Every generation deserves a fair, healthy future – from kids, to parents, to grandparents. It’s why we’re supporting families, one of the many things that we are doing in Budget 2024 to build an economy that helps every generation get ahead.

Children deserve to have the best start in life. But today, nearly one in four children in Canada do not get enough food. That impacts their health and their opportunities to learn and grow. Higher grocery prices are making it hard for parents to afford to put enough good, healthy food on the table. Study after study has shown that when kids eat well, they do better in school. And when kids do well, that sets them up for success. Everyone deserves a fair shot at success, and we believe that fairness means we support each other at every stage of life – and that starts from childhood.

That’s why we’ve made generational investments like the Canada Child Benefit, which provides families with up to nearly $8,000 per child, per year, to provide the essentials their kids need. And since 2015, 650,000 children have been lifted out of poverty, meaning Canada’s child poverty rate has fallen by more than half.

And when it comes to helping kids, especially vulnerable kids, we’re going to keep going.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced a new National School Food Program . With an investment of $1 billion over five years, the Program, included in Budget 2024, will launch with a target of providing meals to 400,000 more kids every year, beyond those served by existing school food programs. For moms and dads, it will mean the peace of mind that your kids are taken care of and do not go hungry. For kids, it will mean healthy meals – helping them learn, grow, and reach their full potential. This is a generational investment in the future of our kids, and we’re going to work with provinces and territories and Indigenous partners to ensure every child has the food they need.

The Program will be a safety net for the kids who need this support the most. The lack of access to food disproportionately impacts children from lower-income families and from racialized and Indigenous communities. With this program, we’re getting healthy food on the plates of growing kids.

This includes investments for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities as well as Self-Governing and Modern Treaty partners, many of whom have some of the highest rates of food insecurity in Canada. Investments will also support capacity building and engagement with Indigenous partners to co-develop culturally appropriate solutions. These partnerships will aim to tackle food insecurity by advancing Indigenous-led solutions and will further our work on reconciliation.

The new National School Food Program will also help provinces, territories, and Indigenous partners expand their existing school food programs to make sure more children across the country can enjoy the healthy meals they need. The Program is good for parents and kids, and it’s good for the economy as well. It will help take pressure off of families and invest directly in the future of our kids, while improving children’s health, education, and well-being.

Last week, we announced measures to protect renters and create more affordable child care spaces. This is on top of our actions to improve health care and dental care, strengthen pensions, and increase access to medications – making sure that, no matter your background or income, you have what you need to be healthy. We all depend on Canada’s future success. And Canada’s success depends on the youngest generations being healthy, doing well, and being set up to succeed.

The global supplement industry is projected to be worth almost $200 billion by 2025, but Dr. Will Bulsiewicz , who's also the US medical director of the nutrition company Zoe, tries to get most of his nutrients from his food.

"I would never say take supplements instead of eating a healthy salad or something like that. Have your food, make sure you have enough fiber and a diversity of plants, and then compliment it with supplements that are targeted to achieve a specific health effect," he said.

"Supplements are beneficial when they're not in competition with food," he said, adding that he takes these three "thoughtful and targeted" supplements every day .

Some biohackers attempting to live for as long as possible pop vitamin D for longevity , partly because it helps the body absorb calcium and improves bone health.

Ryan Andrews, a registered dietitian, previously told BI that most of us could get enough vitamin D from the sun.

But Bulsiewicz takes it to make sure he's getting enough even in the winter when there's less sunlight.

You can also get vitamin D from fortified milk, mushrooms, and fatty fish such as trout, salmon, tuna, and mackerel.

Bulsiewciz eats a plant-based diet, so he opts for algae-based supplements, but you can also get omega-3 from fish oils.

Omega-3 fatty acids perform essential functions in the body, such as aiding cell, eye, and heart health and the development of fetuses in the womb. Experts aren't sure whether fish-oil supplements help our health or whether the benefits come from the combination of nutrients found in whole fish. But a large 2018 study found that taking omega-3 supplements could be beneficial for people who didn't eat fish.

As well as fatty fish, omega-3 is also found in nuts and seeds such as flaxseed and walnuts, plant oils such as soybean and canola, and fortified products.

Prebiotics are substances that feed gut bacteria, and prebiotic supplements aim to improve the balance of these bacteria — although the health benefits of these supplements haven't been proven.

Bulsiewicz says you shouldn't "try to out-supplement a bad diet" because "you can't go from a C-minus gut to an A-plus with supplements alone."

You need to have a good diet as a base, and then you can "fill in the gaps" with supplements, he says.

You can get prebiotics in foods such as leeks, garlic, onions, asparagus, and black-eyed peas.

Government of Canada announces support for innovative solutions to address labour challenges in the agriculture and agri-food sector

Today, Élisabeth Brière, Member of Parliament for Sherbrooke and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced the 5 projects that will receive up to $1 million in funding each under Phase 2 of the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program – Challenge Stream. The announcement was made at Exonetik Inc., one of the Phase 2 winners.

April 5, 2024 – Sherbrooke, Quebec – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

The 5 projects, approved for funding by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will target the Canadian meat processing industry and the Canadian controlled environment agriculture industry with the goal of advancing automation and robotic technologies. These companies have developed ideas to address challenges such as work productivity, labour shortages, and operational efficiency.

Under the Canadian Meat Processing Technology Development Challenge, projects include:

  • Exonetik Inc. - Developing a low-cost, collaborative robot to help automate tasks 
  • E.O.I Technologies Inc. - Developing sensors to collect data on fast moving conveyor systems 

Under the Enhancing Automation in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Farming Challenge, projects include:

  • Exonetik Inc. – Developing a robotic arm to work alongside humans to harvest fruits and vegetables
  • Mycionics Inc. – Developing a robotic mushroom harvester, packer and harvester lift
  • Kinova Inc. – Developing a robotic arm to pick, harvest and de-leaf cucumbers and strawberries

Technical innovation provides opportunities to improve the operational efficiency and safety of workers in meat processing facilities where people and machines often interact.

Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) production is labour intensive, requiring workers for a range of critical production tasks including propagation, planting, movement and management of plants, cleaning, harvesting, pest management, pruning, sorting and packaging. Opinion | Political ritual: California labor priorities and business ‘job killers’ again on a collision course

An annual political ritual was repeated Wednesday when the California Chamber of Commerce released its 2024 list of “job killers” – nine bills that business executives consider to be the most burdensome.

“These proposals would add significant costs and burdens to California’s small businesses, creating an even more challenging business climate in our state,” chamber president Jennifer Barrera said in an accompanying statement.

Two hours later, the California Labor Federation released its list of high-priority legislation – 17 bills that it says will enhance the security and safety of California workers.

“Labor’s agenda is focused on empowering workers to shape the future of work, instead of allowing corporations and tech companies to continue playing by their own rules and amass wealth while workers struggle to get by,” the federation’s chief officer, Lorena Gonzalez, declared.

With that, two of the Capitol’s most influential interest groups renewed what has been one of California’s most enduring rivalries.

Somewhat surprisingly, only one bill appears on both lists. Senate Bill 1116, which would provide unemployment insurance benefits to striking workers, is nearly identical to legislation that was on the chamber’s 2023 job killer list and passed the Legislature only to be vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

In his veto, Newsom cited the Unemployment Insurance Fund’s huge deficit, upwards of $20 billion borrowed from the federal government to cover jobless benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employers are now paying higher payroll taxes to shrink the debt.

The labor federation says the new legislation, carried again by Sen. Anthony Portantino, a Glendale Democrat, “will help workers make ends meet and protect them from going into debt.” The chamber, on the other hand, says it would “effectively force employers to subsidize strikes at completely unrelated businesses,” and increase the unemployment fund’s debt.

The chamber’s list of targets includes another unemployment insurance measure, Senate Bill 1434, which would raise taxes on employers to beef up the unemployment fund, although the extent of the increase is not yet specified. The measure, carried by Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, a Los Angeles Democrat, would also create a new unemployment insurance benefit for workers who do not now qualify for them.

One reason for little overlap in the two initial priority lists is that many of the labor federation’s measures affect public employees, who are the majority of unionized workers in California, while the chamber concentrates on legislation affecting the private sector.

In recent years, labor unions have gained more political clout as union-friendly Democrats captured about 75% of the Legislature’s seats.

Gonzalez cites legislation raising minimum wages for fast food workers and those in health care, increasing paid sick leave from three days a year to five and allowing legislative staffers to unionize, as union victories last year.

However, the chamber also had a fairly good record in 2023. It designated 19 bills as “job killers,” seven of which made it to Newsom, who signed four of them and vetoed three, including the one granting unemployment insurance benefits to strikers.

The fast food and health care wage bills had been on the chamber’s 2023 list but were removed after being amended to reduce their impacts on employers.
