The most beautiful church In Jamaica queens the people there and priests welcome everyone I go there with my family the best church ever !

Photo of Emily Y.

For me, the most beautiful church in Queens. My dad semi-proposed to my mom here, they got married here, there is a n alter with a replica of the Guatemalan "Man of Esquipulas" or more commonly known as the "Black Jesus", when my mom passed, her 7-day Novena was done there and especially because my dad still attends services here. I have been to many weddings, funerals and baptisms here. It is quite beautiful and serene.

presentation church jamaica

5 years ago, my friend committed suicide and I ran over to the church to beg for a priest to pray with me. The priest opened the door of the rectory, poked his head out, and told me to call 311 if Im in need of help, and then he closed the door on me. The priest was a middle aged man with blond hair, and when I see him walking a german shepard dog, I have to cross the street to be away from this despicable man. BTW, and amazing priest at St Barts in Elmhurst was able.to pray with me and guide me spiritually. Please do not patronize this so called church. They smile when they take your money and shut the door on you when you need help. Please find a church that provides a true channel to the Word of God, Not this deplorable excuse for a church.

While Father Zeller and the parishioners were busy raising funds, the church was being constructed under the leadership of Carpenter Pederson in “gothic style”. The building stood sixty feet from the ground and its area was thirty-five by fifty-one feet. There were four windows on each side and four corner windows in the roof. The main entrance on Flushing Avenue (Parsons Blvd) was a gothic porch while in the rear of the church were two side entrances. The interior was paneled oak on the sides with a high gothic ceiling exposed in wood. Twenty feet above the roof was a frame canopy supported by four posts which would enclose a gold-leaf cast iron statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

While the church was under construction, Father Zeller offered the first Mass in the parish on May 16, 1886 in an old farmhouse, built in 1767, which was serving as church and rectory. On weekdays Mass was celebrated in a room of the farmhouse and every Saturday evening the altar was carried to the unfinished church where people sat on barrels, boxes, logs and boards. A planning bench served as a vesting table and a sawhorse served as a communion rail.

At last the church was completed and on September 8, 1886, the Feast of the Birth of Mary, it was officially dedicated by Bishop John Loughlin under the title “Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

The following year, 1887, Father Zeller opened a parish school where he employed the help of the Dominican Sisters. He encouraged Mother Superior, Sister Seraphina Staimer, to buy six lots of land adjoining the church. He then built a convent which had an orphanage and two classrooms. The orphanage cared for about fifty parish children and the convent was known as St. Elizabeth’s Convent.

The parish grew so rapidly that its facilities soon had to be expanded. A two-story frame school house was completed and dedicated by October 1, 1893. Upon completion of the parish school, Father Zeller began the construction, which was done by William Kassner and Son, architects and builders. The area of the building was enlarged to 3,000 square feet providing room for four hundred and fifty parishioners. The church had a chime of three bells and a four faced clock.

The church was completed and the dedication took place on October 25, 1894. Bishop Charles E. McDonnell, who succeeded Bishop Loughlin began the dedication ceremonies, at which Vicar General P.J. McNamara gave the English language sermon and Father M. Wagner the German sermon to the many guests and parishioners in attendance.

Suspension of the Rite of Peace

Because of the escalation of the coronavirus and the fear that it has engendered throughout the country, the Rite of Peace will be suspended entirely at all Masses until the situation improves. While everyone is urged to exert necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this malady, even if it necessitates staying away from Mass if one is experiencing unusual symptoms, no one who is in good health is discouraged from coming to church for fear of unnecessary physical contact with other people. Exercise good judgment in communicating with other people by use of positive language, a wave or a bow instead of hand to hand contact. This is common sense which no one will disagree with. Please be advised that all extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist always sanitize their hands before distributing Holy Communion during Mass.

2020 Catholic Charity Fund Appeal

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta

The 2020 Catholic Charity Appeal has begun. Many parishioners have already received a letter from Bishop Thomas Tobin asking for their annual donation. If anyone has already responded and sent in a contribution to the Diocese of Providence please be assured that the amount will be applied to whichever of the three parishes you are officially registered. During the weekend of March 22 an in-pew appeal will take place for those who have not responded, with the hope that everyone be given an opportunity to support this annual fundraising effort. Your sacrifice will empower the multiple ministries of the Diocese of Providence to serve the many thousands of people throughout the state who are in need. Your generosity in the past has been very much appreciated, and the hope is that you will continue to help this year. Please keep the success of the Appeal in your prayers.

Winter Heating Assistance Grants

Through a most generous donation of an anonymous benefactor, we are very happy to announce that any parishioner of our tri-parish community who is in need of help to keep their heat on may apply for a grant. Eligibility is determined by parish membership and Mass attendance. Requests should be submitted in writing with your contact information and sent to Father Ed at the Parish Offices at 5 Gibbs Street, North Providence.

For Your Lenten Almsgiving

Saint Edward Food & Wellness Center is in serious need of supplies such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc. which are staple items our clients seek but are not always available unless we purchase them on sale at the Dollar Store on occasion. If you are thinking of an idea for an extra Lenten sacrifice maybe you could buy them on sale and bring them to Mass. These items are far more needed than non-perishable food, so you can donate them rather than purchasing food. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Saint Anthony Appeal

Letters were sent out to all registered parishioners requesting the customary annual donation to supplement church expenses. In particular the necessary funds that were expended for the major repairs on the church were higher than anticipated and substantially impacted our savings. Thus it is critical that funds are raised to complete the work. There is an ongoing request for contributions. Donations of $250 or more will be recognized by an engraved brick in a memorial walkway around the church. Larger donations of $500 or more will be acknowledged on a memorial wall of 12 inch square tiles mounted along the eastern wall of the church. Donors will be contacted early spring with details on the memorials. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Come to the Holy Land in 2021

Collette, an international tour company based in Rhode Island, hosts a special pilgrimage to the Holy Land next year from February 3-11 for Father Ed, parishioners and friends. There will be Mass celebrated throughout the tour in special churches of historic significance. The itinerary is very comprehensive, including most meals, and allows for some time for optional activities such as a visit to the Dead Sea. But everyone will visit the Jordan River baptismal site, enjoy a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, visit the Mount of Olives, and see the famous Western wall of the ancient temple of Jerusalem, along with other highlights. Many other significant places not included here but will be covered in a special travel presentation to be held on Tuesday, February, 25, 2020 at 6pm in the Saint Anthony Parish Center. Color brochures are now available. Please RSVP to Gilda Delmonico at 2322251, Camille Roberti at 353-1638 or Father Ed at 353-3120

Unáse nosotros por la Misa en español será el viernes 7 de octubre a las 7:00 pm. Rosario a las 6:30 pm.

4 MAY - COMMUNAL FIRST SATURDAYS

First Saturdays at 7:30 am

All are invited and encouraged to make five “First Saturdays” according to the request of Our Lady in her apparitions at Fatima. Mary promised salvation to those who go to confession once a month for five months and receive Holy Communion on the first Saturday of the month for five consecutive months. We invite everyone to gather in the church on the First Saturday at 7:30 am to fulfill together the various requests of Our Lady.

The schedule will be as follows:

  • 7:30 am - Rosary
  • 8:00 am - Mass and Communion of Reparation
  • After Mass, 15 minutes of meditation and prayers for the pope.

Revival’s in the Air

AN EXCITING JOURNEY AHEAD

Our world is hurting. We all need healing, yet many of us are separated from the very source of our strength. Jesus Christ invites us to return to the source and summit of our faith in the celebration of the Eucharist. The National Eucharistic Revival is a movement to restore understanding and devotion to this great mystery here in the United States by helping us renew our worship of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Watch the video to learn more about the exciting journey ahead and how you can be a part of it!

My dad semi-proposed to my mom here, they got married here, there is a n alter with a replica of the Guatemalan "Man of Esquipulas" or more commonly known as the "Black Jesus", when my mom passed, her 7-day Novena was done there and especially because my dad still attends services here.
