Atonement for Our Sins. One of the primary reasons Jesus died for us was to atone for our sins. According to Christian belief, humanity's disobedience and sins had created a chasm between God and humans. The Bible teaches that the wages of sin is death ( Romans 6:23 ), meaning that the rightful consequence of sin is eternal separation from God.

Jesus Christ became the Passover Lamb for the Christian Church. The apostle Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 5:7, "For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.". Jesus Christ is the propitiation or atoning sacrifice for our sins ( 1 John 2:2 ). Without the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we have no forgiveness.

And in his incarnation, he identified with us to represent us before God (Heb. 5:1). In his obedient human life, as the last Adam and mediator of the new covenant, Jesus obeyed for us. In his obedient death, as the divine Son, he satisfied his own righteous demand against us as a sacrifice for our sin (Rom. 5:18-19; Phil. 2:6-11; Heb. 5:1-10).

Christ's sacrifice effected forgiveness (9:9-10, 12; 10:1, 4, 11, 18). Sin was the problem addressed in sacrifice - it demanded removal. The repetition of the older sacrifices testified to their inability to deal with sin with finality. They were inadequate. The sacrifice was not of sufficient value.

1 Jesus Offered a Perfect Sacrifice. Jesus offered to God his perfect life for us because we could not offer a perfect life of our own. We are all born perfect, because God created our inmost being (Psalm 139:13). The "spirit returns to God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:7). All God's gifts are "good and perfect" (James 1:17).

The Resurrection and Justification. For justification, a key text is Rom 4:25: Jesus "was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.". Earlier in Romans, Paul has said that Christ's death was a propitiatory sacrifice, so that God might be "just and the justifier" of believers (3:25-26).

Because Jesus, as the lamb of God, offered his life (blood) to the Father to free us completely and forever from the bondage of sin, so his blood is equally the blood of the new and everlasting covenant with the Father (see Matt 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25).

This decision led to humankind's exile from paradise and introduced sin into the world.

God sent Jesus to save us because God loves each one of us (see John 3:16-17). Jesus prayed for His followers, including us, to be protected from evil and to be one with Him and Heavenly Father (see John 17). How do we do it? Jesus gives us a specific component to love that the Christian must embrace: sacrifice. Our love is and should be sacrificial. Verse 13, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." Jesus' example of sacrificial love isn't doing the dishes even though you despise that chore.
