A Student’s Journey on the Bridge to PhD Program
Columbia’s bridge to phd program supports eden shaveet in her journey as a public health infodemiologist..
Eden Shaveet
Eden Shaveet is about to ”graduate” as a public health infodemiologist from Columbia Engineering’s Bridge to PhD Program, designed to support students who’ve encountered barriers on their path to a graduate education in STEM. Shaveet, who holds an MS in health informatics and analytics from the Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), is the first Bridge Scholar taken on by the Department of Computer Science.
Interest in infodemiology
While at Tufts, she maintained one of the highest GPAs in the TUSM program and won their 2023 Health Informatics and Analytics Academic Achievement award. A faculty member there mentioned “infodemiology” to Shaveet in passing and she was instantly intrigued. While she was already interested in epidemiology and information science, she’d never considered that the two fields could overlap.
Shaveet’s path to graduate school has been far from traditional. She completed secondary school through the Gateway to College program and received her BA with honors in psychology and behavioral health. During clinical internships as an undergraduate, Shaveet found herself gravitating more towards databases and decided to pursue informatics.
Coming to Columbia
Shaveet came to the Bridge to PhD Program in STEM to hone in on her computational skill set. She was already trained as a health informatician, but she recognized that pursuing computer science research and coursework as a bridge scholar would not only enhance her skills as an interdisciplinary informatician but also increase her competitiveness as an applicant for PhD programs in informatics and information science. She knew that the Bridge program catered to people like her -- those who came from nontraditional educational backgrounds or have been historically underrepresented in their fields. Being offered a spot in the program has been one of the most fulfilling training experiences of her life.
“The Bridge to PhD Program is an exceptional program led by exceptional people that cultivates capable and successful academics,” Shaveet said. “I'm lucky to be a part of it.”
Shaveet didn’t arrive at Columbia Engineering with a comprehensive background in computing -- she saw herself as a potential public health practitioner. But during her first hackathon, her team won the first-place Patient Safety award through the Patient Safety Technology Challenge, alongside this reporter’s team, at the 2023 DivHacks Hackathon —an unexpected feat, she admitted. After taking courses in computer science and conducting computational research, Shaveet feels like this is where she is meant to be: “It’s what has kept my attention.”
Using data to explore food-poisoning outbreaks
And now her specialty at Columbia has become just that: public health infodemiology. Her work is focused on using publicly available data from sources such as social media and discussion forums to explore outbreaks of food-borne illnesses. She appreciates that “at Columbia, it’s not just hobbyists” who are interested in this work, but researchers who are integrating it into public health departments, including the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Shaveet is working with Computer Science Professors Luis Gravano and Daniel Hsu on the Adaptive Information Extraction from Social Media for Actionable Inferences in Public Health team. She describes the research as “grounded in the idea that we can augment current methods in public health needs assessments and passive syndromic surveillance using…anywhere people congregate and self-disclose information that we can translate into a health status signal for a population.”
Next up? A PhD
Shaveet applied to a range of PhD programs while finishing up her studies, received several offers, and has recently accepted a place in Cornell’s PhD program in information science with a graduate minor in computer science. She’s not going far -- she’ll be based on the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island.
Shaveet credits the Bridge program for preparing her in ways that she didn’t expect and that she is very grateful for. “I really didn’t expect to be applying to PhD programs in computer science and informatics!” she said. A major confidence builder has been winning the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering Graduate (CSGrad4US) Fellowship, which will fund three years of her PhD anywhere she decides to go.
Richard Hagen, the director of the Bridge to PhD Program, praised Shaveet’s stellar performance in the program: “Eden truly embodies the essence of the Bridge to PhD program at Columbia with her outstanding accomplishments and the prestigious grant she received. I am incredibly proud of her and excited to witness her continued success in higher academia.”
The Bridge to PhD at Columbia
Columbia Engineering’s Bridge to PhD Program features intensive research, academic, and mentoring experiences for post-baccalaureates seeking to strengthen their applications for graduate school and to prepare for the transition to a PhD student. Recent alumni have gone on to PhD programs at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University. Several recent alumni have also received prestigious awards from the NSF, including the Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

PhD in Nutritional and Metabolic Biology
The Nutritional and Metabolic Biology (NMB) PhD training program prepares students to work at the frontiers of biomedical research in nutritional and metabolic sciences, exploring the role of nutrition in maintaining optimal human health. The objective of the training program is to prepare individuals who will conduct original basic science research, teach in medical schools and universities, and hold positions of leadership in community and international nutrition.
Housed within the Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN) at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), this inter-disciplinary and multi-departmental training program is highly structured and comprises both coursework and basic research. The NMB program is one of the few pre-doctoral training programs in nutrition in the United States that is located within a medical school and is unique among the other PhD programs at CUMC with an equal number of MDs and PhDs as faculty mentors (including ten MD/PhDs). The location of the NMB training program in a medical school offers trainees a wide array of research opportunities in laboratories headed by established senior scientists as well as NIH-funded younger independent investigators, all focused on the role of nutrition and metabolism in health and disease.

An Opportunity to Take a Deep Dive Into the Field of Technology Management On Columbia’s Campus
- Technology Management
By Abhijit Rajkumar Patharkar, candidate for an M.S. in Technology Management
Every semester, the Columbia University School of Professional Studies M.S. in Technology Management program hosts a four-day residency on Columbia’s New York City Morningside campus that gives students in the executive cohort the opportunity to come together, further relationships developed in the program, and take a deep dive into the field of technology management. For the Executive M.S. students who choose to take courses online, this residency offers opportunities for in-person interaction with faculty, insightful sessions and panels featuring industry leaders, and collaborative activities such as group discussions and debates that enrich the overall learning experience.
“Our residencies are a cornerstone of our program. It’s all about our community,” said Art Chang, associate program director. “Residencies build the social fabric of our student community and extend it to other important communities. They also help students envision their future selves, as represented by successful alumni and leading professionals who use technology innovation to advance business and society.”
Throughout the last residency, held in January, participants explored a comprehensive array of topics spanning strategic advocacy, leadership through storytelling, cybersecurity, product-market fit, artificial intelligence (AI), and data engineering. The experience ended with a session in which all executive students delivered pitches about their innovative business ideas to a distinguished panel of evaluators, including lecturers Stephano Kim, cofounder of Qonsent; Trace Wax, AI product and engineering trainer; and Dawn Barber, the program’s industry liaison.
The diverse curriculum provided a holistic perspective, equipping the participants with a multifaceted skill set essential for navigating the complexities of technology management. Each of the four days focused on one theme related to the ever-evolving field.
Day 1: Shaping Digital Leaders
Conrad Fernandes, a program lecturer who teaches Accounting & Finance, provided a refresher on course concepts. He urged students to delve into daily business news amidst the advancing tech landscape for a holistic understanding of the field. Art Chang talked about digital strategy and leadership, emphasizing the power of storytelling in leadership. He also explored the lean startup principles and stressed the importance of empathy. Alexis Wichowski, program director, challenged students with a simulated scenario, prompting 60-second elevator pitches evaluated by the faculty members.
Day 2: Crafting Product Molecules
Janice Fraser, lecturer in the program, led the Executive Seminar 2, guiding students through "the product molecule." Hands-on work involved perfecting pitches on product market fit and a group critical thinking activity. Lecturer Amy Radin delved into strategic advocacy and navigating critical concepts, while Art Chang offered a tech introduction on infra origins, monoliths, distributed systems, N-tier architectures, and Open-Source.
Day 3: Unveiling Legacies and AI Insights
Lecturer Lauren Goodwin, Ph.D., explored the question "What's your legacy?" prompting students to share their aspirations. “AI does not replace our creativity,” said Goodwin. “It empowers it.” Focusing on machine learning (ML) and AI, she shared practical applications, including AI in construction, and talked about data engineering and cloud concepts, along with hosting a session on how to effectively choose a cloud ML platform.
Day 4: Business Ideas Take Center Stage
The final day featured students presenting their pitches to a panel. The presentations on topics including finance, security, data engineering, marketing, and AI illustrated the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within the Spring 2024 Executive Residency.
“In the swiftly evolving business landscape of the 21st century, visionary technology leadership stands at the forefront of innovation,” said student Michael Nicholas Colella. “Our residencies are a chance to unite some of the world’s most forward-thinking technology leaders and practitioners in the same room to ideate on how to turn challenges into triumph and help businesses thrive responsibly.”
About the Program
Columbia University's Master of Science in Technology Management is designed to respond to the urgent need for strategic perspectives, critical thinking, and exceptional communication skills at all levels of the workplace and across all types of organizations.

Financial Coaching Pays Off. This Columbia University/Equitable Program Shows How.
Terrence Maltbia, professor of organization and leadership at Columbia University’s Teachers College, was looking for a quantifiable way to show that professional coaching can improve business performance. Most professional coaching is done with employees at companies where there aren’t actual dollar figures to track, he explains.
Terrence Maltbia, associate professor of practice, department organization, and leadership at Teachers College of Columbia University
A partnership with Equitable advisors gave him the numbers he needed, he says.
In the past three years, Maltbia and his colleagues at Columbia have trained 300 Equitable advisors in financial coaching—essentially methods for getting clients to follow through on recommendations, which any advisor can tell you is half the battle. The course takes about 40 hours of study. Advisors earn the Columbia University Holistic Financial Coach credential.
“I’m very excited, since with this cohort, we’ve had the opportunity to show correlation and impact in a way that you can’t with other groups,” Maltbia says.
Sarah Vita, chief talent officer, Equitable Advisors
As of the end of 2023, advisors with the coaching credential had, on average, 22% higher assets under management than their peers, according to data provided by Equitable. Advisors who completed the program also received a higher net promoter score, a measure of client satisfaction that looks at whether a customer would recommend a product or service. They also did better than peers in all client survey categories, including “likelihood to recommend,” “takes the time to understand my situation,” and “helps me track my progress against goals,” according to Equitable.
“When clients place more trust in their advisor, often that shows up in three ways: more clients overall, greater assets under management, and improved client satisfaction surveys,” says Sarah Vita, chief talent officer at Equitable Advisors. “For advisor graduates, we’re seeing a lift in all three.”

Vita brought the program to Equitable after she completed a one-year coaching program with Maltbia and realized the potential to develop a program for advisors that could improve outcomes with clients. Equitable covers the majority of the program’s cost, and the participants pay a small fee, which the company says gives them some skin in the game. The program won an award in 2022 for “Best Certification Program” from Brandon Hall Group, an employee development research and consulting firm.
“I thought the use of psychometrics could redefine the industry and the role of financial advisor,” Vita says. Psychometrics is a field in psychology that administers tests to measure an individual’s aptitude and skills in a particular area. Each Equitable participant takes a psychological assessment called the Neethling Brain Instrument, which reveals individual preferences for considering a topic or tackling a challenge. The results can help advisors both understand their own preferences and understand their clients better—including how they may think about approaching a challenge, Vita says.
“Financial advice isn’t just math,” she says. Advisors need to have “the superpower of empathy.”
Jody D’Agostini, an Equitable financial advisor in Morristown, N.J., with about $300 million in assets under management, says the program has improved her practice. She says her focus is on holistic financial planning and that she needs to know as much about clients as possible to understand their behavior.
“It put some more tools in my toolbox,” she says, which allows her to connect more deeply with clients. Those tools include asking better questions and not being afraid of silences. “I became more intentional about listening. I learned dead space is OK. Pause, and see if they will fill that space. Something might come out that they are hesitant to talk about.”
For example, she recalls a client going through a divorce who was afraid to spend money and wasn’t moving forward in implementing her new financial plan as a single woman. “She told me one day, ‘I don’t think you know this, Jody, but I grew up poor,’” says D’Agostini. “That explained everything.”
The coaching advice is specific. For example, at a recent refresher course at Columbia for graduates, one Equitable advisor shared that a client with an adult child with substance abuse problems was failing to implement an estate-planning recommendation to establish a trust that could protect the inherited assets.
Meghaan Lurtz, a lecturer with the coaching program and professor of financial planning at Kansas State University and University of Maryland, suggested she try motivational interviewing—essentially asking a client to name the pros and cons of moving forward with a plan. “They probably know the right answers,” she says. “Getting them to say it can be quite powerful in getting them to move themselves forward.”
Another technique Lurtz recommended is reflection and amplification. There, advisors ask clients questions and repeat the client’s words back to them, perhaps starting with “So what you’re telling me is…”
“You learn so much, and they feel so heard,” Lurtz says. “So when you give advice, they are going to listen.”
