What can you do to set yourself apart in your application? Admissions officials have the answers.

Northwestern Law Admissions Q&A

We posed questions to admissions officials at Northwestern University Law School regarding the application process, what they look for in applicants and what sets their school apart. These are their responses:

1. What can applicants do to set themselves apart from their peers?

Ultimately, it comes down to the applicant's life experiences and accomplishments (academically, socially, and work-related). It is mostly about the track record. But there are some situations where noteworthy things do not necessarily jump off the pages of the application. For example, are there places you have been to, people you have met, problems you have solved, people you have helped, or challenges you have overcome that few others can claim? If so, be sure to talk about those in the essays. And because we are the only law school that tries to interview everyone who applies, the interview is an opportunity to stand out. That is where you can talk about these things and showcase your personality, motivation and maturity. Make sure that you demonstrate some knowledge of and interest in the schools that you apply to. You have to show that motivation in a job interview and the law school admissions process is no different.

2. What do you look for in the application essays? What do the essays tell you about a candidate?

The key is to focus the statement on one or two events or themes. We see the basic list of experiences on the data forms so there is no need to rehash a chronology. Instead, you should flesh out one or two items on the form or, sometimes better yet, talk about something else completely along the lines of the types of things mentioned in the previous question. In order to focus, we often tell applicants to go to the business section of their local bookstore. Typically, it will include a collection of books that provide tips for employers on how to hire and interview applicants for a job. Often in the back of those books, there will be a long list of potential questions you might want to ask job applicants, and you may find one that you wish someone would ask you­—that question that you know you can nail. Use that question to tailor your essay response. Finally, because we interview our applicants, that tends to be much more important for us than the personal statement. We usually find out so much more about our applicants in those face-to-face meetings than through their essay responses.

3. How important is the applicant's LSAT score? How do you weigh it against undergraduate GPA and work/internship experience? Which of these carry the most weight? The least?

In the law school admissions process, the academic record is always going to be important, pretty much no matter where you apply. The LSAT tends to be more important because it is a standard measure that everyone has to complete, whereas grades come from all different colleges and universities, majors and professors. As a rule of thumb, though, you want to make sure that either your LSAT score or your undergraduate grade point average is at or above the law school's published medians. In most cases, one of them needs to be working in your favor and demonstrating that you are on par academically with your potential classmates. The academic record tends to serve as the initial gate. Once you have passed through, the things that make the difference for us are a good interview and some solid work experience and/or leadership opportunities that, ideally, have provided you with a chance to manage some projects and work in teams.

4. How much does prior work/internship experience weigh into your decision making? What's the typical or expected amount of work experience from an applicant?

We are unique in this area. Although there are some exceptions, we almost exclusively try to enroll students who have some post-undergraduate full-time work experience­—ideally at least two to three years of it. Obviously it is very important to us and, for the college senior who is applying, the interview is the key place to offset this criterion by demonstrating a comparable level of maturity and fit for our community. There are many reasons that we like to see prior work experience but the main reason is that potential employers consistently tell us that they prefer it as well and that it makes a difference to them. In fact, they consistently mention that project management experience and ability is a huge plus for them; it is what makes their new employees stand out. Aside from that, we think of the law school experience as a 360-degree learning environment. Students learn from faculty, students learn from each other and, ultimately, our faculty members learn from our students. Moving to our preference for students with work experience has really enlivened our classroom discussions and it has greatly impacted our student culture, which is probably the most cooperative of any law school out there. No other law school takes the time to screen applicants so thoroughly for maturity, the ability to work in teams and strong interpersonal skills like we do through our work experience preference and interview process. Finally, through work experience, students often develop a much stronger framework for why they want to go to law school and the potential areas in which they may want to focus. The level of motivation and commitment goes up a notch.

5. What sets you apart from other schools? What can students gain from your school that they might not be able to find anywhere else?

We often are labeled as "the progressive law school." We think the main reason for that is because we are so market-focused in our approach. We spend a lot of time talking with potential employers and ask them what changes they would like to see in how law schools prepare their students and what abilities and characteristics tend to make their top associates and employees stand out. We are constantly changing and innovating as a result, and our goal is to prepare our students in a way that helps them to succeed and differentiate themselves in their post-law school careers better than any other law school. Hopefully, our recent No. 1 ranking by the National Law Journal is a reflection of this. Because of this career-centered focus, our admissions process, as well as our educational program and student culture is unique. We try to interview every applicant and we look for people with significant post-undergraduate work experience, including project management and leadership.

Our market-based focus is also a driving force behind our accelerated J.D. program, the way we infuse teamwork and group projects throughout our curriculum, and the opportunities we provide for our students to cross-train in business by taking many of Kellogg's core management classes and by offering the largest J.D.-M.B.A. program in the country and the first three-year program of its kind. Students have a wealth of experiential learning opportunities through our Bluhm Legal Clinic, which is very strong, and our international team projects course, which is entirely unique to us. Through that program, teams of students study the legal system or a human rights issue of another country and then go overseas for two weeks to conduct a field mission by interviewing attorneys, government officials and business leaders. It all culminates in a final group report and presentation. Finally, because we place so much emphasis on leadership and work experience in the admissions process, we provide our students with a lot of say in the way the school is run. We rely on their input and ideas and try to adopt them when it makes good sense strategically.

6. What do you look for in recommendation letters? How important is it that the letter's writer has worked regularly with the candidate in an office or school setting? Do you put much weight on letters from prominent public figures who may not know the applicant well?

In general, letters of recommendation tend to be the least important part of the application­—mainly because, in most cases, they are always positive and typically pretty general so they tend not to differentiate one candidate from the next. The candidate who can buck this trend, though, can use it to their advantage in two ways: get it from the person (usually a supervisor) who is most familiar with your work and ask them to talk about specific examples from their experience with you to back up any general statements that they make. The very general recommendation from a "famous" person will have little impact and we would caution against selecting them unless they know you very well. In our case, we do prefer letters from the work environment over those from previous professors.

7. Can you give a brief description of the life cycle of an application? What's the timeline applicants should expect?

We have a rolling admissions process. Generally, the timeframe from application submission to a decision is about one-and-a-half to two months.

8. Which firms/organizations recruit heavily from your school? Which ones hire the highest percentage of your graduates?

We have a national base of firms who recruit at Northwestern and students have the opportunity to pursue employment after law school in any of the major regions and legal markets throughout the United States. We also are pretty aggressive about meeting with and marketing ourselves to the top law firms throughout the country. Nearly three-fourths of our recruiters typically come from areas outside of the Midwest, and they represent nearly all of the top 100 law firms and many of the top 200. Usually about 10 percent to 15 percent of our students also pursue judicial clerkships upon graduation.

9. What are some of the most common mistakes that applicants make that hurt their chances of being accepted?

The biggest mistake is the failed law school name merge. That is another reason why we always say to beware of the generic personal statement. The personal statement that includes "that is why I really want to attend (insert wrong law school name here)," is pretty much a kiss of death and shows a lack of motivation and attention to detail. Applicants also need to approach our interviews as if they would a job interview. They should dress professionally and refrain from any inappropriate language or bad-mouthing of others or their experiences. Finally, applicants should be very careful about using humor in their essays. They should remember that many people will be reviewing their applications and their tastes in humor can vary dramatically. For some, it might work but for others it can fall on deaf ears or even be viewed as offensive.

10. Can you describe the archetypal student for your school?

We don't know if there is an archetype student since we are trying to assemble a student body that is diverse in so many ways (geographically, by work experience, ethnicity, gender, and career-related as well as social interests). In general, the ideal candidate might have the following characteristics:

­­­—Very strong academic credentials

­—At least two years of post-undergraduate work experience in a non-legal setting with demonstrated project management and team experience

­—A well-rounded set of extracurricular and community activities, including some substantial leadership

­—Strong interpersonal and communication skills as shown in the evaluative interview

­—Some international exposure through time abroad for work or for pleasure

­—Clear motivation for law school and a legal career, including some sense of the areas within the law that most interest them

­—Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in attending Northwestern Law

Graduate and Professional School Application Documents

Each application document takes time so it is important to start well in advance of your application deadlines. Many graduate schools will not consider your application until it is complete. Consult your graduate program deadlines to ensure you are on track. 

Most graduate school applications consist of the following components:

• Application form and fee
• Official transcripts from all institutions attended
• Test scores from the GRE, GMAT, or LSAT
• Letters of recommendation are an important component of your overall application. Graduate schools typically request 2-3 letters of recommendation from applicants. The best recommenders are those who know you well and can speak to your professional goals and ability to succeed in graduate work. Typically, recommenders are professors, supervisors, advisers, or TA’s.
• After identifying your recommenders, schedule a time to speak with them in person if possible. In this meeting, discuss your interest and reasons for pursing graduate school, schools and programs you’re considering, and anything you’d like them to highlight in the letter. It can be helpful to bring a copy of your resume or your personal statement for additional information about your qualifications and professional goals. Remember that letters are written on a voluntary basis. If you sense hesitancy or they say no, ask someone else.
• If you are thinking of taking time off prior to graduate school, you should still ask for your letters of recommendation prior to leaving campus, when it is easier to connect with your recommender and you are fresher in their memory. Ask for a ‘general’ letter and keep them on file for future use. Letters of recommendation can also be stored in Interfolio .

If you are visiting Chicago and would like to visit campus, please contact the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid . If you are unable to visit in person,  Virtual Tours of the Law School campus and nearby Chicago area are available to watch on our website.

Applicants to the general LLM and LLM in International Human Rights Programs must have a first degree in law (e.g., LLB) from a university outside of the United States with comparable requirements as Northwestern’s, or a JD from an ABA-accredited law school. Additional LLM eligibility guidelines by country are also available from LSAC.

Tax Program applicants must have a JD from a U.S. law school, or a first degree in law from their home country.  Current second year law students may also apply to the joint JD/LLM in Tax Program .

How do I apply?

All applications must be submitted through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) online application service. Application instructions and a link to the online application can be found on the apply page for the General LLM, LLM IHR, and LLM Tax programs. 

Can I apply to complete the program online, part-time, or start mid-year?

All of our graduate programs are residential.  We do not offer any online programs. There is no part-time, evening program, or mid-year entry for our General LLM and LLM in International Human Rights Programs.  We do offer a part-time Tax LLM program.

When are the application deadlines?

Applicants can apply through LSAC starting September 1, 2023 . Please check the chart below for application deadlines for the Fall 2021 admissions cycle:

Do you accept late applications?

Provided that the application is available on the LSAC website, you are welcome to apply after the deadline. Please know that priority for review and decisions will go to those who submitted their applications by Northwestern Law’s application timeline. Additionally, you will not have the opportunity to complete an online video interview.

English Proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS)

What is the minimum recommended score for the TOEFL or IETLS examination? Do you accept TOEFL MyBest Scores? The minimum score for the internet-based exam is 100. We do not accept MyBest Scores from the TOEFL exam. The minimum score for the IELTS exam is an overall 7.5. If your score does not meet these requirements, we still encourage you to apply. If admitted, you may be required to enroll in LEAF , our summer Legal English program.  We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores, IELTS Indicator, TOEFL ITP Plus, TOEFL Essentials or Duolingo.

Will you accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition scores? What about the IELTS Indicator? We strongly prefer applicants sit for exams at a testing center. However, we will accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition scores. Applicants submitting a TOEFL iBT Home test will be required to submit an online video interview to complete their application. We do not accept IELTS Indicator scores. 

How long are TOEFL and IELTS scores valid? Scores are valid for two years after the test date. If the score will expire after applying, but before the LLM program begins, applicants must complete an online video interview to confirm that the score still accurately reflects current language abilities

How can I request an English Language Proficiency Exam waiver? TOEFL or IELTS waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis and are generally reserved for international students who are native English speakers or students who have completed four or more years of post-secondary study at a strictly English-speaking institution. Additionally, please note that students who receive a waiver are not eligible for extra time on exams and tests, whereas students who do submit a language proficiency score do receive this service. Please contact the Admissions Office to learn more about the waiver request process, which includes participation in an online video interview as part of your application.

Northwestern encourages all General LLM and LLM-IHR applicants to conduct an interview as part of the admissions process.  Interviews are conducted entirely online and can be done at your convenience. Interviews for Tax Program applicants are invitation-only.

Our interview platform will give you the opportunity to do as many practice questions as you wish prior to beginning the official interview.  We encourage you to take advantage of the practice questions in order to get comfortable with the platform.

Can I interview before I’ve submitted my application? LLM online video interviews can only be completed after you have applied.  You will receive an email message with information about how to access the interview platform within one week of submitting your application.

I indicated that I did not intend to interview on my application, but have changed my mind. What should I do? You must write to our office at  [email protected]  and indicate that you want your application to be held until you have completed your online video interview.

Can I interview multiple times? Applicants are  not allowed  to interview more than once per cycle, unless otherwise indicated by the Admissions Office. 

What should I wear for the interview? Treat the online interview similar to a job interview, so dress professionally and upload a copy of your resume.

Scholarships are not deferred. Deferred applicants will be reconsidered for a scholarship in January of the year of matriculation.

He got a college degree while he was in prison. Next up is law school.

‘from the day after i committed that horrible act, i was focused on bettering myself,’ benard mckinley said.

Benard McKinley was convicted of murder as a teen and was set to spend his entire life behind bars. Still, he was eager to get an education.

“My objective and goal was to better myself, no matter if I had to spend the rest of my life in prison,” said McKinley, 38. “I allowed my prison cell to be my university.”

In 2001, McKinley shot and killed Abdo Serna-Ibarra, a 23-year-old man, during a fight. McKinley, then a member of a gang, was 16. The victim was on his way to play soccer at a park in Chicago when the fight broke out.

“It was the worst mistake I’ve ever made. I took an innocent person’s life over a senseless argument,” McKinley said. “I regret it with everything in my heart.”

In 2004, he was sentenced to 100 years in prison. His sentence was revised in 2019 to 39 years, and a few months later, it was cut to 25. In the time since McKinley’s conviction, courts across the country have reconsidered how they handle juvenile offenders. The Illinois appellate court determined that McKinley’s original sentencing was too harsh, as it did not take into account his age, or his commitment to rehabilitate.

But long before McKinley knew he might experience life again outside prison, he studied day and night. He visited the prison library as often as he could, reading case law to help him better understand the legal system. He found it eye-opening.

“Witnessing the various injustices within the prison, whether it was the institutional violence that incarcerated individuals had to endure, or the unjust incarceration based off the unfair legal system, my passion started to develop,” McKinley said.

He aspired to become a civil rights attorney — which he knew was likely out of reach given his sentence. But he dedicated himself nonetheless.

He got his GED and completed a paralegal program in 2011.

“Education saved my life,” McKinley said.

When he was given the chance to apply to Northwestern University’s competitive Prison Education Program — which provides a liberal arts education to incarcerated students — McKinley jumped at the opportunity. Of 400 applicants across Illinois, he was one of 40 people accepted.

“He’s extraordinary, and we could see that,” said Jennifer Lackey, the director of the cost-free program, which was founded in 2018 — the same year McKinley applied — and is funded through grants, donations and contributions.

To apply to the program, prospective students write a personal statement and complete a textual analysis, then a select group moves on to interviews. Students who are accepted transfer to the same prison, where they take a regular course load inside the facility. They follow the same curriculum as on-campus Northwestern students, and typically graduate in about four years.

“There is so much untapped potential inside of carceral spaces where we’re not providing opportunities or programming,” Lackey said.

McKinley was overjoyed he was accepted to the program.

“It was a dream that came true,” he said.

The program gave him an opportunity to feel like he had a purpose.

“It was life-changing and helped contribute to my transformation over time,” he said.

McKinley — who completed his degree at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Ill. — majored in social science and earned a 3.95 GPA. His professors, who taught classes inside the prison, took note of his academic aptitude and determination.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever in my life as a professor seen someone with a vision and just watched them take step after step after step to get to that place — so clearly, in such a focused, deliberate, tireless, unrelenting way,” said Lackey, a philosophy professor at Northwestern University.

“He was a remarkable student when I was his college professor,” said Sheila Bedi, a law professor at Northwestern. “Benard was deeply focused on his goal of becoming a lawyer and using his legal education to secure civil rights for himself and for other people who were incarcerated or who suffered other harms as a result of over-policing and mass incarceration.”

Before completing his bachelor’s degree, McKinley applied to law school and wrote the LSAT while incarcerated.

“Every educational opportunity I had, I took full advantage,” said McKinley, whose story has been covered by both local and global news organizations. “From the day after I committed that horrible act, I was focused on bettering myself because I wasn’t my worst mistake.”

He graduated from the program in November 2023, and was released from prison in December, after nearly 23 years. Based on his good behavior, McKinley was granted a work release to leave prison more than two years early.

“My family has been unlimitedly here to support me,” he said, noting that his transition from prison has been smooth.

On March 15, McKinley received his acceptance letter from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law — one of the top-ranking law programs in the country. He is the first person from the Prison Education Program to be accepted to law school.

“It was an amazing feeling,” McKinley said. While he tried to keep his composure on the outside, “I was jumping around like a little kid on the inside.”

Once he completes his legal degree, before he can take the Illinois bar exam, McKinley will need to get a “certification of good moral character and general fitness to practice law,” because he has been convicted of a felony, according to the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar .

McKinley’s plan is to become a civil rights lawyer, and he hopes to open a nonprofit legal clinic to support marginalized communities and ensure they have access to strong legal representation.

He said his goal is “to contribute and give back to the community that I hurt in the past when I was a juvenile.”

McKinley will begin law school in the fall, and in the meantime, he is working as a paralegal at Northwestern’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, run by Bedi.

"Northwestern is lucky to have a candidate like Benard who is going to contribute so much,” Bedi said. “I’m certain that he’s going to succeed as a law student, and I also am certain that the determination he has demonstrated really suggests that he is going to go on and found the clinic that he wants to run that will give back to his community.”

McKinley hopes his story inspires people to change for the better.

“Not only do I want to help at-risk youth understand their potential, but I also want to help educate those who don’t believe that people who commit horrible acts can change their lives in a positive way,” he said. “I want to help steer them in the right direction.”

President   Biden Names Forty-Eighth Round of Judicial   Nominees

The President is announcing his intent to nominate seven individuals to federal district courts—all of whom are extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and our Constitution.

This will be President Biden’s forty-eighth round of nominees for federal judicial positions, bringing the number of announced federal judicial nominees to 236.

• Judge Michelle Williams Court: Nominee for the United States District Court for the Central District of California

Judge Michelle Williams Court has been a judge on the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County since 2012, and supervising judge in the Court’s civil division since 2023. Previously, Judge Court worked as an attorney and later vice president and general counsel at Bet Tzedek Legal Services from 2002 to 2011. Minnesota state senator arrested on suspicion of burglary

MINNEAPOLIS — A state senator and former broadcast meteorologist was arrested on suspicion of burglary early Monday in the northwestern Minnesota city of Detroit Lakes, police said.

Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell, 49, of Woodbury, was being held in the Becker County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Formal charges were still pending Monday afternoon, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd said.

Mitchell did not immediately return a call left on the jail’s voicemail system for inmates. It’s not clear if she has an attorney who could comment on her behalf. The police chief said he didn’t know of one.

Mitchell was arrested while the Senate is on its Passover break. Her arrest comes at an awkward time for Senate Democrats, who hold just a one-seat majority with four weeks left in the legislative session. Her absence would make it difficult to pass any legislation that lacks bipartisan support.

Mitchell worked as a meteorologist with the U.S. military and for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio before she was elected to the Senate in 2022 from a suburban St. Paul district. She still serves as lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, commanding a weather unit, her official profile says. She worked for The Weather Channel earlier in her career, her profile says.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 4:45 a.m. from a homeowner about “an active burglary in process at her residence,” Todd said in an interview. Officers searched the home and arrested Mitchell, Todd said.

The police chief said he could provide few other details because the case was still under investigation. He said he was waiting to hear back from the county attorney’s office, and that a complaint detailing the allegations might not get filed until Tuesday.

Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the case.

Public records and an obituary posted by a Detroit Lakes funeral home show that Mitchell’s father, who died last month, and stepmother lived on the same block of the same road in Detroit Lakes as where the senator was arrested. The stepmother did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Mitchell’s arrest took Senate leaders by surprise. The Senate Democratic Caucus said in a statement that it’s “aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information.”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mark Johnson, of East Grand Forks, said he was shocked but knew very few details.

“The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” Johnson said in a statement. “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature.”
