The Ph.D. in Law degree program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at the production of a substantial body of academic research and writing under the close supervision of a three-member faculty dissertation committee. Unlike programs designed for students who wish to learn about law from the disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences or the humanities, the Ph.D. in Law is directed at students who wish to pursue advanced studies in law from the perspective of the law. This program offers emerging scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field, and it provides an alternate pathway into law teaching alongside existing routes such as fellowships, advanced degrees in cognate fields, legal practice, and clerkships.

Because our entering Ph.D. students will have already completed their J.D. degrees, the anticipated course of study toward the Ph.D. in Law degree is three academic years and two summers in residence. In their first two semesters, Ph.D. students will enroll in courses designed to help them acquire the background and research skills needed to complete a dissertation in their field of interest and to prepare them for qualifying examinations that test the depth and breadth of the literacies and skills they have acquired. During their second year, students will prepare a dissertation prospectus and begin work on a dissertation. The dissertation may take the form of either three law review articles or a book-length manuscript and will make up a portfolio of writing that will be essential for success in the job market. Ph.D. students will also gain experience in the classroom, and receive the full support of Yale Law School’s Law Teaching Program , which has had remarkable success in placing graduates in tenure-track positions at leading law schools.

Ph.D. students receive a full-tuition waiver, a health award for health insurance coverage, and a stipend to cover their year-round living expenses, as well as support for participation in national and international conferences.

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. in Law program are available starting on August 15. The deadline for submission of all materials is December 15. Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program must complete a J.D. degree at a U.S. law school before they matriculate and begin the Ph.D. program. Ph.D. Financial Support

Guaranteed funding.

The Graduate School provides a competitive package that provides Ph.D. students with financial support for at least a majority of the time they are registered and working toward their degree. This support includes four main components: a stipend, tuition coverage, fees coverage, and coverage of health insurance premiums.

Generally speaking, The Graduate School guarantees Ph.D. students five years of stipend, tuition, and fees support, plus six years of full coverage for health and dental insurance premiums.

Departments with Ph.D. programs vary in the financial support they provide beyond the guaranteed funding package. We strongly encourage prospective and current students to talk to their program’s director of graduate studies ( DGS ) to get a clear understanding of the financial support they can expect from the department as they plan their budget for their time in graduate school. We have created a  table showing who's paying for what in which year to help students plan their finances during graduate school.

Each component of the Ph.D. financial support package is explained in detail below.

Guaranteed Funding Package

The Graduate School guarantees all Ph.D. students a stipend for their first five years of study. Starting in fall 2022, all Duke Ph.D. students will receive a 12-month stipend during their first five years of study ( details on how this is handled in each Ph.D. program ).

In year 6 and beyond, stipend support is at the discretion of each Ph.D. program. Programs differ in the amount, length, and requirements of their stipend support, so check with the DGS.

The Graduate School covers the full premiums for medical and dental insurance for all Ph.D. students in their first six years of study, as long as they are on the Duke student medical insurance plan and student dental plan ( learn more about the plans ). Students are responsible for any dependent coverage premiums.

In year 7 and beyond, students are responsible for paying the premiums. The premiums could also be covered by external fellowships or departmental funding, if available (the premiums of Ph.D. students serving as research assistants are covered no matter what year they are in).

Expectation for Students

Support for Ph.D. students comes from a combination of funding from The Graduate School, the departments, and external funding sources such as governmental or private grants. Students are expected to play a part by making a good-faith effort to obtain external fellowships at some point during their funding period, and they should be encouraged to pursue such opportunities. It is important to understand that the overall graduate awards budget is dependent on a significant number of students obtaining such external support. External grants and fellowships also benefit students because they bring distinction, and competing for such awards provides opportunities to practice grant-writing skills that could serve students well in their future careers.

Types of Financial Support

A student’s support package may comprise several types of funding, including the following:

• Full or partial scholarships: Cover tuition and fee expenses.
• Fellowship stipends: Require no service. Many departments also offer endowed fellowships. Selection for these fellowships is usually made by faculty committee within the individual department.
• Training program appointments: For US citizens and permanent residents participating in federally funded training programs.
• Research assistantships: Available for graduate students whose special training and qualifications enable them to serve as assistants to individual faculty staff members in certain departments.
• Graduate assistantships: Available for full-time PhD and master’s students who perform a combination of teaching and incidental research activities, generally under the direct supervision of their assigned adviser.
• Teaching assistantships: Part-time instruction opportunities for qualified graduate students to serve as instructors, preceptors and section leaders, tutors, and graders.

Some departments use, when possible, the federal work-study program to help fund research and teaching assistantship positions. As a result, some departments may require or request that students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid so that eligibility for work study funds can be determined.

Vanderbilt Law School's Ph.D. Program in Law and Economics is unlike any other. Dual-degree students pursue a J.D. and a Ph.D. concurrently in a fully integrated curriculum that combines economic theory and methodology with the study of law. The program is designed so that students complete both degrees in just six years. Admitted students receive a full funding package , including tuition for both degrees and a competitive annual stipend, for all six years of study.

Applicants must complete separate applications to Vanderbilt Graduate School and Vanderbilt Law School. Each applicant's Law School and Graduate School applications will be considered together in a collaborative admissions process.

Program faculty guide students through an innovative law and economics curriculum in which students pursue policy-relevant research. What are PhD stipends? When you enter a PhD program, you can also get financial support in the form of tuition reduction, free tuition, and PhD stipends. That means compensation for work you’ll do, such as teaching or being a research assistant. Typically, traditional, face-to-face universities and PhD programs—as opposed to online programs from non-traditional schools—will compensate you for being a PhD student.

Do All PhD Students Get a Stipend?

Not all PhD students get stipends. However, most students in traditional programs do get stipends because these are full-time programs that require full-time attention, if not more.

It’s very difficult to keep a job of any kind and be in a full-time doctoral program. In order to have students at an institution, the institution has to make up for the income students lose by not working. PhD students are valuable labor for institutions because it costs less to pay them to teach classes and do research support than someone who has already earned a PhD .

What Is a Good Stipend for a PhD Student?

The average phd stipend.

The average annual stipend in the United States ranges between about $23,000 and $33,000 per year. You’re not going to get rich as a PhD student on one of these stipends, but you can survive.

The Highest PhD Stipend

The highest PhD stipends that most students can get are around $30,000 to $33,000. Interestingly, stipends vary by discipline. The higher stipends tend to be in disciplines where it’s harder to find doctoral students or easier to find PhD jobs.  

Education or musicology will have a stipend below $20,000 on average, and there aren’t a lot of jobs for graduates in these disciplines. However, if you were to look at something like biomedical engineering, the stipend would probably be around $33,000.

There is a factor of supply and demand that goes into stipends, and these are averages across the US. They also vary slightly by institution.

Is a PhD Stipend Enough to Live On?

When you evaluate whether a PhD stipend statement is enough to live on, first think about where you’re going to school. Would $24,000 allow you to survive on your own in New York City? It would be really difficult to find someplace to rent under $2,000 a month. If you don’t have a strong desire to eat, maybe you could get by on something like that. 

On the other hand, if you are somewhere like Little Rock, Arkansas, where rent might be $600 a month, then you have $1,400 left for other things like food. It might be possible there. Many doctoral students share apartments and have roommates to make it easier to survive financially.

Can I Work While Doing a PhD?

You may be able to work a little bit while doing a PhD, though it’s very hard to have time to do much else besides focus on your degree. Some people come from previous jobs and can continue consulting. Some faculty members run consulting businesses and employ students to do more work than the stipend has them assigned to do. Just be aware that if you start making outside work a priority, eventually your stipends will go away.

Is a PhD Stipend Taxable?

We aren’t qualified to give tax advice, but in most cases stipends are considered taxable income to the doctoral student.

How Can PhD Students Earn Money Besides Their Stipend?

There are ways doctoral students can earn money outside of their PhD student stipend . Some doctoral students tutor students on the side. It used to be you could sell textbooks back to the manufacturer, but that’s become increasingly rare now that most textbooks are going electronic.

There are other opportunities like consulting based on previous contacts or working along with other faculty members to help them in their projects. 

In many cases, there are grants that you might receive in addition to your stipend. Apply for grants such as dissertation-writing grants or grants aligned with your demographic background or area of interest. Check with your institution’s financial aid office and with professional associations for grants.

How Often Is a PhD Stipend Paid?

PhD stipends are paid based on your university’s compensation schedule. If your university pays every two weeks, you’ll be paid every two weeks. If it pays once or twice a month, you’ll be paid once or twice a month.

Do PhD Stipends Increase Each Year?

Don’t count on a PhD stipend increasing every year. Universities have vast bureaucracies, and doctoral students are usually low on the pole of influence. If you get a stipend, assume that it will stay at that level. 

Be sure to also check the maximum duration of a PhD stipend. Some institutions have limits, so be aware if the limit is less than the average time it takes someone to complete a PhD.

Final Thoughts

A PhD stipend is a great thing. It allows you to keep living, albeit barely, while digging deep into your preferred area of interest. In most cases and locations, it’s high enough to subsist but low enough that you don’t want to hang around at that level for a long time.

Many Ph.D. programs are fully funded.

Students interested in graduate research in various fields, from public health and English to computer science and engineering, have numerous options for Ph.D. programs that offer full funding. These programs typically provide waived tuition and fees and an annual stipend. Some also offer health insurance and other benefits. Gaining admittance into these small cohorts can be highly competitive, and the programs can be time-consuming . Here are 30 fully funded Ph.D. programs at U.S. colleges and universities. Keep in mind this is not a comprehensive list – there are others out there.

• Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago

Anthropology Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago can receive funding for up to eight years of study, assuming they are in good standing at the university. During that time, they will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus health insurance and a living stipend – which equated to $33,000 for the 2022-2023 school year – and can apply for external fellowships.

Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health at Harvard University (MA)

Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston offers a Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health that aims to provide students with expertise in disease prevention and treatment. This program includes tuition, a stipend and health insurance for five years as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress. International students receive the same benefits. Current research in the school's laboratories involves diseases like AIDS, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, malaria and tuberculosis.

• Ph.D. in business at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Students enrolled in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can study a range of fields like organization studies, accounting and information technology. Those pursuing a Ph.D. will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus a monthly stipend of $4,267, capped at $51,204. They will also receive medical insurance, new laptops at the beginning of their first and fourth years of study and $4,500 over five years for conference travel expenses.

Ph.D. in business at Rice University (TX)

At the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business in Texas, students enjoy full financial assistance upon admission to the Ph.D. program. Aiming to prepare students to teach in fields like accounting, finance, organizational behavior and strategic management, the program provides students with a research or teaching assistantship. Students receive a tuition waiver and a $40,000 annual stipend contingent on making satisfactory academic progress and maintaining full-time student status.

• Ph.D. in business at the University of Iowa

The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business offers Ph.D. degrees in fields such as accounting, economics, business analytics and marketing. The college says it provides full funding to "virtually all admitted students." This includes tuition and fees, a minimum nine-month stipend of about $20,000 with annual adjustments and comprehensive health insurance covered at 90%. Some departments offer funding for research presentations at major conferences, summer fellowships and paid time off for independent research.

Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Cornell University (NY)

According to Cornell University 's website, all students admitted to the chemical engineering Ph.D. program at the New York school receive a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend. This funding can come from a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship, and full stipends are granted for nine months with the likelihood of additional aid in the summer.

Chris Taggart | Columbia University

Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Columbia University (NY)

Students enrolled in Columbia University 's Ph.D. program in clinical psychology at the Teachers College in New York receive fully funded tuition and a $25,000 stipend annually for three years. The stipend also carries into a student's fourth year. These doctoral fellows "may be expected to serve" as graduate teaching or research assistants. Students typically complete the mentor-matched program, which includes a full-year internship, in five to seven years.

Ph.D. in computer science at Brown University (RI)

Brown University 's Ph.D. students in computer science have access to "full financial support while completing the degree," plus the option to take classes at nearby schools without incurring additional costs, according to the school's website. In fact, doctoral students in any program at the Rhode Island university are guaranteed five years of financial support, which includes tuition remission, a stipend, health services fees and a subsidy for health insurance.

Georgetown University |

Ph.D. in computer science at Georgetown University (DC)

Georgetown University 's Ph.D. program in computer science provides scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition at the Washington, D.C., school and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years. Once enrolled in the program, students must complete the Apprenticeship in Teaching Program and ultimately write and defend a full research dissertation in a seminar open to the public.

Ph.D. in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis

Ph.D. students in the computer science or computer engineering program at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support and health insurance. According to the university's website: "As a doctoral candidate, you will also receive a generous stipend to cover living expenses and a new, high-end Apple laptop computer. This support is guaranteed as you continue to make satisfactory progress towards your degree." Doctoral students may also qualify for one of three fellowships.

Jeff Miller | UW-Madison

• Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison

Incoming Ph.D. students at the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin—Madison are guaranteed full funding for the duration of the time that they are expected on campus, according to the university's department of counseling psychology website. Doctoral students also receive a benefits package that includes health insurance. Funding may come from financial aid, fellowships, assistantships and/or traineeships.

Emory University |

Ph.D. in economics at Emory University (GA)

Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding, according to the Georgia university's website. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student's cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.

• Ph.D. in education at New York University

New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers more than 30 degree programs. Many can be pursued on campus or online. Ph.D. degrees are offered in areas like developmental psychology, educational leadership and childhood education. Full-time NYU Steinhardt Ph.D. students are eligible for a funding package that includes an annual stipend – $32,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year – tuition coverage for required coursework and student health insurance for five years.

Ph.D. in education at Stanford University (CA)

Stanford University's Graduate School of Education allows students numerous fellowship and assistantship opportunities at the California school, along with a "five-year funding guarantee that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary, and covers the standard cost of attendance," the program website reads. At the Graduate School of Education, doctoral students can choose from a range of academic areas like curriculum studies and teacher education, and developmental and psychological sciences.

• Ph.D. in education at the University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education provides full funding to Ph.D. students as part of a fellowship and research apprenticeship package. This funding includes a living stipend, health insurance and coverage of tuition and fees for up to four years if the student maintains full-time enrollment. Some students may also qualify for additional summer funding.

• Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor

Doctoral students in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor can choose from numerous areas of specialization under umbrella categories like aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, macromolecular science and engineering, and robotics. All engineering doctoral students are guaranteed full funding, a monthly living stipend and health insurance. The exact amount can vary, according to the program's website, and funding comes from a range of sources, including graduate student instructor positions and fellowships.

• Ph.D. in English at Boston University

Annually, doctoral students studying English at Boston University receive a stipend plus full tuition, fees and basic health insurance. This funding is guaranteed for at least five years, with two of those years typically free from teaching requirements. Funding can sometimes be extended up to seven years, according to the university's website, but it's not guaranteed. Students may also apply for various prizes, fellowships and short-term research and travel grants.

• Ph.D. in English at the University of California—Los Angeles

Applicants to the Ph.D. in English program at the University of California—Los Angeles are automatically considered for various funding options. A six-year funding package includes "a minimum of two years of full fellowship, four years of summer stipend support and up to four years of teaching assistantships," according to the school website. Beyond tuition, fees and health insurance are also covered.

Ph.D. in international relations at American University (DC)

American University offers doctoral students in its international relations program who do not have external funding a renewable four-year Dean's Fellowship that is contingent on making satisfactory academic progress. The fellowship includes the cost of tuition, fees and a stipend that must be earned via a part-time role as a teaching or research assistant. Students also must "demonstrate competency in a modern foreign language" before graduating.

• Ph.D. in management at Binghamton University—SUNY

All students admitted to the interdisciplinary management Ph.D. program at the Binghamton University—SUNY School of Management in New York receive a combination of a full-tuition scholarship and a teaching or research assistantship for each academic year, up to four years. This STEM-designated business doctoral degree prepares students for careers in academia and work in the public and private sectors, and has a student-faculty ratio of 1-to-1, according to the university's website.

Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Duke University (NC)

Doctoral students at Duke University in North Carolina studying materials science and engineering generally receive full tuition, a stipend and fee support for the first five years. Students also receive up to six years of health insurance if they are on the university's student medical insurance plan. The doctoral program aims to help students publish with a faculty adviser and develop research skills, with the opportunity to present research at professional conferences.

Ph.D. in nursing at Johns Hopkins University (MD)

The School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland provides most doctoral students with three fully funded years of study. Available financial aid includes graduate assistantships, targeted fellowships and nursing-specific funding. The university aims to "advance the theoretical foundation of nursing practice and healthcare delivery" with the degree, its website reads. "By graduation, most Hopkins nurse scholars have been awarded grants that continue their research and set them well on their way to a successful career."

• Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Virginia

All students admitted to the University of Virginia 's Ph.D. in Nursing program are eligible for four years of scholarship funding to cover tuition, insurance and fees, as well as annual stipends. To receive certain aid, students must work 10 hours per week as a graduate teaching assistant. With a heavy research focus, students can expect courses in qualitative, quantitative and historical research, and will have to submit a research proposal for peer review.

Ph.D. in nursing at Yale University (CT)

At Yale University in Connecticut, the School of Nursing offers full funding to its Ph.D. students. They receive a monthly stipend for four years in addition to paid tuition and health care. The program allows students to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular area of study. Every incoming Ph.D. student gets paired with a faculty adviser "whose area of expertise and active research most closely matches with the student’s scholarly interest," according to the school's website.

University of Minnesota |

• Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program to study psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities are guaranteed full funding for five years as long as they maintain satisfactory performance and degree progress. This funding includes full-time tuition, a nine-month stipend and subsidized health insurance. Funding comes from some combination of teaching assistantships, traineeships, research assistantships and fellowships. Students in the program can specialize in areas like cognitive and brain sciences, industrial-organizational psychology and social psychology.

Matt Cashore | University of Notre Dame

Ph.D. within the Romance languages and literatures department at the University of Notre Dame (IN)

University of Notre Dame doctoral students who focus on French and Francophone studies, Iberian and Latin American studies or Italian studies are guaranteed five years of funding. Funding includes a full scholarship, including tuition and fees, plus a stipend and health insurance. Anyone who completes the Ph.D. degree requirements at the Indiana university within five years will automatically receive a one-year postdoctoral fellowship via the university's 5+1 Program. Fellows will have a teaching load limited to one course per semester.

Ph.D. in social work at Bryn Mawr College (PA)

Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College 's Ph.D. program in social work receive full tuition waivers and "substantial stipends" toward living expenses. The Pennsylvania college's website says: "Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework." The program's cohorts typically include only three or four students each year. According to the college, it awarded the first Ph.D. degree in social work in the U.S. in 1920.

Vanderbilt University |

Ph.D. in special education at Vanderbilt University (TN)

Funding is guaranteed for all admitted doctoral students enrolled in the special education Ph.D. program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. This includes full tuition, a "competitive" monthly stipend and health insurance for up to four years. Students may also be nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships. Areas of focus within the Ph.D. program include high-incidence disabilities and early childhood education.

Ph.D. in theatre and drama at Northwestern University (IL)

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. The program's students receive a five-year full-tuition scholarship plus an annual living stipend. Ph.D students enrolling at this program in fall 2022 will receive a living stipend of at least $36,960 during the 2023-2024 school year. Stipend amounts may change from year to year. Students can apply for subsidies to facilitate conference travel and summer language study.

• Ph.D. in women, gender and sexuality studies at University of Maryland

At the University of Maryland 's Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Ph.D. students without a master's degree usually have five years of guaranteed funding. Those with a master's degree usually are funded four years, with awards stemming from a mix of departmental fellowships and graduate teaching assistantships. Since the program's establishment in 1999, the department has granted 36 Ph.Ds, according to UMD's website.

Fees and finance

Tuition fees cover all elements of your tuition, registration and examination. If applicable, any additional research expenses will be specified on your formal offer of admission.

Full details of the tuition fees for each academic year can be found under the fee schedule  pages of the UCL Current Students website.

Tuition fees for subsequent years are subject to increase. You should make provision for such increases and this is implicit in accepting the offer of a place at UCL.

You must pay at least 50% of your tuition fee before or at enrolment to be fully enrolled, or provide a letter of sponsorship indicating who should be invoiced for your fee.

Tuition fees for 2024 entry

(As a guide) UCL’s tuition fees for UK students registered on graduate research programmes at UCL Laws for 2023-24 are £5,860 for full-time students, and £2,930 for part-time students.  These will likely increase for 2024-25.

UCL’s tuition fees for international students registered on graduate research programmes at UCL Laws are £24,200 for full-time students and £12,100 for part-time students for the academic year 2023-24.  These will likely increase for 2024-25.

Tuition fees for 2024-25 may increase. Further information relating to on tuition fees can be found in the fees and funding section of the UCL Current Students website .

Living costs

As well as your tuition fees, you will also need to think about how you are going to meet your living costs – accommodation, food and travel, as well as other costs associated with your studies and everyday life.

Funding and scholarships

There are a number of different scholarships available to fund your PhD. All are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and are competitive.  An application for a place on the PhD programme should precede any application for funding.

Each requires a different application process and deadline so please do read the following information carefully and adhere to the deadlines specified. No late applications will be accepted.

Scholarship opportunities

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, research potential and research area. Candidates must have an outstanding academic track record, an excellent research proposal and strong references as competition for these scholarships is high. Financial need is not an essential criterion but will be taken into account in tie-break cases, namely when there are two equally well qualified candidates on the basis of academic excellence.

A UCL Laws FRS covers the cost of tuition fees, plus a maintenance stipend per annum for full time study. The annual stipend for 2023/24 (as a guide) is £20,622. Costs are pro-rated for part-time students.

Awards are made initially for one year but will be renewed for a second year, subject to satisfactory completion of studies during your first year. They will be renewed for a third year, provided the student has been upgraded to full PhD status and continues to make satisfactory progress in the programme.

How To Apply:  

All successful applicants to the UCL Laws PhD programme are automatically considered for our prestigious Faculty Research Scholarships (FRS), awarded directly by the Faculty. There is no separate application form that needs to be completed.

To be considered for the scholarship candidates must apply for the PhD programme by 16 November 2023. Further details about applications are available here . 

Four Faculty Research Scholarships, named after distinguished legal figures associated with the Faculty, are typically available each year:

• Orme Scholarship :  Eliza Orme was the first woman to earn a law degree in England, graduating from UCL with an LLB in 1888. This followed UCL’s groundbreaking decision to become the first UK university to permit women on an equal footing to men, in 1878. While women at the time were not permitted to qualify as a barrister or solicitor, Orme made a career drafting legal documents from her office in Chancery Lane. She was also involved in the National Society for Women’s Suffrage.
• Lawrence Scholarship :  Reina Lawrence was London’s first woman councillor. After receiving her LLB from UCL in 1893, Lawrence served on the Hampstead Distress Committee, helping the unemployed, before the Qualification of Women Act 1907 opened the way for female candidates in council elections. Lawrence stood for Hampstead Borough Council and was elected for the Belsize Ward with a large majority.
• Clarke Scholarship :  Ellis Clarke graduated from UCL Laws in 1940, being called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn the following year. Clarke returned to his native Trinidad and Tobago and served as a lawyer and, following that country’s independence from Britain, in a number of government posts including Ambassador to the United States and Ambassador to the UN. Knighted in 1963, Sir Ellis was instrumental in drafting a new republican constitution for Trinidad and Tobago and following its adoption was appointed President, serving in that capacity from 1976 to 1987.
• Elias Scholarship :  Taslim Olawale Elias graduated from UCL with an LLB in 1946, being called to the bar at the Inner Temple the following year. Elias completed his LLM and PhD at UCL, becoming the first African to earn a PhD in Law from the University of London in 1949. In the run up to Nigerian independence in 1960, Elias played a key role in drafting the constitution and on its adoption was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice. In 1972 he became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and served in a number of important international roles including Chairman of the UN International Law Commission, and helping to draft the Constitutions of the Congo and the Organisation of African Unity (forerunner to the African Union). In 1976 he was appointed a judge at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, becoming its President in 1982.

The UCL Faculty of Laws offers UCL Laws Research Opportunity Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, research potential and research area. Candidates must have an outstanding academic track record and excellent research proposal. Financial need is an essential criterion for this award. It is a condition for eligibility for these scholarships that candidates qualify for ‘UK fee status’ as defined here by UCL, and are domiciled in the UK.

A UCL Laws Research Opportunity Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees, plus a maintenance stipend per annum for full time study. The annual stipend for 2023/24 (as a guide) is £20,622. Costs are pro-rated for part-time students.

Awards are made initially for one year but will be renewed for a second year, subject to satisfactory completion of studies during your first year. They will be renewed for a third year, provided the student has been upgraded to full PhD status and continues to make satisfactory progress in the programme. 

There is not a separate application form for this scholarship, and all applicants successful at interview will be given the option to provide financial information in order to be considered for the UCL Laws Research Opportunity Scholarship.

To be considered for the scholarship candidates must apply for the PhD programme by 16 November 2023. Further details about applications are available here .

The UCL Faculty of Laws offers UCL Laws BAME Research Opportunity Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, research potential and research area. Candidates must have an outstanding academic track record and excellent research proposal.  Financial need is an essential criterion for the scholarship. It is a condition for eligibility for these scholarships that candidates qualify for ‘UK fee status’ as defined here by UCL and are domiciled in the UK. The scholarship is only available to ethnic groups currently underrepresented as academic staff members in Law Schools at Russell Group Universities. The Faculty will make an assessment of which groups are currently underrepresented using the latest HESA and National Census data.  A UCL Laws Research Opportunity Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees, plus a maintenance stipend per annum for full time study. The annual stipend for 2023/24 (as a guide) is £20,622. Costs are calculated pro rata for part-time students. Awards are made initially for one year but will be renewed for a second year, subject to satisfactory completion of studies during your first year. They will be renewed for a third year, provided the student has been upgraded to full PhD status and continues to make satisfactory progress in the programme.

There is not a separate application form for this scholarship, and all applicants successful at interview will be given the option to provide the personal information required in order to be considered for the UCL Laws BAME Research Opportunity Scholarship.

The UCL Laws Institute of Brand and Innovation Law is offering a scholarship in 2024/25. The scholarship will fund one PhD student to undertake research in the field of Intellectual Property, and will provide a stipend of at least £20,622 per year for 3 years. Fees at the Home rate are covered (the scholarship is open to international students as well; if successful, an international student would receive a discount on the international fees equivalent to the value of the Home fees, and would need to cover the difference with their own funds).

All successful applicants to the UCL Laws PhD programme are automatically considered for the Joseph Hume Scholarship, awarded directly by the Faculty. There is no separate application form.

UCL Research Excellence Scholarships (RES) aim to attract high-quality students to undertake postgraduate research at UCL. The university usually awards approximately 40 UCL RES annually to prospective and current UCL research students from any country.  These are highly competitive scholarships and are awarded only to the most outstanding potential and existing research students from all UCL departments and faculties.

The scholarships consist of tuition fees (for home or overseas students) plus a maintenance stipend of at least £20,622 for full-time study (benefits are calculated 'pro rata' for part-time students). The scholarship also includes additional support for research costs of up to £1,200 per year for the stated duration of the programme. Awards are normally tenable for years 1, 2, and 3 of a full-time research degree programme (or years 1-5 of a part-time programme), subject to annual review and renewal.

We are partnered with the AHRC-funded London Arts & Humanities Doctoral Training Partnership. These are studentships that normally cover fees and maintenance allowance (stipend). 

Candidates should be aware that the LAHP studentship competition is a twin-track process, and they will need to:

• Apply first for a place on the UCL Faculty of Laws PhD programme by 16 November 2023; and
• Apply separately and directly to LAHP to their Open Competition Studentship .

The application window for LAHP Studentships opens on 27 November 2023, and the deadline to apply is 26 January 2024.The application process for these Studentships is run entirely by LAHP.  UCL's Faculty of Laws is not involved in the process at all. If you are intending to apply for an LAHP studentship, please make note of this on your online application form when you apply for a place on the PhD programme.

Ph.D is always the preferable choice of candidates interested in pursuing a career as an academician or researcher. Doctoral Program in Law, Finance, and Economics

Fully funded.

SAFE offers funding to excellent applicants to its Doctoral Program in Law, Finance and Economics for three years with the option to extend for one additional year. Funding usually translates into a grant of 1,200€ per month in the first program year and a research assistant position in the following years. The research assistant position comes as a 50% employment contract in the second program year that is upgraded to 70% from the third year onwards. In the first year, mandatory course work will bring applicants from the field of law “up to speed” in the methods used in quantitative research in the field of studies.

SAFE offers its doctoral students the exciting and inspiring environment of an inter- and cross-disciplinary research institution dedicated to excellent research output and research-based policy advice. Methods of research in law at SAFE include law and economics, law and finance, behavioral law and economics. Topics of research at SAFE comprise, among others, capital market regulation, corporate governance, the regulation of household finance, competition, and judicial enforcement.

SAFE pursues a “pool concept” for its doctoral students: these are expected to choose a supervisor from among the SAFE professors. At the same time, they are encouraged to interact and write papers with any other SAFE researchers. This gives them the opportunity to get an impression of the research of potential supervisors before they decide for one and provides them with different perspectives and methodological approaches to law, economics, and finance while they complete their thesis.

Requirements and expectations

• Scholarship holders are expected to entirely focus on their course work during the first year ( see schedule )
• They shall pass the examinations of the economics courses they take. A research assistant contract after the first year is conditional on passing these exams.
• SAFE research assistants are expected to choose a supervisor from among the SAFE professors no later than by the first month of the second year. The choice does not exclude research projects with any other SAFE researchers.
• The candidate can choose to either write a book or a paper-based dissertation in English aiming at peer-reviewed international publication in renown law journals (actual publication is not a prerequisite for graduation, however, the doctoral committee has to certify sufficient quality for a decent chance of publication).

Did you know that as a PhD student, there is a difference between salary and PhD stipends?

This is just one of the many things you should know when deciding to do a PhD .

As the highest level of education, a Doctor of Philosophy or PhD can take anywhere from four to 12 years to complete .

Embarking on a journey towards a PhD is an intellectually rewarding pursuit, but it often comes with financial challenges.

So, how do students cope?

If you receive a salary, then you are likely an employee the school hired to carry out a job like leading a class.

Like most jobs, salaried workers get a set wage based on their hours and often have employee benefits like subsidised healthcare or compensation.

A PhD stipend is a financial support system for doctoral students to cover living expenses, tuition, and research costs during their academic journey.

There are three types of PhD stipends :

• Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs): For this, you are required to assist by delivering one or more courses over a number of years. You would also need to take on other responsibilities, such as marking student tutorials, supervising lab experiments, and providing support to undergraduates during office hours.
• Research Assistantships (RAs): In this role, you will assist a departmental professor with their research. If you are lucky, the said professor is your PhD supervisor, and their research (and the support you give) will relate to your own doctoral project.
• Stipend via Studentship: This is a non-repayable grant for doctoral students. Unlike the other two stipends, this one rarely has additional suits, but you must progress with your degree.

Have PhD stipends always been like this?

PhD stipends have a rich history that mirrors the evolution of higher education.

Our current understanding of a PhD originated in 19th-century Germany , but doctoral degrees were awarded long before this.

Over time, PhD stipends have evolved into a cornerstone of doctoral education, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the pursuit of advanced knowledge.

Fun fact: The term “stipend” itself has Latin origins, coming from “stipendium,” which refers to a soldier’s pay.

This etymology underscores the idea that stipends are a form of financial support for individuals committed to advancing knowledge, akin to soldiers committed to a cause.

Sometimes, these PhD stipends are not enough.

At the beginning of this year, The Guardian reported about how PhD students in Australia were barely earning enough to survive.

“Through Melbourne’s winter, I know people forced into less than suitable housing who weren’t turning on their heat,” said Tara-Lyn Camilleri, who lobbied to raise the stipend at Monash University from 30,000 Australian dollars to A$37,000 while completing her PhD last year.

It was eventually raised to A$33,000, about A$4,500 less than the minimum wage after tax.

As PhDs can take years to complete, it is always easier to do one when you have money saved away instead of relying entirely on the PhD stipend.

Eric Schmidt, former CEO and Chairman, Google has a PhD in electrical engineering.

Fully-funded PhD in Europe: Scholarship covers fees & stipend worth over $350,000 (₹2.5 crore)

With the rising costs of quality education, it has become difficult for candidates from middle-class families to be able to afford the fees and cost of living at the top universities.

For instance, consider doctoral degrees at the top universities and business schools. Without getting a fully funded PhD, it is impractical to cover the expenses for the long 5-year (or more) duration that it can take to complete the degree.

Pulkit Yadav started his journey in Alwar, a small town in Rajasthan. Harbouring doctoral ambitions from early days, here’s how he traversed his way to one of the best business schools in the world.  

How I got a fully-funded PhD in entrepreneurship

Born into a family of academicians, I grew up watching my parents enjoying their work and work-life balance compared to the parents of my friends.

Watching their life from up close sowed the seeds of a career in academia during my childhood itself.

After spending 2 years in Kota, I pursued my undergrads at BITS Pilani in Computer Science (class of 2017).

During my undergrads, I was exposed to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. The strong entrepreneurship culture at BITS allowed my friends to follow their passions.

Quite a few of them were interested in venture creation. I saw a few of them creating successful ventures while others who were equally talented, had the same education and similar network failing to do so.

This raised a question for me:

What is special about these people?

I tried looking for answers in entrepreneurship literature, spent a year at an incubator (thanks to the 0 attendance policy of BITS) just watching and observing successful founders versus less successful founders.

I also participated in over 3 dozen hackathons, just to understand what does it take for an entrepreneur to be successful.

Unfortunately (fortunately in the hindsight), I wasn’t able to reach close to any conclusion.

Combining my curiosity for this research question and my family background, I decided to pursue a PhD in entrepreneurship although, at that time (2016), I didn’t know that a PhD in entrepreneurship exists so I started looking for PhD in strategy.

After skimming through the profiles of people currently pursuing PhD, I realized that it’ll be IMPOSSIBLE for me to get into a decent program (forget elite).

I started looking for graduate-level courses in strategy or general management. After spending few weeks, I concluded that for me a Masters in Management degree (MiM) is the way to go.

However, I realized most of the top B-Schools were located in the U S and they didn’t have MiM courses. MiM was essentially a European concept.

My target schools were Wharton and INSEAD but none of them was offering MiM in 2017. I think at that time I subconsciously decided to target these 2 schools for my PhD.

Since I was targeting MiM, I went to the FT ranking, the gold standard for B-School rankings, and decided that I’ll target just the top 8 schools.

I did know that MiM courses are essentially professional courses so pursuing one-year programs won’t help me for PhD.

So I decided to target just the 2-year programs this criteria further ruled out LBS and the Spanish Schools. St. Gallen doesn’t take engineers.

Ultimately my shortlist came to 3 Parisian Schools (HEC, ESSEC, ESCP). I was told they are equivalent to IIM A,B,C in France.

ESSEC became my top priority for 3 reasons.

• The primary reason being the apprenticeship program, a student can graduate debt as his/her studies are financed by a firm.
• The second reason being the exchange program of ESSEC is second to none, ESSEC has Kellogg, Duke, Booth, Cornell as its exchange partners (MiM students attend classes with MBA students!).
• The third reason being the flexibility offered by ESSEC, you can work 2 days and come to school 3 days or you can take 6 months off for an internship or any of these combinations.

Ultimately, I decided to join ESSEC even though I wasn’t offered any scholarship.

I joined ESSEC in Aug 2017, the first 2 trimesters went pretty quickly as I was familiarizing myself with the core management courses and I was experimenting with all the different domains of management.

During my third trimester, I started looking for apprenticeships in the qualitative heavy field.

I was actively trying to avoid banks as I wanted to develop skills that I was lacking. And being an engineer I was pretty confident regarding my quantitative skills.

I finally started my apprenticeship as a negotiation consultant.

Meanwhile, I started meeting ESSEC professors and discussing my PhD plans so that later down the lane, I can ask them for very personalized LoRs.

I also started looking for a reliable indicator of the school’s research potential and output.

Until then, I was using FT ranking as gold standard for any B School regarding questions. After asking a few PhD students and Professors, I concluded that the best ranking for research is published by Naveen Jindal School of Business.

I spent roughly 400 hours researching everything about the top schools, their admission stats, what kind of students do they prefer and their placements.

I was shocked (not surprised though) to realize that the acceptance rate was less than 2%.

Most of the candidates were from the reputed international universities and almost everyone had around 18 months of research ex.

At this point, I realized I can not afford any slip-ups in the process. I started looking for consultants to guide me.

As usual, I researched a lot and finally zeroed down on MBA Crystal Ball (MCB) as I found Sameer Kamat very straightforward. He gave me his honest views about how he can help me.

Later, I worked with Manish Gupta (MG) from the same team for my PhD application. I found him immensely helpful as he never sugarcoated things and kept me grounded. He was always available to discuss.

I wholeheartedly recommend MBA Crystal Ball to anyone applying for MBA or PhD and looking for a good admissions consultant.

I started reading research papers to further understand the nuances of the research and to narrow down my interest in specific topics.

After a lot of trial and error, I realized I have the necessary skill-set and passion to pursue a PhD in entrepreneurship.

During fall 2019, I went to Fuqua School of Business for my exchange term. I took courses in Private Equity (PE) / Venture Capital (VC) and innovation.

This exposed me to the other side of a venture, which further strengthened my interest in entrepreneurial research.

I started looking for research opportunities as it’s almost impossible to get into a top B-School without relevant research experience.

I started contacting professors around the world, even after contacting 75+ profs, I did not get a favorable response.

At this point, I realized it’s a chicken and egg problem, to work with good professors I need good research experience and to get good research experience, I NEED to work with research-oriented professors.

Simultaneously I started GMAT preparation. I needed at least a 740, as 735 was the median GMAT for Wharton. Fortunately, I scored a 740.

I again started my cold emailing marathon. As luck would have it, one of the professors from INSEAD replied as he was already working on a topic that was very close to my research interest. He thought, with my skill-set, I’ll be a good addition to this team.

From that point, it was all a snowball effect. I worked with few other top researchers in the field.

I applied to 8 Top Schools in the US, 2 in Canada, INSEAD, LBS, HEC, and Imperial in the EU.

I was in the interview process with 6 schools when my first admit came and it was from INSEAD with a fully-funded PhD.

It covered 100% of the tuition fee – 60,000 euros per year (for first 2 years) and 5,000 Annual Dissertation Fees (from 3rd to 5th year). It also included a net stipend of 32,000 euros per year for 5 years.

That’s a total of 295,000 Euros. That’s over 350,000 US dollars, or roughly 2.5 crores in Indian Rupees!

After receiving my admit from INSEAD, which is the best school for entrepreneurship research and probably the only one with a dedicated department to it, I withdrew my applications from all other schools as the academic community is very close-knit and small.

You can’t (shouldn’t) negotiate like MBA offers, as it’s extremely risky (reputational risk).

The other reason being, I was in the same boat with other applicants and its very stressful to wait for your admit given that every good school has 1 or 2 seats available.

Now that I had already decided on my school, I wanted to clear the queue for others.  

Tips for PhD applicants

• It’s best if you can initiate the PhD application process early (I’d suggest 2-3 years before the year of application).
• Make sure you start interacting with the right professors early on.
• If you can learn programming in Python and/or R, that will make you highly attractive to professors.
• In order to show your familiarity with their work, read up on the professors’ research papers thoroughly. It’ll help you convince them that you’ve done your homework.
• Aim for a a GMAT/GRE score that puts you in the 95 percentile or higher.
• The courses you take up should show diversity and rigour. Also ensure your GPA remains high.
• See if you can get a research associate opportunity. Do that for year, at least.
• Adopt a missile strategy, and not a shotgun approach. In other words, i.e narrow down on only a handful of business schools & professors. Find out all you can about them. This is much better than spraying bullets all over the place in the hope that one of them will hit the target.
• During your application process, getting emotionally connected to any school is a bad idea. Keep all your options open.
• Find out helpful people and resources. As an example, I found Prof. Abhishek Nagaraj from Berkely Haas to be quite helpful and sympathetic towards minority candidates. He understands how tough it can be for minority candidates to get into PhD programs at the elite business schools. He shares a lot of helpful tips on his site
• Try to get impressive LoRs from well-known professors in the field you’re interested in. For business schools, PhD programs are massive cost centers. So they are looking out for the most worthy and talented applicants. That explains the super low acceptance rate of under 1% for top PhD programs. Even after filtering through the big pile of PhD applications, there are still over 50 impressive candidates (98 percentile in standardized scores, nearly perfect CGPA, great research experience, 3-4 publications, top schools) competing for just 10 seats. I think it all comes down to what the admission committee thinks about the calibre of your recommenders, their work in the field and what they say about you.
• Don’t shy away from hiring top admission consulting companies such as MBA Crystal Ball early in the process. The quality infused in my PhD SoP by the MCB consulting team was unparalleled.

Not necessarily Ashwin. But top schools look for clear evidence of research work/experience. That doesn’t have to be full-time, you can also think of doing that in parallel to a corporate job. But if you can make that switch, always helps.

Write to a Faculty member. Submit a tentative research proposal (3-4 pages) along with your cv. It will be a minimum of 1 year process. So you got to have that patience. And also you have to try different ptofessors, different universities… Most likely you will get a partial funding if things fall in place. But you have to be persistent to get a full funding. Many times you dont end up working on the research proposal that you wrote in the first place. It is mostly used to evaluate you. Good luck.

Three UNH graduate students and two alumni received prestigious Graduate Research Fellowships (GRFP) from the National Science Foundation. Awarded to students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the five-year fellowship includes three years of financial support, with an annual stipend and tuition allowance. Current student recipients are master’s students Alexis Eaton and Callyan Lacio and Ph.D. student Else Schlerman. Alumni recipients are Eli Duggan ’23, currently studying at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland; and UNH Manchester graduate Nicole Gallien ’22.

Alexis Eaton ’24 will be receiving her bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering and sustainability, and she will utilize her NSF GRFP to pursue a master’s degree at UNH in civil and environmental engineering next year. She plans to then continue her education in a Ph.D. program in environmental biochemistry or a similar field.

Eaton’s proposal centered around the presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in septic systems.

“PFAS are a group of manmade emerging contaminants that have been widely used in commercial products because of their resistance to heat, water and oil,” says Eaton. “These substances have been linked to various forms of cancer, reproductivity toxicity and poor thyroid function.”

Eaton’s research, mentored by professor of civil and environmental engineering Paula Mouser, has focused on the fate and transport of emerging contaminants. She says it is important to know where these chemicals end up in the environment, along with what types of substances they produce.

“Emerging contaminants are harmful to the environment and human health; we need to be able to determine what influences our exposure to these compounds and predict potential exposure pathways,” Eaton says.

Callyan Lacio , currently a first-year master’s student in the integrative biology program , is conducting acoustic research that monitors and studies animals' calls to estimate their population sizes and look at changes in breeding timing and behaviors. She also prioritizes integrating Indigenous knowledge and culture into her work.

Her advisor is assistant professor Laura Kloepper, who leads the Ecological Acoustics and Behavior Lab. She is also involved with the Center for Acoustics Research and Education at UNH’s Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space.

Lacio, who earned her bachelor’s degree in zoo science and conservation science at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, uses passive acoustic monitoring, a technique Lacio says has lower impacts on the animals than normal monitoring efforts. She is also helping the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation create culture-to-career connection materials relating to STEM and her seal research in Cape Cod.

“The ‘culture-to-career’ connection focuses on taking what the Nation students are comfortable with, like their cultural stories and practices, and showing them how the knowledge and appreciation of their culture can be made into a career, for example culinary arts focusing on Indigenous foods or biology focusing on protecting Indigenous lands,” she says.

The GRFP will support Lacio’s move to UNH’s integrative biology Ph.D. program. Her goal is to work for a non-profit or foundation focused on helping animal populations that are locally at risk. As a Cherokee citizen, she also hopes to continue working with local Indigenous Nations and create culture-to-career connections for their students.

Else Schlerman  wants to find ways that humans can live more harmoniously with the natural world, especially in face of climate change and large-scale habitat loss.  As a doctoral student in the Natural Resources and Earth Systems Science Ph.D. program, her research focuses on soil’s potential to store carbon, which speaks to her broad interest in ecologically informed climate change solutions. She is working with professor Stuart Grandy and associate professor Jessica Ernakovich in UNH’s  Center of Soil Biogeochemistry and Microbial Ecology .

“Soils are the largest terrestrial pool of carbon – greater than the vegetation and atmosphere stocks combined,” says Schlerman, who earned her bachelor’s degree in physics with a German minor from Wellesley College. “Ecosystem-based land management practices can improve the health of the soil and the environment while also removing carbon from the atmosphere. Through my research, I hope to develop the basic research on the mechanisms of soil carbon storage that can inform agricultural and ecological management strategies.”

After completing her doctorate, Schlerman plans to work as a scientist for an environmental conservation organization where she can apply the research she’s doing now to broader restoration and conservation efforts.

NSF awarded 500 fewer GRFP awards this year, making competition for the fellowship especially stiff, says Leigh Pratt, director of UNH’s Office of National Fellowships . Pratt and Michael Thompson, director of Research & Large Center Development , prepare UNH candidates for success as co-teachers of the UNH NSF GRFP class each fall ( INCO 791  /  GRAD 891 ). The course prepares eligible seniors and first- and second-year graduate students to submit applications to the program. Since UNH began offering the GRFP prep in 2019, 13 of 16 students who have been awarded the fellowship have taken the class.

This Notice supersedes  NOT-OD-23-076  and establishes stipend levels for fiscal year (FY) 2024 Kirschstein-NRSA awards for undergraduate, predoctoral, and postdoctoral trainees and fellows, as shown in the tables below which reflects the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 ( Public Law 118-047 ), signed into law on March 23, 2024. NIH is being responsive, as much as possible given the constrained budget environment, to the Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on Re-Envisioning NIH-Supported Postdoctoral Training report recommendations. In fact, FY 2024 stipend levels for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and fellows represents the largest year-over-year increase in recent history. We are committed to reaching the $70,000 recommendation over the next 3-4 years, as appropriations allow.  The Training Related Expenses and Institutional Allowances for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and fellows reflect a moderate increase. The Tuition and Fees for all educational levels remain unchanged from the prior budget year. See  NIH Funding Strategies for guidance on current NIH Fiscal Operations.

The budgetary categories described in this Notice apply only to Kirschstein-NRSA awards made with FY 2024 funds. All FY 2024 awards previously issued using  NOT-OD-23-076 will be revised to adjust funding to the FY 2024 levels. Appointments to institutional training grants that have already been awarded in FY 2024 must be amended to reflect the FY 2024 stipend levels once the training grant award has been adjusted by NIH. Amended appointments must be submitted through xTrain in the eRA Commons. Retroactive adjustments or supplementation of stipends or other budgetary categories with Kirschstein-NRSA funds for an award made prior to October 1, 2023, are not permitted.

Stipends Effective with all Kirschstein-NRSA awards made on or after October 1, 2023, the following annual stipend levels apply to all individuals receiving support through institutional research training grants or individual fellowships.

Undergraduates: For institutional training grants supporting undergraduate trainees (T34, TL4), appointments for undergraduate candidates will continue to be made by distinct categories (i.e., Freshmen/Sophomores and Juniors/Seniors), but the stipend levels for the categories will be the same:

Predoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T35, T90, TL1) and individual fellowships (F30, F31), one stipend level is used for all predoctoral candidates, regardless of the level of experience.

Postdoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T90, TL1) and individual fellowships (F32), the stipend level for the entire first year of support is determined by the number of full years of relevant postdoctoral experience when the award is issued. Relevant experience may include research experience (including industrial), teaching assistantship, internship, residency, clinical duties, or other time spent in a health-related field beyond that of the qualifying doctoral degree. Once the appropriate stipend level has been determined, the trainee or fellow must be paid at that level for the entire grant year. The stipend for each additional year of Kirschstein-NRSA support is the next level in the stipend structure and does not change mid-year.

Senior Fellows (F33 only): The stipend level must be commensurate with the base salary or remuneration that would have been paid by the institution with which the individual is permanently affiliated when the award is issued but cannot exceed the current Kirschstein-NRSA stipend limit set by the NIH for those with 7 or more years of experience. The level of Kirschstein-NRSA support will take into account concurrent salary support provided by the institution and the policy of the sponsoring institution. NIH support does not provide fringe benefits for senior fellows.

Relevant Policies Current stipend levels are to be used in the preparation of future competing and non-competing NRSA institutional training grant and individual fellowship applications. They will be administratively applied to all applications currently in the review process.

NRSA support is limited to 5 years for predoctoral trainees (6 years for dual-degree training), and 3 years for postdoctoral fellows. The NIH provides eight levels of postdoctoral stipends to accommodate individuals who complete other forms of health-related training prior to accepting a Kirschstein-NRSA supported position. (The presence of eight discrete levels of experience, however, does not constitute an endorsement of extended periods of postdoctoral research training).

It should be noted that the maximum amount that NIH will award to support the compensation package for a graduate student research assistant remains at the zero level postdoctoral stipend, as described in  the NIH Grants Policy Statement 2.3.7.9 .

Tuition and Fees, Training Related Expenses, and Institutional Allowance for Kirschstein-NRSA Recipients

The NIH will provide funds for Tuition and Fees, Training Related Expenses, and Institutional Allowance as detailed below.

A. Tuition and Fees

Undergraduate and Predoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T34, T35, T90, TL1, TL4) and individual fellowships (F30, F31), an amount per predoctoral trainee or fellow equal to 60% of the actual tuition level at the applicant institution, up to $16,000 per year, will be provided. If the trainee or fellow is enrolled in a program that supports formally combined, dual-degree training (e.g., MD/PhD, DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), the amount provided per trainee or fellow will be 60% of the actual tuition level, up to $21,000 per year.

Postdoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T90, TL1) and individual fellowships (F32, F33), an amount per postdoctoral trainee or fellow equal to 60% of the actual tuition level at the applicant institution, up to $4,500 per year, will be provided. If the trainee or fellow is enrolled in a program that supports postdoctoral individuals in formal degree-granting training, an amount per postdoctoral trainee or fellow equal to 60% of the actual tuition level at the applicant institution, up to $16,000 per year, will be provided.

B. Training Related Expenses on Institutional Training Grants

For institutional training grants (T32, T35, T90, TL1), these expenses (including health insurance costs) for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees will be paid at the amounts shown below for all competing and non-competing awards made with FY 2024 funds.

• Predoctoral Trainees:  $4,750
• Postdoctoral Trainees:  $12,400

C. Institutional Allowance for Individual Fellows

This allowance for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows will be paid at the amounts shown below for all competing and non-competing awards made with FY 2024 funds.

Institutional Allowance for individual fellows (F30, F31, F32, F33) sponsored by non-Federal Public, Private, and Non-Profit Institutions (Domestic & Foreign, including health insurance):

• Predoctoral Fellows:  $4,750
• Postdoctoral Fellows:  $12,400

Institutional Allowance for individual fellows (F30, F31, F32, F33) sponsored by Federal and For-Profit Institutions (including health insurance):

• Predoctoral Fellows:  $3,650
• Postdoctoral Fellows:  $11,300

Graduate student strike ends at Indiana University

F riday marks the end to a three-day strike held by Indiana University graduate students. The students are pushing for union recognition and better wages.

"Grades don't get entered, papers aren't read, quizzes won't be graded if grad students aren't there," Bryce Greene said. "Students won't get assistance, there's a personal touch that comes with that education that grad students are an essential part of."

Since Wednesday, the students have had picket signs instead of books in their hands and skipped classes.

"Despite how wonderful the department is, there's structural problems within the university that make education inaccessible," graduate student Matthew Rodriguez said.

The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition says they've spent years fighting for better wages. But it wasn't until a strike in 2022 when the university raised wages by 50%.

A university spokesperson told 13News the minimum stipend for grad students will be $23,000 next school year. Along with the stipend, the university offers free tuition and health insurance to graduate students.

IGWC members want the stipend to be raised by $5,000 to $28,000.

"Even under the current stipend we currently make, they are almost half of what the living wage is in Monroe County," IGWC spokesperson David Garner said.

Just one day before the strike started, IU faculty voted no confidence in President Pamela Whitten and two administrators. IGWC leaders say the vote was the start of the change they are wanting.

In response to the no-confidence vote, Whitten wrote:

"While we will not always agree, our community is made stronger by an array of viewpoints and voices—including those expressed as part of this process.

We serve at a time when trust in higher education is at record lows, and expectations for our role as an economic and cultural driver are at record highs. Our self-concept of purpose and value often differs wildly from how we are viewed by lawmakers, civic leaders, industry and much of the general public. Such differences are not tenable forever.

There is no going back to an earlier time. Demographic changes, resulting financial realities, and political developments are only accelerating. To combat the challenges that mark this new environment, I welcome thoughtful ideas and consideration."

IGWC said they hope the faculty who voted no confidence will stand with them in their fight.

After this strike, IGWC told 13News they are working with other university organizations to create a statewide movement. Another student organization, the Indiana Daily Student newspaper, will stage a walkout Thursday, April 25 in response to budget cuts.

K-State students receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship awards

MANHATTAN — Eight current and former K-State students were selected or named honorable mention for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program , a five-year fellowship that includes an annual stipend of $37,000. The current students selected for the program are Kalea Nippert, senior in ecology and evolutionary biology, St. George ; Kale Stahl, senior in applied mathematics and physics, Topeka ; Carson Connard , senior in mathematics, The Woodlands, Texas ; and Shannon Ruble, doctoral student in psychology, Parkersburg, West Virginia . The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, or NSF GRFP, recognizes graduate students pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics, engineering, technology or science. Its purpose is to maintain quality, vitality and diversity in the nation's scientific and engineering workforce. "These exceptional students have been honored with this prestigious fellowship, showcasing not only their academic ability but also their commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge," said David Rosowsky, vice president for research. "We are proud of their achievements and anticipate the groundbreaking discoveries and innovations they will lead in the future." Nippert, who will graduate in May, has been completing an undergraduate research project under Zak Ratajczak, assistant professor of biology, since 2022. Her research is focused on understanding extreme fire effects within woody plant communities and if extreme fire could be used as a management strategy to control woody encroachment occurring throughout global grassland and savanna ecosystems. "The NSF GRFP will allow me to be fully funded — my tuition will be paid for the duration of my Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina Greensboro," Nippert said. "This will help me reach my goals of getting a Ph.D. and becoming a research ecologist. I am very honored and excited to have the chance to receive the GRFP." Stahl is researching inverse scattering problems, with Dinh-Liem Nguyen, associate professor of mathematics. The purpose of their research is to develop a stable "imaging functional" for periodic objects. "The GRF is a very prestigious award, and receiving it will allow me to focus on research and passing my qualifying exams in my first years of graduate school," Stahl said. "I will be attending Purdue University's mathematics Ph.D. program in the fall, and this fellowship will allow me to start research almost immediately. I'm very excited that I will be able to do more research earlier, as research is by far my favorite part of studying mathematics." Connard, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude in May, is working with Lino Amorim, associate professor of mathematics, on a project focused on developing algebraic invariants for Lagrangian suborbifolds. "The GRFP will not only allow me to focus significantly more time and energy on research in graduate school, but it will also allow me to live more comfortably due to the generous size of the fellowship," Connard said. "I intend to pursue my Ph.D., and I aim to work in research — ideally in the academic realm — as a career. I am absolutely and completely honored to have received this prestigious distinction, and I have only just begun to reap its benefits." Connard will attend the University of Washington in the fall to pursue his Ph.D. Ruble is in her second year studying neural mechanisms of fear and avoidance behaviors in rats and how social interactions impact them. She is conducting her research with Maria Diehl, professor of psychological sciences. Ruble, who will complete her doctorate in the spring of 2027, said that after she earns her Ph.D., she plans to pursue a career in either academia or science communication. "The NSF GRFP provides me with an opportunity to conduct high-quality research and communicate the findings through publications and conference presentations," Ruble said. "I will also be able to mentor undergraduates involved in my GRFP-funded work and help them pursue careers in STEM as I would in a future career in academia." Abigail Schmidt, senior in environmental biology and natural resources and environmental science, Shawnee , was named honorable mention. Her research focuses on how climate extremes, like drought, will impact ecosystem structure and function. Ratajczak, assistant professor biology, is her research mentor. Schmidt will attend graduate school at Utah State University to study savanna ecosystems. Along with Nippert, Stahl, Connard, Ruble and Schmidt, three recent K-State graduates were also selected for the fellowship or named honorable mention: Reilly Jensen, a May 2021 bachelor's graduate in Spanish and biology, Buhler , who is at Wichita State University, fellowship recipient; Maxwell Harman, a May 2022 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Inman , who is now at Michigan State University, fellowship recipient; and Cole Wilson, May 2021 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Wichita , who is now at Northwestern University, honorable mention.
