a portfolio of one’s work.  
  • Prepare students to understand the purpose of a resume, including its F unction, F orm, and (e) F fectiveness (the 3 Fs). Take an informal poll of the class, asking who has heard of a resume before this class, who has seen one, and who has one of their own. Based on the results, you may ask students to share their experiences to add to the conversation.  
  • Function: The function of a resume is to inform the audience about you in order to accomplish something. What you’re trying to accomplish depends on what you’re trying to do. This might include getting a job, getting into college, winning a scholarship, or being selected for an internship. There are many reasons to show people your resume.  
  • Form: Resumes need to look a certain way. This is considered their form. People who read resumes expect them to include specific information, such as your name, address, contact information, education, past jobs, volunteer experience, and special skills. If a resume does not look like a traditional resume, the reader may be confused and think the writer is not educated about writing proper resumes.  
  • (e)Ffectiveness: For a resume to be effective, it must demonstrate your knowledge of both function and form. An effective resume - Has a clear purpose that shows why you are writing it - Is visually appropriate and appealing, or easy to read - Includes all the necessary information about the writer - Is grammatically correct with no errors in punctuation or spelling
  • Share copies of the resume printout. You might begin discussing these by putting students into small groups first to review. Tell them to identify what they see as the 3 Fs: Function, Form, and (e)Ffectiveness.  
  • Return together as a class, and discuss each F and how students determined what it was.

Lesson 2: Developing Content for Your Resume

  • Review the  The 3 Fs of Resume Writing from the previous lesson.  
  • Discuss the two types of resume: chronological and functional. Ask students which style they think is best for them.  
  • Show the sample resumes from the previous lesson. Ask students to identify which one is chronological and which one is functional.  
  • Share online resume reference sites such as  College Admissions High School Resume and  High School Students Need a Resume Too with the class to present additional ways of thinking about the construction of resumes. (If you are not in a computer lab or a room with Internet access, tell students to view these sites later on their own.)  
  • Have students brainstorm content for their resumes using the printout  My Resume Ideas: Getting Started as a guide.  
  • Begin completing the parts of the printout. Move around the room answering questions as students work.  
  • Ask students to complete the printout on their own before the next lesson.

Lesson 3: Defining Audience and Purpose

  • Have students take out their completed  My Resume Ideas: Getting Started printout. Put them into small groups to share their work with others.  
  • What was easy about filling this out? What was difficult?
  • What sections contained the most and least information? Why?
  • The audience refers to anyone who will review the resume, so we must consider all audiences, both primary and secondary.
  • The purpose refers to why the audience is looking at the resume and what they will be looking for, so we must ask ourselves what they want to read.

Lesson 4: Using Resume Builder

  • Take students to a computer lab with access to the Internet and  Resume Generator to complete this lesson. Have them log into the Resume Builder site. As they do so, remind them about the time limit for creating their draft in class. They should structure their time accordingly.  
  • Using their notes from the  My Resume Ideas: Getting Started printout, ask students to go through the process of entering their information. Show students the features of the tool, from the additional information about resumes on the first page to the audio feature accompanying the site that enables them to hear the information aloud.  
  • When they have completed their resumes, have students save them and also print a copy to bring to the next class.

Lesson 5: Peer Review

  • Ask students to take out the printed copies of their resumes. Discuss how resumes today can be printed and submitted to the audience, as they have prepared, but they can also be submitted electronically. In that case, the resume writer needs to understand how to save a resume as a .pdf or how to create a resume with very little formatting, with only the basic information listed and no fancy spacing or bullets used. Connect this to their use of Resume Generator , and discuss how this would be similar to or different from what they just did.  
  • Put students into small groups to peer review their resumes. Encourage students to review their peers’ resumes for the 3Fs: Function, Form, and (e)Ffectiveness.

Lesson 6: What is a Cover Letter?

  • What did you like about using Resume Builder to create your resume?  
  • What did you find particularly easy or difficult about the process?  
  • What do you like or dislike about your completed resume? d. What would you like to change about it?  
  • Function: Cover letters accompany resumes to introduce the reader of the resume to the writer. They personalize the resume, allowing the writer to provide more detail about him- or herself and any relevant experience. Many people think of cover letters as a way for the writer’s true voice to come through.  
  • Form: Like resumes, cover letters also have a typical form: that of a business letter. The writer has to know the correct placement of the heading, date, salutation, body paragraphs, closing, and signature. Readers expect a cover letter to have certain features. If they aren’t included, the reader may think the writer is not knowledgeable and, therefore, not ready for whatever he or she is trying to accomplish by submitting the cover letter and resume.  
  • Has a clear purpose that shows why you are writing it  
  • Is visually appropriate and appealing, or easy to read  
  • Includes additional relevant information about the writer  
  • Is grammatically correct with no errors in punctuation or spelling  
  • Share an online reference about cover letters, such as Sample Cover Letter for High School Students , to support the present discussion, and raise or discuss any questions as a result of it. (If you are not in a computer lab or a room with Internet access, tell students to view this site later on their own.)  
  • Show the sample cover letters written by high school students in the  Sample High School Resumes and Cover Letters printout. Discuss these with the students in relation to the 3 Fs: What is the function of the cover letter (its purpose), what is unique about its form (design), and how effective do students think this cover letter will be?

Lesson 7: Developing Your Cover Letter

  • Explain to students that they are going to create a rough outline of a cover letter that could accompany their resume. Provide the  Visualizing Your Cover Letter: Graphic Organizer printout to fill out. They may do this individually or in small groups. Move around the room responding to students’ work and offering suggestions.  
  • Once students have a good start on this, provide the more detailed  Steps to Creating a Cover Letter printout. Students should use this to create a draft of their cover letters, due at the next class. Remind students that their time in the lab during the next session will be limited, so they need to have a full draft completed.

Lesson 8: Finishing Your Cover Letter

  • Once again, have students meet in the computer lab to type their cover letters using the  Steps to Creating a Cover Letter printout and Letter Generator . You may want to remind them about their time constraints and the need to organize their time.  
  • Using Letter Generator, have students transform their drafts into finished cover letters.  
  • Make sure students save their work and also print a copy.  
  • At the end of class, ask students to submit their resumes and cover letters to you for a grade. Use the  Resume / Cover Letter Rubric to assist you in assigning a grade.
  • Have students submit first and second drafts of the resume and cover letter to you for comments or an early grade, additional revision, and a new/final grade.  
  • Do more detailed work with cover letters, including researching jobs and researching examples of cover letters for specific jobs. Then have students write cover letters tailored to these jobs.  
  • Include a discussion of writing essays and personal statements for college applications.  
  • Connect discussions of resume and cover letter writing to students’ college aspirations, including their ideas for majors, careers, courses, and activities to become involved in. You may consider reviewing online resources, including ACT .

Student Assessment / Reflections

  • Review students’ printouts for The 3 Fs of Resume Writing, My Resume Ideas: Getting Started, Visualizing Your Resume: Graphic Organizer, Visualizing Your Cover Letter: Graphic Organizer, and Steps to Creating a Cover Letter after each lesson in which they are used or collected. Make sure students are correctly identifying the parts and including information as needed. If a pattern of errors or misunderstandings occurs, review them with students at the beginning of the next lesson.  
  • Collect typed drafts of students’ resumes and cover letters as created using the Resume Generator and Letter Generator. Review and grade them using the Resume/Cover Letter Rubric. Address the grade and comments when returning the resumes and cover letters to students, especially if students are allowed to revise for a new grade.

To shortly introduce myself, I'm a hard-working and dedicated high school student with a proven track record of exceptional academic results, including a perfect GPA of 3.97 and the representation of school at various competitions and contests where I won multiple awards, such as the 1st prize in the National Economics Competition, 2nd prize in the Human Rights Competition, and 3rd prize in the International Aerobics Contest. I am a pro-active individual who likes to participate in various societies and at school, I'm part of the Aerobics Society, Fitness Society, and Tennis Club.

However, my life is not focused only on education and I deeply enjoy getting a "real-world" experience. School principal was framed using AI-generated racist rant, police say. A co-worker is now charged.

BALTIMORE -- A former high school athletic director was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly using artificial intelligence to impersonate the school principal in a recording that included  racist and antisemitic  comments about individuals at the school. 

One-time Pikesville High School employee Dazhon Darien is facing charges that include theft, stalking, disruption of school operations and retaliation against a witness.

Investigators determined he faked principal Eric Eiswert's voice and circulated the audio on social media in January. Darien's nickname, DJ, was among the names mentioned in the audio clips he allegedly faked, according to the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office.

Baltimore County detectives say Darien created the recording as retaliation against Eiswert, who had launched an investigation into the potential mishandling of school funds, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said on Thursday. 

Eiswert's voice, which police and  AI experts believe was simulated , made disparaging comments toward Black students and the surrounding Jewish community. The audio was widely circulated on social media.

Baltimore County Police said Darien was at the airport trying to get on a flight to Houston when he was arrested.  He had a firearm on him at the time, according to police. 

"Mr. Darien was stopped because of the way his declared firearm was packaged when officers looked into his background they learned he had an open arrest warrant," McCullough said.

On the audio clip, a voice that mimicked Principal Eiswert made race-based commentary, including statements that African-American students were unable to "test their way out of a paper bag," according to charging documents.  

There were also comments about Jewish individuals and two teachers who "should never have been hired at the school."  Police said the recording depicted a phony conversation between Eiswert and one of the school's assistant principals.

The clip's viral circulation on social media had significant repercussions. Eiswert was temporarily removed from the school, and waves of hate-filled messages circulated on social media, while the school received numerous phone calls.

Recording's authenticity was questioned

After a meeting, Eiswert told police he believed the audio clip was falsified using AI.  According to charging documents, Eiswert told police that he believed Darien was responsible.  He said that Darien was "technologically savvy and believed he was familiar with AI," and that there had been conversations with Darien about his contract not being renewed the following semester due to frequent work performance challenges.

Interviews with multiple administrators at Pikesville High School revealed that Darien had multiple work-related issues since he began his role as athletic director in July 2023.  Police said Darien had been reprimanded for terminating a long-standing coach at the school without approval. 

Investigators say Darien had accessed the school's network multiple times in December and January, performing online searches for OpenAI tools - which police linked to paid OpenAI accounts.  

A forensic analyst and university professor contracted by the FBI conducted an audio analysis of the file. The results determined that the recording contained traces of AI-generated content, with human editing that added background noises for realism after the fact, according to the charging documents. Another expert at the University of California, Berkley, analyzed the audio and also determined that it was manipulated. 

Response from school leadership

"As you can imagine, this has been a very difficult time for Pikesville High School community, principal Eiswert and his family, and team BCPS. We are incredibly proud of the students and staff and how they have stepped up to support one another," Baltimore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers said.  "As I said then, and it bears repeating, the statements on the recording do not reflect the core values of our system."

Rogers added that the county is taking "appropriate action" following Darien's arrest, "up to and including a recommendation for termination."

When Rich Horan took over at Audubon in 1992, the goal was daunting but clear.

“I wanted to bring Audubon baseball back,” the 1973 Audubon graduate said. “I wanted to bring it back to where it was the biggest thing in town.”

Consider that mission accomplished.

“Audubon hangs its hat on baseball, and he’s the reason why,” 1996 graduate Dan Severino said. “He’s the real deal.

“The biggest and best thing about Horan is he embodied the makeup of the town with his teams - hard working, prideful, dedicated, loyal. All things he preached everyday to us. Horan created Audubon pride.”

In his 33rd season at the helm of his alma mater, Horan’s love for the game remains as strong as it was when he played for Hank Greenberg. He can’t wait to get to the ballpark each day, making sure to instill the philosophy that executing the fundamentals is the key to success.

Horan’s teams have been highly successful throughout his tenure. The Green Wave own seven state championships, 11 sectional titles and 13 conference crowns under his watch.

On Saturday, Horan joined an elite fraternity of coaches. He became just the fifth in South Jersey history and 17th in state history to join the 600-win club. The Green Wave defeated Paulsboro, 18-0, in a Colonial Liberty matchup.

RICH HORAN’S CAREER AT A GLANCE

“It means that we’ve played an awful lot of good baseball at Audubon,” said Horan, who owns a 600-239-3 career record. “It’s all gone according to plan.

“A lot of guys that I played ball with at Audubon became Little League coaches, so I had them do the things that I wanted. We were then able to accomplish our goals because they were good at what they did. When the kids got to Audubon, they were ready to play for me.”

And play they did.

Horan’s first five teams helped set the standard, winning 20-plus games each season. Audubon reached the Group 1 state final in his second year and then went on to claim three consecutive state championships - two in Group 1 and a Group 2 crown in 1996.

“He’s the coach you want in the fox hole with you,” said Vaughn Schill, a 1996 grad who was taken in the ninth round of the MLB Draft by the Marlins that year. “He expected the most out of you in terms of effort daily and made it easy to want to go run through a wall for him.

“In today’s world, it feels like they don’t make them like Coach Horan anymore. You would do anything for him because it was so easy to play hard for him at all times; it was easy to want to dig in and give your all.

“He was driven to win, driven to succeed. He wanted us to want that. It wasn’t for wins in his column, it was for the wins in our column.”

In reaching the milestone, Horan joins Sam Tropiano (Bishop Eustace, St. Augustine), Rich Bender (Delran), Lee Ware (Woodstown) and Russ Spicer (Haddonfield, Moorestown, Paulsboro, Cinnaminson) as the only South Jersey coaches to win 600 career games.

“I’m a big Richie Horan fan. His kids play the game the right way,” said Tropiano, the region’s winningest coach and current coach at Bishop Eustace. “They sprint on and off the field, they respect the game, they hustle. It’s my privilege to go over there every year to play in the Ralph Shaw tournament. I’m so thrilled with him reaching that milestone.”

Horan has dedicated his life to baseball, and there’s no doubt Audubon is a baseball town thanks to him.

“I wanted the focal point in town to be baseball. If you saw someone wearing a t-shirt, I wanted it to say Audubon baseball,” he said. “I wanted everyone to know what Audubon baseball was all about.

“Sometimes as great as this town is with baseball, if we won 14, 15 games they would want to know what was wrong. That’s what drove me. Baseball is what I loved doing, what I still love doing.

“I’ve never thought about giving it up.”

Emotional day as students return to Bowie HS to retrieve belongings after fatal shooting

Although no classes were held at Bowie High School Friday, students were on campus to retrieve items left behind or to speak with counselors after the deadly shooting on campus Wednesday .

One parent said it was tough for her son to return.

“Seeing his face and body language change as we pulled up let me know it’s more than just a couple days off school that he is going to need,” parent Jataeja Bowers said.

As of Friday Arlington police still have not recovered the weapon used to shoot and kill 18-year-old Etavion Barnes.  NBC 5 has learned the ATF is assisting with the search.

Arlington police spoke at an earlier news conference about gun accessibility relating to this school shooting.

“We all have to take accountability as gun owners,” Arlington Police Lt. Courtney White said. “If you own a gun you need to be responsible for your gun and you need to lock that gun up because it could get into the hands of the wrong individual or a child.”

17-year-old Julian Howard was arrested on campus about 20 minutes after the shooting. He's being held on one count of murder and other charges.

Arlington ISD made counselors available for students Friday and said they will remain available as long as needed.

Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday.

“No I’m not ready for Monday,” Bowers said. “I’m not.”

She knows if it's tough for her as an adult to process, it will be even tougher for the students when they return.

“A bunch of emotions,” Bowers said. “Kids won’t be able to focus. I know it’s going to be a bunch of emotions going on.”

Maryland teenager accused of plotting school shooting in 129-page document

A Maryland teenager wanted to carry out two school shootings and outlined those plans in a 129-page document that a tipster flagged to authorities, officials said Thursday.

Alex Ye, 18, of Rockville, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of threats of mass violence, the Montgomery County Police Department said in a statement on Thursday.

Central to the case is the document, which was seized under a search warrant following an investigation by the FBI and police, according to the statement.

"In the document, Ye writes about committing a school shooting, and strategizes how to carry out the act. Ye also contemplates targeting an elementary school and says that he wants to be famous," police said.

In his writings, Ye allegedly explained that he wanted to attack his former elementary school because “little kids make easier targets” and also “strategized on how to access the easiest classrooms in his high school,” Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones told reporters in Gaithersburg on Friday.

“This situation highlights the critical importance of vigilance and community involvement in preventing potential tragedies,” Jones said, adding that “a potentially catastrophic event was prevented” by the brave witness and collaborative efforts by authorities.

Despite these mass shooting plans, Ye wrote that his real desire was to become a serial killer.

“Ye also wrote that he wanted to become a serial killer instead of a mass murderer because serial killers are romanticized a lot more,” Jones added.

Police have been investigating Ye since early March and only arrested him this week when they feared he might actually carry out these plans.

"It’s not our goal to make an arrest in every case of a threat," Jones said, adding that his agency has worked on 140 tips of possible school violence this academic year alone.

"But this case is different. This case is entirely different — that takes it to a different level. It was a concerned witness who brought this matter to light by reporting the suspect’s manifesto to authorities."

Investigators also found internet searches, drawings and documents "related to mass threats of violence," according to the statement.

Police added that security had been increased at schools as a result of the investigation, particularly Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, where Ye had attended in person before being sent to a string of psychiatric hospitals.

Authorities first learned of the document — which Ye called a “memoir” — after being contacted by an informant named in court records only as "Witness-One." The person spent time in a psychiatric facility with Ye, who said the memoir was a fictional account of a high school shooting.

According to court records, the memoir opens with a disclaimer that says: "This is not threat of violence, nor does it represent the author’s beliefs."

But its content was enough to alarm authorities and court records allege Ye put at least five people at Wootton High School "at a substantial risk of death or serious physical injury if the threat were carried out."

"It appears that the 'manifesto' has portions of fictional and non-fictional qualities and is based on reality with a plan of Threats of Mass Violence," officials said in court documents.

Ye allegedly wrote of wanting to shoot up his school with an AR-15, targeting the elementary school because little kids make easier targets, wanting to be famous and wanting to set the record for the most kills.

His internet searches included gun ranges “near me” and searches about school shootings including Sandy Hook and Parkland , prosecutors said. He was also in a Discord chat group with others focused on glorifying school shootings, the charging document said.

Ye was hospitalized from December 2022 for threatening to "shoot up school," and for having homicidal and suicidal ideations, according to court records. It was not immediately clear why Ye was released the next month as court records say it was determined he was still preoccupied with schools shootings, self-harm and explosives.

Ye had not attended school since the fall of 2022, a public school spokesman said, but had continued his education through a remote learning program.

A gun, belonging to Ye's father, was found locked in the family home during a police search, Jones said. But the suspect did not appear to have access to a weapon.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich told reporters on Friday that Maryland's strict gun control laws may have prevented a tragedy.

"This could well be a case where the difficulty to get guns prevented him from getting a gun when he wanted it, and possibly prevented him from acting as soon as he would have preferred to act,” Elrich said.

Still, authorities said they believed Ye was a legitimate threat.

"Even after being removed from the school, Ye said that he could do something at graduation because he lived close to the school," Jones said Friday.

The state’s request for Ye to be held without bond until trial was granted at a court hearing on Friday, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said. 

Ye’s trial is scheduled to start on June 3, 2024. He faces one misdemeanor charge of “threat of mass violence,” which carries a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.

A Rockville, Maryland high school student has been charged with a threat of mass violence after a 129-page manifesto was found detailing plans to commit a school shooting.

18-year-old Alex Ye was arrested on Wednesday after a document was found written by Ye that strategized how to plan and commit a school shooting. The plan also included a local elementary school. In a joint investigation the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) and the FBI Baltimore Field Office were notified about the document, according to a press release by the MCPD .

On April 17 Ye was taken into custody by MCPD and charged with one count of a threat of mass violence. Ye is currently being held in the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.  

Ye's bond hearing is scheduled for April 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Montgomery County District Court. A trial is expected to begin on June 3.

USA TODAY contacted Ye’s attorney for comment.

MCPD and FBI open an investigation

In a search warrant obtained by MCPD, the police department was able to find internet searches, drawings and documents that showed threats of mass violence, the press release said.

After these findings, the MCPD notified the Community Engagement Division and the Montgomery County Public Schools to heighten their securities at schools, especially Wootton High School.

Ye’s goal was to become famous, police said.

Officials unveil timeline leading up to Ye's arrest

In a new conference on April 19 Montgomery County Police Department Chief Marcus Jones detailed the events leading up to Ye's arrest:

  • March 3 : MCPD contacted the Rockville City Police Department to check the welfare of Ye. The police department received information about a threat that was made. Officers went to Ye's residence and Ye's father answered the door. The officers were denied entry into the home and were not allowed to search the residence or to interview Ye.
  • March 4: The Rockville City Police Department notified the MCPD Community Engagement Division for an intervention. It was noted that Ye had made significant statements regarding shooting up a former elementary school Ye attended and high school. Police then issued a search warrant in order to gain access to the 129-page document.
  • March 5 : A friend of Ye reported the student to police for a book he was writing. In the book, Ye detailed acts of a school shooting and stated that he wanted to be killed execution style. In the document Ye wrote that he would kill school children because, "little kids make easier targets." He also wrote that he wanted to become a serial killer instead of a mass murderer because serial killers are romanticized.
  • March 6 : Intervention officers evaluated Ye at his home and he was taken to a hospital for an emergency evaluation petition.
  • March 13 : FBI agents interviewed the Wootton High School staff.
  • March 15 : After speaking to a school psychologist, they stated that Ye would be fixated on statements about school shootings.
