Short Description:

Adding to the set of OpenSesame toolbox items to use hardware developed by the University of Groningen, faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, department of Research Support, in OpenSesame.

Code Written by Eise Hoekstra and Mark M. Span, Maintained by Mark M. Span

Start OpenSesame Open the console (ctrl-D) of OpenSesame, and type:

and then, if this results in success, close OpenSesame, and open it again.

If all went well, the plugins are now available in your toolbox.

EVTPLUGINS

Tactile Stimulator.

The tactile stimulator is a device that can be used to administer unpleasant tactile feedback to a subject.

LooksLike

This maximum value of the applied current is 5 mA, which is reached when a byte with value 255 (being 100%) is sent to the Tactile Stimulator. When a 0 is sent, the current will be 0 mA. This value can (and should) be limited by a careful calibration procedure!

When using the Tactile Stimulator the first thing to do is to run a calibration. This will limit the current send to the subject to a maximum, that is being calibrated to the subjective experience of the subject.

You do so by dragging the plugin into you experiment. The configuration pane looks like this:

Calib

Running this plugin in the ‘calibration’ mode (as seen above) will lead to the view below:

CalibScreen

Clicking (with the mouse) on the bar in the middle of the screen will change the values for the maximum current to be used in the experiment. The newly chosen values are readable in the green field on this screen.

Pressing the red “Test” button will administer this current to the subject. The calibration procedure will entail a steadily increasing current, and getting feedback from the subject on the subjective experience. The shock should probably be annoying, and should definitely not hurt. After each “Test” shock, a pause of 8 seconds will start, with the button turning blue. During this pause no test shock can be administered. This is to prevent accidental repetitive shocks.

When the calibration value is acquired, the green “OK” button can be pressed, and the calibration value is accepted. Your task will now continue.

Dragging a second “shock” plugin to the task, will enable the administering of shock upto the calibration value to your subject. The calibration screen in “shock” mode will look like this:

Shock

Main thing to note here is (next to the selection of the actual device: “Productname”) is the activation of the ‘Percentage’ field. This field can be filled with a number between 0 and 100, and is used as a index, leading to a shock to be administered to the subject, with a current that is defined as a percentage of the calibration value.

So if the calibration led to the selection of a value of 2.5mAh (50%), setting the “Percentage” field to e.g., 30% will lead to a shock with a current of 30% of the calibration value of 2.5mAh !

The plugin will not allow fast repetitions of the shocks, as they usually are not what the researcher wants (or at least should want). The default minimum ISI (inter-shock-interval) is 1 second.

Behavioral & Social Sciences Research Program

The Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) Research Program supports basic and applied BSS research to promote oral health, to prevent oral diseases and related disabilities, and to improve management of craniofacial conditions, disorders and injury. The BSS research program views oral health as one component of a larger system of health and well-being, and encourages both basic and applied research that incorporates other aspects of health and well-being that contribute to oral health. This view of oral health as a component of general health builds on the Surgeon General’s report on oral health in America (2000).

Health Behaviors Research

Basic health behaviors research clarifies how health behaviors, including oral health behaviors, develop and are maintained across the lifespan. Applied health behaviors research develops and tests interventions that promote oral health. Interventions may target prevention of oral disease, or appropriate treatment for an existing oral or craniofacial condition, disease or injury. Interventions may target a general, specific or clinical population. Development and testing of community-wide or public health interventions to promote health and oral health are also encouraged.

Health Services Research

Health services research is the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately health and well-being. Its research domains are individuals, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations. (Lohr & Steinwachs, 2002). The NIDCR supports health services research that falls within the NIH mission.

Implementation Science

Implementation Science Research is the scientific study of methods to promote the integration of research findings and evidence-based interventions into dental/oral/craniofacial health care practice and policy. "Intervention" means any practice, policy, tool, strategy, or combination designed to improve dental/oral/craniofacial health outcomes. The NIDCR has particular interest in:

  • Developing and testing implementation strategies that identify, understand, and overcome barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up and sustainability of specific evidence-based interventions, tools, policies, and guidelines.
  • Developing and testing strategies to “de-implement” or reduce the use of interventions, tools, policies, and guidelines that are no longer supported by current evidence, have never been evidence-based, have been prematurely widely adopted, and/or are harmful or wasteful.

Business Support System

Explanation

BSS (Business support system) is a collective term for systems that support business operations of telecommunications service providers (carriers). It manages customer information and billing information, and supports such business practices as handling of applications for services, opening of lines, billing of charges and responding to inquiries. The systems are often built separately for each type of telecommunications service including voice, data, fixed communications and mobile communications.

With competition in the telecommunications service industry becoming intense over recent years, the service providers are required to add or expand their services in a short period of time. Accordingly, they demand that BSS can build systems more efficiently and flexibly respond to system expansions. In addition, as diversification of services have created the problem that their systems have become too complicated and bloated, there is a growing need for integrated and optimized BSS, which is currently offered separately for each type of telecommunications service. Attempts are also being made to analyze the huge customer information managed by BSS and utilize the results in developing new services.

Bristol Stool Scale as a Determinant of Hepatic Encephalopathy Management in Patients With Cirrhosis

Affiliation.

  • 1 Virginia Commonwealth University and Central Virginia Veterans Healthcare System, Richmond, Virginia, USA .
  • PMID: 34738545
  • PMCID: PMC8816826
  • DOI: 10.14309/ajg.0000000000001550

Introduction: Bowel movement (BM) frequency is used to titrate lactulose for hepatic encephalopathy (HE). However, stool consistency using the Bristol stool scale (BSS, 0-7) is often ignored.

Methods: The study included pre-BSS and post-BSS cohorts. BSS was incorporated into decision-making after training in outpatients with cirrhosis. Two to 3 BMs/d and BSS 3-4 were considered normal, whereas the rest were considered high or low; concordance between the metrics was evaluated. Medication changes and 6-month admissions were compared between this group (post-BSS) and a comparable previous group (pre-BSS). Concordance and regression analyses for all-cause admissions and HE-related admissions were performed, and comparisons were made for HE-related medication stability. In the longitudinal analysis, an outpatient group seen twice was analyzed for BSS and BMs.

Results: In the post-BSS cohort, 112 patients were included with only 46% BSS and BMs concordance and modest BSS/BMs correlation (r = 0.27, P = 0.005). Compared with a pre-BSS cohort (N = 114), there was a lower 6-month total (4% vs 0.36%, P < 0.001) or HE-related admission (1% vs 0.12%, P = 0.002). Regression showed model for end-stage liver disease (odds ratio [OR]: 1.10, P = 0.003) and pre-BSS/post-BSS (OR: 0.04, P < 0.001) for all-cause admissions and HE (OR: 3.59, P = 0.04) and preera/postera (OR: 0.16, P = 0.02) for HE-related admissions as significant. HE medication regimens were more stable post-BSS vs pre-BSS (32% vs 20%, P = 0.04), which was due to patients with BSS > BMs (P = 0.02). In the longitudinal analysis, 33 patients without medication changes or underlying clinical status changes were tested 36 ± 24 days apart. No changes in BSS (P = 0.73) or BMs (P = 0.19) were found.

Discussion: BSS is complementary and additive to BM frequency, can modulate the risk of readmissions and stabilize HE-related therapy changes in outpatients with cirrhosis, and could help personalize HE management.

Discover OSS and BSS solutions from Microsoft

Learn about OSS (operations support systems) and BSS (business support systems) and explore how these systems help telcos streamline processes, increase agility, and drive growth.

What are OSS and BSS in telecommunications?

OSS (operations support systems) and BSS (business support systems) are critical IT systems that support a wide variety of telecommunications services. Made up of a collection of hardware and software tools, these systems are the foundation of the telecommunications industry. While OSS and BSS serve different purposes in different areas of telecommunications, both systems help telecom organizations streamline day-to-day processes, boost productivity, and overcome an array of industry challenges.

Keep reading to learn more about these critical telecom systems, understand the differences and similarities between the two, and explore how BSS and OSS solutions can help telcos accelerate growth, optimize 5G network performance, and increase revenue.

What is OSS?

OSS, which stands for operations support systems or operational support systems, is a collection of computer programs designed to help providers monitor, analyze, and manage telecom networks. As the name suggests, OSS refers to hardware and software tools used on the operations side of a telecommunications network, including computers, servers, routers, and other core components. OSS consists of the actual network infrastructure as well as the software used to control the network.

OSS enables telecom organizations to oversee a variety of operational functions, such as:

  • Network inventory
  • Fault management
  • Service provisioning
  • Configuration
  • Service assurance
  • Network planning

Vital to any mobile network, OSS is a critical component of the network architecture. It allows mobile operators to remotely manage and monitor day-to-day operations, maintenance issues, and activities across the entire network, all from one central location. The system records and captures all network information and presents the data in an easy-to-read format. Engineers, developers, and other technical employees typically manage operations support systems for telecommunications providers.

What is BSS?

BSS, short for business support systems, refers to the assortment of software programs that help telecom organizations manage and streamline all customer-facing activities. These systems cover the business side of telecom as opposed to the technology side. Sometimes referred to as a business interface, BSS enables easy interactions between telecommunications providers and customers—from ordering services to resolving billing issues to upgrading subscriptions.

BSS allows telcos to oversee and simplify a wide range of business and customer-related activities, including:

  • Customer orders
  • Subscriptions
  • Customer notifications
  • Service fulfillment
  • Revenue management
  • Product marketing
  • Customer relationship management (CRM)

Because these systems impact the overall customer experience, they’re essential to the success of modern telecommunications organizations. Effective BSS solutions help telcos simplify workflows, monitor service quality, and resolve customer issues quickly. Telco professionals who specialize in customer management and other business activities typically manage and gain insights from business support systems.

What’s the difference between OSS and BSS?

Operations support systems and business support systems are both essential for telecommunications providers, and these systems often work together to help telcos improve efficiency and boost revenue. However, there are a few key differences between the two. To put it simply, OSS covers the operations and network side of the telco, while BSS covers the business and customer side.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of OSS and BSS:

Dynamic duo: Why OSS and BSS work better together

While OSS and BSS cover different areas of the business, telcos often use these systems in tandem to improve end-to-end telecommunications services. Together, these two pillars of telco allow businesses to drive efficiently, provide uninterrupted service, improve security, engage customers, and increase revenue.

Operations support systems and business support systems tap into cloud computing, automation tools, and analytics to streamline functions across the entire telecom organization—including operations and customer activities. When telcos implement and use OSS and BSS together, it allows them to easily connect customers with reliable technology solutions.

Plus, because customer issues and network problems often go hand in hand, it makes sense for these two systems to work in unison. By using OSS and BSS jointly, telecom businesses can overcome industry challenges, provide reliable network service, and elevate customer experiences.

How to find the right BSS and OSS solutions for your business

If you want to drive efficiency across your organization, it’s important to pinpoint and implement OSS and BSS solutions tailored to meet your telco’s unique needs. Search for systems that allow you to:

  • Simplify telecom workflows and achieve operational efficiencies.
  • Gain access to customer and operational insights that help you monitor business performance, predict outcomes, and make informed decisions to fuel growth.
  • Create a data-driven culture with telecommunications business intelligence.
  • Build a hyper-connected business through industry-tailored cloud solutions .
  • Streamline processes with augmented reality, virtual reality, IoT, and other smart technologies.
  • Empower your workforce with tools that promote collaboration and boost productivity.
  • Deploy next-gen networks to improve network efficiency and reliability.
  • Help protect customer and business data on a trusted, secure cloud platform.
  • Increase agility, accelerate time to market, and reduce operation costs through automated processes that support workloads.
  • Drive digital transformation for your network and allow your organization to prepare for the future.
  • Optimize 5G network performance and create new revenue streams through innovative edge and IoT services.
  • Scale your operations with cloud solutions designed to grow with your business.

Before you implement new OSS and BSS solutions for your business, it’s important to evaluate your current processes. If your existing systems aren’t working, new BSS and OSS solutions won’t automatically fix these issues. Once you take time to analyze and simplify your operational and business activities, then you can implement a new system—or migrate your current processes to an automated, cloud-based OSS and/or BSS solution.

The impact of 5G networks on BSS and OSS

Thanks to the ongoing emergence of new technologies, the telecom industry is constantly adapting, evolving, and looking to the future. Today, one major development is having a particularly significant impact on the telecommunications world—5G. While this fifth-generation network is opening a world of new possibilities for telecommunications, it’s also increasing telcos’ reliance on OSS and BSS.

The transition to 5G OSS and BSS

Telecom infrastructure providers across the globe are transitioning to 5G networks, which are about 100 times faster and offer 1,000 times greater bandwidth than 4G. Tapping into this incredible 5G network speed, telcos will have the power to capture more customers, create new revenue streams, and drive growth.

In the age of 5G, telcos have an opportunity to take on a leading role in the digital economy. Telecom organizations are empowered to expand and become digital service providers for a wide range of industries, including autonomous driving, spatial computing, immersive e-commerce, and the metaverse—a 3D virtual reality space where people can connect socially and interact with other users. While the metaverse is currently a work in progress, 5G network architecture—and eventually 6G—will help drive the creation and growth of these virtual worlds.

In this shifting landscape, 5G BSS and OSS will be essential for telcos—even more so than with previous network generations. With the power of 5G and the right systems in place, telecom organizations have an opportunity to scale their business, engage more customers, and increase revenue.

Maximize your 5G network investments

If your telecom organization is running legacy OSS and BSS, you won’t get the most out of your 5G network investments. To reap the valuable benefits of 5G network coverage, it’s critical to embrace modern BSS and OSS solutions and migrate existing systems to the cloud. These end-to-end cloud systems will allow you to monitor and optimize your end-to-end operational and business functions—from network performance, inventory, and fault management to billing issues, new product delivery, and customer experiences.

Explore OSS solutions and BSS solutions

As the role of telecommunications in the digital economy continues to expand and evolve, it’s more important than ever for telcos to drive digital transformation and accelerate innovation. Frequently asked questions about OSS and BSS

What is oss (operation support system).

In telecommunications, OSS (operations support systems) is a collection of hardware and software tools designed to help organizations monitor, analyze, and manage telecom networks. As the name suggests, OSS focuses on the operations side of telecommunications—and these systems consist of the actual network infrastructure as well as the software used to control the network. OSS enables telecom organizations to oversee a variety of operational activities, such as network performance, inventory, fault management, and service provisioning.

What is BSS (Business Support System)?

BSS (business support systems) refers to the set of software programs that allow telecommunications organizations to manage and streamline all customer-facing activities—from ordering services to resolving billing issues. These systems help telcos optimize a wide range of business and customer-related activities, including billing, customer orders, subscriptions, notifications, service fulfillment, revenue management, and customer relationship management (CRM). Because BSS impacts the overall customer experience, these systems are essential to the success of modern telecommunications organizations.

What is the difference between OSS and BSS?

While OSS (operations support systems) and BSS (business support systems) are both essential for telcos, these systems focus on different areas of the telecommunications business. OSS covers the operations and network side of the organization, allowing engineers and other technical employees to remotely analyze and control all network connections and core components. On the other hand, BSS covers the customer side, and it helps telco professionals streamline customer interactions and gain insights to boost engagement and elevate experiences. Although they cover different sides of the business, BSS and OSS work better together—and when telcos implement and connect these systems, they can improve end-to-end telecommunications services and drive efficiency.

What are OSS and BSS solutions?

OSS and BSS solutions are the platforms telcos use to overcome industry challenges, improve network efficiency, simplify business workflows, and accelerate growth. If you want to drive efficiency across your telecom organization, it’s important to pinpoint and implement OSS and BSS solutions that meet your telco’s unique needs. Look for systems that allow you to simplify telecom workflows, achieve operational efficiencies, and elevate customer experiences.

Report Scope and Market Segmentation

Market Definition

The words operations support system (OSS) and business support system (BSS) are interchangeable in the telecommunications sector. The distinction highlights the degree of abstraction that exists between network operations and network-centered business. Communications service providers support a wide range of services and functions with their OSS/BSS. The primary purposes of BSS are order capture, customer relationship management , and telecom billing, whereas the main functions of OSS are order processing, network inventory control, and network operations.

Cloud Operations Support Systems (OSS) Business Support System (BSS) Market Dynamics

  • Escalating need to minimize CAPEX and OPEX

The telecom sector offers a broad range of support services, including networking, customer profile management, and various billing management techniques, all of which have an impact on operating costs. Cloud offers CSPs the full IT infrastructure at a lower cost, allowing them to improve operations as a whole. Using the various resource tracking techniques, CSPs constantly struggle to keep track of OPEX. Telecom service providers were struggling to cut operating expenses due to the rapid introduction of new technologies. Many businesses have begun implementing cloud-based OSS BSS systems, enabling them to manage complex operations efficiently and significantly lower operational costs. The use of cloud technologies enables CSPs to offer more straightforward solutions while also lowering overall operational costs.

  • High requirement for business support system (BSS)

The requirement for business support system (BSS) solutions is always of utmost importance as they support commercial and customer-focused activities in the telecom sector and help every firm properly oversee, manage, and carry out their business operations. A business support system (BSS) supports numerous business operations, including marketing, product offerings, sales, contracts, and the delivery of goods and services, while assisting a firm or organization in securing income and quality. Cloud-native business support system (BSS) systems provide greater traffic scalability and the creation of new revenue streams. As a result, a business support system (BSS) is needed, which fosters the market's overall growth rate over the forecast period.

The telecom service providers need to adapt to new technology infrastructures and enhance their operational and business procedures due to the rapid pace of innovation. In this fiercely competitive environment, it is challenging for the telecom businesses to concurrently plan, develop, and implement new infrastructures while concentrating on their core skills. As a result, there is a huge requirement of skilled professionals that are able to quickly learn and adapt accordingly. However, the dearth of skilled personnel is expected to obstruct market growth over the forecast period.

  • Data privacy concerns

The need to protect data privacy is becoming more difficult as the telecom industry's user base grows. As more data is collected and online transactions are carried out in the telecom business, worries about the security of data and payments are increasing. Consumers must disclose their financial information in order to receive value-added services. The RISE Expo gives participants the chance to show off their research and creative projects. A record 448 posters were presented in person on topics ranging from Brexit to breast cancer treatment. (An additional 55 posters were shared online, allowing students on Northeastern’s 13 global campuses to partake.)

Jethro Lee, a data science and psychology major, focused his research on a little-studied sport: field hockey. His study looked at success probabilities in the sport based on factors such as whether the team was playing at home or whether the shot occurred after a penalty corner.

“My supervisor and I believe that field hockey is very underrepresented in literature, especially in regards to sports literature,” Lee said. “A lot of empirical studies generally focus on sports like basketball or baseball. We want to collaborate with coaching staff to tailor our findings to areas that are most important for improvement and feedback for players and coaches.”

Lee collected data from Northeastern’s field hockey website for the study. His goal is to use this data to eventually spearhead the development of a machine-learning model to help inform decisions on the field hockey field.

Paul Ambarus, a health sciences student, presented research he’s done in his job at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, looking at ovariectomized pigs as a way to study women’s heart health. Removing the ovaries of a pig creates a model to study the postmenopausal cardiovascular system of a human woman.

Amabarus’ team removed the ovaries from four young pigs. He then studied the heart tissue and found an increased expression of a certain protein that the team hypothesized was due to a lack of protection of estrogen, indicating that certain sex hormones produced by the ovaries may have a protective effect on the heart.

“That’s something we’ll be looking into in the future,” Amabarus said. “Seeing these differences helps us understand what is going on at a very micro level, specifically in menopausal women that ended up having heart disease.”

Many of the presentations focused on complex science, but others dealt with public health issues. Sarah Abukwaik, a health sciences major, spent months studying the role religion has on people’s sexual health education and attitudes toward sexuality. She surveyed over 80 people and ranked their level of religious devotion with their knowledge of sex education-related issues and their views on sexuality.

Ultimately, she found that being religious does not mean a person has a higher or lower level of sex education, but religious beliefs do influence people’s decision-making about sex.

“There has been somewhat of a cultural battle between religion and sex education,” she said. “That’s why you’ll see mostly across the nation abstinence-only programs even today, and not a standard form of sexual education curriculum.

Matthews Arena filled with people attending the RISE Expo 2024.

“There is definitely a need to not only to reform our sex education so we do have more of a standard, but also bridge the connection between religion and sex education, so that it does not seem because it isn’t as incompatible as we believe it to be.”

But not all the research focused on STEM . Naz Ozturk, a theater and communication studies major, presented research on the TV show “Suits” and the male friendships presented in it.

“When I was first watching ‘Suits,’ I thought it was really, really interesting how it’s centered around male characters,” Ozturk said. “And two of the male characters, Louis and Harvey, they’re completely at odds with each other … whereas Harvey and Mike (get along).”

Ozturk decided to look into what this says about masculinity in the West. To do so, she analyzed seasons one and two of the show, taking notes on interactions between the male characters. She also reviewed literature on research on what traits are considered masculine versus feminine and developed cognitive schemas to group the traits together.

What she found was conflict between Louis and Harvey often occurred when Louis was presenting a more feminine trait such as negotiating. On the flip side, Mike had many masculine traits that made Harvey more keen toward him.

“I found out Harvey is this kind of idyllic male persona that we would see in the West,” Ozturk said. “He sees parts of himself in Mike (who’s also) competitive, self-serving, competent and very intelligent. Whereas even though Louis is also intelligent, and self-serving, he presents a lot more feminine traits. Every time they have a spat, it’s because Louis is showing female behavior.

“My conclusion that I came to is that our gender presentation mediates the formation of friendships. … We are so addicted to media nowadays but then looking deeper and seeing what it says about our society is really big. It’s super significant.”

Utah Governor’s Medal Given to Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS, for Outstanding Research and Leadership

Read Time: 3 minutes

Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS

Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS , chief scientific officer and executive director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (the U) and professor of Population Health Sciences at the U, has been awarded the 2024 Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology .

The prize recognizes the recipient’s distinguished service and meaningful contributions to science in the state of Utah.

“This award celebrates Ulrich’s exceptional leadership abilities at Huntsman Cancer Institute,” says Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. “Utah is proud to be home to such a world-renowned institution, and we commend her in her research efforts toward curing cancer.”

Ulrich, a native of Germany, first came to Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute a decade ago. As a renowned expert in cancer research with more than 450 scientific publications, she has led Huntsman Cancer Institute’s research teams to an “exceptional” national rating, the highest rank achievable from the National Cancer Institute.

“It’s a very special honor to be recognized by the governor of Utah for science and technology, which we know are critical for accelerating our joint progress in this world, and in our state,” says Ulrich. “The award is not really about me but the amazing cancer research teams at Huntsman Cancer Institute, where we bring together people of diverse backgrounds to collaborate in ways that are unique and impactful in the service of our patients, our state, and our region.”

“Her relentless dedication and drive to push boundaries through collaboration has shaped and will continue to drive the landscape of innovation in Utah and beyond.”

Infancy is the age at which someone is most likely to live in a homeless shelter. If that sounds surprising, consider that poverty is the main reason families with young children become homeless. Given the high costs of childcare across the country, often parents leave the workforce to care for their young children. That loss of income plus the cost of housing can sometimes leave families without a home.

Marybeth Shinn (Vanderbilt)

To help reduce homelessness among young families, Beth Shinn is beginning a new study to test whether unconditional direct cash payments and peer support to families who are homeless will help reduce the length of shelter stays and improve other aspects of their lives.

“This study was essentially designed by lived-expertise consultants, a team of mothers who had stayed in New York City shelters with their young children. When we asked them what would help families leave a shelter most rapidly and promote family well-being, the consultants said cash and peer support,” said Shinn, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair and professor of human and organizational development at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development .

For decades Shinn has studied how to prevent and end homelessness, including in the Family Options Study , the first large-scale analysis of housing program options to end homelessness, now in its 13 th year. Supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, this study found that housing vouchers were effective in stabilizing long-term housing.

The success of housing vouchers in the Family Options study informs Shinn’s rationale for testing the efficacy of unconditional direct cash payments, guided by the assumption that families, when given the funds, will know how to best spend the money to ensure they are able to leave and stay out of homeless shelters.

Shinn is collaborating with the Women in Need shelter system, the largest non-profit family shelter system in New York City. An anonymous family foundation is supporting the study with a $785,050 grant. One hundred families with a child two years old or younger at the start of the study will receive $17,000 per year (paid twice per month) and volunteer peer support for two years. Peers are women who have also gone through the shelter system as well as the numerous processes to establish housing and secure additional resources, such as opening a bank account and finding employment.

The study will include a comparison sample of 100 additional families at the WIN shelter who will only receive $600 per year without specialized peer support.  Both groups will get the usual care of the shelter system. Families who could have qualified for the study but aren’t in either the active or comparison groups will make up a larger passive group.

The primary outcome of the study will be to see whether recipients of the larger cash payments have shorter stays in the homeless shelters compared to the other two groups.

“We expect not only shorter stays in homeless shelters, but based on the findings from the Family Options Study, we also expect reductions in distress, domestic violence, substance abuse, and food insecurity, as well as better outcomes for children,” Shinn said.

Beth Shinn teaches in the Community Development and Action M.Ed. program and the Community Research and Action Ph.D. program .
