My Birthday Essay

Birthdays are often a joyous occasion for a person and their loved ones. People celebrate their birthdays in different ways, for instance, by partying, praying, or going on a trip. Here are a few sample essays on “My Birthday”.

100 Words Essay On My Birthday

My favourite day of the year for me is my birthday, which is on December 20. It's the day when I can do whatever I feel like, and I am made to feel extra special by my parents. My birthdays are always planned in advance. My parents always made an effort to prepare for my birthdays. When I was younger they bought me new clothes, new shoes, and new accessories so that I could dress my best.

My Birthday Essay

They also used to take me to the market and get me to buy may favourite toys and video games. As I got older, slight changes emerged in the way we celebrate my birthday. Now, instead of receiving toys as a gift from my parents, I receive money. My family and friends gather around me to sing "Happy Birthday" as I cut the cake, and shower me with their blessings and good wishes.

200 Words Essay On My Birthday

I believe that it is a privilege for us to get to celebrate our birthdays, for a huge chunk of children does not get this opportunity. I believe birthdays are also a time for us to realise our responsibilities and take a step towards fulfilling them. I always make different plans for my birthday every year, but one thing that is common every year is that my dad and I visit the temple and give out sweets to the poor as we leave. It brightens my morning to see the children's smiles.

Gifting The Needy | Because my birthday falls in the chilly month of December, I made the decision last year to purchase winter clothing for poor and needy families living close to my home rather than spending money on a party and decorations on my birthday. My parents supported and helped me when I discussed this idea with them.

The Celebrations | We went shopping for clothing in the afternoon, including sweaters, jackets, socks, gloves, and other necessities, and distributed them among underprivileged children. The greatest gift they gave me was their joy and well wishes. We had a simple family dinner after returning home, which was a great way to end my day.

500 Words Essay On My Birthday

I, like many of us, am always excited about celebrating my birthday. In fact, my planning of my birthday celebrations begins weeks and months before the actual day. I also get my parents to brainstorm and suggest how we would celebrate my birthday.

One thing I always ensure is that my birthday celebrations should involve the most special people of my life, that is, my family and friends, and that I should also do some good to the needy and underprivileged children. Here is a detailed explanation of how I celebrated my birthday in one of the previous years.

Celebrations At School

On my birthday, which was on December 20’ 2008, the whole school sang a birthday song for me in the morning assembly. I wore my favourite dress to school instead of the school uniform and distributed sweets among all students and teachers. For my friends who reside far from my house, I planned a party.

We went for lunch, my father picked us up and drove us to a restaurant. They were all talking happily as they ate lunch. After lunch and dessert, my father dropped off my friends at their houses before we returned home.

Evening Celebrations

I had a variety of plans for the evening. A birthday party was planned by my parents at home with lovely decorations and a big theme cake.

The Cake | The decoration was done by an event planner, and the cake was also customised. It was of light blue and pink colour and had detailing made of cream-like flowers and leaves, with two candles attached at the top of it. It was made of two layers, the first layer was of strawberry flavour, and the other was of vanilla.

What We Did | By 5:30, all of my friends and family members had arrived wearing party clothes. They all wished me birthday. Around six o'clock, we had begun playing games like races, musical chairs, and other activities. After playing, I cut the cake, and everyone handed me gifts. Although I had to wait, I was very eager to open the gifts. After the cutting of the cake, dinner was served, with a few starters, and both vegetarian and non-vegetarian main course. I also gave the guests a return gift as an expression of thanks. The return gift consisted of a small ‘thank you’ card and some chocolates.

Gifts I Got

Everyone went back to their homes after dinner, and I started opening the gifts, no matter small or big. I received one Barbie doll set, some chocolates, video games and one handmade card made by my friend. I became emotional on seeing the handmade card as it was beautifully crafted, having some pictures of my friends attached to it. I kept this card safely inside my almirah so that it remained as it is and did not get lost.

My parents and I were feeling incredibly exhausted, but we were happy that we had a great party and a meaningful day. My parents got emotional thinking that time was flying by too fast, and soon I would grow up enough to get married and leave their house.

How I Celebrate My Birthday Essay (250+ Words)

I am very excited as it is my 20th birthday on April 9th. I have a lot of things to do like sending invitations, arranging games, and decorating the drawing room for my birthday celebration. My sister helps me by decorating the cards and writing addresses in beautiful handwriting. She also invites her friends to the party.

My father has a different idea about my birthday. Last year, he took me to an orphanage and made me contribute to their welfare fund. This year, he plans to take me to a school for the blind.

My friends start coming around 5 p.m. I greet them warmly and make them comfortable in the beautifully decorated drawing room. They bring gifts wrapped in colorful paper. Sometimes my uncle who lives abroad sends me a nice set of pens or a pair of jeans.

After all my friends have arrived, my mother brings out the cake and we light the candles. We sing “Happy Birthday,” and I blow out the candles. I cut the cake into small pieces and we enjoy it with some snacks. We also play games that are full of laughter and fun.

As the evening shadows lengthen, my faraway friends start saying goodbye. My father then takes me to a charity home, a school for the disabled, or a hospital in the city. He wants me to remember those people as my brothers and sisters and help them in their time of need.

How I Celebrated My Birthday

My birthday is not only important for me, but also in the history of our country. I was born on 20th January, sixteen years ago.

This year, two days before my birthday, myself and my sister started the preparations for the big day. Both of us invited our friends to the party along with our relatives. Early in the morning on the actual day, I along with my parents visited Blind Association to donate a certain amount to their welfare fund.

Our friends started arriving at around 5.30 P.M. I received all my friends and made them sit comfortably in the colorfully decorated room. They all presented me gifts nicely packed in colored wrappers

I also got a nice surprise on seeing my grandparents who live in the U.S. They had specially flown to India to attend my birthday. They also gifted me nice presents.

When everyone gathered in the room my mother brought the chocolate cake with seventeen candles on it. I blew off the candles and cut the cake which was later distributed to the guests present at the party. Everyone sang Happy Birthday and wished a bright future for me.

We all played a lot of interesting games. As the night came over, it was time to wrap up the party.

I celebrated my birthday with a lot of laughter, pomp, and show.

How I Celebrated My Birthday- 100 Words

When I turned 16, I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate by going out with my friends and enjoying myself. But what I didn’t account for was my birthday falling on a weekend and so all of my friends were unavailable.  So instead of having a fun night out, I ended up staying in and watching Netflix all day. Although it wasn’t the best birthday experience, at least I got to spend it alone. And that’s okay; sometimes you just need some time alone to recharge and reflect on your life. So if you’re feeling down on your birthdays, remember that everyone experiences them differently and that there are plenty of other ways to celebrate without involving other people.

Long Essay on My Birthday Celebration- 1000 Words

Essay on My Birthday Celebration edumantra

This year was a bit different than most. For one, I turned 26 which, considering that I’m now an adult, felt like an eternity ago. And secondly, I celebrated my birthday in a unique way – by traveling to five countries over the course of 10 days. While it was undoubtedly an adventure and a new experience for me, it wasn’t the only thing that made my birthday special. In fact, there was something else that happened that day that I’ll never forget. I met someone special. Now before you start thinking that this person is just some random stranger I met on my trip, let me explain a little bit more. We met while I was in Morocco and he ended up staying with me for pretty much the entire trip. We shared meals and conversations, laughed together and even got a little romantic in some of the quieter moments. Needless to say, it was an unforgettable experience and something that I’ll never forget. So what does all of this have to do with writing? Well, as cliché as it sounds, writing is ultimately about storytelling. And what better way to celebrate my 26th birthday than by sharing my story with you?

I started Planning My Birthday Party a Week in Advance

how i celebrate my birthday essay edumantra

My birthday is just around the corner, and I have been planning it for weeks in advance! I decided on a unique theme for my party, and I am so excited to pull everything off. My friends and family are all going to have a blast! Here’s what my party will look like: I decided to have a “Birthday Bash” theme for my party. This means that there will be lots of fun decorations, games, and surprises waiting for everyone who attends! To start things off, I hired a clown to come entertain the kids while we eat our picnic lunch. After lunch, everyone is going to get into their respective party costumes and head over to one of the attainment rooms (the other one being reserved as a photo zone!). There, they’ll be able to enjoy some fun games such as “Pin The Tail On The Donkey” or “Ring Around The Rosie”. Once everyone has had enough fun playing games, it’s time for the big surprise! Every guest will receive an invitation card with instructions on how they can join in on the special birthday performance by my favorite singer (whose identity I am keeping secret until showtime!). Everyone who participates will make me very happy (especially if they can perform a unique or hilarious song)! After the performance is complete, everyone will gather back in the main room for cake and presents. It’s going to be an amazing day full of surprises!

I Invited all of My Close Friends and Family Members

For my birthday, I invited all of my close friends and family members. We had a BBQ at a 5 star hotel and it was so much fun. I’m grateful for all the amazing people in my life.

I Arranged for a DJ to Play Music Throughout the Party

To celebrate my birthday, I asked a DJ to play music throughout the party. This was a great way to keep everyone entertained and happy! It was also great for keeping the party going all night long. The DJ made sure to play all of my favorite songs, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend hiring a DJ for your next party!

I Picked out the Perfect Birthday Cake

I spent my birthday weekend in New York City with my family. On Saturday morning, we took a walk around Central Park and had brunch at a restaurant in the park. After, we went to the top of the observation deck at Rockefeller Center to take some pictures, and then headed down to Times Square for some shopping. We ended up getting dinner at a pizza place near our hotel before coming back home. On Sunday, we woke up early and took a taxi over to the Brooklyn Museum where I saw an exhibit of African art. Afterwards, my parents took us all out for breakfast at a small diner down the street from our hotel. We walked around Flatbush Avenue for awhile before heading back to our room and watching some TV. That night, I got ready for my party at my friend’s apartment in Chelsea. It was really fun catching up with everyone there and playing games like Truth or Dare. Afterward, we all went out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant nearby. My friend gave me a really nice birthday present – an airline ticket to go visit her in Chile next month! Overall, it was a great weekend – I loved spending time with my family and friends, experiencing different parts of New York City, and eating delicious food!

I served Snacks and Drinks Throughout the Night

I served snacks and drinks throughout the night, in addition to providing decorations and a special cake. I had my parents come over and we all had a great time. It was really fun to get together with them and celebrate my birthday.

I Hung Out with My Friends

I had the best birthday party ever! I was with my friends and we had a blast. We ate pizza and ice cream, played games, and danced all night. It was so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again next year.

I Got a Lot of Gifts

I celebrated my birthday with a lot of family and friends. I got a lot of gifts, but the best gift was spending time with them. We ate cake and laughed until it hurt. It was the best birthday ever!

I Enjoyed Myself

I enjoyed myself by going out with my friends for dinner, then going to a movie. I also baked some cake and had a few drinks with my family. Overall, it was a great birthday and I’m glad that I celebrated it the way that I did.

Thanks for reading my essay on how I celebrated my birthday! It was a lot of fun and I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about it. To start, we hosted a small get-together with some of my closest friends. We had burgers and fries (of course) and played games together until the late hours of the night. After eating all that junk food, we went out for ice cream cake at a local joint. It was all very nostalgic and fun – I can’t wait to do it again next year!

Birthdays: we all have them, and we all want them to be special. You can’t go wrong with a classic birthday party, but if you want to spice things up a bit this year, we’ve got you covered with a list of unique and exciting ways to celebrate your big day, from going to a concert to having a picnic in the park. Keep reading for tips to making the most of your special day below! This article is based on an interview with Christina Millikin, founder and former CEO of Glow Events. Check out the full interview here.

Things You Should Know

  • Celebrate your birthday by seeing a play, having a picnic in the park, visiting an escape room, or just chilling at home.
  • Or go the traditional route and have a birthday party. Either do the planning yourself, or have friends or family plan the shindig for you.
  • Whatever you do for your big day, don't stress too much: just relax and enjoy the ride. You deserve it!

Step 1 Go to a concert or play.

  • Make the outing really special by stopping for drinks or dinner beforehand, or grabbing dessert (did someone say birthday cake?) at your favorite restaurant afterward.

Step 2 Have a picnic.

  • For a more festive feel, bring cake, balloons, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner (or not-so-subtly hint to your friends to do it) and turn your picnic into your own magical outdoor birthday party.

Step 3 Go swimming.

  • There are escape rooms centered on all kinds of themes, from ancient Egypt to Harry Potter. See what cool escape rooms there are in your area, or make an adventure of it and road trip to your room of choice!

Step 5 Go bar-hopping.

  • Some places may even give you free shots if you tell them it’s your birthday. Picklebacks all around!

Step 6 Have a spa day.

  • From facials to cucumber water to mud baths to much-needed massages, a spa day is a great way to show yourself some self-love!
  • Buying spa products can get expensive quickly, but asking everyone to bring their favorite lotions, masks, and nail polishes is a great way to save money and make your guests feel more involved.

Step 7 Buy yourself a present.

  • Sleep in. Have a big breakfast and relax.
  • Cook a favorite meal, or watch those rental movies you haven’t had the time for.
  • Invite friends or family over for a casual hang, or enjoy the alone time!

Step 1 Look at your bucket list for inspiration.

  • Not only will picking something from your bucket list guarantee the day will be memorable, but checking an item off your list will also help you feel successful and more accomplished! And why shouldn’t it? You’re getting things done!

Step 2 Set a birthday budget for yourself.

  • Consider activities you can do without leaving your hometown or spending less than $100. [3] X Research source
  • Create a total budget for everything—and we mean everything . For instance, if you’re planning a party, you’ll need to make a list of all the different vendors that you're going to need to hire: venue, caterer, florist, musicians, etc., and then make a budget for each particular category.

Step 3 If it’s a big year, consider planning your celebration around it.

  • Give yourself permission to go all out if it’s a big year, but still keep to a budget.
  • There are lots of helpful resources out there to make it easier (and cheaper) to take that trip around the world you’ve always dreamed of—for instance, if you want to travel on a budget, consider going out of season for cheaper flights and lodging (even if it means putting off your trip until your birthday is over).

Step 1 Plan your party.

  • Decide what you’ll serve. Are you having a full dinner or just drinks and appetizers? Think of who’s coming and consider what they might like. Are your guests more carnivores? Vegetarians? If you know your guests’ preferences, use that knowledge.
  • Consider the climate when planning your party . If it’s cold, warm dips and hot bread can be a relatively simple path. If your birthday falls in the warmer months (or if you live in a hotter region) cool drinks, fruits, and cold dips are great.
  • Consider your guests’ enjoyment, but don’t overthink it: just plan a party that you would want to attend, and good times will be had by all.

Step 2 Get close friends and family involved.

  • If you want to lift even more of the burden, don’t have the party at your house: have it at someone else’s house, an event space, or even a hotel room or Airbnb.

Step 3 Ask guests to contribute to the party.

  • Potlucks are a great way to make your friends a part of the cooking. Ask everyone to bring a dish, or create a signup sheet with an online invite service for coordination of dishes.
  • Know anyone who is known amongst friends for a special dish or dessert they make? Ask them if they would like to make it for your birthday: they’ll feel appreciated, and so will you!

Step 1 Be flexible.

  • When things don’t go exactly as you planned, go with it—it’s your birthday, and, well, you can cry if you want to, but there’s really no need. Everyone will have a good time if the host or guest of honor is relaxed and enjoying themselves, so that’s all you need to worry about.
  • Things not going according to plan often makes for a great story. So if the dog gets in your cake or your BFF gets drunk and dances on the table singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” roll with it (and take pics).

Step 2 Let yourself be pampered.

  • Pamper yourself also: sleep late, wear your favorite outfit, get some quality spa or massage time, or have a luxurious bath followed by chocolates.

Step 3 Put aside your responsibilities for a day.

  • If possible, get your birthday (or the day after if you’re planning on being up late) off from work. Take the day and enjoy it.

About This Article

Dev Murphy, MA

To celebrate your birthday, start by deciding where you want to go or what you want to do, since your birthday should be a day that’s all about you. For example, you may want to go to a movie or play, or have a picnic with some friends. Alternatively, pick something from your bucket list, like eating at a particular restaurant or visiting a special place. You can also throw yourself a birthday party, such as a backyard barbecue or a potluck dinner, where guests can bring food, drinks, or supplies for the party instead of gifts. Why Easter brings me back to church

Even though i don’t practice in earnest anymore, memories and community give me a reason to return every spring, by gabriella ferrigine.

“Please — come join us in the cafeteria after Mass has concluded!”

Father Ariel’s jaunty voice echoed from where he was standing at the slabbed marble pulpit, as he smiled out at the congregation. His family, who had arrived from the Philippines in droves to celebrate his 50th birthday, beamed from the first several rows of glossy, varnished pews.

I’m not an atheist per se, but trying to find an equilibrium with faith has undoubtedly become a game of mental Tetris.

Mid-morning light filtered through stained glass depicting saints and the Stations of the Cross, casting soft pinks and blues and greens across the church: our local parish, St. James. Sun illuminated the top of Father Ariel’s head, and behind him, a domed mural of the stages of Jesus’ life — his birth in a manger, his crucifixion atop Calvary, and his resurrection after emerging from a stone sepulchre — seemed to swell higher with every slow, measured note of music from the raftered choir.

It was a Sunday morning in April, not exactly Easter but right around the time. The smell of incense — a combination of frankincense and myrrh — leached from every corner of the space, creating a somewhat soporific effect. I pictured my family, friends and neighbors gently falling asleep to its bitter, powdery aroma, like Dorothy  did in the poppy field. Everything felt buoyant and peaceful.

My family and many other parishioners — mainly gentle, geriatric hordes — joined Father Ariel with his multitude of relatives in my middle-school cafeteria for an authentic Filipino feast. Side dishes of pearly quail eggs, roasted fish and meats, bright salads and an array of desserts adorned every inch of table space, the very same where I ate many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my youth. At the center of it all was a huge roast pig, or lechón, with delicate, crisped skin. I looked at the pig’s face, then at the people ambling around the dingy, linoleum floors, and immediately felt love.

This was nearly 10 years ago, back during a time when I went to Church every Sunday and consistently prayed to God. I don’t consider myself a particularly religious person anymore. I’m not an atheist per se, but trying to find an equilibrium with faith has undoubtedly become a game of mental Tetris. Sure, Jesus seemed like a pretty cool guy — to me, his message has always unequivocally been "love,” in a broader sense. I’m on board with that.

But I still remain immensely put off by how Catholicism’s sordid underbelly has blended into sociopolitical life, underpinning the dismantling of women’s reproductive rights and enabling sexual abusers. I find myself still clinging to it largely because it’s woven tightly into many people I love. It’s a perturbing relationship; I feel as though my continued shunning of organized religion has in a sense estranged me from the memory of some very important people.

And yet, Easter and springtime always bring me back to church. I find myself craving, not exactly the scriptures and the teachings embedded in them, but how the space evokes the memories of people I love — chiefly my maternal grandmother and my mom — and an inclusive sense of community.

A deeply spiritual person, my grandma — born in a small Bolivian jungle village called Riberalta — spent her teenage years living in a convent with a U.S.-based congregation of nuns performing foreign missionary work. She was readying to enter the sisterhood when she met my grandfather, a Sicilian and civil engineer volunteering with a Catholic mission group to help build new infrastructure in Riberalta. They returned to America together and settled in Bayonne, New Jersey, joined in a union forged out of a shared devotion to God and each other.

Though my mom didn’t pray a daily rosary or make pilgrimages to Lourdes like my grandma, she was deeply affected by her religious upbringing, a heritage she inculcated her five children with through weekly mass, and offering up nightly intentions along with prayers before dinner: family and friends who were sick or had died, poverty and homelessness, wartime conflict, our cat Sweet Pea’s hypothyroidism.

In my grandmother’s house and my own, the iconography of Jesus and other religious figures was everywhere, peppering walls and mantelpieces alongside family photos and wedding albums. Each time one of my more than 25 cousins or I received a sacrament — Baptism, First Holy Eucharist, Confirmation — a sprawling, family-wide party followed, usually at an Italian restaurant with a generically benevolent, pot-bellied owner who would toddle around and ask, “How yous all likin’ the food?” And of course, there was always a large white sheet cake, piped in bubbled fonts: “God Bless ____!”

Seeing as my mom’s eight siblings were spread out across central New Jersey, I essentially ran the gauntlet of various Catholic parishes in our area for different holidays and events. I had my favorite churches. St. James retained the top position. Then came St. Michael’s, a red-bricked church that was famous for its live-animal manger display during the Christmas season. Holy Cross — located in one of the more affluent towns in my county — had a stunning interior, but its reputation had always been somewhat sullied in my mind from a 2006 embezzlement incident .

While I was able to evade formal liturgical participation, my three younger sisters were all urged to be altar servers, helping St. James’ priests — mostly middle-aged men from the Phillippines and India — prepare and proceed with weekly Sunday mass. One sister recalled a time when she and another altar server accidentally spilled open a bag of already-consecrated Eucharist wafers as they were preparing for mass in the wood-paneled sacristy.

“Oh! Uh, don’t worry girls — I’ll consume these later,” the priest said when he walked in and saw them scooping the body of Christ off the floor and into Ziploc bags.

Another time several years ago, my family was running late for Easter Sunday mass, half of us with our hair still wet. “Overflow,” an usher posted outside the church doors said as we approached, jerking his thumb toward the rear parking lot where the grammar school was located. Given that creasters (Catholics who only attend church on Christmas and Easter) come out of the woodwork every winter and spring, tardy worshippers are forced to attend the secondary service, held in the gymnasium or auditorium.

From my seat in a metal folding chair, nostalgia washed over me as the priest carried a gold crucifix across the same floor where I’d once played dodgeball, toward the makeshift altar where I’d watched classmates act out a rendition of “The Little Mermaid.”

I feel as though my continued shunning of organized religion has in a sense estranged me from the memory of some very important people.

I spent last Easter in Newport, Rhode Island with my family for a short holiday vacation. The weekend was oceanic cliffs and Gilded Age mansions and a kaleidoscopic assortment of saltwater taffy. On Easter Sunday, we walked from our quaint bed and breakfast to St. Mary’s, Our Lady of the Isle, where JFK and Jackie O wed in September of 1953. We took turns waiting outside with our two Great Pyrenees, who had reaped the benefits of Newport’s reputation for being dog-friendly.

Ahead of the homily, the part of the service when the priest explains the Gospel reading in further detail, I elected to relieve my mom of dog duty, knowing she wouldn’t want to miss the crux of the mass.

As I turned toward the door to trade off with her, the sharp New England morning air — and an emotional pang — made me bristle. I didn’t want to leave. Mashed tightly in hard-backed pews alongside other Catholics, loyalists and creasters alike, I felt a distinct sense of calm. The very same that came to me years ago as I gazed at a pig’s snout.

This Easter, we’ll be going back to St. James. Father Ariel is no longer at the parish — I don’t know many of the priests there anymore, my connection to the parish steadily eroded by distance, time and sheer obstinance on my part. It’s an elegiac relationship, compounded by the recent passing of my grandmother, who embodied holiness and unadulterated love in every sense.

And while I may not take the time to philosophize about my salvation on Sunday, I’m certain I’ll think of her and what my being there would mean to her. For me, that’s enough to return every spring.

Why Didn’t My Sister Include Me in Her ‘Family’ Birthday Party?

A reader’s feelings are hurt after offering to fly to celebrate her sister’s 70th birthday only to be told not to bother, as “all her family” would be there.

By Philip Galanes

My sister and I live in different parts of the country. We’re not close, but we are cordial and visit each other every year or two. She is about to turn 70, so I offered to fly halfway across the country to help her celebrate. She declined, saying that “all her family” — her kids and grandkids — were coming for a party, so it wasn’t a good time for a visit. I stay in a hotel when I visit her, so it’s not a matter of putting me up, and there are no hard feelings between us. I am hurt not to be included. I thought I was family, too. I might have accepted a white lie (“I’m not doing anything special”), but telling me I’m not invited to her party seems hostile. Thoughts?

I’m sorry your feelings are hurt. I’m also struck by how readily you placed yourself at the center of your sister’s birthday — in the same breath as reporting you aren’t close to her. (I get it, of course: We are all the starring players in our lives.) I agree that your sister chose her words poorly, but it doesn’t take a big leap to decipher what she really meant: She wants to focus on her children and grandchildren when they visit.

Many siblings drift over time (and distance). And your “cordial” relationship with your sister is not uncommon: You may have been central to each other — formative, even — in early life but not so much today. That doesn’t take away from the warmth you feel for each other. She was simply being honest when she said she wanted to give her undivided attention to her children and grandchildren on her birthday. She may not get to see them as often as she would like.

Your visit probably constitutes a different kind of special occasion: more nostalgic and rooted in the past. And a gentler reading of your sister’s response is that she didn’t want you to fly halfway across the country and feel neglected. So, I hope you can get past your hurt feelings and find another time for a sisterly celebration.

Nursing a Grudge to Honor a Friendship?

In college, my best friend and I dated another pair of best friends. After we graduated, five years ago, the other couple broke up, but my partner and I are still together. My friend’s ex was unkind to her during their breakup, and she still resents him — even though they are both in other relationships now. The problem: The ex is moving to our city. My partner would like me to spend time with his friend and his girlfriend occasionally, but I think my friend would be hurt if I did. (And my partner will be hurt if I don’t!) Advice?

COLLEGE FRIEND

I admire your loyalty. But who among us hasn’t been “unkind” during a breakup — much less a youthful one from years ago? In the absence of egregious behavior, try hanging out with your partner’s friend and his girlfriend to see how you mesh as a foursome. (You may not!)

Tell your friend about it. But remember: You are not asking for her permission. That gives an old grudge more oxygen than it deserves. You are merely supporting your partner’s friendship. And for the love of rom coms, please don’t try to engineer a rapprochement between the exes. Some things are better left in the past.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wait

My husband’s 80-year-old father died two months ago. Their relationship was strained for most of my husband’s life, but they managed to repair it in recent years. My husband helped with caregiving during his father’s final months and grew closer to his stepmother. During his final weeks, my husband’s father mentioned a will, and his wife told my husband that he and his sister would receive equal bequests. But his stepmother hasn’t mentioned the will since her husband died. (She is the executor.) Is there a tactful way to ask a grieving widow about this?

DAUGHTER-IN-LAW

I respect your (indirect) humane question here: How soon is too soon? That depends on the widow, of course, and her grief. But it may be useful to know that, in many states, executors have three months to notify beneficiaries after a will has been filed with the court — which your husband’s stepmother may not yet have done. So, try to be patient and frame your question as an offer of help: with her house, the will or anything else she may need during a difficult time.

It’s a Rave! (From Whom? Never Mind That.)

A dear friend self-published a book with Amazon. She asked me and other friends to let her write fake rave reviews under our accounts. I refused! But I see obviously fake reviews online praising her book. We have been friends for decades, but I am turned off by her behavior. Any advice?

Start with some compassion for your friend. One of the hardest parts of creative work, in my experience, is discovering how little the world cares about it. (“But I slaved over that novel!”) I doubt that many people will be taken in by a rave review from “Burt in Des Moines,” and eventually, I hope, your friend will learn that the only reliable reward for writing is the pleasure of writing itself.

For help with your awkward situation, send a question to [email protected], Philip Galanes on Facebook or @SocialQPhilip on X.

Coping With Grief and Loss

Living through the loss of a loved one is a universal experience. but the ways in which we experience and deal with the pain can largely differ..

What Experts Say:   Psychotherapists say that grief is not a problem to be solved , but a process to be lived through, in whatever form it may take.

How to Help: Experiencing a sudden loss can be particularly traumatic. Here are some ways to offer your support to someone grieving.

A New Diagnosis: Prolonged grief disorder, a new entry in the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual, applies to those who continue to struggle long after a loss .

The Biology of Grief: Grief isn’t only a psychological experience. It can affect the body too, but much about the effects remains a mystery .

Comforting Memories:  After a person dies, their digital scraps — text messages, emails, playlists and voicemails — are left behind. They can offer solace to their grieving families .

Grieving the Loss of a Pet:   Counseling. Grief-group sessions. The number of resources for coping with a pet’s death  has grown in recent years.

Celine Dion, 56, looks phenomenal in tiny mini dress in head-turning footage to celebrate her birthday

The my heart will go on hitmaker celebrated her birthday on march 30.

Celine Dion

Celine Dion has experimented with her style over the years, and on Saturday, fans were given the chance to go on a trip down memory lane as the singer's iconic stage and fashion moments were put together in a tribute montage to mark her 56th birthday.

The My Heart Will Go On hitmaker has rocked some head-turning looks over time, including a glittery mini dress while performing on stage, as well as a floaty floor-length gown and leather gloves.

The video was put together by Celine's team, who uploaded it onto her Instagram page.

In the caption, it read: "Happy Birthday dear Celine. We love you! - Team Celine." Celine will no doubt be surrounded by her family, including her three sons, on her special day.

She has been keeping a low profile since being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022, which has stopped her being able to perform.
