A teacherâs solid online presence is essential, and a well-written bio is a crucial part of that. In this blog, I will guide you through creating a teacher bio that effectively showcases your skills, experience, and unique qualities to potential students and employers.
In todayâs digital age, having a solid online presence is crucial for any professional, including teachers. Your teacher bio is often the first impression potential students and parents will have of you. It briefly introduces who you are as a teacher and what you have to offer.Â
Understanding Your Audience:
As a teacher, your bio is your chance to introduce yourself to potential students and showcase your unique qualifications and teaching style. But before you start writing, itâs important to consider who will read your bio. Tailoring your bio to your audience can make all the difference in capturing their attention and standing out online.
Who will be reading your bio? Your audience will likely consist of students and parents looking for a teacher to help them achieve their academic goals. They may also include fellow educators and administrators interested in your teaching methods and experience. Knowing your audience will help you understand what they are looking for in a teacher and how you can appeal to their needs and interests.
Tailoring your bio to your audience:Â
Once you have identified your audience, itâs time to tailor it to their interests and needs. For example, if you target students, highlight your experience teaching a particular subject or your success in helping students improve their grades. If your audience is parents, you should emphasize your approach to creating a positive and engaging learning environment for their children.
What do they want to know about you?
Your audience will be interested in learning about your qualifications, experience, and teaching style. They may also want to know about any special certifications or awards you have received and your educational background. Additionally, they may be curious about your teaching philosophy and how you approach different learning styles and abilities.
What strategies can be used to address the needs and interests of the individuals?
To make your bio more appealing to your audience, itâs essential to highlight the aspects of your teaching that align with their needs and interests. For example, if you know that your audience values a teacher who is passionate about their subject, you can showcase your enthusiasm for teaching and the topic you specialize in. If your audience is looking for a patient and understanding teacher, mention your experience working with diverse groups of students.
Remember always to keep your audience in mind while writing your bio. By understanding their needs and interests, you can tailor your bio to make a strong connection with them and stand out as a teacher they would want to learn from. This will help you attract potential students and build a positive reputation as an educator in the online community.
Highlighting Your Education and Experience:
Highlighting your education and experience is crucial when crafting a compelling teacher bio. This section of your bio lets you showcase your qualifications and expertise and helps you stand out in a crowded field of educators. Here are some key points to keep in mind when highlighting your education and experience in your teacher bio:
Emphasizing relevant degrees and certifications:
One of the first things potential students or parents will look for in your bio is your educational background. Make sure to highlight any relevant degrees or certifications that you have earned, as they demonstrate your commitment to your field and showcase your knowledge and skills. This includes your teaching degree, advanced degrees, or specialized certifications in a specific subject or teaching method.
Highlighting teaching experience and accomplishments:Â
In addition to your education, showcasing your teaching experience and accomplishments is essential. This can include the years you have been teaching, any awards or recognition you have received, and any notable achievements in your teaching career. This not only highlights your expertise but also shows your dedication and passion for teaching.
Including any specialized training or expertise:Â
If you have any specialized training or expertise in a particular area, include it in your bio. Itâs important to highlight these as they set you apart from other teachers and show your commitment to continuous learning and growth.

How to Make Your Education and Experience Stand Out In a Crowded Field:Â
In a competitive field like education, making your education and experience stand out is essential. One way to do this is by using specific and quantifiable examples in your bio. For example, instead of just mentioning that you have a teaching degree, you could say, âI have a Bachelorâs degree in Education from XYZ University, where I graduated with honors and received the Outstanding Student Teacher Award.â This showcases your education, highlights your achievements, and sets you apart from others.
Another way to make your education and experience stand out is through storytelling. Instead of simply listing your qualifications, share a personal anecdote or experience demonstrating your passion for teaching and how your education and experience have shaped you as an educator.
Showcasing Your Teaching Philosophy and Approach:
As a teacher, your approach to teaching is what sets you apart from others in the field. Your unique style, methods, and beliefs shape how you educate and inspire your students. While your experience and qualifications are essential, showcasing your teaching philosophy and approach in your teacher bio is equally important.
Why Itâs Important to Share Your Teaching Philosophy:Â
Sharing your teaching philosophy is essential for building trust and credibility with potential students and their parents. It allows them to understand your values, beliefs, and approach to teaching, giving them a glimpse into what they can expect in your classroom. It also helps them determine if your teaching style aligns with their childâs learning needs and goals.
How to Effectively Communicate Your Approach to Teaching:Â
Itâs essential to be clear and concise when sharing your teaching philosophy. Start by explaining your overall teaching approach, whether student-centered, inquiry-based, or project-based. Then, provide specific examples of incorporating this approach into your daily lessons and student interactions.
 Including specific examples and anecdotes:Â
One of the best ways to showcase your teaching philosophy is by sharing specific examples and anecdotes from your teaching experience. These could be stories of how you helped a struggling student overcome a challenge or incorporated a hands-on activity to engage and inspire your students. These real-life examples demonstrate your teaching approach and add a personal touch to your bio, making it more relatable and engaging for readers.
Making Your Teaching Style and Methods Clear and Appealing:Â
In addition to your philosophy, itâs essential to highlight your teaching style and methods. This could include your technology use, approach to classroom management, or strategies for differentiating instruction. Please explain how your teaching style benefits students and why it makes you stand out as an educator. Use positive and enthusiastic language to make your approach appealing and exciting to potential students and their parents.
Adding Personal Touches and Unique Qualities:
Personal touches in a teacher bio are essential because they humanize you and make you relatable to your audience. Parents and students want to know that their teacher is not just a robot spewing information but a natural person with passions, interests, and experiences that make them well-rounded educators. Including personal touches in your bio can also help build a connection with your audience and make them feel more comfortable and confident in choosing you as their teacher.
Sharing Personal Experiences and Interests That Relate to Teaching:Â
When adding personal touches to your bio, itâs essential to focus on experiences and interests related to teaching. This could include your educational journey, any challenges or obstacles you have overcome, or even a teaching method you are passionate about. Sharing these experiences can help potential students and parents understand your teaching approach and how it may benefit their childâs learning.
Highlighting Unique Qualities and Strengths That Set You Apart:Â
What makes you stand out as a teacher? Is it your ability to connect with students on a personal level? Your creativity in lesson planning? What is your passion for a particular subject? Whatever it may be, highlight these unique qualities and strengths in your bio. This will help you differentiate yourself from other teachers and show potential students and parents what makes you unique as an educator.
How to Strike a Balance Between Personal and Professional In Your Bio:Â
While personal touches and unique qualities are essential to include in your bio, balancing personal and professional is crucial. Your bio should still maintain a level of professionalism and focus on your qualifications and experience as a teacher. Avoid sharing too much personal information that may be irrelevant or unprofessional. Instead, choose personal touches showcasing your personality and educator strengths.
Tips for Writing a Strong and Engaging Bio:
Your teacher bio is often the first impression potential students and parents will have of you. Making it count is essential to crafting a solid and engaging bio. Here are some tips to help you create a bio that stands out online:
 Keep it concise and focused:
You want to provide enough information to give readers a sense of who you are and what you offer, but you want to ensure they get all the details. Stick to the most relevant and impressive aspects of your education and experience.
Use a friendly and approachable tone:Â
Your bio should be inviting and easy to connect with, like a friendly smile and an outstretched hand. This will help readers feel more connected to you and make them more likely to want to learn from you. Avoid using overly formal language or jargon that may be difficult for non-teachers to understand.
Incorporate keywords and buzzwords:
Including keywords and buzzwords in your bio can help it stand out in online searches. Think about the words and phrases your target audience will likely use when searching for a teacher. Use these keywords strategically throughout your bio.
Proofread and edit for clarity and impact:
Before publishing your bio, proofread and edit it for clarity and impact. Check for spelling or grammatical errors, and ensure that your sentences flow well and are easy to understand. You want your bio to be polished and professional.
Use a call to action to encourage further engagement:
A call to action in your bio can encourage readers to take the next step, whether contacting you for more information or booking a lesson. This can be as simple as including a link to your website or social media pages or inviting readers to contact you for more information.
Crafting a compelling teacher bio takes time and effort, but itâs worth it to make a solid first impression on potential students and parents. Following these tips, you can create a bio showcasing your unique qualities and encouraging further engagement. Remember to keep it concise, use a friendly tone, incorporate keywords, proofread for clarity and impact, and include a call to action. With a well-written bio, you can stand out in the competitive world of online teaching.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, crafting a compelling teacher bio is essential in building your online presence as an educator. It allows you to showcase your unique qualities and experiences and effectively communicate your teaching philosophy to potential students and parents. By following the tips outlined in this blog, you can create a bio that stands out and captures your audienceâs attention.

As a teacher, you are required to introduce yourself to parents and students in a professional way, and what better way to do that than through a teacher bio. A teacher bio can help build trust and credibility with parents and showcase your expertise and experience to potential employers. In this article, we will guide you on how to write a professional teacher bio that stands out and leaves a lasting impression.
Understanding the Purpose of a Teacher Bio
A teacher bio serves as an introduction to who you are as an educator. Its purpose is to give parents and students a brief summary of your background, experience, and qualifications. With a teacher bio, you can communicate your teaching style and philosophy, and highlight your unique qualities that make you a great teacher.
Introducing Yourself to Parents and Students
Your teacher bio should start with a brief introduction of yourself. Include your name, grade level, and subject you teach. You can add a personal touch by mentioning something that sets you apart from other educators, such as a hobby or interest that relates to your teaching.
For example:
Hi, my name is Emily and I teach 4th-grade science at Sunnydale Elementary School. When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me exploring the great outdoors or trying new DIY projects.
Showcasing Your Expertise and Experience
One of the main purposes of a teacher bio is to showcase your expertise and experience. Be sure to mention any relevant degrees, certifications, or accolades that prove you're well-qualified to teach. Include any professional development training you've undergone to show that you're always learning, growing, and improving as an educator.
With over 10 years of experience, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Education and am certified to teach K-6. I have also completed various professional development courses in STEM education, which have allowed me to incorporate real-world problem-solving into my lessons.
Building Trust and Credibility
As an educator, it's important to build trust and credibility with parents and students. Showcasing your human side can go a long way in helping you to achieve this. Be authentic in your teacher bio by sharing a little about who you are, what you believe in, and what motivates you as a teacher.
As a teacher, I am committed to creating a fun, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all students. I believe that every child has the potential to succeed and that as educators, it's our job to help them reach their full potential. My goal as a teacher is to inspire and empower my students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers.
Essential Elements of a Professional Teacher Bio

I believe in creating a collaborative learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring their ideas. 5 Tips for Creating a New Teacher Bio
Last week, in my new online class called Make Money Teaching DIY Classes , a student asked me:
Do you have any tips for creating a bio (one that instills confidence or actually might draw students to your class), especially when one is just starting out and may not have much teaching experience yet?
The word biography is defined as âa written account of another personâs life.â And of course, âbioâ is short for the word biography. (I guess that explains why bios are almost always written in third person and not first person⊠I always wondered about that!)
Out of curiosity, I also looked up the origin of the word Bio. The root of the word in Greek means life, and in Latin means living. So, you could think of a bio as a chance to share with your future students what in your life has lead you to the moment where you will be teaching this topic or class for them. Obviously, if you have teaching experience – share that. But if you donât, there are plenty of other things you can include.
From the Archives: Lori’s Bio, Circa 2002
Here are My Top 5 Tips for Creating a New Teacher Bio
1. Tell them your experience with the thing youâre teaching.
Letâs say youâre teaching a class on soap making. How long have you been making soap? Do you sell it? Where? Why did you start making it? If you make it for gifts, are your friends beating down your door to get it? What makes your soap recipe special?
Ex. Alana has been a soapmaker ever since 2014 when she took a class and was hooked. Her all-natural cocoa butter & mint soap is sold at quirky mom & pop shops throughout the Bay Area.
Side Note: If youâre not yet confident about WHAT youâre teaching, then itâs probably not a good idea to have strangers spend their hard earned money to learn from you. You don’t need to be a know-it-all “expert,” but be sure your recipes are thoroughly tested and your understanding of the entire process is solid before âteachingâ others.
2. Share WHY you are teaching this topic.
Enthusiasm is contagious. If you’re passionate about bath fizzies, tell us why! Let people know that ever since you learned how to make this fabulous product, your life hasnât been the same. And how you want everyone to experience that too. You can also convey your enthusiasm and passion about teaching. For me, the act of teaching is as exciting & important as what I’m teaching (this is precisely why I’ve decided to share my knowledge about teaching).
Ex. Susie is so passionate about using & making natural deodorants, that she will never buy a big-brand deodorant/antiperspirant again. More importantly, she canât wait to share her knowledge with you in this unique class.
3. Let them know about any teaching experience you’ve had.
My first real teaching experience was at The University of Hawaii as an undergrad, teaching 9 students in a program called Freshmen Seminar where everyone sat on the floor (including me). Then, to cover my tuition while in graduate school, I was awarded a teaching assistantship and taught several Public Speaking 101 labs with about 35 students each (this time, we got to sit in chairs in a real classroom). My first soap class bio briefly mentioned my experience working as a teacher and my master’s degree. It didnât have anything to do with soapmaking, but if nothing else, I felt it might give people some confidence in my teaching ability, and that helped me feel more confident.
If you’ve never had any experience teaching anyone in any capacity, just skip this one and move on to #4.
4. Add a little bit about who you are, outside of this topic & teaching.
This is your chance to let your personality shine through. You could try to keep it related, like saying that you love to garden or cook healthy meals for your family. Or, you could offer something completely unexpected and quirky like you have a pet snake! Think about what other crafty adventures you have been on that your future students might appreciate. Being authentic is an attractive quality that will hopefully pique the interest of your target audience.
5. Donât lie or exaggerate in your bio.
I know this seems like an obvious break in integrity (and it is), but artificially inflating experiences to make yourself look a little better is not uncommon. CareerBuilder.com surveyed over 2,500 hiring managers and 56% reported catching job candidates lying on their resumes. The most frequent “fib” was embellishing one’s skills or capabilities. Whether it’s stretching the truth about your teaching history or your proficiency in the chosen topic, just say no. You certainly don’t want to embarrass yourself and find your nose growing by the end of your class.
Well, I really hope these tips will help anyone trying to write a bio as a new teacher. If you find them useful, please let me know in the comments below.
And then get on out there, be yourself, and be confident in your abilities. Itâs okay to tell people the truth & say: âThis is my first time teaching a class like this, and Iâm a little nervous.â Then your big secret is out, and you can relax and enjoy the experience. To quote Zig Ziglar, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”
If youâre a good fit for teaching, youâll love it, and people (in the form of students) will be drawn to you. Iâd better end this here… I really need to go update my bio.

Teacher Autobiography Sample
When composing an educational autobiography you want to highlight your unique and important life experiences and summarize them in one or two pages.
Educators are using an autobiography in their portfolio more today than ever before, especially those in higher-education positions, such as college instructors, deans, and university professors. Many corporate trainers, teachers, superintendents, principals, or assistant principals also incorporate them into an about me page or in their job search portfolio.
Social networking in education should be an important part of your education job search. Autobiographies don’t replace a searchable LinkedIn Profile to showcase you as an educator.
Career changers also use an autobiography in their portfolio to show the reasons they are making the transition into education .
In the sample we discuss Elizabeth’s desire to be a stay-at-home mom prior to embarking on her teaching career. From this experience she gained an awareness of the needs children have and can enter the teaching field with a transformed idea of what she would like to achieve.
While writing your teacher biography, make sure you don’t include any negative details, think of the reader’s perception of what you have done.

How to Write a Short Professional Bio (With Examples and Templates)
3 key takeaways
- What a short professional bio is and where to use one
- How to write your professional bio (plus short professional bio examples and templates)
- How to use the Teal AI Resume Builder  to write a short, professional bio
Your professional bio is one of the most important things you'll write about yourself.
In a world where just about everyone is represented online in some capacity, your professional bio will often serve as your first introduction to your intended audience. It can help influence whether someone invites you to connect, interview you, or simply move on.
But how does your professional bio work in tandem with your resume to tell your unique story? And what are some short professional bio examples you can reference to craft your ownâhelping you strike the perfect balance between informative and engaging?
What is a short professional bio?Â
A short professional bio is exactly what it sounds like â a short professional biography that introduces yourself and gives a brief overview of your career and accomplishment examples . A short professional bio gives future employees, colleagues, and anyone else you're networking with a more well-rounded picture of who you are. Â
We recognize that âshortâ is a vague term and can mean many different things. But the good news is, unless you're dealing with a certain character or space limit, there is no magic length that your bio has to be. Most short bios tend to run anywhere from one to four paragraphs, but feel free to make yours whatever length you think would work best for you.Â
Your short professional bio can be displayed many different places, including but not limited to: your website, LinkedIn profile, Twitter profile, in press features, and your resume.Â
What should I include in a short professional bio?Â
Before you sit down to write your bio, it might be helpful for you to think of it as not only a bio, but also an elevator pitch for your target audience. You want to produce a compelling professional bio. Your bio should answer the question: what would you want someone who doesn't know you at all to know about your career so far?Â
Below are some thought-starters to set you up for success.Â
As a working professional
Whether you've been working for six months or 15 years, consider including these in your bio:Â
- Where you're based
- Where you're from
- What university, trade school, or bootcamp you attended (if any)
- Your current or former career titles
- Your career goals
- Relevant awards, accolades, or press features you've garnered
- Your professional experience, skills, and area(s) of expertise
- What you like to do in your spare time (personal interests, hobbies, side hustles, etc.)Â
To make sure you're providing the most relevant skills to a potential employer, use Teal's Skills Database in the free Skills Workbook  to identify your current skills and potential skills that you want to acquire. Once you've identified those, enter them into Teal's Skills Identifier.
As a student
Even if you're still in school, there's plenty of information you can include in your bio, like:Â
- What university, trade school, or bootcamp you're attending
- Your area of study or intended major
- Any clubs, teams, volunteering, or other extracurriculars you're a part ofÂ
- Any internships you've completed
- Your career goalsÂ
- Your availability
How to write a short professional bio
If you're ready to begin writing your professional bio, we commend you. We've listed a few things here that you might find helpful to consider, but again, there is no steadfast formula. You can feel free to follow or ignore these suggestions however you see fit.Â
â Choose your voice
You have the option to write your bio using either first or third person. When using first person, you will be utilizing the pronouns "I, me, and my". When using third person, you would refer to yourself using your name and preferred pronouns.
Ultimately, the choice is yours. However, as a general rule, using third person is typically considered more formal, while using first person is more casual.
First person example: "I am a bestselling author. My work has been published in XYZ publication."
Third person example: "Zane Smith is a bestselling author. His work has been published in XYZ publication."
If you want to have multiple versions of the same bio on hand, like a first person version and a third person version, our tools are designed to make this easy for you. Write as many versions of your bio as you need and rotate which one you use in which situation as your career evolves.Â
Generate your professional bio with AI
You can also use our AIÂ Resume Builder to generate multiple versions of your short professional bio. Your bio will be tailored based on the details and achievements you've included about your recent work experiences.
Try it yourself for free.
Choose your tone
Written words, like spoken speech, can embody many different moods and tones. Depending on the context and your personal brand , you might decide your bio should sound more buttoned-up, or more relaxed, or even a little bit silly.Â
These two sentences describe the same person but showcase very different tones and writing style:Â
âA recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Sally is currently a consultant at XYZ Consulting based out of their New York office.âÂ
âA recent UPenn grad, Sally swore off econ after years of hard classes only to end up as a consultant at a major firm â but don't worry, she loves it.âÂ
Start with your name and your current or most recent role
This is not a hard and fast rule, but to get your bio started, it's usually easiest to start with your name and current professional title or role.Â
Example:  âZane Smith is currently the Demand Generation Manager at ABC Tech Company.âÂ
If you're transitioning between roles or switching industries , you can list your most recent role and use your first sentence to say what you're looking to become.
Example 1: âPreviously the Demand Generation Manager at ABC Tech Company, Zane Smith is actively pursuing new opportunities in marketing management.âÂ
Example 2 : âPreviously the Demand Generation Manager at ABC Tech Company, Zane Smith is now an aspiring 2nd grade teacher.âÂ
Add any former titles and list relevant achievements
Once you've introduced yourself and your current title or aspirations, you can flow into your professional background, former job titles, and what you did previously. Together, the first two sentences of your bio could read something like this:Â
âZane Smith is currently the Demand Generation Manager at ABC Tech Company. Previously, he was a Marketing Specialist at FGH Tech Company where he grew paid traffic to their website by 500% year over year.âÂ
How can you ensure your bullet point achievements reflect your qualifications? In addition to using Teal's free Achievement Assistant tool within the AI Resume Builder , try leveraging ChatGPT for this part of the process. Just remember to copy and paste ChatGPT-generated resume achievements back into your AIÂ Resume Builder.
Remember to personalize your bullet point achievements by proofreading and editing them, tweaking as needed using the Achievement Assistant tool.
Consider adding the âwhyâ behind your story
Self-promotion can feel incredibly uncomfortable, but it's important to really make sure you don't undermine your own value. Your âwhy,â the reason that you do what you do everyday , can be powerful and meaningful. Adding what gives you the spark to start each workday can set your own professional bio apart from others.Â
Example: âClaire was inspired to pursue a career in elder law after volunteering in a nursing home throughout high school and college.âÂ
Close with some personal details, if appropriate
Even though your bio will be used in a professional capacity, it's okay to list a few personal details. We're more than just our jobs, and adding a few personal facts can help illustrate who you are outside of the office.Â
Example: âWhen he's not working, Martin can be found tending to his spice garden and going on nature walks with his golden retriever.âÂ
Short professional bio do's and don'tsÂ
Even though there are no official rules for writing a bio, there are still some things you should try to strive for as well as steer clear of if you want to make the best possible impression.Â
Be real:Â Your bio is not the place to fudge the truth about who you are. Be honest about what you've done and where you're heading. Not telling the truth could bar you from achieving your goals and land you in hot water.Â
Be concise:Â We really hate to be the one to tell you this, but unfortunately, most people do not have the time or patience to read a five-paragraph essay about your life story. Sorry to break it to you!Â
Try to keep things brief and avoid run-on sentences. We recommend running your bio through a free clarity reader grammar-checking tool  to make sure your bio isn't too wordy or hard to understand.Â
Be relatable: No matter how lofty your accomplishments are, staying grounded may help you establish stronger connections with others. This is where adding personal details and highlighting your personal brand can serve you well. Whether that's with a hobby, interest , or other role outside of work, being relatable can let others understand and get to know you better and determine if you would be a good fit for a company. Â
Don't:Â
Be arrogant:Â It's both appropriate and expected for you to talk about your professional skills and accomplishments in your short bio. That being said, there's a fine line between talking about your achievements and sounding too braggy. These two examples talk about the same accomplishment but come across very differently:Â
âAn accomplished pianist, Ryan was selected out of nearly 7,000 applicants to perform at the annual New York State School Music Association festival last spring.âÂ
âAn accomplished pianist, Ryan was the obvious choice to perform at the annual New York State School Music Association festival last spring (because he's the best).âÂ
Be spiteful:  This is especially relevant if you're revising your bio after a lay-off  or termination. As tempting as it might be, avoid making any negative statements or accusations in your bio. Positivity and a good attitude will get you much further.
Short professional bio examples
Seeing real professional bios in the wild might help you craft your bio more so than a set of guidelines will. For that reason, we rounded up four real-life short bio examples on different platforms that you can draw further inspiration from.Â
Personal website bio: Audree Kate Lopez
"AUDREE KATE LOPEZ IS A FASHION STYLIST, EDITOR, INDUSTRY EXPERT AND INFLUENCER BASED IN NEW YORK. Audree began her professional career in the fashion departments at Glamour, O, the Oprah Magazine, Editorialist and Redbook magazines. She launched Audree Kate Studios in 2017 and worked on freelance projects at Marc Jacobs, Alice + Olivia, J.Crew and Club Monaco, joined the styling team at Alice + Olivia and became a contributing fashion editor for StyleCaster.com. Over the past few years Audree has styled for various publications, celebrities and retail brands. In 2016, Audree founded a digital course and community for fashion students called Fashion Fundamentals and has hosted workshops and classes around the country, and wrote an ebook titled Fashion Fundamentals."
Why we picked it:Â Audree's professional bio does a great job at telling and humbling her story. Taking her career from her dorm room all the way to major magazines is impressive and gives readers the right impression that she's ambitious and driven. It also gives a strong overview of all of the different yet relevant accomplishments she's checked off, ranging from styling, to editing, to creating her own course.Â
LinkedIn bio: Christen Nino De GuzmanÂ
"Latina creator. Speaker. Tech Mentor. Christen is the Founder of the newly launched app Clara, a community that empowers creators through transparency, brand reviews, and discoverability. An industry vet, Christen has almost a decade of experience working with top content creators at social networking companies such as Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. She is a motivational speaker and mentor in the tech space who is passionate about helping people break into the industry through career advice and actionable content."
Why we picked it:Â Christen's professional bio is punchy, concise, and gives her credibility. The short few sentences at the very beginning are a creative and clever way to describe who she is right off the bat. She also mentions how many years of experience she has, which at this stage in her career, is a wise move and shows that she brings a high level of expertise to her pursuits. The decision to put her social media profiles makes sense and feels true to her, given her engaged following.Â
Twitter bio: DulmaÂ

A professional bio or biography is a short overview of your experience. Professional bios usually include details about education, employment, achievements, and relevant skills.
Purpose of Professional Bios
A bio tells an audience about who you are, what you've done, and what you can do. It can help potential employers, fans, or customers understand your personality and what you stand for.
Writing a bio without a clear starting point is challenging â believe me, I've tried. To ease the process, here are some templates I put together to get you started.
Iâve found itâs best to keep your professional bio honest and to the point. Too long of a bio, and you risk losing your audience's attention. After all, audiences will only read a web page for less than a minute before clicking elsewhere.
And honesty is key because most consumers and clients wonât invest in someone or something if it doesnât seem trustworthy. In fact, 67% of consumers say they must trust a brand before investing in its products or services.
"Plus," she adds, "I'm always happy to talk about my cats at any given moment. You never know when a fellow cat mom could be reading."
Values and Work Approach
Your values can sometimes show your work ethic more effectively than your career path. It can also help you endear yourself to employers and colleagues who want to work with people with similar values.
So donât be shy: Share how you incorporate your values into your work. Whether itâs a commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, or ethical decision-making, explain what drives you and be enthusiastic about it.
Your Personality
Remember: Your bio should always include a taste of your personality! Your sense of humor, creativity, or collaborative nature could all give readers a sense of who you are. This helps readers connect with you on a more personal level.
Remember to tailor your bio for different platforms and audiences. Also, keep it concise and impactful while highlighting the most relevant information in each context.
First-Person Bio vs. Third-Person Bio
While first-person bios are common, third-person bios can be more effective in formal situations.
Your decision to write your professional bio in the first or third person depends on your desire to leave a more personable or assertive impression.
Both approaches work, provided you tailor them to your goals and audience. Whatâs important is to be clear and tell your story in a way that connects with your reader.
How to Write a First-Person Bio
Writing in the first person can be a great way to connect with your audience when building a personal brand. When you write a first-person bio, use "I" or "me" to make yourself relatable and approachable.
Here's one way Iâd write a first-person bio:
"I'm a freelance writer specializing in small business content. I've worked with companies in a variety of industries like home care to fine leather goods."
Speaking in the first person here connects you with a client or brand based on your experience and opinions. Put another way, writing a first-person bio is like telling your story to your audience.
Here are a few tips to make your first-person bio great:
Donât start every sentence with "I."
Showing instead of telling is a great approach.
Letâs say youâre a writer who wants to create a short professional bio. Instead of saying, "I love to write," you can say, "Writer. Bad but enthusiastic dancer."
This portrays your writing skill, shows your personality outside of writing as a dancer, and includes a little sense of humor, which is essential for a writer.
Remember, you know yourself better than anyone.
Adding a back story to your bio helps create context for the roles and successes you write about. Think of it like a case study about who you were, what you are now, and the process that got you to your current position.
Focus on valuable details.
Quick facts about you can showcase your identity and values. For example, if you're writing a bio for LinkedIn, think about how to tie your hobby into what you do.
Let's say Animal Crossing is your hobby. Does it align with your career aspirations? It can be a great addition to your bio if you want to pursue a video game career.
However, if your interests lie elsewhere, including a more relevant hobby is better.
How to Write a Third-Person Bio
Third-person bios sound more authoritative and objective. So, if youâre job searching in a formal industry, applying for grants, or trying to get published, you may want to stick to the third person.
For instance, when you write a third-person bio, you may start with:
"Jasmine Montgomery is a Senior Hiring Manager at LâOreal based in New York. She recruits across several business units to connect with the brightest talent from around the globe."
By only using your name and pronouns to speak about yourself here, you are letting your title and skill set speak for themselves.
These bios create distance between the subject of the bio (you) and the reader through a third person. This person could be anyone, but they usually speak in a tone emphasizing their expertise.
This makes third-person bios feel aloof or overly formal sometimes.
Ideally, your third-person bio should sound friendly but polished, like a message from a close colleague at work. Here are a few tips on how to write a great third-person bio.
Write from the perspective of someone you know and trust.
It can be challenging to write about yourself, so try to see yourself from the perspective of your favorite person at work or a mentor you trust. This can help you write from a position of authority without feeling self-conscious.
Show the reader why they should trust your opinion.
A professional bio often reflects a specific industry or niche. With this in mind, your text should include relevant details that professionals in your industry know. Avoid jargon whenever you can.
Remember, you're telling a story.
If you want a third-person bio, but you're used to writing in first-person, it may help to write it the most comfortable way for you.
Your professional bio is an essential piece of writing, so edit it carefully. Edit your writing from both points of view and see which works best for your target audience.
Here's how to write a professional bio, step by step.
- Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.
- Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.
- Mention any associated brand name you might use.
- State your current position and what you do.
- Include at least one professional accomplishment.
- Describe your values and how they inform your career.
- Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.
- Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.
If youâre anything like me, you probably don't think about your professional bio until youâre asked to "send one over via email."
You have one afternoon to come up with it, so you scramble together a bio that ends up reading like this:
"Rodney Erickson is a content marketing professional at HubSpot, a CRM platform that helps companies attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.
Previously, Rodney worked as a marketing manager for a tech software startup. He graduated with honors from Columbia University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing."
To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.
Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.
1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.
You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):
- Facebook Business page .
- Industry blog byline .
- Instagram account .
- Personal website .
- LinkedIn profile .
- Industry website .
- Personal blog .
As you'll see in the professional bio examples below, the length and tone of your bio will differ depending on the platforms you use.
Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.
2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.
If your readers remember nothing else about your bio, they should remember your name. Therefore, it's a good idea for your first and last name to be the first two words of your professional bio.
Even if your name is printed above this bio (hint: it should), this is a rare moment where it's okay to be redundant.
For example, if I were writing my bio, I might start it like this:
Lindsay Kolowich
Lindsay Kolowich is a Senior Marketing Manager at HubSpot.
3. Mention any associated brand name you might use.
Will your professional bio represent you or a business you work for? Ensure you mention the brand you associate with in your bio. If you're a freelancer, you may have a personal business name or pseudonym you advertise to your clients.
Here are a few examples:
- Lindsay Kolowich Marketing.
- SEO Lindsay.
- Kolowich Consulting.
- Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).
Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."
4. State your current position and what you do.
Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the following few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Refrain from assuming your audience knows what your job title entails.
Make your primary responsibilities known so readers can know you and understand what you offer to your industry.
5. Include at least one professional accomplishment.
Just as a business touts its client successes through case studies, your professional bio should let your audience know what you've achieved.
What have you done for yourself â as well as for others â that makes you a valuable player in your industry?
6. Describe your values and how they inform your career.
Why do you do what you do? What might make your contribution to the market different from your colleagues? What are the values that make your business a worthwhile investment to others?
Create a professional bio that answers these questions.
7. Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.
Transition from describing your values in work to defining who you are outside of work. This may include:
- Your family.
- Your hometown.
- Sports you play.
- Hobbies and interests.
- Favorite music and travel destinations.
- Side hustles you're working on.
People like connecting with other people. The more transparent you are about who you are personally, the more likable you'll be to people reading about you.
8. Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.
End your professional bio on a good or, more specifically, a funny note. By leaving your audience with something quirky or unique, you can ensure they'll leave your website with a pleasant impression of you.
Following the steps above when writing your bio is important, but take your time with one section. People consume lots of information daily. So ensure your bio hooks 'em in the first line, and you wonât lose them.
(P.S. Want to boost your professional brand? Take one of HubSpot Academy's free certification courses . In just one weekend, you can add a line to your resume and bio that over 60,000 marketers covet.)
Why Good Bios Are Important for a Professional
You may think, "How many people read professional bios, anyway?"
The answer: A lot. Though there's no way to tell who is reading it, you want it catchy. Your professional bio will delight the right people coming across it on multiple platforms.
Professional bios can live on your LinkedIn profile , company website, guest posts, speaker profiles, Twitter bio , Instagram bio , and many other places.
And most importantly, itâs the tool you can leverage most when youâre networking.
Bottom line? People will read your professional bio. Whether they remember it or it makes them care about you is a matter of how well you present yourself to your intended audience.

It's a well-put value proposition that sets her apart from the rest of the HR industry.
Marie concludes her bio with a smooth mix of professional skills, like her Spanish fluency, and personal interests, such as podcasting and Star Wars (she mentions the latter with just the right amount of humor).
- Straight off the bat, Marie uses a story to share her experiences of how she began as a recruiter.
- It provides a subtle pitch for readers to check out her podcast.
- The bio exudes Maries approachable, fun, and playful personality.
8. Wonbo Woo : Executive Producer
Wonbo Woo is the executive producer of WIRED's video content and has several impressive credits to his name. What does this mean for his professional bio? He has to prioritize.
With this in mind, Wonbo opens his bio with the most eye-catching details first (if the image below is hard to read, click it to see the full copy ).
I wouldnât necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now thatâs something I can get behind.
Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio â it makes you seem approachable.
- It highlights Chrisâs achievement without bragging.
- The last sentence portrays Chris as a responsible man who loves his family.
- The well-written bio speaks to nature lovers who like the outdoors, surfing, and more. This gives them reasons to follow Chris.
10. Lisa Quine : Creative Consultant
Bio platform: portfolio website.
Creative professionals who specialize in visual art may find it challenging to balance the writing of their bio and displaying of their portfolio. Not Lisa Quine. Lisa has an exceptional balance of her professional bio and creative work.
Throughout her bio, you'll notice the number of murals she's completed and a brief timeline of her career. This helps her paint the picture of who she is as a professional.
The rest of her bio similarly focuses on Twine's strengths as someone whoâs able to take hair care "back to basics."
Mouzon effectively grips the reader's attention with this introduction and then dives into some of her impressive accomplishments â including a brand now sold at Urban Outfitters and Target.
The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.
For instance, in the second paragraph, she admits:
"While building a brand may have looked effortless from the outside, starting a business at age 23 with no resources or funding quickly forced me to realize that early-stage entrepreneurship was anything but transparent."
As an avid Zumba fan, I was excited to include this one. Perez styles his LinkedIn bio as a short story, starting with his background as a hard-working teen who held three jobs by age 14.
His bio tells the fun and fascinating origin story of Zumba, in which Perez, an aerobics teacher in Florida at the time, forgot his music for class and used a Latin music cassette tape instead ... "And it was an instant hit!"
His bio continues:
"Shortly after he was connected to Alberto Periman and Alberto Aghion, and Zumba was officially created ... What started as a dream now has 15 million people in more than 200,000 locations in 186 countries who take Zumba classes every week."
There's something in there for everyone.
- The last section of the bio shows Annâs warm personality â "Ann lives in Boston, where she is Mom to creatures two- and four-legged."
- Written in the third person, this bio has lots of proof (like followers), which shows Ann is a terrific marketing leader.
If you're posting a bio on a social media account or sending a quick blurb to a client, you want to keep it short and sweet while showcasing your accomplishments.
To get started, use these best practices for writing your short professional bio:
- Introduce yourself.
- State what you do.
- Add key skills or areas of expertise.
- Include a personal mission statement
- Celebrate your wins.
- Provide your contact information.
- Show them your personality.
1. Introduce yourself.
Your introduction is your first impression, so always begin by telling people who you are. You may start with a greeting like, "Hello, my name is" or "Hi! Let me first introduce myself âŠ" when sending your bio as a message.
If youâre writing a bio for an online platform, stating your name at the beginning works as well.
Leading with your name â even as a question â is important for recognition and building relationships.
2. State what you do.
Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.
So detail your most relevant work in your short bios, like CEO, professor, and author.
Take a cue from Angela Duckworth , who specifies what she does in her LinkedIn bio:
3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.
If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.
- A joke. "Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. At least thatâs what I learned when I createdâŠ"
- Mention a hobby. "Iâll be honest: for me, tennis is life â Go Nadal!"
- A fun fact. "Every year, I watch 100 new films! Iâm a cinephile and love every movie genre."
- A few emojis related to your interests. "đ¶đ€đŸđŹđ"
Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.
When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible â but this isnât the most effective approach.
Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.
Let's dive into a few examples of short professional bios.
Short Professional Bio Examples
- Tristen Taylor: Marketing Manager
- Lianna Patch: Copywriter
- Precious Oboidhe: Content Strategist and Writer
- Rebecca Bollwitt: Writer
- Megan Gilmore: Cookbook Author
- Bea Dixon: Feminine Care Founder
- Tammy Hembrow: Instagram Influencer
- Dr. Cody: Chiropractor
- Larry Kim: Founder
- Dharmesh Shah: Founder and CTO
- Lily Ugbaja: Content Strategist
- Ian Anderson Gray: Marketer
- Van Jones: Political Commentator, Author, and Lawyer
1. Tristen Taylor: Marketing Manager
Bio platform: blog byline.
Tristen Taylor is a Marketing Manager here at HubSpot. She's written content for HubSpot's Marketing, Sales, and Customer Service blogs; her blog author bio is one of my favorites.
What I love most about Tristen's bio is that itâs a great example of how to deliver information about yourself that is relevant to your work while also sharing fun details that audiences will find relatable.
Her bio reads:
"Building from her experience with GoCo.io and Southwest Airlines, Tristen's work has been recognized by Marketing Brew and BLACK@INBOUND. She lives in Washington, DC, attending anime conventions and painting in her free time."
Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"
But that couldn't be further from the truth.
By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.
- The bio is short and direct.
- The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.
6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder
Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human â not just a businesswoman.
For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.
What more do you need to know?
Ian doesn't take his bio too seriously but uses every character to highlight everything about him.
He includes his skills as a marketer and podcast host, who he is outside work as a dad, and what he can help you do. His smiles also give the bio a sense of humor and realness.

How To Write a Reference Letter (Examples and Free Template)
Pass along your praise in a meaningful way.
Teacher job searches frequently require something many other careers donât: a letter of reference. Both principals and teachers may find themselves asked to write these letters for their employees or coworkers. Wondering what to include and how to make the recommendation useful? Hereâs how to write a reference letter for a teacher.
Want to make things even easier? Grab our free reference letter printable template, which walks you through the whole process. Just fill out the form on this page .
What is a reference letter?
How to write a letter of reference, reference letter example: principal for teacher, reference letter example: teacher for coworker.
Reference letters are just what they sound like: a testimonial about a personâs professional qualifications, abilities, and achievements. Theyâre written by someone who knows the applicant well and can speak to specifics about their career.
These days, most jobs donât require reference letters since employers perform reference checks themselves. However, academia is different. Many teaching jobs require candidates to submit written letters of reference as part of their application packet. This is just one part of their overall evaluation of a candidate, of course. But these letters remain a key part of many teachersâ job searches.
Letter of Reference vs. Letter of Recommendation
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but reference letters are almost always specific to a job search. Students often need letters of recommendation for scholarships and college applications. If you need help writing a letter of recommendation for a student, check out these articles:

Review Reference Letter Samples
If youâve never written a reference letter or you want to up your game, take a look at some samples first. One of our favorite ways to do it is to use AI like ChatGPT to generate some reference letter samples specific to your situation. You definitely donât want to copy these word-for-word, but you might find some helpful phrases or get a better idea of the format you should use. Weâve included some sample letters below too.
Brainstorm Ideas First
Before you begin writing, do a quick brainstorming session and jot down your thoughts about these prompts:
- What three words first come to mind when you think of this teacher?
- List this personâs biggest strengths as an educator.
- List a few times when this teacher really impressed you.
- Has this person won any awards or accolades worth mentioning?
- What makes this teacher special compared to their peers?
- What would this teacherâs students say about them? What about parents or co-workers? (If you have examples, round them up to include in the letter.)
Personalize the Letter
If you can, try to write a letter thatâs specific to the job the teacher needs a reference letter for. Find out what theyâll be doing in their new role or position so you can include the most relevant qualities in your recommendation. Some reference letters are more general, so itâs OK if you canât personalize them to the job.
Ask the teacher if thereâs anything specific theyâd like you to mention. You may also ask if thereâs anything theyâd prefer to keep confidential. For instance, if the teacher has a disability, they may not want to disclose that information yet.
Write an Introduction
Introduce yourself and explain your relationship to the teacher youâre providing a reference for. Include information such as how long youâve known them and whether youâre speaking as a colleague, coworker, mentor, or supervisor.
Verify Their Qualifications and Experience
In the next paragraph, speak to the teacherâs education, including any special certifications or professional development achievements. Mention any awards, honors, or accolades theyâve earned. You can keep this section fairly short; the teacher has likely listed all of this on their CV already. Your reference letter will just help verify these qualifications.
Highlight Their Best Qualities
In the body of your letter, write two or three paragraphs that really help identify what makes this teacher special. Donât try to squeeze in everything you know; instead, think about what really helps the person youâre recommending stand out. For each paragraph, focus on one of these areas (or other relevant topics), choosing the two or three overall that seem most important for this person.
- Subject matter knowledge and expertise
- Pedagogy skills
- Student and/or parent relationships
- Professional development
- Community relations
- Communication skills
- Leadership roles
- School pride and loyalty
- Personal traits, such as passion, enthusiasm, dedication, creativity, etc.
Provide Specific Examples and Anecdotes
This is where you really have the chance to make your letter valuable to the candidate. Itâs easy to describe a person as âpassionate about recognizing diversityâ or âexcellent at differentiating learning.â Without examples, though, these are just words. Try to anchor each quality you mention with specific examples or anecdotes that back up those words. Here are a couple of examples:
- âAlana is passionate about recognizing and celebrating diversity in her classroom. She frequently draws on her strong community relationships to bring diverse speakers and cultural activities to her classroom. Last fall, she organized an incredibly popular school-wide Diversity Fair where students and their families were encouraged to share their own cultures and experiences and learn from each other. One parent noted, âIâve lived in this community for three years, but this is the first time I really feel like I know my neighbors.ââ
- âOne of Jamieâs strongest qualities is their ability to differentiate learning for their students. Theyâre always willing to determine whatâs keeping a student from doing their best and finding new ways to overcome challenges. For instance, Jamie was instrumental in helping our school implement text-to-speech software that assists struggling readers and those who have visual impairment. This leveled the playing field in their history and geography classes, helping students focus on the subject at hand instead of spending too much time deciphering text.â
Conclude With a Strong Endorsement
Youâve come all this way, so donât fall short at the very end! This is the time to state your personal recommendation in no uncertain terms. Sum up your major points, and offer to provide more information if needed.
- âIâm pleased to recommend Alana Whitmore for an elementary teaching position at your school. Her commitment to diversity, creative classroom approaches, and compassion for students and fellow coworkers would make her an excellent addition to any education team. If you want to discuss her qualifications further, donât hesitate to contact me.â
Write Professionally and Proofread Carefully
This is a business communication, so strive for a professional but warm tone overall. If itâs a paper letter, use the standard business letter format (on your school letterhead if youâre an administrator). In an email, be sure your signature includes contact information such as a phone number and school address.
Donât forget to proofread! A letter riddled with spelling errors and grammar mistakes is unlikely to hold much sway with a hiring committee or selection panel. Use a program like Grammarly to help you edit your letter until youâre satisfied with the final version.
Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Alana Whitmore for any opportunity that may arise that aligns with her exceptional skills and dedication as an elementary school teacher. In my capacity as the principal of Maya Angelou Elementary, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the invaluable contributions Alana has made to our school community.
Alana has worked here for seven years, three as a fifth-grade teacher and four in third grade. She came to us fresh from earning her teaching certification at Lancaster University, and continued her education over the last several years to earn her Masterâs of Education in Curriculum Design and Development. She was honored with our districtâs Teacher of the Year award in 2022 and was the keynote speaker at our stateâs education conference in 2023.
Alana is an exemplary educator who consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to the academic and emotional growth of her students. Through her inventive teaching methods and personalized approach, she ensures that every child in her classroom is provided with opportunities to thrive and succeed. During a recent observation, I noted how she cleverly adapted her unit on volcanoes to embrace different learning styles. She provided choices like watching a video, reading an article, or listening to a short podcast to build background knowledge. Students individually chose the option they preferred, then used their knowledge to work with a partner to design a poster, write a report, or give a short presentation on the topic. Students were all engaged throughout the process, enjoying a measure of autonomy while still meeting the stated learning objectives.
Furthermore, Alana excels in building strong and collaborative relationships with parents and guardians. She understands the importance of fostering open communication and partnership between home and school, and she actively seeks opportunities to involve families in their childâs education. One parent reached out to me to share these thoughts: âMs. Whitmore is the first teacher who seems to care about me as a parent and a person. She went out of her way to arrange a videoconference that met my hectic work schedule, and seemed genuinely interested in the suggestions I had for helping my son. Knowing that she really cares has made this school year so much better for us all.â
In addition to her effectiveness in the classroom and with parents, Alana is highly regarded by her colleagues for her collaborative spirit and willingness to share her expertise. Last year, she helped organize a very well-received professional development day, with a variety of sessions that allowed every teacher to find a subject that truly mattered to them. She serves as a mentor to one of our new teachers, who told me that Alana has helped him see how he can put his college educational theories into practice in the real world. Other teachers regularly share praise for Alanaâs cooperative spirit, and sheâs been awarded âCoworker of the Yearâ by our staff three years in a row.
Alana embodies the qualities of an exceptional educator: She is dedicated, passionate, and deeply invested in the well-being and success of her students. Her commitment to differentiation, parent relationships, and collaboration sets her apart as a truly outstanding teacher. I wholeheartedly recommend Alana Whitmore for any role or opportunity where her skills, expertise, and dedication can make a meaningful impact. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.
Gina Torres Principal, Maya Angelou Elementary
Dear Selection Committee,
I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Jamie Lin for any teaching position that may become available within your school. As a fellow teacher and colleague at Ridgemont High School, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Jamie and have witnessed firsthand their exceptional talents and dedication to the field of education.
Jamie came to our school as a teacher of history and geography in 2019, working with ninth- through twelfth-grade students each year since. Before joining our team, they earned their Masterâs Degree in Education with a focus on diversity studies. During Jamieâs four years here, they have been nominated for Teacher of the Year three times and received the award in 2023. Jamie frequently speaks at educational conferences on subjects like cultural relevance and student diversity.
One of Jamieâs greatest strengths is their ability to foster diversity and inclusivity within the learning environment. Whether discussing historical events or exploring global cultures, Jamie ensures that all students feel valued, respected, and represented in the curriculum. They frequently draw on their strong community relationships to bring diverse speakers and cultural activities to the classroom. Speakers and cultural presentations have included representatives of several indigenous communities and local authors from a variety of backgrounds. They also invite community politicians and activists to debate key issues, while students observe and then question the speakers themselves.
In addition to their dedication to diversity, Jamie is a remarkably creative educator who consistently goes above and beyond to engage students in meaningful and thought-provoking learning experiences. They have a passion for project-based learning, teaching critical thinking and problem-solving by having students tackle real-world issues. Through their projects, Jamieâs students have painted cultural murals on the walls in the school courtyard, helped translate our school handbook and other documents into three different languages, and created clubs for fellow students interested in topics like history, geography, and global cultures. Jamie believes in demonstrating what youâve learned in meaningful ways, and their students thrive in this environment.
Furthermore, Jamie excels at building strong community relationships both inside and outside the classroom. They actively collaborate with colleagues, parents, and community members to create a supportive and enriching learning environment that extends beyond the walls of the school. Last fall, Jamie organized an incredibly popular school-wide Diversity Fair where students and their families were encouraged to share their own cultures and experiences and learn from each other. One parent noted, âIâve lived in this community for three years, but this is the first time I really feel like I know my neighbors.â
Overall, Jamie Lin is an exceptional educator who embodies the qualities of excellence, creativity, and community engagement. Their passion for teaching, dedication to diversity, and innovative approach to education make them an invaluable asset to any school community.
I wholeheartedly endorse Jamie Lin for any teaching position and am confident that they will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

Looking for new ways to appreciate nature 2 new birding books may help.
Barbara J. King
Just as spring begins to show its annual gifts of rejuvenation â and as we celebrate Earth Day â two new books offer reflections on ways that watching birds can renew our joy in nature, and maybe even transform our lives.
In Birding to Change the World , environmental justice educator Trish O'Kane recounts lessons from birds that have galvanized her teaching and activism in Wisconsin and Vermont. And, hitting shelves Tuesday, novelist Amy Tan in The Backyard Bird Chronicles tightens the focus in describing and drawing the array of birds that visit her yard in California.
The author of The Joy Luck Club , The Valley of Amazement and other novels, Tan makes a glorious success of her first venture into non-fiction. The book consists of journal entries from 2017 through 2022 that recount her observations of the behavior of oak titmice, golden crowned sparrows, California scrub jays, Anna's hummingbirds and other birds, coupled with her drawings of them. The entire package is enchanting, all the more so because Tan peppers the pages with questions about what she is seeing.
Author Interviews
Amy tan didn't think 'the backyard bird chronicles' was publishable. clearly it was.
One day, from inside her house, Tan noticed a female house finch flying back and forth just outside the glass door, while looking directly at her. One feeder was full of seeds, and the bird sat there but did not eat. Another feeder nearby, devoted to highly favored sunflower seeds, was empty. "Could this bird possibly be signaling that I should refill its favorite feeder?" Tan wondered. She did refill it, and the finch "immediately went to the feeder and ate and ate and ate."
I love Tan's curiosity and openness to possibilities about birds, who are much smarter than often credited. (In keeping with this good message of hers, all the better to avoid "it" when referring to a bird individual, especially when the bird's sex is known.)
Another day, an unfamiliar bird showed up. Tan scrutinized the bird's markings and worked through the process of identification. "I went giddy in the brain," she remembers. "It was an American Tree Sparrow. But how could that be?" These birds are unexpected in California. Would the bird try to rejoin other American tree sparrows? Could the bird become disoriented and die?
"With both fiction and birds," Tan writes, "I think about existence, the span of life, from conception to birth to survival to death to remembrance by others."
When she began this project, Tan could recognize precisely three birds in her yard. Now, the count is 63 species. I deeply share her joy at this later-in-life learning curve: In 2023, I counted 43 bird species in our little patch of land in southeastern Virginia.
Tan's playful humor strays into outright anthropomorphism at times: "I want tourist junk food!" declares a baby crow she has drawn. This fanciful tone only brings extra warmth to a magnificently written and illustrated volume.
Author Trish O'Kane is entranced with American woodcocks. These birds resemble "a football with wings" and walk awkwardly on land. They rely heavily on earthworms as a diet mainstay. Their main call, termed peenting, is a "strange buzzing that sounds like a giant insect being squashed." In the air, they fly in intricate spirals.
Woodcocks, American bitterns, sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and catbirds are just some of the 134 bird species that inhabit Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin, in addition to numerous species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Yet every July 4th beginning in the 1990s â long before O'Kane arrived in Madison to begin graduate school â the park had hosted a conflagration of fireworks and noise called Rhythm and Booms.
At this event, attended by 100,000 people, cannons were fired and five tons of fireworks exploded. Birds are known to feel "panic and even pain" from such thunderous noise; some abandon nests or even die of fright. Heavy metal residues from the fireworks soaked the park's soil.
This tradition outraged O'Kane, as did plans to further develop the park beyond its existing sports fields. With a background in environmental justice and investigative journalism, O'Kane recognized that Warner Park was at even extra risk because it bordered low-income neighborhoods; white folks in power weren't much concerned with nature opportunities for people of color. She oriented her dissertation around questions of social justice: Why couldn't a park in a lower-income neighborhood also be a protected place for wildlife?
O'Kane carried out interdisciplinary research; collaborated with local nature lovers to form an activist group called Wild Warner; and educated students from middle school to college age about the park. (A laudable endeavor, though I can't comprehend why O'Kane supported the process of teaching kids to fish since many fishes, like birds, have intricate social lives.)
Tirelessly working together, a team of park lovers brought evidence forward to local authorities about the ongoing harms to the park, including violations to the Clean Water Act and poisoning of the birds' environment â highlighting the delightful woodcocks who were eating the park's toxin-laced earthworms. The authorities listened: Rhythm and Booms was moved out of the park and damaged areas of the park were restored to prairie.
O'Kane's story is richer in scope than I can convey here. It begins in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina and ends in Vermont, where she teaches today. Her book is a beautiful love letter to local activism and especially to the birds who teach her so much. Canada geese, for example, "provided a perfect organizing and leadership model." As the geese flock in the air, they "synchronize their flapping and switch position constantly... It seems geese have found the solution to activist burnout."
Tan and O'Kane invite us to see the beauty of birds in our world and to act for their well-being. We need their voices in this spring's chorus.
