If you’re a student searching for a way to keep your assignments organized, congratulate yourself for taking the time to set yourself up for success. Tracking your assignments is one of the most important steps you can take to help you stay on top of your schoolwork .

In this Writing Tips blog post, we’ll discuss why keeping an inventory of your assignments is important, go over a few popular ways to do so, and introduce you to our student assignment tracker, which is free for you to use.

Why Tracking Is Important

Keeping your assignments organized is essential for many reasons. First off, tracking your assignments enables you to keep abreast of deadlines. In addition to risking late submission penalties that may result in low grades, meeting deadlines can help develop your work ethic and increase productivity. Staying ahead of your deadlines also helps lower stress levels and promote a healthy study-life balance.

Second, keeping track of your assignments assists with time management by helping prioritize the order you complete your projects.

Third, keeping a list of your completed projects can help you stay motivated by recording your progress and seeing how far you’ve come.

Different Ways to Organize Your Assignments

There are many ways to organize your assignment, each with its pros and cons. Here are a few tried and true methods:

  • Sticky notes

Whether they are online or in real life , sticky notes are one of the most popular ways to bring attention to an important reminder. Sticky notes are a quick, easy, and effective tool to highlight time-sensitive reminders. However, they work best when used temporarily and sparingly and, therefore, are likely better used for the occasional can’t-miss deadline rather than for comprehensive assignment organization.

  • Phone calendar reminders  

The use of cell phone calendar reminders is also a useful approach to alert you to an upcoming deadline. An advantage to this method is that reminders on your mobile device have a good chance of grabbing your attention no matter what activity you’re involved with.

On the downside, depending on how many assignments you’re juggling, too many notifications might be overwhelming and there won’t be as much space to log the details of the assignment (e.g., related textbook pages, length requirements) as you would have in a dedicated assignment tracking system.

  • Planners/apps

There are a multitude of physical planners and organization apps for students to help manage assignments and deadlines. Although some vow that physical planners reign superior and even increase focus and concentration , there is almost always a financial cost involved and the added necessity to carry around a sometimes weighty object (as well as remembering to bring it along with you).

Mobile organization apps come with a variety of features, including notifications sent to your phone, but may also require a financial investment (at least for the premium features) and generally will not provide substantial space to add details about your assignments.

  • Spreadsheets

With spreadsheets, what you lose in bells and whistles, you gain in straightforwardness and customizability – and they’re often free! Spreadsheets are easy to access from your laptop or phone and can provide you with enough space to include whatever information you need to complete your assignments.

2. The first tab in the spreadsheet will display several premade assignment trackers for individual subjects with the name of the subject in the header (e.g., Subject 1, Subject 2). In each header, fill in the title of the subjects you would like to track assignments for. Copy and paste additional assignment tracker boxes for any other subjects you’d like to track, and color code the labels.

3. Under each subject header, there are columns labeled for each assignment (e.g., Assignment A, Assignment B). Fill in the title of each of your assignments in one of these columns, and add additional columns if need be. Directly under the assignment title is a cell for you to fill in the due date for the assignment. Below the due date, fill in each task that needs to be accomplished to complete the assignment. In the final row of the tracker, you should select whether the status of your assignment is Not Started , In Progress , or Complete . Please see the example of a template that has been filled in (which is also available for viewing in the Example tab of the spreadsheet):

4. Finally, for an overview of all the assignments you have for each subject throughout the semester, fill out the assignment tracker in the Study Schedule tab. In this tracker, list the title of the assignment for each subject under the Assignment column, and then color code the weeks you plan to be working on each one. Add any additional columns or rows that you need. This overview is particularly helpful for time management throughout the semester.

Language and Style of your Assignment

  • Did you communicate properly, clearly and coherently?
  • Use a spell checker.
  • There must be a coherent structure with the line of argument flowing logically throughout.
  • Everybody should be able to understand what you are saying - say what you have to say.
  • If you quote a source, elaborate and state why you are using it.
  • Be careful when you translate names of individuals, places and organisations.
  • Instead of having to use too much punctuation – keep it simple, one fact per sentence.  Make sure you put the full stop and exclamation / question marks inside quotation marks.
  • Only use standardised abbreviation.
  • Numbers:  One to ten is written, rest you may use the number.  When you start a sentence with a number, write the number out.  Use numbers if you state time, date measurement or age. 
  • Write in the active voice e.g. The Safety Committee will actively pursue the miscreants NOT the miscreants will be actively pursued by....
  • Never use the personal form in a scientific paper.
  • Do not use an exclamation mark in a scientific paper.
  • No naive phrases such us, “let us have a look at...”
  • Each sentence must contain a verb.
  • Write brief and business-like sentences.
  • No fashionable expressions e.g. “at the end of the day”
  • Use a comma between two verbs.
  • Use double quotation marks.
  • Within a quotation, already in double quotation marks, use single quotation marks.
  • Full stop is outside the quotation marks.

Booking an appointment with an Academic Skills Instructor is beneficial at any stage of the writing process. Plan ahead and book an instructor to help you understand your assignment, create an outline, or review the first draft of your paper.

Consider how long each step will take and make a plan for when you will complete each step. Enter these mini-deadlines into your calendar or planner. See an example.

1. Understand and analyze your assignment

Spend some time to fully understand your assignment before you begin your work.

  • Analyze the assignment question: read it carefully and underline key words, terms, and concepts.
  • The length of the assignment provides clues as to how much research you need to do and the depth of the paper
  • Research requirements: number and type of sources
  • Referencing style (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.)

2. Narrow your topic

Take time to narrow your topic ; a focused topic promotes good research and strong analysis.

When you can choose your own topic, pick something that truly interests you. Browse through the syllabus, lecture and reading notes, and course readings to help you decide.

3. Do preliminary research and review course concepts

Preliminary reading helps to focus your topic. You can determine how much information is available and whether you need to change the scope of your topic.

  • Search the Trent Library Guides to find reference tools related to your discipline, including the best databases to use, relevant peer reviewed journals, good websites, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. 

4. Develop a working research question or thesis question

A research question is a starting point that expresses what you want to know about your topic and why you want to know it. A good question will help focus your research.

5. Make a research plan

The research process will consume a significant amount of time, so make sure that you leave plenty of time for this stage. Research is easier when you take the time to plan .

6. Read sources and take notes

  • Read your sources efficiently and effectively . Academic reading is difficult reading and requires you to both actively and critically read.
  • Take useful research notes. Notetaking from reading is a critical skill that aids in the research process and also distances you from your sources to help prevent plagiarism.

7. Develop a thesis and an outline

The thesis is your position about the topic and the centre around which your paper will be organized. Review how to generate a good thesis .   

An outline identifies the main sections of the paper in relation to one another and the order in which they will be discussed in the essay. Include the evidence (and citation information) that you will use to support each section. There are various ways to outline a paper.

8. Write a first draft

The first draft for most writers is a document that contains errors, rough points, and incomplete sections. This becomes the basis for thoughtful revision and a final draft.

9. Revise and edit

  • Revise the whole paper. This includes considering the structure and argumentation of the paper.
  • Edit for sentence-level errors and ensure that you are communicating your ideas clearly.

10. Proofread and check citations

Final proofreading is important for a polished finished product.

How to Start an Assignment

Getting started on an assignment or homework can often times be the hardest step. Putting off the assignment can make the problem worse, reducing the time you have to complete the task and increasing stress. By learning how to get started and overcome the urge to procrastinate, you can get your assignments done on schedule and with less stress, opening up more free time.

Restructuring Your Assignment

  • For example, you might research areas of a report that you find most interesting before moving on to other areas.
  • If your math assignment has different types of questions, try doing those that you enjoy the most before moving on to the others.
  • You might also try tackling smaller or easier tasks first so you can cross a few items off your list. Seeing that you've already made progress may help you feel motivated to continue.

Step 2 Start working for five minutes.

  • Promise yourself that you will meet your goal of working for five minutes on the assignment.
  • Once you get started, you may find that you don't want to stop working. Otherwise, you can take a break and come back to the assignment, knowing you're at least five minutes closer to finishing than you were before.

Step 3 Break up your time.

  • Try to set reasonable periods of time that you know you can meet. For example, you might set aside two hours on a Friday to dedicate to your assignment. If you don't have that much time all at once, try to carve out a few 20- or 30-minute blocks.
  • You may or may not wish to continue working after your time limit has gone by.
  • Have a realistic understanding of how fast you can write and plan your schedule accordingly.

Step 4 Get started.

  • It can help to read the assignment as soon as you get it and then ask any questions you might have.
  • If you're not sure if you understand the assignment, try rewriting it in your own words or explaining it to someone else. If you find you can't or have a lot of questions, you may need more information.
  • You should have an overview of the assignment, understand the main task, and understand the technical and stylistic requirements.
  • Look for important words in the instructions to understand the assignment. These words might include define, explain, compare, relate, or prove.
  • Keep your audience in mind and write a paper that would best deliver information to them.

Step 6 Make sure your goals are manageable.

  • Goals that are too big or not well defined can be difficult to start working towards.
  • Smaller and well defined goals can seem easier to achieve than larger ones.
  • For example, you could break a research paper down into several smaller tasks: 1) do preliminary research, 2) write an outline, 3) draft an introduction, 4) draft body paragraphs, 5) write conclusion, 6) revise. Each of these is much more do-able on its own.

Changing Your Focus

Step 1 Change your mood.

  • You might want to go for a quick walk after working for a set amount of time.
  • Try reading a website or book that you enjoy for a few minutes after working.
  • Alternatively, try a quick burst of exercise before setting to work. Exercise releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins and can also help boost your memory. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Stay positive.

  • Instead of dreading your work, focus on how good it will feel to make progress. You won't have it hanging over your head. You can actually enjoy the weekend instead of feeling guilty.
  • Keeping your eye on long-term rewards can help you stay motivated to finish your assignment.

Step 3 Avoid procrastination while working.

  • Avoid moving your workspace constantly.
  • Don't get lost on tangential research.
  • Don't take constant breaks to get a snack.

Step 4 Create some consequences for procrastination.

  • For every hour you waste procrastinating, you can limit how much television you watch that night.
  • If you waste too much time procrastinating, you might deny yourself a favorite snack later on.

Step 5 Don't worry about perfection.

To start an assignment, try working on the most enjoyable or easiest parts of the assignment first to get the ball rolling. Keep referring back to the question and assignment brief and make sure that your structure matches what you have been asked to do and check to see if you have appropriate and sufficient evidence to support all of your points. Plans can be structured/restructured at any time during the writing process.

Once you have decided on your key point(s), draw a line through any points that no longer seem to fit. This will mean you are eliminating some ideas and potentially letting go of one or two points that you wanted to make. However, this process is all about improving the relevance and coherence of your writing. Writing involves making choices, including the tough choice to sideline ideas that, however promising, do not fit into your main discussion.

Eventually, you will have a structure that is detailed enough for you to start writing. You will know which ideas go into each section and, ideally, each paragraph and in what order. You will also know which evidence for those ideas from your notes you will be using for each section and paragraph.

Once you have a map/framework of the proposed structure, this forms the skeleton of your assignment and if you have invested enough time and effort into researching and brainstorming your ideas beforehand, it should make it easier to flesh it out. Ultimately, you are aiming for a final draft where you can sum up each paragraph in a couple of words as each paragraph focuses on one main point or idea.

More , as prompted by  Step 4 , individuals confront and admit their flaws. This recognition isn’t just for us but also extends to others and, most crucially, to a Higher Power . This emphasis on a Higher Power 12-step programs greatly stress surrender to and daily communication with a Higher Power. Having trust in something greater than yourself is considered essential for returning sanity in the unmanageable life of an addict. This can be a traditional deity, a spiritual entity or a social one such as th… More , regardless of its traditional or non-traditional form, signifies the program’s foundational belief in the necessity of surrendering to a force greater than oneself. It’s this submission that acts as a linchpin for breaking the bonds of addiction, bringing semblance and sanity to the chaotic whirlwind that life may have become.

Step 6 doesn’t impose or demand; it encourages an internal state of readiness. Instead of asking the Higher Power to eradicate our imperfections, we position ourselves willingly, preparing to cast away self-destructive habits and attitudes. This transformation isn’t immediate; it’s a steady journey marked by patience, persistence, and the guiding hand of the Higher Power.

Interestingly, our relationship with our flaws is complicated. Often, these flaws masquerade as endearing quirks, deeply embedded in our self-identity. Yet, as we progress, the realization dawns that these very characteristics might be getting in the way of our path to recovery The process by which addicts attempt to break the hold a certain substance or behavior has on their lives. This can refer to participation in a wide variety of methods. What they all have in common, is a sense that life is improving and the addict is regaining control. More , acting against the wishes of our Higher Power. The challenge lies not just in identifying these barriers but in the genuine willingness to relinquish them. Perfection isn’t the goal here; it’s about the persistent intent and earnest effort to become better.

Inner reflection plays a pivotal role. It’s essential to approach this step with honesty, admitting when one isn’t ready to part with certain flaws, without succumbing to procrastination or self-deception. The overarching theme of Step 6 is to underscore intentionality over perfection. By actively fostering a genuine desire to shed detrimental habits, we can now set the stage for genuine transformation, ensuring that the fruits of recovery are within reach.

Focus of Step 6: The journey through the previous steps has allowed us to cultivate a sense of humility, making us more open to introspection and self-awareness. Through the prior questions and reflections, we have not only identified our shortcomings but also recognized our strengths and virtues. These positive traits are what will support and guide us as we navigate the path to recovery.

However, our approach is one of respect and submission; we aren’t making demands or setting conditions. Instead, we humbly seek assistance, understanding, and enlightenment. The questions provided are tools to further facilitate this deep introspective process, encouraging us to engage more meaningfully with our aspirations for positive change and growth.

How to Work Step 6

Venturing into Step 6 requires a holistic understanding of the journey we’ve undertaken in the previous steps, coupled with a deep desire for change. This step is encapsulated by the declaration: “Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.” It’s a journey from acceptance to readiness.

Start by revisiting the moral inventory you compiled in Step 4. Reflect on each flaw, recognizing which ones have caused the most harm to yourself and others. Remember, this is not about self-blame but about understanding and accepting these imperfections. The realization of these flaws is crucial in Step 6, as you prepare yourself for their removal.

While you have previously shared these shortcomings in Step 5 , Step 6 requires a different kind of openness: a willingness for transformation. Approach this with a mindset focused not on immediate removal but on becoming completely prepared for the eventual transformation. This internal readiness is key.

Understand that while you’re aspiring for these defects to be removed by a Higher Power, it is not about making demands or trying to hasten the process. It’s about being patient and trusting the timing of your Higher Power. The beauty of Step 6 lies in this trust and the personal growth it spurs.

One major obstacle many of us face is an attachment to certain flaws. These defects, which often camouflage as unique personality traits or “just the way I am,” need special attention. Ask yourself why you cling to these defects. Dive deep into self-reflection, considering the possibility that letting go might be in your best interest.

Always remember, the essence of Step 6 is not about achieving flawlessness but about developing a sincere and continuous intent to improve. When confronted with a defect that seems too challenging to overcome, acknowledge your current limitations but remain hopeful. Commit to revisiting this flaw with a fresh perspective in the future.

Lastly, working Step 6 is a dance between self-awareness, acceptance, and wanting to experience change. While it requires confronting uncomfortable truths, it also promises a life less burdened by the weight of these defects. Embrace the process, trusting that with genuine intent and the support of your Higher Power, transformation is not just possible but inevitable.

How step 6 helps us recover: Step 6 serves as a pivotal point in our healing process. Engaging with this step and its accompanying questions provides us with a mirror, reflecting both our flaws and the ways in which we’ve unconsciously anchored them into our lives. It pushes us to acknowledge these imperfections, not just on a surface level, but by delving into the depths of how and why we’ve held onto them for so long.

Understanding our flaws is only half the battle. Recognizing them means confronting the pain, fear, or comfort associated with them. By identifying what we desire to eliminate from our lives, we are taking a crucial step towards self-improvement.

However, acknowledgment alone isn’t enough for true recovery. The next, equally important step is actively seeking their removal. This might involve soliciting help from our Higher Power, seeking guidance from trusted individuals, or actively working on personal self-improvement strategies. Former President Donald Trump needs to arrange a $454 million bond to comply with a New York court ruling in less than a week, but the presumptive Republican presidential nominee says he can't find a company to put up the bond.

Trump's lawyers are asking an appeals court to stay the judgment, but the clock is ticking.

This is the ruling that Judge Arthur Engoron issued last month , after finding that Donald, Eric and Donald Trump Jr., along with Trump Organization employees, engaged in a decade-long conspiracy to lie about the value of their assets.

In New York, if you make money by persistently committing fraud, you owe the ill-gotten portion back to the state. In this case, Judge Engoron determined that Donald Trump made over $350 million more than he should have if he'd been honest and when you add in interest, you get to $454 million.

Why does Trump have to come up with the money now?

Trump doesn't have to actually pay that money now, but he has to get a company to make a guarantee to the court that they will pay the money if he loses his appeal. That's the bond part.

But to get a bond, you have to put up assets, and in a court filing Monday Trump lawyers said they'd approached 30 companies but that getting a bond was a "practical impossibility," because they'd need a billion dollars in cash, which they don't have.

They submitted an affidavit from an insurance executive who had testified at trial, and whom the trial judge had already discredited.

Trump says he's a billionaire. Why can't he just come up with the money himself?

Trump said during a deposition for this case, taken about a year ago, that he had plenty of cash. He said, "I believe we have substantially in excess of $400 million in cash ." And, he added, it's "going up very substantially every month."

News organizations have estimated that Trump actually has about $300 million in liquid assets — but he already had to set aside $100 million or so to put up a bond to pay the verdict in the E. Jean Carroll civil case . The rest of his money is largely tied up in buildings and golf courses, and while he could sell a property, that can't happen right away. Trump said Tuesday that would be a "fire sale," though he said many times during the trial he could always find a buyer to pay top dollar.

While Trump's political action committees have spent millions of dollars on his legal fees, they're unlikely to be of help to him in this case because of campaign finance laws .

Trump has accused the judge in the case of trying to take away his rights, posting on social media that any assets he may be forced to sell would be gone even if he ultimately wins his appeal.

That's a concern that any defendant could raise, whether they're liable for $450 or $450 million, says Adam Pollock, a former assistant attorney general in New York.

"But if you want to bond the appeal — stop enforcement of the judgment — you have to put up the full amount," he told Morning Edition . "That's what the law says. And that's a policy decision that Albany has made."

The deadline is Monday. What does Trump do if the appeals court doesn't rule his way?

He can appeal to New York's highest court and ask that court to stay the judgment. If they don't, he can ask a benefactor or he could try and stall some more until he comes into money from the upcoming sale of his social media company, or he could — though it has many disadvantages — declare bankruptcy.

But New York Attorney General Letitia James has been clear: If Trump doesn't pay, she will move to seize his assets.

"If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court," she said. "And we will ask the judge to seize his assets."

Trump's noncash assets run to $3 billion, Forbes estimates, so there's plenty of value there. The law limits the AG to seizing properties that were a part of the case, but there's about two dozen of those, everything from the Doral Golf Club to 40 Wall Street to Trump Tower. She's not limited to New York properties, though there are extra steps if she chooses to go out of state.

She could, in theory, send a sheriff or a marshal to enforce the judgment, and that brings on another legal process with many more opportunities for delay.

Can Trump be forced to pay up?

James can begin enforcement of the judgment immediately after the 30-day grace period expires next week, says Pollock. And there are several devices she can use to try to get him to pay.

For one, he says, she could serve Trump a restraining notice that would restrict his spending in other areas until he pays his bond.

"The restraining notice would say: 'Don't spend money, don't fill up your jet at the pump, until you pay the state of New York, or you'll be held in contempt of court,' " Pollock says. "And my impression is that ... Engoran, the judge here in New York, would be quick to hold him in contempt of court."

He says it's theoretically possible that James' could consider settling, especially if Trump were to write a check for something like $250 million. But short of that, he doesn't see any reason for her to proactively lower his bond, especially since she has the tools to go into banks and drain his accounts.

"The entire trial was effectively a roadmap to his financial assets," Pollock adds. "She can now send out a sheriff or a marshal of the city of New York to go walk into a financial institution holding what's known as an execution and empty his bank account short of $3,000, which is the statutory floor."

Pollock acknowledges that Trump has said he doesn't have $450 million in cash. But if he wants to stave off enforcement, "he needs to find a way to raise it."

Donald Trump is hurtling toward a Monday deadline to secure a financial guarantee on the more than $454 million he owes the state in a civil fraud lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general Letitia James.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is hurtling toward a critical deadline in his most costly legal battle to date. If the former president doesn’t come up with a financial guarantee by Monday, New York’s attorney general can start the process of collecting on the more than $454 million Trump owes the state in a civil fraud lawsuit.

Trump’s lawyers are trying to stop that from happening. They have asked a court to put collection efforts on hold while he appeals the verdict.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee tried getting a bond for the full amount, which would have stopped the clock on collection during his appeal and ensured the state got its money if he were to lose.

But more than 30 underwriters said no, Trump’s lawyers told the court. They said getting a bond for such a large sum is “a practical impossibility.”

That’s raised the possibility that New York Attorney General Letitia James could start trying to enforce the judgment as soon as Monday.

Here’s a look at what that might look like, and what it would mean for Trump’s business empire.

COULD NEW YORK REALLY SEIZE TRUMP’S ASSETS?

Yes. If Trump isn’t able to pay, the state “could levy and sell his assets, lien his real property and garnish anyone who owes him money,” Syracuse University Law Professor Gregory Germain said.

Potential targets could include properties such as his Trump Tower penthouse, Wall Street office building and golf courses. James’ office could also seek court permission to drain Trump’s bank accounts and investment portfolios, or sell off other assets like his planes, helicopters — or even his golf carts.

Seizing assets is a common legal tactic when someone can’t access enough cash to pay a civil penalty.

In a famous example, O.J. Simpson’s Heisman Trophy was seized and sold at auction to cover part of a $33.5 million wrongful death judgment. More recently, a city commissioner in Miami, Florida, fought to keep his home after a federal judge ordered it seized and auctioned off to help pay a $63.5 million judgment in a political retaliation case .

New York state seized three moving trucks in 1999 to help satisfy a $250,000 judgment against a company that ripped off customers. In 2006, the state seized a $342,000 investment account to cover part of a $2 million judgment against operators of illegal tire dumps.

COULD IT HAPPEN SOON?

Not likely. State officials can’t just padlock Trump Tower. Any attempt to collect would be done through such legal actions as liens and foreclosures. But the state could lay groundwork by subpoenaing Trump for information about his assets.

James, a Democrat, recently told ABC that if Trump can’t pay, her office “will ask the judge to seize his assets.”

WHY DOES TRUMP OWE THIS MONEY?

The state, through James’ office, sued Trump in 2022, alleging he had committed fraud for years by inflating his wealth on financial statements given to banks and insurance companies in connection with various business deals.

In February, after a 2½-month trial, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay $355 million plus interest, saying, “The frauds found here leap off the page and shock the conscience.”

Trump denies any attempt to deceive banks or anyone else about his wealth. He has said the judge’s decision and the lawsuit itself were politically motivated attempts to keep him from reclaiming the White House in 2024.

He has also argued that it is unfair to make him sell off assets or spend huge amounts buying a bond when the case is still being appealed, though a court requiring an appeal bond is fairly common in New York and other jurisdictions.

Asked Tuesday if he’s confident he can pay, Trump lashed out at what he deemed “a rigged trial by a crooked judge and a crooked attorney general.”

“We have a lot of cash and we have a great company, but they want to take it away or at least take the cash element away. Billions of dollars in value, billions of dollars in properties. But they’d like to take the cash away so I can’t use it on the campaign,” Trump said after voting in Florida’s Republican primary.

“We’ll see how the courts rule on it,” he said.

COULD TRUMP PAY IF HE WANTED?

Trump says he is worth several billion dollars, but much of it is tied up in his real estate holdings.

He reported having about $294 million in cash or cash equivalents like stocks on his most recent publicly available financial statement, but that document is outdated, covering the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021. It’s also one of the documents Engoron deemed fraudulent for exaggerating Trump’s wealth.

Since then, Trump has netted nearly $187 million from selling the lease on his Washington, D.C., hotel and the rights to manage a New York City golf course. His current cash position is unclear. During his civil fraud trial, he said he had more than $400 million in cash, but that is unverified.

Trump has other legal bills. In January, a jury ordered him to pay $83.3 million for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of sexual assault. Trump secured a $91.6 million bond this month to guarantee that judgment while he appeals.

Trump’s lawyers said freeing up cash by offloading some of Trump’s properties in a “fire sale” would result in massive, irrecoverable losses.

ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TRUMP COULD RAISE THE MONEY?

Trump could receive a financial windfall from a looming deal to put his social media company, Trump Media & Technology Group, on the stock market under the symbol DJT.

If the deal is approved at a shareholder meeting Friday, Trump would own at least 58% of the shares in the company, which runs his Truth Social platform. Depending on share price, that could be worth several billion dollars, though he might not be able to turn the stock into cash immediately.

Meanwhile, the amount Trump owes is increasing by nearly $112,000 each day due to interest. As of Tuesday, he owed the state nearly $457 million.

To obtain a bond, Trump’s lawyers said they would be required to post collateral covering 120% of the judgment.

Last month, Trump’s lawyers proposed posting a $100 million bond, but a judge in the state’s mid-level appeals court said he had to pay the full amount. Trump has appealed that decision.

COULD TRUMP DECLARE BANKRUPTCY?

Under federal bankruptcy law, enforcement of the judgment would be paused if he personally declared bankruptcy. However, he would still be personally liable if just his company, the Trump Organization, or other entities were to declare bankruptcy.

Trump has repeatedly bragged that he has never, personally, declared bankruptcy, although several of his previous companies have.

“If he can’t post a bond or meet the appellate division’s bonding requirements, then I would expect him to file bankruptcy to take advantage of the automatic stay on collection,” law professor Germain said.

“But that’s a couple of chess moves away, so we will just have to see what happens.”
