A research proposal is a serious statement that addresses a researcher’s intent to conduct a study on a phenomenon and a plan about how to perform the research. Students usually undertake research under the guidance of a supervisor from faculty in tandem with assistance and supervision of other faculty members. Thus, the proposal should be a clear statement of intent that aims at elucidating the plan of research to make it feasible and acceptable for all parties concerned. The most essential characteristic of a research proposal is that it should be sufficient to present the researcher’s idea or question and expected outcomes with clarity and definition (the what). It should also make a case for the reason the researcher’s focus of study is significant and the value that it will bring to the discipline under study (the why).

A research proposal is a pre-written document which gives an overview of the research tactics. It gives a general idea of the objectives to be achieved and the ways and means to achieve it. Writing research proposal is however a challenging feat. Due to lack of clear guidance from any source, there are many substandard research proposals which are placed before evaluation committee. The researcher came across various people who had no clear understanding of the process and structure of research proposal or research design. This problem has led the researcher to develop a framework to guide the prospective researchers in framing their research design based on the following research questions.1) what is the procedure of writing the research proposal 2) what are the components of the research proposal.So, to give a clear picture about the problem the paper is divided into two parts I) Procedure of writing the research proposal II) Components of the research proposal. A research study starts with the writing of proposal which is a complete plan of the research. This requires many activities to complete. Obviously, it is quite difficult to prepare the research proposal for the beginners. So, this short article has written to help the beginners for writing proposal. This has presented some tips on writing a research proposal. This guideline further examines the procedures for writing a practical proposal by providing a roadmap on how to write a research proposal.

The Hope University Graduate School’s Regulations, Research Proposals for post-graduate Diplomas should not less than 15 pages; those for Masters should not have more than 25 pages and those for PhDs should not have more than 35 pages. References are for Postgraduate Diploma and Masters, whereas Bibliography is for PhDs. In all cases, the writing is one and half-spacing font 12 in Times New Roman. On an A4 page, with page numbers in the bottom margin right aligned. The candidate should submit five spiral bound copies to the vetting committee.

Project to boost entrepreneurship in UPE schools launched

A new project that is hoped to empower Universal Primary Education schools to manage scarcity and be more resourceful has been unveiled at Makerere University .

The Entrepreneurial Initiative for Universal Primary Education Schools Program is intended to provide training to the administrators of UPE schools on how they can use their limited resources to provide quality education to learners.

The project is funded through the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF) .

Dr. Christopher Mugimu, a professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Makerere ’s College of Education and External Studies, who is also the project lead said they will be helping UPE school managers develop enterprising skills which they can use to optimise the school resources and provide better quality education.

“We realised the government has been supporting UPE by expanding infrastructure, training teachers, and curriculum reforms but still a lot remains to be done in terms of ensuring a good learning environment,” he said.

“We believe that we can get better results from UPE schools if the managers can be helped to become more enterprising by optimizing the little resources they have.”

Dr. Badru Musisi from the Department of Foundation and Curriculum Studies at the School of Education said over the past 27 years, despite the government investing trillions of shillings to boost learning in primary schools, not much has changed in terms of school management.

“Because of that, the same challenges have persisted; schools don’t have sufficient space, they have no water and hygiene services, they don’t have food and the environment is not enabling for pupils with disabilities,” he said.

Dr. Nicholas Itaaga who represented Prof Anthony Mugagga, the Principal of the College of Education and External Studies said a lot needs to be done to combat the high dropout rates in primary schools.

Dr. Itaaga said when he was doing his PhD thesis on UPE in Eastern Uganda, he established that only about 37% of the pupils joining P1 were making it to P7, while the majority of the pupils were dropping out to join their parents in farms.

Dr. Hajjat Kuluthum Nabunya, the Officer Education Services KCCA also emphasized this trend, noting that the retention rate of UPE schools in Kampala, like those in rural schools is still alarmingly low.

“Children that are supposed to be in primary schools are the ones you see vending goods on the streets and doing housework at home. Therefore, the government needs initiatives like this,” she said.

On her part, Gloria Naggayi, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at Makerere University Research and Innovation Fund commended the project initiators and tasked them to follow through and ensure that they have positive results by the end of the year.

The number of primary school pupils in the country has grown from 2.1 million in 1997 to over 9 million today.

During the teachers’ retreat at the State House in 2017, President Museveni promised to increase the salaries of Science teachers. However, his directive was only implemented in 2021. The 300 percent pay rise resulted in a graduate and Grade V teachers’ pay increase to Shs4 million and Shs3m, up from Shs1.1million and Shs796,000 respectively. This increase, however, meant that their counterparts, the Arts Teachers, did not receive a pay increase. The teachers, under their umbrella organization, Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), petitioned the president to increase the salaries of the Arts teachers, arguing that the disparities would affect motivation of other teachers, but government is yet to act on this. This policy decision has sparked discussions surrounding its implications for educational equity, teacher morale, and the broader dynamics within secondary schools.

It is against this background that researchers from the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) have set out to study the impact of differential salary increments on secondary school teachers in Uganda.

Speaking during the launch of the project study, the Principal Investigator, Ms. Nuluyati Nalwadda said the study seeks to analyze the impact of differential salary increments on secondary school teachers, examine the psychological effects, attitudes, and perceptions of science and arts teachers, understand the potential implications for teacher motivation, job satisfaction, and service delivery, and also provide valuable insights to inform policy discussions and interventions. Ultimately, this research aims to improve the overall quality of education for students by addressing these critical factors in teacher effectiveness and well-being.

The Principal of CEES, Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga, congratulated the research team upon winning the MAK RIF grant and for their dedication and commitment to enhancing education outcomes. He urged them to ensure they publish their findings, make new research connections, apply for new grants, and engage the Ministry of Education and Sports. He advised the research team to study the different categories of schools, gender and the effect of these disparities on families. He asked them to be thorough in their research and consider all possible implications. He informed staff that the college had dedicated some resources to help advance research in the different schools. He emphasized the importance of this research in shaping future educational policies.

Ms. Harriet Adong, who represented the Chair of the Grants Management Committee, Prof. Fred Masagazi, urged the staff to use the grant resources for the purpose the funds were meant for. She encouraged them to continue applying for grants, saying the sixth call for RIF would soon come out.

She also called for timely accountability of funds and adherence to the grant guidelines. She stressed the importance of documenting the research processes and sharing findings with the public to ensure transparency and foster collaboration within the scientific community.

The Deputy Principal, Prof. Ronald Bisaso, also congratulated the team and thanked RIF for the generous support in funding their research project. He also emphasized the importance of continuing to strive for excellence in research and innovation. Citing the 49 RIF grants that college staff have won over the last 5 years, Prof. Bisaso called for more collaboration among staff. “We hope the results of the study will inform government policy, grow larger research teams, and contribute to the development of the country,” he said. The project launch was also attended by the Dean School of Distance and Life Long Learning, Dr. Harriet Nabushawo and the Head of the Department of Adult and Community Education, Dr. Stella Achen who congratulated the research team upon winning the grant.

Over 600 awarded UBTEB certificates

Over 600 students of Makerere University Centre for Lifelong Learning and Makerere University Jinja Campus have graduated with diplomas and Certificates from the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB).

“This academic achievement has launched your real beginning in higher education academics and career growth. For those who had challenges with Advanced Level as a prerequisite for University or academic progression, the diploma comes handy and will enable you to now register for your desired degree course,” Prof. Mugagga said.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony on Feb 3, 2024, at Makerere University Yusuf Lule Auditorium, Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga, the Principal of the College of Education and External Studies, where the Centre for Lifelong Learning is housed, said the college seeks to address all education levels including tertiary Education, thus the formation of CLL, which caters for those people who may not have been able to join mainstream university education.

Prof. Mugagga said the university is trying to reduce school dropouts by offering UBTEB courses, respond to the government’s call for science education in Uganda and also address the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG4) which calls for education for all.

He cautioned the graduands against reckless behavior which could lead to sickness and early death. “Be very cautious and protective of your lives. You have one life; therefore, you cannot afford to waste it. Hold your life very preciously and jealously.”

Mr. Geoffrey Kawanguzi, the Deputy Executive Secretary, admonished educational institutions against illegally awarding qualifications to students.

Mr. Kawanguzi, said many institutions are hoodwinking students and awarding them certificates and diplomas which are not recognized by the government.

Mr. Kawanguzi urged parents to be cautious while selecting higher institutions and to check that the institution qualifies to provide national exams.

“Before you pay school fees to an institution where you want to take your child, first ask whether that institution offers national exams. Certificates offered by illegal Institutions end in that school, you cannot take them anywhere,” Mr. Kawanguzi said as he conferred 613 students from the university’s main campus and Jinja campus with national certificates and diplomas in technical and business education.

Students received National diplomas in Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Planning and Management, Business Administration and Management, Civil Engineering, Procurement, Electrical Engineering and Logistics, among others.

Mr. Kawanguzi said it is only UBTEB national exams that are recognized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).

He encouraged graduands to make good use of the knowledge they have acquired from their respective disciplines to develop their communities and create job opportunities for their communities.

Prince Immanuel Oluka, a graduand of a diploma in Civil Engineering, said he doesn’t regret taking up the course because he has acquired the necessary skills to go out and address world challenges.

“We have been doing real life projects which are hands-on, even now there is a site we are working on. We are confident we can go for government contracts of constructing buildings and roads,” Oluka said.

Risper Atwine Twinomugisa, a graduand of a national diploma in Architecture, said she has specialized in drafting and drawing plans for houses and her future is bright with the skills at hand.

RESEARCH METHODS, MANAGEMENT AND THESIS

The course is about the processes of obtaining, interpreting and using information for effective research for development in Africa. It covers research methods, principles and applications to socio-environmental and economic issues including ethical and resource implications of research strategies, specific and practice-based knowledge of research techniques, and an ability to evaluate their appropriateness to particular research settings and objectives; an appreciation of the linkages between empirical research and theoretical and substantive issues within social, economic, environmental and agricultural studies; formulation of research problems and testing of hypotheses; and methods for the dissemination and effective presentation of results. It aims to encourage students to appreciate their responsibilities to society and the scientific community as researchers.  Combining research and development, working for and with rural people, and making a real difference to the future requires special skills and approaches in both planning and managing research and in actually doing it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Objective:   To equip students with the tools and skills for problem identification and proposal development, and subsequently for thesis writing in agricultural and applied economics. Specifically, the students will be able to:

  • Know how to identify a research problem;
  • Generate appropriate objectives and hypotheses;
  • Develop appropriate research methods to address the objectives;
  • Acquire knowledge of relevant data collection methods and analytical skills; and
  • Apply principles of writing good reports

By the end of the course, the students will:

  • Have acquired an understanding of the role of effective research for development
  • Be able to explain systematically and illustrate essential components of the research process
  • Develop a range of research tools (qualitative and quantitative) relevant for social, environmental and agricultural economists engaged in a variety of research and development efforts
  • Have a thorough grounding in the scientific approach to research
  • Have acquired skills required in the management and processing of data including commonly used computer packages (for example SPSS, STATA)
  • Be able to apply the acquired qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques used to organize data into some meaningful form
  • Be able to undertake postgraduate research project for their thesis.

Ucc three minute thesis competition 2024.

Are you a doctoral researcher who wishes to develop as a confident research communicator by sharing your research with a diverse audience?

UCC’s annual Three Minute Thesis competition is now accepting video submissions from postgraduate researchers, with the winner representing UCC at the national Irish Universities Association (IUA) Three Minute Thesis finals in the 2024/25 academic year.

The Office of Vice President for Research & Innovation, and the Dean of Doctoral Studies, now invite submissions from current UCC doctoral students.

How to enter? 

  • Visit our website  and read the competition guidelines.
  • Create a three-minute video file from a static slide with audio.
  • Enter your details and upload your video file using the submission form .
  • The deadline for competition entries is 5pm on Friday May 31st, 2024.

Dr Orla Lynch , Dean of Doctoral Studies, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for students to share their research with the UCC community, and it also gives them the opportunity to refine their presentation skills in preparation for their viva voce examination."
