World Wrestling Entertainment, (WWE) is a public global company. It deals in professional wrestling. Apart from this, the company obtains revenue from product licensing, films and music production. The WWE shows appear in 30 languages. The shows reach viewers in 145 countries. In addition, the company offers viewers with a variety of products. These include SmackDown and Raw. The company also offers “Extreme Championship Wrestling” (Black, 2011). These shows mostly attract male viewers. They also feature popular wrestlers like Stone Cold, The Rock and the Undertaker.

The company faced a crisis in 2009. It signed a deal with a leading company in the entertainment industry. The company, WGN America, was to air WWE superstars. It also signed another deal with a leading sports and entertainment company. It signed a circulation deal with Euro-sport.

This was to distribute WWE shows twice a week in Europe. Euro-sport had to broadcast “WWE Vintage” collection and “This Week in WWE” to European countries. Vince Russo on how to write a show: Blank piece of paper, and that’s what Vince [McMahon] cannot do. Vince McMahon, bro. You know, it’s not one of his tools. You cannot give Vince McMahon a blank piece of paper and ask him to write a show. You’ve got to give him something. And that’s what Ed [Ferrara] and I did. We wrote the show in its completion, and we handed a final show to Vince. So there were never any big decisions to be made. Like, Vince would kind of go through our show and look at the nuances and stuff and maybe add a little something to punch this up or something like that. But once he got that full show, there were no big decisions made at that point. It’s that show.”

Comparing a writer to a booker: Usually, a booker is a former wrestler or even in some cases, an active wrestler. And what a booker is going to do because like I said, they’re former wrestlers. What book workers do is they start with the match. What two guys are going to have a great match. So they will book that match, and then they will try to make sense out of a story with a writer. It’s completely the other way. It’s the story first. What you guys would match up with a good story. So it’s the story first, and then the story will organically become the match. So it’s really bookers start with match first.”

Using titles as props: “Nobody wins the belt. The belt has never been won by anybody. But the basis of wrestling is that prop or that belt is supposed to be the most important thing on the show. Everybody should be there because they want to win that belt. Everything should be revolving around that belt. Because again, you’ve got to start with the premise of if this is real, if this is MMA, everybody wants to be the champion. If this is professional boxing, everybody wants to be the champion. If this is professional wrestling, everybody should want to be the champion.”

Working off of bullet points versus working off of a script: “It would depend on who it was. It really would bro, because bro, there were some guys that wanted me to write a verbatim and Jeff Jarrett was one of those guys. Like, Jeff wanted me to write his stuff verbatim. Goldust [Dustin Rhodes], he wanted me to write his stuff verbatim. Bro, I wrote a lot of Shawn’s [Michaels] stuff verbatim. It really depends on who you are writing for, bro. One of the things that I learned was when you got a great technical wrestler, when you’ve got like a Jarrett, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, guys like that would want me to write out their stuff verbatim because all they wanted to think about was the match. Like, their focus was on the match and they had to trust in me. Like, I’m going to be thinking about my match and I’m going to be sitting down. It was the match, the match, the match. ‘Vince, just write my verb and give it to me of what I have to say.’ So that’s the thing. But you got to adjust to the individual. Again. I get the impression that’s not what’s happening there today. It’s a broad…. Everybody gets the script and they got to read it verbatim. When we were doing it bro, it really depended on how much does that talent need us? It changed from person to person.”

The topic I have chosen to write about is the world of professional wrestling. There are many reasons as to why this subject has interested me. One major reason is that I grew up watching pro-wrestling on television.

As a child, I was fascinated with the spectacle of the wrestling matches and wondered at the wrestlers themselves. At that age, I took wrestling for what it was. It was a full-contact gladiator sport filled with exaggerated and extravagant wrestlers, cocky commentators, and interesting “one-of-a kind” personalities which added up to a high entertainment value. As I got older and more aware of the sport, I did not just see it as another part of sports entertainment but also as a multi-million dollar business which catered to a wide audience.

I began to wonder what was it that made this popular genere work and how it was able to attract the crowds of people, young and old. I also wanted to know the history of pro-wrestling. How did it get started and how it became a part of the American culture? As a fan for several of my childhood years, I now wanted to know the real deal behind wrestling. The professional wrestling sport is a very secretive business.

It is on a “what you see is what you get” basis. Many of the fans take the sport for face value and enjoy it for what it is, even if many of them are uninformed on the inside workings of it all. Although many books have been published about wrestling, a high number of them are as cryptic and secretive as the business itself. That is why I am motivated to go into an in-depth research to answer and unravel the questions of the professional wrestling world.

Professional Wrestling. Part II: Knowledge andPreconceptions After being exposed to professional wrestling for quite sometime, I became somewhat knowledgeable of the sport. I became familiar with most of the wrestling superstars it produced, notably Hulk Hogan which many consider the icon of pro- wrestling. I was also mindful of the wrestling maneuvers and techniques that were used.

Although I knew all this, it was all common knowledge. Through personal experience, the people I know who are fans of the sport only know this basic ideology of its premise. I feel that one major reason for the scarce information on pro- wrestling is due to the lack of media coverage. Wrestling is infamous for blurring the lines between true sport and pure entertainment.

Many major news, magazines, and articles rarely cover the wrestling world because of its lack of believability. It is this secrecy and “figure it out for yourself” attitude of the business that brings rise to many enticingquestions. Probably the million dollar question for wrestling is whether of not it is “fake”. Many people find the meaning of the word as something being completely unreal.

It’s things like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy that are fake since they don’t exist in real life. Pro-wrestling is part of real life and real life is in no way fake. Furthermore, even if wrestling was a staged event, why does it continue to attract its fans for as long as it has? These aren’t just ten-year olds who can be easily fooled, but grown adults who spend their hard earned money on live shows, merchandise, and pay-per-view showings. Still, there lies the questions about the wrestlers themselves.

These are people who are out there doing a job. There are questions like how much money does a professional wrestler get paid and how does one even get into the business to begin with? These are all the questions, along with many others, that I hope to discover and will hopefully bring arise to many interesting and surprising answers to professional wrestling. Professional Wrestling. Part III: Resources The main resource for professional wrestling have been the wrestling shows themselves.

Resources on written text and literature have been quite limited. Many books that have been written are very uninformative or “watered down” because they respect the secrecy of the business. Many fans can now turn to “sheets”. These are newsletters that contain good information and deal with wrestling in a more up front way.

With the lack of information, the average fan is forced to rely on the traditional word of mouth. If one is able to get in contact with someone who knows a lot about the business, or better yet, someone who is currently or was in some way involved in the business, you could obtain a wealth of information. The major problem with that is that they are very hard to come by and would be likely tight lipped about the whole thing. With many obstacles and roadblocks in the way in just getting vital information on professional wrestling, one may have a hard time creating a research paper.

One revolutionary trend that may be able to change that is the Internet. The Internet provides an uncensored, up front, view on pro-wrestling. This is a place where you can find the most knowledgeable and informed people on the sport. The average fan will simply be overwhelmed and be able to find out things they never knew existed.

They can find out the past, present, and possibly the future of professional wrestling. It is also known that several insiders and one or two wrestlers have given candid interviews over the Net. (This is rare because the wrestlers or the organizations they work for are unwilling to reveal their true character.) With the available resources, I plan to write a report that contains information from a diverse mix of sources along with my personal opinion and feelings in order to shed new light on the professional wrestling world.

Stone Cold (Steve Austin)

The rattlesnake was the face of the attitude era.

While other names mentioned helped the WWE at a time when the company was having a problem staying relevant, that can't be said for Steve Austin. This man became the biggest act in the company at a time when it was at its hottest , with names like The Rock, Triple H, and Mick Foley helping create amazing stories and weekly television.

It can't be argued that if Austin never came to the WWE and became "Stone Cold", wrestling might not be what it is today.

The Great One (The Rock)

Had a way on the mic that others didn't.

And who better to move onto besides Austin's greatest rival, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? The Rock did something that was far unprecedented and became not only a major player in the WWE, but one of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood.

Anytime he returns, it does massive numbers , as shown by his recent return for WrestleMania 40. The Rock had audiences at the edge of their seat just by him speaking random nonsense into a microphone.

The Nature Boy (Ric Flair)

The dirtiest player in the game was a fantastic heel.

While Sting was the face of WCW, what good is a face without a bad guy to go against them? That was Ric Flair. Anything he said or did could make him the most hated man in the company, and he did that like no other. His antics on the mic and in the ring earned him the title of "The Dirtiest Player In The Game".

Flair did all of this amazing character work while also being considered one of the greatest from an in-ring perspective.

The Hulkster (Hulk Hogan)

Non-wrestling fans know hulk hogan.

Randy Savage most likely takes second place when talking about wrestlers that non-wrestling fans know, number one is Hulk Hogan, without a doubt. People who never watched wrestling have probably heard of Hulk Hogan for one reason or another.

His popularity was through the roof and saw him become the face of restaurants, the lead actor in films , and so much more. There were not many celebrities as huge as Hogan during his prime.

The Deadman (The Undertaker)

The man behind the legendary wrestlemania streak.

With all that being said about these legends, there is no bigger character in the WWE than The Undertaker. For decades this man sweat and bled the WWE and was always around whenever the company called on him. His WrestleMania streak became such a coveted thing that it was almost as big (if not bigger) than the World title at points.

While there have been horror-themed characters in professional wrestling long before The Undertaker, and there will be long after, no one has been able to reach the same level as The Deadman.

Meet the mankato man who helped change professional wrestling.

MANKATO - In the late 1960s, Norm Kietzer stood inside an armory in Marshall, Minn., across from a man who could've popped Kietzer's eye out of its socket with just a thumb.

That man was Harley Race, a fearsome hulk of a professional wrestler known for his toughness and his bad behavior. Race once beat up three men in a Minneapolis diner after he spotted one of them slapping a woman — then went to the hospital to get a knife removed that he'd been stabbed with. And Race wanted Kietzer to pay for five speeding tickets Race had picked up on his way to the armory.

Kietzer wasn't afraid. He promoted the armory show that night. Race was the main event against "Cowboy" Bill Watts. And Race was over an hour late, making the fans wait to see him.

"I never paid those tickets," Kietzer said. "I handed them back."

Kietzer, 80, is a somewhat forgotten name in today's professional wrestling. Yet he had a huge influence on how fans see the sport.

From his Mankato home, Kietzer for decades published programs, magazines and memorabilia for a majority of wrestling promoters in the U.S. He was more journalist than writer, helping fans learn about their favorite athletes at a time when wrestling was divided into territories where competing companies put on matches without publicly acknowledging the competition.

Minneapolis is still waiting to hear whether it will be the next host of Wrestlemania, the biggest wrestling event of the year and one with an economic impact close to that of the Super Bowl. Kietzer's work paved the way for such national coverage once wrestling exploded with mainstream appeal in the '80s and '90s.

"He treated the fans with respect," Minnesota pro wrestling historian George Schire said. "He showed them that wrestling can be talked about while not making the fan feel like they're an idiot."

'A little sense of realism'

Kietzer grew up in nearby Vernon Center, where he watched American Wrestling Association (AWA) matches out of Minneapolis on TV. But he didn't get involved in wrestling until his time at Minnesota State Mankato.

At the matches in Minneapolis one night, he asked if he could take some of the programs home to redesign and sell when wrestling came to Mankato.

"I went to a quick-print place, cut stuff out of a few Minneapolis programs I had, typed up some stuff … and folded it in so it was a four-page program," Kietzer said.

Kietzer tried his hand as an English teacher in the area for two years but switched careers as the programs took off and he was offered a job at his first pro wrestling magazine.

Local wrestlers were touring "in other territories across the country over time," he said. "And they would show my programs to other promoters who would contact me and wonder if I could make up programs for them."

It wasn't long before Kietzer published innovative magazines to be sold at matches in other wrestling territories, also known as promotions. In the '70s and '80s, there were more than 40 territories in the U.S. and Canada. Kietzer worked with more than 20 at one point.

He treated the sport with more factual integrity than other promoter-sponsored publications, which often had fanciful or completely made-up stories. "He put a little sense of realism to it," Schire said. "He wanted to make it more journalistically correct than just some fabricated thing from the newsstand. And it worked."

Kietzer's publications were also training grounds for future historians like Schire, prominent wrestling journalists like Dave Meltzer, and even future wrestling personalities like Jim Cornette and Paul Heyman, who earlier this month was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Industry impacts

In 1972, Kietzer moved to New York to run even more magazines, where his actions had far-ranging repercussions felt to this day.

Kietzer says he suggested to Vince McMahon Sr. that his company, the World Wide Wrestling Federation should drop a 'W' from its name. McMahon did just that in 1979.

"I asked him if it would be OK to change the abbreviation in my publication for them to WWF," he said. "It would be the same as all the other promotions at the time as they all had three letters."

Schire said he had never heard that story before, but he believes Kietzer.

The WWF went on to national success, but a series of lawsuits from the World Wildlife Fund in the 1990s and early 2000s forced the company to change its name again, to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

Kietzer also influenced women's wrestling at the time. In the late 1970s, the New York State Athletic Commission (which then included legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson) decided to stop licensing female wrestlers to compete.

"It wasn't what I wanted to watch, but I always thought the women should have the chance to wrestle same as the men," he said.

He published editorials asking whether the commissioners were bigots. Kietzer also asked Vivian Vachon, one of the most famous women's wrestlers at the time, to appear with him on talk shows in New York to discuss the issue. The commission reinstated women's licenses after a few years, paving the way for the WWE to incorporate more women.

Kietzer moved back to Mankato in the early 1980s after the magazine company he worked for shut down. It was there he started the Wrestling News, which has since become his best-known publication.

"When I first started taking pictures, [Tennessee promoter] Christine Jarrett encouraged me to send them in to the Wrestling News," Cornette said in an interview on the "6:05 Superpodcast" in 2017. "They wanted pictures of the guys so they [could sell] more magazines."

Opportunities dried up when territories went out of business as the WWE became more successful, which meant Kietzer couldn't publish as many programs.

He lost WWE's business after Vince McMahon Jr. took over, due to a spat. Kietzer said he inadvertently told McMahon Sr. about a TV screw-up his son was responsible for, where a local station played the wrong taped show a week early, leading to a decline in ticket sales at a big show. McMahon Jr. never forgave Kietzer and later blamed him for the legal troubles with the World Wildlife Fund, he claims.

Kietzer decided to retire once WWE became the preeminent promotion in the U.S. He sold his archives to a fellow journalist around 2003. Today, those archives are owned by Brian Last, a New Jersey wrestling historian and podcaster who restarted the Wrestling News in 2022.

Last has called Kietzer a trailblazer in covering pro wrestling. He's also teased another project involving Kietzer's archives on various podcasts in recent months. He was unavailable for comment.

Kietzer doesn't follow wrestling nowadays — his friends all left the wrestling business around the time he did. He still puts together a movie magazine on westerns for a handful of subscribers. He gets out to sing karaoke a few times a week.

Kietzer can't always remember exact dates, and he sticks to his journalistic code — he refuses to name his favorite professional wrestler, for example. And he remains proud of his work — and the time he refused to pay Race's speeding tickets.

"What I didn't tell him," he said, "was I made more money off concessions waiting for him to show up than at any other show I ever ran."

Akebono, First Foreign-Born Sumo Grand Champion, Dies at 54

Born in Hawaii, he moved to Japan in 1988 and won 11 grand championships. His success drove a resurgence in the sport’s popularity.

Taro Akebono, a Hawaii-born sumo wrestler who became the sport’s first foreign grand champion and helped to fuel a resurgence in its popularity in the 1990s, has died in Tokyo. He was 54.

He died of heart failure in early April while receiving care at a hospital, according to a statement from his family that was distributed by the United States military in Japan on Thursday.

When he became Japan’s 64th yokozuna, or grand champion sumo wrestler, in 1993, he was the first foreign-born wrestler to achieve the sport’s highest title in its 300-year modern history. He went on to win a total of 11 grand championships, and his success set the stage for an era during which foreign-born wrestlers dominated the top levels of Japan’s national sport .

Akebono, who was 6-foot-8 and 466 pounds when he was first named yokozuna at 23, towered over his Japanese opponents. Painfully shy outside the dohyo, as the sumo ring is known, he was known for using his height and reach to keep opponents at a distance.

Akebono’s rivalry with the Japanese brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana, both grand champions, was a major driver of sumo’s renewed popularity in the 1990s. During the opening ceremony for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Akebono demonstrated the sumo ring entrance ritual for an international audience, commanding the arena with his hulking physique and captivating stare.

Taro Akebono was born Chad George Ha’aheo Rowan in Waimanalo, Hawaii, in 1969. He played basketball in high school and briefly at Hawaii Pacific University before moving to Japan in 1988 at the invitation of a fellow Hawaiian wrestler who had become a trainer.

Knowing nothing about Japan and speaking almost no Japanese, he began living and training at a sumo stable governed by strict hierarchy, cooking and cleaning for more experienced wrestlers. Soon he was charting a meteoric rise through the sport’s ranks, dominating with his size.

“We were just brute strength,” he said in a later interview , referring to himself and his fellow wrestlers from Hawaii in the 1990s. “We won fast or we lost fast. We weren’t too technical.”

In 1992, the Yokozuna Promotion Council, which decides which wrestlers are worthy of sumo’s top honor, denied it to another Hawaiian, saying that no foreigner could possess the dignity befitting the title. The decision prompted allegations of racism and raised questions about the council’s selection process. Only a handful of wrestlers hold the title at the same time, and they are selected through a vote from candidates who have won two consecutive tournaments.

A year later, just five years after arriving in Japan and joining the sport, Akebono broke through that barrier.

He later said in interviews that he rarely considered his nationality in the ring, thinking of himself as a sumo wrestler first and foremost. He became a naturalized Japanese citizen in 1996, and changed his name to Taro Akebono. His chosen sumo name, Akebono, means “dawn” in Japanese.

“I wasn’t thinking, ‘I’m an American, I’m going to go out there, plant my flag in the middle of the ring and take on the Japanese,’” he told The New York Times in 2013.

He gained acceptance and popularity in the sumo world in part because people in Japan appreciated his devotion to the sport, even though, in his early competitions, cheers from the crowd were far louder for his Japanese-born rivals.

“He makes me forget he is a foreigner because of his earnest attitude toward sumo,” Yoshihisa Shimoie, editor of Sumo magazine, said in 1993 . By the early 2000s, dozens of the ranked wrestlers were foreign , including Mongolians, a Georgian and an Argentine.

According to his family, Akebono is survived by his wife, Christine Rowan; a daughter, Caitlyn; and two sons, Cody and Connor.

In 2001, he retired from the sport at 31, citing chronic knee problems. He went on to train younger wrestlers, and he also competed in kickboxing, professional wrestling and mixed martial arts.

“I am retiring,” he said at the time, “with a feeling of great gratitude for being given the chance to become a yokozuna and experience something open to only very few people.”
