Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.

Who Was Mother Teresa?

Nun and missionary Mother Teresa, known in the Catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, devoted her life to caring for the sick and poor. Born in Macedonia to parents of Albanian-descent and having taught in India for 17 years, Mother Teresa experienced her "call within a call" in 1946. Her order established a hospice; centers for the blind, aged and disabled; and a leper colony.

Mother Teresa’s Family and Young Life

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the current capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The following day, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

Mother Teresa’s parents, Nikola and Dranafile Bojaxhiu, were of Albanian descent; her father was an entrepreneur who worked as a construction contractor and a trader of medicines and other goods. The Bojaxhius were a devoutly Catholic family, and Nikola was deeply involved in the local church as well as in city politics as a vocal proponent of Albanian independence.

In 1919, when Mother Teresa — then Agnes — was only eight years old, her father suddenly fell ill and died. While the cause of his death remains unknown, many have speculated that political enemies poisoned him.

In the aftermath of her father's death, Agnes became extraordinarily close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity. Although by no means wealthy, Drana Bojaxhiu extended an open invitation to the city's destitute to dine with her family. "My child, never eat a single mouthful unless you are sharing it with others," she counseled her daughter. When Agnes asked who the people eating with them were, her mother uniformly responded, "Some of them are our relations, but all of them are our people."

Education and Nunhood

Agnes attended a convent-run primary school and then a state-run secondary school. As a girl, she sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and was often asked to sing solos. The congregation made an annual pilgrimage to the Church of the Black Madonna in Letnice, and it was on one such trip at the age of 12 that she first felt a calling to religious life. Six years later, in 1928, an 18-year-old Agnes Bojaxhiu decided to become a nun and set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. It was there that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

A year later, Sister Mary Teresa traveled on to Darjeeling, India, for the novitiate period; in May 1931, she made her First Profession of Vows. Afterward, she was sent to Calcutta, where she was assigned to teach at Saint Mary's High School for Girls, a school run by the Loreto Sisters and dedicated to teaching girls from the city's poorest Bengali families. Sister Teresa learned to speak both Bengali and Hindi fluently as she taught geography and history and dedicated herself to alleviating the girls' poverty through education.

On May 24, 1937, she took her Final Profession of Vows to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. As was the custom for Loreto nuns, she took on the title of "Mother" upon making her final vows and thus became known as Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa continued to teach at Saint Mary's, and in 1944 she became the school's principal. Through her kindness, generosity and unfailing commitment to her students' education, she sought to lead them to a life of devotion to Christ. "Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you," she wrote in prayer.

'Call Within a Call'

On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa experienced a second calling, the "call within a call" that would forever transform her life. She was riding in a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat when she said Christ spoke to her and told her to abandon teaching to work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city's poorest and sickest people.

Since Mother Teresa had taken a vow of obedience, she could not leave her convent without official permission. After nearly a year and a half of lobbying, in January 1948 she finally received approval to pursue this new calling. That August, donning the blue-and-white sari that she would wear in public for the rest of her life, she left the Loreto convent and wandered out into the city. After six months of basic medical training, she voyaged for the first time into Calcutta's slums with no more specific a goal than to aid "the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for."

Missionaries of Charity

Mother Teresa quickly translated her calling into concrete actions to help the city's poor. She began an open-air school and established a home for the dying destitute in a dilapidated building she convinced the city government to donate to her cause. In October 1950, she won canonical recognition for a new congregation, the Missionaries of Charity, which she founded with only a handful of members—most of them former teachers or pupils from St. Mary's School.

As the ranks of her congregation swelled and donations poured in from around India and across the globe, the scope of Mother Teresa's charitable activities expanded exponentially. Over the course of the 1950s and 1960s, she established a leper colony, an orphanage, a nursing home, a family clinic and a string of mobile health clinics.

In 1971, Mother Teresa traveled to New York City to open her first American-based house of charity, and in the summer of 1982, she secretly went to Beirut, Lebanon, where she crossed between Christian East Beirut and Muslim West Beirut to aid children of both faiths. In 1985, Mother Teresa returned to New York and spoke at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly. While there, she also opened Gift of Love, a home to care for those infected with HIV/AIDS.

Mother Teresa’s Awards and Recognition

In February 1965, Pope Paul VI bestowed the Decree of Praise upon the Missionaries of Charity, which prompted Mother Teresa to begin expanding internationally. By the time of her death in 1997, the Missionaries of Charity numbered more than 4,000 — in addition to thousands more lay volunteers — with 610 foundations in 123 countries around the world.

The Decree of Praise was just the beginning, as Mother Teresa received various honors for her tireless and effective charity. She was awarded the Jewel of India, the highest honor bestowed on Indian civilians, as well as the now-defunct Soviet Union's Gold Medal of the Soviet Peace Committee. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work "in bringing help to suffering humanity."

Criticism of Mother Teresa

Despite this widespread praise, Mother Teresa's life and work have not gone without its controversies. In particular, she has drawn criticism for her vocal endorsement of some of the Catholic Church's more controversial doctrines, such as opposition to contraception and abortion. "I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion," Mother Teresa said in her 1979 Nobel lecture.

In 1995, she publicly advocated a "no" vote in the Irish referendum to end the country's constitutional ban on divorce and remarriage. The most scathing criticism of Mother Teresa can be found in Christopher Hitchens' book The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice , in which Hitchens argued that Mother Teresa glorified poverty for her own ends and provided a justification for the preservation of institutions and beliefs that sustained widespread poverty.

When and How Mother Teresa Died

After several years of deteriorating health, including heart, lung and kidney problems, Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87.

Mother Teresa’s Letters

In 2003, the publication of Mother Teresa’s private correspondence caused a wholesale re-evaluation of her life by revealing the crisis of faith she suffered for most of the last 50 years of her life.

In one despairing letter to a confidant, she wrote, "Where is my Faith—even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness—My God—how painful is this unknown pain—I have no Faith—I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart—& make me suffer untold agony." While such revelations are shocking considering her public image, they have also made Mother Teresa a more relatable and human figure to all those who experience doubt in their beliefs.

Mother Teresa’s Miracles and Canonization

In 2002, the Vatican recognized a miracle involving an Indian woman named Monica Besra, who said she was cured of an abdominal tumor through Mother Teresa's intercession on the one-year anniversary of her death in 1998. She was beatified (declared in heaven) as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" on October 19, 2003, by Pope John Paul II .

On December 17, 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree that recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, clearing the way for her to be canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The second miracle involved the healing of Marcilio Andrino, a Brazilian man who was diagnosed with a viral brain infection and lapsed into a coma. His wife, family and friends prayed to Mother Teresa, and when the man was brought to the operating room for emergency surgery, he woke up without pain and was cured of his symptoms, according to a statement from the Missionaries of Charity Father.

Mother Teresa was canonized as a saint on September 4, 2016, a day before the 19th anniversary of her death. Pope Francis led the canonization mass, which was held in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Tens of thousands of Catholics and pilgrims from around the world attended the canonization to celebrate the woman who had been called “the saint of the gutters” during her lifetime because of her charitable work with the poor.

“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole church,” Pope Francis said in Latin.

The Pope spoke about Mother Teresa’s life of service in the homily. ”Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded," he said. "She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created."

He also told the faithful to follow her example and practice compassion. “Mercy was the salt which gave flavor to her work, it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering,” he said, adding. "May she be your model of holiness."

Since her death, Mother Teresa has remained in the public spotlight. For her unwavering commitment to aiding those most in need, Mother Teresa stands out as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. She combined profound empathy and a fervent commitment to her cause with incredible organizational and managerial skills that allowed her to develop a vast and effective international organization of missionaries to help impoverished citizens all across the globe.

Despite the enormous scale of her charitable activities and the millions of lives she touched, to her dying day, she held only the most humble conception of her own achievements. Summing up her life in characteristically self-effacing fashion, Mother Teresa said, "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun and founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, an organization that serves the poorest of the world’s population. An ethnic Albanian, born in what is now Macedonia, she lived and worked in India for nearly seven decades and became a citizen of that country. Her dedication to helping the poorest and sickest communities in Kolkata (then Calcutta) earned Mother Teresa widespread fame and numerous honors, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

Childhood and Move to India

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in what is now Skopje, North Macedonia; at the time it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Her family was of Albanian descent; her father, a reasonably successful merchant, died when she was just eight years old. After his death, the family struggled financially, but her mother instilled in young Agnes the importance of leading a Christian life and serving the less fortunate.

At the age of 12, Agnes first felt a calling to become a nun and devote her life to God. She left home at the age of 18 and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish Catholic order with missions in India. She received training near Dublin, where she began learning English, before traveling to Kolkata (then known as Calcutta), India in late 1928. She took her first vows as a nun in May 1931, and received a new name: Teresa, after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. In 1937, when she took her final vows, she became known as Mother Teresa.

'Call Within a Call'

From 1931 to 1948, Mother Teresa taught geography, history and catechism at St. Mary’s High School in Kolkata. She learned Bengali and Hindi, and eventually became the school’s principal. She also regularly visited the city’s slums and saw how suffering increased there during the devastating famine in 1943, which killed hundreds of thousands of people in India’s Bengal province.

In September 1946, Mother Teresa experienced what she described as a “call within a call” while riding on a train within India. In response, she sought and received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and live and work in the slums among the city’s sickest and poorest residents. With this move, Mother Teresa began wearing what would become her trademark garb: a white sari with a blue border, later adopted as the habit for the other nuns who worked alongside her.

The Order of the Missionaries of Charity 

In 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to found her own order, the Missionaries of Charity. The order’s purpose was to help the poor while living among them, sharing their experience and treating them with kindness, compassion and empathy, but never pity. Mother Teresa and those who joined her order built various facilities as an open-air school, housing for orphan children, nursing homes for lepers and hospices for terminally ill patients.

Mother Teresa’s order expanded over the years to serve communities outside Kolkata, and in 1965, received permission from Pope Paul VI to expand internationally. It opened its first center in the United States in 1971 in New York City, and would eventually reach around 90 countries.

As her work earned her international renown, Mother Teresa was awarded honors including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). In 1975, she was featured on the cover of TIME magazine and called one of the world’s “living saints.”

Nobel Peace Prize and Criticism

In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for what the prize committee cited as her “work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress in the world, which also constitute a threat to peace.” By that time, the Missionaries of Charity included more than 1,800 nuns and 120,000 lay workers, working in more than 80 centers in India and more than 100 other centers internationally. The following year, the Indian government awarded Mother Teresa the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor.

Despite her numerous honors and widespread fame and admiration, Mother Teresa became a target of criticism as well. She held hard-line conservative views against divorce, contraception and abortion , as well as highly traditional views about the role of women in society. Some critics cast doubt on the level of hygiene and care at some of her order’s facilities; others accused her of trying to convert the people she served to Christianity.

Declining Health, Death and Sainthood 

After suffering a heart attack in 1989, Mother Teresa attempted to resign as head of the Missionaries of Charity but was returned to that office by a nearly unanimous vote; hers was the only dissent. In 1997, her worsening health forced her permanent retirement, and the order chose an Indian-born nun, Sister Nirmala, to replace her. Mother Teresa suffered cardiac arrest and died on September 5, 1997, in Kolkata, just days after her 87th birthday.

As the world mourned Mother Teresa’s death, Pope John Paul II issued a special dispensation to speed the process of her canonization, or becoming a saint. In 2003, he beatified Mother Teresa after an Indian woman attributed her recovery from stomach cancer to Mother Teresa’s intercession, which the Vatican recognized as a miracle.

Twelve years later, the Holy See recognized a second miracle, after a Brazilian man recovered from a life-threatening brain infection after his family prayed to Mother Teresa. In September 2016, Pope Francis I officially declared Mother Teresa a saint 19 years after her death—a markedly fast pace for modern times.

“She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created,” the Pope said in the canonization ceremony, held in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City .

Death of Mother Teresa and Memorial

If every individual has made their responsibility and capability clear, then the task of making the world a better place for everyone would not seem to be impossible. The purpose of this essay is to consider the life and contribution of the most inspiring women of all times, Mother Teresa.

Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, was born in today’s capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, in August 1910. However, the date of birth of Mother Teresa is still an issue of a robust discussion. Her parents were of Albanian descent, even though, back in 1910, an Albanian state did not exist yet. It was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912 when the Republic of Albania declared its independence. Although Mother Teresa was Albanian, she had not visited Albania until 1989 (Endresen 53). The reason for this was Albanian officials who refused to issue her a visa. Once the Communist regime fell, the problem solved itself. In her early years, Mother Teresa understood that her mission was to spread the love of Jesus Christ. When she was eighteen, she decided to join a Catholic congregation called “the Sisters of Loreto,” which sent missions to India. Having taken a mandatory training in Dublin, Mother Teresa went to India where she finally made her vows as a nun.

In Calcutta, Mother Teresa was teaching at the school from 1931 to 1948. During these years, she noticed that outside the walls of the convent, ordinary poor people were suffering a lot. This observation was an incentive that made Mother Teresa ask for permission from her congregation to devote herself to helping most marginalized people in Calcutta. First, she started an open-air school, but soon other people, who cared about vulnerable residents of Calcutta, joined her. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded her order called The Missionaries of Charity . Fifteen years after, the congregation received a decree of the Pope, which made the work of the order possible in other countries of the world. Overall, she was a well-respected person who committed herself to help less privileged people. She received such awards as the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian endeavors and contribution (Endresen 53).

Mother Teresa turned her entire life into a commitment to serve people and ease the sufferings of the most vulnerable ones. She saw the inequalities, but, compared to most people, she started to make her contribution to improving the lives of people living in misery all around the world. She is one of the few examples of human beings who sacrificed their lives for the common good. Mother Teresa was a person with a clear vision of how society should look like and what kind of experiences all people should be able to have. Her understanding of existing injustices was deep, profound, and non-hypocritical. From the early beginning of her independent activity, she made it clear for all the people working with her, that the conditions of living should be the same for both helpers and people in need of help.

Her vision was also clear in terms of differences between the societies in developed countries and developing ones. Mother Teresa was well aware of what problems were wide-spread in certain communities, so she kept her mind open to new issues and challenges. Her Charity was asked to come to help people in various corners of the world, so it can be argued with certainty that Mother Teresa was a citizen of the world, as she genuinely aspired to help people everywhere.

Due to her inspiring work, many women joined The Missionaries of Charity to serve the poorest of the poor. By the 1990s, there were established representations of the Charity in 123 countries of the world, including former Communist states such as Russia, Albania, etc. (Metaxas 112). She not only overcame the differences between wealthy societies of the Global North and South but also between two political blocks.

Mother Teresa also took up the initiatives on the issues neglected by others, even the government. For example, she opened a leaper asylum in Calcutta when there were more than 30 000 people afflicted with leprosy in Calcutta about whom nobody really cared. The government was not always on her side, so in the case of a leaper asylum, she was forced to evacuate all the patients. However, Mother Teresa wasn’t a person who would easily give up, she started a fundraising campaign, and when she accumulated enough resources, she founded a mobile leprosy clinic. Furthermore, Mother Teresa opened similar houses for people with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. She traveled to conflict-torn areas to rescue children and move them from demolished hospitals.

Mother Teresa was a good leader who skillfully conveyed her ideas to the general public all around the world. Even though she held strong beliefs in Catholicism, as she was a Catholic nun, her view overcame the borders of one religion and appealed to very different people from distant places of the Earth. Despite all the praising words about Mother Teresa, she received a lot of criticism during and after her lifetime. For example, even though the Catholic church recognized Mother Teresa as a saint, not every Catholic agreed with the decision. Some people believe that she had not done enough for the church as she didn’t try to convert people (Donohue). There is also an idea that such famous examples as Mother Teresa may discourage ordinary people from making their contribution in any form of charity (Morin et al.). However, considering Mother Teresa’s Charity from a humanitarian point of view, one can argue that human interests and life matter more than the benefits of any particular religion.

The work of mother Teresa has been inspiring for people all around the world. She is a classic example of a person who devoted her life to helping people in need. Mother Teresa contributed to the elevation of many people’s miseries daily. However, her way of life is not free of criticism, as there are many aspects in her work which could have been improved. What is clear in spite of all these ambiguities surrounding Mother Teresa’s figure is that her example will continue living on and encouraging people of the world to do better for themselves and people around them.

Short Biography of Mother Teresa

On her arrival in India, she began by working as a teacher; however, the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her, and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to look after. Mother Teresa felt that serving others was a fundamental principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ. She often mentioned the saying of Jesus,

“Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me.”

As Mother Teresa said herself:

“Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service .” – Mother Teresa

In 1952, she opened her first home for the dying, which allowed people to die with dignity. Mother Teresa often spent time with those who were dying. Some have criticised the lack of proper medical attention, and their refusal to give painkillers. Others say that it afforded many neglected people the opportunity to die knowing that someone cared.

Her work spread around the world. By 2013, there were 700 missions operating in over 130 countries. The scope of their work also expanded to include orphanages and hospices for those with terminal illnesses.

Mother Teresa never sought to convert those of another faith. Those in her hospices were given the religious rites appropriate to their faith. However, she had a very firm Catholic faith and took a strict line on abortion, the death penalty and divorce – even if her position was unpopular. Her whole life was influenced by her faith and religion, even though at times she confessed she didn’t feel the presence of God.

The Missionaries of Charity now has branches throughout the world including branches in the developed world where they work with the homeless and people affected by AIDS. In 1965, the organisation became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.

In the 1960s, the life of Mother Teresa was brought to a wider public attention by Malcolm Muggeridge who wrote a book and produced a documentary called “ Something Beautiful for God ”.

In later years, she was more active in western developed countries. She commented that though the West was materially prosperous, there was often a spiritual poverty.

When she was asked how to promote world peace, she replied,”Go home and love your family”.

Over the last two decades of her life, Mother Teresa suffered various health problems, but nothing could dissuade her from fulfilling her mission of serving the poor and needy. Until her very last illness she was active in travelling around the world to the different branches of The Missionaries of Charity. During her last few years, she met Princess Diana in the Bronx, New York. The two died within a week of each other.

Following Mother Teresa’s death, the Vatican began the process of beatification, which is the second step on the way to canonization and sainthood. Mother Teresa was formally beatified in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II . In September 2015, Pope Francis declared:

“Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded,” “She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created.”

Mother Teresa was a living saint who offered a great example and inspiration to the world.

When she was only eight years old, her father passed away. After that, all the responsibility of the family came onto her mother, Dranafile Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa was the youngest child among her siblings. She was a beautiful, hardworking girl who was fond of singing. When she was 12, she realised that she would like to dedicate her life to serving people. When she was 18, she decided to join the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. Then she went to Ireland, where she learned English. On 7th October 1950, she got permission from the Vatican to open Missionaries of Charity. The purpose of these institutes is to help people who do not have any place in society. Mother Teresa opened an ashram named Nirmal Hriday and Nirmala Shishu Bhavan. The purpose of Nirmal Hriday was to help patients and the poor who had been boycotted from society. The purpose of Nirmala Shishu Bhawan was to help orphans and homeless children. She was awarded “Padma Shri” in 1962 and the highest civilian award, “Bharat Ratna”, in 1980 by the Government of India.

Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised throughout the world. She has been recognised and awarded many prizes for her work internationally. The United States of America awarded her the Medal of Freedom in 1985. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping the poor and helpless. Mother Teresa decided to use the prize money of one lakh and ninety-two thousand US dollars to help the poor and helpless people in India. She was awarded the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 and the Nehru Prize for promoting peace and understanding in 1972. She suffered from heart and kidney problems for many years. In 1997, when her condition worsened, she resigned from the post of Chief of Missionaries of Charity. She died on 5th September 1997 in Calcutta.

She converted an old, abandoned temple into a home for the dying, where she cared for people on their deathbeds, providing for them and allowing them the opportunity to die with dignity. Mother Teresa was recognised for her work both in India as well as in other countries. She received Padma Shri, Jawaharlal Nehru Award, and the highest civilian honour of all, the Bharat Ratna by the Indian government. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. Mother Teresa was an independent personality who believed in changing the world by following the path of God. She was born on 26th August 1910 in the city of Skopje (which the largest city of North Macedonia). The real name of Mother Teresa was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa belonged to Roman Catholic. Her family called her Gonxha, that means flower bud or little bud in Albanian. She had an elder brother whose name was Lazar and an elder sister with a name- Aga. Nikola Bojaxhiu was her father, who was a successful building contractor and also a merchant who travelled Europe all around.

Dranafile Bojaxhiu was her mother who worked as a traditional Albanian housewife who spent her life just cooking, cleaning, mending, and caring for her children and spouse. Her father took care of a local church along with city politics. When the Mother Teresa was just eight years old, his father died suddenly due to serve ill. Until today, the cause of his death is uncertain, but it is believed that his death was due to poison given by the political enemies.

After the death of her father, Mother Teresa became very close to her mother. Her mother insisted her to charity and helped others through his life. Even though they were not rich at that time, her mother still sent an open invitation to the people of her area to dine with her family. Her mother also taught her children that “No one will eat a single mouthful unless they share with others.” When Mother Teresa asked her mother that who were those people who came for dining, then she replied uniformly that “Some were our relatives. However, all were our people”.

Mother Teresa first studied in a convent-run primary school and then in a state-run secondary school. She always sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and often liked to sing solos. At the age of 12, she realized deeply about religious life when she attended a congregation organized in the Black Madonna church in Lettice. When she turned 18 years old, she decided to become a nun and decided to move to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. Once she reached there, she got the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Then, Sister Mary Teresa (Mother Teresa) went to Darjeeling for the novitiate period. In the year 1931, Sister Mary Teresa made her first profession of vows. Then she called to Calcutta (Kolkata) to teach at Saint Mary’s High School for Girls. That school was run by the Loreto Sisters where only most impoverished Bengali families are invited to study. Since she was well aware of both Hindi and Bengali languages, she was assigned to teach history and geography. She explained them thoroughly; thereby, they can alleviate their poverty through education.

On 24th May 1937, Sister Mary adopted her final profession of vows to a life of chastity, obedience, and poverty. Since she was holding the tradition for Loreto nuns, she honoured with the title of ‘Mother’ once she took her final vows, hence, became called as Mother Teresa. During adopting the final profession of vows, she had been in her teaching profession at Saint Mary’s school. In the year 1944, Mother Teresa became the principal of the same school.

Through her infinite kindness and uninterrupted ambitions to her student’s education, she became able to adopt them the life of devotion to Christ. “Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you” was the famous line wrote by her. On 5th September 1997, Mother Teresa was died at the age of 87 due to diseases like lung, heart, and kidney. After her death, the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity numbered 3,914 and were established in 594 communities in 123 countries across the world.

Before mother Teresa she was a Catholic nun of Albania, she got the nationality of India and established the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For over forty-five years she ministered to the deprived, unwell, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s development. First she founded the missionary all over India and then in further countries. Following her demise she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and specified the title ‘Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’.

Awards and Achievements of Mother Teresa

By the 1970s, she was internationally renowned as a humanitarian and supporter for the underprivileged and feeble. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and further won India’s highest civilian admiration, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her humanitarian effort. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity sustained to expand, and at the time of her death it was working 610 missions in 123 countries. In 2010 on her 100th birth anniversary, she was praised around the world, and her labor admired by Indian President Pratibha Patil .

She has been eulogized by many folks, governments and institutions. However, she has also encountered various range of condemnation. These include objections by various individuals and assemblies, plus Christopher Hitchens, Michael Parenti, Aroup Chatterjee, Vishva Hindu Parishad, against the proselytizing spotlight of her work including a powerful stance against contraception and abortion, a faith in the spiritual kindness of poverty and alleged baptisms of the dying.

Early Life of Mother Teresa

She was the youngest of the family from Shkodër, Albania, born to Nikollë and Drana Bojaxhiu. Her father was into the Albanian political affairs and died in 1919 when she was just eight years old. After her father’s loss, her mother raised her as a Roman Catholic. Her mother’s foundation was probably from a village. She left her home at a tender age of 18 to connect to the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary. She never saw her mother or sister again.

On September 10, 1946, Teresa experienced what she later on illustrated as “the call within the call” while traveling by rail to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling from Calcutta for her yearly retreat. “I was to depart the convent and serve the poor while living amongst them. She initiated her missionary work with the poor in 1948, substituting her customary Loreto habit with a plain white cotton sari decorated with a blue border. Mother Teresa adopted Indian nationality, spent some months in Patna to receive fundamental health training in the Holy Family Hospital and then projected out into the slums. Originally she started a school in Motijhil (Calcutta); in a little while she started nursing to the needs of the impoverished and starving. In the commencement of 1949 she was joined in her endeavor by a group of youthful women and laid the basics to form a new spiritual community serving the “poorest among the poor”.

Death of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa experienced a heart attack in Rome in 1983, while an appointment with Pope John Paul II. After her next attack in 1989, she was given an artificial pacemaker. In 1991, after a fight with pneumonia while in Mexico, she suffered additional heart problems. She presented to quit her position as head of the Missionaries of Charity. But the nuns of the order, in an undisclosed ballot, nominated for her to continue. Mother Teresa approved to carry on her work as head of the order until she took her last breath on 5th September 1997.

Mother Teresa was a wonderful woman and a great influence on the world today. She was born in 1910 in Macedonia with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born into a family of deeply religious Catholics. Agnes felt she got the calling to work for God at the young age of fourteen. She joined the Loreto order and went to Bengal, India, to start her studies. In 1937, Agnes took her final vows to become a nun and has done much great work in the world since. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on August 27, 1910 to Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia.

Drana and Nikola were Albanian and both were very deeply religious Roman Catholics . Nikola was a popular merchant and a partner to an Italian merchant. He owned several houses and was a member of the Skopje town council. Whenever Agnes’ father would return from a trip, he would always bring his children presents. Also, he promoted his daughters’ education, which was uncommon in that time period . Nikola also was involved in an underground organization that worked to gain independence for the Albanians from the Ottoman Turks, who ruled Macedonia around the time Agnes was born.

Agnes grew up around much fighting. When she was born, there were Albanian protests against the Turkish government. When she was two, she witnessed the First Balkan War. In that war, the Ottomans were defeated, but Macedonia was divided among the conquerors: Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegero, and Serbia. The city of Skopje was distributed to Serbia. Albania received its independence in 1912, but Nikola continued his nationalist work. He joined a movement determined to incorporate Serbia into the Albanian nation. In 1914, when Agnes was only four years old, World War I began . In 1918, her father was killed.

Some people believe that he was poisoned by enemies. Many people mourned his death because of his kindness and generosity. Drana Bojaxhiu and the family were left with little money and no means of income. Drana worked hard to provide for her family. To get enough money, she became a dressmaker. Even though she had to work extra hard to make ends meet, Drana still found time and money to give to the lonely. When Agnes was young, she used to go on trips with her mother to visit the elderly, sick, and the poor. It is said that their mother’s generosity may have had the greatest influence on Agnes, her sister, and her brother.

Agnes was the youngest of the three children. Her older brother was named Lazar and her older sister was Aga. Aga was five years older than Agnes. Agnes loved reading books, saying prayers, and thinking. She also liked to sing and write poems about her faith. Agnes learned her faith from her mother. There was a sign in the front room of their house that read: In this house, no one must speak against another. Drana passed down to her children many values. She believed that the Lord’s work was reward enough in itself and that you should serve God in a practical, helpful way.

Agnes had thought about being a teacher when she was younger, but at the age of twelve, she knew she wanted to lead a religious life. When Agnes was only fourteen, she knew she wanted to be a missionary nun. At age eighteen, Agnes joined the Loreto order of nuns. In September of 1928, she left her family and everything she knew to serve God at the Loreto Abbey in Dublin Ireland. There, she learned how to speak English. In November, she went to India to teach English in an Indian school. In 1929, Agnes started her novitiate in an Abbey in Darjeeling, and abbey in the foothills of the Himalayas.

A novitiate is the time a nun spends studying, praying, and contemplating before she takes her vows. On May 24, 1931, Agnes took her first vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. She took her name after St. Therese, the patron saint of missionaries. On May 14, 1937, Teresa took her final vows, promising to serve God for the rest of her life. Teresa eventually became the principal of Loreto Entally, a school in Entally (a district of Calcutta) where she taught history and geography. Everyday, Teresa would look out of the convent to the streets of Calcutta. She longed to help the starving and dying people on the streets.

She wasn’t allowed to because the Loreto order of nuns had a rule that the nuns couldn’t leave the convent unless they were seriously ill. In August, 1946, Sister Teresa could stand it no longer. A four-day riot broke out in Calcutta between the Muslims and the Hindus. Because of this, food delivery was stopped. Sister Teresa went out to find food for her hundreds of students. In the riot, 5000 Calcuttans were killed and an additional 15000 were injured. She met some soldiers who gave her some bags of food. They warned her to stay off the streets, but she would soon experience another call from God.

On September 10, 1946, Sister Teresa experienced a call within a call on an annual retreat. She was convinced that God wanted her to reach out to the poor. She said, I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail it would have been to break the faith. In 1947, Sister Teresa was granted permission to leave the Loreto order of nuns. On August 16, 1948, Sister Teresa set out on the dirty streets of Calcutta wearing a simple cotton sari decorated with a blue border. Eventually, her organization would adopt this outfit as their habit.

Leaving the Loreto Abbey was very hard for Sister Teresa. She says that that was one of the greatest sacrifices she had ever made . The sisters at the Abbey were her only friends and companions and she was leaving them all behind. Before she went out to the slums of Calcutta, she went to Patna, a city 250 miles from Calcutta, to learn medical skills from Mother Anna Dengel. In Patna, the Medical Missionary Sisters took Sister Teresa in immediately and took her with them when they went to the houses of sick and dying people and local hospitals. Sister Teresa learned to care for people by practicing with the sisters.

In Patna, Sister Teresa learned how to deliver babies, fix broken bones, and she became aware of many common diseases and illnesses. The sisters found that she was a natural at caring for people, and within three months, Sister Teresa set out to help the poor of Calcutta. In Calcutta, she got in touch will Father Van Exem, who would help her find a place to stay. Father arranged for Sister Teresa to stay at St. Joseph’s Home, where a group of nuns called the Little Sisters of the Poor welcomed her gladly. It was hard for Sister Teresa to know where to start helping in such a large city as Calcutta.

She began by helping the Little Sisters of the Poor work with elderly people . On December 21, 1948, Sister Teresa finally set out on the streets of Calcutta to start her mission from God. She walked out into the city with a packed lunch, but nothing else . She had no money, materials, or companions. The first place Sister Teresa decided to go was the slum that she could see from outside her window while teaching in the Loreto convent called Motijhil. She decided to start a school there. On the first day, five children showed up for class. There were no desks, books, or chalkboards, but Sister Teresa still managed to teach.

She started by teaching the alphabet. Soon, the number of students was almost forty. With Sister Teresa’s help, the students learned not only about language and numbers, but also they learned about personal hygiene and cleanliness. Through her students, Sister Teresa met many families of Calcutta and also learned about the poor amount of medical care. Many of these families had no income because the man of the house had been stricken with disease. In Calcutta, thousands of people died each year because they weren’t able to get medical care. The amount of poverty in Calcutta grew, and Sister Teresa knew she had to do something more.

Since she did not have any money, Sister Teresa gave herself and all of her attention and energy to the poor. She walked around the streets each day looking for places she could help. The work would exhaust her, but each day she kept on going. Sister Teresa had such a love and a compassion for God, people, and her work that she would help even the people who nobody else would go near. She was tempted each night to go back to the easy life at Loreto, but she prayed to God for help to get through it all. In March 1949, Sister Teresa received a visitor at St. Joseph’s.

It was one of her students from Entally. She had come because she could not forget her kind and generous teacher and principle, and wanted to join Sister Teresa and work for the poor of Calcutta. Soon after, Magdalena Gomes came to Sister Teresa to help too. The three of them would go out onto the streets of Calcutta each day, not knowing what to expect. By the end of that year, eight other young girls had joined Sister Teresa to help fight against poverty. Also in 1949, Sister Teresa decided to become an Indian citizen, demonstrating her dedication to Calcutta’s poor.

On October 7, 1950, Cardinal Pietro Fumosoni-Biondi, head of the office for the Propagation of the Faith, sanctioned Sister Teresa’s order, making her Mother Teresa. The new order was called the Missionaries of Charity. It grew steadily in number, while helping the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa encouraged all of the nuns to treat all of the poor like a gift from God. She made sure that they always treated the patients with respect, warmth, and kindness. By the middle of 1953, the Missionaries of Charities moved to a new residence that was big enough to house the growing number of nuns joining.

Mother Teresa refused to have the name Reverend Mother Teresa because she would never set herself above anyone else. In 1954, Mother Teresa was given an unused building where she could help the dying of Calcutta. The old building was transformed into the Place of the Immaculate Heart. The building could hold 120 people at one time. This building was made a place where the terminally ill could go to die in dignity, instead of out on the streets. Each morning, Mother Teresa and the nuns would search the streets for dying people. The people were treated as angels and were loved and cared for until their death and ever after.

When a woman with children died, as happened often, the sisters would take care of the children. Often on their morning walks, the nuns would find abandoned babies. They also took them in and cared for them. In 1955, Mother Teresa opened up the Children’s Home of the Immaculate Heart. It was a two-story building that gave shelter to children with no place to go. The sisters helped care for malnourished and dying babies as well as relatively healthy ones. In addition to housing many dying children, the Missionaries of Charity set up a food bank for the hungry of Calcutta.

The Children’s Home of the Immaculate Heart also became a place where teen-age girls to go who had lost their families’ support and may have turned to prostitution. The girls often helped out by taking care of the children. The young teens were taught useful skills such as sewing and typing so they would be able to support themselves. Mother Teresa received much criticism for wasting money on the dead and the dying, but she still kept on with her work. Mother Teresa not only had a compassion for he poor and dying, but also for the victims of leprosy. In 1957, about 30,000 lepers lived in Calcutta.

Most of them were cast out from society and even their families. They were unable to find an employer who would hire them. Mother Teresa found yet another group of people that needed compassion, the lepers, and she was willing to give it. She was determined to find medical care for them. The Missionaries of Charity set up many clinics where people could go to get medicine, disinfectant, bandages, and other necessary supplies. The sisters opened up a rehabilitation clinic for the lepers. One of Mother Teresa’s biggest achievements for the lepers was helping establish the 35 acre Town of Peace, a rehabilitating community for them.

In the early 1960s, the Missionaries of Charity started forming groups that would travel to different parts of India. Homes were set up in Delhi, Jhansi, Agra, Patna, and other places. By 1962, there were 119 members of the Missionaries of Charity. Over 30 centers outside of Calcutta had been opened with the help of many contributions. Mother Teresa traveled to the United States in 1960 and spoke in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, she received hundreds of donations for her work. Mother Teresa also traveled to Illinois, Washington DC, and New York collecting donations and meeting many people along the way.

After Mother Teresa left the United States, she journeyed to England, Germany, and Rome. This trip gave many new ideas to Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa thought it would be a great idea to get some men involved to do the same type of work as the sisters were doing. So, on March 25, 1963, twelve men went to live at the Home of the Immaculate Heart to start studying to prepare themselves for the missionary work. These men were headed by Brother Andrew, who later took the name of General Servant, and called the Missionary Brothers of Charity. Mother Teresa was able to buy them a small home where their headquarters would be located.

The brothers went into the areas of Calcutta that were hard for the sisters to access and ran the men’s ward at the Home for the Dying. In no time at all, the brothers’ numbers grew. Soon, there were 44 houses around the world. In February of 1965, the Missionaries of Charity had been granted permission to work outside of India by the Pope because of the Second Vatican Council. This meant that Mother Teresa, with her 300 sisters, could help all the poor of the world. Their first home outside of India would be in Venezuela. In Cocorote, Mother Teresa began her work.

She was determined to help the women and children. There was a shortage of food, clothing, and medical care. Men usually took more than one wife, regardless if they could support their families or not. It was Mother Teresa’s goal to educate the women so that they could support themselves and their children. Mother Teresa and the other sisters in Cocorote fixed up an old ruined hotel that they planned to use as their headquarters. It had been previously used as a dump and was very hard to renovate. The Missionaries soon had the hotel up and running and they taught the women how to type and sew.

They also taught elementary school to the children and anyone who wanted to learn. In the 1960s and 1970s, over ten new houses were opened for the Missionaries of Charity in South America . In 1968, Mother Teresa was given a special request from the Pope. Pope Paul VI requested that Mother Teresa open a house in Rome. With virtually no hesitation, Mother Teresa brought the sisters to the poor outskirts of Rome. The people there had no electricity, heat, or running water. Mother Teresa was willing to establish a home in Rome for these poor people.

She also received an invitation to go to Tanzania in September of 1968. The buildings there were renovated for our people, the term Mother Teresa used instead of calling the people poor. Old people’s homes were established there, as well as nurseries and medical supply rooms. Abandoned children received care and the blind and sick were fed and bathed. In 1969, Mother Teresa, with help from Ann Blaikie, formed the International Association of the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa for lay people who wanted to help out in her organization. The members of this organization had no requirements.

They didn’t have to be Catholic or even religious to join. It was just people who wanted to help other people. The Co-Workers also agree to live as simply as they can, just like the Missionaries of Charity do. When sick people wanted to become part of her work, Mother Teresa started a group called the Sick and Suffering Co-Workers. By 1985, there were over 2,600 members of the Sick and Suffering Co-Workers. For all of her tremendous efforts, Mother Teresa received the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize from Pope Paul VI. In 1971 he praised her for her hard work with the poor and for her efforts to make peace.

Along with a small statue of Jesus Christ , the Pope awarded her about $67,000 to use in her works. In 1971, Mother Teresa took her work to the United States. First, she went to the Bronx in New York. There, she helped the children, the lonely, the sick, and the unwanted. Groups of sisters went into some developments to visit shut-ins, clean houses, get the groceries, and listen to the elderly people. To try to keep the children off the streets, the sisters organized a camp program with art, crafts, sports, and other activities that were free. The programs were held everyday on the school grounds of a school in the Bronx.

The Missionaries’ work in the Bronx was only a beginning to a long line of work done in the United States . In October of 1971, Mother Teresa was given the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Award by the Kennedy family. She was presented with a check for $12,000. She put the money straight into a fund for the disabled and retarded children. Mother Teresa was commended for her ability to recognize the needs of so many people and to be able to provide help with so little supplies and luxuries. Although Mother Teresa was getting old and fragile, she would not stop helping people. There was still much that needed to be done.

In 1971, Mother Teresa turned 61, but she wasn’t about to even think about retiring. In 1972, Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity ventured to Bangladesh. There was terrible devastation in Bangladesh. Food was scarce in the villages and many people were starving. Many women had been raped and were treated as outcasts and abandoned by their families. These women had no place to go, that is, until Mother Teresa arrived. The Missionaries of Charity would hide the women from men who wanted to rape them. They also set up adoptions for the unwanted babies and buried the dead and tended to the wounds of the living.

Four centers were established in Bangladesh. Because of all the work around the world, Mother Teresa was getting publicity. She didn’t like it, but if she was able to tell the world about her mission, she would do it. In 1973, Mother Teresa was given the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. In the years to follow, Mother Teresa built many more houses for the poor and needy. She also traveled around the world and spoke to many people. Mother Teresa has never turned down an invitation to work with the poor in any country. In the coarse of her mission, Mother Teresa received many awards.

Perhaps one of the most prestigious of these was the Nobel Peace Prize. On December 9, 1979, Mother Teresa was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in a glorious atmosphere of beautiful flowers and cheering people. Along with the award, she was presented with $190,000. She received the prize for her outstanding work with the poor and her overall love for people. In her acceptance speech , she stressed the need for people to love each other. Three months after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa was presented with India’s greatest award, the Bharat Ratna, or the Jewel of India.

Mother Teresa’s work in the United States grew and by 1984, she had established 19 houses to help the poor and homeless in America. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan awarded Mother Teresa with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In the following years Mother Teresa worked as hard as she ever had, despite her age. She gave talks about pro-life and worked with AIDS victims of the world. Mother Teresa would give of her whole self all the way up until 1997. Mother Teresa died of cardiac arrest on the morning of September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was buried on Saturday the 13th of September, 1997.

Many people attended her funeral to bid her farewell and to pray for her. Mother Teresa was a wonderful women. She gave everything she had to serve God and the people of the world. She will be remembered forever for her contributions to the poor and the homeless. I feel that Mother Teresa made a wondrous contribution to the world. What more can you give to the world than yourself? The answer to that question is nothing. Mother Teresa gave the most you can give to anyone or anything. She gave her love, compassion, and all of her efforts to the world. She worked for the good of all mankind.

Race and religion didn’t matter to her, she just wanted to help. I think it is amazing how much one woman can do. I think Mother Teresa is the best example of the effects one woman can have on the world. She started out by serving God in a convent and teaching children who had enough money to be sent to school. She pleaded with the Pope to let her leave her order to start a new one, and her pleas were answered. She was able to leave the order. From there, Mother Teresa touched people’s lives all around the world. She worked in the slums of Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America .

This single woman started out an order of nuns, an order of brothers, a group for lay people, houses and programs for poor and starving children, women, and men. Perhaps one of the biggest things she did was inspire so many other people to do what she was doing, to help and love other people. I believe that Mother Teresa was given a very special gift by God. She was given the gift of love. She was able to show love for all types of people, no matter the race or religion. She was only interested in helping people. Mother Teresa helped the people that nobody else would even touch.

She loved the outcasts and the people who had terrible diseases. Mother Teresa loved people so much that she gave up all of her luxuries and comforts and the world that she knew to go help the poorest of the poor. She believed that to be able to truly understand the needs of the poor, you had to live with the poor. Mother Teresa inspired so many people. Because of her efforts, many of the people who had gotten no attention before, had not even been given any help, received help. All over the world, people have been positively affected by Mother Teresa’s devotion to the poor. I would never be able to give of myself like she did.

I don’t think many people could ever say that they could do what she did. It takes a special person to be able to do that type of work, and Mother Teresa responded to God’s calling to serve the people, and has served so many people. Mother Teresa’s love and generosity still lives on today and will always live on. Even though Mother Teresa is in heaven now, her work still lives on here on Earth. All of the many foundations she started are still being run by the Missionaries of Charity, the Missionary Brothers of Charity, the Co-Workers of the Missionaries of Charity, and all of the people she has inspired.

Mother Teresa has inspired people to donate their time and money to the poor people. Even if they don’t give themselves totally as Mother Teresa did, they still want to help needy people. I feel that Mother Teresa will live on in the hearts of the people she helped as well as many other people. Mother Teresa had a tremendous effect on our world and I think she deserves much honor and praise for her work. Mother Teresa is a wonderful role-model for anyone. She has literally helped people all over the world. In a world so hateful and dishonest, a person like Mother Teresa is a rare occurrence.
