15 Prompts for Talking and Writing About the Holidays and the New Year

Share your traditions, weigh in on a seasonal debate, write a creative story or reflect on the year behind you while preparing for the one ahead.

Hands fill up plates from dishes of food on a table with a red tablecloth. A bowl with a green salad is in the center of the table, and next to it is a casserole dish of macaroni and cheese and a candleholder with six red candles.

By Natalie Proulx

Merry Christmas , happy Hanukkah , joyous Kwanzaa and happy New Year.

To celebrate the season, we’ve rounded up 15 prompts we’ve written over the years that you can use for writing or discussion in the classroom, among your friends or at your holiday gatherings. You might talk about your beloved family traditions, weigh in on a seasonal debate, write a holiday-themed short story or poem, or reflect on the year behind you and prepare for the one ahead.

Each of these prompts was inspired by a New York Times article, essay or image, and many of them are still open for comment for students 13 or older.

For more writing prompts and conversation-starters, see our related column .

1. What Holiday or Holidays Are You Celebrating This Month?

Hanukkah? Christmas? Kwanzaa? A combination? Something else? Use this prompt to talk or write about your own holiday celebrations — or those that other families have that you wish you could be a part of.

2. What Are Your Family Traditions?

Students who weighed in on this prompt told us about preparing 12 meals for Ukrainian Christmas, making the haft sin for Nowruz, lighting the candles on the menorah for Hanukkah and playing the game White Elephant. What rituals help you mark the holidays or reflect on the year?

3. What Foods Will Be on Your Holiday Table?

Food is an important part of holiday celebrations all over the world. What dishes will be on your table this year? You might talk about the best festive snacks and finger foods with this prompt , or take inspiration from Lunar New Year and share your favorite holiday food traditions with this prompt .

4. How Do You Decorate for the Season?

Traditional or modern? Over-the-top or more understated? Discuss the way your family decorates for the holidays — or how you wish it did — with these two prompts. How do you think you will choose to decorate your home when you are older?

5. What Role Does Religion Play in Your Holiday Celebrations?

Several of the winter holidays have religious roots. In “ Saying Goodbye to Hanukkah ,” a writer asks whether you can celebrate traditionally religious holidays without religion. What do you think? Read the essay and then use this prompt to talk or write about how much religion is a part of your life and your holiday celebrations.

6. Do You Look Forward to Family Get-Togethers This Time of Year?

The approaching holidays often mean spending more time with family members, who come from near and far. Who do you look forward to seeing this time of year? Do you enjoy large family get-togethers or do you find them overwhelming? Use this prompt to talk or write about your most memorable family gathering.

7. What Makes a Great Gift?

What are you giving this holiday season? What are you hoping to get, or what have you already received? Use this prompt to share your gift-giving dos and don’ts, talk about the best and worst gifts you’ve gotten and weigh in on the adage “It’s better to give than to receive.”

Or, use this prompt to debate the commercialization of Christmas and whether experiences make better gifts than physical items do.

8. Should Phones Ever Be a Part of Family or Holiday Gatherings?

Now it’s time for a holiday debate: Are phones and other electronics welcome at your family or holiday gatherings? Do you think they should be? Can they ever be helpful? Or are they a distraction from spending quality time with your loved ones? Discuss these questions and others with our related prompt .

9. What Will You Be Watching, Listening To and Wearing This Season?

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”? Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”? An ugly Christmas sweater, perhaps? Use these prompts to debate the best and worst holiday films , share what’s on your seasonal playlist and plan your special holiday outfit .

10. What Can You Do for Others This Year?

This year, Nov. 29 was #GivingTuesday on social media, a day when you were invited to take a break from buying things, and, instead, show generosity to others. The Giving Tuesday website suggests thinking about it this way:

Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.

What do you have to give? What people, issues or causes are important to you? What can you do this holiday season to give back? Tell us here , and then get more inspiration from the Opinion section’s Holiday Giving Guide .

11. What Seasonal Story Could These Images Tell?

Related Picture Prompt

christmas and new year celebration essay

A magical gift. A sledding adventure. A family gathering. What story could these images from around The Times tell? Choose one or more of the holiday- and winter-themed picture prompts from the slide show above, and then write a creative short story, poem or memoir inspired by them.

Another option? Use one of these images to play Exquisite Corpse with your friends, family or classmates: One person starts by writing or saying aloud the first line of a story based on the image, and then another person adds on, and so on.

12. What Were the Best and Worst Things About 2022 for You?

The Times’s art and culture critics often end the year by compiling a series of “best of” lists — the best TV shows , movies , art , songs , podcasts , books , comedy , poetry , theater , dance performances and more .

What would be on your “best of the year” list? What would be on your “worst of the year” list? What art or pop culture did you love or loathe? What news, sporting events or viral social media moments did you think were great or terrible? What were the most notable aspects of your personal, family or academic life? Use this prompt to help you make your “best” and “worst” lists and then compare them to those of other students.

13. What Would You Pick as Word of the Year?

Every year the Oxford English Dictionary selects a “word of the year” that is meant “to reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations” of the previous year. For 2022, the publisher chose “goblin mode.” What do you think of this choice? What is one word or phrase that you think sums up this year? Weigh in on our related prompt .

14. What Was the Best Day of Your Year?

When you look back on the past year, what would you say was your most memorable day? Were you celebrating a big life event or achievement, like getting your license? Or were you doing something more mundane — perhaps talking to a friend on the phone, making a meal for your family or taking a long walk alone? What made that day so special to you?

Even though this prompt was written in 2021, you can still use the article and questions to take some time to appreciate your favorite day of this past year.

15. Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions?

As one year ends and another begins, will you take stock of all that you have (or haven’t) accomplished and make resolutions for the year ahead? Or, like other Gen Zers, according to this article , do you set goals all year round? Use this prompt to talk or write about the various goals or self-improvements you are currently working toward, as well as those you’d like to focus on in the New Year.

Essay on Christmas in English for Students - 100, 200 and 500 Words Christmas Essay

The world celebrates Christmas on December 25 everyday. Christmas Day is a time to come together with family and friends, exchange gifts, eat delicious food, and spend precious time cooking delicious treats to give. Families typically hang red stockings on Christmas Eve, sing joyful Christmas day carols, and set out milk and cookies by the tree or by the fireplace in the hopes that Santa Claus would visit and bring them gifts and blessings. Many people honour the birth of Jesus by decorating a Christmas tree, decking it out in lights, and exchanging gifts with loved ones. Around this time, a lot of people begin to plan their New Year's parties.

Christmas serves as a reminder of the value of sharing and giving with friends and family. It is believed that the festival of Christmas and birth of Jesus marks the beginning of wonderful things in the world. It is often a time to reflect on nature and the reason for our existence. Despite being a Christian holiday, Christmas is one of those occasions that is celebrated by people of all faiths and religions worldwide. The heart of this celebration is what brings people together so strongly.

Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the Messiah. The origins of the Christmas holiday can be traced back to the mid-fourth century in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey. Christians congregated to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Christ during the celebration, and it was customary to consume bread and wine during this time. Christians began to celebrate the festival of Christmas by lighting candles and singing carols by candlelight throughout Europe. Christmas is now observed by people of many faiths in a variety of locations around the world. Many people remember the birth of Jesus by decorating a joyous Christmas tree, dressing it out in lights, and exchanging gifts with friends and family.

The festival of Christmas serves as a reminder of the value of sharing and giving with friends and family. Christmas demonstrates the value of pleasure and joy. It is also a chance for us to make amends for past behaviours that we aren't proud of. It is often a time to reflect on nature and the reason for our existence. Christmas celebrations are often followed by New Year’s celebrations. Students get a week long winter break which they spend with their family and friends. Everyone has their own Christmas rituals that they celebrate with each other—while some write down all the important events that happened over the year, others make Christmas delicacies together.

Many people believe that Christmas is solely a Christian holiday, and if contemporary evidence is to be taken into account, they would be correct. But, Christmas has its roots in the old Roman Empire, where it was first celebrated a few decades after Jesus' birth. Saturnalia, a Pagan festival, served as the inspiration for Christmas. The goal of this celebration was to mark the end of winter and the return of the sun. Christians began celebrating Christmas on the final day of Saturnalia in the fourth century. The goal was to encourage the pagans to view this time as positive. As a result, many pagans turned to Christianity on the promise that they may continue to celebrate their traditions.

My Christmas Holiday

Christmas is a time for gifting and sharing, but for me, the main focus is on having fun. I really enjoy myself at this time of year. Family is important to me, therefore I try to spend as much time with them as I can. The highlight of the holiday season is food, including candies, tamales, doughnuts, pastries, cake, rice, beans, and the gifts that we all get. Family, close friends, and holiday gatherings are some of the things that I enjoy the most.

On Christmas Eve, I get up early and get ready to clean the house. My relatives then begin to visit once the house is clean. We discuss old stories that have occurred in our lives over the course of the year during the time I spend with my family. Tamales are a significant Christmas tradition; it's a long process to make tamales, so it's the greatest time for my mother and aunts to catch up.

We assemble in the living room to open our presents at midnight. Afterwards, I tidy up the mess left by all the gifts. My friends visit the next day to wish Merry Christmas. We usually do secret Santa so no one has to buy presents for everyone, instead everyone gets one friend for whom they have to buy a gift. This year, I got a heart shaped pendant from my friend along with socks that had Santa and his reindeer printed on it. We all clicked many pictures wearing red and white Christmas sweaters and scarves. We usually end our day watching Christmas movies till late at night and eating the leftovers from dinner.

Essay on Christmas Day in 150 Words

Christmas is a joyous occasion with unique and important religious and cultural significance. Every year, this day is celebrated on December 25, 2023, to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the worship figure in Christianity. Christians believe Jesus to be the son of God and the saviour of humanity. Christmas is the time for reflection on the Nativity story, spreading love, strengthening bonds, and spreading goodwill.

Beyond its religious roots, Christmas has evolved into a global cultural festival. Decorating homes and streets, exchanging gifts, having family gatherings, and making traditional meals are some of the things people do on Christmas. Elders get ready as Santa in red and white costumes to surprise their kids with their desired gifts or wishes.

Christmas Essay in 300 Words

Christmas is a globally celebrated festival. It is a blend of religious reverence and cultural festivities. If we go with the reason to celebrate Christmas, then, as per the Christians’ beliefs, it is the birthday of Jesus Christ, the God of Christians. Thus, this day has profound religious significance as well. The nativity story, recounted in the Bible, tells of the humble birth in Bethlehem, emphasising themes of hope, love, and salvation.

Beside its religious roots, this festival also has importance in building social faith and love. The iconic Christmas tree, often an evergreen conifer, is the primary tree decorated during the holiday season. This tree is a symbol of life and hope during the winter months. Families bring their own Christmas tree and decorate it with lights, ornaments, and tinsel with their kids. The drizzling lights illuminate the tree, and colourful ornaments add festive vibes.

Christmas serves as an occasion for reflection and gratitude. It prompts individuals to appreciate the blessings in their lives and to extend compassion to those less fortunate. The tradition of spreading cheer through carols, festive gatherings, and expressions of love reinforces the idea that Christmas is a season of warmth and togetherness.

New Year's Eve is a universal celebration that transcends cultural and caste boundaries, bringing joy to people worldwide. Celebrated with enthusiasm, people of all ages engage in various activities. Many schools and educational institutions observe a winter break, starting from Christmas Eve and extending until New Year's (January 1). The significance of New Year's lies in its representation of a fresh start, ushering in happiness as people bid farewell to the past year. This festive occasion symbolises hope and optimism, uniting individuals in the shared anticipation of new beginnings and the possibilities the upcoming year holds.

The New Year is a time for people to put all of their bad experiences behind them and take a positive step into the future. Everyone wishes for their own and their loved ones' happiness, health, and prosperity in the coming New Year. For children, a new year is incomplete without three things: a Christmas tree, a New Year's Eve party with new dresses, and the required New Year's essay as part of their winter vacation homework).

How do People Around the World Celebrate?

A unique custom has been followed these days in every household – a New Year tree. In order to define this, it is nothing but the Christmas tree that gets decorated during the festive season and year-end. All the family members take part in decorating the Christmas tree/ New Year tree with various kinds of toys, bells, stars, candies, mistletoe, and colourful fairy lights.

New Year’s day is followed by different other customs and traditions in every household across the globe. Each culture celebrates this day in its own unique way. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their loved ones. The preparation begins with buying gifts, decorating houses, and purchasing new clothes.

India's New Year's Eve Celebration

Everyone in India celebrates New Year on different days depending on their religion. Nonetheless, due to the influence of Western civilization, most people now celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 st as well.

The advent of the New Year in India is marked by vibrant and diverse celebrations that resonate with cultural richness. It is a time when people extend heartfelt congratulations to their friends and family, sharing the joy of a fresh beginning. Hindus, in particular, embark on a tradition of thorough house cleaning, adorning their homes with saffron flags that symbolize auspiciousness.

The religious fervor escalates as bhajans echo in temples, creating a serene atmosphere. Special prayers are offered, fostering a spiritual ambiance across various religious sites. The New Year becomes a canvas for cultural expression, with events like Kavi Sammelan, Bhajan Sandhya, and Kalash Yatra captivating audiences in different locations. These festivities underscore the unity in diversity as India welcomes the promise of a new year with enthusiasm and reverence.

January 1 as New Year’s Day

The early Roman Calendar has 10 months and 304 days, and each new year begins on the spring equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, later added the months of Januarius and Februarius to the Roman Calendar in 1713 B.C.

Over the centuries, the calendar has been out of sync with the Sun. The emperor Caesar then decided to solve the mystery in 46 B.C. by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of the time. Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which was very similar to the modern Gregorian calendar, which is still used by the majority of countries around the world.

Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour Janus, the Roman god of beginnings (whose two faces allowed him to seem back to the past and forward into the longer term which was a part of his reforms). To commemorate the New Year, the Romans exchanged gifts and offered sacrifices to God Janus. They also went to loud parties and adorned their homes with laurel branches.

Traditions for the New Year

Many countries celebrate New Year from the evening of December 31 (also known as New Year's Eve) until the early hours of January 1 st , often with several meals and snacks to bring good fortune in the coming year. Grapes are known as a symbol of hope for the coming months and are thus used by people in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Legumes, such as lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States, have been a traditional New Year's dish in many countries and places because they are thought to resemble coins and future financial success. Pork is also a popular New Year's dish in some countries, including Austria, Hungary, Cuba, and Portugal, and it is believed that pigs represent progress and prosperity.

Rice pudding with an almond hidden inside it is served on New Year's Eve in many countries, including Sweden and Norway. It is said that whoever finds the almond will be blessed with 12 months of good fortune. In contrast, ring-shaped cakes and pastries are served during the New Year in the Netherlands, Greece, Mexico, and other countries. It denotes that the year has completed a full circle.

The Importance of the New Year

New Year's Eve is like a big, happy party that everyone in the world joins! It's a special time when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the brand-new one with excitement. The New Year is like a magical reset button; it encourages us to start fresh, try new things, and bring more happiness into our lives.

In the New Year, we look back at the things we did in the past year and learn from them. If we make any mistakes, it's okay because the New Year gives us a chance to do better. We make promises to ourselves, called resolutions, to be kind, work hard, or learn something new. It's like setting goals for ourselves.

The New Year is a bit like a festival, but instead of lights and decorations, it's full of positive vibes and energy. This energy helps us tackle challenges and reach our goals. So, New Year's Eve is not just a date on the calendar; it's a special time that fills us with enthusiasm and makes our lives even more exciting!

New Year’s Short Essay

On New Year's Day, everyone puts on new clothes and congratulates one another. On the occasion of the New Year, many different types of programmes are held in schools. The event of the New Year retains various fireworks, dance competitions, singing competitions, and so on. At New Year's, the market is ablaze with colour, with colourful lights, and other decorative items adorning every surface. On the occasion of the New Year, some countries have a state holiday, so people go on picnics. The New Year brings with it new hopes; we should always be happy in any situation, good or bad.

On this day, everyone reflects on the significant events of the previous year and evaluates the circumstances under which the entire year was spent. And, to make amends for the shortcomings of the previous year, take a new oath on the auspicious occasion of the New Year and get involved in doing that work for the coming year with full hard work and dedication. The Western Civilization's New Year was celebrated in Babylon 4000 years ago, but it was held on March 21 st at the time. However, since the introduction of the Julian calendar, New Year's Day has been celebrated on January 1 st every year. Every year has 365 days, at the end of which the New Year is celebrated with great zeal. Because of the influence of Western civilization throughout the world, everyone now celebrates January 1 as New Year's Day.

Short Essay on Christmas in 400 words

Festivals are the biggest source of fun and happiness. Any upcoming festival keeps us energetic. We get all strength to work hard because we can enjoy ourselves during festivals. Christians have very few festivals. It is only during Easter and Christmas that they can have fun. So the winter is the time of their celebration. The world awaits the arrival of Christmas. They make preparations for a long period of time. So Christians rejoice the best during this festival.

Christmas is not just any festival. It is like the Janmasthami, where the Hindus celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna as a little baby. Just like Janmasthami, Christmas is the festival to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Lord of all Christians. He was born on 25th December at Bethlehem, in Jerusalem, in a stable. His mother is mother Mary and his father is Joseph.

Jesus and Krishna have lots of similarities. Both of them were shepherds. Both were born in a very humble household. Both of them preached about peace. They taught us not to hurt others, even plants and animals. Being kind to all was their biggest teaching. So Christmas is as beautiful as Janmashtami.

On the eve of Christmas, on 24th December night, people arrange a Christmas tree. They decorate it with gifts and lights. They also bake cakes and cookies. Lots of guests are invited. Those who are rich, throw parties at their houses to celebrate Christmas. On the morning of Christmas, they visit churches and pray to Jesus for the overall peace and well-being. They are offered bread and wine to eat as the blessings of Christ. After they return, their festival starts with sharing food and serving the poor.

The saints, popes, and nuns serve the needy as part of the celebration. The biggest fun of Christmas is Sants Claus. He arrives the night before Christmas and distributes gifts to good children. The kids rejoice at the gifts, which increases their happiness.

Now Christmas is not just a festival of the Christians. It is now for all. In India, everyone enjoys the winter vacation. Kolkata is one of the biggest attractions during this time. It lights up beautifully and people come out of their houses to have fun. Eating cakes, praying to God is now the ritual of all. Christmas is the best year-end celebration that soon passes into the new year.

10 lines on the new year in english, short paragraph on the new year, new year essay in english for class 3 – long essay, what will your child learn from the ‘new year’ essay.

The New Year is an exciting time, full of joy and celebration worldwide! People and families get together on the last night of December to celebrate and bring in the New Year. As an essay topic, the New Year is something most children can relate to and write about. Almost all families plan a holiday or even a party, so there’s always so much that the child can think and write about. Here, we show you how to write an essay on the New Year, on both short and long-form essay styles.

Remember these points when writing an essay on the New Year:

  • The New Year is a creative topic, so you can use plenty of ideas from your imagination to enrich the write-up.
  • One-line essays on the topic can be limited to general facts about the New Year and different ways to celebrate it.
  • A short paragraph on the New Year can focus on how you celebrate it with your family and friends.
  • A long essay on the subject can touch upon many points about the New Year without getting too detailed.

One-line essays are simple to write. When writing about this topic, stick to basic facts and write as many different things as possible. Here is how to write a 10-line essay on the New Year for classes 1 and 2:

  • January 1st is the first day of the New Year. According to the calendar, there are 12 months in a year.
  • The celebration of the New Year occurs on December 31st, which is the last day of the year.
  • On New Year’s eve, people celebrate with a lot of enthusiasm.
  • We all get together as a family on the last day of the year and wish each other well for the new year!
  • At midnight, when January 1st begins, we enter the new year.
  • People all around the world celebrate this day with parties and fireworks.
  • Our schools have Christmas vacation, and January 1st is a holiday.
  • On New Year, people make new resolutions.
  • The New Year is a fresh beginning for all people, where they can hope for something better in the future.
  • The New Year is my favourite time because my family goes on a short vacation every year!

A short essay is typically 100 to 150 words long. You can talk about various aspects of the New Year that you like in a short piece such as this one. Here is an example for a short essay on the New Year:

The New Year starts on January 1st of every year. It is the time to start over, make new resolutions, and look forward to a great future ahead. The New Year is a special time for all people as they feel a renewed sense of responsibility in their lives. However, the first day of the New Year always starts a bit slow for everyone as they are still tired from the party from the last day of the previous year. On the other hand, children happily look forward to the reopening of the school from the Christmas vacation. To conclude, every New Year is a step further to what can be a bright and prosperous future.

A long essay for class 3 on the topic of the New Year is an opportunity to get creative and put different ideas together. It is important to maintain a narrative to keep it coherent. Here is an example of a long essay on the New Year:

The New Year starts on January 1st of every year. However, the celebration for the New Year starts on December 31st – the last day of the year. Most people attend parties on New Year’s eve. The working people have gatherings at their workplace. Some take the evening off to attend events, while most families get together to celebrate. As the clock strikes 12 at midnight and the dials jump numbers to display a new date, people welcome the New Year with cheers and wishes. Many places also have amazing firework displays to entertain people who attend the parties.

What makes New Year special is the rejuvenating freshness it brings to everyone’s life. The calendar resets, giving everyone a year to plan their studies, jobs, and assignments. People feel like they can let go of the past and move on to a brighter future. The New Year is also a time for people to make resolutions. Whether aiming to score a distinction in the exam or exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body, the New Year is when everyone feels inspired.

Although different cultures have different calendars, the English calendar’s New Year is what is celebrated all around the world. Different cultures also have their own New Year. For example, the Chinese celebrate their New Year in February, while many Hindus in India celebrate it towards the end of March or the beginning of April. The dates may vary across different cultures, but the theme of New Year remains the same, which is renewal.

On the New Year, our family has a get-together. I get to meet my cousins and talk about the Christmas holidays and all the fun in store for the upcoming year. We buy new clothes in preparation for the day and even a big cake for the family. The cake is cut after midnight when the New Year commences.

The New Year is an opportunity for us to bring changes to our lives and make the best out of its opportunities. My goal every New Year is to concentrate more on my studies and hobbies and become better than I was before.

The New Year essay is almost always asked as an assignment or a writing activity in class when schools reopen during the first week of January. This essay is to help prepare your child to write a New Year essay on their own. They will find plenty of ideas in the essays mentioned above and examples for different types of essays.

An essay on the New Year is a topic children would enjoy writing. As essay writing is an important skill, this is the right topic to begin with. To write a great essay, you can use some of the ideas presented in the examples above and add some of your own.

Life provides us with many reasons to celebrate. Read this article for helpful essay examples and writing prompts you can use to write essays about celebration.

From honoring people on their birthdays, commemorating historical events, and holding family gatherings for the holidays, there seems to be a near-endless number of occasions to celebrate.  Celebrations help us feel good about ourselves and the milestones we have achieved. We commemorate things essential to us, whether joyful events like a birthday or Christmas or a sad event like a loved one’s death anniversary. They are also essential to our culture, as they help us stay connected to our roots and heritage and preserve longstanding traditions. Without a doubt, celebration plays an important role in everyone’s life.

If you’re having trouble writing essays about celebration, read the essay examples featured below.

Top 6 Essay Examples

1. festivals by everett smith, 2. i hate christmas. here’s why i’m celebrating it for the next 2 months. by elisabeth ovesen, 3. a birthday reflection by chava gal-or, 4.  why a pandemic christmas is the best damn holiday on the planet by reuben salsa.

  • 5. The Importance of Family Traditions by Lisa Cossey
  • 6. What is celebration? by Julian Baggini

5 Writing Prompts For Essays About Celebration

1. why do we celebrate, 2. different ways people celebrate, 3. are celebrations a waste of money, 4. the cultural importance of preserving celebrations, 5. my most memorable celebration.

“Festivals are part of one’s custom, culture and tradition. They are there for us to celebrate. It helps us forget our routine. It gives us some momentary, mental and physical relaxation and thus frees us from die shackles of monotonous work. It is a celebration, entertainment or series of performances of a certain kind, often held periodically.”

Smith writes about why celebrating festivals is so enjoyable, particularly in his native Kuwait. The month is filled with festivities, special events, and prayer. Smith also describes New Year’s Eve in Kuwait: it is celebrated with fireworks, friends, and family as in other countries. Festivals connect us to our traditions and allow us to relax, have fun, and celebrate.

Check out these essays about being grateful .

“This year, Christmas is self-care and a means of survival. This year, I will not allow my mother’s slight to dictate my joy or the absence thereof. This year, she doesn’t win. I will break the chains created by her malfeasance, and I will celebrate this Christmas. I will celebrate the New Year even though, for many of us, it will most likely be as tragic as the one before.”

Ovesen recounts a Christmas experience in which her mother gave gifts to all the children but her, after which she never celebrated Christmas again. For decades, she did not celebrate Christmas; however, this year, she says, she will make up for all the missed celebrations. She does not want her mother’s mistreatment to control her happiness, so she chooses to celebrate life, family, and missed time.

“One family even brought me a gift basket that literally brought tears to my eyes.  Another friend made me a gluten free cake which has now ruined my sons ever making me cake again; hers was too good!!!!  One gift that I always treasure is the phone call I receive each year from my brother; this year was no exception.  Finally, I was also able to hang with one friend in the morning and another friend in the evening.  Life is and was truly good!”

In her short essay, Gal-Or reflects on her birthday that year and what she has realized about life. She lists a few lessons she has learned, including the importance of having a voice, quality time, family, and friends. Her birthday celebration is simple; she only mentions meeting up with two friends, which makes her extremely happy. Gal-Or’s essay is an excellent example of how different people like to celebrate in different ways; some are content with the simplest celebrations.

“I’m thrilled that this year I have no obligation to visit. That finally, I have a legitimate excuse not to plaster on a fake smile, hold my tongue, and pretend that we all get along. This Christmas promises to be one of the merriest ever, knowing it’ll just be me, my wife, and the kids. Simpler times. No extravagance. No kowtowing. No begging and pleading in-laws to stay even though you want them to leave. No emotional regret for ruining yet another Christmas.”

Salsa remembers the Christmas celebrations before the COVID-19 pandemic and all the stress, squabbling, and discomfort that came with them. He recalls the chaos at previous Christmases with his in-laws and is relieved that the times keep them apart. Since the pandemic keeps the extended family from celebrating, he is relieved that their celebration will be relaxed, with just him, his wife, and the kids.

5. The Importance of Family Traditions by Lisa Cossey

“No matter what your family tradition is or what your family chooses to create, just having something for all family members to look forward to each year is important. Traditions help create warm, positive memories that can be recalled fondly and draw family members back to one another year after year.”

Cossey’s essay simply describes how her family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, they have several traditions, including camping trips, baking pies, and video calling other family members. These traditions strengthen familial bonds and create memories to cherish. Cossey also gives examples of other family traditions,  including movie nights, reading books, talent shows, and cooking.

6. What is celebration? by Julian Baggini

“Perhaps on reflection, the best thing to do would be to curl up with a good book. The case is, as ever, inconclusive. But in a world where dogmatism is increasingly the greatest threat, perhaps the tentative nature of philosophical discourse is precisely what we should be celebrating, quietly.”

This essay about celebrating World Philosophy Day opens with a philosophical question. How exactly should such an eccentric occasion be celebrated? Baggini proposes having a philosophical discussion in a cafe, as many great philosophers once did, and a Greek-style party with philosophical exchanges. However, in typical philosophy fashion, the answer is inconclusive. Baggini suggests instead celebrating the “tentative nature of philosophical discourse.”

We all know the types of occasions that people celebrate, but why do people continue to celebrate? In your essay, look into the different reasons people celebrate, whether superstitious, cultural, sentimental, or entirely different. Don’t just give examples of occasions to celebrate; explain why people celebrate them.

Essays about celebration

Think of an occasion such as a birthday, holiday, or religious festival and write about how people typically celebrate it- What do they eat? Who do they celebrate with? What are other traditions connected to it? You may include information from the internet, but your essay can be based entirely on your opinions and experiences.

Some say that celebrating is a waste of money, particularly for occasions like Christmas, as it takes away the holiday’s true meaning. People spend so much on a celebration just to have a “superficial” understanding of the occasion. For an engaging argumentative essay, write about whether you think these sorts of celebrations are wasteful. Be sure to include perspectives from both sides of the argument, and have a strong rebuttal to the opposing viewpoint

Celebrations reflect one’s culture and heritage, familial, regional, religious, or national. Are festivities and celebrations essential to keeping a culture alive, or are there other ways to do this? You do not need to have a solid “yes” or “no” argument in your essay; it can be more nuanced as long as it is explained well.

An easy way to write an engaging essay is by reflecting on a celebration you found particularly memorable. Write about the celebration in detail- Who was there? When was it? How did you celebrate? How has it impacted you today? From a childhood Christmas to a loved one’s funeral, this essay has many possibilities.

Sample Answer 1

For me, the New Year has always been special. I have several recollections of New Year’s Eve celebrations, but one that stands out is when I was traveling from Mumbai to Pune. After graduating from college that year, I was offered a job in Mumbai. And I didn’t have a lot of time off. As a result, I planned to travel on the day before New Year’s Eve so that I could celebrate the New Year with my loved ones.

After being gone from them for around seven to eight months, I was eager to meet everyone. So, after finishing my work, I decided to gather my belongings and left the workplace. My train was supposed to arrive at 10 p.m. However, I was informed that my trip had been postponed due to technical difficulties and would now take place the next day. I was grieved to learn about it, but I chose to travel anyhow.

Since it was 31st December, few individuals were on board that day. I knew I would be ushering in the New Year on the Mumbai platform since the train left at ten o’clock. I was depressed, but I was determined to spend the first day of the New Year with my family and friends.

Unexpectedly, I run into an old friend on the train. He, too, went through the same ordeal. As a result, we talked for hours, recalling our times together along the tour. People were yelling joyously and wishing each other as we approached. We joined some people dancing in front of the train station, danced a little, laughed, and watched fireworks. We were euphoric for an hour before heading home. It was a unique yet unforgettable New Year’s Eve event.

Sample Answer 2

A new year is one of the most memorable days of the year. Most of the day’s festivities begin from the late hours of December 31 and continue till the wee hours of January 1. Most people attend New Year parties, make new resolutions, eat good food, etc. People across all walks of life love celebrating New Year. They chew thoughts about the bygone days and welcome what lies ahead. Here, I’d like to talk about my childhood New Year celebrations, which are still vivid. I remember every activity that my little brother and I used to do, such as cutting the cake, singing, dancing, etc. It used to be a grand celebration on the last day of the year. My grandfather always organized a New year’s party in the backyard of our society, where all our friends and family would gather together to celebrate and welcome the New Year with a big bang. The place would be decorated well with lights, and everything from delicious cake to unique wines and high-end sound systems would be set up in the backyard. Everyone would gather before 11 PM at the premises, and they’d enjoy themselves until the clock struck 12. The entire place would be filled with voices of people screaming and hugging each other with happiness. It would be a wonderful sight to watch. Many other people would also make  New Year’s resolutions and dance their hearts out. Somehow, this year, owing to the pandemic, I decided to be a little more low-key, so I stayed home and enjoyed the New year’s celebration with my friends virtually.

Chinese New Year Vs Christmas (Differences and Similarities)

You might not know a lot about Chinese New Year (also known as the Spring Festival), but, really, there aren't too many differences when you compare the biggest Chinese festival of the year to the biggest Western festival.

In this piece, we look at some of the biggest differences and similarities to help you gain a better understanding.

  • Christmas 2024 date: December 25th, 2024
  • Chinese New Year 2024 date: February 10th, 2024

Origins and Beliefs

While Christmas is a religious holiday with connections to Christianity, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Chinese New Year celebration has links to agrarian society when the Chinese used to pray for success during the coming farming year. Later religious practices, like Buddhism and ancestor worship, also attached themselves to the Spring Festival.

In a way, both festivals have similar origins as they both have roots in paganism, taking the earth's position relative to the sun into careful consideration. There's half a season's difference (on average) now. Yule celebrates "the return of the sun"; the Spring Festival celebrates the 'Start of Spring'.

Click to see the Origin and History of Chinese New Year .

Legend (one that came after Chinese New Year came to be) has it that, during Chinese New Year , a monster named Nian (or year) used to go to the villages once a year to eat livestock and children, and that the only way to banish this monster was through red-colored objects and loud noises. This sheds some light on the traditions explained below.

Click to read the Top 3 Chinese New Year Legends/Stories .

Legends of Christmas are rather more friendly, with tales of the historical Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) and the mythical embodiment of Christmas (Father Christmas) merging into one benevolent present-giver.

Dates and Duration

Traditionally Chinese New Year lasts about two weeks in total, with the official holiday between February 10th to 17th in 2024, with most people returning to work by February 17th.

The Western Christmas holiday season is similar in length at approximately two weeks, from December 24 through January 6, although generally only schools get this entire period off. The reason for choosing December 25 as the actual date is unknown, although this was the date the Romans marked as the winter solstice.

One of the main differences in dates for the two celebrations is that in China the dates change every year (within the period January 21 to February 20) in accordance with the lunar calendar , and the first seven days are always public holidays (from CNY's Eve).

See detailed information about Chinese New Year date and why it changes every year .

Traditional Activities

Christmas is generally seen as a Christian holiday (even though the original mid-winter Yule celebration predated Christianity by thousands of years). The typical rite is to attend mass or some form of carol service to remember Christ's birth.

The Chinese New Year is welcomed with lion and dragon dances (among many other things listed below) in a parade through the streets. The lions and dragons are typically acrobats in colorful costumes as depicted. The dances are loud in the aim to push away evil spirits and bring in prosperity and luck for the year ahead.

Another tradition that is common in China, that you don't find as much during the Christmas season, is the buying and wearing of new clothes especially for Chinese New Year, and getting rid of the old. The idea of new beginnings is really important during the Spring Festival.

Read more on How to Celebrated Chinese New Year : a day-by-day guide .

During Christmas in the West, although these traditions vary wildly whether you're in North America or in Europe, and even within Europe, typical food includes turkey, nuts, sweets, and cakes. In general hours are spent around the dining table eating lots and drinking with family and friends.

In China, the foods popular during Chinese New Year are popular because of the symbolic meaning of their name or appearance.

For example, fish is always present during Chinese New Year meals because the Chinese word for fish, yu, has the same sound as the Chinese word for abundance. As a result, Chinese people believe that eating fish during this period means you will be prosperous in the new year.

Another common item is dumplings , or jiaozi , shaped to look like ancient Chinese coins representing wealth and prosperity. These are usually stuffed with meat and vegetables with specific stuffings ranging across the country.

As for meal timings , Christmas sees its main meal at lunchtime of Christmas Day, while in China the main meal takes place in the evening of Chinese New Year's Eve.

See Chinese New Year Food: Top 7 Lucky Foods and Symbolism .

Traditional Presents

In the West , toys are more common presents for children (given to them by Santa Claus). Between adults, presents are more likely to be food or drink related, or money amongst close relatives.

During Chinese New Year , however, the most common present is the red envelope filled with money, or hongbao . These are given to children by adults. Amongst each other, adults will exchange fruit baskets, sweets, alcohol, tea, and other items like that. We've compiled a list of gifts to give at Chinese New Year here .

Colors and Decorations

Green, red, and gold are the most common Christmas colors in the West, adorning the streets, houses, and shop fronts. In China, red and gold are also the most typical colors, representing prosperity and happiness.

You'll also see these colors across houses and streets, with Chinese New Year's decorations made of red paper and thread as seen in the picture on the side. Chinese households will put up couplets with good wishes or statements, paper cuttings, and images in relation to the Chinese zodiac.

Flowers also represent Chinese New Year festivities. While in the West we put up Christmas trees during the Christmas season, in China kumquat trees can be found because the Chinese word for kumquat contains the word for 'gold', representing wealth.

The atmosphere, and the noise levels, definitely differs between Christmas and Chinese New Year.

While firecrackers and fireworks are set off to be as loud as possible in China in order to scare away the above mentioned Nian monster, during Christmas the atmosphere is generally calmer, with church bells and Christmas carols taking a quiet approach to festivities.

Click to see Why Chinese New Year Must Have Firecrackers .

Christmas in the West generally sees no fireworks, although New Year's Eve does. Even then, however, the focus is on aesthetically pleasing fireworks in the West, whereas Chinese New Year fireworks are aiming to be as loud as possible rather than as beautiful as possible.

More Similarities: Kinship, Hope, Commercialism

And finally, a huge similarity lies in the importance of kinship.

In both Chinese and Western cultures, the importance of being with family takes a central role during celebrations, and traveling home is an important part of this.

The only difference here is that going home during Chinese New Year is so important for Chinese people that this time of year is also known to be the biggest human migration . Millions leave the cities on trains, planes, and buses to get to their families in the countryside.

Also, both of these celebrations are a way to make the long, cold winter seem less daunting, providing hope at the end of the tunnel, these days also with a new commercial twist.
